"Ventilation systems are not only an integral part of any underground mine design but are a significant contributor to the mine’s capital and operating costs. The ventilation and cooling design systems presented in this paper were part of the prefeasibility evaluation of an underground platinum mine in South Africa. The mine would ultimately operate at the depth of 1,200 m below surface with a proposed 4 Mtpa production rate. The proposed mining operation is a highly mechanized operation using diesel equipment. Significant daily production rate, large amount of equipment and expansive nature of the operation, contributed to a challenging while flexible ventilation design requirements. This paper presents how to safely and efficiently optimize capital expenditure and operating costs associated with the mine air cooling and refrigeration system through practical ventilation design practices. Successful capital and operational savings by modulating installation and commissioning of refrigeration facilities can influence the economic realization of such systems. The adapted planning and design approach provided a cost-effective advantage while complying with design safety and regulations. INTRODUCTION This paper outlines a prefeasibility evaluation of the heat loads and related cooling system to be employed at the proposed platinum mine. The paper also provides appropriate details for a comprehensive understanding of the applied methodology. The proposed mine will be a trackless underground operation using a combination of mining methods. Initially, ore zones with vertical thicknesses greater than or equal to 18 m will be mined using the long-hole stoping (LHS) method, while thinner ore zones will be mined using mechanized drift-and-fill or drift-and-bench methods; hence, a highly mechanized operation with LHDs, trucks, drill rigs, personnel carriers, etc. is envisioned. Broken rock (ore and waste) will be transported by the means of trucks to the main passes (ore and waste) and collection points. Mining zones identified in the project occur at depths ranging between approximately 700 m to 1,600 m below surface. Primary access to the mine will be via a 1,100 m deep, 10 m diameter production shaft (named Shaft No. 2), three additional shafts will be sunk to provide future ventilation and production support. Three main access levels are established as primary haulage levels and include a series of interconnecting ramps. Additional mining sublevels will be developed as necessary. Figure 1 shows the proposed shaft locations and main access levels in a 3-D elevated view. Mining is performed using highly productive mechanized methods. For this reason, an annual ventilation estimate is based on requirements for mobile equipment (i.e., 0.06 m3/s/kW). The air requirements imposed on the underground operation is further influenced by equipment heat loads, auto compression, and virgin rock temperature, as the main sources of in-mine heat."

Autocompression and virgin rock tempera ture have a marked influence on the ventilation of the lower levels at North Broken Hill Limited N.S.W. To maintain comfortable working temp- eratures without penalty to working hours, increase in airflow or the cooling of the work area is necessary. The use of refrigerated air cooling is discussed. Ventilation of underground mining opera tions at North Broken Hill Limited is accomplished by downcasting air through No.3 shaft, the main operating shaft, 1581 m deep, with additional air through No.1 shaft (542 m) 2 and No.2 shaft (978 m), both no longer opera- tional shafts. Air is upcasted through No.3 ventilation shaft which is 4.9 m diameter and concrete lined, from the No.28 level (1140 m) to the surface. On the surface level of this shaft is a horizontally mounted Richardson 4800 mm diameter single stage axial flow fan with adjustable pitch rotor blades.

Dynatec Mining Ltd. contracted to sink a 1500-m (4920 ft) concrete-lined shaft for Falconbridge Nickel Mines in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The shaft has an inside diameter of 6.3 m (20.5 ft) and is equipped with steel furnishings. Dynatec used the owner-supplied, 4.6-m (15.1 ft) diam, double-drum hoist to sink the shaft. For muck removal, 12.5¬t (13.8-st) buckets were used. The capacity of the concrete-¬placement buckets was 4.6 m3 (162.4 ft3). One of the unique features of the shaft sinking operation was the use of a two-¬boom, electric-hydraulic drill jumbo permanently mounted in the shaft sinking stage. An in-the-hole (ITH) drill was used to drill a 200-mm (8-in.) cut hole for the 4.8-m (16 ft), full face rounds. This paper describes the performance obtained with the electric-hydraulic drilling equipment and the high-capacity muck removal and concreting equipment.

