To study the preparation process of an earthquake, we should get closer to the hypocentre. In co-operation with ISS International, we had an experimental field (~200 m x~200 m) without dykes and faults in a South African deep gold mine. We have monitored more than 20,000 seismic events (M<2) with borehole tri-axial accelerometers. We used a data acquisition system with 15 kHz sampling and 120-dB dynamic range. In a remnant area at a distance of 100?200 m, an earthquake sequence associated with an M~2 event occurred. Significant changes in seismic parameters such as stress drop, b-value, energy index were observed associated with the sequence. We installed Ishii?s borehole strain meters and could monitor as large a strain change as 10-4associated with mining. However, sampling was only 4 times per hour and 12 bit A/D. A distance from the M2 sequence was ~100 m, being not close enough. Therefore, we found another field with several crosscut tunnels excavated across a fault where an M=2-3 event is expected. We installed the strain meter within several metres of the fault to monitor both shear and normal strains on the fault. The strains are continuously digitized with a 24-bit 25-Hz A/D conversion. The Earth Tide (10-8)is clearly detected. Seismicity induced by longwall mining can be compared to earthquake swarm induced by fluid intrusion to vertical dykes. We also found a decrease in energy index in the source area of M>5events a few days before the major events. INTRODUCTION THE electrical system associated with the mining development of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, at Flin Flon, Manitoba, may be conveniently divided into three main parts, namely, the Island Falls power plant, the transmission line, and the distribution systems at the mine and metallurgical plants. For a description of the Island Falls power plant and the transmission line, the reader is referred to the paper, to be presented at this meeting, by R. W. Davis and M.F. Huffaker (1). The transmission line and sectionalizing combinations are shown diagrammatically in Figure 1. The present paper deals with the distribution systems at the Flin Flon mine and metallurgical plants. THE FLIN FLON DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM In the high-tension sub-station at Flin Flon, each incoming 110 kv. line is provided with manually operated, gang-type disconnecting switches. Each line is connected to Canadian General Electric type F.H.K. 39-60B-F.2 T.P.S.T. 110 kv. 400 amp. oil circuit breakers, each provided with M.K.4 centrifugal motor-operated closing mechanism. Gang-type disconnecting switches are installed on each side of incoming line breakers, and a complete ring bus system is formed through station tie breaker, which is&apos; further provided with gang-type disconnecting switches on either side. The?bus tie breaker is of Canadian Westinghouse design, type G.22B, 110 kv., 400-amp., solenoid-operated. All three breakers are provided with bushing-type current transformers, and the two line breakers are further equipped with bushing-type potential devices. Oxide film lightning arresters (121 kv.) are installed on each incoming line and are located outside the station. Each line is further provided with interlocked gang-operated ground disconnecting switches. All disconnecting switches are mechanically connected to auxiliary switches, which provide pilot service to indicating lamps in the remote-control room, located in a separate building.

"A 500m3 flotation cell was commissioned during 2014 at the Kevitsa Mine in northern Finland working as the first rougher in the copper flotation circuit. Treating around 850tph with an average grade of 0.3% Cu, the TankCell® e500 has run with an average copper recovery of 71% and an average enrichment ratio of 50 during early optimization test work. In addition the cell has proved to be very energy efficient, being operating with a specific energy of around 0.4kW/m3 under production conditions.A review of the installation and operation of the TankCell® e500 at Kevitsa will be presented. Metallurgical performance of the cell during the operating period will be discussed on the basis of on-line analysis and the metallurgical samples collected during early optimization campaigns.IntroductionThe past three decades have seen a rapid increase in the size of mechanical flotation cells. This has been largely driven by demand from the copper industry to process larger volumes of material due to combination of declining head grades and the desire to benefit from the economies of scale (Lynch, Harbort and Nelson 2010). During this period Outotec has been at the forefront of development of large flotation technology with an enviable scale-up track record; 100m3 (1995), 160m3 (1997), 200m3 (2002), 300m3 (2007), 500m3 (2012) to the largest commercially available cell at 630m3 in 2013. This scale-up methodology has been developed, tested and validated (Elgueta et al., 2009; Coleman & Dixon, 2010) by the large installation base of cells in the 300m3 size class operating (over 400). The learning from large cell operation are then reviewed and incorporated back into new designs and scale-up practices (Murphy, Miettinen, and Yanez, 2014)."

