Batu Hijau is a new copper and gold mine located on the island of Sumbawa in the Republic of Indonesia. This paper details the design and construction of the Batu Hijau overland conveyor, one of the most challenging efforts of the project. The 1.8 m wide, 5.6 km long conveyor has a design capacity of over 10,000 mtph and carries primary crushed ore through the steep mountains of Sumbawa, which necessitated a 160 m vertical downhill section, a 75 m vertical uphill section, ten vertical curves and one horizontal curve.

Completion of 18 churn-drill holes totaling 2,218 feet and 3 diamond-drill holes aggregating 421.5 feet of drilling in the M.C. mine area, near Truman, Wis., provided information indicating the existence and trend of a zone of zinc mineralization extending for 1,000 feet west of the old M. C. shaft.

The Cuajone and Toquepala copper projects are located in the extreme southern area of Peru. Since 1960, Southern Peru Copper Company has operated the Toquepala open -pit mine, flotation mill, 110 smelter, townsites, power plants, and railroad. Toquepala and 10, the smelter and port location, are connected by a 110-mile-long (176 lun) railroad. Much of Toquepala's infrastructure has been used for the Cuajone project. Cuajone, at an elevation of 11,400 ft (3475 m), required five standard-guage railroad tunnels with a combined length of 17 miles (27.2 km) to connect with Toquepala so concentrates could be shipped to the no smelter. The total cost of Cuajone is estimated at $726 million for a designed annual capacity of 180,000 tons of copper, equivalent to about $4,000 per ton of installed production capacity. This relatively low cost per ton, by today's standards, has been made possible through the use of the 110-to Toquepala railroad, the ability to expand the 110 copper smelter, and other favorable factors. To mine the 468 million tons of copper sulfide or e at a grade of 1.0% copper, approximately 24 1 million tons of waste were stripped- before mining of ore to supply the new Botiflaca 45, 000 ton per day concentrator. The mining rate must exceed 300,000 tons of waste plus ore per day to maintain the 45, 0 00 tpd sulfide ore milling rate which was to be reached at the end of 1976. Waste stripping is done with 15 cu yd electric shovels and 120 -ton trucks. Ore mining is done with 8 and 9 yd shovels. A railroad connects the pit with the 60 in. by 89 in. Allis-Chalmers gyratory crusher. Side-dump railroad cars of 50.cu yd capacity dump onto a 0 16 ft 9 in. long (5. 1 m) grizzly inclined at 40º with 7 to 8 in. (178 to 203 rnrn) bar spacings. The grizzly is divided into two 22 ft 4 in. (6.8 m) wide sections and two side -dump railroad cars discharge simultaneously into the 150-ton capacity dump pocket. A Barco rock manipulator is used for breaking or removing oversize from the dump pocket. The bin receiving the grizzly undersize has a capacity of 5,000 tons, and the pocket beneath the crusher holds 900 tons. Each is equipped with an 84 in. apron feeder, which feeds a 60 in. (1.52 m) conveyor belt to the 150,000 ton coarse ore stockpile, where the ore is distributed by a 72 in. (1. 83 m) tripper conveyor. A brief description of this installation was included in a recent paper by H. Kenyon Burch.l The purpose of the present paper is to amplify Mr. Burch's description, as it is felt by the writer that the subject merits more than passing attention. In making a comparison between the common method of hoisting men in mine shafts, and elevator practice in high buildings, the former shows to great disadvantage both as regards safety measures and smoothness of operation. It is surprising that in view of the inducements offered, the step of applying the building equipment direct to the mine shaft has not been taken before, as in many respects the conditions of service are similar, and the objects to be attained are identical. Even without doing this, it is certain that safety to life and limb in the usual method of hoisting men underground can be greatly enhanced by the application to the mine hoist of some of the features of the building elevator. In the case under consideration, the elevator cage runs in a vertical, concrete-lined shaft compartment 5 ft. 11 in. by 5 ft. 6 in. (1.8 by 1.68 m.) in section and 585 ft. (178 m.) deep, while the counterweight runs in the pipe and ladder compartment of a twin shaft 102 ft. (31 m.) distant. The section of the division of this compartment occupied by the counterweight measures 2 ft. 4 1/4 in. by 3 ft. 101/2 in. (0.72 by 1.18 m.), and the counterweight is made in the form of a small cage which suffices to carry two men for the purpose of making inspections or repairs in the pipe and ladder way. The hoist is designed to carry a load of 7500 lb. (3401.94 kg.), ex-clusive of the cage, which weighs 7500 lb., at a maximum speed of 800 ft. (243 m.) per minute. It is installed in the main hoist and compressor building about 220 ft. away from the elevator shaft and is driven by a 160-hp. direct-current motor which is served by a 190-hp. motor generator set. A small direct-current generator mounted at the end of the motor generator set furnishes the current for the controller magnets, brake and fields of the hoist motor and generator. The deep sea hydrothermal deposits are one of the most prospecting resources, and various works to develop these mines are now underway. There are also various methods for the pre-site survey of the mines: acoustic survey, electro-magnetic survey, and others. However, as a precise method at the final survey, drilling/coring is indispensable to confirm the three-dimensional distribution and to grasp the dignity of the ores for the final decision of industrialization. This drilling/coring at the final survey is done at many points with distance of 15~25m between each point for on-land deposits. This means that 1km by 1km square area requires (1,000m/25m)2 ~ (1,000m/15m)2 = 1,600 ~ 4,500 holes. The drilling/coring depths will be around 30m or more for the hydrothermal deposits. This depth seems very shallow, but because the stratum is very brittle and is very difficult to core, the average core recovery ratio is around 50%, and 0% core recovery happens very often. Thus, the indispensable work of coring for grasping the dignity of ores is a very difficult work although the coring depth is shallow, and also the required number of holes is enormous. Conventional drilling/coring method on the ocean is to use drillship. However, the cost is very huge. Recently a new technique has come out which is to use remotely controlled drilling machine on seafloor. This machine seems to have a very good performance. However, it is reported that the available inclination of the seafloor where the machine sits on must be less than 15 degrees. The sea floor inclinations of active hydrothermal vents area are usually very steep and slopes of 45 degrees or more are prevailing and it seems very hard to carry out drilling/coring for the machine at these steep slopes, although it is impossible to mine the ore at these areas because the temperature is too high to work there. The inclination of the sea floor at the dead or paused hydrothermal vents area where ore recovery is possible may be not so steep, and the machine may work well. However, the required number of holes is still a very heavy burden. In order to solve these problems, the author proposes a new concept of drilling/coring system operated from a conventional research ship. This concept is still a desk plan, but the author wants to realize this system at any means.

