Stable Nitroxyl polymers, such as poly (2,2,6,6-tetramenthyl-1-piperidinyloxy-4-yl methacrylate) (PTMA), are known to be effective as cathode active materials for lithium rechargeable betteries.The nitroxide radicals displayed a reversible and very rapid redox performances.We present a new synthesized method to get PTMA powder, then a doctor-blading method was used to prepare the PTMA composite electrodes, enabling successful production of homogeneous electrodes. It was characterized through FT-IR and SEM methods.The organic radical battery consists of lithium metal anode and PTMA cathode with an active material content of 65wt%.The best performance is achieved with a thin cathode that shows nearly 100% utilization of the active material (111mAh/g) at 0.1C.Through the electrochemical tests, it was found that there was a stable plateau at 3.5V while discharging. Besides, the cycling stability and rate capability were measured in detail. Although they showed a certain quantity of irreversible capacity on the first cycle, the capacity stabilized after the second cycle.

The novel spouted-bed electrode (SBE) is a cathode system where copper is deposited at a high current density in a moving bed of copper particles. Preliminary results on the deposition of copper from acidic sulfate electrolytes using this novel cathode system were described during Copper '95 conference. Despite a high current density, the electrical energy consumption was equal to or lower than that in the conventional electrowinning. The present paper describes more investigations on SBE. The SBE consists of copper particles with approximately 1 mm diameter onto which copper is deposited from acidic sulfate electrolyte whose composition is similar to conventional electrowinning. Three types of anodes were used in conjunction with the spouted-bed cathode, namely, DSA anode for oxygen evolution, and two novel anodes. One anode is less expensive than DSA; however it showed much promise in energy consumption. At a superficial current density of 2200 A/m2, the energy consumption was around 1.0 kWh/kg copper. The residual pores in pressed and sintered parts reduce values such as the magnetic permeability but service experience extended over a number [ ] of years has proven beyond doubt that in many instances the lower density of powder parts is not prohibitive to their use m replacement of machined magnetic parts The. magnetic requirements for pole shoes particularly the permeability, vary within wide limits, especially with the relative size of the air gap in the finished assembly. However the ash, particularly in the smaller fractions, was found to be higher due to the previously mentioned friable nature of contaminant material. Following evaluation of this additional information, the proposed washery design was reconsidered. Three basic process schemes were examined. 1. A jig with two-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for treatment of three different size ranges. 2. A heavy medium vessel, two-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for the different size fractions. 3. A jig for initial treatment of the total feed (that is all sizes) with single-stage heavy medium cyclones and spirals for rewashing of the intermediate and smaller size Fractions.

Toxic gases produced by the detonation of six explosives were measured in an underground hardrock metal mine during mining operations. The explosives included two semi-gelatin dynamites, three slurry explosives, and an ammonium nitrate, fuel-oil/ammonia dynamite combination. Explosives were detonated at the face of a drift and toxic gases produced by the detonation were trapped at the end of the drift by a bulkhead located a short distance away from the face. Toxic gas concentrations were then measured with direct readout instruments and together with the containment volume, the toxic gas volumes per mass of explosive were calculated. Toxic gas measurements were found in the following ranges (ft3/1bm): NO, 0.0100-0.035; N02, 0.003-0.019; CO, 0.08-0.30; SO2, 0.00-0.05; and CO2, 0.7-1.8. Results showed that toxic gas production (ft3/lbm) correlated with the densities (kg/m3) and energy densities (kJ/kg) of the explosives tested.

Un objetivo de seguridad y calidad en los moldes de la colada continua de Siderar fue la de tener un menisco estable y controlado. A lo largo de los distintos periodos de inversiones y mejoras, el control de nivel de Siderar logro como objetivo contener su variación de nivel de acero en el molde en un rango de variación menor a +/-2 mm y con una velocidad de cambio inferior a 1,5 m/segundos. Esta etapa trajo una relativa mejora en los aspectos mencionados (calidad y continuidad operativa) pero el hecho de tener como sistema de medición de nivel un sistema radiactivo (fuente Co60 y contador de centelleo) mantenía serias limitaciones en ambos rubros dado que este sistema no diferencia la interface escoria /polvo colador con el menisco de acero. Este trabajo tratará de mostrar y contar las tareas de desarrollo y aplicación de esta nueva tecnología, hoy vigente en la nueva Colada Continua N° 2 (CCD2) y en etapa de puesta en marcha de la CCD1.