"Sam Goosly prospect, 22 miles southeast of Houston, B.C., was discovered in 1967 through geochemical reconnaissance. Soil sampling interpreted with respect to an east-to-west ice movement led to drilling targets.Mineralization is in a window of rocks thought to be Hazelton Group surrounded by Tertiary volcanic rocks and intruded by two stocks separated by about one mile. A westerly quartz monzonite stock is dated 61.1 m.y. and an easterly gabbro-monzonite complex is dated 52.5 m.y. The Tertiary volcanics are trachyandesites shown by the B.C. Department of Mines and Petroleum Resources to be in part extrusive equivalents of the gabbro, and they overlie Hazelton rocks uncomformably. Copper-molybdenum mineralization is sparsely developed in the westerly stock. Silver-copper mineralization forms an elongate west-dipping slab between the stocks in Hazelton rocks, which are continuously pyritized. The gabbro stock is not mineralized, but some dikes related to it are slightly so. Tertiary rocks are pyritized, but are not known to carry copper-silver mineralization. Hazelton rocks are divided into a lower conglomerate, an intermediate pyroclastic unit and an upper mainly sedimentary unit. They form a west-facing homocline. Coppersilver mineralization resides in the pyroclastic unit, mainly in a massive dust tuff through which are lenticular units of lapilli tuff. Well-mineralized rock is typically a breccia of light fragments in a dark chlorite-sulphide matrix. Sulphides are pyrite, chakopyrite and locally pyrrhotite, with very minor tetrahedrite, s phalerite and other sulphosalts. Rock alteration is predominantly a pervasive pyrite-sericite type, with widespread tourmaline, scorzalite, gypsum, ankerite and traces of fluorite. The most evident control of the copper-silver mineralization is the gross parallelism, over a strike length of 1.5 miles, to Hazelton strata, particularly a massive dust .tuff unit. In detail, mineralization crosscuts bedding and there is no appreciable banding within sulphides . A strictly syngenetic origin is untenable, but some initial concentration in a volcanogenic environment with subsequent modification by thermal processes seems likely."

Froth flotation is widely used for upgrading of ores and other materials. Efficiency of flotation depends on many parameters, including type, chemical structure and dose of flotation reagents. Selection of a proper frother in flotation depends on the material used, necessary dose of frother and its selectivity. The selectivity of flotation can be characterized by proper separation factors and indices. In this paper separation selectivity and power of frothers were evaluated basing on separation data for a given material and frother, plotted as the recovery of the useful component in the concentrate versus the recovery of the remaining components in the tailing. Such a plot is called the Fuerstenau upgrading curve. The selectivity was defined as the location of the whole upgrading curve in relation to no and ideal separation lines, expressed on the scale from 50 (no separation) to 100% (ideal separation). In turn, the flotation power was defined as the dose of frother to reach a certain upgrading level at which recoveries of the useful and unwanted components are equal. The power and selectivity of frothers were determined for the Kupferschiefer stratiform copper ore floated in the presence of a fixed amount of xanthate and varying doses of frothers using a laboratory flotation machine. Basing on the separation results for different poly(propylene glycol) (CnH2n+1O(C3H6O)mH, CnPm) and poly(ethylene glycol) (CnH2n+1O(C2H4O)mH, CnEm) alkyl ethers, it was found that the concentrate yield and recovery of copper as the useful component in the concentrate were greatly influenced by the type and dose of frother. However, the same results plotted in the form of the Fuerstenau upgrading curve clearly indicated that the selectivity of frothers was similar, while their power was different. It proves that both selectivity and power of frothers are useful parameters for characterizing flotation systems.

