Himalayan ranges on the northern border of India are source of many perennial rivers and suitable sites for large dams have been located therein. However, Himalayas are young mountains and comprise of comparatively weaker rocks having adverse geological features like shear seams, thrust zones, minor and major faults and intense jointing. Tehri dam project under construction, is located in lower Himalayas. It envisages construction of a 260.5 m high earth and rock fill dam and an underground power station of 2000 MW (Eight machines of 250 MW each, four of which will be reversible) installed capacity. This dam will be the highest and the underground complex will be the largest to be constructed in India in the Himalayas. The under- ground complex comprises of 25 km of tunnels varying in diameter from 6 m to 11 m and seven large cavities of various sizes, the biggest being 22 m in width, 194 m in length and 65 m in height. Rock formation in the power house complex belong to phyllites having various joint sets spaced from 0.5 m to 3 m. Due to the poor geological conditions and closely spaced net work of large cavities, the planning, analysis and design of the cavities is a challenging job. Many aspects have to be considered in determining the sizes, locations and orientations of the various cavities taking into account the properties and jointing pattern of rock mass, functional requirements and economics. Correct evaluation of loads and forces is necessary for economical design of supporting system for the various cavities. Rock loads on the roof of cavities and their supporting system will be assessed with the help of the latest methods. The stability of the rock mass around the cavity will be evaluated by elasto- plastic method using finite or boundary element techniques. A scheme of field investigations, laboratory tests and instrumentation for deter- mining rock properties in preconstruction stage and for monitoring behaviour of the underground cavities during and after construction is envisaged.

The Bagdad mill, built in 1977, was de-signed for a mill capacity of 36,300 tpd. An ABC (Autogenous Mill-Ball Mill-Crusher) grinding circuit was chosen. The original mill contained three completely independent grinding circuits, each containing one 9.75 m diameter by 3.96 m long fixed speed autogenous mill, one 4.72 m diameter by 6.71 m long ball mill and one 2.13 m diameter short-head cone crusher. Total installed power per grinding circuit was 8,464 kw with 5,966 kw in the autogenous mill, 2,237 kw in the ball mill and 261 kw in the crusher. (See FIGURE I--Major Equipment Flow Diagram.) The autogenous mills were designed to be able to operate semi-autogenously but were never converted to SAG. As a result of this design, only about 4,100 kw of the designed power is utilized in the autogenous mills. The grinding circuits are closed with 2.44 m by 6.10 m double deck vibrating screens. Screen oversize is returned, by a series of conveyors, underneath the mill coarse ore stockpile to feed the crushers. Variable speed belts feed the crushers and control power draw. Crusher product reports directly to the tail end of the autogenous mill feed belt. (See FIGURE 2--Typical Crusher Feed and Product Size Distributions.) Tramp iron in the autogenous mill-crusher circuit is handled in a unique way. A magnetic sensor detects the metal. This closes a gate which directs the crusher feed onto a separate belt which bypasses the crusher and returns the material to the autogenous mill feed belt.

