A series of controlled seismic experiments was performed in a limestone quarry in southern Germany to study seismic effects of cylindrical charges fired in both a half space (HS) (burden 63 m) and quarter space (QS) (burdens of 3 and 3.5 m) geometry. Charge columns contained from 20-32 kg of explosives and initiated from the bottom. The explosives formed a cylinder 4 m (20 kg) and 5 m (32 kg) high and 90 mm in diameter at depths from 3-8 m below ground level. Prior to each of the larger explosions, small charges of 0.12 kg seismogelit were fired at 4 m and 8 m depths in the same boreholes. Seismograms were obtained from 23 three component surface stations and up to 10 three component borehole stations (6 m depth). For each experiment, stations were located on three linear profiles of length 72 m at different azimuths from the source and one semicircular profile at a constant range of 30 m.

The Cape Breton Development Corporation is a federally owned Crown corporation in Canada that operates two coal mines the Prince and Phalen Colliery in the Province of Nova Scotia. Retreat longwall mining was first introduced to the shallower workings (I 80m) of Prince Colliery in the early 1980's. Phalen Colliery started longwall retreating in 1987 and since that time has extracted twelve panels. In 1993 there had been a total of eight longwalls varying in widths from 140-230m mined in Phalen Colliery that is on the Phalen Seam. Up to this point there were only minor ground control problems on the faces except for one of the earlier longwalls that was mining a split seam. There is some interaction on Phalen workings from remnant structures in the overlying Lingan and No. 26 Collieries which worked the Harbour Seam. Induced abutments loads along pillar edges have been observed and resulted in poor face conditions when mining the Phalen Seam. The ninth panel, 6 East was the first panel to suffer a major roof fall from the First Major Weighting. This was also the first panel to undermine a paleo sandstone river channel named the Lower Sandstone Unit (LSU). For the first time in Phalen's history subsequent longwalls began to experience periodic weighting events. The 6 East panel suffered a number of periodic weightings and on two occasions had to use foam cement to fill the cavities that resulted. On the next east side panel, 7 East, there were numerous periodic weighting events, but interestingly there was no significant First Major Weighting. 7 East was the first 260m wide panel and all others were 230m or less. This longwall was 3,400m long and began producing in December of 1994 and was still cutting coal in May of 1997. There were five significant roof fall events on this panel, three of which required foam cement to fill the cavities. Of these three the interruption to production varied from four days to seven months. There were definite precursors to each of the weightings including: 1) an increase in audible noise (termed bumping) on the face, 2) supports went rapidly into yield, 3) roof convergence increased, 4) water percolated from the face roof strata, and 5) severe spalling of the coal occurred resulting in increased tip to face distance. Longwall face weightings are a result of geomechanical factors and cannot be avoided However, the loss of roof control is a different matter and highly subjective to operational procedures. The causes of weightings, their magnitude and impact on the mining at Phalen have been investigated. The following factors have been identified as relevant to these occurrences. 1. The influence of pillars in the overlying Harbour Seam workings. 2. Location of the LSU relative to the Phalen Seam. 3. Thickness of the LSU. 4. Pressure arch effect from the adjacent gobs. 5. Poor operational practices on the longwall including: a) slow rate of retreat; b) inadequate supply of pump pressure to the hydraulic supports; c) premature yielding of the yield valves; and d) poor face alignment practices. This paper will review the events that took place on the 7 East longwall and show that the Lower Sandstone Unit is the primary cause of the weightings. However, other factors contributed to the loss of roof control and the formation of the roof cavities.

