"For a drainage channel built in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a value engineering (VE) proposal incorporating a secant pile top-down approach saved time and facilitated construction work on the larger flood control project. The channel, at the Bechara Industrial Area, Puerto Nuevo Port Facility and the Puerto Rico Maritime Shipping Authority Dock, was needed to allow drainage of the Rio Puerto Nuevo into San Juan Bay. The port area, one of the busiest in the Caribbean, has over 6,000 ft (1,800 m) of berthing wharves for ocean-going container ships along with over 500,000 sq ft (46,000 m²) of container loading and unloading areas, and is critical to the local economy.Planners wanted to minimize the impact of construction to the port and dock users, and developed a construction methodology and work sequencing that would prevent a complete barrier to port traffic. This plan involved non-contiguous and limited work area that “leapfrogged” along the alignment so as to prevent long barriers to lateral traffic movement across the culvert alignment.After reviewing the project plans and schedule, Morris-Shea Bridge Company (MSB) proposed an alternate design and construction approach that provided significant cost and schedule benefits, and also provided better access for the port and dock users. The alternate VE proposal involved top-down construction methodology and redesigned drainage culvert geometry with two parallel 2,000 linear ft (lf) (600 m) secant walls installed on each side of the culvert. These walls facilitated excavation and formed part of the culvert permanent walls. The result was a significantly reduced required construction right of way that allowed construction work in contiguous areas largely without impact on ongoing port activity. MSB conceived the design concept, and engineered design and construction of the VE alternate secant pile culvert.The project initially consisted of an open channel in the industrial area picking up water from the existing Rio Puerto Nuevo, transitioning to an enclosed culvert through the port and dock areas, and outfall through the existing dock. "This paper covers the planning, development, and mining of an underground pillar complex using a bulk mining method. To achieve the long-term goal of continually improving our operating processes, all cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill workplaces at Thompson Mine have been evaluated for their conversion potential to the bulk method referred to as VerticalBlock Mining (V.B.M.).Since December 1979, conversion has occurred to the extent where 80% of the ore hoisted is mined using Vertical Block Mining (V.B.M.).Productivity and profitability have been substantially improved by converting to this bulk method, especially in pillar areas.IntroductionThompson Mine is a 6000 ton per day underground nickel mine located 3 miles outside the City of Thompson, 400 air miles north of Winnipeg . The mine has two shafts, T-l and T-3 (Fig. 1). The T-l shaft is 4427 feet deep with the deepest mining taking place on 4000 level. The T-3 shaft, which is the area of this presentation, extends to a depth of 2607 ft with the deepest operating level at 2400 ft. The two shafts, some 10 000 ft apart, are connected underground on numerous levels. The ore mined at T-3 is trammed on 2400 level to the T-I main ore pass and hoisted through the T-l shaft. Eight hundred and fifty thousand cubic feet of fresh air per minute ventilates the mine.The 1400 level 310 pillar complex is located in the T-3 mine area. There are six rib pillars, two crown pillars and one main pillar (boundary pillar between cut-and-fill stopes) within the complex (Fig. 2). The majority of the ore in this area has been mined using mechanized cut-and-fill techniques .Undercut-and-fill mining was the method originally planned to recover these pillars. It is slow, labour-intensive, and requires extensive use of timber during the mining cycle. The extraction drifts in the area are heavily timbered due to their proximity to the ore and the age of the facilities. Increasing drift maintenance costs and the successful mining of two main pillars with V.8.M. techniques provided the stimulus to review the mining plans for this area."

