Extraction of manganese, gold, and silver from a low-grade manganiferous-silver ore was investigated by thiourea leaching followed by standard cyanidation. The levels of reagent concentrations in this investigation were 0.0 -1.0 M thiourea and 0.0 -1.0 M sulfuric acid. Temperature and agitation speed were maintained at Z5 °c and 300 rpm, respectively. The dissolution of gold, and silver was shown to be dependent mainly on sulfuric acid and thiourea concentrations. In general, 50.0 % Ag, 98.0 % Au, and 75 % Mn were recovered from a Mn-Ag ore by thiourea leaching. Overall silver extraction of 98.0 % was obtained by cyanidation after thiourea leaching. Thiourea leaching of sodium bisulfite leach residues was also studied, and the total extraction of gold and silver were 97 % and 40 %, respectively. Finally, a two-stage thiourea leach was also investigated.

After discussing the geology of the Limagne, the surface indications of petroleum, and the recent exploration, the author states that none of the wells were properly located and that oil possibilities of the Limagne have not been adequately tested. NO PETROLEUM, in commercial quantities, is found in France except the small production of the Pechelbronn field (Fig. 1) in Alsace, which produced 75,000 tons in 1923; therefore the test of the petroleum FIG. 1.-KEY MAP. prospects of the Limagne is most interesting. Under the superintendence of M. Termier, chief engineer of the French mines, a well near Crouelle (Fig. 2) was drilled in 1921 to a depth of 856.3 m. (2808 ft.); at different depths favorable showings were encountered. The well, however, was abandoned because of drilling difficulties. A second one is now being drilled near the same place.

"Potassium is one of the three basic plant nutrients along with nitrogen and phosphorus. There is no substitute for potassium compounds in agriculture; they are essential to maintain and expand food production.Potash is extracted from buried ancient evaporites by underground or solution mining. This accounts for most of the potassium produced. Another important source is brine from landlocked water bodies, such as the Dead Sea, Salar de Atacama or Great Salt Lake.About 95% of potash produced worldwide is used in agriculture. The rest is found in several other industrial uses, including glass manufacturing, soaps, plastics and pharmaceuticals.Currently, three producers: IMC, PCS and Agrium operate 8 conventional and two solution mines in Saskatchewan, five of which run froth flotation circuits, two heavy media-flotation, two run forced crystallization and one natural crystallization.Potash in SaskatchewanPotash was discovered in Saskatchewan in the early 1940’s while drilling for oil. The deposits lie diagonally across the southern plains of Saskatchewan sloping southerly from a 1,000m depth at Saskatoon to more than 1,600 m depth at Belle Plaine and up to 3,000 m in depth in North Dakota. The known deposits are massive, accounting for more than 40% of the world’s known reserves."

The historic centre of one of the most beautiful cities in Northern Europe -Amsterdam - is being excavated to accommodate the new North/South metro line. This new line is due for completion in 2012, and will link the Buikslotermeerplein district north of the harbour, underneath the Central Station and the old city with its gables and picturesque canals, to the commercial centre in Amsterdam Zuid/WTC. Three underground stations are being construction in the old city at Rokin, Vijzelgracht and Ceintuurbaan. The logistics of working in the middle of an historic city are demanding -maintaining tram, vehicular traffic and pedestrian access along narrow streets, providing suitable protection for the public alongside the working areas, arranging adequate delivery routes, as well as monitoring the old and mostly historical buildings for potential settlement. Safety of both the public and adjacent properties is paramount. Diaphragm walling - 1.2m & 1.5m thick and up to 48m deep - was chosen as the support system for the three deep metro stations. Challenging engineering as well as state-of-the-art equipment to construct the diaphragm walls was needed in order to meet the tight working specifications, in the narrowest locations imaginable. Extreme conditions call for innovative solutions.

The Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW) Gravity Pipeline (GP) is the first Progressive Design Build (PDB) tunnel completed in North America. As part of the Regional Environmental Sewer Conveyance Upgrade (RESCU) Program, the tunnel is a key component to replacing and rehabilitating components of the existing conveyance system in San Mateo County, California. The GP consists of a large diameter Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar (FRPM) pipe installed inside a 4.1 m (13.5 ft) inside diameter, 5.3 km (3.3 mile) long precast concrete segmentally lined tunnel. The tunnel was constructed using a 4.6 m (15.2 ft) diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) through heterogenous silts, clays and sands. Construction included two separate TBMlaunches from a centrally located access shaft, and a tunnel alignment below but in close proximity to very soft Young Bay Mud. Settlement criteria and mitigation strategies focused on protection of an existing 1.42 m (56 inch) diameter force main and adjoining structures along the alignment. This paper discusses the results of the theoretical settlement analysis versus the actual observed ground movements, while also presenting mitigation measures and adjustments made during tunneling to reduce the risks of adverse settlement.

