INTRODUCTION The extension project of the East Line Subway of Atlanta's subway network includes the construction of two single track transit tunnels under Interstate Highway 285. The project will be in DeKalb County, Georgia. The length, width, and height of each tunnel are 54.25, 6.3, and 7.2 m (178, 21, and 23 ft) respectively. The ground cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 1.5 to 3.25 m (5 to 11 ft). A soil pillar about 5.5 m (18 ft) wide will remain between the tunnels. The construction of each tunnel includes (i) installation of 21 steel soil support pipes of 75 cm (30 in) diameter, (ii) jet grouting 15 soil cement shafts of 60 cm (24 in) diameter in the soil under the pipes, (iii) contact grouting behind the tunnel lining and between soil support pipes and pavement, (iv) excavation of soil inside the soil support arch, and (v) installation of steel pile foundation, steel sets, and permanent tunnel lining of cast-in-place concrete, all as shown on the cross section in Fig. 1. The soil profile can be described from top to bottom as cement/asphalt concrete pavement, a fill layer consisting mostly of stiff sandy silt/firm silty sand, a residual soil layer consisting mostly of silty sand/sandy silt, partially weathered rock, and solid rock.

A large magnesite-talc body is locared in Delora Township, 11 km sourh-southeasr of Timmins, Onrario. The deposit occurs in part of an Archean greensrone belt dominated by volcanic and sedimenrary rocks and large bodies of ultramafic intrusions. The magnesite-talc zane is abour 1800 m long, has a maximum width of 300 m and has been drilled ro 120 m below surface. Chemical analyses of rhe main carbonate zane average 20 ro 28% soluble MgO (magnesia), 5 ro 6% rota/ iron oxide and less rhan 0.1 % CaO (lime). Mineralogically, the zane consists of approximately 54% magnesite, 28% rate, /5% quartz and 3% hematire. Perrographic srudies suggest that rhe various assemblages of magnesite, rate, quartz and serpentine were derived from a parenr serpenrinire (after dunire). An early carbonitization stage, which produced a high-magnesite, low-talc assemblage, preceded a farer decarbonitizarion stage, which formed rhe main magnesite-talc assemblage. Despite a favourably low calcium oxide content of rhe magnesite-talc rock, considerable iron in the magnesire /at rice has limited the quality of the beneficiared product: rhe besr flotation concentrate to dare yields 92 to 94% dead-burned MgO. ?ORE? is defined as ?mineral/s that can be mined at a profit?. So, what is ORE at 2,000 m water depth? Is it 5% Copper or 1.8% Nickel/Cobalt? One of the key factors that determine what is ORE, profitable or not, is the cost of mining and extraction. Therefore a determination of ORE requires a commercial and technical appreciation of both sea bed mining equipment and mining options. Perry Slingsby Systems (PSS) have built more remotely operated submarine work vehicles, including 900HP trenching machines, than any other company. With Nautilus Minerals, PSS have been studying a range of deep ocean mining solutions. This paper discusses the commercial and technical issues of various extraction techniques applicable to deep ocean mining from 1,500 m to 5,000 m water depth. Issues such as the rate of extraction, (i.e. tons per hour) is a key economic component and is often constrained by the design and horsepower of the miner. Likewise the design itself of the mining machine and cutting heads can determine the size of material produced which impacts on methods of lifting the ore to surface. Issues such as overburden, sea floor conditions, style of mineralization and physical properties of the ore, obviously affect the selection of appropriate mining machine configuration.