Thoron daughter WL&apos;s measured by alpha-spectroscopy and the Kusnetz method are about one-half those of radon daughter WL&apos;s in a uranium mine in Canada.1 A diffusion model can account for the relative concentrations.l Since the Kusnetz technique is most widely used for measuring radon daughter WL&apos;s in uranium mines, a general procedure is derived to extend this method to measurement of WL&apos;s of radon and thoron daughters in air containing their mixtures. Coté P. and Townsend M.G., 1981. A procedure is also suggested for counting radon and thoron daughters by 3-channel [a]-spectroscopy. Errors in WL(Rn) are calculated for standard radon daughter counting procedures when a-decay of both thoron and radon daughters is attributed to radon daughters alone. Providing overall counting times are short, [<]30 min, these errors are generally small. The precision of ß -counting methods is also investigated. A portable 3-channel alpha spectrometer for measurement of radon and thoron daughters in uranium mines or homes is described, Carson D.W., 1979. The computer programs for analyzing the data to give, depending on the mode employed, some or all of the concentrations RaA, RaB, RaC, ThB, ThC and WL of radon and thoron daughters by alpha spectrometric, modified Kusnetz, Rolle and Tsivolglov methods are presented.(l) A commercial apparatus, based on the above prototype, incorporating a microprocessor and built under contract to EMR is now available.(2) A number of personal radiation dosimeters for miners are now being tested in mines. One of these is the CEA dosimeter which uses the track-etch film method, Duport P., Chapuis A.M. and Pradel J., 1979. An apparatus for rapid reading of track-etch films by the spark technique has been described previously, Cross W.G. and Thomasino L., 1970 and Huang V.F., 1975. We have developed such an apparatus for rapid semi-automatic reading of films exposed to radiation from mixtures of radon and thoron daughters in CEA dosimeters. The films used, Kodak LR 115 Type II Strippable, may be stripped rapidly and easily, for counting after irradiation and developing, by use of a special punch and suction technique. The method promises to provide an inexpensive and rapid technique for reading large quantities of personal dosimeter films. However, the present CEA dosimeter has faults in design, leading to a contamination problem. Those films that show contamination cannot be read by automatic means. A commercial apparatus based on the above prototype spark counter and built under contract to EMR is now available.3 1. These computer programs are available on request. 2. In the systems Mo-Fe-C, Mo-Co-C, and Mo-Ni-C the phase boumdaries of the cubic Ij carbides were determined at 1000°C and the variation of the lattice parameter with composition was measured. In the system Mo-Fe-C a single ternary carbide, Mo3Fe3C, was observed. In Mo-Co-C and Mo-Ni-C two new n phases of the type M12C were found: Mo6C06C and Mo6Ni6C. At 1000°C they coexist with the M6C phases MO3-4,CO3-2C and Mo3-4Ni3-2C, respectively. Mo3C03C and Mo4C02C are not separate phases but parts of a single M6C phase region, and the same is true of Mo3Ni3C and Mo4Ni2C. THE n carbide structure type has been known since it was determined by westgren&apos; in 1933, yet reliable information on phase compositions of this type is ap-parently scarce. The following selection of suggested formulas illustrates the extent of the confusion con-cerning compositions: W2-3Fe4-3C,1W6Fe6C,2 W2_4Fe4-2C,3 (W,Fe)6C,4 Tj.-W4Co2C and nz-W6Co6C,5 n1-W3Co3C and n2-w4Co2C,5 W3C03C and w6Co3C2,7 MO3Fe3C,8n2-M04Fe2C,9 (MO,Fe)6C,4 MO3CO3C,8 n2-MO4CO2C.9 Many of these compositions obviously overlap, some disagree in carbon content. The use of the designations 77, and n2 is not consistent. There is uncertainty whether two carbides M6C coexist or whether there is only one M6C with a wide range of substitution of one metal for the other. The existence of M12C seems questionable altogether if one ignores the results of a neutron diffraction study of W6Fe6C supporting that particular metal to carbon ratio.&apos;&apos; More reliable information is available for the iso-typic oxides studied by Nevitt,11 Nevitt, Downey, and orris," and Meussner and carpenter.l3 That n car-bides and oxides are structurally identical, particularly with respect to the location of the metalloid atom, has been demonstrated clearly by Stadelmaier and Meussner14 and also by Parthe, Jeitschko, and sadagopan.15 Therefore the present paper, which attempts to establish the phase boundaries of n defini-tively for three carbon systems, has implications for the whole family of filled Ti2Ni types. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The samples were prepared in two stages. Pellets weighing 3 g were compacted from powders of the elements and presintered in a closed tube of fused silica that had been evacuated to lO-4 mm Hg. This was fol- lowed by arc melting the sintered samples under argon. Remelting the button once was sufficient to produce homogeneous specimens. The metal powders had the following minimum purities in wt pct: molybdenum 99.5, iron 99.0, cobalt 99.7, nickel 99.9, graphite 99.94. Carbon determinations by the gas volumetric method were obtained from thirty-one of the one hundred samples in the annealed condition. They were limited to compositions that were critical to placing a boundary line in the isothermal sections. The carbon losses were comparatively low and averaged less than 1.5 at. pct. For annealing, the samples were sealed in tubes of fused silica evacuated to 10-4 mm Hg. The annealing schedule was 20 hr at 1250°C followed by 150 hr at 1000" ±10°C. For the water quench the silica glass tubes were broken mechanically to speed the quench. The specimens were examined in the as-cast and annealed condition by standard metallographic techniques. Some of the as-cast and all annealed samples were studied by X-ray diffraction using a 114.6-mm powder camera with filtered Co radiation. The lattice parameters of the n phases were determined by graphic extrapolation to 8 = 90 deg on a plot against sin2 8. It is estimated that the maximum error in the lattice parameters is ±0.002A.. The phase fields were determined by the disappearing phase method, relying on X-rays for phase identification and on microscopy to detect small amounts of a phase. RESULTS Pertinent information on the binary side diagrams has been summarized by Hansen and Anderko16 and Elliott17 and will not be discussed further. Photomicrographs documenting the equilibria at 1000°C have been selected to avoid redundancy due to the similarity of the three systems. Thus there will be only one picture showing an equilibrium with Mo2C, and so forth. Molybdenum-Iron-Carbon. An isothermal section of most of the Mo-Fe-C system at 1000°C is shown in Fig. 1. No attempt has been made to distinguish between a and y iron or to determine their phase boundaries. A conspicuous absence is the phase Fe2 1Mo2C6 with the Cr23C6 structure, supporting the suggestion by Krainer4 that it decomposes by annealing at high temperatures. The only ternary phase is found in a narrow range around Mo3Fe3C (MO43Fe43C14). A microstructure with a two-phase mixture of Mo + n is seen in Fig. 2. The variation of the lattice parameter of n with the estimated composition is shown in in Table IA. The phase diagram does not agree with the results of Kuo9 who reported n2-Mo4Fe2C. Our lattice parameter Varies from 11.095A at the iron-rich end to 11.140Å at the molybdenum-richoend of the phase field whereas Kuo9reported 11.26Å for Mo4Fe2C. "The Matte Separation plant at Inco's Copper Cliff Smelter Complex is described. The continuing implementation of flotation column technology in the flowsheet in various applications is reviewed. Comparative studies on 0.038, 0.10, 1.1 and 1.8 m diameter columns have been carried out. It was demonstrated that consistent metallurgical performance was obtained with both pilot- and plant-scale units. Grade-recovery relationships for plant columns can be predicted with confidence from data obtained from test equipment. The work indicates further areas of the flowsheet in which columns present an attractive alternative to conventional cells. INCO’s MATTE SEPARATION PROCESSNickel concentrate from Inco’s Sudbury area mills has been processed in the Copper Cliff smelter for sixty years. Prior to that, Sudbury ores had been smelted directly. Historically, copper-nickel separation from smelter converter matte was achieved by the classical Orford process. In the mid-1940s Inco developed an improved separation scheme based on mineral processing methods, the Matte Separation Process. A generalized Copper Cliff Smelter Complex flowsheet is shown in Figure 1.Iron sulfide and gangue contained in the nickel concentrate are rejected in the smelting-converting process. The molten product, typically containing 50% Ni, 25% CU and 22% s, is cast at about 1000 ºC, into floor moulds and allowed to slowly cool for four days. During this period nickel sulfide (heazlewoodite, Ni,S,), copper sulfide (chalcocite, cu,S) and a copper-nickel metallic alloy precipitate and form a coarse grain structure that is amenable to separation by physical means. The phase chemistry of this system has been described previously by Sproule et al (1). This matte then becomes the feed to the Matte Separation Process.A simplified block flowsheet of the Matte Separation Process is shown in Figure 2. Matte ingots, typically weighing 20 tonnes each, are broken and crushed in a three stage crushing plant to approximately minus 0.01 m and conveyed to the Matte Separation building. Grinding is carried out in two parallel circuits each consisting of a rod and ball mill in series producing a flotation feed which is 65% minus 44 microns. Typical throughput of each grinding circuit is 650 tonnes/day. The metallic fraction of the feed is recovered by magnetic separation. This product, containing about 66% Ni and 15% CU, is a major component of the feed to the Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery."

