The Blue Mountain Tunnel is a part of the Sultan River Hydroelectric Project. The Sultan Project is in the Cascade Mountain Range, approximately 56 km (35 mi) northeast of Seattle, Washington. The geology is structurally complex, consisting of graywacke and argillite, with lesser amounts of metaigneous rocks. The tunnel, excavated with a tunnel boring machine (TBM), is 4.32 m (14 it) in diameter and 6.3 km (3.9 mi) long. The average 24 hour advance was 41 m (134 it) with a maximum of 71 m (234 it). The tunnel is essentially unlined except for 383 m (1,257 it) in a low cover area and in the rocktrap. Inspection of the tunnel after one year of operation showed it to be in good condition with only a minor amount of rock debris in the rocktrap.

The paper presents the foundation design and construction of a landmark urban redevelopment scheme in central London, UK. The scheme comprises the new Tottenham Court Road Underground station, Crossrail interchange box and associated over-site commercial development. The paper focuses on the design, procurement and construction of large diameter bored piles, up to 68m in depth, which form the foundation support system for the over-site commercial development at Denmark Place. The congestion below ground required an intricate foundation design solution which has been a catalyst for developing innovative load transfer arrangements and has resulted in the advancement of pile construction technology in the UK. The foundation system was also designed to cater for the construction of two significant elements of proposed below ground infrastructure. Selected large diameter piles have been constructed within 1.1m of live underground railway tunnels. An innovative D-shaped pile was constructed in a zone subject to particular spatial constraints. The proposed Crossrail tunnels will be bored within 1m of selected over-site development piles. In addition, a 30m deep excavation forming a new escalator box will be constructed in direct contact with the over-site development piles. The stakeholder engagement process is described together with the foundation design development and buildability assessment. The benefits from early collaboration between the designers and specialist contractors are highlighted. From an analytical design perspective, the entire foundation construction sequence was modelled in detail in order to assess the soil structure interaction and any potential adverse effects on existing elements of underground infrastructure. The results from the three dimensional numerical modelling simulation are compared with field monitoring data.

The first version of the longwall strata control and maintenance system (LSCMS) has been successfully developed by the Strata Control Re¬search Team at the University of Alabama. The system includes a software package designed to monitor shield leg pressure, interpret the data and predict the forthcoming roof loads and the existence of geological anomalies. It can also detect maintenance problems of the face equipment. The LSCMS was installed underground and connected to the surface terminals at Drummond's Shoal Creek Mine in Alabama. The system has proven to be a useful and practical system for improving safety and efficiency in coal-mining operation. The Shoal Creek Mine is a new, large coal mine operated by Drummond with two longwall panels. The Blue Creek seam is the primary source of coal production. It is located at a depth of 275 to 440 m (900 to 1,450 ft) below the surface with an approximate 2% southwest dip. Typical strata conditions are represented by two stratigraphic columns (Figs. la and b). A fireclay/dark shale parting (called Middleman) 0.2- 0.7-m- (1- to 2.5-ft-) thick exists between the Mary Lee and Blue Creek seams. Mining conditions vary from area to area. This mainly depends on the Blue Creek seam thickness that ranges from 0.9 to 2.9 m (3 to 9.5 ft). The thickness of the Mary Lee and the parting is relatively consistent with a to¬tal of 0.9 m (3 ft). He found that there was a departure of about 86 per cent. from a linear relationship between rate of flow and pressure, for a specimen of Dunnville sandstone for pressure drops not exceeding 60 cm. of mercury. The specimen was approximately 4 cm. in diameter and 5.1 cm. in length. Over the same range of pressure he found a departure of 45 per cent. for a specimen of Madison sandstone. For unconsolidated sands he found departures as great as 49 per cent. for pressure drops of 70 cm. of mercury; for pressure drops not exceeding a few inches of water he obtained a close approximation to a linear relation. Two methods of stress measurements have been executed on the surface and underground to con-struct an oil storage cavern using hydro-fracturing and overcoring method. The first measurement has been performed to make a design of the caverns before excavating and the second to confirm the stress state during excavation. Six measurements have been carried out in the hydro-fracturing test at the depths between –17.8 and 54.5m from the sea level and a single measurement in the overcoring test in a single borehole at the depth of –21m from the sea level. The ratios of the maximum horizontal to vertical stress measured using hydro-fracturing and overcoring method are 2.95 and 3.1, respectively. Also, the orientations of the maximum horizontal stress are N53E and N58E. These measurements show that both methods give almost same results and significant horizontal stresses are acting on this cavern. The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is 57 km (35 miles) long and consists of two par-allel single-track tubes with an ex-cavation diameter ranging from 8.8 to 9.5 m (28.8 to 31.2 ft). These are interlinked by cross-passages every 312 m (1,000 ft). Two multifunction stations (MFS) are located in the sections Sedrun and Faido, at one-third and two-thirds of the entire tunnel length (Fig. 1). These will be used for the diversion of trains to the other main tube via tunnel crossovers, for the housing of tech-nical infrastructure and equipment and for potential emergency stops. To reduce construction time, the GBT was divided into five sections and was excavated from several sites simultaneously. The tunnel was excavated from the two portals, Erstfeld in the north and Bodio in the south, and also from three intermediate attacks, with their corresponding access tunnels, in Amsteg and Faido and two vertical 800-m (2,624-ft) deep shafts in Sedrun.

