B Lens Main is a scheelite orebody with an average dip of approximately 15¦ and thickness ranging from 1.5 to 6.0 m. The orebody is overlain by a banded section of ore and waste which tends to slab off if left unsupported. It was originally planned to mine a large portion of this orebody by room and pillar methods, with existing diesel trackless equipment. This, however, proved unsuitable for a number of reasons and the smaller scale method of slot stoping with hand machines and scrapers was employed. The following major problems were encountered. 1. The method was new to the mine and the work force, and had to be commenced quickly using existing or easily obtainable equipment. This is gradually being overcome by training, modification of procedures and introduction of more suitable equipment. 2. The slabbing from the hanging wall had to be controlled, either by support or by mining this low grade section and accepting the resultant dilution. This has been approached in a number of ways, depending on conditions and the method will have to be further modified as different conditions are encountered in new areas.

I, 1939, when the Pawnee Royalty Company's Boice No. I well, about 3 miles west of Falls City (NE 1/4 NE 1/4, sec. 18, T.r N., R.16 E., Richardson County) was drilled into the Hunton formation but the develop-ment of the area took place during 1940. After a pumping test lasting 18 days, the Boice well stopped producing and failed to qualify for the State bonus of $ 15,000 offered for the first oil well to produce go bbl. per day for 60 consecutive days. On May 9, 1940, the Pawnee Royalty Company's Bucholz No. I well was completed about M mile southeast of the discovery well and flowed at the rate of about 330 bbl. per day, easily meeting the State bonus requirements. In addition to the discovery well, which later was reconditioned, and the bonus well, 28 producers were drilled in the Falls City field during 1940. Of these wells, 23 are in sec. 20, two are in the northern part 'of sec. 29, two in the southwestern part of sec. 17 and three in the eastern part of sec.

DURING the course of the present investigation of alloy phases involving transition metals, phases were found in the systems Os-Ta, Os-W, and Ir-Ta. The (Os, W) phase was also recently reported by Raub.1 Pertinent information is given in Table 1. The approximate composition range of sta- bility was determined metallographically on arc-melted buttons that were annealed 72 hr at 1200°C and water quenched. X-ray powder patterns were obtained with a 114.6 mm diam powder camera using filtered copper radiation. The composition for (Os, W) given by Raub (66 atomic pct W) is in agreement with the composition range reported here. However, the lattice constants reported by Raub are: a0= 9.913±0.007, c/a= 0.515. The reason for the discrepancy between the lattice constants reported by Raub and those given here is not known. Acknowledgments The authors wish to thank M. H. Mueller and H. W. The effects of radon in drillholes on gamma-ray logs have been described by L. S. Hilpert and C. M. Bunker1 Since these effects may cause drastic error in the evaluation of uranium deposits, it is useful to know the conditions under which significant amounts of radon tend to accumulate in drill- holes. In the studies described here, atmospheric conditions were found to dominate in the control of the behavior of radon in drillholes in the vicinity of a uranium orebody. The site of the investigation was in McKinley County, New Mexico, about 12 miles north of Grants. Drillholes of 4 ¼ -in. diam, on 25-ft and 100- ft centers, penetrate ore in dry rock at a depth of about 100 ft. A geologic log of the drillhole of primary interest is shown in Fig. 1. Gamma-ray logs revealed three zones of ore-grade mineralization in the Todilto limestone. A 6-ft zone, the lowest of the three, assayed 0.20 pct U3O8 by chemical analysis. The limestone ores in this area contain disseminated uraninite and some yellow and orange secondary minerals.