The wire-rope hoisting conditions at the mines of the Anaconda Coppcr Mining Co. in Butte, Mont, are very severe because of the conditions under which it is necessary to operate. A study was made, in the fall of 1919, for the purpose of changing these conditions in order to obtain longer rope and sheave life. There are at present in Butte hoisting engines equipped with wire rope as follows: 9 main hoists using flat ropes. 7 main hoists using 1 1/2-in. rope. 5 main hoists using 11/4-in. rope. 6 shafts using 11/8-in. rope. 2 chippy hoists using 11/4-in. rope. 9 chippy hoists using 11/8-in. rope. 15 shafts using 1-in. rope. 7 shafts using 7/8-in. rope. 1 shaft using 3/4-in. rope. In addition, there are a number of sinking engines wing 5/8-in, 3/4-in., 7/8-in., and 1-in. (15.9, 10, 22, and 25 mm) rope. THe flat ropes run from 1/2 by 71/2 in. (12.7 by 1905 mm.) to-3/8 by 4 1/2-in (9.5 by 114 mm.) and are used on the older hoisting engines, which arc set comparatively close to the shaft. Because of swelling and moving ground at some of the shafts, these ropes present certain difficulties ill operation that are more pronounced than with round ropes; they are, therefore, being superseded by round ropes as newer engines are being installed. They are, however, much more easily inspected and repaired than round ropes. In general, the practice in Butte is to use hoisting engines equipped with 12-ft. (3 7 m.) cast-iron drums, smooth faced, for 11/2-in. rope and 6-ft. cast-iron drums, smooth faced, lagged with 3/8-in. steel plate for 11/4 l1/8 and 1-in. "Abstract This paper discusses the execution of pile installation and design issues at two environmentally challenging industrial sites in North America. Environmental regulations set constraints on the design and require versatility in choice of technology.For a proposed bridge, due to protected fish habitat, performing soil borings within 30 m of the creek embankment was prohibited. The limited subsurface profile indicated a thick upper layer of granular material, thus driving H-piles was considered. However, to limit generation of vibration and noise in the protected area, drilled piles had to be used. During execution, the subsurface profile differed from that in the borings 30 m away. Very soft, saturated silt was encountered at the bottom of the caisson and the length had to be redesigned very quickly while the contractor waited for instruction. For a new structure in uncontrolled fill area, performing soil borings was not allowed. It was known that a layer of peat was present in the area, but no information regarding the thickness and extent. The subsurface profile generally consisted of granular material overlying a thick compressible silt layer. Somewhere within the granular layer peat would likely be encountered. Franki piles were chosen to penetrate the peat and bear in the underlying granular material. During environmental sampling in the area, methane gas was encountered and Franki piles were no longer a viable option due to safety concerns. The foundation system was changed to steel H-piles driven to bedrock, which was more than 50 m below the ground surface and sloping. Rock shoes that would work to significant slopes had to be used in order to increase the likelihood of good embedment within the bedrock. Also, due to obstruction of an approximately 3 m thick debris field that was encountered in the upper granular soils, some of the piles had to be relocated and extra piling needed to compensate for such differences. The results of PDA testing to estimate compressive capacity and a series of lateral load tests are presented.INTRODUCTIONThe design issues that are encountered during construction can be quite problematic and have a significant impact on schedule. In order to avoid such impact on the project, a thorough subsurface investigation should be considered prior to design and construction. Better understanding of environmental regulations also prevents costly changes to the foundation design. This paper discusses the execution of pile installation and the design issues at two environmentally challenging sites in North America.BRIDGEDuring the subsurface investigation for a proposed industrial building complex, several boreholes were drilled within the footprint or in close proximity of various structures, with Standard Penetration (SPT) sampling of the upper coarse-grained soils (sand/gravel) and undisturbed sampling of the lower fine-grained soils (silt/clay). The SPT blow counts (N60) were corrected by a factor of 1.35 in order to incorporate the SPT automatic energy transfer ratio. When Modified California Sampler was used, a correction factor of 0.44 to 0.64 was also applied. N60 values were further corrected for gravel to avoid artificially high blow counts during the analyses due to spoon samples contact with gravel and cobbles, and the corrected values of (NG)60 (limited to a maximum value of 50 blows/300 mm) were used for design. The information from the SPT boreholes was then used to assess the subsurface conditions beneath the structures, as well as for a nearby bridge that was designed to cross over a creek. Since performing soil borings within 30 m of the creek embankment was prohibited due to the protected fish habitat, the investigation with regard to the bridge abutments was limited to two deep boreholes (B10-33 and B10-34) at the bridge location and two additional boreholes (B10-35 and B10- 36) located approximately 200 m upstream. Compared with the traditional pre-treatment process, biological oxidation process has many advantages including higher gold recovery, less cost, easier operation. The bio-oxidation reactor is the most important equipment for biological oxidation process. In this paper, the characteristics of biological oxidation are investigated, and the design principles are proposed based on laboratory tests. Both increasing the tank height and taking new inflation system can enhance higher dissolved oxygen. The new type of large-scale industrial bio-oxidation reactor is designed, which is 9.5 m in diameter and 10 m in height. The bio-oxidation reactor metallurgical performance has been tested by industrial-scale experiment. The slurry of flotation concentrate is divided into two parts to feed two bio-oxidation reactors. The feeding rates of two reactors are adjusted on the basis of getting the same content of S, Fe, As in overflow. The result shows that the feeding rate of the new type of 700 m3 bio-oxidation reactor is 3.72 m3 per hour, and the feed rate of the conventional 700 m3 bio-oxidation reactor was 3.23 m3 per hour. The processing capacity of the former is 15.2% higher than that of the later, which demonstrates the new type of bio-oxidation reactor has higher oxidation rate.