The molybdenite deposits at Climax, Colo., have recently attracted considerable notice, because of their great size, as compared with other known deposits of the same mineral. Climax station, on the Colorado Southern narrow-gage railway, was at one time the Fremont Pass station on the Denver & Rio Grande. It is 141/2 miles northeast of Leadville, and exactly on the divide between the headwaters of the Arkansas and Blue Rivers. Climax station is 11,300 ft. (3444 m.) above sea level. The working tunnel of the molybdenum mine is about 1 mile from the railroad, and 900 ft. above it, at an elevation of 12,200 feet. The climatic conditions are severe, and snow can be expected during any month of the year. Winter sets in not later than Nov. 1, the snowfall is very heavy, and the ground remains covered with snow until June 1, and sometimes even later. From June 1 to Oct. 1, there is much rain and a little snow falls in the late afternoon nearly every day. In October, 1917, there was one of the biggest snowstorms and blizzards of the year. Being just on the divide, constant strong winds blow the fine, dry snow with such force that, during most of the winter, outside work of any kind is accomplished under most trying conditions. Within a few miles of Climax, some of the richest gold placers of Colorado occur. One of them, McNulty Gulch, was just across on the northeastern flank of Bartlett mountain. This mountain, therefore, was well prospected, and the presence of a bluish mineral and a yellowish one resembling sulfur was known to the old prospectors. They thought for many years that the blue mineral was graphite, and it is difficult to say when it first became definitely known that it was molybdenite. Claims had been staked as early as 1896, but it is evident that the prospectors at that time were looking for gold. In 1902, several claims were acquired by H. Leal, who drove a tunnel about 900 ft. (274 m.) long, probably to intersect a fault, which shows on the surface, and was thought to be a possible gold carrier. Gold was not found in paying quantities, but throughout its length the tunnel passed through a fractured silicified granite, showing a fairly uniform distribution of a fine-grained bluish mineral, which was finally determined as molybdenite. INTRODUCTION The Luanshya Mine is situated in the southern part of the Zambian Copperbelt. The copper ore deposit is stratiform, and is preserved in a synclinorium known as the Roan/ Muliashi basin. Roan shaft (formally called No.14 shaft) is located at the eastern end of the syncline and is theoldest of the presently operating hoisting shafts, being sunk during the 1930&apos;s. It presently hoists some 45 per- cent of the total Luanshya Mine production. A cross-section through the shaft is shown in figure 1. The ore formation on the south limb is unmined on this section because until recently it was believed that such mining might cause damage to the shaft. This paper examines the influences of adjacent mining on this so-called &apos;shaft pillar&apos;, and describes the mechanics of subsidence of the pillar itself. GEOLOGY AND STRUCTURE Figure 1 shows the general form of folding in the vicinity of Roan shaft. The north and south limbs of the main syncline approach parallelism, with the bottom of the trough fairly smoothly rounded. The axis of the - trough plunges to the west-north-west at 6° - l0°. A brief summary of the major lithologies present in the Roan basin is given in table 1, however, the performance of the overall structure during progressive mining of the ore horizon is controlled by the following features in addition to the mining method. Intraformational Contacts These are characteristically weak in most geological environments. The BC/RL7 contact is an unconformity between moderately weak quartz-biotite schists below (unconfined compressive strength 40 - 80 MN/M 2), and strong quartzites above (U .C .S. 170-200 MN/M2) Subsequent formations are conformable, and planes of weakness are generally the result of contrasting lithology (see below). Weak Interbeds The Rt7, RL6, RL5, RL3 and RU2 horizons consist predominantly of quartzitic rocks, i.e. conglomerates, quartzites and argillites, and as such are generally strong and considered suitable for the positioning of development. Between these however, lie two much weaker dolomitic horizons, the RL4 and RU1. The Rt4 is the main hangingwall aquifer, and must be drained prior to mining. Drainage results in an extremely weak, blocky cavernous horizon which usually requires support if exposed by development. Similarly, the RU1 formation is comprised mainly of dolomites and dolomitic arqillites which are weak and cavernous. In the eastern part of the Roan/