THE fact that granite has been encountered by the drill by those in search of oil and gas in Kansas is becoming more and more a matter of interest, not only to the oil producer but to everyone directly and- indirectly connected with the oil business. It is, therefore, time that someone should offer an explanation for its presence and form a definite opinion based on all the data available in regard to the effect it will have on the future prospects of the area affected as probable oil- and gas-producing territory. At present there seems to be no consensus of opinion. To the writer's knowledge, only one attempt has been made to explain; by Erasmus Haworth, State Geologist of Kansas, in a paper entitled Bulletin, Number Two on Crystalline Rocks in Kansas. The purpose of the present paper is to offer a theory for the presence of the granite and to draw conclusions which will aid in determining the prospective oil and gas value of the area in question. In taking up this question it will be well to consider first the tests in which granite has been reported, with a general history of each. The accompanying map (Fig. 1) shows the location of all wells described. The first well in which granite was reported was that drilled just south of Zeandale in section 27, township 10 south, range 9 east, by a local company which had taken up a block of leases in that vicinity. At a depth of 958 ft. (291.99 m.) granite was encountered. Drilling was continued to a depth of 1,093 ft. (333 m.) in the same formation, at which depth the hole was abandoned. Another well was started 1 mile east of the first well and the same rock was found at a depth of 945 ft. (288 m.). Drilling was continued to a depth of 1,200 ft. (365.76 m.) with the bit in the sane formation. Samples of the drill cuttings have been examined and they are undoubtedly crushed granite. The next well in which granite was found was that drilled by DeLaat and Shepard, independent wildcat operators, in section 34, township 19 south,. range 7 east, near the town of Elmdale. Granite was struck at 1,707 ft. (520 m.) and the hole was abandoned in the same formation at 2,525 ft. (769 m.). "In 2011, a site study indicated that the application of Honeywell’s Multivariable Predictive Control Technology (MPC) to the Goldex processing facility would provide significant opportunities for improvement. Grinding MPC was implemented in the SAG Mill in June 2015. This pilot application, called Phase 1, featured one of the first Multivariable Predictive Controllers to be installed in a Canadian mineral processing plant. Since the implementation of MPC, gold recovery from the gravity circuit has increased. MPC contributed to a decrease in flotation feed particle size (120 to 112 µm) and an increase in the SAG feed tonnage (8.5% increase). MPC also increased and stabilized the % solids of the SAG feed, which can have an impact on cost reduction (mechanical maintenance). Additionally, MPC increased productivity, providing grinding operators with more time to perform other tasks. Further anticipated benefits include the standardization of the grinding circuit operation from one team to the next, thereby minimizing circuit disturbances resulting from different operating philosophies. This paper will discuss the advanced control project development and justification, the technology and rapid implementation process, the performance results and the benefits obtained.IntroductionGoldex is an underground mine located near Val-d’Or that is owned and operated by Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM). Between 2008 and 2011, mining focused on the Goldex Extension Zone (GEZ). In 2011, the project was halted due to geotechnical problems; operations ceased until late 2013. Goldex operations resumed in September 2013 with the M and E zones, for which there were 0.7M gold ounces of proven and probable reserves, 2.1M ounces of measured and indicated resources and 1.2M ounces of inferred resources, totalizing 4M ounces. Life expectancy was extended until 2024."

