Two marine diamond deposits on concession 2b off Namaqualand along the South African Coast, have been systematically mined over the past year by the mv Moonstar. The two deposits, Smith?s Ulcer and Wedge Point Basin, are comparable in morphology, straddled the same water depths and have similar geology yet have given very different recoveries when compared to their respective grade models. These differences are best ascribed to the different style of mineralisation observed within the two deposits which has been directly controlled by the bedrock morphology. The smith?s Ulcer deposit has been formed in a metagreywacke bedrock displaying a strong north-south trending foliation which dips steeply to the west. Consequently the mineralisation is confined to narrow north-south linear trends with limited lateral extent (less than 5m) making extraction extremely difficult and somewhat variable. RE factors (recovered grade versus estimated grade) for this deposit range from 0.5 to 1.1. The Wedge Point Basin deposit is formed in a micaceous metaquartzite with a conjugate southwest northwest joint set, the southwest lineation being the more prominent, and structural foliation dipping gently to the west. The resultant style of mineralisation is confined to basinal features defined by topographical lows and is fairly lateral in extent (in order of 50m). Extraction of the mineralisation from this deposit is less arduous with recoveries more uniform, RE factors are frequently in the range 2 - 3. This style of mineralisation is more in line with what is to be expected from marine alluvial deposits, the nugget effect of diamond concentration being responsible for the high RE factor. The long narrow linear trends observed in Smith?s Ulcer demonstrably require a specialised approach in successfully sampling, modeling and ultimately mining.

In open cast mining of coal, the cost per ton of output is four to five times less and labor productivity five to six times higher than in under- ground mining. This is why the coal industry of the USSR is oriented toward giving priority to the development of open cast coal mining. Deposits of coal which lend themselves to open cast mining in the USSR are enormous, with 90% of them located in the eastern part of the country. The technique is by no means limited to the eastern part, however-despite wide variations in climate, other parts of the Soviet Union also use open cast mining. The occurrence and type of coal deposits in the USSR vary greatly. Some of them are flat coal seams 2 to 40 m thick, and a few are even thicker. There are also deposits having a complex mode of occurrence, such as a series of seams of different thicknesses with angles of dip varying from slightly inclined to steep, often with dislocations. Overburden materials are quite diverse with regard to physical and mechanical properties. There are three kinds encountered-loose or unconsolidated overburden, medium-hard material, and hard rock. The stripping ratio, i.e., the amount of cover per ton of mined coal, varies from 1 to 12 cu m per ton. SYSTEMS OF MINING The great diversity of natural conditions has brought forth a variety of technologies and techniques in the open cast mining of coal. In open cast practice, the following systems of mining are used : (1) a transportation system in which the overburden is transported to spoil banks by rail or by truck; (2) a system with direct disposal of overburden, the rocks being dumped on spoil banks with a stripping excavator; and

New for the Conexpo-Conlagg '99 show is a 3,715- m2 (40,000-sq ft) Information Technology Pavilion. This event, organized by AIEIC Systems, will showcase computer technology for the architectural, engineering and construction industries. Shown in the pavilion will be the latest developments in cost management, estimating, bidding, project management and accounting. In addition, the Information Technology Pavilion will demonstrate the latest in computer-aided design software, systems and services. Conexpo-Codagg '99 will also emphasize live demonstrations of exhibitor's products. Individual exhibitors will demonstrate their machinery so attendees can see the latest technology in action. Because the Conexpo-Codagg exposition is so large, "shows within a show" have been created to help attendees locate the products and services best suited to their interests. The effectiveness of two synthesized ionic liquids, 1-(benzyloxy)-1-oxopropan-2-aminium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (1-BOPAMS) and 4-(benzyloxy)-4-oxobutan-1-aminium 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (4-BOBAMS), were evaluated for mild steel corrosion inhibition in 1.0 M hydro-chloric acid solution, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP), and gravimetric techniques. Organic moieties responsible for the adsorption process on mild steel surface were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Gravimetric analysis revealed that the inhibition efficiency of 1-BOPAMS and 4-BOBAMS increased with concentration, with maximum inhibition values of 90.32% and 97.91%, respectively, at the highest concentration of the inhibitors. Gibbs free energy (ΔG°ads) values indicated a strong interaction between the mild steel surface and the molecules of the ionic liquids, and that the adsorption process was spontaneous. These values also show that the inhibitive nature of ionic liquids against mild steel corrosion is caused by a mixedtype of adsorption film formed on the steel surface. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was used to describe the adsorption of ionic liquid molecules onto the mild steel surface. Polarization curves showed that 1-BOPAMS and 4-BOBAMS have a similar effect on both the anodic and cathodic half-reactions, indicating that they prevent the dissolution of mild steel through both physical and chemical process. Nyquist plots were defined by incomplete semicircle capacitive loops, showing that the charge transfer mechanism controls the corrosion of mild steel in acidic solution.

