The large diameter caisson foundations and their construction methods for three 50 to 60 storey high buildings in Singapore are described. The caissons are 5 m to 8 m in diameter and 40 m to 100 m deep, excavated either by hand or mechanised excavators or by drilling and blasting. Performance of the 50 storey DBS Building is described.

"One of the most useful approaches to a complex problem is to model the system which gives rise to the problem and to perform simulations through the model to find appropriate solutions. The Engel Model may be used as such a simulator to investigate the problem of the exploration for natural resources.The Engel Model is based on a two-stage search procedure in which a known area (A) which contains m prizes is subjected to search by n coverings. During the first-stage search the sensor system records signals which may be a response from prizes (that is, true signals) or may be false. Signals tend to cluster around a prize and a cluster size consists of s signals. If a circle of radius R is drawn around each signal some will overlap and the overlap from s signals contains a prize. The cost of a single covering in which each point of the area comes under observation once, is designated E1. Second-stage detailed search is expensive and is confined to areas of overlap of s circles; it leads to the location of prizes. Second-stage search of the whole area costs Ea units. The expected value, V, of a prize is known and its development cost is E3 units.The sensor system characteristics are defined by the circle of radius R around a signal, which should be small compared with the total area A and enters the model as a parameter a x R2/A. The probability of a false signal during a single covering of a circle of radius I is a known constant, A.This model was applied to the search for uranium ore bodies using two different types of occurrence. In the first, the Wyoming Basin type, the area is relatively large (A = 1 496 square miles) and a few (m = 4) large prizes occur (expected value V = $30 million). In the second area, which represents the Ambrosia Lake region of New Mexico, the area is smaller (A = 212 square miles) and contains many (m = 200) smaller prizes (expectedvalue of a prize V,$2 million). The three costs, E1, E2, E3, are adjusted to the different circumstances in the two areas.Simulations were performed using n = 1 to 40 coverings with cluster sizes s = 0 to 19; the radius R was varied from 0.52 to 3 miles (and, therefore, a = 0.002 to 0.133 0, respectively, dependent on the area of interest). The value of A was varied from 0.01 to 0.10.Profitable programs were found over a wide range of the parameters; the two areas required different strategies to achieve maximum profit. In the Ambrosia Lake region a few passes (n = 4 to 6) with small cluster sizes (s = 2 to 6) are more profitable, whereas in the Wyoming Basin region a large number of passes (n = 35 to 40) and cluster sizes of s = 5 to 10 are most profitable.As pointed out by Allais (1957) the larger prizes are the most important in deciding the successful outcomes of exploration programs, and the profit margin in the search for a few large prizes is sufficient to yield success over a wide range of programs. Such programs require very large investments if they are to be successful.To refine the Engel Simulator as a decision-maker in selecting the most profitable exploration programs it is necessary to obtain firm estimates of the sensor system characteristics, that is, of R, a and ? (lambda)."