Although two-entry yield pillar-based gate roads supported by wooden cribs have been commonly used throughout longwalling in the Wasatch PlateadRoan Cliffs coalfield of central Utah, a three-entry yield-abutment gate road configuration was recently trialed in the Hiawatha Seam at the Genwal Resources (GRI) Crandall Canyon No. 1 Mine, near Huntington, UT. Pillar, entry, and cable bolt performance were monitored through second panel mining using a fairly extensive array of geomechanical instruments installed over a span of four crosscuts. Ground pressure and entry closure measurements confirmed that the 9.1-m-wide (30-ft) yield pillar was partially shielded from first panel longwall loads by the 36.6-m-wide (120-ft) abutment pillar, and consequently, experienced only minor yielding until the approach of the second panel face. Complete yielding of the 9. I-m-wide (30-ft) pillar occurred when the second panel was approximately 6.1 m (20 ft) inby the instrumentation site. Average cable bolt loads and differential roof sag remained low through second panel mining and tailgate entry ground conditions were excellent; however, very high ground pressures in the abutment and yield pillars, and second panel rib strongly suggest a high potential for coal bumps utilizing this gate road configuration at mining cover depths in excess of 396 to 457 m (1300 to 1500 ft). This conclusion is supported by the suspected occurrence of small coal bumps along the abutment pillar ribs, observed indirectly as fresh debris in the middle entry just behind the second face. This paper presents a case history developed from the geotechnical measurements and on-site observations of this unique application of a yield-abutment gate road configuration and cable support system in the Hiawatha Seam.