The requirements of the International Mineral Property Valuation Standards Template (IMVAL Template) (includes Petroleum), 4th edition of April 14, 2021, are based on six principles: 2.1.1 competence, 2.1.2 materiality, 2.1.3 transparency, 2.1.4 objectivity, 2.1.5 independence, and 2.1.6 reasonableness. The IMVAL Template describes “reasonableness” as, “The Valuer must ensure the Reasonableness of the Valuation. Any Valuation, assumptions applied, and any method relied upon should be reasonable within the context of the purpose of the Valuation and the Basis of Value. A method applied to the subject Mineral Property should be within the expected capability and consideration of an assumed likely buyer or lessee of the property.” The IMVAL Template’s Guidance 3.6 on Reasonableness states, “The test of Reasonableness is to consider what appropriately qualified and experienced Valuers, acting reasonably, would conclude in the circumstances. The Valuer must form an opinion that is reasonable in the circumstances, that is, what a Valuer believes is rational and plausible in the circumstances and would be viewed as such if considered by other appropriately qualified and experienced Valuers with the same information and at the same time.” Finally, the IMVAL Template’s Definition 4.26 states Reasonableness “[m]eans that other qualified and experienced Valuers with access to the same information for the same Valuation Date and Basis of Value would consider the Valuer's estimate of Value to be within a reasonable range.”

J. J. Predali and J. M. Cases (Attachè de Recherche and Charge de Recherche, respectively, Centre de Recherches sur la Valorisation des Minerais, Institut Polytechnique de Nancy, Nancy, France)-The role of CO, in carbonate flotation is one of the parameters of a complex phenomenon: the adsorption of salts of fatty acids onto minerals. The authors therefore must be congratulated for their work. Their experimental results suggest some questions: 1) Recovery with C02, benzoic acid, or HCl, look very similar [(Fig. 1)] to that with the use of air; however, the recovery decreases very slightly (<10%). But in these two kinds of experiments, two parameters are different: the pH which is near 5.8 (with C02) becomes 9.1(without C02) and the concentration of Ca* I x 10-3 mole per 1 (without C02) becomes 1.9 X 10&apos; mole per 1 (without COO. 2) Adsorption experiments (Fig. 2) permit computing the surface coverage 9 which is 7.4% (without C02) and 8% (without CO_.) for an initial concentration of 12 X 10-6 mole per 1 in sodium oleate. It seems doubtful to us that this small variation can produce large increases of the recovery in flotation. 3) It is difficult to correlate adsoption and flotation experiments because they do not seem to have been done with the same size of particles. The concentration needed to obtain 95% recovery (Fig. 1) is about 3.0 X 10_" mole per l, that is, 1.13 X 10-6 mole for about

This paper presents an experimental verification of numerical solutions of the differential equation describing the transient flow of an ideal gas through a porous material including gas slip effects. Several experiments previously proposed by one of the authors are described together with the correlation of the experimental results with the numerical solutions. Excellent agreement is shown between experiment and theory, thus demonstrating the validity of both the basic assumption made in the derivation of the differential equation and of the numerical solutions of the differential equation. INTRODUCTION In a recent paper,&apos; one of the authors has discussed a numerical solution of the differential equation describing the unsteady flow of an ideal gas through a porous material. This paper was primarily concerned with the effect of gas slip on the flow behavior. In steady state measurements, Klinkenberg2 and others have observed that the apparent gas permeability Kn of a porous material may be expressed as a linear function of the reciprocal average pressure 1/P of the form, ka = b + m/P........