THE martensitic transformation in the ß-phase of the Cu-Zn system has been the subject of several investigations. The transformation is known to be reversible and to be affected by stress. Its temperature range has been determined as a function of composition. In the investigation reported here, the effect of tensile stresses on the transformation was investigated quantitatively. Some information was also obtained on the thermoelastic behavior of the martensite formed in the first stages of the transformation. Most of the experiments were done with alloy E of an earlier investigation;' this alloy analyzed 60.49 pct Cu and 39.51 pet Zn by weight. The methods of shaping and heat treatment were also essentially the same as those previously used. The stress was applied to the specimen immersed in a cooling liquid. The transformation was followed by measuring the electrical resistance with a Kelvin bridge and the elongation with a cathetometer. Fig. 1 shows the M, temperature as a function of stress. Resistance and strain measurements gave essentially identical values. The results suggest a roughly linear relation between M. and in the range investigated, up to 12 kg s mm". At higher stresses, plastic deformation begins to interfere seriously with this relationship. The increase of M, with stress is consistent with published work on the effect of stress on the martensitic transformation. The slope of the curve, 4°C per kg mm ", is of the same order of magnitude as the corresponding value calculated for steel.' Fig. 1 also shows the difference, AM, between the temperature of 50 pct transformation on cooling, as measured by changes in length, and that of 50 pct reverse transformation on heating. This difference, which may be considered a measure of the hysteresis, increases with stress; the decrease at highest stresses is probably associated with plastic deformation. Preliminary work using only resistance measurements was done with an alloy containing 60.15 pct Cu and 39.79 pct Zn by weight. The results indicated higher values o-F M, in agreement with the known variation of M. with composition.' The effect of stress on M, (2°C per kg mm-') was of the same order of magnitude as that shown in Fig. 1 for composition E. An increase in hysteresis with stress was also found. The following experiment was made in order to investigate a partially transformed structure. A specimen of alloy E was cooled to — 85°C under a stress of 4.7 kg mm-'. Under these conditions, the martensitic transformation started but did not go to completion. The stress was then released and the specimen cooled to — 105°C. Fig. 2 shows the measured elongation c. The first change in the slope of the curve indicates the beginning of the transformation under stress. Removing the load at —85°C caused a decrease in length to the value corresponding to the elastic elongation of the parent phase resulting from the applied stress. Hence, the marten-site formed in the first part of the experiment apparently disappears completely and without hysteresis upon the release of the stress. The increase in length on further cooling indicates renewed formation of martensite. These conclusions are consistent with the concept of "thermoelastic" martensite," which has been confirmed by test." Acknowledgments The authors are greatly indebted to Professor M. INTRODUCTION Kennecott Copper Corp.'s Tintic Div. Burgin mine is a 725 t/d (800 stpd) lead-zinc producer, located in the east Tintic mining district, 5.6 km (3.5 miles) east of Eureka, and 130 km (80 miles) south of Salt Lake City, UT. The Burgin mining complex includes three shafts, shop, dry, and office facilities, and a 454 t/d (500 stpd) flotation concentrator. Production and ser¬vice entry to the mine is through a 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft, and a three-compart¬ment rectangular shaft. A connection with the Apex No. 2 shaft and the Burgin mine provides a second exhaust airway. Bear Creek Mining Co., Kennecott's exploration sub¬sidiary, began exploration of the Burgin mine area in 1957 with the sinking of the 335 m (1100 ft) deep No. 1 shaft. A station was cut at the 320-m (1050-ft) level of the shaft and extensive drifting, diamond drilling, and some winzing and raising confirmed the presence of a major lead-zinc ore body, the main portion of which oc¬curred below a hot saline water table. Surface facilities and the 4.26-m (14-ft) diam concrete-lined production shaft were completed in 1966. Ore production has been steadily increased to 725 t/ d (800 stpd) since 1966. The collar elevation of the No. 2 production shaft is 1731 m (5678 ft) above sea level. The mine's three levels, the 1050, 1200, and 1300 are at elevations of 1414.6, 1356.4, and 1338.1 m (4587, 4450, and 4390 ft), respectively. The approximate elevation of the hot saline water table is 1382.6 m (4536 ft). The