With the rapid development of the Chinese steel industry, the strong demand for iron ores has led to huge imports of various iron ores from all over the world. As a relatively new force in the iron ore world and an important raw material supplier, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has achieved an annualised production rate of 100 Mt of iron ore fines. Typical blends were designed to simulate sinter blends employed in Chinese steel mills, and to determine sintering properties and metallurgical performance of blends comprising FMG Rocket fines in pilot sinter pot. It is shown that the sinter of typical blends comprising 15 - 20 per cent rocket fines possesses excellent sintering properties and metallurgical performance. With Rocket fines substitution for competitor ores in a typical customer mill blend comprising fully imported fines, the sinter productivity and tumble index increased from 1.45 t/m2h and 62.0 per cent to 1.54 t/m2h and 64.0 per cent, respectively, while attaining similar reducibility index and reduction degradation index at lower solid fuel consumption.CITATION:Zhu, D, Guo, Z, Ooi, T C, Chun, T, Pan, J and Young, J M, 2013. Representative samples of a composite mixture of three typical Cu/Zn complex sulphide ores, namely Black-, Yellow- and Altered-ore, from the Cayeli deposit in Turkey, were used for leaching tests in 2.2 M FeCl3, or 1 M CuC12-2 M NaCl solution in the temperature range from 313 K to 363 K (40O to 90O C), with and without the presence of an organic solvent for elemental sulphur, such as CCl4. The leaching rates of copper and zinc were quite high, as expected, in FeCl3 solution and complete recovery of both metals was obtained at the highest temperature when the solvent was present. However in CuC1, solution, extraction yields of the order of 95% only for Cu and Zn were achieved and the positive effect of the solvent was not clearly shown. The kinetics curves of Cu leaching by FeCl3 indicated a model of reaction rate depending on the particle surface, as in a chemically controlled reaction, in tests with the presence of CCl4. Without the solvent, or in CuCl2 media, the model of the diffusion controlled reaction seemed to prevail. Values of apparent activation energy, in both of the leaching processes, were determined and compared with those reported in literature.

The economical analyses of different Chuquicamata open pit mine planning scenarios, indicate that the pit closure should occur at latest in the year of 2017. However, about 60,000 m of drill holes have demonstrated that below the pit bottom there is a potential of 2.3 billion tons of ore. Hence, Division Codelco Norte developed the scoping engineering for a large underground panel caving operation, similar to El Teniente mine. This project considers the exploitation of a 2500 m 300 m footprint, with three 250 m lifts. The plan considers to initiate the construction in the year 2009, to begin the production in the year 2015 and achieve a production rate of 45 million tons per year in the year 2021. A large-scale transition from open pit to underground mining like this one presents three main challenges: (1) to include the geotechnical aspects relevant for mine design and mine planning, (2) to define the proper surface and underground infrastructure, and (3) to fulfil the project deadlines and to achieve the production targets. This paper summarizes this transition project and discusses these three main challenges.

"A gold has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution and several leaching conditions have been studied. The leached solution has been recovered by solvent extraction and the optimum conditions have been investigated.SUMMARYIn this investigation, a sponge gold sample (99.92% pure) has been leached with ammonium thiosulfate solution. The effects of CuSO4, (NH4)2S2O3, (NH4)2SO4, NH4OH and retention time on the gold leaching % (extraction %) and thiosulfate oxidation % (consumption %) have been studied. The copper ion acts as a catalyst in gold dissolution. On the other hand, it also accelerates oxidation of thiosulfate (consumption). It was found in this study that the best gold extraction condition was obtained at 43.2 ks with 0.8 – 1.0x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2S2O3, 30 mol/m3 CuSO4, 2.0 – 3.0x103 mol/m3 NH4OH, 0.4 – 0.5x103 mol/m3 (NH4)2SO4, pH 10±0.2 and 150 rpm. The thiosulfate oxidation was about 15% of the initial concentration."

Flotation columns continue to offer improved metallurgical and economic advantages over other flotation methods. Pilot testing at Ozark-Mahoning Co. in Rosiclare, IL led to installation of one 2.3-m-diam (7.5-ft-diam) column for zinc roughing and one 1.1-m-diam (3.5-ft-diam) column for zinc cleaning. This circuit replaced one stage of mechanical roughing-scavenging followed by two stages of cleaner flotation. General Column flotation continues to make inroads into applications traditionally dominated by mechanical flotation cells. For example, columns are becoming more visible as rougher flotation devices. At Royal Mountain King Mine in California, two 2.9-m-diam (9.5-ftdiam) columns are used for rougher flotation of carbon from a gold ore (Orlich et al., 1992). In addition, work performed at BRGM in France demonstrated the superiority of column flotation over mechanical flotation with respect to design of new plants (Morizot et al., 1991). The primary reasons for this acceptance of columns are a general improvement in design, scale-up and operation, as well as improvements in sparger design and performance. With these advances, the full benefits of column flotation can be realized. The benefits of properly designed, aerated and operated flotation columns include lower capital costs, reduced operating costs, fewer processing stages and improved metallurgical performance.

