"This research determines shear strength and stiffness properties of bedding planes and joints in the roof strata rocks within 7.5 to 9 m (25-30 ft.) overlying the Illinois #6 coal seam (within the pressure arch zone). A shear test loading device was designed into a 1.334 kN (150 t) Forney Compression Loading Machine to perform direct shear tests in accordance with ASTM D5607-08 “Standard Test Method for Performing Laboratory Direct Shear Strength Tests of Rock Specimens under Constant Normal Force”. The data were used to determine peak and residual friction angles and the dilation angle. A total of 49 bedding plane samples were tested, out of which 46 (36 intact and 10 relatively weak and loose) samples passed QA/QC procedures in accordance to ASTM D5607. Samples from eight (8) different bedding planes- shale/limestone (SL), shale/sandstone (SSs), shale/bone (SB), laminated sandstone (LS), shale/shale (SS), bone/bone (BB), bone/limestone (BL), and limestone/limestone (LL) were tested. The number of samples tested for each bedding plane were: SL- 11, SSs- 8, SB- 5, BB- 4, LS- 6, SS- 9, BL- 1, and LL- 2. Peak and residual shear strength values at 2.75 MPa normal stress range 1.06 – 6.26 MPa and 0.82 MPa to 0.82 – 4.14 MPa, respectively. The average normal and shear stiffness values are about 11.98 GPa/m and 3.11 GPa/m. Dilation angles are low (<10?) and negative in some cases. Angle of sliding friction values range from 9? to 42?. Joint Roughness Coefficient (JRC) values were less than 10.INTRODUCTIONRock mass may be defined as the total in situ rock medium containing bedding planes, faults, joints, folds and other structural features. Therefore, it is discontinuous and may have heterogeneous and anisotropic engineering properties. Upon creation of an excavation in a rock mass, bedding planes and joints are the most likely points of failure initiation. The failure typically occurs either in tensile or shear mode. Upon failure initiation stresses are transferred to the neighboring rock mass and the failure progresses until stability is achieved through equilibrium of stresses and strength. An example of this mechanism is development of the pressure arch. This study determined the shear strength and stiffness properties in shear and compression of bedding planes and joints in the immediate roof strata rocks within 7.5-9 m ( 25-30 ft.) overlying the Illinois No. 6 coal seam (within the pressure arch zone). Since such data are currently not available for Illinois Coal Basin mines, researchers and engineers have been using estimated values for design purposes. The immediate roof lithology in the proposed mining area consists of shale 0.62 m; Bone 0.09 m (0.3 ft.); Limestone, 0.10 m (0.33 ft.); Shale 2.37 m (7.9 ft.); and sandstone 0.55 m (1.83 ft.). The bedding plane samples were provided by a mine in south-eastern Illinois operating at a depth of about 180 m (600 ft.)."

The specific surface area (Blain value) of iron ore concentrate entering the pelletizing plant is one of the characteristics most effective on the overall performance of the plant such as producing harder pellets, decreasing additives consumption, and decreasing energy consumption. Therefore, preparing the feed entering pelletizing plant is required. The iron concentrate entering Ardakan pelletizing plant located in Yazd province, Iran bears relatively low Blain value (approx. 1600 cm2/g) which necessitates one stage of regrinding so as to increase the Blain value to more than 1800 cm2/g. Studies were conducted and results showed that HPGR is the best regrinding equipment for increasing specific surface area. Conducting pilot plant tests on the concentrate sample revealed that specific throughput is 181 to 263 ts/hm3 and specific energy consumption is 1.6kWh to 2.2 kWh. Pilot tests also showed that one stage of grinding results in 407 cm2/g to 553 cm2/g increase in specific surface area. Based on these results, diameter of rolls, length of rolls, power consumption and grinding force were calculated to be 1.3 m, 0.9 m, 1276 kW and 13800 kN, respectively. Therefore, an HPGR with a roll diameter of 1.52 m, roll width of 1.1 m, power of 1660 kWh and a capacity of 500 t/h has been selected and implemented in Ardakan pelletizing plant. Industrial performance of HPGR and its effects on the plant study results show that limestone and bentonite consumption has reduced about 60% and 30%, respectively. Total Fe of the final pellet has increased from 65.5-65.7% to 66.2%. Cold compressive strength (CCS) and porosity of final pellets are approximately 292 kg/pl and 20.4, which are in the acceptable range.