Introduction The Pinto Valley open-pit copper mine is located in southern Arizona, 11 km (7 miles) west of Miami. Production at Pinto Valley began in 1974. About 350 Mt (386 million st) of ore and waste was removed by the end of June 1982. At that time, the mine was using more than 90 major equipment items with a total mobile fleet numbering 320. Some of the major equipment consisted of four Marion M4 rotary drills; six P&H 15, 11.5- and 19.1-m3 (15- and 25-cu yd) shovels; and 24,136- and 154-t (150¬and 170-st) Wabco haulage trucks. This equipment was used to move more than 139 kt/d (154,000 stpd) of ore and waste. The mill was processing more than 50 kt/d (55,000 stpd) of mine ore. Shutdown A two-week vacation shutdown began in July 1982. Maintenance jobs were scheduled, and most employees left for the vacation. During the vacation period, copper prices fell below $1.32/kg ($0.60 per lb). Inventories remained at alarmingly high levels. At this point the mine was losing more money operating than it would by being shut down. The vacation shutdown was first extended to five weeks. But, after further evaluation, the mine was shut down indefinitely. In Dec. 1982, Cities Services Co., owner of Miami Operations (which included the Pinto Valley mine and mill), was acquired by the Occidental Petroleum Corp. On March 1, 1983, Occidental sold the operations to Newmont Mining Corp., and Newmont created Pinto Valley Copper Corp., as a wholly owned subsidiary. Copper continued to be produced by the Pinto Valley solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX- EW) plant because of its low cost per pound of production. To ensure proper equipment care during the shutdown, maintenance management was given three goals; • maintain the SX-EW plant; • maintain the environmental and pollution control systems such as domestic water pumps and mine dewatering; and

With the extensive exploitation and gradual depletion of high-grade copper reserves, the mining industry is paying more and more attention to the hydrometallurgical extraction of copper from lowgrade and arsenic bearing copper ores. Hydrometallurgical processing, such as heap leaching, column leaching and bioleaching, provide a viable alternative to the traditional pyrometallurgy due to its harmony with the environment, moderate capital investment, and low operating costs. However, the slow leaching kinetics of enargite (Cu3AsS4) and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) remain problematic for commercial leaching practice. The formation mechanism and the nature of the passivating layers during leaching is still a matter of debate in hydrometallurgical research. In this study, the dissolution mechanism of enargite and chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solution was investigated using a range of electrochemical and spectroscopic analysis methods. Electrochemical oxidation of enargite demonstrated an obvious passivation region from 500 to 750 mV (Ag/AgCl). The formed passivation film was found a n-type semiconductor behaviour, which is different from the original enargite with a p-type behaviour. The results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) suggested that a nonstoichiometric film Cu(3−x)As(1−y)S4 (x>>y) accumulated on the electrode surface, which accounted for the obvious decrease in current density in the passive potential region. For chalcopyrite, three important potentials of 550, 680 and 730 mV which are related to the formation and dissolution of passivation film were observed based on the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and potentiodynamic polarisation. Raman and X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra studies of the chalcopyrite electrodes after being treated under these three potentials indicated a metal-deficient sulfide of Cu1−xFe1−yS2 (y>>x) might be responsible for the passivation phenomenon. Hence, it is concluded that the passivation of enargite and chalcopyrite are similar which are caused by metaldeficient sulfide surfaces although the compositions of the metal-deficient sulfide are different.