IN recent years the Homestake mine has been served by three shafts, the B. &. M., the B. & M. No; 2 and the Ellison, supplemented by an inside shaft, the Milliken, extending from the 2000-ft. level to the 3200-ft. level. In 1932, when a new operating shaft was under consideration, the bottom of the mine was at the 3200-ft. level. The B: & M. and the B. & M. No. 2 shafts were down to the 1550-ft. level and the Ellison was being deepened from the 2600 to the 3200-ft. level. All ore was hoisted at the B. & M. and-Ellison shafts. Levels below the 2600 level, which were under development only, were served by the Milliken shaft. Below the 1550-ft. level, the mine was served only by the Ellison shaft from the surface. Within a few years, when ore reserves above the 1550-ft. level would be depleted, operation would be limited to the Ellison shaft and the auxiliary underground shaft. The Ellison shaft alone was not adequate for hoisting the entire output from the deeper levels and also handling all men and supplies. Further-more, assurance of safety and uninterrupted operation required- two fully equipped shafts to the deeper levels. Therefore a new operating shaft was authorized in November, 1932, and was named for A. J. M. Ross, the mine superintendent.

The Northside Storage Tunnel is a TBM driven rock tunnel system designed to collect and store sewage from four major storm overflow points along the existing Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. At present, sewage overflows during wet weather are the main source of pollution for Sydney Harbour. The tunnel system comprises a 16 km long by 3.8 m to 6.5 m diameter tunnel from Lane Cove to the North Head Sewage Treatment Plant and a 4 km long by 6.3 m diameter branch tunnel from West Chatswood. The tunnel will have a typical rock cover of about 50 m to 150 m. Most of the tunnel alignment is contained within the Hawkesbury Sandstone Formation which is generally an excellent tunnelling stratum, and offers few geotechnical constraints. However, the tunnel is required to pass beneath incised palaeochannels at Middle Harbour and Manly with each palaeochannel containing about 70 m of sediment.Innovative geotechnical and geophysical investigations were undertaken to examine the tunnel route and characterise the rock beneath the palaeochannels. These investigations have located zones of poor quality rock beneath one palaeochannel in particular, suggesting significant stress relief had taken place in the rock at times of lower sealevel producing structural features indicative of valley bulging. This paper presents the geotechnical model developed for the tunnel, and the models and constraints for tunnelling beneath the palaeochannels.