The Los Bronces copper deposit is located on the west side of the Andes Mountains in central Chile about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Santiago. The deposit consists of a hydrothermal breccia complex that was emplaced in the western part of an earlier porphyry copper mineral system. This system exhibits propylitic, sericitic, silicic to potassic hydrothermal alteration with disseminated and stockwork copper-molybdenum sulfide mineralization over an area of about 12 km2 (5 sq. miles). The Rio Blanco Mine, about 800 m (0.5 miles) east of Los Bronces, is an underground block caving mine located in the central part of this system. The mineralization at Rio Blanco is characterized by one of the highest primary copper grades known for porphyry copper systems. Present mining at Los Bronces is from an open pit located in the northern part of a hydrothermal complex that is composed of at least seven different copper-bearing tourmaline breccia pipes. Together these pipe form one large contiguous body about 2 km (1.2 miles) long and 0.7 km (0.4 miles) wide at the surface. This body crops out at elevations of between 3.5 and 4.1 km (2 and 2.5 miles) above sea level. Each breccia pipe has a characteristic shape, matrix, type and degree of mineralization and alteration. Quartz, tourmaline, specularite, anhydrite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, sericite, chlorite, and rock flour are present in significant quantities in most breccia matrices. The clasts consist mainly of quartz monzonite, andesite, and minor amounts of quartz latite porphyry. The seven different breccia pipes are identified, from oldest to youngest, as Ghost, Central, Western, Infiernillo, Fine Gray, Anhydrite, and Donoso. The breccias coalesce, interfinger, or display gradational contacts. In places they form sharp contacts with each other and with the surrounding intrusive or volcanic host rocks. Early breccias are disrupted or cut by subsequent breccia events. Explosive emplacement was followed by collapse after the release of hydrothermal pressures. The Los Bronces breccia complex has sharp contacts with the surrounding intrusive stock and andesites. These contacts dip inward on the north, west, and south margins. The eastern contact is nearly vertical and/or dips slightly outward and suggests a westward tilting of the body of about 15° after emplacement. The breccia complex is not fully explored at depth, but is known to extend at least below the 3 km (2 mile) elevation in its central eastern part, about 1 km (0.6 miles) below the highest breccia outcrop. Primary copper sulfide minerals are most abundant in the Donoso and Infiernillo breccias where the matrix consists mostly of tourmaline, quartz, sulfides, specularite, and/or chlorite with minor amounts of rock flour, sericite, and clay. The volume of the matrix material is mostly smaller than in the other breccias. Secondary enrichment enhanced the primary copper grade in the southern two-thirds of the Los Bronces breccia complex and in much of the surrounding porphyry system. Primary grades of 0.3% to 0.5% copper have been enriched to approximately 0.9%. This enrichment may extend from surface outcrops to a depth of more than 500 m (1, 640 ft) in more permeable parts of the breccia complex. A leached and oxidized capping of variable thickness covers a large part of the enriched layer and exceeds 300 m (984 ft) at one location. The shape and depth of the enrichment blanket and the capping suggest that the enrichment process is still active.

Introduction Samarco Mineracao S.A. is a Brazilian corporation jointly owned by S.A. Mineracao da Trindade (SAMITRI) and Utah International Inc., with 51% and 49% interests respectively. Headquartered in Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, Samarco owns and operates an open-pit mine capable of producing 10 Mt/a (11 million stpy) of iron ore; a concentrator rated at 7 Mt (7.7 million st); a 12-Mt (13.2-million st) capacity pipeline transportation system; a 7 Mt (7.7 million st) filtering and pelletizing plant; and a harbor facility. The mine, concentrator, and initial pipeline pump station are located at Germano, near the town of Mariana, about 300 km (186 mi) north of Rio de Janeiro by air. The pipeline terminal, pellet plant, and harbor are at Point Ubu, 70 km (43 mi) south of Vitória the capital city of Espirito Santo State, and about 300 km (186 mi) by air east of the mine. The 396-km (246-mi) pipeline uses 508-mm (20-in.) pipe except for a 53-km (33-mi) section where 457-mm (18-in.) pipe is used to absorb and control slack flow through increased velocity in one of the areas along the route. Iron Ore Slurry The hematite iron ore concentrate produced at the Germano plant is processed by grinding the average 53% run-of-mine itabirite iron ore to -150 µm (100 mesh) for gangue liberation. It is treated further by cyclones to remove the 10 µm (1250 mesh) slimes to prepare the ore for flotation. During the multistage cationic flotation operation, the silica is reduced to make low silica (-0.9%) concentrate for the direct reduction (DR) iron-making process or to make normal silica (-3.5% +2.5%) concentrate for the blast furnace (BF) iron-making process. The concentrate then is reground further to meet the particle size requirements for pelletizing. The reground hematite concentrate is screened in closed circuit with the regrind mills for close control of the maximum particle size, not to exceed 3.5% +75 µm (200 mesh) for pipeline wear protection. Thickened concentrates at 70% solids are pumped to four 5-kt (5,510-st)(dry) agitated slurry storage tanks that hold the feed before it goes to the first pipeline system pumping station. Pipeline Capacity The pipeline system was designed to transport 12 Mt/a (13.2 million stpy) at 65% solids with an average minimum safe operating velocity of 1.5 m/s (5 fps). The pipeline will transport 5 Mt (5.5 million st) in 1982. The system, therefore, is moving the slurry in 13-kt (14,330-st) batches, dispatched at intervals to move 20 kt/d (22,050 stpd). In operation, the pipeline has exceeded its 93% availability design factor. Pipeline Facilities Pump station No. 1 is located at the Germano minesite 1 km (3,330 ft) above sea level. It has the following principal equipment: • four 5 kt (5,510-st) (dry) agitate slurry storage tanks; • two centrifugal charge pumps (one stand-by); • a 217-m (712-ft) safety loop; • seven mainline positive displacement triplex plunger pumps (189 m3/h, or 832 gpm, at 14.9 MPa, or 2,162 psi, maximum output pressure); • four corrosion-erosion spools; • a control and command center. The Brewer Gold Mine is an open-pit, heap leach operation that processes about 122 kt/m (135,000 stpm). The mine is operated by Brewer Gold Inc., a subsidiary of Westmont Mining Inc., and is located near Jefferson, SC, about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Charlotte, NC and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Columbia, SC (Fig. 1). All of the ore to date has been produced from a breccia body of hydrothermal origin and a related smaller body of fault-controlled ore, known as the B-6. Reserves at the time the mine commenced production were 4.6 Mt (5.1 million st) grading 1.4 g/t (0.042 oz per st) gold. History Although some reports of a pre-Revolution War shaft at the Brewer are in the literature (Lieber, 1856, Nitze and Wilkens, 1897), gold was first produced in earnest from the Brewer Mine in 1828. Production occurred primarily from placer deposits south of the present mine workings. Lieber noted in 1856 that “every branch, gulch, ravine or even declivity of the main hill has been washed and rewashed.”