The adsorption behavior of chalcopyrite has been studied at different xanthate concentrations and flow rates in a column apparatus with potassium ethyl xanthate as the collector. Based upon the experiment results an equation of the type: 1/F = K3 + m3C + k2/t.Cm2.fm1 is proposed to account for the experimental data. Among copper minerals an early study on chalcocite by Gaudin and Schuman (Taggart, 1951) is well known for its research on the kinetics of the reaction by conventional method of mass balance between the products of reaction and xanthate consumed. The results were interpreted by the concept of ion exchange adsorption. Szeglowski (1977) conducted measurements on the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on copper polarized to various potentials, the adsorption being measured by radio-tracer techniques. The adsorption in the range -1800 to 700 mv was found to be a reversible physical adsorption. The potential range in which the primary electrode process could lead to surface coverage with a minimum number of product layers was evaluated. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program was applied to fire spread along combustibles in a ventilated mine entry. The rate of flame spread was evaluated for the ribs and roof of a coal mine entry; timber sets; and a conveyor belt. The CFD program models char forming materials with temperature dependent thermal properties. The program solves three dimensional time dependent flow equations with a mixture fraction model for the gas phase reactions. Radiant heat exchange is evaluated for non-scattering gas. The CFD program predicted a flame spread rate of 0.0145 m / s for an actual coal mine fire in which the estimated flame spread rate was 0.0086 m / s. This overestimated flame spread rate was a possible consequence of the presence of inert materials in the mine entry’s roof and ribs. CFD fire spread rate predictions of 0.043 m / s and 0.73 m / s bounded the measured value of 0.27 m / s for fire spread along Douglas Fir timber sets in a tunnel.

The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is the world's largest underground cavern for public use and was created primarily to facilitate the ice hockey tournaments for the 1994 winter Olympics in Norway. The cavern has a span of 61 m, is 91 m long and is 25 m high. Ordinarily, rock caverns have a span width of 15 to 25 m, however, temporary mining caverns of up to 60 m have been excavated and natural caves with even greater dimensions occur. The Gj0vik Olympic Mountain Hall is unique as it is for public use with a capacity for 5800 spectators. Blasting was conducted with a high production rate at normal costs due to detailed planning and strict supervision of each round. The initiation system and vibration monitors were the main tools to control vibration levels and to facilitate a high production rate. It was of utmost importance that the rock remaining in the roofs and walls was of high quality after blasting to avoid rock fall, rock slides and excessive maintenance work.

The combination of new tools with a more rigorous approach to understanding the interaction of mill liners with overall mill performance and economics, forms the basis of an integrated approach to liner management. Based on accurate liner wear measurements, some (limited) physical mill inspections and surveys, accurate calibration of the mill load and analysis of process data, a whole new approach to liner selection, relining intervals and mill control is proposed. Collection and analysis of this information in operating mills illustrates the mill performance improvement which can be attained through this careful measurement and modelling approach.A more holistic approach to liner management is proposed, including a broadening of the current work to cover the potential benefits of improved relining technologies and predictive liner wear modelling. IN the last year, much information had become available as to the extent that zinc participated in the war effort. The importance of foreign zinc in this program had been indicated by Bateman (M&M April 1945) as of the order of 400,000 tons annually in zinc or contained zinc. Pehrson (M&M April 1945) reviewed the domestic ore-reserve situation with respect to most minerals and metals and showed the extent to which commercial zinc ores had become depleted in this country. This picture was further darkened by O.P.A. figures appearing in E.&M.J. July 1945 in which figures for total production during the three previous years were broken down into percentages produced under ceiling and various quota price categories. True, factors other than depleted ore reserves contributed to this picture. Among the more important of these, were shortage and high cost of labor, both skilled and unskilled, and the general difficulty and cost of maintaining adequate equipment and supplies. The cost of production in the Tri-State district was most affected.