(1) where the intercept b is a constant for a given porous material and the slope m is a constant for a given porous material-gas combination. Aronofsky1 assumed that Equation (1) could be used to describe transient flow if P was replaced by the average pressure in an infinitesimal volume element. A number of numerical solutions of the resultant differential equation were presented and specific flow experiments were proposed as a means of testing the numerical solutions. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the results of several of these experiments and the correlation of the experimental data with the results of the numerical analysis. Reference should be made to the previous paper&apos; for details of the mathematical and numerical analysis. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A simplified schematic drawing of the experimental apparatus is shown in Fig. 1. An 8.89 cm diameter limestone core of length L = 14.82 cm was mounted in a conventional rubber sleeve permeameter cell. The external sleeve pressure in this cell was maintained equal to 500 psig during all experimental tests, thus permitting only longitudinal flow through the core. One end of the core, X = L, was connected to an adjustable cavity of volume V as well as a pressure gauge or manometer. The other end of the core, X = 0, was connected to a Nullmatic pressure regulator which was in turn connected to a nitrogen cylinder or vacuum pump. In each experiment, the core and adjacent dead volume were charged with nitrogen to a uniform gas pressure P1. The pressure at X = 0 was then suddenly raised or lowered to a constant pressure P, and the resulting pressure buildup or pressure decline at X — L was recorded as a function of the time. The porosity + and the permeability constants m and b were determined using the transient method which was suggested by the results of the numerical analysis and which was described in the earlier paper.&apos; The following average values for these constants were obtained as a result of 19 separate evaluations: 171 -0.259 2 0.005 md-atm; b = 0.374 5 0.008 md; and F = 0.098 ± 0.005*. It should be noted that in order that transient phenomena will be slow enough to be observed conveniently, it is desirable to use a porous material of very low permeability, e.g., less than I md. Moreover, it is in this low permeability range that the gas slip effects are most significant. Thus, such a low permeability sample is very suitable for use in an experimental verification of the numerical solutions previously described.

M. H. Mueller, M. V. Nevitt, and H. W. Knott (Argonne National Laboratory)—We have reported1 the crystal structure of Ti2CU as body centered tetragonal with a. = 2.944A and co = 10.786A, six atoms per unit cell, and space groupl4/mmm(MoSi2 type). This cell is larger but definitely related to the unit cell reported by the authors. It permits definite positions for the titanium and copper atoms in the cell located as follows: 2 Cu (a) 0 0 0; 1/2 1/2 1/2 4 Ti (e) 0 0 z; 1/2 1/2 1/2 + z; 0 0z; 1/2 1/2 1/2- z where z = 0.341 The face centered tetragonal cell reported by the authors can be transformed to a small body centered tetragonal cell with flo (small bet) = ao(fct)v2 Both unit cells have the same CO. Neither the face centered tetragonal cell with four atoms per unit cell nor the small body centered tetragonal cell with its two atoms per unit cell lend themselves conveniently to an orderly arrangment of the 2 to 1 ratio of titanium to copper atoms. When the co of this small body centered cell is tripled, however, a large body centered tetragonal cell results with six atoms per unit cell as described above. We had also noted that the X-ray patterns of Ti2Cu indicated that the structure could be approximately described by the face centered tetragonal cell as reported by the authors; how- ever, there was evidence for a few additional very weak lines whose positions indicated a larger unit cell. Since the X-ray scattering amplitudes of titanium and copper are nearly equal, it is evident that it is difficult to distinguish their positions especially from X-ray powder patterns. It was therefore decided to look at a powder pattern obtained by neutron diffraction since the scattering amplitudes of the two elements are considerably different in magnitude and opposite in sign. The sample used for neutron diffraction was selected from a group of three alloys prepared by arc melting using