In the Santa Eulalia mining district, Chihuahua, Mexico, the main mineral zone occurs in a gently warped dome with simple associated structures and contains orebodies distributed through a vertical range of over 900 m. The stratigraphy of 1945 m of geologic column is described and an abrupt shrinkage is documented in the volume of limestones immediately associated with large orebodies. Termed collapse, this shrinkage occurred during the course of mineralization. Contacts of limestone with igneous sills, and 366 m of fossiliferous limestone beds, particularly the main fossil bed, have been important localizers of ore-bodies. Up-dip gravitational controls may have been important. Fractures have exerted only local controls and over short distances. Thrust zones have displaced diabase sills and in turn have been intruded by upper members of a group of rhyolite porphyry sills. Mineralizers were related to the rhyolite porphyry, and ore has been introduced to the limestone where certain sills lie between the displaced segments of diabase and have been cut by north-south fissures. Speculations are raised that fields of unreleased strain may have influenced orebody locations; the district's zoning pattern may be a reflection of the filtering effects of large volumes of limestone; and that metal-rich brines mobilized by or incorporated within the invading porphyry might be the source of the mineralizers. PRODUCTION AND LOCATION The Santa Eulalia district has a production record approaching or exceeding 35 million tons of silver-lead-zinc ore from replacement bodies in limestone. In operation since the first years of the 17001s, production has been confined to two intensely mineralized areas separated by 2 km of barren limestone, the West Camp and the East Camp. Probably 50% has been mined since 1908, with over 90% from the West Camp. The West Camp, exploited through a vertical depth of 1945 m and now approaching exhaustion, is the subject of this paper. The district lies in the northern part of the Santa Eulalia Mountains in central Chihuahua in northern Mexico, 400 km south of El Paso, Texas, and 22 km southeast of Chihuahua City. Dominating the northern part of the range is the Cerro de Santa Eulalia, a broad rolling upland which contains the district's West and East Camps. The West Camp, on the west side of the range, centers around the village of Santo Domingo, which is 2 km northeast of the Real de Santa Eulalia (Fig. 1). REGIONAL GEOLOGY Thick-bedded middle Cretaceous limestones, probably Aurora, form the great bulk of the Cerro de Santa Eulalia. Most, if not all, of the six recognised post-Cretaceous, predominantly andesitic mineralised belts in the region are now thought to be subduction-related magmatic arcs. The Inner Carpathian arc and the Eastern Bosnia or Drina-Rhodope arc host numerous vein and replacement deposits with epithermal features and Zn-Pb+/-Ag as the predominant economic minerals. In contrast, the south Apuseni Mountains have produced over 1 600 t Au from epithermal veins but very little Zn-Pb. Recent age determinations and geophysical data from the Baia Mare district of the Inner Carpathians suggest that mineralisation succeeded volcanism by 1-2 m.y. and accompanied crustal extension and the cooling of a large, mushroom-shaped pluton whose boundaries define the mineral district. In the south Apuseni district, mineralisation can be explained by mixing of meteoric with low-salinity metamorphic water expelled during intrusion of mafic rocks into the middle or lower crust. The more continental or cratonic crust in the Drina-Rhodope and Inner Carpathian arcs precluded the input of low-salinity, Au-bearing metamorphic water; the Zn-Pb deposits formed where convecting meteoric water mixed with saline water, possibly introduced through carbonate rocks in the basement

Dr David Greenwood opened the first technical session of the conference by highlighting the diverse nature of the papers in this session but drawing attention to the common theme that each solved a particular problem. PAPER 1.1 Tony Elliott introduced his paper on deep mix-in-place soil/cement stabilisation by stressing its simplicity. The engineering solution adopted at Elland was detailed in his paper and had formed the key to success of the project. The process itself is not widely used or known in the UK, although it has the potential to achieve significant benefits, subject to proper engineering control being exercised. It was explained that although the concept was not new, development of the technique for soil modification was relatively recent. The alternatives to mechanical mixing are injection, which is very dependent on soil type, site geometry, etc, and jet grouting; both processes are soil-responsive, and not easily monitored or programmed, difficulties which can largely be overcome by mixing. To achieve this at depths to say 30m requires high-powered, high torque machines and has resulted in significant equipment development.

"The Deep Ocean Resources Development Co. Ltd. (DORD) of Japan signed a 15-years contract with the International Seabed Authority for exploration of polymetallic nodule in a 75,000 km2 area, consisting of West and East Areas in the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zone in 2001. The exploration work is now concentrated in resource estimation of the first generation of mining area, the High Abundance Area.A detail survey of the Model Area, set in the High Abundance Area, was conducted using AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) equipped with MBES (Multi-Beam Echo Sounder), SSS (Side Scan Sonar), Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP) and still camera. The seafloor topographic map based on 1 m grid data was produced in an area of approximately 80 km2 (Figure 1). Photographs, continuously covering the seafloor taken by AUV along two west-east trending traverse lines, together with detail seafloor topographic map produced from MBES give an excellent opportunity to observe distribution manner of pollymetalic nodule related to topographic features. This helps to understand more accurate resources estimation of a whole area of the High abundance Area. Furthermore, information of micro-topography gives ideas for conducting ore collecting operation and designing ore collector."