The foundation of bored pouring concrete pile have been adopted in the bridge engineering of China since early in the sixties. They demonstrated tremendous technical advantage and achieved notable economic benefit. With improvement of bridge technique including construction technique work equipment, design theory, examination in quality and applicable range etc, the pile diameter became bigger and the foundation changed from shallow to deep-water. This paper examples Jiujiang Bridge of Guangdong in China, which is single-tower cable-staged bridge, total length of 1675m, and expouds adopted successfully the foundation of variable section large bored pile (upper part d=3m, central part d=2. 4m and lower part d=2m) on the conditions of complicated technique that the load is tremendous (it require specially to resist 12000 kN ship impact) and the piles have free length 30m. The paper will be to describle design project and construction practice of pile foundation with variable section, and to compare schemes of equal section pile and pile in sinking-well.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks, held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. PGE-bearing sulphide mineralisation is contained in the lower 600 m of the Upper Central Layered Zone of the intrusion. There are four regimes with distinctive crystallisation characteristics. PGE content is low, both in bulk rock and in terms of metal in 100% sulphides, in the sulphide-rich cumulates but increases sharply in the sulphide-poor cumulates at the base of regime 1. Increases in regime 2 have no such clear relationship with incoming cumulus sulphides. PGE contents are low throughout regime 3, but regime 4 has sulphides with high PGE content, decreasing rapidly upwards, at the base of many of its cyclic units. The observations are interpreted as indicating that sulphide saturation occurred in the middle of a cyclic unit in regime 1, after which fractional segregation of sulphide caused a systematic decrease in PGE content. The resulting contrast between 40 000 ppb PGE in sulphides below the mineralised zone and less than 1 000 ppb above is of practical importance in exploration for such zones. In regime 2 the magma chamber was open to fresh influxes and PGE content was not so sensitive to sulphide saturation. In many regime 4 units influxes of new magma caused immediate sulphide saturation and PGE depletion, so that PGE-rich cumulates do not underlie PGE-bearing sulphide zones. Theoretical analysis indicates that regime 1-type behaviour is likely to characterise intrusions below the level at which plagioclase has entered as a cumulus phase and regime 4-type behaviour above

A rotary type separator has been developed which separates particles on the basis of their shape. This separator was applied to a particle size range of about 50 - 120 ¦m, and to our present knowledge may be the smallest size range ever to be separated. A theory of the separation is given based on the difference of an adhesive force of the particles: the adhesive force between spherical particles and plate is more powerful than that of irregular shaped particles for the same particle size. These facts have been ascertained by the measurement of an adhesive force by a centrifugal method. US and Japanese patents have been obtained on this separator, which consists of a borosilicate glass cylinder of 150 mm outside diameter, 120 mm in width, and an AC electromagnet. The samples used in this study were mixtures of spherical glass particles and non-spherical shaped glass particles. The results are summarised as follows. In the case of mixtures of spherical particles and irregular shaped particles in the weight ratio of 1:1, the spherical content of the spherical product became 70 per cent - 75 per cent, and in the case of 3:1, the content became 87 per cent - 90 per cent, as the result of one separating operation. However, for a mixture of somewhat rounded particles and irregular shaped particles of weight ratio 1:1, the rounded content varied between 58 per cent - 73 per cent. The feed rate of the particles mixtures was about 0.3 g/min. Newton's Efficiency was 20 per cent - 60 per cent. The separator may find application in shape separation of ceramic powder, metal powder or industrial diamond powder.

Discussion by E. Arioglu Y. Luo and S.S. Peng are to be congratulated for their outstanding paper providing new results from surface subsidence monitoring over longwall panels under different conditions. This writer found the authors' paper very interesting. In reference to this paper, the following contributions are offered: • In the paper, the maximum possible subsidence [(ASmax)] induced by chain pillar convergence has been related to a parameter (h/1- p) by linear regression. (Notations are expressed in this discussion's Fig. 1 (b).) It is a well-known fact that in a goaf the roof lowers onto broken material that gradually compacts. Then the physical behavior of goat may closely follow the compaction characteristics of broken materials. In light of this assumption, a mathematical means (Fig. 1(a)) of defining the expected compaction (i.e. surface subsidence) represents an exponential expression between [ASmax/m vs. h/1-p]. This is based on Luo and Peng's field observations from the Appalachian, Illinois and Alabama coal fields. (The coefficient of regression "r" under consideration was computed to be 0.883). • According to Wardell's (1969) findings for board and pillar mining, the maximum possible subsidence can be expressed in terms of maximum pillar loading (depth, ratio of extraction) and the height-to-width ratio of the pillars left. Using Luo and Peng's 1991 results, this writer discovered a regression equation between the above-mentioned factors. As displayed in Fig. 1(b), the functional expression approximates as closely as possible the observed subsidence data. It may be noted here that Wardell's approach (1969) can be successfully utilized for longwall panels having chain pillars. An expression for the distribution ratio of arsenic between slag and copper matte or liquid copper was developed by both, an extension of the Reddy-Blander model for deriving a priori the arsenic capacity, and by a relationship between the arsenic capacity and the arsenic distribution ratio. In this study, the a priori arsenic capacities in the FeO-SiO2, CaO-SiO2, MgO-SiO2, FeO-CaO-SiO2, FeO-FeO1.5-CuOo.5-MgO-SiO2, FeO-FeO1.5-CuO0.5-CaO-MgO and FeO-FeO1.5-CuO0.5-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slags were calculated at 1573 K. The a priori arsenic distribution ratio between the FeO-FeO1.5-CuO0.5-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slag and copper matte (L s/m as), and between the FeO-FeO1.5-SiO2 or FeO-FeO1.5-CuO0.5-CaO-MgO slag and liquid copper (L s/Cu as) were calculated. The model calculated data are found to be in good agreement with the reported experimental data. The availability of reliable thermodynamic data for slag components and impurities in the slag-matte-metal system is essential for the accurate prediction of impurity capacities and distribution ratio data. The arsenic distribution ratio model developed here, can be extended for prediction in multi-component slags and mattes or liquid metal, and thereby may lead to the development of new slag systems for the efficient removal of arsenic in the copper smelting, converting and refining processes.