earliest production on the east Tintic mining district was from the Eureka Lilly mine in 1909. Later, in 1916, the Tintic Standard mine was discovered, and pro¬duced ores with a gross value of $80,000,000 through 1956. The Eureka Standard mine located 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of the Burgin mine produced ore worth $12,000,000 from fissures in the Tintic quartzite along the Eureka Standard fault. Ores produced from the east Tintic mining district through 1971 are valued at $151.3 million. The production from the entire Tintic district is approximately $500 million. GEOLOGY The Burgin ore deposit occurs as replacement bodies in limestone, dolomite, and shale. Numerous fault struc¬tures and rock formations make the mine geology com¬plex. The mineralization is strongly associated with sev¬eral major geological features, which include the Ophir formation, consisting of limestone, dolomite, and shale as the favorable host rock, and the structural influence of the east Tintic thrust, the Eureka Standard and sev¬eral other significant faults. Fig. 1 depicts the Burgin 1300 level workings, a generalized configuration of the ore body, and the main geological features. Covering the quartzite, limestone, dolomite, and shale facies enclosing the Burgin ore deposit are 183 to 274 m (600 to 900 ft) of andesite. The Burgin ore consists of massive sulfide and oxide lead-zinc ores with significant silver and cadmium val¬ues. The main ore minerals are galena, cerrusite, and spalerite. In a long term toxicology study SPF, F-344 rats were exposed 6 hours/day, 5 days/week for up to 24-months to a special test toner at 0, 1 (low), 4 (medium), and 16 (high) mg/m3, or Ti02 at 5 mg/m3, or Si02 at 1 mg/m3 by the inhalation route. The test toner was composed of about 90% random, high molecular weight acrylic copolymer and 10% high purity, medium color, furnace type, carbon black. It was enriched in fine particles such that the respirable aerosol concentrations (ACGIH) were to 0, 0.35, 1.4 and 5.6 mg/m3. There were no effects of exposure on survival, causes of death, body weight, food consumption or clinical chemistry and hematology parameters. There was no evidence for systemic or upper respiratory system toxicity as all of the changes were restricted to the lungs and associated lymph nodes. The lung tumor frequencies in the control (air and Ti02) and toner exposed groups were comparable. There were no changes at the low exposure level, which is the most relevant in regard to potential human exposures. The lung changes at the high exposure level consisted of decreased alveolar clearance, increased toner retention, increased lung weight, chronic inflammation, decreased pulmonary function and a moderate degree of focal fibrosis in all animals. The changes in the middle exposure level were smaller in magnitude than at the high level, and a very slight degree of fibrosis was found in 20% of the animals. In a follow-up investigation, female F-344 rats were exposed to one of three toner concentrations; control, low (10 mg/m3) or high (40 mg/m3) for 13 weeks followed by five, 13 week observation intervals. At the low exposure level, slight clearance retardation and modest inflammatory changes were observed at the end of exposure. They returned to normal values within six months post-exposure. In contrast, at the high exposure level, increased lung weight, decreased alveolar clearance and a disproportionate increase in toner retention, as well as an inflammatory response, were noted, which persisted throughout the post-exposure interval. While no significant histopathological changes were noted at the end of exposure, a very slight degree of fibrosis was observed in all of the animals in the high exposure group, after 65 weeks of observation. All of the above alterations are ascribable to "lung overloading", a generic response to excessive amounts of any dust retained in the lungs for a prolonged time interval. Published accounts in the toxicology literature document that long-term inhalation of large quantities of even innocuous particles such as Ti02, carbon black, petroleum coke, toner, and other polymeric and insoluble materials has resulted in a spectrum of generically similar pulmonary changes. Scaling of the rat-data, using 1 mg dust/g of lung as a threshold for "lung overloading", normal ventilatory parameters and 300-500 day human retention halftimes project "lung overloading" upon long-term exposure to insoluble respirable dust above 0.2-0.33 mg/m3. Other types of information are consistent with an exposure limit in the range of 0.4-1.0 mg/m3 for respirable dust. The absence of definitive toxicology data in support of the current OSHA respirable nuisance dust limit, coupled with the lack of sound epidemiology data, indicate the need to reexamine the validity of the current nuisance dust health standard.