Although unproven, it is suspected that there have been eleven locations since 1988 where explosive generated carbon monoxide (CO) gas moved through the earth and accumulated in nearby underground enclosed spaces. This paper summarizes the incidents, which involved about 30 suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and 1 fatality. Ten incidents occurred in residences and one occurred in a manhole. Although practically nothing is known about the mechanism behind the suspected gas migration, review of the incidents and available information indicates there are certain warning signs and a successful remediation technique available. In each case, overburden heavily confined the explosive in the blasts, preventing release of explosive-generated gases to the atmosphere. All the blasts were in residential areas, and none were excavated immediately. Where the distance from the blast was recorded, 5 of the blasts were within 20 to 50 feet (ft) (6 to 15 meters [m]) of the underground enclosed spaces, 3 were 100 to 150 ft (30 to 46 m) away, and 1 was 400 to 500 ft (120 to 150 m) away. Investigators often identified suspected pathways from the blast site into the underground enclosed spaces. One technique appeared successful at quickly correcting an existing condition. This technique involved applying negative pressure to the earth and removing the CO from the ground surrounding the underground enclosed space.

The codeposition behavior of impurities such as Ag, Bi, Fe, Ni, Pb and Sb with Cu was investigated galvanostatically at 5-3000 A/m2 using a Pt cathode at 60 °C in acidic copper (I) chloride (cuprous chloride) solution at pH1-2 containing 1.0 mol/L of Cu+ and 4.9 mol/L of Cl-. The impurities were classified into two groups: Group I (Ag, Bi) which codeposits with Cu as a metal, and Group II (Fe, Ni, Pb, Sb) which is slightly involved in the deposited Cu in nonmetal form from the electrolyte. Silver and Bi in Group I behaved as more noble metals than Cu, and significantly codeposited with Cu, showing typical features of regular-type codeposition. When Cu was deposited dendritically, the Ag and Bi content in the deposit increased with increased duration of electrolysis as a result of decreased net current density caused by increased cathode area. The current efficiency for Cu deposition in impurity-free solution was 95-100% over 100-1000 A/m2, but it abruptly decreased at above 1000 A/m2 when the limiting current density of Cu was attained. Although Fe, Ni, Pb and Sb in Group II were involved to 0.01-0.02 mass% in the deposit, they had no influence on the current efficiency or morphology of Cu.

"Noranda has successfully developed and implemented two leading-edge mineral exploration technologies — hyperspectral remote sensing and 3-D seismic surveying. Airborne hyperspectral imaging provides detailed geological and mineralogical mapping capability at both a regional and project scale that facilitates improved selection of prospective terrain and an accelerated exploration cycle. Noranda, in partnership with Falconbridge, has licensed the exclusive use of the Earth Search Sciences Inc. (ESSI) Probe-1 hyperspectral scanners (128- channel, 0.43 µm to 2.5 µm spectral range) that are capable of mapping in excess of 3500 km2 per day at 10 m pixel resolution. The technology has been successfully deployed on four continents over a broad range of terrain from desert to boreal forest and the high Arctic.To augment the company’s deep search initiatives, Noranda has successfully modified and implemented existing 3-D seismic technology to help targeting massive sulphides located at depths ranging from 500 m to 2000 m. In the fall of 1998 and early 1999, Noranda completed an 18 km2, 3-D seismic program in eastern Canada by successfully drill testing acoustic impedance anomalies locating massive sulphides at depths in excess of 1100 m."