The Bureau of Mines recorded and analyzed overpressure levels for three production blasts at the White Pine copper mine, Upper Michigan, to obtain representative data from single-heading blasts in a long, straight haulageway and to estimate the damage potential inherent in production blasts fired in close proximity to underground structures. Commercial pressure gages with a flat response to 1 kHz were used with an FM tape recorder to record the overpressures from one dynamite and two AN-FO (ammonium nitrate-fuel oil), 500-msec production blasts having zero-delay charge weights of about 75 lb (34 kg). The recorded waveforms from the underground blasts (1) were more complex than the typical free-air wave, (2) were of longer duration, and (3) had numerous secondary arrivals due to reflections from the ribs and roof. The waveforms showed that the zero-delay charges produced the only high overpressures. First pulse peak overpressures from the blasts ranged from 0.10 lb/in2 (6.9 X 102 N/m2) at a distance of 471.1 ft (144 m) to a maximum of 1.76 lb/in2 (121.3 X 102 N/m2) at 191,7 ft (58.4m) from the blasts. An analysis of variance of the first pulse overpressures from the three White Pine blasts showed that no statistically significant difference existed among the overpressure levels from the dynamite and AN-FO blasts and that a single equation P = 4.9 x 103 (D /W1 / 3) 2 .15, where P = overpressure in pounds/inch2, D = d-stance from the blast in feet, and W = zero-delay charge weight in pounds, could be used to describe the falloff of overpressure with distance.

Location Xiaolangdi is located in the Henan province of the People’s Republic of China. The distance between Xiaolangdi and the capital of Henan, Zhengzhou, is about200 km. The closest big city to Xiaolangdi is Luoyang (about 45 km). This city has about1 million inhabitants and is well known also to foreigners for its famous historical past. It has been the capital of China through 10 dynasties in former times. Overview The Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project is located at the last gorge of the middle reach of the Yellow River. The main purposes of the project are: -flood control, - ice jam control, - sediment control, - irrigation, - water supply, - hydroelectric power generation. The project consists of many structures, these are 10 intake towers, 9 flood &sediment tunnels, 6 power tunnels, 1 underground powerhouse, and 1 zone dearth and rockfill dam with a sloping impervious core, 154m high, with a crest length of 1317m. The powerhouse mainly features 6 turbine and generator units of 300 MW, totalling installed capacity of 1800 MW and annual energy output of5.1 GWH. The total storage capacity of the reservoir is 12.65 billion m³ of which 5.1billion m³ is live storage. Of the Yellow River drainage basin, 694,000 km2 or 92,3percent is located upstream of Xiaolangdi Dam Site. Xiaolangdi is located in a key position for flood and sediment control of the Yellow River. Upon completion, Xiaolangdi Dam and Reservoir will effectively mitigate catastrophic floods, the control level will be increased from the present less than 100-year return period up to 10,000 years. The Netherlands RandstadRail project makes use of a large range of sophisticated geotechnical techniques to allow a shield driven tunnel to approach the central station of Rotterdam. This paper describes the construction of three deep excavation pits constructed with 1.2 m and 1.5 m thick diaphragm walls. Besides the presentation of the actual diaphragm wall activities special consideration is given to the break-in and break-out situations of the TBM into the deep excavations pits using sealing blocks and partly glass fibre reinforcement in the diaphragm walls.

