Previous results have shown how con- trolled-potential sulphidization (CPS) can give improved metallurgy during rougher flo- tation of mixed oxide-sulphide copper ores. Results in this paper, using different samples and different equipment, confirm the previous results and extend the application of CPS to cleaner flotation. By using CPS, faster flotation of copper minerals (chalcocite and malachite) from clay was obtained in roughing and cleaning, and improved concentrate grades and recoveries were achieved over those by conventional manual control. The optimum sulphidizing potential (i.e. the potential of a sulphide ion-selective electrode versus a saturated calomel electrode) was -500 mV, and could be controlled to ¦5 mV, during four rougher- scavenger and three cleaner-re cleaner stages. This optimum gives the best balance between copper recovery, concentrate grade, and sodium sulphide consumption. Five cleaning circuits and five ore com- posites of different composition (0.55-1.50 per cent Cu) were examined as well as the effect of feed size and pulp density. Better results were obtained at 20 per cent solids in a Denver cell than at 33 per cent solids in an Agitair cell; this may have been related to the high clay content of the ore. Commercial equipment for pilot plant or full-scale plant application of CPS is cur- rently being developed.

The 81 st Regular Meeting and convention was called to order by the President, Charles W. Margolf at 9:00 a.m. Monday, July l, 1985 in the Silverton Room of Tamarron, a resort hotel near Durango, Colorado. President Margolf welcomed the members and others in attendance to the convention and noted his theme of "Make It Happen!" He introduced those present of the 1985-86 Board of Directors and Officers who were elected by the Board of Directors at their Annual Meeting June 29. They were: Arthur K. Neill, President; Bernard Bernstrom, President-Elect; Loren V. Linville, Convention Liaison Officer; Vice Presidents Douglas J. Hammer of Colorado, C. Joe Presley of Montana, Alva L. Smith of New Mexico, Fred Wertz of North Dakota, Rex Berry of Utah and Thomas J. Lien of Wyoming; and Doris G. Finnie, Executive Secretary & Treasurer. He also introduced Ira. E. McKeever who was elected to serve as chairman of the Advisory Board by that group. Margolf mentioned that one three-year term as a Director would be voted upon at the annual business meeting which would be held Tuesday, July 2 at 1:30 p.m. in the Windom Peak Room and introduced James "Doug" Ingram, the nominee of the Nominating Committee. The area around Osisko lake, the Horne mine, and the town of Rouyn, in northwestern Quebec, presents a most interesting structural problem. The present discussion is confined to an area around Osisko lake, about six miles long and three miles wide, shown in Figure 1. The writers are particularly indebted to Mr. Thayer Lindsley, of Ventures Limited, who sponsored the investigation and gave permission to publish this paper. Mr. H. L. Roscoe and Mr. Oliver Hall, of Noranda Mines, Limited, gave every possible assistance; and the Noranda geologists, Mr. H. M. Butterfield, Dr. Peter Priee, and Dr. G. G. During the past 20 years, FKC-Lake Shore, located in southern Indiana, has been working with Contitech, the German conveyor company, to push vertical conveyor technology to new depths and open up additional opportunities for underground mine owners. Historically, the underground mining industry has largely been unable to realize the benefits of these efficient systems due to the design limitations in maximum depth and capacity. Until recently, only relatively shallow depth mines with low production rates have been a ?t for a vertical conveyor system. This, however, is changing with technical advancements in the Pocketlift system. With each milestone, a new vertical conveyor record is set for depth and capacity. For instance, in 2002, FKC-Lake Shore set one such record with the installation of a Pocketlift system at a mine in the Illinois coal basin with a lift height of 273 m (896 ft) and a production rate of 1.8 kt/h (2,000 stph). Although it was unthinkable at that time, today?s vertical conveyors are capable of reaching lift heights up to 700 m (2,300 ft) with an average production rate of 450 t/h (500 stph). These new lift heights and production rates are opening the technology to more potential mine owners and shifting the way people look at moving material in the future.