Exploration for undersea polymetallic sulfide mineral resources with high economic potential would be more effective given an ability to predict sites with particularly high gold contents (averaging say > 10 ppm Au). Herzig et al (1993) addressed this issue shortly after recognition that deposits in the back-arc Lau Basin (average 3.8 ppm Au) were enriched in gold relative to mid-ocean ridge sites (average 1.2 ppm Au). Small but significant numbers of hydrothermal sites with massive sulfide deposits averaging >10 ppm Au have since been discovered. The principal genetic factors underlying gold enrichment include depositional processes at and below the seabed, and the source of gold. It is timely to consider whether resolution of their relative importance can be translated into practical criteria for exploration strategies focused on especially gold-rich deposits. Comparing the ?grade? of seafloor deposits using analyses cited in research papers is fraught with difficulty, but there is no alternative at present to assuming that such averages provide an initial tenor guide. On this basis, four known polymetallic hydrothermal sites from convergent plate margins fit the exceptional-gold category with >10 ppm ?average? Au, while one from a divergent margin comes close: Sunrise (Myojin Knolls; 20 ppm ?average? Au) and Suiyo Seamount (28 ppm Au) in the Izu-Bonin Arc are frontal arc volcanoes dominated by rhyolite and dacite respectively, contrasting with more common mafic neighbor edifices (Iizasa et al., 1999). In both cases gold-rich massive sulfides occur in summit calderas with significant development of pumiceous volcaniclastic rocks, at depths around 1300 and 1370 m respectively. In the Eastern Manus Basin, PACMANUS (~1700 m; 14 ppm Au) and Suzette (~1550 m; 22 ppm Au) occur along the crests of volcanic ridges dominated by dacite/rhyodacite and andesite/mafic dacite respectively (Binns, 2004). Caldera structures are lacking. Although the Eastern Manus Basin is tectonically a rifted back-arc, its submarine volcanic edifices (picritic basalt to rhyodacite) have distinctly arc-style geochemical and isotopic affinities, differing from more typical back-arc basin basalts at the spreading axis further west (central Manus Basin). Probably as a consequence of transpression and a marked rupture in the New Britain subduction zone, submarine arc volcanism has here extended into the rifted back-arc region.

The apatite deposits in east-central Bahia, Brazil, are about 50 km east of Serra do Jacobina, between lat. 11° and 12° S. and long. 39°40' and 40° W. Apatite was found and examined at 15 localities in a mineralized belt that strikes about N.25° - 30 W. over a distance of about 100 km, but the size of the deposits has not yet been determined. Rocks of the region consist of a sequence of Precambrian migmatites and quartz feldspar paragneisses containing units of pyroxene-rich rocks, lenses of sillimanite-bearing quartzite, amphibolite zones, and calc-silicate marble lenses. Pegmatites and granites of probable anatectic origin (anatexite) are abundant. Faults are numerous. Clastic sediments of Tertiary and Quaternary ages cover most of the area; thus, outcrops of the Precambrian rocks are sparse. Trenches and pits have exposed mineralized zones as much as 10 m wide at some localities within the region. A layer of apatite at least 1 ½ m thick is exposed in a trench at Lagoa do Mel. At Rio do Peixe, vertical shafts have penetrated a mineralized zone, to a depth of as much as 13 m, of which about 25 percent is apatite. Apatite is massive or forms minute crystals, stringers, and disseminated grains in alkalic host rocks. At Apolinario, euhedral crystals of apatite are as much as 50 cm long and 30 cm in diameter. Associated minerals include vermiculite, biotite, scapolite, opal, chalcedony, epidote, montmorillonite, chlorite, kaolinite, sericite, magnetite, and limonite. Apatite is everywhere intimately associated with pyroxene-rich rocks, alkalic syenite pegmatites, and alkalic granite pegmatites. At Panelas-Retiro, apatite is associated with pegmatites, crystalline calcite (vein calcite), vermiculite, and pyroxene-bearing rocks. Analyses of samples show that the apatite is radioactive and rare-earth-bearing. Traces of vanadium and titanium were detected by spectroscopic analysis. The apatite was probably derived from phosphatic zones in the original Precambrian sedimentary rocks and has been crystallized and some mobilized by high-temperature regional metamorphism (higher amphibolite facies) into veins, pegmatites, and along certain preferred beds and fractures. Radiometric and geophysical surveys, in addition to conventional geological investigations, are planned to further investigate the nature and economic potential of the deposits.