Keywords: extraction, lead refining, Pb-Tl solutions, PbCl2-TlCl solutions. The theoretical part of the paper presents an analysis of the conditions of Tl extraction from Pb using different extractants and determines the activity coefficients in liquid solutions of Pb-Tl and PbCl2-TlCl. The dependence of the solution activity coefficients upon the composition and temperature is presented in the form of Krupkowski and Krupkowski-Fitzner equations. An analysis and evaluation were made of the influence of the methods of PbCl2 introduction into a Pb-Tl solution upon the efficiency of the Tl extraction process under thermodynamic equilibrium conditions. The analysis made it possible to formulate relevant equations describing the dynamics of the process of Tl extraction from Pb under stirring conditions as well as under the extractant injection into the liquid Pb-Tl solution conditions. In the part concerning experimental work, results are given for tests on the Tl extraction process from Pb-Tl liquid solutions of initial Tl content of approximately 0.05% mass using PbCl2 or, alternatively, Cl2(g) conducted in laboratorial scale. The tests made it possible to establish the influence of time, temperature, mass and the method of introducing the extractants into the liquid upon the level of Tl extraction from a Pb-Tl solution. "Grout backfill strategy for a particular subsurface concrete tunnel (~4.9km long, 3.5m in diameter, carrying 20” gas pipeline) was based on achieving 1:100 slope of the fill in order to progressively fill the tunnel, in a series of 350m section. Grout rheology, particularly its non-Newtonian and thixotropic behavior, determines the final fill slope for given backfill strategy. The objective of this study was to simulate the two-phase grout mix backfill process using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and determine the slope of the fill to validate and optimize the backfill strategy. Three dimensional CFD study showed that for a 500m long tunnel section with a single injection point of grout, given its rheology, it will likely keep flowing without filling the 500m section height wise. Design optimization for filling was carried out using two dimensional studies to make the backfill process “slope independent” by incorporating a 2.5m high bulkhead at ~1,000m. INTRODUCTION As part of a gas field development a 20” onshore gas pipeline is required from the landfall site to the processing terminal some 8km inland. At the landfall site the gas pipeline is routed in a ~5km underground tunnel underneath a bay. For operational reasons and planning consents as well as to mitigate environmental impact based on an environmental impact study, once the gas pipeline and the associated services and spares have been installed, the subsurface gas tunnel will be fully grouted. There will be no permanent access to the tunnel after construction is completed and the site compounds have been reinstated once works are complete. One of the key requirements is that “full grouting of the tunnel” is desired. The grouting material used is a non-Newtonian and thixotropic fluid mixture of bentonite, cement, plasticizer, retarder/stabilizer and water. The tunnel is filled progressively in 350m sections using a combination of existing and new pipework assuming the grout rheology will yield a fill slope of 1:100 in a 350m section. The proposed grouting system used one pump at the grouting compound to pump the grout into the tunnel using the existing tunneling pipework. For the longer runs a second booster pump was used in series to pump the grout to its final discharge location. The filling process is controlled via a system of flow meters, pressure transmitters and a tunnel CCTV system."

The effects of alloy additions on the M, and A, temperatures of an Fe-22.5 pct Ni alloy have been determined. Increasing amounts of titanium, colum-bium, vanadium, and silicon raise and then lower M,while raising A, cmtinuously. Cobalt raises both M, and A,. Aluminum has little effect on Ms but raises A,. Chromium md nickel lower M, and A,. It is proposed that elements raise M, in accordance with their effect on the Ae3 temperature of iron until the lattice becomes stiffened against the shear transformation so that M, is then lowered. An anomaly, first pointed out by Zener,1 arises in steels when the addition of elements, such as molybdenum and tungsten, which raise the Ae3 temperature, also lower the M, temperature.2&apos;3 During the development of a series of martensitic precipitation-hardening (maraging) steels, the effect of several elements on the transformation of austenite to martensite was studied. The results show that under suitable conditions several elements which raise Ae3 also raise the M, and A, temperatures. PREPARATION OF MATERIALS STUDIED A series of alloys was made in which cobalt, titanium, columbium, vanadium, silicon, aluminum, molybdenum, chromium, and nickel were added to an iron base containing 22.5 pct Ni. The compositions of the alloys prepared are given in Table I. The residual