IN this paper the author's intention is to convey a brief resume of the lead flotation treatment and lead flotation machines, which have replaced the May jigs and Wilfley tables at the plant of the North Broken Hill Ltd., and converted this mill into an all-flotation plant.Attention is directed to the fact that this drastic change from semi-gravity to all-flotation treatment, has been successfully accomplished without resorting to finer grinding than that previously in vogue for Wilfley table concentration, viz.: 10% to 16% plus 40-mesh I.M.M. screen.From the figures now available it is manifest that the scheme of all-flotation concentration-new as regards its successful application to Broken Hill ores is resulting in considerably higher-grade lead concentrates, and is substantially decreasing charges for labour, stores, and maintenance.The new treatment is far-reaching in its simplification of plant, as evidenced by the idle jigs and tables, and the results being obtained by North Broken Hill Ltd. may possibly influence metallurgical practice generally in Broken Hill.The outstanding features of the treatment are:(1) The coarseness, and high grade of lead concentrates obtainable.(2) The low time factor required for flotation.(3) The plant capacity, and the simplicity of its operation.(4) The low horse-power consumption.(5) The small cost for reagents used (not exceeding 3d. per ton of ore).

For some underground structures, the use of the plane strain assumption in stress analyses may not be justified. The finite element method and photoelasticity have been used to obtain complete 3-D solutions, but, for various reasons, neither method has found universal use. The boundary integral equation method (B.I.E.M.) can be more efficient and economical than the finite element method for 3-D problems involving large volume to surface area ratios. A B.I.E.M. program developed for calculating stresses and deformations in infinite elastic media has been used to determine the 3-D distributions of stress around T- and Y- junctions of circular tunnels in stress fields in which the ratios of horizontal to vertical stress are 0, 0.33, 1.0 and 2.0. For the T- junction considered,stress concentrations at the intersection are approximately twice the plane strain values. Except where horizontal field stresses are high, the stresses in both tunnels approximate the plane strain values at about two tunnel diameters from the point of intersection of the tunnel centre lines. The stresses in the two branches reach those for the corresponding plane strain, two parallel tunnel case two diameters from the point of intersection of thq inner tunnel walls. Very high stress concentra- tions occur in the pillar of rock between the inner tunnel walls near the point of intersection.

From July 29 to September 15, 2004, the 178th cruise of the R/V Sonne took place under the KOMEX program in the Sea of Okhotsk. One of the cruise objectives was to dredge two different kinds of seamounts: 1 ? underwater volcanoes from the north slope of the Kurile Basin; 2 ? a seamount formed by tectonic (non volcanic) processes from the Kashevarov Trough. The underwater volcanoes are young edifices (0.84 ± 06 Ma, Baranov et al., 2002) with heights ranging from 150 to 300 m. Tops of the volcanoes are located at depth of 1260 to 2340 meters. The volcanic edifices are formed by olivine-clinopyroxene-plagioclase basalts. Dredge samples are covered by Fe-Mn crusts up to 40 mm thick. The seamount from the Kashevarov Trough is a tilted block. The height of the seamount is about 400 m and its top is located at a depth of 960 meters. Biotite hornfels, conglomerates, granodiorites, dropstones, and Fe-Mn crusts were recovered there. The thicknesses of crusts are up to 150 mm. Fe-Mn crusts from the underwater volcanoes differ from Fe-Mn crusts from the Kasevarov Trough seamount in morphology as well as in mineralogical and chemical compositions. In certain populations, nonspecific airway hyperreactivity (HR) is associated with increased respiratory symptoms and decreased lung function. We analyzed standardized pulmonary symptom questionnaires and pre-shift spirometry with methacholine inhalation challenge (Chatham, M. et al, Chest 82: 15) on 228 control workers (C) with no known exposure to occupational hazards, and 200 underground bituminous coal miners (M). M and c were similar in age, height, sex, and smoking status. HR (defined as >15% fall in FEVI after up to 5 vital capacity breaths of 25mg% methacholine) was found in 25% of M and 28% of C (NS). M showed higher% predicted FEVI (%PFEV) than c (M 107%, C 104%*). 28% of current smokers showed HR versus 22% of never smokers (NS). Current smokers showed reduced %PFEV but were not different from lifelong non-smokers regarding prevalence of HR. Subjects with HR showed reduced %PFEV, (HR 101%, not HR 107%*) but M and c with HR showed similar reductions. M had more dyspnea and chronic cough than c*. Hyperreactivity was associated with increased symptoms in controls but not miners. In our study, the prevalence of HR in coal miners was similar to nonminers, and did not explain miners' respiratory symptoms. * P < 0.05