[ ] In November 2005, Essroc Cement, part of the Italcementi Group, commissioned a long overland conveyor at their Nazareth plant in Pennsylvania. This conveyor, tagged CV-105, was designed to transport 1000 tph of limestone from the quarry to the kiln, and 400 tph of hot clinker (at 300°F) at back from the kiln to a handling facility about halfway back. Conveyor CV-105 is 8969 ft (2733 m) long. It gains 152 ft (46 m) of elevation in the first 1570 ft (480 m), then is mostly flat for the remaining 7400 ft (2250 m) (Figure 1). After the limestone is discharged at the head pulley, hot clinker is loaded onto the return side of the belt. This clinker can be discharged at one of two locations.

The upgrading project for two hydropower plants in Slovenia, Europe, requires two new pressure tunnels: Plave II (5.9 km Flysch) and Doblar II (3.6 km Limestone). It is the worldwide largest application of the Double-Shield TBM technology combined with an extremely thin-walled monoshell honeycomb lining system. The first drive has been completed by end of June 2000 achieving best performances of 50m/d and almost 1,100m/mth. In September 2000 the TBM started the second tunnel without any required adjustments due to geological or other reasons. Another 52m/d have been bored already within one production day of two 8 h shifts achieving a maximum penetration rate of more than 6m/h. The completion of the Doblar drive can be expected by February 2001.

China’s vibrant economic growth is built on coal, the source of two thirds of the country’s electricity. Over 95 percent of China’s coal is mined underground with the average mining depth at 410 m and in-creasing at 10 m per year; today, the deepest Chinese coal mines have exceeded 1,000 m. With increasing mining depths, there are greater challenges including increased methane emissions and spontaneous combustion. According to the government, nearly half of China’s coal mines are classified as gassy (with specific gas content at least 10 m3/mt). Coalbed methane (CBM) is a clean energy source. However, only a small percentage of the methane is captured, and the rest is vented directly to the atmosphere. This paper describes China’s CBM resource, its production and utilization.

Shear strength parameters of compacted clay liners are needed to analyse the stability of mine waste dumps containing compacted clay liners as sealing layers for potentially acid forming waste rock. A representative clay sample was supplied by McArthur River Mine from the mine site in the Northern Territory, Australia, with an average as-supplied gravimetric moisture content of about 13.6%. The clay was compacted in a 100 mm by 100 mm direct shear box at the as-supplied moisture content to a dry density of 1.85 t/m3, representing the field compaction specification adopted by the mine. To determine the peak and ultimate shear strengths of the compacted clay, single-stage direct shear testing was carried out at nominal initial normal stresses of 50 kPa, 100 kPa and 200 kPa, representing shallow depths of burial in the North Overburden Emplacement Facility of about 2.8 m, 5.6 m and 11.1 m, respectively (assuming a waste rock wet unit weight of 18 kN/m3). Three shearing rates of 1 mm/min (rapid), 0.1 mm/min (intermediate) and 0.01 mm/min (slow) were applied to study the influence of shearing rate on shear strength. In addition, the development of a residual shear plane was tested by reversal and re-shearing in the direct shear box. In the first shearing, the peak and ultimate shear strengths are determined. The normal load was then removed and the box rewound to its starting position. The normal load was then re-applied and the specimen re-sheared. Two reversals were applied to each specimen, and it was found that there was no significant reduction in shear strength. Finally, based on a range of shear strengths obtained in the laboratory for McArthur River Mine clay and other materials by various laboratories over time, shear strength parameters for the compacted clay were recommended for use by the mine.CITATION:Xu, Y, Williams, D J and Hacker, J, 2018. On