THE PROPERTY of the Lamaque Mining Company, Limited, ?is located in the Town of Bourlamaque, seventy miles east of Noranda, in Bourlamaque township, Abitrbi county, north western Quebec. Gold production commenced at Lamaque in April, 1935, with an initial mill capacity of 250 tons per day. The capacity was doubled in November of the same year, and in December, 1937, it further increased to 1,200 tons per day. During the war years the mill operated at a reduced tonnage, but in 1951 milling units were added along with complementary crushing and shop facilities to bring the capacity to 1,500 tons per day. Finally, in 1953, the capacity was raised to 2,000 tons per day, which rate is being maintained at the present time. The total production at Lamaque from April 2nd, 1935, to December 31st, 1956, has been 9,168,901 tons of ore from which 2,208,168 ounces of gold was recovered. The total value of this production , excluding E.G. M.À.*, was $77,869,653.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently completed phase 1 of a mapping effort that makes the United States the first nation to systematically acquire image maps of its underwater lands. In 1984, the USGS, as part of its mission to map and characterize the resources of the Federal lands, began a mapping effort in the newly proclaimed Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The goal was to provide sonar image maps of this frontier area within 10 years. The mapping program is on schedule, with two-thirds of the EEZ sea floor, approximately 2 million square nautical miles, happed in 7 years. The deep water EEZ (depth greater than 200 m) around the 50 states is now complete except for the North Slope of Alaska, where ice precludes our surveying with a surface ship. Phase 2 of the EEZ mapping effort will begin in 1994, focusing on the American Flag islands of the western Pacific. Approximately 1 million square nautical miles of sea floor remain to be mapped around the islands.

The Manapouri Power Station, commisioned in 1969, is located in Fiordland National Park in the South Island of New Zealand. It is the country’s largest hydro power scheme and can generate 700MW of electricity. The power station utilizes the hydraulic head of Lake Manapouri, using an underground power station and a 10 km-long tailrace tunnel was constructed by drill-and-blast to allow discharge to Doubtful Sound. Power generation fell short of expectations due to higher than expected friction in the tailrace system. To remedy this a second tailrace tunnel was constructed between June 1998and May 2002. It consisted of a 10 m diameter, 10 km long tunnel in predominately gneissic rock and was excavated using an Atlas Copco Robbins TBM. High water inflows, Owner/Contractor production incentives and a major claim settlement were handled during the 5 1/4 year project. This paper discusses TBM advance rates, utilization factors that increased in the second half of the project plus an innovative method for sealing Tunnel 1 to construct the bifurcation.

The US Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture (SCJV) are working on a production-scale, in situ copper recovery project in Arizona. The research is being conducted at the Santa Cruz site, located 11.2 km (7 miles) west of Casa Grande, AZ (Fig. 1). Santa Cruz is a 1.36-Gt (1.5 billion st) porphyry deposit averaging 0.6% Cu, of which 65% is oxidized, concealed beneath post-mineral alluvium at depths of 365-914 m (1500-3000 ft). The Bureau and the SCJV will evaluate in situ mining as a method for extracting copper from this previously unmined deposit. Research objectives of the Santa Cruz project are: - to demonstrate that an in situ research test can be operated in an environmentally acceptable manner ; and * to operate an in situ well pattern long enough to develop information on copper recovery and economic feasibility data. In situ mining of copper from undisturbed deposits has not been attempted commercially. There are several potential advantages with in situ mining: less exposure of miners to hazards, lower pital costs for the mine and plant and lower operating costs. In addition, there are no pits, dumps or tailings, which means less environmental impact.

Removal of As(III) and As(V) in Aqueous Solution There are toxic arsenical species such as As(III) and As(V), and arsenious species have specially strong toxicity. The strong toxicity causes contamination of groundwater and water pollution for the semiconductor production process. This study is concerned with the removal of As(III) and As(V) with various kinds of Mg/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) containing CO32-, SO42-, Cl- and NO3- as interlayer anionic species. The anion exchange property is different from the kind of layered double hydroxides and the Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is superior in the anion exchange property of As(III) and As(V) due to the nature of nitrate ion existing in the interlayer. The pH condition suitable for As(V) removal is 7.1 or more. If the initial conditions such as 10mg/dm3 of As(V) concentration, 7.1 of pH, 1 m3 of amount of solution and 99 per cent of removal are fixed, the required amount of Mg-Al-NO3-LDH is 0.27kg for two step-batch operations. The As(III) is suitable to oxidize to As(V) before the removal processing.