Tunnel excavation while mining is not often performed in North America primarily due to access constraints in both operations. Referencing European approaches for long distance tunneling, the Devil?s Slide Tunnel project has applied innovation and technology to provide the ability to overcome this unique challenge. The Devil?s Slide Tunnel requires the construction of twin bore tunnels excavated based on sequential excavation method (SEM) construction methods using New Austrian Tunneling Methods (NATM) principles. The twin tunnels are approximately 9 m (30 ft) in diameter and 1,250 m (4,100 linear ft) in length. The purpose of this project is to reroute Route 1 from around the Devil?s Slide through the San Pedro Mountains crossing from Montara, CA along the south and into Pacifica, CA in the north. The Caltrans project was awarded in December 2006 for a total of $272,366,000. The job is an A+B job, thus the estimate scheme of final lining while tunnel excavation is important to save time. A+B is a method of rewarding a contractor for completing a project as quickly as possible. By providing a cost each working day, the contract combines the cost to perform the work (A) with the cost of impact to the public (B) to provide the lowest cost to the public. Concurrent mining while lining is achieved through a series of gantries and a set of tunnel forms allowing the pass-through of the excavation equipment. The tunnel lining operation passes through several phases of work that are dependent upon the progress of the tunnel excavation process. This involves unique milestones, such as the evolution of the ventilation system, development of an enlarged cross passage to allow equipment to access each tunnel from within the tunnel and, finally, the installation of an invert prior to arch lining that limits the continuity of the final lining operation.

"Over the past decade, ground falls have resulted in five fatalities, representing over 40% of all fatalities occurring in underground stone mines in the United States. In conjunction with recent high-profile pillar collapses, the need for further ground control research in the nation’s stone mines is evident. Ground conditions are growing more difficult. Therefore, this research is focused on deep cover, steeply dipping, and multi-level underground nonmetal mines. The objective of this paper is to introduce a geomechanical study of pillar development in a steeply dipping limestone deposit. To accomplish this, a numerical model was developed using input from modified laboratory test data and in situ stress measurements provided by the mine to simulate the development of a pillar under these conditions. The model was then verified against field observations and stress mapping. The calibrated model was then used to calculate the estimated stresses in the pillar and immediate roof as development progresses around an instrumented pillar.INTRODUCTIONGround falls represent a significant hazard in the nation’s underground stone mines. In response to recent large-scale pillar collapses, as well as stakeholder interactions, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are currently conducting detailed investigations into the complex loading conditions at mines operating in challenging operational environments. These include deep-cover, steeply dipping, and multi-level mines where there is the potential for an increased risk of ground failure. The Pleasant Gap Mine, shown in Figure 1, operates in the Valentine Formation, which is typically light grey, extremely fine-grained limestone, and approximately 21.3 m (70 ft.) thick. The Centre Hall Formation makes up the immediate and main roof members and is approximately 9.1 m (30 ft.) thick, consisting of medium-dark-gray limestone (Murphy et al., 2018). Situated in a syncline, the top of the Valentine Formation dips at approximately 19° with a strike of approximately N54E in the area of interest (see Figure 2)."