manganese contents of the heats were in the range of 0.030 to 0.35 pct, silicon 0.05 to 0.1 pct, carbon 0.0008 to 0.009 pct, and nitrogen from 0 to 0.004 uct. The allois were made as 50-lb induction heats starting with electro-iron and electro-nickel, melted in air to oxidize impurities. Additions of silico-manganese and ferro-silicon were made after which the power was turned off to allow the products of deoxidation to rise and be skimmed from the surface of the melt. The furnace chamber was pumped down to a pressure of 5 p and the charge was heated to 2900°F for the addition of other alloying elements. The heats were poured into five 10-lb ingots, making successive alloy additions to each. The ingots were soaked for 2 hr at 2300°F and hot-worked to 3/4-in.-diam bars. "Abstract-The Voisey’s Bay Ni-Cu-Co deposit was discovered in late 1994 as the result of prospecting initiated in the summer of 1993. By July 1995, proven mineable reserves were 31.7 x 106 tonnes grading 2.83% Ni, 1.68% Cu and 0.12% Co, and current total resources in all categories are quoted to be in the order of 150 X 106 tonnes. The deposit is associated with a body of troctolite belonging to the Nain Anorthosite (1.35 Ga - 1.29 Ga) suite, which was emplaced across the boundary between the Proterozoic "Rae" Province to the west and Archean "Nain" Province to the east.The deposit can be described in terms of three geological settings. The "Ovoid" is a 600 m long by 350 m wide by 100 m deep lens of massive sulfide, covered by 10 m to 20 m of glacial overburden, and separated from the underlying country rock quartz-plagioclase-biotite gneiss by a breccia of gneissic fragments in troctolite known as the Basal Breccia Sequence. To the west of the Ovoid lies the "Western Extension", comprising disseminated and massive sulfides in a north-dipping sheet of troctolite which ranges from upper unmineralized troctolite down through troctolite with increasing amounts of sulfide (up to 50%), to massive sulfide (in some places only), and then to Basal Breccia Sequence. East of the Ovoid, the troctolite sheet broadens out into a troctolite intrusion, within which occurs the "Eastern Deeps", a zone of massive and disseminated sulfide up to 100 m thick that is currently being explored. The mineralization of the Eastern Deeps lies along the line of intersection of a feeder sheet with the base of the intrusion. The current interpretation is that the three geological environments represent different erosional levels through a single mineralized intrusion. In this model, the deepest erosional level lies to the west and exposes the feeder to surface, whereas the Ovoid represents the base of the intrusion at surface, and the Eastern Deeps the base of the intrusion overlain by 600 m to 900 m of troctolite. Sulfides and gneissic fragments were brought up by magma flowing quickly through the feeder, and settled out where the flow rate decreased as the sulfide-bearing magma mixed with magma already emplaced in the intrusive body."

The Bohai Oil Company has applied all together 11 jack-up oil drilling rigs (movable platforms) (1) which can be classified in terms of their forms of foundations into two types: the integ­ral mat and the column legged, as demonstrated in figure 1. Figure 1 a) indicates the entire structure of the sunk cushion type, i.e. the one with a box-like sunk cushion serving as its foundation by directly sitting on the sea bed. The length, width and height of the outer sides for the sunk cushion stand at 45.8 x 38.0 x 3.3m ( for Rig Bohai No.2 ) and 50.6 x 33.2 x 4.88m ( for Rig Bohai No.6 ), the relative areas of theirs being 1475m2 and 2008m2 respectively and both bigger than the plane areas of the rigs. With a view to realize a convenient drainage of mud while sinking, two holes of 14 x 14m and 32 x 18m in size are constructed in the center part of the sunk cushion. When work sets off, the underside of the sunk cushion operates as a foundation, the sunk cushion being connected to the platform by hull columns which transmit the load of the platform down­wards to the sunk cushion that passes it further onto the subgrade. [ ] Column legs for rigs may also be grouped into two categories considering their features: columns with and without boots. The bodies of boot columns are made up of trusses, whose bottoms, are boot-shaped with a big diameter. The diameter of boot columns of the rigs applied by the Bohai Oil Company shows bigger and it may reach 12 or 18m. In the boot columns, the transmission of the platform&apos;s weight into soil is done by the underside areas of boots. While in the case of the vertical columns, which are of cylinder columns of steel with sealed bottom ends shaped inverted arch, the entire drilling platform is supported by the carrying force delivered by the bottoms of these steel cylinders and the frictional force rendered by their outside walls. Such a type of columns is featured by a small diameter, 3m in general. Figure 2 exhibits the schematic diagram of sections regarding the two types of column legs.