The tribological and mechanical properties of binderless and metal-bonded niobium carbides (8 or 12 vol.-% of Cobalt, 12 vol.-% of Fe3Al) are presented. Rotating disks made of niobium carbide bearing hard metals were mated against alumina (99.7%) under unlubricated (dry) unidirectional sliding tests (0,1 m/s to 12,0 m/s; 22°C and 400°C) as well as in oscillation tests (f= 20 Hz, ?x= 0,2 mm, 2/50/98% rel. humidity, n= 105/106 cycles). Microstructure and phase compositions were determined as well. The tribological data obtained were benchmarked with different ceramics, cermets, hard metals and thermally sprayed coatings, where NbC bonded with 8% and 12% Co presented above 8 m/s the lowest wear rates so far in such a benchmark. Binderless NbC (HP-NbC1) and the metal bonded NbCs exhibited low wear rates under dry sliding associated with high P?V load carrying capacities. NbC-based hard metal bonded with 12 vol.-% of Fe3Al resulted in a higher hardness level than for 12 vol.-% cobalt. The tribological profile established revealed a strong position of NbC bearing materials under tribological considerations and for closed tribosystems against established reference tribo-couples.

"It is very important to reveal the lime dissolution mechanism in steelmaking slag, to promote its dissolution without calcium fluoride, which is now almost forbidden for use in most industrialized countries. In this research, the purpose was focused on the development of an experimental method to measure the mutual diffusivity of Ca2+ under the condition of lime dissolution into slag. By forming diffusion couples using a ""vacuum slag aspirating technique"", the method was established. The following mutual diffusivities of Ca2+, in CaO-SiO2-FeO slag systems, imitating oxygen steelmaking slag, were determined using this method:4.1*10-10 m2/s at 1400°C for 27wt.%CaO-53wt.%SiO2-20wt.%FeO slag,4.3* 10-10 m2/s and at 1400°C for 20wt.%CaO-40wt.%SiO2-40wt.%FeO slag, and 1.3*10-10 m2/s at 1250°C for 20wt.%CaO-40wt.%SiO2-40wt.%FeO slag.It was also verified that, if the basicity and ferrite content of the bulk slag are low, then a calcium silicate film forms on the lime surface, and drastically deters the lime dissolution."

BHP has recently constructed a Hot Briquetted Iron Plant at Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Supply of iron ore fines to the plant is by conveyor from the companyÆs existing Nelson Point stockyards. The conveyor passes under Port Hedland harbour in a concrete segmentally lined tunnel, approximately 1030 m long and with a 5.1 m external diameter. The tunnel was constructed by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) which both excavated the ground and erected the tunnel lining. The tunnel was bored between cut and cover in situ concrete portal structures, the TBM being launched from the Finucane Island side towards Port Hedland town. The alignment required lengthy gradients of 1:6 on either side of the harbourÆs dredged channel, under which the tunnel is bored with a minimum clearance of 8 m.The tunnel is fitted-out with:1800 mm belt conveyor capable of 10 000 tph;walkway along which a specially designed inspection/ maintenance vehicle can run; andtunnel services including power, light, fire detection and suppression communications, water mains for wash down and sumps and pumps for drainage.This paper gives a general overview of the design and construct contract, important aspects of the design and the construction process itself.

In this U.S. Bureau of Mines study, production trends have been analyzed for 82 gob gas ventholes on 7 longwall panels in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed, Pennsylvania. Cumulative production from individual holes was found to vary considerably, ranging from 0.03 x 106 to 10.1 x 106 m3. Peak production rates were generally about 0.03 x 106 to 0.06 x 106 m3/d, but rates over 0.10 x 1@ m3/d were observed. The variability of gas production from individual holes can be attributed to several factors, including completion practices and problems, the extent of fracture development in the strata above the extracted panel, water production, and location on the panel. Of particular significance is hole location. Holes on the ends of the panels, where overburden strata are in tension because of the support of the surrounding pillars, were generally the highest and longest producers. This observation led to the experimental placement of gob gas ventholes in the zone of tension along the margin of a panel, instead of in the traditional centerline location, which is in compression. Analysis of 7 months of gas production data indicates that the experimental near-margin holes produced 77 pct more gas than did centerline holes on the same panel.