The Butte quartz monzonite is the host rock for early porphyry copper style mineralization and subsequent mesothermal-epithermal, enargite-gold style veining that transects the district. The east-west Anaconda system veins sustained mining for over a century. They include the Emma, Anaconda-Original, Syndicate, Badger-State and Alice-Rainbow veins, each with strike lengths of more than 3,660-m (12,000-ft) and vertical continuity in excess of 1,370-m (4,500-ft) with mining widths from 1.5- to 15-m (5- to 50-ft). These characteristics are unique to Butte. The incredible dimensions and tenor of these veins have yet to be surpassed and Butte is still touted as being the “Richest Hill on Earth.” The Anaconda Company was formed in 1895 to develop underground copper reserves in the district. It eventually consolidated all operations under one company. Production from underground mining continued through the mid-1970s. Openpit mining in the Berkeley pit began in 1955 with the extraction of supergene ores, along with the remnants of deeper horsetail zones inaccessible to the underground mines.

The Pseudo capacitance of layered type Mn02 electrode material for electrochemical capacitors (EC's) was investigated. MnO2 was synthesized in our laboratory. Mn02 was prepared from heating of KMn04 at 300°C in air. Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) experiments were carried out using three electrode system, Saturated calomel electrode as reference electrode, platinum mesh as a counter electrode, and MnOz composite material mounted in a platinum mesh used as a working electrode. Two kinds of composite working electrode materials were used, one was mixture of MnOz and 25 wt% acetylene black, while the other was MnOz, 25 wt% acetylene black and 25 wt% carbon. All the experiments were carried out at 25OC. A maximum specific capacitance of 130 Fig and 118 Fig were observed at the scan rate of 2 mV/s and 20 mV/s respectively in 1M KC1 for composite electrode made with carbon. Results obtained in this study are compared with that of other electrode materials.

Gold is sufficiently valuable that concentrations as small as 1 p.p.m. may support low-cost mining. Mindful of this, Sunoco Energy Development Company (Sunedco) obtained fire-assay analyses on some sulfide-rich sandstone encountered during routine drilling. Initial fire-assay values from independent laboratories indicated some significant gold values and independent analysis by atomic-absorption spectroscopy also indicated detectable gold at economically interesting concentrations. Sunoco geologists realized the potential for spurious results inherent in both fire assaying and atomic-absorption spectroscopy. Fire assaying that relies on gold measurement by weight requires perfect separation of gold from all other elements, Imperfect separation may artificially enhance apparent gold concentrations. Atomic-absorption-spectroscopy (AAS) measurements are potentially subject to interferences from other elements. For example, Beamish and Van Loon (1977, p.4) report AAS measurements of 4 p.p.m. Au to be characteristic of completely barren soil samples when samples are prepared by standard dissolution in HC1 to form solutions of about 10,000 p.p.m. total cations (mostly Na, Ca, Mg, Al, and Fe) .