The effectiveness of selective flocculation and dispersion processes for the concentration of hematite ore are strongly dependent on the ionic content of the process water. It has been noticed that magnesium ions are more detrimental to iron recoveries during gravity separation and flotation processes than calcium. This phenomenon was studied by measuring the zeta potential of hematite ore at various concentrations of sodium, magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium at a pH of 11. Results show that zeta potential inverts from negative to positive at concentrations as low as 0.16 mM of magnesium ions in the solution. It takes a significantly higher concentration (1.25 mM) of calcium ions to achieve the same effect. This difference is attributed to the ability of magnesium ions to adsorb to all surface hydroxyl groups, whereas calcium, due to its larger size, can only adsorb to every third hydroxyl group. This hypothesis was confirmed by results similar to those seen with calcium when this test was repeated with strontium and barium ions. The tendency for calcium ions to adsorb to every third surface hydroxyl group causes higher concentrations of calcium to be less detrimental to hematite concentration processes than magnesium.

The excavation for the Sydney Opera House Parking Station comprises a large donut shaped underground cavern with a central sandstone pillar. The maximum effective roof span is about 19 m and the rock cover is between 7 m and 8 m. Permanent support for the roof and the various services tunnels consists of a combination of tensioned anchors, and untensioned dowels, and mesh with shortcrete and fibrecrete as the final lining. Steel sets were installed at main intersections.Fundamental to the design philosophy for excavation of these spans at such shallow rock cover was the use of monitoring to check on the adequacy of the installed support. Prior to excavation, extensometers, inclinometers, piezometers and surface settlement survey stations were installed. Underground survey stations, anchor load cells and shotcrete pressure cells were installed as excavation proceeded. Excavation commenced at the crown using an initial heading and three widening stages. Geological mapping during excavation confirmed borehole expectations, namely sandstone beds 1 to 4 m thick interbedded with thin shale units. Bedding plane contacts varied over short distances from tight partings to thick brecciated seams. Jointing was subvertical and joints tended to be bed-limited.

The Pemali Open Pit Mine is situated in a small island called Bangka in Indonesia. It produces approximately 165,000 m3/year of tin ore with an average grade of 3.67 kg/m' of tin from a primary deposit. The deposit occurs at the rim of a granitoid intrusion within sedimentary beds. The rock formations, all extremely weathered, and the overlying alluvium, are exposed to a rainfall exceeding 3m/year. Serious slope stability problems are experienced at the mine, despite using overall pit slopes of 20¦-29¦, the latter resulting in a stripping ratio of 4:1. This paper outlines a computer based back analysis of a major slope failure involving some 250,000 m' of material which occurred on the west wall of the pit in February, 1984. The findings from the analysis, together with other information, are used to examine the stability of the east wall of the pit, where tension cracks developed later. The results indicate that the large influx of water was the most significant cause of such slope stability problems and a more intensified water management programme would be beneficial.

The purpose of this study was to develop guidelines to enable mine operators to maximize longwall dust reductions, while optimizing the use of ventilating air and shearer water consumption. A recent investigation by Foster-Miller Incorporated, under a Bureau of Mines contract, quantified the effect of increased face airflow and shearer water supply on face dust concentrations. A 70 pct reduction in respirable dust levels was achieved at the shearer operator's position during tail-to-head cutting by an incremental increase in average face air velocity from 83.8 m/min (275 fpm) to 123.4 m/min (405 fpm), while holding shearer water consumption constant. A 60 pct reduction was achieved through an increase in shearer water pressure and flow from 9.1 kg/cm2 (130 psi) at 0.19 m3/min (50 gpm) to 19.7 kg/cm2 (280 psi) at 0.28 m3/min (75 gpm), holding airflow constant. The combined effects of increasing both parameters produced an 85 pct reduction. Optimal usage of ventilating air and shearer water consumption can be achieved by defining a "point of diminishing returns" above which further increases no longer reduce dust concentrations, proportionately .