crystal bar titanium of 99.92 pet nominal purity and 99.999 pet pure Cu. The alloys designated as A, B, and C had the following respective compositions: Ti-32.8 at. pet Cu, Ti-33.3 at. pet Cu, and Ti-33.8 at. pet Cu. On the basis of the melting losses incurred, it was established that the actual concentration of either component in any of the alloys probably did not deviate from the intended value by as much as 0.1 at. pet. The alloys were annealed for 5 days at 700°C in evacuated Vycor capsules and quenched in tap water. The metallographic structures of these alloys are shown in Fig. 1. None of the alloys contained sufficient second phase to permit its positive identification. Since alloy B contained the least amount of second phase and since its composition placed it closest to the ideal stoichiometry, it was chosen for the neutron diffraction study. The oxygen content of alloy B was found by chemical analysis to be 0.06 at. pet. This particular intermetallic compound is especially suitable for investigation with neutron diffraction since if the titanium and copper atoms have a random statistical distribution, a near null-matrix would result in which there would be practically no coherent scattering of neutrons, and hence no Bragg diffraction peaks. The effect of hydrogen peroxide (H202) on growth and respiration of Thiobacillus thiooxidans and Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, organisms involved in acid leaching of copper sulfide minerals and uarnium oxides, was examined. Oxygen uptake and growth by T. thiooxidans were totally inhibited after contact with 0.82 mM H202. Complete inhibition of oxygen uptake by T. ferrooxidans occurred at 8.75 mM H202, and growth was inhibited after 6 hr exposure to 2.06 mM H202. Higher concentration of H202 can be used without detriment to thiobacilli if it is dissipated prior to reaching the oxidation pond or dump surface.

INTRODUCTION Radioactive deposits were observed in 1972 in some of the Upper Silesian coal mines. They were located mainly in the drains in galeries and on the inside surfaces of water pipes. They also caused some problems by accumulating in water pumps. It has been postulated that the deposits are produced by natural radioactive waters seeping from the rocks. Investigations were initiated to answer the following questions: - What is the composition and the amount of radioactivity in the deposits? - What radioisotopes are present in the water? - How are the radioactive deposits formed? - Do the radioactive waters also occur in other mines? - How does the radioactivity of the water depend on chemical composition? - What is the origin of the radioactive water? - Does the water and the deposits cause radiation hazards for miners? -How can the radiation hazard be reduced? METHODS OF MEASUREMENT Determination of Radium Isotopes in Water The commonly used methods of radium determination in water are either based on measurements of the radioactivity of 222Rn which is in equilibrium with 226Ra, or on the detection of alpha particles of the radium radioisotopes after chemical separation of radium from the water sample. The method based on radon activity measurements is very sensitive and does not require any chemical Separation, but it can be used for determination of 226Ra from the uranium series only, because the thorium daughter 220Rn has too short a half-life (55s to yield the required accuracy. The method developed by Goldin, 1961 [2] involved alpha-particle measurements in thin layers of RaS04 and BaS04 separated from the water. This method is not convenient for saline water and water with high barium concentration because the amount of barium carrier in this case is too large to obtain a thin layer of precipitate with sufficient activity. The Upper Silesian carboniferous waters are often saline with high barium content, so the method described by Goldin was not convenient for this case and it was necessary to change the detection system and modify the chemical preparation. The procedure developed by the authors for the determination of radium isotopes in water was as follows: - Depending on the Ba2+ content and the required sensitivity of measurement, a water sample of 200 cm3 to 3 dm3 was taken. - 10 cm3 of 0.25 M citric acid and 