This work is a first-order study to assess the suitability of an organic acid lixiviant to extract rare earth elements (REE) from coal preparation fines refuse sourced from a Pennsylvania mine with a total REE of ~ 300 ppm. The extraction of REE using an organic acid, in this case 0.1Mcitric acid and 0.5Mtrisodium citrate solution, is compared against 0.5M(NH4)2SO4, 1MHCl, 1.2MH2SO4, and 0.5Methylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Ashing the coal waste material prior to leaching tests with the citrate solution nominally improved REE extraction. Buffered citrate solution recovered 7% of the total REE in the as-received Isabella Fines as compared to 11% in ashed samples, whereas (NH4)2SO4 extracted 5–6%, respectively. EDTA recovered up to 33%of the total REE, most likely due to the higher coordination chelate bond. Mineral acids, however, outperformed the organic acids on ashed material (16–52%REE recovery), suggesting that organic acids may not be a suitable competitive option for REE extraction from these types of feedstocks.

In a Bureau of Mines study two-dimensional mathematical equations were solved that describe the transient thermal response of a rock dust particle in a cloud of similar particles in a gas flame's preheat zone subject to a radiant field from the approaching flame. The description includes both radiant energy absorbed and emitted by the particle and thermal conduction inside the particle and into the surrounding gas environment moving relative to the particle. Two situations were studied; in one the radiant energy incident on the particle is converted to thermal energy at the particle surface, and in the other the radiant energy is converted to thermal energy uniformly over the volume of the particle. The result of the study showed that for a 10-µm-radius particle, a 200-mg 1-1 loading density, and a flame approach velocity of 30 m sec-1, the particle temperature rise was twice that previously calculated by Singer and Cook based on the model of Essenhigh and Csaba. It was further established that under the conditions examined a rock dust particle temperature never increases more than about 200 K before crossing the flame front.

