Research personnel at the U.S. Bureau of Mines have conducted longwall gate stability studies at four western U.S. mines attempting to employ yield pillars for improved ground conditions. Located in the Book Cliffs and Wasatch Plateau coalfields of north-central Utah, these operations are generally characterized by multiple-seam mining, cover depths averaging 450 - 600 m (1,500 - 2,000 fl), occasionally extending beyond 760 m (2,500 ft), abrupt cover depth variation due to the overlying canyon/mesa topography, and massive, rigid sandstone roof units. Such conditions encourage severe gate and panel coal bumping, as well as various types of roof instabilities and occasional floor-heave problems. To alleviate these adverse conditions, several mines have employed yield pillars to-reduce hazard-inducing excessive gateroad stress concentrations. This paper describes the evolution of gateroad designs at four of these operations, the specific mining conditions involved, and the general stability performance attained by using yielding gate systems. Mine experiences are "compared" in terms of basic setting conditions, and the general concepts of yielding system applicability and success potential are summarized.

Fording Coal Limited's mine in the Rocky Mountains near Elkford, B.C. has produced 21.8 million clean tonnes of metallurgical coal from 1971 to 1980, inclusive. This production has come from several pit areas and required the removal of 149.1 million bank cubic meters of waste rock and overburden by truck-shovel and dragline operations. Waste dumps from 30m to 200m in height have been successfully constructed on natural slopes, generally between 10° and 26°. Design considerations for the dumps include foundation and soil conditions, natural slope angles and containment of weak overburden or rehandle materials. Dump control is maintained by monitoring the crest and the face of an active dump area. Crest movement is measured by extensometers locally termed "Spoil Monitors". When crest movement rates progressively increase above normal, dumping operations are temporarily relocated. Some unstable conditions and mass failures have occurred as the result of natural foundation slopes being in excess of 26°, failure of weak water saturated foundation soils or weak material being placed on the dump.

This paper describes a wind tunnel modelling study on airflow and pollutant concentration in a large open pit mine located in southern China. A 1:1000 scale model of the surface mine was fabricated and placed in a wind tunnel. Airflow velocity in the test section of the wind tunnel can be continuously adjusted from 0.3 m/s to 6.0 m/s. In this study, both the present pit condition and the projected final pit condition were modelled. Airflow direction and velocity profiles were obtained. The impact of wind direction and velocity on airflow was also studied. The pollutant concentration distribution in the open pit was simulated using smoke, and a distribution profile was obtained. Respirable dust concentrations at the mine site were measured, then its concentrations at the projected final pit condition were estimated using the obtained pollutant concentration distribution profile. Under normal meteorological conditions, it is expected that the respirable dust concentration for the final pit should not exceed the government standard. At Barrick's Zaldivar Copper Mine in Chile, the addition of sulfuric acid to the ore going to heap leaching is a major expense. A process in which a portion of this acid is replaced by elemental sulfur added to the heap has been developed by Barrick and Westcoast Biotech that has the potential for significant cost savings. Initial shake flask tests with plant raffinate solution indicated that oxidation of elemental sulfur by a culture of sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, some indigenous to the Zaldivar heap, showed a significant lag period. This lag period could be reduced by dilution of the raffinate, but dilution would not be economical to implement at Zaldivar. Short (0.75 m) column tests indicated that after the initial lag period, sulfur biooxidation occurred steadily and the acid requirement for obtaining the same copper recovery as the control without sulfur was reduced by as much as 13 kg/t. These tests were followed by taller (5.1 m) column tests that confirmed the reduction in acid consumption, with no negative effect on copper extraction.

The recovery of copper from a flotation concentrate using ferric chloride leaching has been investigated. The concentrate from the Horseshoe Lights Mine near Meekatharra, Western Australia, contained mainly digenite, pyrite and talc minerals. Over 95 per cent of the copper was dissolved in an acidified ferric chloride solution in one hour at 70¦C and ambient pressure. The pyrite and gangue minerals did not react. The leaching process was found to consist of four separate reactions and the shrinking core model was used to describe the process. The effects of particle size, temperature, concentration of FeCls, stirring speed and leaching time on metal dissolution were investigated. The apparent activation energies in the second, third and fourth reactions of leaching of copper concentrate were 28.8, 11.9 and 53.9 kJ/mol, respectively. The optimum conditions for the leaching of copper from the concentrate, within the range of conditions studied were: particle size 63 per cent minus 38 ¦m, a ferric chloride concentration of 1.48 M, a temperature of 70¦C, and a stirring speed of 800 rpm.