The properties of tailings that emanate from laterite nickel processing plants are significantly different to most other mine tailings. They typically comprise a mixture of fine materials that are made up of altered clays, chemical residues and salts. Neutralisation processes that are undertaken prior to tailings discharge result in a high proportion of gypsum in the tailings. The salinity of the pore fluid is commonly higher than 140 g/L of salts, dominated by magnesium sulfate. Hydraulically-placed tailings that undergo solar evaporation typically reach dry densities of less than 1 t/m3 of insoluble solids. In situ water contents after many months of drying may be as high as 80 per cent, and peak undrained shear strengths are unlikely to be greater than 20 kPa.This type of material is not conducive to upstream raising, from both a practicality and overall slope stability perspective. Even at rates of rise of less than 1 m/a, it is difficult to effect upstream raising on unaltered laterite nickel tailings. However, the authors have successfully designed and implemented upstream-raised laterite nickel tailings storage facilities. The upstream raises have been formed from both imported natural materials and air-dried and compacted tailings borrowed from the tailings beaches.Drying and associated strength gain has been achieved through various means of mechanical intervention, repeatedly exposing a zone of tailings to the atmosphere for evaporation. Field trials have been undertaken to optimise the approach, and the findings from the trials have been implemented in practice to allow stable upstream raises to be constructed. "The Chuktukon niobium-rare earth elements ore deposit is located in Siberia (Russia). Weathered carbonatite crusts are the basis of the ore deposit. The deposit itself is 3.5 km in length, about 800 to 1400 m in width and up to 200–300 m in thickness. The ores are composed of iron-manganese oxides (hydrogoethite, hematite, psilomelane, pyrolusite) and contain 3–7% of rare-earth phosphates (florencite, monazite) and 0.5–1% of niobium oxide (pyrochlore). The ore is completely finely dispersed and consists of oxide particles formed of compact, dense aggregates which makes ore dressing as well as leaching of the rare and radioactive elements very difficult. Several options for processing of these ores have been considered: 1) reduction of the iron oxides to magnetite followed by beneficiation with magnetic separation to produce a rare metal concentrate; 2) processing of the rare earth elements (REE) containing minerals by direct alkaline-acid treatment; 3) processing of the ores using nitric acid leaching in an autoclave.INTRODUCTIONThe Chuktukon niobium-rare earth metal ore deposit is located in Siberia, in the Krasnoyarsk region, 110 km from the Boguchan hydroelectric power station which has recently been commissioned. This mineral raw materials is capable of providing impetus for the modernization of the Russian rare metal industry because of its qualitative and quantitative characteristics. The deposit is located in a region of promising industrial development and is a part of the territoriy where the Russian Federation’s Program “Complex Development of the Lower Angara Region” is currenly being realized. The main program directions are creation and development of industrial activities in sectors such as power, metallurgy, oil and gas, gold, rare-metals, and timber. The program will aid the development of the niobium and rare-metal resources of the Lower Angara and neighbouring regions as well as increase the national production of REE and therefore import substitution (Lapin, 1997; Lomaev & Kuzmin, 2003; Lomaev & Serdyuk, 2011; Serdyuk, Lomaev, & Kontorovich, 2000)."

"The concept of achieving a useful high-energy-product magnet through appropriate nanostructuring of known hard and soft phases has been tantalizing researchers since the idea was first proposed. The fabrication of exchange-coupled nanocomposite magnets faces several challenges including aligning the easy anisotropy axes of the hard-phase grains. Here we investigate experimentally two-phase nanostructures of hard Lio-ordered FePt and soft iron-rich/cc Fe(Pt). The Fe-Pt thin films were produced by epitaxial cosputtering onto MgO (001) single-crystal substrates which lead to strong (001) texturing. The measured hysteresis loops indicate nearly ideal exchange coupling. Excellent magnetic properties are obtained, with largest values of coercivity (51 kOe), saturation magnetization (1287 emu/ cm3, J, = 16.2 kG), and nominal maximum energy product (58 MGOe).1. IntroductionA key figure of merit for permanent magnets is the maximum energy product (BH)rrw.x. The achievable maximum energy product is determined by a magnet's saturation magnetization M, and its magnetic anisotropy. For example, it is well known that (BH)rrw.x :S 4n2M,2• In the past, record energy products have been the result of discovering new compounds with high values of magnetization and anisotropy. However, finding new compounds with better magnetic properties than the current record-holding magnet Nd2Fe14B has proven to be difficult. A different approach is to exploit the exchange coupling mechanism between known hard and soft magnetic phases to enhance the maximum energy product [1-5]. In such a composite system, high coercivity is achieved due to the anisotropy of the hard phase as well as a nanostructure which prohibits large-scale domain wall reversal mechanisms. Magnetization is enhanced by the soft phase and loop squareness results from texturing of the hard phase easy-axis as well as complete exchange coupling between the coexisting hard and soft grains."