GC. Waterman Mr. Grieves&apos; paper on "Shaft Sinking Today--A Boring Business Tomorrow" in the Dec. 1981 issue of MINING ENGINEERING is an excellent description of recent improvements in speed and costs of shaft sinking. However, shaft boring techniques are not a recent development. In 1935-36, the Idaho Maryland Co. (gold), Grass Valley, CA, bored the vertical 1.5-m-diam Idaho No. 2 ventilation and supply shaft to a depth of 346 m. The equipment was designed and perfected by Branner Newsome and was, I believe, described in "Transactions." Pickands Mather later bored a 1.8-m-diam shaft to a depth of about 305 m using Newsome&apos;s design. The Idaho No. 2 shaft cut through hard gabbro, diabase dikes, soft serpentine, very incompetent ankeritized serpentine and a strong fault zone. The completed shaft did not require timber support; the fault zone was cemented. Equipment consisted of a rotating 1.5-m or 3-m core barrel with a slotted bottom which cut a 76-mm kerf. The cutting agent was chilled steel shot introduced into the slot as needed. The driving mechanism and core barrel were lowered into the shaft, the former secured to the wall and the inshaft "engineer" operated the motors which controlled core barrel rpm and advance. After an advance of 1.5-3 m the equipment was lifted out of the shaft, a half(?) stick of powder cut off the drilled core, and it was hoisted to the surface with a cable attached to an eye bolt at the tope of the core. A "shift" consisted of three men: hoistman, equipment operator (down the shaft), and a surface laborer. Advance was variable as equipment and techniques were perfected. Near the end of the job advance was, as I remember, 1.5-3 m per shift. Costs were, as I recall, about $115/m. Up to 4 m cores were lifted out in one piece and swung to the dump by a stiff leg derrick. The Newsome equipment was relatively inexpensive to build and operate and his method should be (more than?) competetive with the methods described by Grieves. W.E. Hawes The author, in mentioning the South African developments of the cactus grab, ignores the parallel development of the Cryderman mucker in this hemisphere. Perhaps a slightly longer history of blind hold drilling would have been in order. Blind shaft boring got a major boost at the Nevada Test Site, as part of the nuclear weapons development, when it was essential to be able to quickly assess depth for weapons testing. One of the early civilian attempts to utilize this technology occurred when Kerr McGee drilled the shaft at the Section 19 Mine at Ambrosia Lake, NM. This twin masted drill rig belonged to a subsidiary of Kerr McGee, not Shaft Drillers. This was a difficult hole, due to bentonitic shales that decomposed. Later advances in drilling fluids eliminated this problem. The Conoco project referred to is not entirely correct, and needs minor amplification: The depth of the development (not pilot) shaft drilled was 684 m, at a diameter of 3.05 m, with a 2.16 m ID hydratatic casing being installed to a depth of 669 m. Conoco Inc., not Challenger, executed the drilling, however Conoco did use Challenger Drilling Company&apos;s Rig 14-S. Rig 14-S is unique in that it is specifically designed for shaft drilling, rather than being an oil field rig used for this service. All work was planned and directed by Conoco personnel. Deviation of the aforementioned shaft from vertical was 31 cm. Two smaller shafts (pilot shafts) were drilled with the same rig. These smaller ones were drilled 1.8 m in diameter, to depth of 665 m and cased with .91-m-diam casing, to depth of 650 m to be used as pilot holes for 5.5 m diameter shafts. The total elapsed time for all drilling, casing, cementing, and rig moves was 50 weeks. The constraints mentioned of vertical accuracy, torque, wall collapse, rig set up time, lining time etc., pumping out, etc., may not be as serious as the author implies. First, vertical accuracy: The record achieved by Conoco indicates that with reasonable care, good accuracy can be obtained, primarily by having a fair amount of weight in tension, rather than on the drill bit. Second, the amount of torque that can be applied to the drill stem has been greatly increased by the introduction of larger diameter drill stems, such as the new Hughes rig uses. Third, risk of collapse of shaft walls is minimal with the proper mud program. Basically, the walls are supported by the weight of the mud and it is not removed until some type of casing is installed and grouted in. Here in the real challenge of blind drilling shafts to devise a more economical method of lining bored shafts than using steel casing. The remaining issues were minor at Conoco, provided adequate planning and scheduling takes place. An excellent paper, "Shaft Drilling--Crownpoint Project" by Hassell H. Hunter, presented at the Fifth Uranium Symposium in Albuquerque in Sept. 1981 contains details of this project. A combination of blind boring, with enlargement by either mechanical means (boring machine, or tunneling type shield) or slabbing down, with muck removal through a larger bored shaft would seem to be the future trend in shaft development. The economics, especially for wet conditions, favor this concept over conventional sinking, as has been demonstrated at Kerr McGee --Churchrock, UNC--Churchrock and Conoco at Crownpoint.