AT a joint meeting of the Tulsa Geological Society and the Mid-Continent Section of the A; I. M. E., held at Tulsa on March 21, the history of unit development in the Kettle- man Hills field was discussed. Robert C. Patterson? Super- visor for the U. S. Geological Survey at Taft, Calif., was the speaker. An abstract of some of his remarks follows: On July 1, 1923, curtailment agreement for two years was made between the operators of North Dome Kettleman and the U. S. Department of the Interior. In this it was agreed to consider a plan of unit development, or other cooperate method of developing the structure. As a result, Kettleman North Dome Association was incorporated in December, 1930, as a non-profit cooperative corporation under the laws of California. Approved in January, 1931, by California Oil and Gas Supervisor and by Secretary of Interior. On Feb. 10, 1931, it became an active organization through election of executive officers and eleven- directors. General manager chosen. Association started to function April 1, 1931. Assumed control of 10,800 acres of proved and semi-proved land, as shown in Table 1.

A series of investigations were made by the Mine Safety and Health Administration to evaluate the performance of various face ventilation systems as part of a program to reduce frictional ignitions of methane and to develop face ventilation systems that could be used with the line brattice more than 10 feet from the face. Tests were conducted in a full-scale laboratory model of a face area. Systems tested included unassisted blowing and exhaust line brattice, diffuser fan and spray fan systems. Systems were evaluated at air quantities ranging from 1.4 to 7.0 m3/s (3,000 to 15,000 cfm), and brattice-to-face distances from 1.5 to 9 meters (5 to 30 feet.). Tests were designed so that systems could be evaluated for the location of the high-point methane concentration in the face area, methane dilution capacity, and face ventilation index. The methane dilution capacity is the total amount of methane a system can dilute to 1.0 volume-percent. The face ventilation index is the efficiency at which the available face air volume is being used.

  This paper describes the design and construction of the upper section of the Pike River Mine Access Road. The road extends 11 km from Logburn Road alongside Big River on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand up Pike Stream to the new mine portal on White Knight Stream (Figure 1). This new road starts on alluvial terraces, then partially follows an old logging road before entering virgin bush and traversing the true left bank of a steep sided gorge on Pike Stream some 50 - 100 m above the stream before dropping down to the mine entrance. Its development has been an extended process from route selection, consenting through to design and construction.   The paper focuses on the 1 km section of road between the Amenities Area (Figure 1) and the portal. This section of road is a steep section through the gorge, principally on Conservation estate, and has presented the most challenges and required the greatest effort to obtain the regulatory approvals, prepare the design and to construct. This paper outlines the history of the challenges faced and how the road was successfully developed.

In the german hard-coal mining industry the mechanization of longwall faces and the machinery used for the extraction process have reached such an extent, that an extensive increase in productivity and face performance is not likely to be expected. At present, the greatest amount of man-shifts is needed for operations such as tunneling, transportation and haulage (fig. 1.). The most restrictive parameter, especially considering the possible ad- [ ] vance rate of faces, is the comparatively low advance rate achieved in drifting operations. Therefore improvements in productivity and advance rates of drifting operations will have considerable influence onto the extraction rate of the faces. The importance of drifting operations - and especially the so-called "conventional drifting by drilling and blasting" within the scope of long- term planning strategy of the german hard-coal mining industry is reflected by the development factor. This factor is given by the ratio: cubic meters of rock excavated in drifting per 1.000 tons saleable coal produced. In 1973, which is considered to be the beginning of the oil-crisis, this factor was determined to be 17.7 m3/ 1.000 tons sale- able coal.