We have developed a new shotcreting which is suitable for the primary support of TBM tun- nelling in soft rock. This spraying compound is made from cement, a special accelerating agent and glass fiber. It can be sprayed on to a rock surface using a specially designed gun similar to paint-spraying equipment. Some of the characteristics of this method are as follows: 1) If spraying is done keeping the distance between the gun and the rock surface be- tween 0.2 and 3.0 m, the rebound losses are small and there is little dust. 2) This method can be used on excavated rock surfaces under inflowing water conditions of up to 10 i/m2òmin. 3) After 1 day the compressive strengthes of the sprayed material is greater than 250 kgf/cm2.

A project to develop the Zinclor electrowinning cell to industrial size is being conducted at Tecnicas Reunidas' Research and Development Centre with Spanish Ministry of Industry support. This project is the final development phase in zinc electrowinning from a chloride medium, the highest ZINCLOR technology development level prior to the industrial scale having already been reached. This paper covers the outcomes and conclusions corresponding to project Phases 1 and 2: Process Selection and Industrial Electrodes (1 m2) design and testing. The most important achievement reached is that there are presently available industrial cathodes and anodes for the Zinclor diaphragm cell giving an optimum response for zinc chloride electrowinning with unit power consumptions between 2.65 and 2.80 kWh/kg Zn, depending on the diaphragm type. Standard electrolysis conditions were: 65 g/L ZnC12, 3 g/L HCl, 160 g/L NaCl, 350 g/t Zn arabig gum as the addition agent, 36¦C, and 400 A/m2 current density. The selection of electrodes, diaphragms and organic additives for the industrial scale tests have been optimised. The complete electrowinning cell development, with electrodes having an active area of I m2, enables the evaluation of Zinclor Technology application for industrial processes.

The Bulli Coal Seam, located in the Illawarra Coalfield of New South Wales, has a long and varied history of sudden outbursts. From available information this problem has resulted in twelve fatalities over the last one hundred and one years, with over five hundred separate outburst incidents being identified. These incidents have varied in severity and intensity from the discharge of 1 to 2 tonne of coal, with a slight increase in gas emission, to the discharge of 200 to 400 tonne of coal with some 6,000 m3 of gas being liberated and large items of mining equipment being pushed 1 to 2 metres down the roadway.Geological features associated with these outbursts can be mapped on a regional and mine by mine basis, to provide some indication or warning. Similarly changes in gas content and gas composition can also be determined on a regional and mine by mine basis. However sudden geological changes (such as a 6.5 metre seam displacement within 15 metres) variations in gas content (such as 6 m3/tonne to 15 m3/tonne) and changes in gas composition (from 95% CH4 to 90% CO2) all within one mine does make the prediction or forecasting of outburst incidents exceedingly difficult.

In order to maximize the extraction of high grade pillars at The Doe Run Company, artificial pillars are created using cemented rock fill (CRF). CRF pillars aid extraction of pillars in two ways. One is to offer back support for the immediate area where pillars are being extracted. The second is to increase the post failure residual strength of pillars surrounded by backfill. The CRF is produced using a combination of minus 1.0 m run of mine (ROM) rock and minus 5 cm crushed rock. Depending on the operation the CRF slurry is either produced in an underground or a surface batch plant. The slurry and rock are transported to the fill area by truck where they are mixed and placed in 1 m lifts. To reduce the amount of CRF needed, fill fences are constructed around the perimeter of the CRF pillar. Within these fences ROM CRF is placed in lifts until within 0.6 m of the back after which minus five centimeter CRF is slung tight to the back utilizing slinger trucks. In constructing these artificial pillars a number of set procedures have been established to ensure that the work is done both properly and safely.

