Since 1982, the US Bureau of Mines has investigated improvements in protection for operators of thin seam shuttle cars. Due to working height restrictions in thin seam mines (=1.22 m or 48 in.). Federal mine regulations require that canopy protection on shuttle cars be provided only in mines =1.07 m (42 in.). However, court obtained variances are granted to mines =1 .22 m (48 in). This paper presents ongoing research to design and evaluate a uniquely positioned, ergonomic compartment for a shuttle car that provides the operator with full canopy protection in working heights of 1.02 m (40 in.).

This paper presents a method for obtaining the correct values of the breakthrough sweep efficiency of the staggered line drive, taking into account the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. Results obtained were different from those previously published, which were obtained by using an inexact shape of the breakrhrough streamline. INTRODUCTION In Section 9.31 of Muskat's' The Flow of Hotnogeticous Fluids Through Porous Media, it is stated that in a staggered line drive flood "the streamline of highest average velocity [is] the line of centers between input and output wells" (see Fig. I). Muskat used this concept to determine the relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the geometry of the staggered line drive pattern. Although it is clear from symmetry considerations that the breakthrough streamline passes through the midpoint between input and output wells, it is equally clear, as shown in Fig. 239 of Ref. 1, that the breakthrough streamline is not represented very well by the straight line joining the input and output wells. Therefore, it is desirable to determine the proper relationship between the breakthrough sweep efficiency and the pattern geometry by using the proper shape of the breakthrough streamline. METHOD OF SOLUTION It was found that the effect of the geometry of the staggered line drive on the breakthrough sweep efficiency can be investigated easily by making use of the method developed in Ref. 2. With this method, it can be shown that the general complex potential for the staggered line drive, which can be considered as a rectangular five-spot, is given in the coordinate system of Fig. 1, by O(z) = In cn(z\m) = +(x,y) + i $(x, y) . (1) where z = x + iy, +(x, y) is the potential distribution and $(x, y) is the stream function. The function cn (zm) is a Jacobian elliptic function of parameter m and has simple zeros at z,. = (2n + 1) K + 21iK and simple poles at z, = 2nK + (21 + 1)iK. Thus, the complex potential behaves like a(z) = ln(z - zr.) in the neighborhood of the production wells and behaves like a(z) = - ln(z - Z,) in the neighborhood of the injection wells. Since (z - z1.v) = rll.ei, we note that the potential + has the proper logarithmic behavior near the two wells, while the stream function $ varies with the angle, decreasing clockwise around the production well and increasing clockwise around the injection well. The functions K(m) and K'(tn), related by K(m) = K'(m,), where m + m, = 1, are known as the complete elliptic integrals of the first kind. By use of other properties of the Jacobian elliptic functions, the general stream function distribution for the staggered line drive can be obtained from Eq. 1: From the Jacobian elliptic function values, sn(0lm) = 0 dn(O(m) = cn(0jm) = 1, and f[K'(m)Iml = 03, it follows that the stream function given by Eq. 2 satisfies the proper symmetry conditions near a production well P located at [K(m), 01 and an injection well I located at [0, K' (m)]. That is, the line IOP in Fig. 1 is a streamline with value G (0. 0) = -0. and the straight lines connecting I and P to the point [K(m), K' (m)] is a streamline of value $[K(m), K' (m)] = -7/2. Similar symmetry conditions are obtained near other wells. It should be nuled that for m = m1, = 0.5, Eq. 2 reduces to the stream function distribution of the regular five-spot given in Ref. 7. SHAPE OF THE BREAKTHROUGH STREAMLINE It is apparent, from symmetry considerations, that the breakthrough streamline ($,) passes through the point [K(m)/2, K' (m)/2]. A new process was studied at large laboratory scale at Université Libre de Bruxelles, under contract with Metallurgie Hoboken-Overpelt. A two cathodes (1m long ; 0.2 m high) channel cell was used at 2000 A/m2, with an electrolyte flow rate up to 1.8 m/sec. The main results may be summarized as follows : cathodes are electro¬refined grade in analysis ; metallographic structure and surface roughness are kept under control up to 1.3 cm (one side deposits) ; silver in cathode is controlled by CI and Br ions in solution ; organics must be used at very low concentrations (in the range of 0.1 mg/1, with a consumption of about 0.01 mg/lh).