5 cm3 15M ammonia was added to form complex Ba2+ ions and avoid the immediate precipitation of BaSO4. (This was repeated as long as the addition of BaC12 did not form a precipitate.) - 1 cm3 of 1N solution of Pb(N03)2 as a carrier for radioactive isotopes of lead and 10 cm3 of 0.1 N BaC12 as a carrier for radium were added. - The sample was heated to the boiling point and the precipitation of RaS04, BaSO4 and PbS04 with 50% H2SO4 was carried out. - After several hours the sample was centrifuged and the precipitate was purified by washing with nitric acid and distilled water. - The precipitate was then redisolved in 20 cm3 0.125 M Na2EDTA and 3 cm3 6M ammonia and reprecipitated from the solution by dropwise addition of acetic acid to d pH of 4.5. At this value of pH, precipitation occurs only for the barium and radium sulfates, while lead and all other radioactive elements remain in the solution. The date and time of deposit precipitation was recorded. - The final barium-radium sulfate mixture was washed with distilled water and transferred to standard measurement vials. - Each vial containing a deposit had 6 cm3 of distilled water added and was then shaken vigorously. 12 cm3 of liquid gelling scintillator (INSTA-GEL UNISOLV-1 type) was then added and the vi 1 was shaken again. After a while the scintillator turns into a milky gel in which the deposit is uniformly distributed. - The standard sample of 226Ra was prepared in the same way. - The activity of the samples was measured using a liquid scintillation spectrometer. (In this case the TRICARB 3320 produced by Packard Instruments, was used). Tests run on standard radium solutions provided by Amersham Radiochemical Centre indicated that this method of measurement enables one to achieve an efficiency of almost 100% (within measurement error). For alpha particles no quenching effect was observed for the BaS04 concentration in the range up to 80 mg of BaS04 per 1 cm3 of liquid scintillator coctail (Fig. 1). "Microseismic monitoring technology has become one of the most effective method of mine ground pressure monitoring after decades of development. But safety assessment of mine ground pressure by using microseismic monitoring is still in the development stage, it needs to be perfected continuously in practice, and choose the optimal assessment indexes and methods. The definitions and physical meanings of wave velocity, b value, and EI-VA value are introduced in this paper. Statistical calculation of the microseismic events in Luomu Mine is finished by using these indexes, then the functions and calculation results of V, b value, and EI-VA value with the variable of time are also given in the paper. The preliminary safety assessment method is established in Luomu Mine, and it has achieved good results in practical application.1.1 Engineering background The Luomu Mine is a super large molybdenum and tungsten production base in China, ore reserves is up to 2 billion tons, first in Asia and third in the world. It begins mining since the 1960. and bases on underground mining until 2002. In order to recover resources more effectively, it began to use opencast mining method and formed a production of 30000t/d in the early 1990. After about 30 years of underground mining, a large mined out spaces was formed under open pit mine, up to area of 1.2 million m2 and volume of 18 million m3, as shown in figure 1. The large number of mined out spaces seriously affects the normal production, mining and handling of mined out spaces are in the high risk. In the past years, several rock mass collapsions happened, and it caused a serious security threat to persons and equipments. According to the distribution characteristics of mined out spaces, Luomu Mine is divided into A, B, C, D and E mining area. The stability of D mining area is studied in this article. D mining area mainly includes 1376,1350,1340,1317 mined out spaces and 1280 deep large mined out area, as shown in figure 2. The mined out spaces of D mining area is extremely complex and high-risk. Therefore, a microseismic monitoring system was built to monitor the stability of D mining area, a large number of valuable datum has been obtained, and it has a striking effect (Cheng & Peng, 2013; Peng et al., 2013)."