The Stillwater pt-pd mine and flotation mill are located about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Billings in Stillwater county, M6ntana~ The pt-pd ore zone stretches about 43 km (27 miles), but varies in thickness from 0 to 6 meters (0 to 20 feet, but generally 3-6 feet) and dips 55-90,degrees from horizontal. The ore is hosted in basic, layered igneous rocks containing about 1% sulfide minerals which include chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and minor pyrite. The pt-Pd minerals are intimately associated with these sulfide minerals and are found as precious metal sulfides, tellurides, bismuthnides, and arsenides as well as native Pt metal. Approximately 90 different precious metal minerals have been found, but about 80% of the pd is in solid solution in the pentlandite. The ore assays about 0.1% Cu, 0.1% Ni, 6.2 g Pt/tonne (0.18 Troy ounce Pt/short ton (opt)), 21.3 g Pd/tonne (0.62 opt Pd), 0.21 g Au/tonne (0.006 opt Au), and 0.21 g Rh/tonne (0.006 opt Rh). The ratio of pd to Pt in the Stillwater ore and concentrates is about 3.5.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Mining Engineering) degree The Union Section of Anglo Platinum is situated ±18 km west of the town of Northam on the north-western rim of the Bushveld Igneous Complex. Both the Merensky and UG2 reefs are mined. Support of the Merensky stoping areas with rock bolts is specifically problematic due to the stoping width restrictions varying around 90 cm. The installation equipment of in-stope rock bolts and the effectiveness thereof in the Merensky stoping areas was critically evaluated. In order to do this a background research on the need for better on-the-face support had to be conducted. The need for improving the rock bolt drilling and the equipment had to be investigated and the financial implications and justifications for the improved equipment examined. To conduct the search an overall study was done on the rockfalls and safety aspects throughout the platinum industry in South Africa and specifically Union Section. It was found that most of the rock falls in the Merensky stoping areas of which ± 70% are less than 1.2 m in thickness generally occurs within 4 m from the face and causes ± 60% of the in-stope injuries. Serious shortcomings had been identified with respect to the airleg, rock drill machine and the drill steels used in the drilling of the rock bolt holes. Through experimentation, using a testing frame built for this purpose on surface and with the co-operation of mine staff and suppliers, a number of possible modifications were identified and tested. This resulted in the final product with which it was possible to drill a 1.2 m hole in the hangingwall of the stopes ranging with an angle to the hanging from 90° for a 90 cm stoping width and 67° for a 80 cm stoping width. It is confidently concluded that this system will effectively improve the total face support and result in a substantial reduction of rock falls and consequently the occurrence of injuries and fatalities in the Merensky stoping areas. The installation of rock bolts on the face with the modified drilling equipment will increase the direct support, but the system has a potential of a substantial reduction in the profile stick support density and an increase in productivity in the stoping areas due to fewer occurrences of rock falls. It was finally concluded that effective modifications to the drilling equipment for rock bolt in-hole drilling could be made and the installation thereof in the stope face is adequately justified.

"AbstractHigh strain dynamic pile tests (HSDPT) on driven piles have been carried out on a routine basis in Sweden for more than 30 years. The Swedish Commission on Pile research established, in the early 1980s, safety factors based on the percentage of piles tested. The safety factors could then be reduced, creating economic incentives for the contractor to carry out testing.Energy formulas adopted by our neighbour countries, Norway and Denmark, were not accepted in Sweden as a reliable method since the dynamic testing method was considered to be a more scientific and reliable method. It has become almost the only in-situ method used to verify geotechnical bearing capacity on driven piles.The typical Swedish geology of soft soils overlaying very hard strata makes it possible to verify high design loads, typically 20 kN per cm2 of pile cross sectional area for steel piles and 1,5 kN per cm2 for concrete piles.Conventionally a certain percentage of the piles have been tested in Sweden. The EC7, on the other hand states a number of piles to be tested, regardless of the total number of piles. The Swedish NA (National Annex) states a maximum distance between tested piles, which results in better distribution of the test piles over the foundation.For shaft-bearing piles in soft clays, dynamic pile tests have to be correlated by static load tests.Historical backgroundOn a research basis stress-wave measurements have been carried out for a long time in Sweden. One example is a project in the city of Gothenburg, conducted by Fellenius and Pejrud (1964). Strain gauges were glued on the reinforcement bars in 60 m long, precast concrete piles at 3 m and 25 m above the pile tip respectively. Evaluation was done with different methods such as dynamic formulas,stress-wave measurements and in addition compared with static load tests.In the 1975 Building Code in Sweden, driving criteria for concrete piles based on stress-wave theory were introduced, as summarized in Table 1. The driving criteria are intended for 3 and 4 tonne gravity hammers. For hydraulic rigs, which have free-falling hammers, the drop height indicated should be reduced to 80 % of the values in the table. The criteria were considered to include a safety factor of 3,0. For 330 - 450 kN pile load, pile with a standard a cross sectional area of 235 mm x 235 mm was used. For 600 kN load, the standard cross sectional area was 275 mm x 275 mm."