Though the first patent on a bucket wheel excavator was granted in 1881 in the U.S. this technology was developed in Germany to the high standards of today. However, this development was only possible in parallel with the development of shiftable belt conveyors and boom stackers. The combination of these three types of equipment in the open pits of the Federal Republic of Germany has made lignite the cheapest energy source for power generating, despite the low heating value of German lignite in the order of 8500 kJ/kg (3600 BTU/lb) only. Comparing the costs for fuels used in power generating on the basis of their heating value, the relation between lignite, high quality black coal, and imported crude oil is in the order of 1 to 1.5 to 2.5, hence highly in favour of lignite. These cost advantages for lignite in Germany are due mainly to the concentration of lignite mining in a few high-output open pit mines. The largest one, Fortuna Mine in the Cologne district, produced a, total of 45 000 000 t lignite in 1976. That equals the annual fuel need of a 5750 MW power plant running 7000 hours per year at full capacity. Altogether 95 200 000 bank m3 equal to 200 000 000 t overburden had to be removed to accomplish this lignite output. The largest BWE (Fig. 1) ever built is working in the Fortuna Mine, too. At a digging height of 51 m above crawler level, the total vertical reach in relation to the face conveyor level is 98 m by means of its conveying bridge and loading unit. The hourly output is 10 400 bank m3. Its weight in operation is 13 000 t, its wheel diameter 21.6 m, as high as a 7-storey building.

Poland lies at the junction of three geologic provinces: the East European Precambrian platform, the Middle European Paleozoic platform, and the Alpine orogenic belt comprising the Carpathian Mountains. However most of the rocks that contain mineral deposits and many of the recently explored and mined deposits are commonly hidden under thick overburden, sometimes up to over 500 m thick. The discovery of these mineral deposits was due to the combination of geologists talents for inference and the keen interpretation of geophysical data ultimately tested by drilling. Examples of such use of the state-of-the-art geology include the following: 1. Sedimentologic and paleogeographic reconstructions led to the discovery of 8.8 Gt of bituminous coal under 500 m of Jurassic and Cretaceous cover in the Lublin basin, 2. Tectonic and paleogeografic data suggested a potential for discovery of burried Upper Permian copper de-posits on the Foresudetic monocline; subsequent exploration discovered 75 Mt of copper and 0,17 Mt of silver, 3. Geological interpretation of gravity and magnetic da-ta combined with sedimentologic data and regional subsur-face geology resulted in the location of 1.3 Gt of Fe-Ti-V ore in the Precambrian basement of northeastern Poland under -500 m of cover 4. A combination of metallogenic theory and geological interpretation of regional geophysical mapping led to the discovery of Caledonian-Hercynian granites and grano-diorites with accompanying porphyry-type Mo-W-Cu ores below 300 m cover on the northeastern border of the Upper Silesian coal basin 5. Tectonic reconstructions based on gravity and seismic data combined with theory on the origin of native sulfur led to the discovery of 1.0 Gt of native sulfur under cover up to 300 m thick. Five deposits were found at the northern margin of the Carpathian Foredeep. The other deposits found include lignite, polyhalite, lead-zinc ores.

The Koidu Kimberlite Project is situated in the Kono District of Sierra Leone, approximately 330 km east of the capital city, Freetown. The mining lease area is 4 km2 and comprises 2 kimberlite pipes, 4 dyke zones and a number of blows off the dykes. Koidu Holdings established on the property and began dewatering and the removal of silt from the existing 30 m excavation of the No.1 Pipe in 2003. While the original planning for the pipes included conventional open pit operations, mitigating factors such as the proximity of the town, the presence of houses close to the perimeter of the pipe, the size of the pipe and the planned open pit depth with relevant stripping ratios, as well as uncertainties on the grades in respect of an underground operation, lent itself to the vertical pit concept. The vertical pit was established using an A-frame headgear for the hoisting arrangement, with sidewall support comprising a combination of 20 m and 40 m long cable anchors, rock bolts, wire mesh and pneumatically applied concrete. The pit reached steady state production in January 2007 and produced some 26,000 tonnes of head feed per month until August 2007 when mining reached a depth of 74 m below the pit collar (approximately 126 m below surface). Mining was suspended following a sidewall failure that disrupted operations. Now that the grades in No.1 Pipe have been validated, focus has been switched to an underground operation taking account of both No. 1 Pipe and No. 2 Pipe. While the mining costs for the vertical pit have been higher than for a conventional open pit, the concept did circumvent the social implications, the issue of grade consistency and diamond value at depth, as well as providing the time frame to carry out a full underground mining study.