East Diamante is a submarine volcano in the southern Mariana arc that is a complex caldera about 10 km x 5 km (elongated ENE-WSW), and breached on its northern and southwestern sectors. A large field of barite-sulfide mounds was discovered in June 2009 and revisited in July 2010 aboard the R.V. Natsushima using the Hyper-dolphin ROV. The mound field occurs on the NE flank of a cluster of resurgent domes inside the caldera. The mound field extends for more than 100 m long and is about 30 m wide, and is aligned along a NE-SW rift valley. A sample of dacite yielded a 40Ar/39Ar age of 20,000±400 years. Individual mounds are typically 1-3 m tall and 0.5-2 m wide, with lengths from about 3 to more than 5 m. The mounds are composed of barite-dominant layers interbedded with Zn-sulfide-rich barite layers. Rare inactive spires and chimneys cap some mounds. Fe and Mn oxides are currently forming small (<1 m diameter, ~0.5 m tall) subsidiary mounds on the top of some of the sulfate/sulfide mounds and drape the flanks of others. Both diffuse- and focused-flow fluids emanate from the subsidiary oxide mounds. Ages of the basal sulfate/sulfide mounds cluster around 4,000 years old based on 226Ba/Ba, whereas the oxides are less than 5 years old based on 228Th/228Ra. Most mound and chimney samples are dominated by barite and amorphous silica; sulfides occur in variable amounts that in decreasing order of abundance include sphalerite, galena, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Anglesite, cerrusite, and a Pb phosphate occur as late-stage interstitial phases. Some mound samples have fragmental textures; layered clasts composed of chalcopyrite and pyrite may have been derived from collapsed chimneys. Despite the abundance of barite, samples contain high concentrations of Zn (to 23 Wt.%), Pb (to 13 wt.%), Ag (to 500 ppm), and Au (to 15 ppm). Copper is enriched in a few mounds samples, up to 3 wt.%, but is typically <1 wt.%. Other significant metal enrichments include Sb (to 1320 ppm), Cd (to 1180 ppm), and Hg (to 55 ppm).

La zone 1 de la mine Doyon (zone altérée), se situe à l?extrémité sud de la mine et est constituée d?une série de veines étroites à fort pendage et ayant des épontes de très faible résistance. Les épontes supérieure et inférieure ont des valeurs de RQD variant de 0 à 20 lors que les valeurs de RQD de la zone minéralisée se situent entre 20 et 40. Le minerai de la zone 1 s?étend sur environ 300 m de long et sur 900 m de profondeur avec des épaisseurs variant entre 2 et 15 m. Des méthodes de minage long-trous y sont utilisées avec des accès longitudinaux ou transverses selon l?épaisseur de la zone minéralisée. L?exploitation de la zone 1 a débuté en 1991 et plus de 1,7 millions de tonnes auront été extraites à la fin 2008. Plusieurs techniques y ont été testées que ce soit au niveau du développement ou du minage afin d?améliorer la sécurité des travailleurs, de réduire la dilution des chantiers et d?en augmenter la récupération. Différentes modifications ont été apportées aux dimensions et orientations des galeries, aux patrons de forage, aux techniques de sautages, au support de terrain, à la séquence de minage et aux méthodes de remblayage. Nonoxide ceramic materials could substitute for high-temperature alloy steels containing imported critical and strategic materials such as cobalt, chromium, and nickel if their high-temperature properties can be improved. An important result of this substitution would be a reduction of the Nation&apos;s need for imports of critical and strategic materials. In this Bureau of Mines investigation, the primary objective was to produce high-purity u1trafine (particles <5 ~m equivalent spherical diameter (ESD)) alpha-silicon carbide (a-SiC) powders with improved high-temperature properties using the Bureau&apos;s patented turbo-milling process. A secondary objective was to determine the feasibility of using polymer mill construction materials as a means of eliminating metal contamination from the turbomill. U1trafine a-SiC powders with BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Te11er) surface areas from 30 to 35 m2/g (~0.06 ~m particle ESD) were produced in an all-polymer turbomi11. These high-purity powders (with I-pct Band I-pct C additions) hot-pressed to greater than 99 pct of their optimal density and exhibited properties commensurate with those of commercially available a-SiC. The most promising of the construction materials tested for the major wear surfaces of the turbomi11 was u1trahigh-mo1ecu1ar-weight (UHMW) polyethylene, a polymer thermoplastic.