"The heat transfer conditions on the outer side of a Sirosmelt lance have been determined using experimental measurements in combination with a mathematical model. By measuring the temperature distribution along the wall of an operating Sirosmelt lance, as well as the thickness of the slag layer on it, it was possible to use the model to determine both the heat transfer coefficient between the vessel contents and the lance, as well as the effective thermal conductivity of the slag layer. The effective thermal conductivity of the slag layer was found to be within the range 0.7-1.3 W.m-1. ºCl, which was in good agreement with measured values for magnetite. The outside heat transfer coefficient varied from 80 to ISO W.m-2. ºC1, which was smaller than quoted in the literature for metal/slag systems. The discrepancy was attributed to the high thermal resistance experienced between the lance wall and the slag layer, as well as the large quantities of combustion gases that envelop the lance tip and reduce convection and conduction from the melt to the lance. INTRODUCTIONThe Sirosmelt submerged combustion smelting process [1] utilizes top injection lances to deliver fuel and air into a metallurgical melt. To help prevent lance failure from attack by liquid slag, helical vane swirlers are used within the annular lance to impart swirl to the flowing air and enhance the heat transfer from the lance wall to the air. The swirlers thus cool the wall, and enable a frozen layer of slag to form on its outer surface. This solid layer ensures liquid slag cannot reach the lance surface, and the lance is protected.A mathematical model of the heat transfer processes associated with the lance has been developed, which combines heat balance equations with engineering correlations to predict the wall and cooling air temperature of the lance, as well as the air pressure distribution. An account of the model was given by Rankin et al. [2]. To further enhance the model and enable it to predict the thickness of slag accumulating on the lance, a detailed analysis of the heat flow through the slag layer commenced in 1992. "The Teck Highland Valley copper (THVC) mine is located approximately 55 km (34 miles) southwest of Kamloops and approximately 20 km (12 miles) west of Logan Lake, BC, Canada (Fig. 1). Mining at THVC is conducted at three openpit operations comprised of Valley, Lornex and Highmont with a total annual output on the order of 300 kt (330,000 st) copper concentrate and 5 kt (5,500 st) of molybdenum concentrate. The Phase 8 pushback in the Valley Pit (Fig. 2) was mined from 2011 to 2016. Successful slope steepening occurred in the later stage of the pushback with the implementation of presplit blasting in 2015 and 2016.This article summarizes the investigation and design approach including: structural analysis, kinematic assessments of bench breakback potential, development of discrete fracture networks (DFNs) to characterize discontinuity fabric, rockfall modelling, 2D anisotropic limit equilibrium and 2D distinct element modelling, assessment of potential kinematic failure modes affecting double benches with 3D distinct element modelling and improved blasting techniques using e-dets. THVC is currently undertaking a mine life expansion involving the pushback of the west wall of the Valley Pit above Phase 8 to extend the mine life to 2029. Engineering geologyThe east wall slope in the Valley Pit is comprised of a 350-m (1,148-ft) thick sequence of glacial valley sediments that occur along the Highland Valley (Fig. 2), exposing an overburden slope up to about 225-m (740-ft) high below the crest of the ultimate east wall. The glacial overburden units consist of pro-glacial outwash and glaciofluvial deposits, glacial outwash sands and gravels interbedded with till and alluvial fans consisting of cross-bedded sands and sandy-gravels. Lacustrine sediments occur within the mid to lower portion of the glacial sequence and contain intervals of low-shear-strength clays and silts. Two large (1.3 and 7 Mt or 1.4 and 7.7 million st) waste rock buttresses were required to maintain slope stability using slot-cut and fill mining methods, as described in Fortin et al. (2011).The Valley porphyry deposit occurs in the central portion of the late Upper Triassic Guichon Creek Batholith, which intrudes assemblages of the Permian Cache Creek and Upper Triassic Nicola groups. The Valley deposit occurs in an area of intense fracturing near the intersection of the northerly trending Lornex Fault and the northwest to westerly trending Highland Valley Fault."