Deposit-10/11A is situated in the iron rich Bailadila region of India comprising haematite ore of average grade 65 per cent Fe. The deposit production line was commissioned in the year 2002 having a capacity of 5 Mt/a. The plant has the state of the art mineral processing equipments.The ore is transported from mines to crushing plant by means of dumpers. The ore is comminuted in two stages to get 150 mm top size product and this product is transported through conveyor system and is stored in silos as feed stock for beneficiation plant. In the beneficiation plant this crushed product is wet screened in two stages to produce a product of lump (-150 + 10 mm) and fines (-10 + 3.15 mm). The product of -3.15 mm top size is fed to primary classifier for a size separation at 150 µm. The resultant product (-3.15 mm + 150 µm) is dewatered and transported to fi ne ore product stock yard through conveyor system. The minus 150 µm material from classifier overflow is fed to cyclones (508 mm cyclone battery with an apex of 65 mm) for desliming at 45 µm and to recover ultrafi nes (-150 + 45 µm). The cyclone overfl ow slimes (-45 µm) along with water is treated in lamella thickeners to recover process water. The thickener underflow material is transported to tailing pond (discharge rate is 300 m3/h at a specific gravity of 1.4) by pumping through HDPE (high density poly ethylene) pipeline and the over flow water is being recirculated. The water requirement for beneficiation is approx 1.5 m3 per ton of ore.This paper aims at identifying and quantifying the factors that affect the overall plant performance (grade and recovery) during the different seasonal variations especially in the rainy season (mid-June to end October). The effect of seasonal variations on unit operations such as milling, classification, thickening and filtration are discussed. Specific cases are presented as examples and recommendations are formulated.

Chromium green is an essential metal with various applications in the paints, construction, electronics, and aerospace industries. The main source of chromium green is the carbo-thermic reduction of chromite ores, however, chromite ores are being heavily depleted on a global scale, hence the need to find alternative or secondary sources for the chromium. In order to meet the global demand for chromium there is a need to implement principles of the sustainable circular economy to keep chromium within the material loop. Ferrochrome slag and stainless steel slags are secondary resources that are potential sources of chromium. In this work, recovery of chromium from ferrochrome slag was investigated. The ferrochrome slag was alkaline leached using sodium hydroxide- sodium hypochlorite solution to reduce the use of potent reagents that have a potential negative environmental impact. The leachate produced by oxidative alkaline leaching of ferrochrome slag contained hexavalent chromium, which was used to recover the extracted chromium through a two-stage process involving reduction and precipitation. Reduction of hexavalent Cr to trivalent Cr was investigated using anhydrous FeSO4 at concentrations of 5 g/L, 10 g/L, and 15 g/L. Precipitation was conducted by dosing the reduced leach solution with 1 M sodium hydroxide at dosages of 5 ml/L, 10 ml/L, and 15 ml/L. The experiments were designed using the Taguchi (L9) orthogonal array and analysed according to the ANOVA, general linear model. The optimized conditions for the reduction step were ferrous sulfate dosage of 5 g/L with a pH of 12, and for the precipitation step, 1 M sodium hydroxide at a dosage of 15 ml/L with a setting time of 90 minutes and pH of 7. Physical changes were observed during the two-step chromium recovery, with solution changing from a yellowish colour to dark green colour indicating completion of the reaction. The chromium recovery was found to be 93.3%.

