This paper discusses the actual recovery and installation of a longwall in a bituminous coal mine in western Pennsylvania. The coal bed mined is in the Lower Freeport seam, which averaged 1.07 m (42 in.) in height locally. Drainage from the mine is about 13.25 ML/day (3.5 million gal per day) of water. This water deteriorates the mine's predominately fire clay bottom making it extremely difficult to move equipment. Support removal is accomplilshed by pulling the 5.44 t (6 st) shields out under their own hydraulic power and transporting them by track 8.05 km (5 miles) to the next longwall panel. This paper also discusses the changes that will be made to aid in the succeeding longwall recoveries and installations.

EVEN though most of the program of the joint meeting at Easton, Pa., on Oct. 30 to Nov. 1. was devoted to the interests of combustion engineers rather than to coal-mining engineers, nevertheless the A.I.M.E. Coal Division was well represented, with 83, or close to one third of those in attendance giving this as their affiliation. The fuels division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers had 108 representatives, and an equal number reported no society affiliation. Added to the men's total registration was that of some twenty ladies so the total attendance was in the neighborhood of 325, exceeding that of the last two joint meetings, at Birmingham and Columbus, and equaling the 1938 crowd at Chicago.

The Kilmar dolomitic magnesite deposit~ in sourhwesr Quebec lie in Grenville Province sedimentary rocks that strike north and dip steeply west. The sediments comprise quartzitic, carbonate and argillaceous members. The middle or carbonate member hosts the magnesite and, like the two other members, has been intensely mewmorphosed. Magnesite occurs as lenticular shaped zones of altered limestone and is mixed with 5 to 30% dolomite crystals. Diopside, serpentine and mica are common accessory minerals. Magnesite appears to have formed from merasomarism of all or part of the carbonate member due to intrusion of hot magnesia-rich solutions. Magnesite is mined from a 490 m vertical shaf1 and is milled and burned into clinkers, which then are shipped 10 pyroprocessing industries around the world.

The Gulf Coast Region has been the center of extensive lignite exploration and development activity in the past 10 years. Currently, 27.2 Mt (30 million st) of lignite are mined annually, the majority of which is uncovered by large walking draglines. Projections indicate that production could reach 125 Mt (138 million st) by 1990. As mining moves to deeper depths, removal of overburden becomes the decisive factor in mine planning and cost. The geology of a region plays a key role in the selection of an overburden removal system. While alternate stripping methods must be analyzed to determine the most economical and operationally sound method, so far bucketwheel excavator systems seem to be the best method for removing large volumes of soft, unconsolidated material that is found at projected mining depths in the Gulf Coast region. Geology of Gulf Coast Lignites Extent Distribution of the principal tertiary lignite-bearing deposits in the Gulf Coast Lignite province extend from the Texas-Mexico border to the Alabama-Georgia state line (Fig. 1). The lignite-bearing strata includes portions of eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lignites occur primarily in the Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson groups in the Gulf Coast. The uppermost strata of the Midway group in Mississippi and Alabama also contain significant lignite resources. Reserves Commercial lignite seams in the Gulf Coast Lignite province range from 0.6-3 m (2-10 ft) in thickness. The estimated lignite resources throughout the Gulf Coast in seams greater than 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and up to 61 m (200 ft) in depth currently are estimated at 32 Gt (35 billion st). Table 1 shows these resources by state. Quality Lignite quality can vary within individual mining areas and seams. However, trends in quality occur because of the depositional environment, age, and west-to-east geographical location. Better quality lignites occur in the Wilcox group in Texas and Louisiana. Poorer quality lignites occur in the northern regions of the Wilcox group and those of the geologically younger Claiborne and Jackson groups. Environmental Conditions Gulf Coast province environmental conditions are ideal for successful mine reclamation. The lignite occurs in flat to moderately rolling terrain, a topography easily reproduced from the spoil dumps or spoil rows developed during the mining operation. High to moderate rainfall facilitates rapid revegetation. Evidence from current mine reclamation programs and ongoing test plot studies indicate that mined lands can be reclaimed to reach premining productivities. Sometimes productivities are even greater than that of premining conditions. The results of an experimental investigation into the possible use of medium energy acoustic fields (130 to 140 dB) to precipitate 1 to 10 micron particles is presented. The aerosol was produced with a LeMer generator using oleic acid and nitrogen. The sound field was a sinusoidal standing wave field in an acrylic tube, with light transmission data used for concentration determination. The results showed collection efficiencies of up to 80% on 2 micron particles with a residence time of 11.8 seconds at a sound pressure level of 139 dB re 2x10-5 N/m2. A discussion of the possible turbulent mechanism is made, as well as review and comparison with others? work.

The REL of 1 mg/m3 for respirable coal mine dust does not assure a zero risk for the development of occupational respiratory diseases among all miners exposed during a full working lifetime. Consequently, a medical screening and surveillance program that includes initial and periodic chest X-rays and spirometric examinations is important for the early detection of disease and the prevention of "material impairment of health or functional capacity" [30 USC 8 11(a)(6)(A)]. The medical screening and surveillance program is also useful for disease surveillance, which includes the tracking trends, the setting of prevention and intervention priorities, and the assessment of prevention and intervention efforts. NIOSH encourages both underground and surface coal miners to participate in the medical screening and surveillance program.