High angle conveyor (HA C) systems in open-¬pit mining offer many advantages over the traditional, truck only, haulage systems. These include superior energy efficiency, less dependency on petroleum products, less sensitivity to inflation, less excavation for the amount of ore recovered, and less ramp construction and maintenance costs. Various high angle conveying systems and the corresponding characteristics of the high angle conveyor are illustrated. Discussion includes the range of HAC systems from the low capacity (up to 1.8 kt/h or 2000 stph), low lift (10.7 to 36.6 m or 35 to 120 ft), continuously mobile to the moderate capacity (1.8 to 3.6 kt/h or 2000 to 4000 stph), moderate lift (36.6 to 76.2 m or 120 to 250 ft), intermittently mobile to the high capacity (greater than 3.6 kt/h or 4000 stph), high lift (greater than 76.2 m or 250 ft), semimobile. Combinations of the above as required for the various open-pit mining operations are also discussed.

A series of single-fired (simultaneously detonated) explosions were conducted in an Arizona copper mine. The explosions spanned yields from 1700 to 13600 lbs (773 to 6169 kg) and were all detonated in an approximate 100 m by 100 m area. In order to quantify the effect of the mine free-face, the individual explosions were also detonated under three different emplacement conditions including at the free-face of the mine under normal burden, twice normal burden and fully contained. The purposes of these experiments were to investigate: (1) Generation of in-mine and regional phases such as Pg, Pn, and Lg from mining explosions; (2) Quantification of the relationship between yield and seismic amplitudes; (3) Quantification of the effect of confinement; and (4) Similarities and differences between single-fired waveforms and those from delay-fired explosions. Instrumentation was deployed at near-source (100-700 m) and in mine (1-5km) distances. Empirical scaling relations for the different shots in this test series were developed in order to quantify the effects of yield and confinement.

Tanking of tunnels is now often specified when inflows exceed as little as 1 L/s/km with a unit distance of 100 m. To demonstrate inflows over a 100 m segment of a tunnel are less than 0.1 L/s with a standard error of 0.01 L/s by timed, gravity filled, volume measurement up and downstream of the segment, the measuring cylinder volume (L) must exceed 10 Q, where Q is the flow in L/s, and the number measurements taken and averaged must exceed 20 . If a standard error of 0.02 L/s is acceptable then 5Q2 measurements must be taken and averaged. A series of plate loading tests were carried out on a loam ground in order to investigate the influences of the plate size and the loading rate on the observed load-settlement relations. Two circular plates having diameters of 0.3 m and 1.0 m were used. Three types of loading methods were employed; 1) static cyclic maintained load test, 2) static continuous load test, and 3) rapid (dynamic) plate load test. An interpretation method called non-linear damping method was used to estimate a static load-settlement relation from the rapid plate load test signals. The derived static load-settlement relations match well with the measured results from the static load tests.

The Wachovia Headquarters and Arts and Cultural Campus project in Charlotte, NC includes a 1.5 million square foot, 48-story office tower, two museums, an Afro-American cultural center and a 1,200 seat theater for the performing arts. Public access to the Cultural Campus is through two pedestrian tunnels constructed under city streets connecting to parking garages. The 5.7 m wide by 4.7 m high mined tunnels were procured through a design-build contract. The tunnels were designed as initial/final shotcrete linings with a sprayed water barrier sandwiched between layers of shotcrete. In addition, the mix design was supplemented with a cementitious admixture to develop internal water resistant properties in the shotcrete.

Longwalls using shearers in seam heights of less than 1.2 m (48 inches) are relatively rare in the U.S. Westmoreland Coal Company is currently operating a shearer-equipped longwall at a cutting height of 1.17 m (46 inches) in its Bullitt Mine. This face has averaged 2795 metric tons/day of operation since its startup on April 3, 1984. Longwall productivity in thin seams is substantially impacted by equipment reliability and availability of useable working room for travel and access. This paper addresses the design criteria used in selecting this face equipment, with the goal of maximizing these two parameters. Equipment discussed includes shearers. face conveyor, shields, stageloader, and emulsion system.