Cobalt is recovered from square type of spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) containing 5~20 % Co, 5~7 % Li, 5~10 % Ni, 15% organic chemicals, and 7% plastics together with Cu, Al, Fe, and Mn. The waste LIB was prepared by physical treatment. After screening, the crushed LIBs were separated to +8 mesh, -8/+16 mesh, and -16 mesh powder. Among these, -16 mesh powder was selected for leaching. The leaching test was investigated at 2 M H2SO4, 6 vol.% H2O2, reaction temperature 60 ?, agitation speed 300 rpm, solid/liquid ratio 50 g/ 500 ml, reaction time 1 h. The leaching efficiency of cobalt was more than 99 % and its concentration was 24.9 g/L. For removing of impurities such as copper, iron, and aluminum in the leaching solution before cobalt solvent extraction, the impurities were eliminated by pH control with alkali solution. For selective extraction of cobalt, the aqueous phase removed impurities was equilibrated with different volumes of 0.4 M Cyanex 272 saponified of 50 %. Extraction efficiency of cobalt was about 80 % at first step. Separation coefficient (ßCo/Li) of cobalt and lithium extractions was 206.5. Over 9.0 % of pure cobalt sulfate solution was obtained after stripping with H2SO4 solution.

The deformations resulting from excavation of very large openings are compared using two-dimensional F.E. continuum analyses and discontinuous physical models (20,000 discrete blocks). Both the joint orientations and the model horizontal stress levels were varied. Some models were dynamically loaded to simulate earthquakes (0.2-0.7 g). Model deformations were recorded using photogrammetry. The changes in deformation when increasing the simulated spans from 20 m to 50 m were of particular interest. High horizontal stress caused surface heave when joint orientations were favourable for arch stability. Joint orientations also determined whether the pillars between parallel openings were in a state of compression or tension. INTRODUCTION The engineering performance of large rock caverns has traditionally been learned from mining and hydro power projects, where the depth below surface is often many times greater than the span of the openings. Deformations measured in the walls and roofs of hydro power caverns generally range from about 5-50 mm, though there is a documented case where a wall moved in 126 mm (1), and another where the arch moved down 147 mm (2). The chief objectives of the present studies of large near-surface openings were threefold: (i) to provide deformation data to compare with monitored data from planned engineering projects involving large span near-surface excavations, e.g. underground sports complexes, civil defense shelters, nuclear power stations,

The Institute conducts jointly with the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Institute of Electrical Engineers, certain activities as listed below, and is joint owner with them of certain properties. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society, but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees, of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which have equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $1,987,793. The A. I. M. E. trustees are William H. Bassett, H. G. Moulton and R. M. Roosevelt. The President of the Board is Harold V. Coes and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

THE object of this paper is to make a brief comparison of the out-lines of several forms of ports for steel-melting furnaces, in reference chiefly to the proper mixture of the gas and air, and to the direction in which the flame is thrown down into. the interior of the furnace. In the illustrations on the accompanying plate, Fig. 1 shows a form of port designed by M. Pernot, of St Chamond, France. This is used with the dome roof preferred by him for the revolving bottom that bears his name. From No. I has been derived No. 2. This is shown on the plans of Mr., A. L. Holley, and from them three large furnaces have been built and put into operation by the Springfield Iron Company. Fig. 3 shows an outline proposed by Messrs. Richmond & Potts for the Pernot furnace. In this the ports are brought in under an arched. roof of nearly the ordinary form., instead of over the top of the roof, as with the done of M Pernot, Fig. 4 shows a furnace as built by Krupp of Essen, Prussia, for fluid refining, or “washing” -to use the briefer French term. Professor R. P. Plewman graduated with a B.Sc. in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1943, after which he had two years of military service. Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg attended St Andrew&apos;s College in Grahamstown before proceeding to the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Eng.) degree cum laude in mining and metal. lurgy at the end of 1942 and was awarded the Chamber of Mines Scholarship and Gold Medal. Dr M. G. Atmore, Deputy Technical Director of the Anglo American Corporation of South Mrica, is also Manpower and Education Adviser to the Chamber of Mines of South Mrica and a Visiting Professor at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. Mr D. A. Vi1joen attended Queen&apos;s College, Queenstown, and then Rhodes University, where he gained a diploma in chemistry and a B. Comm. degree. Mr B. E. Protheroe, C.Eng., obtained a degree in Physical Metallurgy at University College, Cardiff, and an M.sc. in corrosion science from Swansea University. Mr N. J. A Special General Meeting of the Institute was held in Kelvin House, Johannesburg on Wednesday, 29th September, 1971. The President, Prof. D. D. Howat opened the meeting at 9.55 a.m. The President read the notice of meeting which was as follows: "In order to bring industry into closer liaison with the work of your Institute and to place the Institute&apos;s finances on a sound basis your Council recommends that companies be admitted to membership of the Institute under clause 2.6 of the Constitution, that is, as Non-Corporate members. The designation for this class of member will be that of "Company Affiliate". 2 Membership: This clause to be amended as follows:- 2.6 "Non-Corporate members shall comprise the grades of:- Company Affiliate Honorary Fellow Graduate Associate Student" 2.6.1 This clause to be added:- "Companies involved in or associated with the mining or metallurgical industries are eligible to become company affiliates" 2.14 Add:- "A special certificate shall be issued to all company affiliates". After giving the background to the recommendation made by Council the President asked for a proposer and seconder for the resolution. Mr J. K. E. Douglas proposed and Mr D. G. Maxwell seconded the resolution. The meeting agreed that the constitution be amended as proposed. The meeting closed as 10.05 a.m.