The Bureau of Mines has developed several techniques for draining methane from coalbeds in advance of mining. Drilling long horizontal holes from an underground location is one such technique, which was successfully demonstrated in the Pittsburgh and Sunnyside Coalbeds. The same technique has now been applied in the Mary Lee Coalbed at Jim Walter Resources, Inc. 's No. 4 Mine, Brookwood, Ala. , where two holes were drilled horizontally--one to a depth of 1,010 feet (308 m) and the other to 540 feet (165 m). The 1,010-foot (3083) hole proved successful in degasifying a portion of the Mary Lee Coalbed. The hole drained methane for 1 year, during which time the initial gas flow of 200,000 ft3/d (5,663 m3/d) declined to 65,000 ft3/d (1,840 m3/d). Total gas production was 40 x lo6 ft3 (1.1 x lo6 m3 ). The gas was of commercial quality, with 98 pct methane and a heat rating of 990 Btu/ft (36.89 Mj/m3). The methane emissions from the faces of the mine section advancing into the degasified zone were reduced by 60 pct. The 540-foot (165-m) hole was terminated prematurely when it became impossible to maintain an open hole. Because of caving, very little gas was drained through this hole.

Strata behavior and support performance were evaluated in a longwall tailgate test area at the Eagle Nest Mine near Van, WV. The mine operates in the Eagle coalbed which ranges in height from 4 to 6 ft (1.2 to 1.8 m) on the mine property. Rugged topography results in rapid changes in overburden which ranges from 200 to 1200 ft (61 to 366 m). The immediate roof at this mine transitions from sandstone to shale. In some areas the sandstone appears to be massive while in many locations it is highly laminated, fossilized, and interspersed with coal streaks. Horizontal stress levels appear to be sufficient to create instabilities in the roof in some locations, especially where the roof is thinly laminated. Traditionally, hardwood cribs have been used at the mine to provide secondary support for longwall tailgates; Strata Products' Hercules cribs are installed on 8 ft (2.4 m) centers staggered left and right in the tailgate entry. In a 250 ft (75 m) tailgate test area, however, cable bolts were installed in lieu of cribs. The bolts were 12 ft (3.6 m) long tensionable cables anchored with 5 ft (1.5 m) of resin. Four cables were installed across the entry and rows were spaced on 6 ft (1.8 m) centers. Primary roof support was maintained in the vicinity of the test area using 42 in (1.1 m), grade 60, No. 6 (19 mm diameter) resin bolts installed on 4 ft (1.2 m) centers through T-2 channels. The cable test area was located under a stream valley in an area of relatively shallow overburden. Strata instabilities consistently had been associated with the stream valley in both the Eagle and the overlying Powellton coalbeds. In an effort to further expose the cables to the most difficult stress conditions available at the time of the test, the specific site chosen was directly beneath a barrier pillar remaining in the upper Powellton mine (approximately 150 ft (45 m) of interburden separates the two coalbeds).

This paper will discuss the operation and maintenance of Molycorp's Quests Mine ore conveyor system. The 1.2 m wide, steel cable-reinforced conveyor belts are capable of transporting 1089 kt/h of ore over a belt line distance of 3124 m with a vertical rise of 518 m. A portion of the conveyor runs in a 2057 m long underground decline on a 10° slope. Six 448 kW motors power the main 1.2 m wide belts.

One of the major problems in the exploitation of deep copper ore deposits in the Legnicko-Glogowski Copper Field is ground control and, in particular, roof control of the headings. The depth of copper deposits ranges from 600 to 1200 m. The parameters of ore-bearing rocks and the surrounding rocks show considerable variance of strength properties along the mining thickness (Fig. 1). The roof of the openings exploitation headings consists of dolomite-calciferous rocks. The roof strata consist of layers, the thickness of which vary from several centimeters to 0.6 m (sometimes to 1.0 m). These strata differ in strength and are characterized by igneous and sedimentary discontinuities. On the basis of studies in structure, properties and geological mining conditions of the roof strata in Polish copper mines, the method of roof classification has been developed. (1) This method uses the stability index "L" of the roof, calculated from [ ] The value of "t" ranges from 0, l to 0,8. Based on the value of "L", four classes of the roof (Table 1) corresponding to different degrees of fall hazard have been developed. The mining of copper ore deposit is carried out by a single lift room-and-pillar mining system or a two-stage room-and-pillar system with roof caving. (3, 4). The single lift room-and-pillar mining system is most often used. It consists in working of the deposit of 2.5 to 4.5 m mining thickness, 150-350 m long mining line, consisting of parallel room faces 6 m wide with pillars 5.7 or 16 m wide. As the mining line advances, cross-cuts joining individual rooms are made, thus forming support pillars 3x5, 7x7, 5x16, and 7x16 m (Fig. 2). The two-stage system (Fig. 3) mines the deposit with rooms 6 m wide into blocks 25 x 35 x 25 x 45 m. During the second step these pillars are worked with rooms and cross-cuts into pillars about 3 x 4 to 4 x 5 m (retreat mining). The pillars are crushed just before the fall of the roof. The maximum opening of workings in the two-step system is about 10 m, i.e. one belt entry and one row of bearing pillars. In single lift room-and-pillar systems it is about 35 m., i.e. three belt entries and three rows of bearing pillars. The support of the headings consists of expansion bolts 1.6-1.8 m installed in a bolting pattern 1.1 x 1.5 m. In both systems the fall step is about 10 m, i.e. the width of a belt and a bearing pillar. The Indications of Rock Mass Pressure Individual Dog Heading Individual dog headings are set wide apart from each other in the unmined ore deposit area where there is no interaction of headings. The indication of rock mass pressure are, in such cases, limited to the deformations and damage of side walls. Radiometric studies of rock mass loosening showed that the maximum range of lifts in side-walls immediately after web was 2 m (4,5). In the course of time the cracked side rocks fall off, thus widening the heading. The morphology of side-walls is influenced by the location of the heading in relation to clump layer/tarry. The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of ventilation on the performance of automatic sprinkler systems in extinguishing wood crib fires. Experiments were conducted at airflows of 0, 0.76, 1.5, 2.5, and 4.1 m/s. Two experiments were conducted at each airflow, using 74° C fast response pendent sprinklers in one experiment and 74° C fast response horizontal sidewall sprinklers in the other experiment. In the experiments at airflows of 0 and 0.76 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 m upstream and downstream of the fire. The sprinkler directly above the fire was the only sprinkler to operate with no discernible difference in the suppression capability of the pendent and horizontal sidewall sprinklers. In the experiments at airflows of 1.5 and 2.5 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 and 4.8 m downstream of the fire. The sprinkler located 2.4 m downstream was the only sprinkler to operate with the horizontal sidewall sprinkler being more effective in extinguishing the wood crib fire. The average response times of the sprinklers at airflows of 0.76, 1.5, and 2.5 m/s were 3-1/2 times the average response time of the sprinklers at 0 m/s. The results of this study will help enhance the safety of the nation's miners.