Gold mineralisation was first noted in 1983 at the Wapolu Point area of Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea (PNG) during a follow-up regional reconnaissance program. Subsequent exploration programs through to late 1987 completed 22,147m of costean trench sampling, 553 aircore/RC/diamond core drill holes (16,970.5m total) and metallurgical testwork, predominantly on the Wapolu grid in two mineralised areas.Subsequently in 1988, geostat-istical global and polygonal resources were calculated for the main mineral-ised zones, Didigayagaya and Dagwalala. In 1992, a 'probable total reserve' of 1.9Mf @ 2.4g/t with a 1.2g/t cut-off was calculated for these prospects.

The main thrust of this paper covers the design, installation techniques and experience associated with the installation of eleven 1.5 m (4'-11") and three 2.87 m (9'-5") diameter shafts in 15 to 23 meters (50 to 75 ft) of water over 1.6 Km (a mile) out in the Atlantic Ocean. The approach implemented, permits the use of pre-fabricated shaft linings and incorporates a safe dry-tap method for connecting the offshore shafts to tunnels driven blind from deep land shafts over 4.8 Km (3 miles) away. This tunnel-shaft system is a unique venture employed at the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station to meet plant cooling water requirements.

Over the past two decades, declining ore body grades and increased operating and construction costs have provided an incentive for the development of progressively larger flotation machines. As a result, the 1.7-2.8 m3 (60-100 cu ft) flotation machine of the 1950's and 1960's is being rapidly replaced by large volume machines. The result has been improved flotation machine specific capacity (tph processed per sq ft of floor space); specific power (hp per tph processed); and process control simplicity. The recent development and satisfactory plant evaluation of the 28 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine allows economic and operating advantages in high tonnage mill applications. Some principles of mechanically induced air flotation and the development of the large 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine are reviewed here. Performance evaluation in beneficiating metalliferous ores-copper, zinc, and iron-is also given and recently completed plant results provided. Mining lower grade ore bodies results in the need to process increased tonnage in the concentrator. This greater tonnage requires more individual flotation machines, unless individual machine capacity, or cell volume, is increased. As the ore processing rate of the concentrator increases, the benefits of progressively larger individual cells in the flotation section become more significant. The accompanying figure illustrates the advantages of a larger flotation machine. In the figure, the number of machines in the rougher-scavenger section is related to the plant tonnage for three sizes of flotation machine: 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft), 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft), 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft). The 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) flotation machine results in 95 fewer machines, compared to the 8.5 m3 (300 cu ft) machine at 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) feed. The flotation cell reduction is, of course, doubled at a plant production rate of 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Using fewer flotation machines saves floor space. The 14.2 m3 (500 cu ft) and the 28.3 m3 (1000 cu ft) machines result in a floor area reduction, relative to the 8.5 (300 cu ft) machine requirements, of 134.7 and 418.1 m2 (1450 and 4500 sq ft), respectively, for the 45.4 kt/d (50,000 stpd) rate and 269.4 and 836.1 m2 (2900 and 9000 sq ft), respectively, for the 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd) rate. In addition, flotation practice has shown that the "specific power intensity"-power per unit cell volume-is less for increased cell size. This results in a power draw reduction, for the rougher-scavenger circuit, of between 552 and 686 kW (740 and 920 hp) for the 14.2 and 28.3 m3 (500 and 1000 cu ft) machines, respectively, when processing 90.7 kt/d (100,000 stpd). Fewer cells improve machine control and simplify maintenance needs while reducing floor space and power requirements. These are tangible incentives for the development of large flotation machines for high tonnage applications. Flotation Principles The accompanying figure shows how key hydrodynamic regions influence the performance of a mechanically induced air flotation machine. Air is induced into the fluid from the top of the cell, due to the mechanical action of a rotating impeller. The impeller circulates the liquid, or pulp, from the bottom of the cell. The result of these dual flow paths is the mixing of the two fluids and one solid phase in the highly agitated region where physical contact between the air bubbles, and the solid particles to be floated, is accomplished. INTRODUCTION The introduction of 165-mm (61/z-in.) holes to underground mining operations has made possible the application of Canadian Industries