Intense vibration can be transmitted to the hands and arms of workers who use hand-held percussive or vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. Continued habitual exposure to vibration directed to the hands can cause patterns of various symptoms associated with hand-arm vibration syndrome (HVAS). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) first published ISO 5349 in 1986.3 This standard specified methods for measuring and evaluating vibration directed into the hands from hand-held vibrating devices, tools, and work pieces. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) published ANSI S3.34 the same year.1 This standard was modeled after ISO 5349-1986 and specified methods for assessing exposure to hand-arm vibration. The Parliament of the European Union has issued the European Union Human Vibration Directive-2002/44/EC, which specifies vibration daily exposure action values (DEAV) of 2.5 m/s2 and daily exposure limit values (DELV) of 5.0 m/s2. These values have generally been accepted by medical experts, scientists, and engineers in governmental agencies, research institutions, and industry in the USA and other countries.2 When they are achieved, they will reduce the potential for the development of symptoms related to HAVS among workers exposed to hand-arm vibration. Significant improvements in measurement and analysis instrumentation, miniature and subminiature accelerometers, and medical diagnostic and assessment protocols have being introduced since 1986 when ANSI S3.34 was first published. "Testing of the NIOSH-designed roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) has gone through many iterations demonstrating successful dust control performance under controlled conditions. J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Fletcher), an original equipment manufacturer of mining equipment, has further developed the CAC concept by incorporating it into the design of its roof bolting machines. A new CAC design has been developed incorporating the results of testing of the NIOSH design and the recent Fletcher design. Observations from smoke testing conducted on this new CAC design in a laboratory setting show promise for improved performance. INTRODUCTION Exposure to respirable coal mine dust can cause coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) otherwise known as black lung. If silica is present in the dust, the miner may develop silicosis in addition to CWP. CWP and silicosis are occupational respiratory diseases that are ultimately fatal and have no cure. The only method of prevention is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit (on an MRE basis) for respirable coal mine dust is 2.0 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities [30 CFR 70.100 2015]. Recently enacted legislation changes this standard beginning in August 2016 to 1.5 mg/m3 for a full working shift [Federal Register, 2014]. If the respirable coal mine dust contains more than 5% silica, the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced; calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present [30 CFR 70.101] so that the effective exposure limit for respirable quartz is 0.1 mg/m3 for a full working shift. Sources of exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolting occupations include infrequent maintenance and cleaning of the vacuum dust collection system and operating the bolter downwind (in the return air) of the continuous miner [Goodman and Organiscak, 2003]. Recent studies have demonstrated that vacuum dust collection systems are effective in capturing bolter-generated dust, if maintained and operated correctly and if proper face ventilation techniques are used. However, most exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolter occurs when the roof bolter machine is operated downwind of the continuous miner [Potts et al., 2011; Colinet et al., 2013]. Because of this higher exposure downwind of the continuous miner, the roof bolter is generally limited to working downwind of the miner only once during a production shift"