1. Introduction The new Cleuson-Dixence development project in the Valais region of the Swiss Alps, involves the construction of a new link between the Grande-Dixence dam (still world recordholder with a height of 300 m) and a power house on the banks of the Rhone consisting of approximately 20 km tunnels and shafts, and involving a fall of about 1900 m. This 1200 MW project will replace an existing 900 MW structure built in the 1960s, no longer considered efficient. The new project comprises a head race drift about 15.8 km long, a surge tank, an inclined cascade shaft 4,2 km long, and an underground power station. The work for lots C and D (head race drift from Tortin to Tracouet, surge tank, six adits ans the complete inclined shaft) was awarded to our group (Prader, Locher, SELL, Losinger, Evéquoz, Dénériaz, Imboden and Bouygues). The geological conditions are: Lower part of the shaft (300 m) : sedimentary - sandstone and soft tertiary sandstone. Yield-pillar-based gate-road designs often fail to provide mine operators with adequate ground control. This is because of the unknowing m is employment of "critically" sized pillars. A "critical” pillar is one that is too large to either yield nonviolently or to yield before the roof and floor sustain permanent damage and is too small to support full abutment loads. To demonstrate the critical pillar concept, afield study of a tapering gate road was conducted by the US Bureau of Mines at the Sunnyside Coal Mines, Sunnyside, UT. Extreme pillar stresses and associated coal bumps characterize the response to first panel mining of a 16.8-m (55.1-ft) wide critical design. Significantly lower pillar stresses, early yielding of the pillar and adjacent panel rib, and an absence of coal bumps suggest that a narrower 12.2-m (40-ft) wide design more closely approaches proper yield pillar dimensions. A probe hole in several 10.6-m (34.8-ft) wide pillars revealed low stress levels and substantial pillar and panel rib yielding prior to abutment onset, indicating a properly functioning yield pillar design.

Liebherr Mining Equipment Co., of Newport News, VA and Baxter Springs, KS, introduced the T282, a new two-axle, diesel-electric, AC drive haul truck with a payload capacity of 327-t (360-st). The T282 was unveiled at a press briefing in October 1998 at the company's Baxter Springs research and development1 manufacturing facility. In addition to an increase in pay- load capacity, the truck's AC drive system has been de- signed to allow for easy configuration to a trolley-assist system with minimal additional equipment. The T282 provides fuel savings, reduced maintenance requirements, and reduced downtime and maintenance costs, providing the mine operator with increases in productivity. "By cyclic voltammetry and potentiostat electrodeposition using Potentiostat/Galvanstat, electrochemical behavior on Ag electrode in electrolyte 0.2M NaOH+0.01MPb(NO3)2-0.01M TeO2 -0.01M TlNO3 solution were also carried out at 298K. The processes of electrodeposition of Tl2Te3 and PbTl4Te3, a thermoelectric material, are reported along with analysis of the composition of the obtained deposits. The results showed that two different underlying processes are occurring depending on deposition potential. One process involves the reduction of TeO3 2- and Tl+ to Tl2Te3 in a potential interval of -0.70V < E < - 0.89V (vs. Hg/HgO). A second process at more negative reduction potentials involves reduction of TeO3 2-, Pb2+ and Tl+ to PbTl4Te3 in a potential interval of -1.02V < E < - 1.19V. The crystalline Tl2Te3 and PbTl2Te3 were deposited electrochemically on Ag substrates at -0.84V and -1.10V respectively. Thermoelectric (TE) material can form a temperature gradient across the material to make electric voltage, which is popular in waste heat utilization and recovery industry. Lead telluride, PbTe, is a small band gap semiconductor of 0.32eV at 300K. PbTe can change its n-type semiconductors with Pb-rich to p-type semiconductors with Te-rich[1]. And it is one of the best TE materials used in thermoelectric generators working between 500K and 600K, or even at a higher temperature of 800K.Three facto,rs play a role in the performance of a thermoelectric material: electrical conductivity (s), thermal conductivity(?), and the Seebeck coefficient (S). These can be combined with absolute temperature (T) to give a figure of merit (ZT) for the material, ZT = s2sT/?. By increasing the electrical conductivity and decreasing the thermal conductivity, which can enhance the ZT value, many efforts, such as alloying with other elements and making the materials nano-sized, have been done to improve its properties recently. Hsu et al. reported that the ZT value of Cubic AgPbmSbTe2+m is increased to 2.2 by doping Ag-Sb to PbTe.[2]."