Many concepts for the commercial production of deep-seabed manganese nodules have been studied since the 1970s. However, the bearing capacity of the deep seabed is not strong because it is composed of fine particles with high moisture content. So it is impossible to carry manganese nodules in the collection system. Therefore, the validity of continuous mining by riser pipe from the seabed to the vessel is highly appreciated. A continuous mining system is composed of mining vessel, lifting pipe, buffer system, transport tube (flexible pipe), and self-propelled mining robot. A conceptual diagram of this system is shown in Fig. 1(a). Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) developed a deep-seabed self-propelled mining robot called "MineRo" to collect manganese nodules in 2012 (as shown in Fig. 1(b)). In 2013, real sea experiments at around 1380 m depth were carried out to evaluate the collecting and driving performance of MineRo. However, we found that the roller in MineRo did not work well at times. To elucidate the problem, we analyzed the rheological characteristics between the bushing and drive shaft under deep-water conditions.

Big Creek Tunnel 2, constructed in 1912, is located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, east of Fresno. It is horseshoe and circular shaped with a 3.6m (12ft) diameter and extends 6.6km (4.1mi). Historically, tunnel performance suffers from highly jointed rock and low cover. In 2003, leaks were observed surfacing through outcrops of highly jointed graniodiorite, and subsequently investigated by visual inspection, joint mapping, ground penetrating radar, and a water-tracing survey. Several grouting targets were identified as a result of these investigations. Cement grouting was used to fill void spaces, broken rock and open joints expected to exist behind the concrete and steel liners. Project work consisted of grout hole drilling through the existing concrete liners, and grout placement through squeeze packers supplied by standard grout hose and portable grout plants. Grout pressures were typically 20?30 psi. Grouting was completed in 16 days with a total of 1,550 sacks of Type II/III grout placed at the three likely leak source areas. No grout was observed exiting the tunnel and the leak was stopped.

A 2 1/2 inch diameter probe containing a high resolution gamma ray spectrometer was developed for downhole ore grade assays to depths of 6,000 feet. Tests have been conducted on the characteristics of this tool for in-situ determinations of uranium by means of natural gamma ray counting, and of copper, silver, gold, iron and coal quality by means of neutron-induced gamma rays. Application of the technique for improved carbon-oxygen logging in oil fields is promising. The probe contains a cryogenically cooled high purity germanium detector and a 4,000 channel spectrum analyzer. Gamma ray spectra are digitally transmitted up the cable to the truck-mounted data processing system. We found that uranium can be assayed directly in different types of formations independently of the degree of geochemical disequilibrium by counting the relatively weak 1.001 MeV gamma ray of protactinium-234m. Neutron activation work shows that in-situ determinations of copper, silver, iron and coal quality are technically feasible. In carbon-oxygen oil well logging the technique allows an accurate determination of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine, silicon, calcium and iron, and shows promise of providing an improved oil/water differentiator.

Many kinds of shield machines are being driven in the soft ground of Tokyo metropolitan area. Tunnel alignments for underground power transmission lines are generally planned to pass under public roads where facilities, especially life-line facilities, are densely located. Therefore, it is frequently required to drive the shield machines along very sharply curving routes. This paper reports on the performance of the new shield machine - the Sharp Curve Excavation Shield Machine - developed by Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc., which can freely drive along a much sharper curve than conventional machines. Some of features of the developed devices of this machine are, maximum flexing angle of 6.5 degree in all deirection at the middle of shield body, maximum bending angle of 3.5 degree in all direction at the cutter disc, and so on. This shield machine can there- fore drive along curve of minimum radius 15m. The machine was confidently applied to the const- ruction of tunnel in soft clay strata at N values 2 to 5. Outer diameter 3.7m. Length 202m. Horizontal curve; radius 15m, length 20m x 2. Vertical curve; radius 30 m, inclined driven up 29%. The behaviors of the shield machine, segments and surrounding ground were monitored during construction for safety and efficiency check of this machine.