The Pyhäsalmi mine of the Outokumpu Co. is located in central Finland (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in the autumn of 1958. Construction of the mine was started a year later, and production began on Mar. 1, 1962 (Fig. 2). At present, 750,000 metric tons (mt) of ore and a nearly equal amount of country rock are mined annually. Slightly over one-half million tons of various concentrates are produced per year, of which 85% is pyrite concentrate, 10% zinc concentrate, and 5% copper concentrate. The pyrite concentrate is treated in the company's pyrite smelter,1 yielding elementary sulfur, sulfur dioxide, and iron-oxide cinders, as well as electric power. Thus all the sulfides, totaling 75% of the ore, are of economic value. This is a fact which had a bearing on the development of the stoping method. GEOLOGY The ore is of breccia type containing fragments of country rock of varying sizes. It is coarse-grained pyrite ore containing sphalerite and chalcopyrite as a matrix between the pyrite grains. Only small amounts of pyrrhotite have been observed in certain marginal parts of the orebody. The ore averages 0.85% Cu, 3.0% Zn, 38% S, and 33% Fe. The orebody extends from the surface down to at least 500 m, which is the lowest level from which present information has been obtained. Horizontally, the orebody is 650 m long. It is 75 m wide at its central part, narrowing towards the ends (Fig. 3). At a depth of 115 m, the orebody suddenly narrows down to a thickness of 25 to 30 m. In the northern part of the orebody, the dip is 50° to 70°, but elsewhere it is almost vertical (Fig. 3).

The gold-scheelite-quartz lodes of the Wakamarina valley were the most productive of the mesothermal gold-bearing areas in the Marlborough Schist. Most of the production came from the Empire City and Golden Bar mines which worked the Golden Bar lode. Only 134 m of its 1800 m strike length are accessible, in the No.2 level of the Golden Bar Mine. A fault has downthrown the Golden Bar Mine section by = 47 m and displaced it left-laterally by 18 m. The lode is a typical ribbon-banded mesothermal vein, averaging c. 1.75 m wide, and enclosing narrow horses of schist country rock. It is composed of bands of milky æbuckÆ quartz with thin laminae of schist. Scheelite occurs in short strings of grains within quartz on the footwall side of the lode and also in small quartz-carbonate veinlets in the foot wall and hanging wall schist. The lode quartz contains only localised traces of pyrite and arsenopyrite. They are more abundant in the wall-rock schist.   The Golden Bar lode lies within a steeply dipping normal fault, which, on its footwall side, is adjacent to a 40 m-wide, shallow-dipping mylonite shear zone. Within 1 m of the lode, the shear foliation has been dragged down to nearly parallel the lode footwall. Wall rock alteration is manifested by a marked increase in K and Rb, which correlate with abundant illite/muscovite and K-feldspar within 2 m of the footwall of the lode. Amphibole, stilpnomelane, and pumpellyite show a progressive decrease towards the lode. As and Sb increase close to the lode, but are at background levels within the lode itself. Enhanced Cr (150-430 ppm) in the quartz, relative to the schists (~40 ppm), suggests that the source hydrothermal fluids passed through and leached mafic rocks, such as the metabasites from the hanging wall of the lode (~400 ppm Cr).