Media losses are a significant contributor to the operational cost in a dense media separation (DMS) circuit. Of these losses, up to 80 wt% can occur on the drain and rinse vibrating screens. Although these screens are an integral part of any DMS circuit, surprisingly little work can be found in open literature regarding the effect of aperture configuration on the drain rates (draining water and medium). To establish the effect of slot aperture size, experiments were conducted on a 0.6 x 1.2 m vibrating screen with polyurethane (PU) panels at slurry densities between 1.6 – 2.8 kg/L, and volumetric flow rates of 19 – 25 m3/h for both ferrosilicon and magnetite. Results showed that an increase in the volumetric flow rate led to an increase in drainage rate, moisture content and medium carryover. Once an optimum volumetric flow rate was exceeded, a further increase in flow rate resulted in a decrease in drainage rate with a sharp increase in moisture and medium bypass to the oversize stream. An increase in ferrosilicon slurry density led to a decrease in drainage rate with an increase in moisture and medium bypass with each of these rates increasing as the slurry density increased. For magnetite, a gradual decrease in drainage rate was observed with increase in slurry density and volumetric flowrate beyond the screen optimum point. It was found that an increase in aperture size from 0.63 x 8.8 mm to 0.8 x 8.8 mm to 1.0 x 13 mm resulted in an increase in ferrosilicon drainage rate of between 1.3 - 1.8 m3/m2/h depending on the flow rate and slurry density with a reduction in moisture and medium carryover of between 1.0 – 1.2 % and 14.1 – 20.2 kg/t/m respectively. For magnetite, the drainage rate increased between 1.0 - 1.4 m3/m2/h as the slot width increased from 0.63 x 8.8 mm to 0.8 x 8.8 mm while an increase in slot length from 0.63 x 8.8 to 0.63 x 12 mm only resulted in an increase in drainage rate of 0.1 - 0.5 m3/m2/h.