"Engineering practices have shown that the skip-fault longwall mining is frequently used when faults with offsets larger than 1 Om are present. Since the skip-fault longwall mining not only reduces the recovery rate of coal reserves, but also increases the cost due to developing another setup room on the opposite side of the fault and moves the longwall into it. The coal pillar so created induced residual stress in and thus affects the safe mining of adjacent coal seams. In order to investigate the influence on panel layout and retreat by a l 6.5m offset normal fault, the similar material simulation model was constructed based on the geological and engineering conditions of No.13 coal seam in the western district of Liuzhuang coal mine employing the down-dip longwall mining. The characteristics of deformation, movement and failure of the overlying strata and abutment pressure when the face cut through the hangingwall and footwall of a normal fault were obtained. There were significant differences between the hangingwall and footwall as conformed by the equilibrium structure model. The results showed that superposition of the tectonic stress from a normal fault of large offset and that induced by mining is one of key factors that lead the severe pressure difficult to control during panel retreating from the hangingwall to footwall. Accordingly, the technical solutions for a fully mechanized mining face directly cutting through the fault are presented and optimized, and the applications of the technical solution in Panels 171301and171303 of Liuzhuang mine enabled them to complete the mining safely and efficiently. INTRODUCTIONFaults have been one of the important technical factors in underground coal mining l1-2i. Engineering practice has shown that the methods of mining through the faults depend on the seam thickness, seam dip angle, offset of fault throw, equipment height, rock strength, and advancing direction l3-5l. In the fully-mechanized longwall mining, the face normally proceeds to cut through the fault directly if the offset of the fault less than 5m, and to skip Uump) the fault if the offset is larger than 5m. In the former case, the most important problem is to efficiently control or avoid roof fall accidents (i.e., crushing, falling, pushover, and rock burst). In the latter case, the most important problem is very expensive to drive a new setup room and move the face equipment to it. The skipped coal pillar may poses problems for mining in adjacent seams."

"The Level Crossing Removal Project – Package 1 is part of the Victorian Governments commitment to remove 50 of the most dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne. This involved removing three crossings on the Frankston Line in the south east suburbs of Melbourne. The works involved replacing approximately 2.5km of at grade track with three rail cuttings up to 8 m deep at each of the bridges that replace the level crossings. The cuttings are retained by piled retaining walls and during the main construction occupation approximately 250,000 cubic metres of soil was removed. The project has presented significant geotechnical challenges due to the location in residential suburbs and tight rail corridor and rail occupation timeframe. These challenges included temporary and permanent wall stability, foundations, earthworks and dewatering. As a result, careful design and innovative construction techniques have been necessary to limit impacts on the community. The geotechnical challenges generally fell into one of three areas, earthworks, structures and groundwater. The primary earthworks challenge for the project was moving the 250,000 cubic metres of soil in a 10 day window, however, from a geotechnical viewpoint, obtaining a stable subgrade on which to operate the necessary construction plant in a short time frame with constrained site access and time to import materials was the key. Whilst closely watching the performance of the dewatering system, a range of contingency plans were developed to cope with any difficulties."

Carbon rich graphite deposits found in Sri Lanka are of inorganic origin and they occur as narrow steeply dipping veins. The vein width of these deposits varies from a few centimetres to metres, with an average vein thickness of 1 m. It is believed that the carbon rich fluid intruded into fracture zones under high pressure and the temperature has crystallised into graphite. This process has also generated many minuscule graphite veins centred on main mineralisation, which has reduced the host rock overall rock mass rating. These discontinuities could also be considered as joints with graphite infill. Graphite mining at Bogala Mines, Sri Lanka is a unique example of narrow vein mining faced with numerous wall stability issues resulting from weak graphite infilled joints.The Bogala vein type graphite orebody has an average vein width of 1 m. Overhand cut-and-fill mining method is used for stoping. The stope consists of two boundary winzes for material handling, access and ventilation. Mining is done on the strike of the vein and the average mining slice height is 2 m. A void to the height of one mined slice is left below the mining level during mining. Waste rock resulting from vein blasting and mine development is dropped into this void as fill rock. Any void height left greater than a single slice height will increase stresses in the stoping zone. This will increase formation of rock blocks and their effective separation from wall rocks. Split miniscule veins occurring around main mineralisation intensifies rock block formation in an environment of mining induced stress release. Consequently, any rock blocks sliding into stopes on graphite infilled joints will behave under constant normal stiffness (CNS) conditions and their shear strength will converge rapidly towards remoulded shear strength of graphite alone. Unlike with general infill deposited in joints, graphite has a very low friction angle and with its slippery nature, a small thickness may affect in great deal to reduce joint shear strength.In addition to immediate filling of excavated voids, controlled vein blasting and spot bolting have improved mine safety. Furthermore, rock bolts connected to each other through iron plates and anchored to anchor bolts installed in non-fractured solid rock are practiced to stabilise rock falls and wedge failures in narrow vein graphite mining.