Previous measurements of the thermoelectric power of ionic crystals are reviewed briefly. It is concluded that, while extensive measurerements are available on systems in which the electrode M has a cation in cornon with the sall MX, there is as yet little modern work on systems in which the metal electrode M' does not haue a calion in common with the salt. We haue now measured the thermoelectric power of- single cryslals of KC1 and of KC1 + SrCl2 between plati.nu?n electrodes over a much wider range of temperature than before. individual ionic heats of transport, which, while probably not very accurate, are of a reasonable order of magnitude, are obtained from this data on the basis of an assumption that charge carriers do not cross the electrode/salt interface. RELATIVELY little work has been done on thermal diffusion in ionic crystals. Reinhold and coworkers1-I measured the thermoelectric power and Soret effect in silver and cuprous salts and their mixed crystals. One electrode was kept at constant temperature and electromotive force was measured as a function of the temperature gradient. This is not a satisfactory technique if the results are to be compared with theory; rather should the electromotive force be measured for small temperature differences as a function of the mean temperature of the two electrodes. They used electrodes having the same cation as the salt. Patrick and Lawsons measured the thermoelectric power of AgBr and of AgBr containing 0.25 mole pct CdBr2 using silver electrodes and temperature gradients of 10°C in the temperature range 100° to 400°C. The results were analyzed using the Teltow9 values of the ratio of the mobility of the two types of charge carrier (cation vacancies and interstitials) found from conductance measurements and the wagnerlo estimate of the heterogeneous contribution to the thermopower, Ohet They obtained values of qi = 0.017 ev and q$ = -0.385 ev for the heats of transport of interstitial Ag ions and cation vacancies, respectively. Their data has been reanalyzed by Haga using the corrections to the Wagner formula for ehet given by Howard andLidiard; Haga found ev. Christy et a1.14 have measured the thermopower of AgBr containing 0.01 to 1.0 mole pct CdBr,. They analyzed their results in terms of the theory of Howard and Lidiard and found that excellent agreement with the theory was obtained if q5 + : + hF was set equal to 0.70 ev at 175°C and equal to 0.58 ev at 250°C. Since Teltow's value for hF, the enthalpy of formation of a Frenkel defect pair, is 1.27 ev, this means that qt + q: increases in magnitude from -0.57 ev at 175°C to -0.69 ev at 250°C. This result is in poor agreement with Patrick and Lawson's value of -0.37 ev for pure AgBr (for which the corrections to the Wagner estimate for ehet are very small). christy1' has also reported thermopower measurements for pure silver halides and for the systems he finds that qr + qt for AgBr increases in magnitude from about -0.55 ev at 150°C to about -1.1 ev at 400°C. The temperature dependence of the sum of the heats of transport in AgCl is very similar in magnitude. The sum qi + q cannot be decomposed into the individual interstitial and vacancy heats of transport without a knowledge of the entropy contribution from the change in the lattice vibrational frequencies around the interstitial and vacancy. Despite this it seems an inescapable conclusion from Christy's analysis that and -6 = Q Ag are quite strongly temperature-de pendent and that -q: is much greater in magnitude than the corresponding activation energy for vacancy migration, +0.37 ev. It remains a mystery as to why the data for pure AgBr are fitted so well by the assumption of temperature-independent heats of transport if association of impurity ions and vacancies is neglected.l The values for q$ and q: so obtained are also much more in line with those expected from a simple kinetic interpretation of the heats of transport due to wirtz.17 Christy and Hsueh have also measured the thermopower of CuCl between copper electrodes; 0 for pure CuCl is comparable with that for the silver halides but, owing to the limited solubility of divalent cation impurities it was not found possible to deduce values for the heats of transport. In contrast to these extensive measurements on cells of the type M MX 1 M, there have been relatively few attempts to measure the thermoelectric power of cells of the form M' 1 MX I M'. (We specifically exclude from discussion cells of this type in which the metal electrodes M' are in contact with gas containing a controlled partial pressure of either M or X,, since in these cells the electrochemical reactions are analogous to those of the first type.) The thermoelectric power of Pb12, PbC12, TlC1, TlBr, TlI, NaNO3, and KNO 3 between platinum electrodes was measured by Thie1e.l3 In discussing these measurements Holtan20 asserts that the thermopotential initially fluctuated wildly and even changed sign before approaching a steady value. A high degree of irreproducibility is also evident in the work of Nikitinskaya and Murin21 who first studied the thermopower of NaCl and KC1 between platinum electrodes. Much better reproduci-bility was achieved in our earlier measurements on KC1;22 these were, however, confined to a relatively narrow temperature range and one of the objects of the work reported in this paper was to extend the temperature range of the measurements of the thermoelectric power 8 of KC1. The Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is a scientific facility that will be placed in the deeper reaches of the Homestake mine, Lead, SD. Our team of geologists and engineers is carrying out the first scientific project awarded to the site ? Towards a Transparent Earth. Taking advantage of the thousands of open exploratory and sand-line holes, we are installing the beginnings of a seismic observatory. Each installed station consists of a 3-D accelerometer package and a 1 nanoradian 2-D tilt meter. In order to allow for a variety of monitoring and characterization studies, the array instruments are sensitive over the frequency bandwidth of 0.2 - 1 KHz. Three, three component accelerometer stations are currently installed ? in a 140 m deep bore beneath the slurry pump house, and in 12 m deep bores on the 2000-foot level, 800 and 400 m from the Ross shaft. There is a tilt-meter installed at each 2000 level station. These installations are in 150 mm diameter sand-holes. From the currently installed tilt sensors we are investigating solid earth deformation as a response to tidal potential. The accelerometers are being used to locate and characterize events associated with mine dewatering and rehabilitation.