INTRODUCTION The Alchem trona mine, owned and operated by Allied Chemical Corp., is located approximately 32 km (20 miles) west of the town of Green River, and 8 km (5 miles) north of Interstate 80 in southwest Wyoming. Trona, a naturally occuring sodium sesquicarbonate (NaCO3 • NaHCO3 • 2H2O), is used for the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), commonly known as soda ash. Present annual US consumption of soda ash is approximately 9.07 Mt (10 million st), out of which approximately 7.3 Mt (8 million st) is produced from the Wyoming trona mines. About 44% of soda ash is consumed by the glass industry; 3 % by exports; and the remaining portion by paper, chemical, soap, textile, and nonferrous industries. Allied Chemical operates an underground mine at an average depth of about 488 m (1600 ft). There are three other trona mines in the area operated by FMC Corp., Stauffer Chemical Corp., and Texasgulf Inc. (see Fig. 1). Allied Chemical became interested in southwest Wyoming trona deposits in the early 1940s. Explora¬tion work was begun in 1959 with the acquisition of federal leases. Exploitation of the reserves began in 1968. Two shafts, one 6.1 m (20 ft) and another 3.7 m (12 ft), were completed prior to 1968. The 6.1-m (20-ft) diam service shaft is divided in half by a cur¬tain wall, with one half used for men and material and the other for ventilation as a return air shaft. During the period from 1968 to 1974, the 3.7-m (12-ft) shaft was used as production shaft with two 7.3-t (8-st) skips. Due to the increased demand for soda ash, plant and mine expansions were completed during 1974. Under this expansion, the material handling system capacity was increased by constructing a new 2721-t (3000-st) capacity ore bin, sinking a 6.1-m (20-ft) diam produc¬tion shaft, and installing a friction hoist with two 22.7-t (25-st) skips. The Alchem mine manpower is 484 employees and about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) of trona was produced during 1976. Three different mining systems are used at the Alchem mine: conventional, continuous, and longwall. Allied Chemical introduced its first longwall unit in 1973, which was also the first longwall system introduced in the Wyoming trona district. At present, four conventional, seven continuous, and two longwall units are in operation. This equipment is operated in ten production areas. GEOLOGY The bedded trona and trona-halite in the Green River basin of southwestern Wyoming is a major re¬source for the nation. There are 25 beds that exceed 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and underlie areas of about 2590 km2 (1000 sq miles). There are other minor beds that range in thickness from 0.3 to 1.2 m (1 to 4 ft). Allied Chemical&apos;s Alchem mine is located in bed 17. The trona bed numbering system starts at the lowest elevation and increases upwards. The trona beds are in the Wilkens Peak member of the Green River formation. The Green River formation was deposited in a lake that began in early Eocene as a large body of fresh water, shrank in size and became saline, and then became fresh water again. The sedi¬ment during the saline phase of the lake, which includes the trona beds, is called the Wilkens Peak member. The underlying freshwater lake deposit is called the Tipton member and includes a 25.9-m (85-ft) sand unit which is a high pressure, low permeability aquifer. The over¬lying sediment is called the Laney shale. The Green River formation is underlaid by the Wasatch formation and overlaid by the Bridger formation (see Fig. 2). The structure of the beds in the area of the Allied Chemical mine is mostly postdepositional asymmetrical folds of small amplitude. These folds range in size of 3 to 6.1 m (10 to 20 ft) to as much as 45.7 m (150 ft). The trend of the folds is northwesterly with the north¬east flank of the anticlines having a steep dip and the southwest having gentle dips. Trona bed 17 varies in thickness from 2.4 to 3.4 m (8 to 11 ft) over the 93.2 km2 (36 sq miles) holdings of Allied Chemical and is flat lying except for the rela¬tively minor folding and a negligible regional dip of about 0.017 rad (1°). Trona occurs naturally in several physical forms in the Green River basin, being both massive and crystal¬line. With current modern and future trend of long span bridges the substructure design often demands large size foundations. The foundation of theses bridges are usually deep and large in size. The execution of such foundations in maritime environments often involves important temporary works, in order to provide a safe workplace, comply with environmental requirements and achieve high quality standards.Often Pile foundations are preferred solution now a days, but due to various statutory and environmental regulations their construction poses a challenge. With better equipment and corresponding quality control, construction of large diameter pile foundation has emerged as a faster and reliable option.OVER VIEW OF THE PROJECTThe first two lane bridge on NH-8 (Vadodra – Mumbai) known as Sardar Bridge was constructed in 1977, subsequently an additional two lane bridge was constructed in 1999-2000, 29 m downstream of the first. In view of rising volume of traffic and as part of upgradation of NH8, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) proposed to construct 3rd new 4 Lane Bridge 100 m downstream of 2nd Narmada Bridge, based on Central Water and Power research Institute (CWPRS) study and recommendation.The general layout (fig. 1) of the 3rd Narmada bridge has 8 spans of 144 m and 2 spans of 96 m with total length of 1344 m, supported by132 nos. of 1.5 m diameter piles of about 50 m depth. The substructure has leaning “Y” shaped lower pylon of height 30 m together with cast in situ pier diaphragm. The piles are of M40 and superstructure & pylon of M50 grade of concrete."