The introductory paper1 of this series described the potential behavior of tin in sodium carbonate and bicarbonate solutions whose pH ranged from 8.4 to 11.2 and demonstrated that significant and reproducible results could be obtained by proper attention to experimental technique. In examining the corrosion of tin under such conditions, it is desirable to know the effects of anions, aside from carbonate, that are likely to be present in commercial materials packaged in tin. Therefore, in this paper the potential behavior of tin in carbonate solutions to which sodium fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate, monobasic phos-phate, dichromate, perborate and acetate have been added will be dcscribed. For most of the additions, solutions containing 0.001 and 0.01 moles of the added material were studied. The experimental procedure was exactly the same as that described in the first paper; the pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicar-l,ol~ate as follows: pH 0.1 M NaHC0............................................ 8.4 2 parts 0.1 M XaHCOr, 1 pa.rt 0.1 M NaZCO?................. 9.5 1 part 0.1 M NaHCOs, 2 parts 0.1 M iVa.,C03. ................ 10.0 0.1 M Na2C0............................................. 11.2 The reagents used were all of C.P. grade. As part of its mine safety and health research program, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, Pittsburgh Research Laboratory, has been investigating the geologic and mining factors influencing methane gas emissions associated with longwall mining. A primary focus of this research has been the consequences of increasing longwall panel dimensions, particularly face width, in gassy coalbeds. Continuous longwall face emission monitoring studies were conducted at two adjacent mines operating in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed, where longwall faces were to be extended from 229 to 305 m (750 to 1,000 ft). Average longwall pass methane emission rates for 229-m (750-ft) wide faces were 61 % (0.072 m31sec (153 cfm)) higher at the VP-3 Mine than at the VP-1 Mine. It was predicted by regression analysis of methane emissions data from 229-m (750-ft) wide faces that extending faces to 305 m (1,000 ft) would increase methane emission rates by only 7%, or 0.009 m3/sec (20 cfm), to 0.144 mysec (304 cfm) at the VP-1 Mine. In contrast, it was predicted that extending faces to 305 m (1,000 ft) at the VP-3 Mine would increase methane emissions by as much as 13%, or 0.029 mysec (65 cfm), to 0.268 dlsec (567 cfm).

Bureau of Mines research has addressed improved operator protection for thin-seam shuttle cars. Because of working height restrictions in thin-seam mines (1.22 m or 48 in), MSHA regulations require that-canopy protection on shuttle cars be provided only in mines 1.07 m (42 in) and greater; however, variances are given to mines 1.22 m (48 in) and below. This paper reviews past Bureau efforts to develop protective structures for thin-seam shuttle car operators. The paper also discusses recent research leading to a novel method of protecting shuttle car operators, in mines as low as 1.02 m (40 in), through the use of a cross-car, end-mounted operator compartment.

The scope of work included excavation, rockbolt/shotcrete/wire mesh primary support and cast-in-place concrete lining of the (1) 216 m, top flared shaft, connecting 1.57 radian elbow, and 590 m tunnel to a 10.67 m finished diameter; (2) complex double bifurcation section; (3) excavation, support, installation and backfill concrete for three parallel, 135 m steel penstocks of 5.79 m finished diameter; (4) construction of a 43 m diameter reinforced concrete intake/discharge structure atop the shaft.

1. INTRODUCTION For Europe the Arlberg road tunnel signifies the elimination of the largest traffic barrier between Bucharest and Paris in the east-west transversal. Apart from that the tunnel will serve the feeder system to the two north-south links Ulm - Milano, and the Brenner motorway, and links the Inntal and the Rheintal motorways closer together.. Thus, the supraregional road system carrying traffic through the Tyrol and Vorarlberg will considerably be emproved by the Arlberg road tunnel. 2. THE PROJECT The 16.1 km contract section of expressway S 16 includes a ramp section of approximately 2.6 km, the access points at St.Anton and at Langen, and the main 13.98 km section of the road tunnel. This section cuts the link between St.Anton and Langen by 3.7 km, and saves 475 m in altitude. The Arlberg road tunnel is planned to have two tubes with two lanes each. In the first stage the southern tube was under construction. Its traffic capacity is 1,800 car units per hour. The tunnel has a cross section of 9o to 103 m2. The sloping gradients are by 1.3o and 1.67 per cent. Fresh air is supplied and used air removed through a ventilation system, fed at the portals and through two vertical ventilation shafts. One of them, at Maienwasen, is 222 m deep, its cross section 66.5 m2. The diameter in clear is 8.32 m. The vertical shaft Albona is 736 m deep, the diameter in clear is 7.37 m. This paper presents the results of an application of the PSU/USBM Open Pit Materials Handling Simulator (1) to a large stripping mine in the Southwestern Coalfield. The specific objective of the study was to demonstrate the application of the simulator to a complex multi-pit operation, with emphasis on simulating short term and long term production plans recommended for the mine by Theodore Barry Associates (2). Mine Description The mine is located in the Southwestern Coalfield, which encompasses parts of the states of Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. The lease area presently covers 121500 x 103 m2 (30000 acres) in a strip 37.007 x 103 m (23 miles) from north to south and up to 1609 m (1 mile) in width, located at an elevation above 1525 m (5000 ft). Three gently dipping coal seams are present, of which the upper seam (#3) averages 0-5.5 m (0-18 ft); the intermediate seam (#2) averages 0-1.2 m (0-4 ft); and the lower seam (#1) averages 0-2.4 m (0-8 ft). Overburden is mixed sand, gravel, calcareous clay, caliche and sandstone, with calcareous shale and sandstone burden between seams. Where the seams are covered by less than 6.1 m (20 ft) of overburden, they are generally weathered and oxidized and are not extracted. Stripping ratios have ranged from 3.5 to 6.0 with an average of 5.4. All future plans were based on a stripping ratio of 5.3.