The application of square shaft helical piers in expansive soils is a standard of practice in many areas of the United States. Over 20 years of performance monitoring show exceptional performance and economy will result if proper design procedures, specification requirements and installation procedures are followed. This is true for new foundations and the repair of existing foundations, including lightly loaded wood-frame structures on expansive soils. Proper design includes: 1) site geotechnical characterization, 2) pier layout such that each pier is loaded to its maximum design capacity, 3) maximize spans between piers, 4) minimize the number of piers, 5) isolate the structure from the expansive soil with an appropriate void zone below all grade beams, slabs or other components that would otherwise be in soil contact and 6) utilize only single helix piers. Proper specification employs a performance specification that specifies: 1) the design load on each pier with a suitable safety factor, 2) the minimum installation torque, typically 4,000 ft-lbs (5.4 kN-m), or refusal, 3) a minimum pier shaft steel Fy = 70 to 90 ksi (483 to 621 Mpa) and pier helix steel Fy = 80 ksi (552 Mpa), 4) 1.5 to 1.75 inch (38.1 to 44.5 mm) square shafts, 5) smooth shaft surface, 6) the ICC Evaluation Report (ER) number of the manufacturer and 7) the manufacturer ISO 9001 certification for material quality control. Proper installation requires: 1) equipment with sufficient axial compression force (crowd) on the pier shaft so the helix engages the soil and advances to the specified minimum installation torque or refusal, 2) additional specialized techniques for expansive soils and 3) qualified specialty helical pier installation contractors experienced in expansive soils who submit and utilize pier configurations, techniques and equipment that will most effectively and economically meet the specified performance.

The installation of piles and casings is becoming increasingly difficult as restrictions on vibration become common in major urban areas. The use of high frequency, resonant excitation of a pile or casing permits ease of installation of sections to great depths with near imperceptible vibrations as close as 1 pile diameter. The new Resonant Driver is able to excite a pile at its resonant frequency (up to 150 Hz or 9000 VPM) to produce elevated levels of acceleration, force and displacement in the pile. The combination of extremely high acceleration and controlled levels of displacement allow the pile to slice through varied soil with almost no vibration translated into the ground. In direct comparisons between conventional vibrators and impact hammers the Resonant Driver produces less than 1/50th the vibration. The Resonant Driver results in ground vibration of between 1/20 and 1/40 of common limit levels (1 cm/s or 0.5 in/sec) as close as 1 pile diameter. At a distance of 5 m (16 ft) from the pile or casing vibration levels approach imperceptible levels. The Resonant Driver uses a proprietary algorithm to tune the drive vibration to the changing natural frequency of the pile as it is driven into the ground. By maintaining resonance the energy in the pile is built up like in a flywheel on an engine or a child on a swing. This build up of energy aids in driving and significantly reduces waste. Recent experience using the Resonant Driver is proving the technology can drive a variety of steel pile and casing sections through varied soils. Continued use of the Resonant Driver will create a data base of various pile and casing sections, soil types and achieved capacities.