Electrokinetic dewatering of kimberlite slime under constant direct curents of 0,5 to 2 A and dewatering under constant applied potentia Is of 16,5 to 46,5 V are considered. The combined efects of electrophoresis and the addition of 8,3 x 10-3 M Mg2+ ions on the one hand, and 1 to 10 p.p.m. of the anionic polyacrylamide flocculant Praestol 2935 on the other, were investigated in a 3-litre Perspex electrophoretic cel. .The electro-osmotic dewatering experiments were conducted in a 3-litre Perspex electro-osmotic cel at various electrode spacings, as well as with a moving anode (top electrode). During electrophoretic dewatering, the zeta potential of the kimberlite particles did not change significantly, whereas the pH and temperature showed marked increases with time. The addition of Praestol 2935 enhanced the setling of the sludge bed owing to the additional effect of flocculation. The addition of electrolyte Mg (CIO4)2 retarded the separation process, partly as a result of gel formation in the slurry. During the electro-osmotic experiments, the rate of dewatering was found to be approximately proportional to the applied constant direct current, and to be independent of the electrode spacing. In general, electro-osmotic dewatering seemed to be more energy-efficient than electrophoretic dewatering.

Already about one-third of South Africa&apos;s coal is mined at depths exceeding 100 metres. Almost all this mining is done by the bord and pillar method. Conventional design procedures call for ever larger pillars as depths of workings increase, resulting in the loss of large amounts of coal and reductions in productivity. Barrier pillars are in general use to ensure against large collapses. The presence of these strong pillars would allow a more efficient design of the bord and pillar layout to yield improved extraction ratios by using smaller, yielding, pillars between the bords. Knowledge of the complete load- displacement curves for such pillars is a prerequisite for the design of such a system. A 100-MN, stiff jacking system for measuring the complete load-displacement curves of pillars with cross-sections of up to 2 m X 2 m is described. The jacks are installed in a slot cut across the central plane of symmetry of a pillar, thereby ensuring that the stress distribution in the pillar during a test, especially at its contacts with the roof and floor, is identical to that caused in a similar pillar by convergence across the seam. Preliminary results in the form of complete load-displacement curves for test pillars of about 1.5 metre square section are given.

In conjunction with steady increases in production levels, long-wall operators have applied greater quantities of ventilating air to control respirable dust and methane gas. As a result, air velocities greater than 7.6 m/s (1500 fpm) have been measured on longwall faces. Operators have expressed concern over the potential entrainment of respirable dust at these high-velocities, especially during shield advance as dust falls from the shield canopy directly into theair stream. Laboratory tests to simulate dust liberation by shield movement were conducted at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory of NIOSH in a wind tunnel designed to study dust entrainment in high-velocity airstreams. Dust was introduced into the tunnel to determine dust concentration as it relates to entrainment, dilution, air velocity, and particle adhesion. Airborne dust samples were obtained by iso-kinetic sampling using BGI cyclones to quantify respirable dust concentration at the various air velocities. Laboratory tests were con-ducted at velocities ranging from 2.0 to 10.1 m/s (400 to 2000 fpm),and significant differences in airborne respirable dust levels were measured. This research is being conducted to provide fundamental information on the entrainment characteristics of respirable dust at high air velocities, which will subsequently lead to solutions for shield dust control. A discussion of the test procedures and results are presented.

The 5180 m EPBM drive on the Lower Olentangy Tunnel (LOT) is predominantly within glacial overburden. To connect LOT with the existing OARS deep tunnel in limestone bedrock, the upper 15 m inside diameter Vine Street retrieval shaft telescopes down to 6.7 m in diameter and extends into the karstic Columbus Limestone to a depth of 51 m, where a 104 m SEM tunnel will connect to OARS shaft 6. Pre-excavation grouting was reuired prior to lower shaft excavation to reduce potentially high groundwater inows. This paper discusses the secant pile installation, grouting program, shaft excavation, and hydrogeologic observations.