a continuous miner coal face methane concentrations are affected by the quantity of fresh intake air reaching the face. When mining the box cut on a 12.2-m (40-ft) two-pass extended cut face, the continuous miner is always at the point of deepest penetration, and operation of the machine-mounted dust scrubber and water spray system improve the flow of fresh air to the end of the box cut. However, when the continuous miner leaves the box cut to begin cutting the 40-ft slab, little is known about how much ventilation air reaches the end of the box cut. The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducted a full-scale study to answer this question. Tests were run to determine how much ventilation air reaches the end of the box cut with the continuous miner at three locations in the 40-fttwo-pass extended cut mining sequence; at the end of the 40-ft box cut, at the start of the 40-ft slab cut, and 6.1 m (20 ft) into the slab cut. During these tests, methane gas was uniformly released at the end of the 40-ft box cut. Methane concentrations measured0.3 m (1 ft) from the roof and face of the box cut were used to estimate face airflow quantities. Fresh air flow rates of 1.89and 4.72 m/sec (4,000 and 10.000 cfm), scrubber flow rates of 0, 4,000 and 10,000 cfm, water spray pressures of 0 and3827 kPa (0 and 120 psi), and a blowing curtain setback position of 15.2m (50 ft) were used during these tests. To improve ventilation to the end of the 40-ft box cut when the continuous miner was starting the 40-ft slab cut and 20 ft into the slab cut, the blowing curtain was advanced from its 50-ft setback to locations 40-ft and then 8.5 m (28 ft) from the face. The Bureau of Mines, together with Foster Miller Inc., has developed a compact, high pressure scrubber system for continuous miners. Powered by water energy alone, it can move up to 1.4 m3/s (3,000 cfm) of air and scrub a significant amount of the dust in the air. Full- scale model and underground trials showed excellent performance. Operated at 8.3 x 10[3] kPa (1,200 psi) and 38 L/m (10 gpm), the scrubber has reduced operator and return dust concentrations by more than 50 pct. This paper describes the full-scale model development, system fabrication and underground evaluations of this novel and inexpensive scrubber.

INTRODUCTION There are many mine planning factors in sublevel caving, as in the other mining systems, which when varied can substantially alter mining costs and profit¬ability. In this chapter, the following four topics are addressed with regard to economic optimization of sub¬level caving: production planning, haulage level spacing, orepass spacing, and extraction cutoff. The costs used here are the right order of magnitude but since each mine is unique, they should be considered only as examples. The objective is to demonstrate the tech¬niques which can be used. In a real mine, the evalua¬tions must be done using actual costs and conditions. It is difficult to predict exactly the costs involved, and therefore it is valuable to perform a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the effect of making incorrect as¬sumptions. Since the mining industry is very capital intensive, the effect of the interest rate must also be studied. PRODUCTION PLAN FOR AN IRON ORE DEPOSIT Introduction The first and most important thing to do before de¬signing an underground mine is to establish a long-range production plan. Such a plan is necessary for all eco¬nomic evaluations and should provide information about the lifetime of the mine, how much ore and waste must be handled per year, how much development per year is required, etc. An example is given in the following section. Problem In an iron ore mine sublevel caving is used. The iron content is 42%, and the mine supplies a pelletizing plant with an annual capacity of 3 million t/a. The ore body is shown in Fig. 1. The length of the ore body is 1000 m and the width is 100 m. Each slice is 10 m high, and there are 10 m be¬tween crosscuts, each of which has an area of 20 m2. The density of the ore is 3.5 t/m3. The spacing between rings is 2 m, and