Underlain by and intruded into the sedimentary rocks of the Transvaal Supergroup the Bushveld Complex is the largest known layered intrusion in the world and contains one of the richest ore deposits on earth. It has been the world's major source of Platinum Group Metals (PGM) since the mid-1900s with Chromite and PGMs the two most economically important components of the Bushveld Complex. The lower group (LG), within the critical zone, consists of seven chromitite layers and it is within this sequence of chromitite layers, the most important target of the lower chromitite group is found, ie the LG6 chromitite unit. The LG6 chromitite unit consists of a chromitite duplex composed of the lower LG6 chromitite layer (Steelport seam), averaging 1 m thick, overlain by a 0.66 m waste parting and a thin 0.34 m thick LG6a chromitite layer (leader layer).Two mining methods are commonly applied in the Bushveld Complex to extract the LG6 chromitite layer package. One method consists of footwall development utilising rail bound equipment to gain access to the orebody and then extracts only the LG6 chromitite layer by means of hand held rock drills and scraper winches. The second method is the use of mechanised equipment to access the orebody on the plane of the ore utilising bord and pillar mining method, which extracts the full mineral resource, ie the LG6 and LG6a layers. Conventional narrow vein stoping is often selected due to the large conventional mining skills base found in South Africa, the perceived cost and dilution implications of utilising mechanised equipment, and the difficulties of using mechanised equipment at dips above 12¦. The driving factor for mechanised mining is the perceived ability to access the orebody quickly and inexpensively, and extract the entire mineral resource package (LG6 and LG6a) while limiting capital expenditure and improving safety.This paper investigates these two commonly applied approaches, highlighting the benefits and problems associated with the two approaches. Comparisons will be made of the two mining methods and recommendations given for the mining engineer to consider before selecting the appropriate mine design.

PrioR to 1902, the tramming of ore from the stopes to the shafts, in the Butte mines, was done by man or animal power, but the demand for greater tonnage and the need for more improved methods of tramming the ore resulted in the installation of the compressed-air locomotive in a few mines. Some of the objections to animal haulage were thus eliminated, but this locomotive was not generally adopted, because of a number of limiting features. It was superseded by the electric trolley locomotive. The early types of trolley locomotives were not satisfactory from the operators' viewpoint, but they had many economic advantages and after a number of years, in which improvements were constantly made in the structural details, they became dependable, so that the use of animals for main haulage in the mines has now been practically abandoned. There are now operating in the Butte mines of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., 185 trolley-type locomotives, each of which has replaced five animals. It cost approximately $50 per month to keep an animal, hence the economies that resulted fully justified the expenditure of electrifying the haulage systems. The haulage conditions in this company's mines possess many advantageous features that arc not always found in underground mine workings. The drifts and crosscuts are large, approximately 5 ft. (1.5 m.) wide by 71/2 ft. (2.3 m.) high, and have curves of no less than 18 ft. (5.5 m.) radius; and the roadbeds of the drifts and crosscuts have a uniform grade of 0.5 per cent. toward the shaft, or in favor of the loaded trips. In all of the mines, except two, the track gage is 18 in. (45.7 cm.): and all tracks in the main haulageways are laid with 25-lb. (11.3 kg.) rails. The stations at the shaft are large, well-lighted, clean, and cool. The average temperature of the stations, however, is about 75" F. Krupp Polysius AG, FRG, in close cooperation with Prof. Dr. K. Schoenert, FRG have developed the principle of the high pressure grind- ing roll POLYCOM. The POLYCOM mill basically consists of two counter-rotating rolls of large diameter and relatively small width, one of which is fixed and the other moving in slide blocks. The pressure required for comminu- tion is applied via the sliding roll by a powerful hydraulic system. The comminution takes place between the rolls under high pressure in the bed of material by nipping and compacting. The top feed size-depending on the rolls diameter -may be as coarse as conventional secondary crusher feed and the product is a compacted cake containing a high amount of fines created by micro-cracking. The amount of fines depends on the pres- sure (grinding force) applied. Operating results show that even in wet griding circuits capacity