A cover of inert material overlain by topsoil is required over compacted, seawater-neutralised red mud, a waste product from the refining of bauxite to produce alumina. The cover is to be revegetated, and it is necessary to demonstrate that the potential evapotranspirative-driven uptake of salts from the seawater-neutralised red mud will not impact the revegetation. An instrumented column was designed and constructed to test the evaporation-driven uptake of salts from compacted red mud into an overlying cover material with a thickness limited to 600 mm. The PVC column is 1.2 m high, with a 200 mm internal diameter. The column is instrumented with up to ten of each of moisture, suction, salinity and temperature sensors, together with a data logger, designed and manufactured at The University of Queensland (UQ) in Brisbane, Australia. The sensors were installed through the wall of the column at various depth intervals, with each set of sensors located at quarter points around the circumference of the column. Two pressure transducers were installed in the column to monitor the change of water level due to rainfall and evaporation. The column was filled with compacted red mud to a depth of 600 mm overlain by 600 mm of cover material, both sourced from the Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) site in Gladstone, Queensland, Australia. The column is installed on a building roof at UQ, alongside a weather station, and will be subjected to the prevailing weather conditions for up to 1 year in the first instance, during which time the weather conditions and sensor responses will be continuously monitored. "Prior to 2003, most high rise structures in Honolulu, Hawaii were supported on driven pile foundations, extending through shallow coral strata and bearing in competent formations at depths of 100 ft (30 m) or greater. In 2003, the 40-story Hokua Tower became the first building in Hawaii to use continuous flight auger (CFA) piles for support. These piles derived most of their capacity from side shear in the shallow coral formations, which reduced their required lengths to less than 100 ft (30 m) sand significantly increased their capacity. Not only did CFA piles prove to be more efficient and cost-effective than driven piles, but the reduced noise and vibration associated with their installation made them and drilled piers the foundations of choice for most mid- to high-rise projects going forward. Because drilled foundations were new to Hawaii, it was necessary to develop effective design parameters for the unique soil and rock conditions found within this urban area. While drilled foundations were found to have many advantages over driven piles, construction techniques had to be modified to compensate for extensive voids in the coral formations. This paper presents a compendium of the data derived from numerous full scale, instrumented load tests conducted during the past decade and provides guidance for the design and installation of CFA and drilled pier foundation systems in areas having geologic settings and history similar to that of Honolulu.INTRODUCTIONThe State of Hawaii is one of the most remote areas in the world, lying nearly 2400 miles (3800 km) from the nearest continental land mass. In spite of this vast distance, the population of the islands has grown to over 1 million people, the majority of whom live within and in close proximity to the City of Honolulu on the Island of Oahu. The city is densely populated with over 400 high rise apartments, condominiums, hotels and office buildings located within 5 miles (8 km) of the city center (Fig.1). Nearly all of these buildings have been constructed within the past 50 years."

Drinker, President of Lehigh University, and Secretary of the General Local Committee, called the meeting to order, and welcomed the Institute to the Bethlehems, where its first meeting, after its organization in May, 1871, at Wilkes-Barre, was held in August, 1871.*

The Highway 146 Bridge Expansion Project across the Clear Creek Channel in Houston, Texas was designed on driven precast concrete piles. However, during construction, the piles along one side of the bridge along the main channel encountered obstructions and couldn’t be installed. These obstructions turned out to be the remnants of a previous bridge foundation at this location, which was unknown to the designers since that bridge had been demolished 40 years ago. Those old foundations were massive 20 ft by 40 ft (6 m by 12 m) pile caps 11 ft (3.3 m) thick supported on precast concrete piles 37 to 55 ft (11 to 17 m) long. The foundation re-design for these locations involved installing a single 78 inch (2 m) diameter drilled shaft up to 125 ft (38 m) long to replace the originally planned driven pile supported pile cap. The drilled shafts would need to be installed within very tight tolerances since they were supporting a single bridge column directly above it. In addition to drilling through the obstructions, this work would need to be completed from barges in 30 ft (9 m) of water capable of dealing with both the current and tides affecting this area. The shafts were installed using a multi-step process. The first step involved coring a larger diameter 100 inch (2.5 m) hole through the reinforced concrete pile cap and removing the concrete inside. This was followed by the installation of a 72 ft (22 m) long permanent casing to and removing the soil and existing precast piles inside. Finally, the drilled shaft excavations were advanced to the completion depths (uncased) using bentonite slurry as the support fluid.