A shipboard research system capable of operating in waters of up to 2,000 m has been designed and implemented by the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory (HURL), University of Hawaii. It uses a remotely-operated ocean bottom survey camera system, ROV, bottom TV grab, the PISCES V submersible, and a submersible emergency recovery system aboard the 225-foot RN KA'IMIKAI-O- KANALOA. All systems are operated from the stern of the KA'IMIKAI with a mounted Caley telearm and articulated A-frame system. The system was designed for multi-purpose use of the telearm for launch and recovery of the PISCES V submersible on a lift recovery line (with or without diver assistance), or night-time operations with an electro-optical cable using either the HURL ocean floor sidescan, or photo and video system operated at 10 m above the ocean floor. The 1.14-inch diameter cable is also used to operate the RCV-150 garage/ROV system. The garage/ROV system has also been designed to act as a submersible rescue system with a submersible lift capability.

Since the development of the pelletizing process in the fifties for relatively high purity pellets from low grade taconites, there have been several distinctive changes in filter construction for the dewatering step preceding balling. In the original large pilot plant run by Reserve Mining Co. in Babbitt, MN, the disk type filter employing agitation (Agidisc filter) was selected as the most economical. Size was limited to 2.1 m (6 ft, 9 in.) in diameter. The second generation occurred in the sixties with a jump to 2.70 m (8 ft, 10 in.) in diameter to reduce capital costs per annual ton of pellet. In the early seventies, the third generation was the steam drying disk filter which became necessary to achieve balling moistures with specific surface areas of 2200 cm2/g to as high as 3800 cm2/g caused by finer grinding to obtain higher purities. Finally, the fourth generation has recently been developed to reduce maintenance costs and further improve hydraulics to ensure minimum moisture contents.

King Island is situated at the western approach of Bass Strait and approximately mid way between Victoria and Tasmania. The scheelite orebodies lie within the south east of the island. Ore bearing horizons from 10 m to 40 m thick occur in south and east dipping stratiform deposits. The orebodies occur in skarn formed by contact metasomatic replacement of carbonate rocks by granite intrusives. The scheelite is deposited as fine disseminated grains in and along the margins of andradite garnets in the skarn. King Island Scheelite operates two under- ground mines from which 350 000 tonnes per year are obtained. The Dolphin mine produces almost two-thirds of the total. See Figure 1. The Dolphin orebody lies beneath the sea and an area of reclamation. The orebody is inter- sected by zones of major dislocation. A chequerboard post pillar cut and fill stoping system has been chosen to provide the necessary support to the hanging wall. Because the stability of the pillars is critical to the economic welfare of the mine, considerable attention is given to the reduction of overbreak.

A sample of tailings from a local, low grade (less than 2g/t) tailings dump was investigated for gold recovery. The tailings were very fine, with 90 per cent passing 30¦m and almost 60 per cent passing 10¦m. Tabling the coarse product from classification using a cyclone proved unsuccessful, with low recoveries being obtained due to high gold losses in the slime streams. Gold recovery by cyanide leaching was quite rapid, with recoveries of 85-90% being obtained in five hours. Lime and cyanide consumptions were 3 g/t and 0.1 kg/t respectively. Gold loading onto carbon was inhbited by the presence of the large amount of fines, so heap and vat leaching should be considered where the gold is recovered from a clear pregnant solution. Settling tests were conducted on tailings. It was observed that the addition of at least 3 kg/t lime or 0.4 kgh nonionic flocculant was necessary to promote settling of the tailings to generate a clear supernatant for gold and water recovery.