the extraction is 100%. The iron con¬tent is 66% in the pellets and 6% in the tailings. The problem is to develop a detailed production plan. A typical sublevel caving sequence is shown in Fig. 2. Solution Amount of ore per meter of crosscut: 20 X 3.5 = 70 t. Number of crosscuts per slice= 100. Length of crosscuts per slice: 100 X 100 = 10 000. Ore from crosscuts per slice = 10 000 m X 20 m2 X 3.5 = 700 000 t. Number of sublevel caving rounds per slice: 10 000/2 = 5000. Area for each blast in sublevel caving: 10 X 10 - 20 = 80 m2. Amount of ore per blast: 80 m2 X 6 m X 3.5 = 560 t. Extraction: 100% (see extraction curve Fig. 12). Loaded ore per blast: 75% or 420 t. Loaded waste per blast: 25% or 140 t. Total: 560 t. Total amount of rock from each blast in the sublevel caving: Ore: 560 t of which 2 X 70 = 140 t from develop¬ment work and 420 t from sublevel caving. Waste: 140 t. Total: 700 t. The ore needed per year is 3 X (66-6)/42-6 5 mil¬lion t. Necessary number of blasts per year= 5,000,000/ 560 = 8929. Distance to develop per year = 8929 blasts per year X 2 m per blast 17 858 m. Total amount/year: Ore from development work 17 858 m x 70 t/m = 1.25 million t/a Ore from sublevel caving: 8929 blasts per year X 420 tons per blast = 3.75 million t/a 5.00 million t/a Waste rock dilution: 8929 blasts per year X 140 tons per blast 1.25 million t/a Total amount to hoist 6.25 million t/ a The amount of ore from development work will in¬crease a little if the horizontal drift is placed in the ore body and not in the footwall. In this example the ore loss in 20%, and the waste rock dilution is also 20%. After taking the ore loss into account, the lifetime for 100 m of the ore body will be:

"Steel wire mesh is the accepted standard for roof and rib skin control at most coal mines in the United States. Wire mesh is delivered to the mine in bundles that are heavy and awkward to handle. The large size, stiffness, and weight of the wire mesh can present a safety hazard in transporting underground and storing on the roof bolter. Installing wire mesh on the roof and ribs with the roof bolter can be a challenge as well.Synthetic mesh is lighter than wire mesh and can be folded and rolled into a safe, manageable size. A single synthetic mesh roll large enough to cover the roof and ribs in a deep cut can be safely handled by two men. The roof bolter is designed to carry and dispense the roll as it advances and installs primary roof support, resulting in a single pass roof and rib ground control solution. This paper focuses on the design and implementation of the roof bolter synthetic mesh handling system developed by J. H. Fletcher & Co., Huesker, Inc., and Oxbow Mining.INTRODUCTIONRoof and rib skin control in some coal mines has been an issue since mining first began. Roof and rib skin problems vary from mine to mine. The type of roof rock material exposed after mining; the mine atmosphere; and stresses from depth of cover, over mining, and/or undermining are some of the variables that can contribute to roof skin problems from mine to mine.Potential roof and rib skin problems can be time dependent as well. Some mines have roof skin rock, sometimes called draw rock, that falls when drilling the hole for the roof bolt as the initial roof support is installed. Some roof skins are more stable but can fail over time. The failure of roof skin can even be between properly installed roof bolts with roof plates (Figure 1).Mines have most commonly used a wire mesh that comes in individual panels anywhere from 5 ft x 5 ft (1.5 m x 1.5 m) all the way up to 5 ft x 16 ft (1.5 m x 4.9 m) in size. They are typically constructed of 8- or 9-gauge wire welded on a 4 in (102 mm) square pattern. A 5 ft x 16 ft (1.5 m x 4.9 m) panel weighs approximately 35 lbs (16 kg). These steel wire mesh panels can make it a difficult and sometimes dangerous task to deliver them from the surface to the roof bolter and then store on the machine. Manipulating the mesh panels from the storage area on the machine to the final installation position on the roof or rib can also be a daunting task (Figure 2)."