"In this work, the kinetics of ferric-ferrous redox reaction on a passivated sphalerite electrode is studied by the application of chronoamperometry method in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution. The electrochemical behaviour of ferric and ferrous couple was investigated on two sphalerite minerals acquired from two different geological regions (Iran and Canada). The carbon paste electrode (CPE) of sphalerite was initially prepared and passivated in 0.5 mol L-1 H2SO4 solution and after reaching the steady-state condition, ferric and ferrous sulfate solution was added. The registered current density differences between the current density of the passivated electrode and that of the electrode in the iron salts added solution were interpreted for kinetics of ferric-ferrous reduction-oxidation reaction. The equilibrium potential for ferric-ferrous couple on sphalerites surface was about 500 mV vs. Ag/AgCl. The exchange current density (i0) for ferric-ferrous redox reactions on the sphalerite samples had the same magnitude of 10–6 A cm–2. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements at 550 mV vs. Ag/AgCl illustrated that sphalerite oxidation was controlled by two charge transfer process in both of Fe-free and Fe-containing solutions. Four different types of fire suppression systems were evaluated in large-scale fire experiments to study the effect of air velocity on their effectiveness in extinguishing conveyor belt fires. The four different types of suppression system were water sprinkler, deluge-type water spray and two different dry chemical fire suppression systems. The large-scale fire tests were conducted with 1.8-m- (72-in.)-wide fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration flame resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G Flame Test). Each fire suppression system was tested at air velocities of 152 - 168 m (500–550 ft) per minute (mpm) and 411 - 457 mpm (1,350 - 1,500 fpm). Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each fire suppression system. Both of the water-based fire suppression systems were able to suppress the fire to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire extinguisher. However, the amount of water needed to suppress the fire to the point where a miner could walk up to and extinguish any smoldering belting was greater than the current MSHA regulations required. MSHA regulations only require 10 minutes of water supply for a suppression system. In the test setup, neither of these systems would have suppressed the fire had the water been turned off to the system after 10 minutes. The dry chemical suppression systems produced mixed results. Dry chemical suppression system A did not suppress the conveyor belt fire at either air velocity. Dry chemical system B suppressed the fire at 152 mpm (500 fpm) air velocity, but produced mixed results at the higher air velocity. Details are presented on the large-scale fire test setup, arrangement of the fire suppression systems and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity on fire suppression system design and performance.

The role of microorganisms in the leaching of metal sulfides is well established (Torma, 1977; Murr, 1980). However, this established knowledge applies mostly to chemolithotropic microorganisms such as Thiobacillus ferrooxidans which function optimally in leaching catalysis between 25-35° C, and in a pH range of 2-2.5. Although leaching with thermophilic microorganisms capable of extending the range of catalytic viability beyond 35° C is also documented, there are few if any attempts to optimize or extend sulfide concentrate leaching with thermophilic microorganisms. When mixed metal sulfides or other materials having different rest potentials (referenced to the standard hydrogen electrode, SHE, in the electromotive series) make contact in a conducting, aqueous medium, the contacting members will act as an electrochemical cell, with the member having the higher rest potential assuming the role of an electrical cathode. In leaching reactions involving such galvanic couples, the cathode becomes passivated, while the anodic member reacts vigorously due to the electro- chemical reaction which occurs (Hiskey and Wads- worth, 1975). Serry, eta1 (1978) observed that when chalcopyrite and pyrite were in intimate contact in natural ores, the chalcopyrite reacted vigorously by galvanic conversion as a result of the higher rest potential (~ 0.63 V) as compared to the chalcopyrite (~ 0.53 V). In addition, it was postulated that because of the elemental sulfur which can form on the anodic chalcopyrite in this galvanic conversion process, reactions in acid-bacterial medium would be expected to have accelerated copper extraction because of the conversion of any sulfur product layer on the chalcopyrite anode to sulfuric acid according to the following general reactions: [MS?M2+ + S° + 2e- (1) and 2S° + 302 + 2H20 bacteria?-2H2SO 4 (2)] where M in reaction (1) designates the metal (or metals in the specific case of chalcopyrite) to be released to solution by galvanic conversion.