Current regulations for fire suppression systems in underground coal mines to protect conveyor belt installations have been in place since the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted. Over time, the coal conveyer equipment being used and ventilation conditions underground have changed significantly, particularly the width of the conveyor belts and the use of belt air at the face. The effect of these new conditions on the effectiveness of suppression systems during a fire is not known. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to evaluate the effect of air velocity, water sprinkler activation temperature and a limited water application time on the effectiveness of water sprinkler fire suppression systems to extinguish large-scale conveyor belt fires. The fire tests were conducted using both new and used 1.8-m-wide, fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) flame-resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G test). Tests were conducted using standard response sprinklers with activation temperatures of 68° C and 141° C at air velocities of 0.5 and 5.1 m/s. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each sprinkler activation temperature, one using a new belt and one with a used belt. The results showed that the suppression system was able to suppress the fires in ten minutes to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire hose. However, in several of the tests, the fire reestablished itself a few minutes after the sprinkler water supply was cut off and quickly grew out of control. This report discusses the large-scale experimental configuration, the installation specifications of the fire suppression system and the results and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity, sprinkler activation temperature and limited water application on the suppression system performance.

The Péchelbronn oil field is located in the province of Alsace, in the Rhine Valley, about 30 miles north of Strasbourg. It is approximately 4 miles wide and 12 miles long, extending from the villages of Lobsann on the north to Wintershausen and Ohlungen near Haguenau on the south. (See Fig. 1.) The productive area includes about 44,000 hectares (107,680 acres). The name Péchelbronn signifies "pitch-spring" or "pitch-fountain." The first exploratory galleries were driven in from the hillside in 1735; and in 1745 the first official concession was granted by the French government and the first pit sunk to a depth of about 30 ft. Extraction by drilled wells was begun in 1879, supplementing the mining operations, and during the next 10 years 200 wells were drilled to an average depth of 172 m. (568 ft.). The bringing in of two "gusher" wells, in 1882 and 1888, respectively, was followed by the abandonment of all underground work. Underground mining, with a view to increasing the production of petroleum by recovering the oil left in the sands after drilling wells, was resumed in 1916. This mining operation started by sinking shaft No. 1 to a depth of 150 m. (495 ft.). The underground developments were pushed during 1917 and 1918 and the annual production of the Péchel-bronn field was increased to about 50,000 metric tons or 350,000 bbl. On the signing of the Versailles Treaty the province of Alsace, which had been taken by Germany as the result of the war of 1870, was returned to France, and the proprietary rights were taken over by the French Government. Concessions or leases, which embraced all the known oil-bearing territory of the field, were granted to the present operating company, Mines de Péchelbronn. This company followed both the drilling and the mining methods of the previous company.

This study investigated the performance of citric acid as lixiviant for cathode material from end-of-life lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Black mass containing 84.2 weight percent MNC (LiNi0.45Mn0.4Co0.15O2) and 15.8 weight percent LCO (LiCoO2) material was leached at solid-to-liquid ratios of 20, 50 and 100 g/L. Leaching with 1.5 M citric acid, 2 volume percent H2O2 and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 20 g/L at 95 °C extracted 90 percent Co, 95 percent Li, 94 percent Mn and 94 percent Ni within 20 min. At the highest solid-to-liquid ratio of 100 g/L with 1.5 M citric acid, 10 volume percent H2O2 and 95 °C, 84 percent Al, 84 percent Co, 87 percent Li, 86 percent Mn and 96 percent Ni were leached after 40 min, producing a leach solution containing 0.68 g/L Al, 20.0 g/L Co, 6.0 g/L Li, 13.6 g/L Mn and 19.3 g/L Ni. Using stepwise addition of H2O2, instead of initial bulk addition, did not significantly improve the leaching efficiency but did reduce the required leaching time. Temperature control of the reactor was also more manageable with stepwise addition of H2O2, and evolution of gas was less vigorous. It was observed that the leaching efficiencies of Co, Li and Mn decreased slightly at solid-to-liquid ratios of 50 and 100 g/L, while the leaching of Ni increased slightly. The solution leached at 20 g/L could be stored for six weeks without any spontaneous precipitation. However, solutions leached at 50 and 100 g/L showed changes in concentration after one month of storage, suggesting that processes that have a large material throughput and use high solid-to-liquid ratios around 100 g/L must ensure that the solutions are not stored for extended periods of time.