The Norwegian Lake Tap Method was successfully used to tap into the side of Lake Dorothy 36.5 m (120') below the lake surface. The lake tap allows water to flowinto an access tunnel from the lake lowering the water elevation below its natural out-fall. When the lake reaches a predetermined elevation below the outfall, a 1.5 m (60?) valve in the tunnel will be shut and discharge from Lake Dorothy will stop temporarily allowing construction of a dam located 2.9 km (1.8 miles) downstream at Bart Lake. The lake tap and tunnel were one phase of the $64 million Lake Dorothy Hydroelectric Project, owned and operated by Alaska Electric Light & Power Company (AEL&P), a private utility located in Juneau, AK. The Lake Dorothy portal site and tunnel are located approximately 25.7 km (16 miles) southeast of Juneau, AK, in the remote Tongass National Forest at an elevation of 701 m (2,300') above sea level in the mountains above the Taku Inlet. Thirty degree snow covered mountainsides and limited access by helicopter were just two of the many factors which challenged this unique project. The lake tap and tunnel development consisted of 250 m (820') of horizontal tun-nel, averaging 3.6 m x 3.6 m (12' × 12'), excavated using conventional drill and blast methods in highly competent Granodiorite and Tonalite rock, placement of one 3.9 m (13') long concrete plug, or bulkhead, located at the tunnel midpoint, and one 3 m (10') diameter lake tap into the side of Lake Dorothy. This paper will provide an analysis of the logistical and engineering challenges involved in the development of one of only a handful of lake taps in North America. AEL&P and contractor J. S. Redpath Corporation worked together to complete this critical project phase safely and on schedule, in a location accessible only by helicopter and plagued by constantly changing, harsh weather conditions. A strict schedule had to be maintained to ensure the timely operation of the downstream dam and power plant.

"The Regional Connector project is a complex subway light-rail project that runs through the heart of downtown Los Angeles, CA. The design-build contract was awarded in April 2014 to the Regional Connector Constructors (RCC), a joint venture between Skanska USA Civil West California District Inc. and Traylor Brothers Inc., and their designer team consisting of Hatch Mott McDonald (HMM) and subconsultants. The project broke ground on Sept. 30, 2014 and is expected to be completed in winter 2021-2022. The main components of the project consist of 6.4-m (21-ft) diameter twin-bored tunnels, three crosspassages, a 87-m (287-ft) long crossover SEM cavern, three new underground stations, and cut-and-cover tunnels along South Flower, Alameda and 1st Streets. The project map is shown in Fig. 1. The design and construction challenges associated with each of these main components are discussed in the following sections.Project designTunnels. The Regional Connector tunnels are located primarily within the Fernando formation consisting predominantly of extremely weak to very weak, massive, clayey siltstone. About 305 m (1,000 ft) of tunnels on the eastern end are in alluvium and mixed face of Fernando formation and alluvium. The tightest curve of the tunnel alignment is 178 m (583 ft) in radius. The tunnels were designed with a reinforced precast concrete tunnel lining (PCTL) to be used with an earth balance pressurized (EPB) tunnel boring machine. The PCTL ring is 5.5 m (18 ft-10 in.) inside diameter, 27 cm (10.5 ft) thick, 1.5 m (5 ft) long, and consists of five segments and a key. The segments were designed with 6,500 psi concrete, 80 ksi yield strength wire rebar, convex joint surfaces to enhance seismic performance, and a dosage of 1.7 lbs polypropylene microfibers per cubic yard of concrete for fire resistance. The rings are designed with a right ring and left ring pattern and a taper of 3.8 cm (1.5 ft) to allow for alignment curve negotiation. Figure 2 shows typical sections of the PCTL. The structural lining design was modeled using FLAC 3D. Four consecutive rings were modeled with 32 dowel connection. Loading considered in the lining design includes temporary ground load during excavation, long-term ground loads, seismic loads and train loads. The seismic loads on the PCTL were simulated with the racking deformation applied at vertical boundaries of the model. Due to variation of geologic condition along the tunnel alignment and different surcharge requirements, three different types of reinforcement (typical, heavy and extra heavy) were designed. The typical type PCTL was required in Fernando formation, the heavy type was required in alluvium or mixed-face condition, and the extra heavy type was required in alluvium and underneath the Japanese Village Plaza where a surcharge of 1,000 psf was required."