"INTRODUCTION The Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point (BCP) project, located in the north-east New Territories of Hong Kong, will form the seventh land crossing between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HK) and Shenzhen in China (Figure 1). The BCP project comprises an 11km long dual two-lane trunk road linking the border crossing facility to the existing road infrastructure in HK and when completed it will facilitate future regional development and alleviate frequent traffic congestion at the existing Boarder control points.In December 2013 Dragages Hong Kong (a member of the Bouygues Construction Group) was awarded the 5.4km long Contract 2 section of the project, including the 4.8km long Lung Shan Tunnels, by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Government of the HK SAR. To overcome the difficult ground conditions anticipated along the Contract 2 section of the project the tunnels will be constructed using mechanical and drill and blast (D&B) excavation techniques together with a 14.1m diameter multi-mode Earth Pressure Balance Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Land constraints imposed on the project alignment require that the final 500m section at the northern end of the Lung Shan tunnels, under Princess Hill (Figure 2), takes an almost 90 degree turn towards the north. The resulting 354m radius curve restricts the sight-line of road users to below the minimum 110m at 80km/hr hence, the internal span of the tunnels needs to be increased from 12.6m, in the standard straight section, to 15.4m in this curved section to accommodate a widened shoulder which will provide the required sight-line distance."

"The standard method of separation using flotation is compromised in terms of kinetics and efficiency, because of the generally slow separating differentials of fine bubbles and fine particle suspensions. A new flotation system has been developed that addresses these issues and imparts other benefits. The new technology is based on established pneumatic flotation designs called Imhoflot which use intensive in-line pre-aeration to aerate the flotation pulp prior to its introduction to the separating cell. Consequently the cell is designed only for the separation of the phases and not for bubble-particle contact. In the new system this separation is speeded up dramatically by the introduction of centrifugal motivation in the separating vessel, without the use of internal moving parts. The design focuses on providing increased differential forces on buoyant mineralised bubbles and hydrophilic fines. The observed result of these differential forces is the improvement of concentrate qualities by the reduction of the amount of misplaced material found in the froth. The commercial benefit to industry is much reduced residence time, less than 30 seconds, which offers considerable cost savings in equipment and infrastructure.Prototypes of 0.65m, 1.7m and 2.2m cell diameter size have been constructed for hydrodynamic and industrial scale tests to assess the previously established computational methods for scale up of the process. The 1.7m cell has been installed and operated for cleaning of potash concentrates in Germany, at throughputs of 150 m3/hr, with extremely encouraging results. A 2.2m cell has been installed and operated in plant trials for superfine coal in South Africa. Results are presented that illustrate the effects of differential separations by comparison with conventional pneumatic and mechanical flotation techniques. Predictions of performance are provided in the contexts of the applications tested."

[Full-scale laboratory experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of ventilation and water spray pressure on the potential dust capture efficiency of a ventilation system comprised of blowing ventilation and an underboon scrubber. The tests were performed for a 1.52-m (5-ft) roof height and 2.36 m-3/s (5000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume, and a 2.44-m (8-ft) roof height and 4.72 m3/s (10.000 cfm) blowing ventilation volume at three face positions of the miner. The scrubber suction rate was varied for the tests to study the effect of scrubber flow rate on capture efficiency. The airflow patterns and scrubber efficiency were determined by performing tracer gas tests. Tracer gas was released through a manifold placed in front of the rotating miner drum. The gas was sampled in a grid fashion using a real-time multi-point gas sampling system. The capture efficiency of the scrubber was evaluated based an the peak gas concentration of the gas laden air drawn through the scrubber and the amount of gas passing, through the scrubber as a fraction of the gas released at the face. The data were analyzed to yield scrubber peak concentrations, potential exposures at various operator locations and the gas removal percentage (GRP). The underboom scrubber appears to work best in the end sump position, relative to the start sump and start slab positions. The capture efficiency scrubber was higher for 2.44-m (8-ft) roof heights compared to 1.52-m (5-ft) roof heights. The data also showed that the scrubber air discharged behind the mining machine may be drawn into the face area by the action of the blowing ventilation system, resulting in recirculation.]