The existing Rome-Florence railroad capacity is inadequate for the traffic volume. To increase this capacity and to reduce the traveling time the Italian National Railroad Administration has decided to provide an additional 400% of rail capacity. This new rail line will be known as the Direttissima Roma-Florence line. It is planned to operate the trains on this connection at speeds of 250 km per hr. Table 1 lists the main design characteristics. [TABLE 1. Construction works for this new line have been divided by the railroad administration into eight sections. Five of these have already been committed to joint ventures. Castiglione Tunnel is a part of the fifth section, 42 km in length, which has been awarded to Consorzio Ferrofir which is a joint venture composed of the construction firms of Astaldi - Di Penta - Lodigiani - Sogene.

The Grossschloppen vein-uranium deposit, Bavaria, West Germany, was examined utilizing underground workings during 1980-82 by Esso Erz GMbH, an affiliate of Exxon Minerals Company (EMC). Geologic evaluation entailed dense drilling of a portion of the deposit from workings constructed specifically for the program. Discovered in 1977, the deposit was initially explored by surface diamond drillholes which allowed definition of a 30-60 m wide vein system discontinuously mineralized along a 1000 m strike length and to at least a 450 m depth. The underground program was conceived as a cost effective procedure to answer questions on vein correlation, grade continuity and variability. A 1200 m decline allowed access for detailed sampling of approximately 10% of the known area of mineralization. Fanned drillholes, logged by gaga probe, were spaced to provide intersections of veins at 10 to 20 m intervals. Six cross cuts also penetrate the pitchblende and uranophane mineralization which occurs in 0.1 to 2.5 as thick quartz veins. Detailed cross-sections and level plans were constructed for resource estimates of the intensively studied portion of the vein system. The program resulted in the discovery of local, high grade areas and an average grade in the evaluated area nearly double that expected from surface drilling.

"Amok Ltd./Cluff Mining operates a uranium mine at Cluff Lake in northern Saskatchewan. The project consists of one open pit and one underground mining operation along with a full-scale milling installation.The underground stoping operations are of the narrow vein type and are done between two levels 50 m apart. The mining method is undercut with concrete backfilling. Cuts are 3.5 m in height and can be as narrow as 1.4 m in width.Stoping operations are mechanized utilizing a CT-500E electric Microscoop marketed in Canada by Teledyne. The machine is only 85 cm in width and does all the mucking in stopes. Ore passes are provided in stope roughly every 40 m to 50 m.This paper describes the utilization of the CT-500E Microscoop in the company's underground operations and provides performance data related to the experience.IntroductionThe Amok Ltd ./Cluff Mining operation is located in the northwestern corner of Saskatchewan. The project started in 1980 with open pit mining and milling operations. In 1983, an underground mining operation began production . Today, the Amok Ltd./Cluff Mining installation produces 800 tonnes of uranium per year , which originates from both the open pit and the underground mine at about the same proportion."

Catalysts Mo-Ni-S were prepared by combining MoS2 and NiS in weight ratios 1:1, 1:2, 1:4 and 2:1, each of which was admixed with 5%wt Ag and 5%wt YSZ to increase three-phase boundary surface area of the electrode. For comparison catalysts comprising Co-Mo-S in weight ratio of 1:1 of CoS to MoS2 admixed with 5%wt Ag and YSZ and pre-sulfided NiMoO4 were made. The catalysts were examined for electrochemical oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) at 850°C temperature. The catalyst prepared from 1:1 (wt. %) NiS:MoS2 demonstrated highest performance. Current density up to 1,330 mA/cm2 and power density up to 300 mW/cm2 were achieved using pure H25 gas, which are the highest among the reported H2S-powered fuel cells ever published in the literature. Anode materials of different NiS:MoS2 ratios have been characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), simultaneous TG/DSC analysis and Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA). TG/DSC and NAA results show that addition of NiS and Ag increases fuel cell performance due to improved structure/integrity of the anode. It has also been demonstrated that MoS2 is a suitable anode material in H2S-powered SOFC, with high activity towards H25 oxidation and thermally and chemically stable up to 850°C.