The Golden Mile, which has been mined continuously for the past 100 years by both underground and more recently open pit methods, occupies an area of 1.2 km by 4 km adjacent to the city of Kalgoorlie Boulder in Western Australia (Figure 1). Large-scale open pit mining at the Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston operations is currently extracting 7.8 million tonnes of oxide and sulphide ore for a total production of 522 000 oz per annum. The effectiveness of grade estimation techniques at KCGM has been examined with reference to existing 10 m bench sample data from all operating areas within the Eastern Lode System of the Main and North pits. The aim of the study was to recommend practical parameters for grade control estimation. The review included comprehensive variography and comparison of nonparametric estimation methods (Joumel, 1983) such as indicator kriging and probability kriging with ordinary kriging, leading to the development of improved grade control parameters and procedures for both daily quality control and short term mine planning. This paper reviews the geological, statistical, geostatistical, mining and modelling features studied in order to present KCGM's Mining Department with recommendations for improving grade control.

This paper describes the features of the equipment on CDM vessels engaged in maritime construction in Japan: the DCM No. 3 barge, the DCM No. 6 barge, and the DCM No. 8 barge. The DCM No. 3 barge is a large vessel with a mixing area of 5.7 m2. The design of the elevator of the deep mixing unit on the DCM No.3 barge enables us to conduct deep underground/ sea operations. This enables us to conduct mixing at depths of up to 52.6 m below the seabed and up to 70.5 m from the water surface. Additionally, since the tower is installed on the center of the barge, it has excellent stability. The DCM No. 6 barge and DCM No. 8 barge are mid-sized vessels with a mixing area of 4.6 m2. The DCM No. 6 barge was fitted in 2013 with energy conservation equipment and upgraded to an environment-friendly CDM barge. The energy saving upgrade used electric power, instead of hydraulic power, by inverter controlled alternating current motor for both mixing unit and main hoisting winch. This enables the using on effective use of regenerative power when the deep mixing unit is lowered. A feature of the DCM No. 8 barge is that it has an inclinable tower located at the bow section for elevating the deep cement mixing unit. Since the tower can be greatly inclined, the hull has a lower center of gravity and greater stability when the vessel turns. This also allows the vessel to pass below bridges and simplifies cruise preparations, outfitting and dismantling work.INTRODUCTIONThe cement deep mixing method (CDM method) involves mixing and stirring a cement-based solidifier into soft ground to rapidly bring the ground to the desired firmness. This method is used to suppress ground shear deformation, increase strength, increase slip resistance, and mitigate liquefaction and subsidence. It has been recently used in Japan in the construction of revetments at controlled waste disposal sites, both to boost the strength of the seabed and to prevent the seepage of waste matter and other pollutants. Undertaking CDM construction work at sea requires specially constructed marine construction CDM vessels. Since CDM construction at sea entails many more restrictions on working conditions than construction on land, the vessels themselves sometimes need to be modified. This paper will describe 1) the remodeling of the turrets and mixing machinery for mixing to great depths in deep water (DCM No. 3 barge with eight axes); 2) the upgraded of equipment on board CDM vessels after accounting for environmental considerations (DCM No. 6 barge with four axes); and 3) the use of a inclinable tower (DCM No. 8 barge with four axes)."

"INTRODUCTION As a part of the wartime activities of the Bureau of Mines, metallurgical services were extended to other Government agncies engaged in purchasing and stock-piling some of the more critical and strategic materials. At the request of Dr. Alan M. Bateman, special representative of the Metals Reserve Company, metallurgical studies were made on three samples of oxide tin ore from, the States of Zacatecas and Guanajuato, Mexico. The samples were submitted for testing by A. Porraz of the Financiera Miners, S. A., institution Financiera, Edificio Guardiola, Despachos 500-507, Mexico, D. F.The samples as received were marked Nos. 1, 2, and 3 and described as follows:Sample 1. - Origin: Mining camp ""El Naranjo,"" municipality of Sombrerete, State of Zacatecas, Mexico. This sample was partly concentrated by washing and as received was all minus 10-mesh in size.Sample 2. - Origin: Deposits in Sierra. Fria and Juan Cherey, municipality, of Jerez,State of Zacatecas, Mexico. This sample represented run of-mine ore.Sample 3. - Origin: Mine ""La Frontere, "" Ranch of San Pedro del loya, State of Guanajuato, Mexico. This run-of-mine sample was low in tin content but came from a highly mineralized tin field."