"The Ansil deposit is located in the Noranda mining camp in the southern part of the Abitibi greenstone belt. /twas discovered in 1981 and production began in 1989 with proven reserves of 1.58 Mt grading 7.2% copper, 0.9% zinc, 26.5 glt of silver and 1.6 glt of gold. It is centered at a depth of 1.3 kilometre and represents one of the deepest ore discoveries ever made from surface.The deposit consists of a single massive sulphide lens located at the contact between the Northwest Rhyolite and the Rusty Ridge Andesite. The lens strikes north-south and dips 50° east. The thickness of the lens may reach up to 35 m and can change very abruptly both along strike and along dip. The maximum thicknesses of the sulphide lens are reached in its upper (western) and at its lower (eastern) edges, thus giving the deposit its present shape of two sulphide domes connected by a thinner central portion. The lower dome is underlain by a thick accumulation of massive magnetite which may reach 10 to 15m in thickness. The upper and lower domes are underlain by two distinct pipe-shaped zones of stringer and disseminated sulphides which merge with a larger stringer zone at depth.The Ansi/ deposit displays strong relationships between its morphology and the distribution of metals. Hydrothermal alteration consists of chloritization and sericitization. Chlorite alteration is closely associated with stringer sulphide mineralization while sericite is developed in diffuse zones bordering the chloritic zones. Unlike other similar deposits, the Ansil deposit is characterized by very extensive alteration and sulphide mineralization in the hangingwall of the massive sulphides. Several features of the deposit are consistent with an origin from a submarine hydrothermal system which was particularly long-lived, and which thus promoted the build-up of very high fluid temperatures with extensive replacement (and enrichment) of pre-existing sulphides after their original deposition onto the seafloor."

"The Copper Canyon property is located in the Galore Creek area of northwestern British Columbia. Porphyry copper-gold mineralization on the property is notable for its high gold content and close spatial relationship with a distinctive suite of high level syenitic and monzonitic intrusions, and pseudoleucite-bearing volcanic country rocks. The style of alteration and mineralization is similar in many respects to the nearby Galore Creek deposits.The current geological resource of 32.4 million tonnes grading 0.75% Cu, 1.17 g/ t Au and 17.1 g/t Ag is insufficient to support a mining operation, but definition of additional reserves combined with improved transportation infrastructure in the region may change this in the future. The climate, topography and proximity to an active glacier indicate that the most likely production scenario is an underground bulk mining operation, with the ore being milled offsite.IntroductionThe property is located at 57°07' North latitude, 131 °21' West longitude, on NTS sheet 104G/ 3W, approximately 160 km northwest of Stewart and 90 km south of Telegraph Creek (Fig. 1). The Galore Creek camp and airstrip are located 6 km to the west. Current access to the property is via helicopter either from Galore Creek, or from the Bronson Creek airstrip 32 km to the south-southeast.The deposit occurs within the Boundary Ranges of the Coast Mountains, on the north side of the east fork of Galore Creek, which flows northerly into the Scud River and thence westerly to the Stikine River.Topography is rugged. In the deposit area, elevations range from 1130 m to 1750 m. Valley glaciers and permanent snow and ice fields are characteristic of the region at these elevations, and at its southern limit, mineralization is truncated by the East Fork Glacier.The property is entirely above the treeline, and except for areas of moraine cover and talus slopes, outcrop is abundant."

The vast majority of the roughly 100 million rock anchors installed in mines in the USA each year use resin cartridges1. About 4.5 million of these bolts are installed using a mechanical shell in addition to the resin to create an active (pre-tensioned) bolt. Over 1 million of the bolts are passive cable bolts and typically have an effective grout length of 1.2 m, regardless of the cable length, which could be as long as 6 m. The successful performance of the resin grouted bolts depends on several parameters, including the annular gap between the bolt and hole wall, which should be relatively small, ideally from 3 mm to 5 mm. This requirement, combined with the high viscosity of the resin, produces a high back-pressure that can cause the bolt being installed to buckle or not be installed to standard. It is this back-pressure that limits the effective grout length with passive cable bolts and causes the mechanically anchored bolt failures (typically called ?spinners? where the mechanical shell does not anchor). This creates potentially unsafe conditions and wastes time and money. A purpose, built rig was used to mimic underground installations and record the back-pressures during full scale applications in the laboratory. This information was used, and is still being used, to reduce the failures and sub-standard installations by producing improved designs. In addition, a flow model was calibrated that can act qualitatively to estimate the back-pressures and can be used as a crude screening process before full scale prototypes are built and tested. To date, the results obtained have been used to stop the use of a mechanical shell due to the proven higher rate of failures. A new, improved mechanical shell is being field tested and another system is underdevelopment. The use of the rig is therefore ongoing to develop improved mechanical anchor systems. It is too early for real data; however, anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that significant improvements can and will be made.