increases at downstream connected grinding mills of up to 100010 can be accomplished with an interconnected POLYCOM machine and energy savings of up to 25070 may be achieved depending on application. POLYCOM can be used in existing grinding plants for low-cost upgrad- ing of capacities but also as an advanced alternative to conventional crush- ing and grinding equipment in open or closed circuit configuration. A single industrial size 2.8m roll diameter POLYCOM machine may be fed with top feed size of up to 200mm and produce a finish product as fine- grained as known from rod and ball mills but with less energy consumption. Meanwhile, the POLYCOM high pressure grinding roll has established itself world-wide in the cement industry and is now entering the mining industry. POLYCOM machines are currently designed in industrial standard sizes of 1.0m to 2.0m rolls diameter and drive units of up to 2400 kW. This paper includes: principles of high pressure grinding, main fea tures of the POLYCOM machine, results of tests on various materials including Australian gold and copper ores carried out at the POLYSIUS research centre in Germany. Some examples of industrial applications of high pressure grinding will also be presented.

LOCKE, Cambridge, Mass.-In this country, we have come to think that we should use smaller size of feed in our ball-mills. I will admit that a ball-mill is not comparable to a tube-mill, as conditions may not be the same, but there we have an unusual demonstration of the advantage of a coarser feed. Further investigation along this line is going to lead to some valuable results. The authors have overcome the difficulty of this coarse feed by taking out what I would call the difficult lumps, It is not clear from the paper whether many of these difficult lumps' may not be 'reduced portions of their grinding media. H. W. HARDINGE, New York, N. Y.-The idea is not exactly new because in 1911 they used the miner to reduce the finer material. We proceeded three or four years using many tons, about 15 tons. or nearly the same proportion of ore to grinding medium. Another thing to be taken into account is the hardness of the ore being ground. In South Africa, the transportation costs must be, taken into account. They are also making progress in the method of using tube-mills and ball-mills instead of stamps. Experiments are to be conducted with 10-ft. diameter mills there, with the object of increasing the mass action and agitation which, as has been demonstrated under different circumstances, increases the overall efficiency.

Development of the New York City Water Supply System The New York City water supply system serves a population of almost nine million, including residents in neighboring counties. Peak day demands on the system are currently running at about 70 m3/sec (about 1,600 mgd), which is significantly lower than in the 1990s. This trend of reducing demands over the past 25 years, which has been experienced in other major urban centers in the US, is mainly the result of conservation measures and increased cost consciousness on the part of water users. In the long term, demands are expected to once again follow an increasing trend with population growth, so that by the end of the planning horizon of these studies, the year2045, the peak day demand is expected to increase to about 85 m3/sec (2,000 mgd).The system is served largely by surface water sources, regulated by a system of 19reservoirs and three controlled lakes, which are connected to the City by a series of aqueducts, the longest of which is about 87 km (54 miles). The total storage in the sys-tem amounts to about 560 billion gallons, providing a system firm yield of about1300 mgd. The Delaware system provides about 50% of the City’s water, the Catskill about 40%, with the remaining 10% provided by the Croton. The system as a whole, which is shown on Figure 1, has been built up over the past 150 years, and is truly a marvel of engineering. The Catskill and Delaware aqueducts both discharge into Kensico Reservoir, which is a daily balancing reservoir located in Westchester County about 24 km(15 miles) north of the New York City line. The two aqueducts extend south for a further 14 miles to combine again at Hillview Reservoir in the Bronx, which provides hourly balancing storage for New York City system. The Croton aqueduct runs nearby as shown on Figure 2, but does not connect into the two reservoirs. From Hillview Reservoir the water is supplied to the city via three main distribution tunnels, known as City Tunnels 1, 2, and 3. City Tunnel No.1 was developed in the 1920s as part of the Catskill system. City Tunnel No. 2 followed in the 1960s as part of the Delaware system. City Tunnel No. 3 (CT3) is partly under construction and partly in operation, and is being implemented to permit the other distribution tunnels to be taken out of operation for the first time for inspection and