When a rock particle is subjected to an external force, internal stresses and deformations are experienced by the particle. Assuming that the breakage of a rock is mainly due to tensile stresses generated by the action of a pair of concentrated loads, F, directed in compression towards the loading points at the shortest distance, as illustrated in Fig. 1, the stress and deformation experienced by a particle of irregular shape can be determined with the aid of the theory of elasticity. According to the photoelastic experiments made by one of the present authors,&apos; the stress states in a rock particle of irregular shape are quite similar to that of an inscribed sphere of diameter x, as indicated in Fig. 1, but accompanied by the faint stresses, in the vicinity of the particle outside of the inscribed sphere. Therefore, the stress components in an irregularly shaped particle can be estimated by referring to stress components in a sphere. Applying polar spherical coordinates to an elastic spherical body, as shown in Fig. 1, the stress components are all expressed as multiples of F /x2 and more or less influenced by the loading angle and Poisson&apos;s number m. The Devil?s Slide portion of Highway 1 between Pacifica and Montara is often closed due to the instability of the adjacent slopes. Following many years of public input and careful evaluation of alternatives, Devil?s Slide will be by-passed via two inland tunnels, providing a safe, dependable highway between Pacifica and Montara. For the twin tunnels, each 9m diameter tube will accommodate only one traffic lane. Each tunnel tube will accommodate a 3.6 meter roadway, 0.6 meter and 2.4 meter inside and outside shoulders respectively, and 1.2 meter walkways on each side. Cross passages will connect the bores at about 120 meter intervals and jet fans will provide tunnel ventilation. The twin tunnels are approximately 1,250 meter long and 9 meter wide. Excavation will progress from south to north using tunneling techniques that rely on inherent rock strength for support known as the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM). Both tunnels will be excavated at the same time, one tunnel face approximately 40 meters ahead of the other. Staggering the tunnels reduces the likelihood of damage from blasting in alternate tunnels. The work schedule is 24 hours a day, 7 days a week resulting in a 24-month timetable to break through to the north portal.

Federal regulations require that refuge alternatives (RAs) be located within 305 m (1,000 ft) of the working face and spaced at one-hour travel distances in the outby area in underground coal mines, in the event that miners cannot escape during a disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration mandates that RAs provide safe shelter and livable conditions for a minimum of 96 hours while maintaining the apparent temperature below 35 °C (95 °F). The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health used a validated thermal simulation model to examine the mechanisms of heat loss from an RA to the ambient mine and the effect of mine strata composition on the final internal dry bulb temperature (DBT) for a mobile tent-type RA. The results of these studies show that 51 percent of the heat loss from the RA to the ambient mine is due to radiation and 31 percent to conduction. Three mine width and height configurations and four mine strata compositions were examined. The final DBT inside the RA after 96 hours varied by less than 1 °C (1.8 °F) for the three mine width/height configurations and by less than 2 °C (3.6 °F) for the four mine strata compositions.

Major problems facing the development of coal and gas resources of the Hartshorne Coalbeds include the complex distribution of minable and unminable coal, high methane content and bed pressure, faulting, variations in degree of dip, presence of natural gas fields in associated sandstones, and legal problems, caused by local geologic characteris- tics, in identifying gas origin. This Bureau of Mines study provides pertinent geologic information for long-range planning of subsurface coal and gas production from the Hartshorne Coalbeds. Pittsburg, Coal, Hughes, and Atoka Counties, OK, have approximately 1 billion metric tons (1.1 billion short tons) of Hartshorne coal in place. The methane resource of Hartshorne Coalbeds is estimated at 9.2 billion m3 (325 billion ft3) and varies with overburden and rank, These estimates were compiled from gas well density logs, coal-core data, out- crop measurements, abandoned mine maps, and the literature. The Hartshorne Coalbeds represent a valuable coal and gas resource which at present is contributing nothing to coal and gas production. This report discusses potential problems and serves as a reference for future exploration and development work. Recognition of these potential geologically related problems prior to development of this basin will reduce hazards and allow for an economic recovery of these resources.

When the paper "Operations at the Greenvale Nickel Project Mine and Refinery" was delivered at the 1st International Laterite Symposium in February 1979, the Yabulu Caron plant had been operating for four years and production had just stabilized. The design had been based closely on the Caron plant at Nicaro, Cuba, built in 1944, also by Freeport. Yabulu had 10 Herreshoff ore roasters and production in 1978 was 18,682 tonne nickel as impure oxide sinter and 763 tonne cobalt in a mixed sulphide with a cobalt to nickel ratio of 1 :2.5. In the 25 years since the 1st Symposium, two more roasters have been added, but dry ore processing rate has remained relatively unchanged at 2.4M Uyr to allow a lower feed rate per roaster with associated higher recovery. The ore source has changed from the domestic Greenvale mine to imports from New Caledonia, Indonesia and the Philippines. Nickel production between 1978 and 2003 has risen by 67%, cobalt has risen by 146% and the products have changed to high purity nickel compacts and "ChemGrade" cobalt salt. The molten salts M2S2O7and MHSO4, the binary molten salt systems M2S2O7-MHSO4and the molten salt-gas systems M2S2O7-V2O5and M2S2O7-M2SO4-V2O5(M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) in O2, SO2and Ar atmospheres have been investigated by thermal methods like calorimetry, Differential Enthalpic Analysis (DEA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Fundamental thermodynamic data like temperatures and molar heats of solid-solid transition and fusion, phase diagrams, heat capacities of solids and liquids, heat of mixing, and heats of complex formation have been obtained and are reviewed here. Also EPR spectroscopic evidence of V(IV) complexes and their structure are reported and the results are discussed in relation to the mechanism of SO2oxidation by V2O5based industrial catalysts. The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus, thiooxidans, and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uranium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H2O2. Inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.24 mM H2O2, and growth was inhibited after 6 hours exposure to 2.06 mM H2O2. Higher concentrations of H2O2 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface.