We present the results of our field research on the variation of the density of the gassed explosives and their influence on the blasting results in the Peruvian mines: Yanacocha, Toquepala and Antamina. Currently, 90% of Peruvian mines uses gassed explosives, for their economic and technical benefits. But new practices and design criteria have had to be adopted, and the most important a careful control of the in-hole density, whose variation in the depth of the hole strongly affects the detonation process. For gassed explosives the density varies gradually according to the depth in the hole, due to the pressure on the bubbles by its own weight. The density at the bottom of the hole can reach critical values, which directly affects the start of the detonation in the booster zone with a high probability of nitrous fumes formation. On the other hand, density translates into the amount of explosive and energy available. Therefore, for the optimum performance of the explosive, the minimum and maximum values of the in-hole density must be determined. For the cases studied, the maximum in-hole density and the maximum charge length have been determined. When the charge length is greater than 7.0 m [ 23 ft.] special care must be taken with the cup density, which as a general rule should not exceed the value of 1.15 g/cm3 [71.8 lb/ft3] at the risk of losing the sensitivity at the bottom, also increasing the probability of nitrous fumes, bad fragmentation and finding intact explosive after blasting. In the large holes in Toquepala and Antamina mines, where the charge length can be greater than 9.0 m [29.53 ft]. If the cup density is greater than 1.15 g/cm3 [71.8 lb/ft3] the in-hole density can easily reach a high value of 1.30 g/cm3 [81.16 lb/ft3].

A static equilibrium mathematical model of the lead,flotation circuit at The Zinc Corporation Limited is developed to permit the feasibility of applying computer control techniques to be studied. The model is based on the relationship between the cumulative recovery of a mineral species R from n flotation cells or assemblies in a unit given asR = M(1-(1 - p)?)where M is the maximum possible: recovery and p is the probability of flotation for the particular mineral.The verification of this relationship by data from pilot plant cell-to-cell and plant open flow flotation units shows that these systems behave as if the probability p is constant for each cell or assembly of anyone unit. It is also concluded from this study that mineral recovery is independent of the head assay. Two consequences of this probability relationship, are demonstrated.1. The total recovery from an open flow unit is enhanced by increasing the number of flotation assemblies but maintaining a constant flotation time and total air addition.2. The rougher and scavenger capacity required to recover a bulk lead-zinc concentrate is approximately half that used for selective flotation.The static equilibrium model is derived by solving a series, of mass balance equations which incorporate the recovery-probability relationship for each type of flotation unit. It is used to calculate the complete metallurgy of the circuit for any arrangement of cells knowing only the plant feed assays and the probabilities of flotation for the three mineral types, galena, marmatite, and gangue for rougher, scavenger, and cleaner flotation. The high degree of prediction obtained is demonstrated by comparison with plant results.Pulp flowrate is the principal variable affecting the accuracy of the present model. Work is in progress to establish this effect and permit the derivation of a dynamic model. Even so, the static model is valuable in its present form for the analysis and design of circuits, and optimisation studies using computer services have been conducted.

I FEAR that my treatment of this subject may not, in all instances, meet the approval of those who read my opinion as to the utility and efficiency of pyrometers in the making of glass, or bottle-glass. It may be superfluous for me to add that this opening statement is based on over 15 years&apos; experience in an endeavor to successfully apply pyrometers, or heat-measuring instruments, to glass-melting furnaces, particularly the type known as tank-furnaces, and that such endeavors have proved more or less futile. It is my desire, therefore, to herein set forth the problems encountered, hoping thereby to stimulate further effort in the successful application of pyrometers. It is my desire, also, to invite criticism of the methods used and suggestions from those who may have a wider experience, or who may have better methods. Fin. 1.-GLASS TANK FURNACE. In general, I believe that the inefficient application of pyrometry to the melting of glass in tank furnaces is not due as much to the instruments as to the conditions under which they must be used and the character of the medium in which they must reside. Most of those present no doubt, are familiar, at least in a general way, with the methods and apparatus used in the melting and making of bottle-glass, or glass that is formed into containers of various shapes and designs. Most of this glass is made in what is known as a tank furnace, these furnaces vary widely in design and construction. In general, they consist of a rectangular tank-like form, built up of fireclay blocks, and range from 2 by 4 ft. (0.6 by 1.2 m.) to 24 by 140 ft.