maintenance. "Successful use of inert anodes should reduce the CO2 footprint in aluminum production. The search for a “holy grail” inert anode for metal electro-winning from constituent oxides using molten salt bath as an electrolytic medium is continuing. In this article we demonstrate the engineering approaches for the fabrication of intermetallic anodes, based on a quaternary Al-Ti-Cu-M (M:Ni, Fe) system for primary aluminium production. In particular, we examine the microstructural and electrochemical properties of alloys, based on the quaternary compositions. We explain the aspects of phase stability under anodic potential, which leads to the loss of anodic materials in the temperature range of 850-1050oC. The results are analysed in the context of oxidation reaction and formation of oxide layers which readily dissolve in the cryolite melt and prevent passivation. The paper also describes the conditions under which the reduction of aluminium at the graphite cathode occurs which also strongly depends on the molten salt chemistry for the nucleation of molten aluminium at the cathode.1. IntroductionOxygen-evolving inert anodes are an alternative to the conventional consumable carbon anodes for the production of primary aluminium. In this paper the materials selection criteria chosen for the engineering of anode is based on the understanding of the thermodynamic stabilities of aluminide intermetallic phases, some of which are formed and remained stable in fluoride melts. For example, the formation Al3Ti dispersed in aluminium metal via molten-fluoride flux reaction is well known in the context of aluminium casting and grain refining [1-3]. It is for this reason in our research we concentrated on the engineering of stable intermetallic phase mixture in the Al-Ti-Cu ternary system, shown in Figure 1 [4]. In this figure two compositions in the Al3-0.5zTi1-0.5zCuz family are shown with the substitution of 7 atomic % and 11 atomic % copper. However initial investigations showed that these two compositions were unsuitable due to the formation of low-temperature liquid (~540oC) and intermetallic phase, Al2Cu along the Al-Cu binary edge during solidification. The Al2Cu phase segregated along the boundaries of Al3Ti and Al5Ti2Cu, and dissolved away when electrolysis was carried out using these anodes above 800oC. The presence of consequential porosity in the anode material increased the corrosion of the alloy through local heating due to high current density at 0.8 A cm-2. The early tests were carried out with cryolite melts, shown in Figure 2, having 3 weight percent of Al2O3 in the bath at 850oC."

The first paper1 of this series described a technique of careful surface preparation by means of which reproducible results may be obtained from potential measurements of the behavior of tin in carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2. It then went on to establish the behavior of pure tin electrodes under these conditions and showed that the metal remains active at all times, though the steady potential attained after several hours decreases from 1.12† volts at a pH of 12.6 to 0.6 volts at a pH of 8.4. This behavior may serve as a norm with which all other data can be compared. In the second paper,2 small amounts of other anions were added to the carbonate solutions and the conclusion was reached that the common impurities encountered in alkaline materials packaged in tin do not increase corrosion. In fact, in some cases these anions may actually promote the formation of protective films. The present paper rounds out this survey by presenting data on the influence of cations added to the carbonate solutions, as well as the effect of alloy additions to the tin. In many cases the potential data are supplemented with weight-loss measurements. Information is also presented on the effects of some additional anions, the influence of gases above the electrolyte, the behavior of high-purity tin, and the effect of atmospheric oxidation on the corrosion resistance of the above-named alloys. Analysis of the entire body of data discloses some general rules applicable to corrosion in carbonate solutions. The experimental methods used are the same as those previously described. Experimental Data Cations.