Repeated exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of vibrating hand tools can result in the development of the disorder known as hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS; (1,3)). One of the hallmark symptoms of HAVS is cold-induced peripheral vasospasms that result in finger blanching (4). Although the vascular and neural pathology associated with vasospasms has been described, little is known about cellular mechanisms leading to this damage (4). To understand how vibration may alter vascular and neural physiology and anatomy, rats were exposed to a single bout of tail vibration and the molecular responses of neural and vascular tissues were measured to determine if there are immediate or sustained affects of vibration that may underlie longer term changes in physiology. Methods Experiment 1. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n = 32, 6 weeks of age) were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities. All procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guidelines for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in Broome-style restrainers, and securing their tails to a vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control rats were treated in the same manner, except that the tail platform was mounted on isolation blocks and not on a shaker. The vibration exposure was 125 Hz, 49 m/s2, for 4 h. Rats were euthanized with an overdose of pentobarbital (100 mg/kg) 1 h or 24 hours after the exposure. RTqPCR was used to measure transcript levels for endothelin 1 (ET-1), the 3 forms of nitric oxide synthetase (NOS) NOS-1, NOS-2, NOS-3 and norepinephrine receptor subtypes 1D, 2A, 2C, in artery tissue, and to measure calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and nitric oxide synthase-1 (NOS-1) in ventral nerves. Data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVAs. Experiment 2. Male Sprague Dawley rats (n =24, 6 weeks of age) were maintained as described above. Animals were exposed to a single bout of restraint or vibration. Another group of animals served as cage controls. All animals were euthanized 24 h after the exposure, and tail arteries were isolated and frozen. Reactive oxygen species ROS) were measured using electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). Arteries were homogenized over ice in 1 ml of PBS with protease inhibitor cocktail, using a tissue tearer (Biospecs Products Inc. Racine, WI USA). The sample was split into two 0.5 ml samples. One set had PBS and the spin label hydroxyl-TEMPO [0.1 mM] added while the other set had hydroxyl-TEMPO [1.0 mM] plus the specific hydroxyl radical scavenger, dimethylthiourea (DMTU), added to confirm the presence of the hydroxyl radical. Samples were vortexed and then placed in a flat cell for ESR analysis. The ESR spectrometer settings were: receiver gain, 6.32 x 102; time constant, 0.02 s; modulation amplitude, 1.0 G; scan time, 20 sec; magnetic field, 3490 ± 100 G (2). Data were analyzed using 1-way ANOVAs.

About 65% of the U.S. coal production (835 n tons was surface mined. A similar proportion of the Illinois basin's production (112 m tons) is also surface mined. The state of Illinois is the third largest producer of surface mined coal in the United States, after Wyoming and Kentucky. The Illinois coal basin encompasses Illinois, southwestern Indiana, and western Kentucky, as shown in Figure 1 (dotted lines). The estimated surface mineable coal resources in the basin amount to about 27 billion tons, and about 69 m. tons of coal is surface mined annually (Tab1e I).

The Spitzenberg Tunnel is a 600 m (1,970 ft) long twin tube motorway tunnel on Germany’s Autobahn A44 between Kassel and Eisenach. Since flexibility was considered to be very important in the continuously changing geological conditions, NATM was chosen as the construction method. When passing an old quarry with only 1,80 m (6 ft) of overburden, the excavation works became extraordinarily challenging. This paper not only describes the special methods, like double sidewall drifts and pipe umbrellas applied in this zone but also highlights the cooperation between the parties involved, which in combination made the project a joint success.

In 1980 the Bureau of Mines developed the Mine Inspection Data Analysis System (MIDAS). MIDAS is a computerized, industrial hygiene data base capable of statistically analyzing environmental data collected in coal and noncoal mines and mills by Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) inspectors or mine operators. The objectives of this report are to describe the current contents of MIDAS, to report analyses of coal and noncoal mine respirable dust samples collected by MSHA inspectors and to evaluate the proposed change in the metal and nonmetal respirable dust standard from a formula based upon the percentage of quartz identified in the sample to 100 µg/m3 of respirable quartz. Based on samples collected by MSHA inspectors, changing the noncoal respirable dust standard would result in 4 pct fewer samples with dust concentrations exceeding the standard. Analysis of respirable coal dust data collected by MSHA inspectors showed that mines with longwall plows or shears had the highest geometric mean concentrations (1.64 and 1.29 mg/m3, respectively). Mine operations using continuous rippers out-numbered longwall mine operations about 10 to 1 and had a geometric mean concentration of 0.66 mg/m3.