"This paper discusses the approach followed for the geotechnical design of 355 mm and 457 mm diameter driven open-ended steel pipe piles used for a gas plant at a green field site in Pilbara region in Australia. The principal bearing layer at the site comprises of calcareous Red Bed soils and weak rock, which is the typical geology along a significant length of the northern Western Australian coastline with carbonate content up to 70%. The uncertainty associated with the mechanical behavior of the calcareous soils and cemented soils (weak rocks) presented design challenges in the selection of appropriate pile design method and design parameters for pile capacity estimation during Front End Engineering Design (FEED). The American Petroleum Institute (API)-based design methodology was adopted. The representative design parameters for the Red Bed weak rock were established by treating the weak rock as clay with undrained shear strength as one-half of the characteristic unconfined compressive strength (UCS) value. Both statically load tested and CAPWAP (Case Pile Analysis Wave Program) estimated ultimate axial pile capacities on 25 early pre-production indicator piles demonstrated that the API design methodology for siliceous soils provides reasonable prediction of axial pile capacity in the red bed soils/weak rock and no reduction to API computed axial capacity due to carbonate content is warranted. The results also demonstrated that penalizing axial pile capacity solely based on carbonate content is not appropriate.IntroductionA gas processing facility was proposed to commercialize the gas reserves located 130 km offshore from the north-west coast of Western Australia (WA). The project site is a green field site located in the Pilbara region along the northwest coast of WA. Specific information regarding the site has been withheld due to confidentiality reasons. The site layout is shown in Figure 1.The site comprises low-lying tidal flats, clay pans and sand dunes covered with low scrub. The onshore site levels vary from elevation 1 m to 10 m AHD (Australian Height Datum), with the largest proportion of the area (excluding sand dunes) between elevations of 1 m and 3 m.The onshore facilities are to comprise a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant site, a construction camp, the land-based portion of the materials offloading facility (MOF), roadways, and borrow pit areas.The existing ground levels within the process train area, where pile load testing was performed, vary from over 7 m AHD where the summits and peaks of the central dune exist to typically 1 m to 2 m AHD towards the east and west edges of the dune. The proposed finished grade for the process train is set at 7 m AHD."

Coal has been mined in the central Appalachian coalfields of southern West Virginia, western Virginia, and eastern Kentucky for more than a century. The dwindling reserve base consists in large part of coal that would have been considered unmineable by earlier generations. Nearly every current operation is working on a property where coal has been extracted in the past, from seams either above, below, or both. NIOSH is conducting research aimed at helping mine planners prevent hazardous conditions due to multiple seam interactions. To-date, more than 300 case histories have been collected from underground mines, mainly from central Appalachia. This paper focuses on several of the more challenging situations that have been encountered, including: • Room-and-pillar development 20 ft (6 m) beneath full extraction workings at a depth of 1,000 ft (300m) of cover (Virginia) • Pillar recovery 45 ft above full extraction workings at 900 ft (270 m) of cover (Virginia) • Near-simultaneous room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery with 40 ft (12 m) of interburden and 1,500-2,000 ft (450-600 m) of cover (Kentucky) • Longwall mining directly beneath main entries in overlying seams (West Virginia) • Some of these operations have been highly successful in overcoming the challenges, others less so. The lessons learned from their experience will help ensure that these and similar difficult reserves can be mined safely.