—The carbonates of the cations K+, Li+, NH4+, which are soluble, were studied in the same way as the anions, by adding 0.01 mol of the metal carbonate to one liter of 0.1 M sodium carbonate solution, pH 11.2, or to 0.1 M sodium bicarbonate, pH 8.4. The other metallic carbonates are only slightly soluble, of the order of 10-3 mols per liter or less, and the sodium carbonate solutions were saturated by adding excess reagent several days before the experiment, shaking frequently, and filtering just before use. The chemicals were c.p. grade in each case except the indium salt. This salt was prepared by solution of the metal in hydrochloric acid and precipitation by addition of Na2CO3. The first paper1 of this series described a technique of careful surface preparation by means of which reproducible results may be obtained from potential measurements of the behavior of tin in carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2. It then went on to establish the behavior of pure tin electrodes under these conditions and showed that the metal remains active at all times, though the steady potential attained after several hours decreases from 1.12† volts at a pH of 12.6 to 0.6 volts at a pH of 8.4. This behavior may serve as a norm with which all other data can be compared. In the second paper,2 small amounts of other anions were added to the carbonate solutions and the conclusion was reached that the common impurities encountered in alkaline materials packaged in tin do not increase corrosion. In fact, in some cases these anions may actually promote the formation of protective films. The present paper rounds out this survey by presenting data on the influence of cations added to the carbonate solutions, as well as the effect of alloy additions to the tin. In many cases the potential data are supplemented with weight-loss measurements. Information is also presented on the effects of some additional anions, the influence of gases above the electrolyte, the behavior of high-purity tin, and the effect of atmospheric oxidation on the corrosion resistance of the above-named alloys. Analysis of the entire body of data discloses some general rules applicable to corrosion in carbonate solutions. The experimental methods used are the same as those previously described. Experimental Data Cations.—The carbonates of the cations K+, Li+, NH4+, which are soluble, were studied in the same way as the anions, by adding 0.01 mol of the metal carbonate to one liter of 0.1 M sodium carbonate solution, pH 11.2, or to 0.1 M sodium bicarbonate, pH 8.4. The other metallic carbonates are only slightly soluble, of the order of 10-3 mols per liter or less, and the sodium carbonate solutions were saturated by adding excess reagent several days before the experiment, shaking frequently, and filtering just before use. The chemicals were c.p. grade in each case except the indium salt. This salt was prepared by solution of the metal in hydrochloric acid and precipitation by addition of Na2CO3. Wilshire SEVERAL recent investigations1-6 have shown that the strain, c, during transient and steady-state creep is well-represented by the expression: € = e0 + et(l - e-mt) + Esl [l] where Eo is the instantaneous strain on loading, ET the total transient strain, C, the steady creep rate! and m a constant relating to the rate of exhaustion of transient creep. However, it has been noted6 that deviations from this equation occur over the first 10 to 15 pct of the transient stage, when the creep rate, (. decreases more rapidly than is predicted by this equation. This rapid decrease has been attributed to a large change in work-hardening coefficient. It 1s widely accepted that steady-state creep results from a balance between the rate of strain hardcning h and the rate of recovery r (=-s(st) as: dE/dt = Es = r/h [2] Comparison of values obtained for h at the end of the initial extension and during steady creep suggests that h increases several fold during the transient stage. which has the effect of reducing the creep rate proportionally.7 To examine the dependence, on r and h, of the deformation behavior during transient and steady-state creep. a series of constant-stress creep tests was carried out at 413°C at 6000 psi using 70-30 a brass. Prelinlinary investigation showed that. with this material. the transient stage constituted a significant portion of the total creep life (-0.4tf. where tf is the time to fracture). The alloy. obtained from Metals Research Limited. was made from high-purity copper, 99.999 pct. and zinc. 99.99 pct. Heat treatment at 675°C for 4 1/2 gave a uniform grain size of 5 mm-1. Details of specimen preparation and creep testing procedures have been given previously.6 Values of h (?s/?E) were determined by measuring the instantaneous strain. ?E. which occurred on increasing the stress during creep by a small amount. ?s. Similarly. v (= -?s/ ?t) was derived from the incubation period. At, after a small decrease in stress.' Several values of v and h were obtained throughout duplicate creep tests. using different stress increments in the range 300 to 800 psi. The accuracy with which Eq. [I] represents the present creep curves was established by determining the best value of the constants Es, Et, m , and 6, using a digital computer program based essentially on the graphical solution for this equation devised by Conway and Mullikan.9 About 40 strain/time readings were taken during transient and steady-state creep. Over most of the creep curve, the average difference between the measured reading and the calculated strain at the appropriate time was less than 0.0001. However.