"The 13.2 m (43 ft) external diameter, double deck Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing is one of the most challenging underwater tunnel projects in the world. Subjected to 11 bars of hydrostatic pressure, variable geology, and being in a very active seismic area, the execution of the project required innovative solutions, sophisticated construction techniques and prudent risk management approach. The 5 km (3.1 mile) tunnel consists of a 3.4-km (2.2-mile) tunnel boring machine- (TBM) bored tunnel, 1 km (0.62 mile) twin NATM tunnels and cut-and-cover sections. The project is being delivered in a build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract in a public-private partnership. The technical challenges, coupled with financial and commercial risks required the implementation of sophisticated risk management tactics including the provision of independent design verification. The project was opened to traffic on December 20, 2016, four months ahead of schedule.. This article presents the technical challenges of the project from the design, construction, and risk management aspects..Project backgroundThe $1.245 billion Istanbul Strait Road Tunnel Crossing project, dubbed the Eurasia Tunnel, is one of several major infrastructure projects being implemented in the Republic of Turkey in a public-private partnership approach. The project provides a direct and easy connection between the Anatolian (Asian) side of Istanbul and the heart of its historical district on the European side across the Bosphorus Strait which connects the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara. The project improves connections to a wide network of motorways on both sides, increase capacity across the Bosphorus by 100,000 vehicles a day, reduces congestion and saves motorists an average of 45 minutes of commuting time in each direction bringing significant economic benefits to the city and the region. It eases traffic across the strait, reduces congestion, decreases pollutants and emission while maintaining Bosphorus. It is the most complex part of the project with the greatest challenges and risks. Part 2 is 5.4 km (3.6 miles) long consisting of 3.4 km (2.2 miles) of 13.2 m ( 43.3 ft) external diameter TBM bored tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, 1-km (0.62-miles) of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side, cut-and-cover transition boxes in the Asian and the European sides and depressed approaches on both sides. In addition, this segment includes the toll plazas, ventilation buildings, and the tunnel control and maintenance facilities."

Uranium is conventionally extracted using a process that employs strong acid (H2SO4) and an oxidant (MnO2) as leaching agents. This method often creates environmental problems, requires large amounts of energy, and involves a complex operational plant. It is not, however, economically attractive to extract uranium from low-grade ores by chemical leaching. Because the content of U3O8 in the Indian ore is usually below 0.1% by weight, it is necessary to develop an alternative process to enable the efficient and economic recovery of uranium. Uranium ore from the Narwapahar mines, UCIL is a type of vein deposit found in India, which accounts for ~54% in India. The ore (0.047% U3O8), though of Singhbhum area, possess exceptionally different mineralogy due to presence of some refractory minerals and richness of apatite (5%) resulting in a maximum 78% recovery through conventional processing at UCIL, with a very high consumption of sulfuric acid and pyrolusite, besides possible loss of uranium as uranium phosphate. To avoid usage of environmentally non-benign oxidants, remediation of influence of phosphates, and improve the overall process output of uranium; an alternate extraction technology using microbial isolate(s) is worthwhile exploring and the same is presented in the paper. The microbial isolate enriched with Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans grown from source mine water was employed for bio-leaching of uranium while varying pH, pulp density (PD), particle size, etc. On varying pH at 35oC using 20%(w/v) PD and <75µm particle size, 83.5% and 78% uranium bio-recovery were observed at 1.7 and 2.0 pH in 40 days against maximum recovery of 46% and 41% metal in control experiments respectively. Whereas, it was observed that grinding of ore to finer size actually helped dissolution of uranium. Finer size particles (<45µm) gave a maximum biorecovery of 93% in 40days at 10%(w/v) PD, 1.7 pH and 35oC. The bio-recovery of uranium fell down from 93% to 82.73% and 60% on increasing the pulp density from 10% to 20% and 30% respectively for particles of <45µm size. The higher uranium dissolution during bioleaching at 1.7pH can be correlated with increase in redox potential from 433 mV to 664mV in 40 days.