Biohydrometallurgica1 processes in the areas of coal desulfurization (Hoffman, M.R., et al., 1981) and recovery of metals from metal sulfide ores (Lundgren, D.G. and Malouf E.E., 1983) are well known. In addition other areas of potential interest to the mining industries have been outlined (Spisak, J.F., 1979). For instance, scientists involved in this interdisciplinary field have endeavored to apply microorganisms to the problem of effluent sulfate disposal. This chapter assesses the feasibility of utilizing a particular two stage anaerobic microbial process to convert effluent sulfate to orthorhombic sulfur. Strong emphasis is given to the possibility of substituting this bioprocess for alternative gypsum synthesis and disposal methodologies commonly practiced by companies which emphasize sulfuric acid or ammonium sulfate leaching processes.

THE Blueberry mine is about 10 miles west of Ishpeming, Marquette County, Michigan. The property consists of about 2000 acres in sets. 3, 4 and 5, T. 47, N.R. 28W. and sets. 32, 33 and 34, T. 48, N.R. 28W., and, excepting one intervening 80-acre tract, contains the iron formation for a length of about 2 1/4 miles. The property is traversed by State Highway M-28 and is served by three railways, the Chicago & Northwestern, the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic, and the Lake Superior & Ishpeming. The Northwestern transports the ore to a dock at Escanaba; the other railways, to Mar¬quette. Ore for Chicago goes via Escanaba and that for Lower Lake ports, as Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo, via Marquette.

Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific region differ in some points of geologic features from those of the United States. The deposits distribute along old or active island arcs and are generally younger in age (1-16 m.y. B.P.). In Japan, however, no typical porphyry copper deposits are yet reported, though the geological situation of Japanese islands is similar to that of the southwestern Pacific. Fluid inclusions in some porphyry copper deposits In the southwestern Pacific region and those in igneous rocks genetically related to the ore deposits In Japan have been studied, and the genesis of ore-forming fluids from igneous rocks are discussed. From the results, the possibility of finding porphyry copper-type mineralization in Japan are considered.

After half a million meters drilled with Wassara we are now confident that ITH hammers powered with simple water will become an established product for production drilling. Today four drill rigs in LKAB Malmberget equipped with Wassara drill about 25 000 m per month of 4 1/2" holes. In Kidd Creek, Canada, Was sara is used for production drilling in stopes with good results. The first Wassara 6" hammer has drilled a 36 meter long, completely straight horizontal cut hole for drifting in the LKAB Malmberget Mine. Main advantages are about doubled penetration rate, very good air quality and improved hole cleaning which facilitates stabilized drilling. Disadvantages are resistance to new technology and, in some cases, the increased use of water.

Oil Exploration Companies are primarily interested in how much oil or gas is present in the rocks in an area in which an exploratory well is drilled. The solution of this problem requires a combined effort on the part of the petroleum geologists, drilling engineers, logging and drilling contractors. To help in'explaining how the drilling and evaluation is earried out the paper has been divided into two sertions, one titled Drilling which is presented by Mr. P.H.J.-Hammett and the seeond titled Evaluation which is presented by Mr. R.M.L. Elliott. A typical Perth Basin Well has been chosen as art example for this presentation. In Figure 1A is shown the type of sandstone and shale sequence encountered in this area.

Professor A.M. Gaudin and his students at MIT were dedicated to understanding the fundamentals of mineral processing and as a consequence were constantly searching for better quantatative descriptions of size reduction, liberation and mineral separations. I have had the good fortune of meeting Professor Gaudin and working with many the modeling pioneers who followed him. I have observed first hand the refinement of mineral processing models as they increased in realisticness moving up the steps of the pyramid (see figure below) from pure empiricism to the current pinacle of physics based models. During this journey our industry benefited significanbtly as model prediction errors were reduced from ± 20% to ± 1%. Unit operation and plant simulations improved in accuracy and speed of calculations.

J. M. TIPPETT? Colorado Springs, Co1o.-There are several points which offer ground for discussion, although the authors' indicated results leave small chance for argument. Under classification of the ores as they come to the mill, it will be noted that these are classified according to their lime contents. In previous years the classification was based upon sulfur contents, CaO not being considered; class A would be called the oxidized ore and class B the sulfides. Classification according to CaO is the first public indication that a decided change in the ore has necessitated improved methods of treatment. The very serious effect that CaO, even in small quantities, has upon extraction has been noted for some years.

Industry and regulatory agencies have requested guidance on safe blasting near transmission pipelines. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and Amax Coal Co. studied surface coal mine overburden blasting near four steel and one PVC pipeline of 15 to 51 cm-diam (6-20 in.-diam), monitoring vibration, strain and pressure. Unlike tests of small blasts simulating construction, these were up to 1 t (2200lbs) per delay in 31-cm (12-in.) blastholes. Worst-case comparisons showed that 12.7 cm/sec (5 in./s) blasting vibrations produced strains about one fourth that of pressurization and 10% to 18% of the ultimate tensile strength. No failures occurred from blasting as close as 15 m (50 ft), which produced vibrations over 60 cm/sec (24 in./s).

The cooling water system for the Seabrook Nuclear Station involves 10.25 Km (33,623 ft.) of 6.7 m (22 ft.) OD hard rock tunnels, over one third of which is under and terminating over 1.6 Km (a mile) out in the Atlantic Ocean. The major excavation is accomplished by two TBM's concurrently driving the intake and discharge tunnels which by mid-January, 1981, completed 92% of the excavation. This paper presents the case history of the excavation work and describes a computer program developed to evaluate major activities of TBM excavation on a shift-by-shift basis. Details and summaries of the production efforts are computer plotted in different forms to facilitate the evaluation of production performance, trouble spots and trends.