Longwall management, regular shield maintenance, and evaluation of ground control problems can be performed using real-time shield monitoring program. Based on real-time shield pressure data, evaluation of intensity and interval of periodic weighting, estimation of time-dependent pressure increase and the effects of geologic anomalies can be obtained. In this study, full-face shield pressure data of over 457 m (1,500 feet) of face advancement is analyzed to evaluate shield response in the presence of surface lineaments, floor undulations, and multiple main roofs. Shield pressure increase due to web cutting is also correlated with setting pressure during periodic weighting and normal time. In addition, time-dependent pressure increase rate on Sundays and holidays is also correlated with time average pressure and the location of previous periodic weighting.

In January 2001, French and Italian governments signed an agreement for the construction of a new Lyon-Turin railway line. This project includes a tunnel of 53.1 km length and a maximum of 2500 m overburden to be designed for a reference speed of220 km/h. The tunnel crosses major part of the West Alpine geological formations, which are very complex and contrasted in terms of the nature of rocks and the mechanical and hydrogeological conditions. In addition to the twin single-track tubes, numerous intermediary shafts, security station and intervention sites and cross passages should be built to respond to the security, operational and construction requirements. This paper describes the results of the preliminary engineering design and multiple challenges of this very long and deep railway tunnel.

Synthesis report on a project carried out under the EC-funded BRITE-EURAM programme. A large deposit in Spain and several smaller ones in Greece and Sweden were investigated. Beneficiation testwork, including the development of an innovative wet circuit, was undertaken in Italy. The Spanish Ilustracion deposit lies occurs in thin, white layers throughout a zone 35-40 m thick and 1.5 km long, in laminated calcsilicates. Total resources of more than 100 000 000 t include proven open-pittable reserves of 4 500 000 t averaging 35% wollastonite. The beneficiated product is suitable for various applications, including ceramics. The Swedish and Greek marble-hosted skarn deposits include Albatross, with 2 500 000 t of reserves at 30% wollastonite, and Panorama, with reserves estimated at more than 700 000 t

This paper documents a field survey using long-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry at the Palabora open-pit mine, South Africa, for multi-scale characterization of rock mass discontinuities. Stereomodels covering the entire mine were generated based on photographs taken from a distance of 1600m across the pit, using a series of f=20-400mm lenses. Details on the methodology used and its accuracy are discussed. Preliminary results on discontinuity orientation, persistence and intensity are presented, highlighting the effect of observation scale. The potential uses of long-range terrestrial digital photogrammetry in open-pit mine and large natural rock slope environments is emphasized. The use of an f=400mm lens from distances larger than 1.5km may represent an important step forward in the geotechnical characterization of inaccessible remote rock faces.

Sylvite at Boulby is mined 1 140 m beneath the sea and the mine suffers from the influx of water. This is of two kinds: persistent flows originating in the Sherwood Sandstone aquifer and entering the evaporite sequence through fractures in the intervening mudstone, and impersistent flows which are transient in nature and of uncertain origin. Water from the overlying sandstone has become enriched with NaCl and large amounts of KCl and some Mg and Br have been added by interaction with the evaporites. Waters from the transient flows are isotopically distinct from those in the Sherwood Sandstone, being enriched in H and O. They are also saturated with respect to halite and sylvite, but have higher K/Na than the persistent flows and are much more enriched in Mg and Br