Ltd's (CIL) vertical crater retreat (VCR) mining method, illustrated in the accompanying sketches. This unique and revolutionary new application of spherical charge technology (see the Appendix), when applied to primary stopes and pillar recovery, eliminates raise boring, slot cutting, and dilu¬tion of ore by backfill; greatly improves fragmentation; reduces labor and time requirements; eliminates uphole drilling and blasting; and minimizes or completely elimi¬nates damages by blasts to the walls and retreating backs of the stope or pillar. If vertical large diameter holes are drilled on a designed pattern from a cut over a stope or pillar to bottom in the back of the undercut, and spherical charges of explosives are placed within these holes at the calculated optimum distance from the back of the undercut and detonated, a vertical thickness of ore will be blasted downwards into the previously mined area. Repeating this loading and blasting procedure, min¬ing of the stope or pillar retreats in the form of horizontal slices in a vertical upwards direction until the top sill is blasted and the mining of a stope or pillar is completed. The VCR method is also applicable to drop raises and has the potential to replace all other raising methods under most circumstances. PILLAR RECOVERY Levack Mine Inco Metals Co., Ontario Div., provided the first opportunity for the method in pillar recovery. The Levack mine's high grade ore pillar No. 4800 on the 975-m (3200-ft) level was used for the production¬scale experiment (Figs. 1 to 3). The pillar was about 49 m (160 ft) long, 6 m (20 ft) wide, and 20 to 26 m (65 to 85 ft) high. The mined area on both sides of the pillar was backfilled with a 1:30 cement:sand mixture. The pillar was removed in two phases. In phase 1, the standard uphole method was used to blast down the 18-m (60-ft) long section of waste from the bottom of the ore into the undercut. From the pillar's top sill, 165-mm (61/a-in.) holes were drilled downward into the pillar, and by measuring the depth of the holes, the results of the uphole blast were determined and roof line 1 was established. The bottom of each hole was plugged, then filled with sand to place the center of gravity of each spherical charge (loaded from the top sill) at a predetermined optimum distance from the horizontal free surface. The charges were then detonated. After detonation, both draw drifts were full of extremely well-broken material. The depth of each hole was measured again, and the plot of these depths re¬sulted in roof line 2. The same blasting procedure was repeated and the resultant new back elevation was marked by roof line 3. The poor results of the initial uphole blast at one location (notice the peak in area 1) appeared to influ¬ence the subsequent new backs. A third blast success¬fully evened the back, and resulted in roof line 4. An unblasted slab averaging 6.3 m (20.9 ft) thick remained below the pillar's top elevation as the final sill. In all three spherical charge blasts fragmentation of the blasted material was extremely fine. The backfill was fully exposed on both sides of the now-blasted pillar. The backfill remained undamaged and the ore was not diluted by sand. The remnants of all the 165-mm (61/2 -in.) holes remained clean and undamaged, and the holes had well-defined bottoms that could be easily measured and plugged. Each blast took down a 3.9 to 4.2-m (13 to 14-ft) thick horizontal slab of ore. Productivity was three times greater than that of the previously practiced cut-and-fill method. Since this was the first such experiment, blasting the remaining 6-m (20-ft) thick final slab was the sub¬ject of some deliberation. If the described method was repeated, we could have ended up with a 1.8-m (6-ft) thick sill unsafe to work on. The Greater Vancouver Water District is currently constructing the Seymour-Capilano Water Filtration Project to enhance the quality of drinking water in the Vancouver metropolitan area. The Seymour-Capilano Water Filtration Project comprises the 1,800 million litres per day Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant, the 1,080million litres per day Capilano Pumping Station, twin tunnels with associated shafts, and the Capilano Energy Recovery Facility. The twin tunnels will convey raw water under pressure from the Capilano Reservoir to the Seymour Filtration Plant and return treated (filtered) water for distribution. The Twin Tunnels component of the project comprises twin, 3.7 m diameter, 7.2 km TBM bored tunnels, the 180 m deep Seymour Shaft as the main launch shaft, and two 4 m diameter, 268 m deep raise bore exit shafts at Capilano. The Twin Tunnels have been planned as predominantly unlined tunnels sited at depth entirely within granitic bedrock and cross under two major buried glacial valleys of breadths in excess of 1500 metres that are filled with glacial sediments to depths up to 200 metres. The maximum overburden along the tunnel alignment is approximately 400 metres. Comprehensive site investigations and studies were completed during the detailed design stage of the project. The construction of the twin tunnels started in the fall of 2004 and is planned to be completed by mid-2008.