We investigated about synthesis of Mn-Zn ferrite with spinel structure using sulfuric acid leaching solution of mixed spent zinc-carbon batteries and spent alkaline batteries. The waste batteries were prepared by physical treatment such as crushing, magnetic separation, and screening. After screening, the crushed batteries were separated to +8 mesh and -8 mesh powder. Among these, under 8 mesh powder was selected for leaching test. The leaching test was investigated at 2 M H2SO4, 4 vol.% H2O2, reaction temperature 60 ?, agitation speed 250 rpm, solid/liquid ratio 50 g/ 500 ml, reaction time 1 h. The leaching efficiency of zinc, manganese and iron were 99.0%, 98.9%, 58.5%, respectively. For co-precipitation of zinc, manganese and iron, 5M NaOH solution was used for pH control. Then in order to synthesize Mn-Zn ferrite powder, it was investigated according to reaction temperature, agitation speed and O2 partial pressure. We could synthesize about 20 nm of Mn-Zn ferrite with spinel structure.

Several cases could be cited of oxidized zones in copper and lead mines which reached depths of upward of 1500 ft. (457 m.) below the surface, and it is universally admitted that the oxidized zone in a mine is limited by the permanent water level. FIG. 1. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M., except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of - scientific and technical societies members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time 'in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render - valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish genera1 information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

Ph.D. (Cape Town) (Fellow) Evidence for the adsorption or re-precipitation of gold from cyanide solutions onto gangue minerals of the Witwatersrand reefs has been gathered over a number of years by various investigators. The evidence from tests using radioactive tracers is conclusive and indicates thlt adsorption contributes about 0,1 g/t to the total gold loss from conventional reduction works. The loss is a function of the alkalinity and cyanide concentration of the solution, and it appears to be affected by the extent of time between milling and cyanidation. The heavy minerals appear to be the strongest adsorbers, and the clay minerals somewhat less strong adsorbers. A sensitive qualitative test based on thin-layer chromatography permits the extent of adsorption and desorption to be readily determined.

Authorisation No.66 (to Prospect) was allocated to R.W. Miller & Co. Pty. Ltd. on 1st November, 1976. Exploration has brought coal reserves to measured status in the Jerry's Plains sub-group which are about 550m. thick. The immediately lower Vane Sub-group, about 200m. thick, includes about 20 seams. The total measured and indicated reserves of the two sub-groups based on the criteria adopted by the company amount to 1362 million tonnes in situ. This very large resource is subject to very many mining constraints both physical and economic which limit the saleable reserves under present conditions to about 120 million tonnes. The results of the calculation of reserves after exploration is complete in a deep multiple seam situation is dependent upon the criteria used to include or exclude seams in the reserves. These criteria are state- ments of the miner's expectations of the market, mining and coal preparation technology, local and national politics and the law as it may be applied in the future.

This paper and slide presentation is a brief rundown on what is probably the worst natural devastation I have ever witnessed. The epicenter of the quake that so violently shook Mexico City occurred 230 miles away near Mexico's west coast. The first calculation placed the quake at 7.8 on the Richter scale. This was later upgraded to 8.1. Each unit increase on the Richter scale indicates about a 30 fold increase in energy released. The quake was felt in much of Mexico and south Texas and damage occurred in many other Mexican cities. On the morning of September 19, 1985, at 7:18 A.M., the ground went into motion and shook for approximately 2 to 4 minutes. During this period most of the devastation occurred. At 7:38 P.M. the following day, the second quake hit and more buildings fell from this 7.5 quake. The ground in Mexico City moves like jello since it is a dry lake bed 7,350 feet above sea level.\

At the RETC 1979 in Atlanta/Georgia it was reported about the beginnings of the Hydroshield system and the first site experiences. Since that time over 10 miles of tunnels in various diameters have been built with that system, and the discussion of the two most interesting projects will be the main topics of this paper. AURELIA TUNNEL, ROME In Rome, the railway system is going to be completed and modernized. Therefore, it is necessary to tunnel through the Roman hills. Part of the new railway system is the Aurelia Tunnel, located some 100 feet below the famous Via Aurelia Antigua, close to the Vatican. The double track railway tunnel has an internal diameter of 9.44 m and a length of 2.410 m. It runs through completely differing soil conditions. (Fig. 1) The first 1000 t are situated in watertight clay, the rear part in water bearing loamy, clayey sands with interlayers of loamy clays. The figure shows the soft change-over from clay to sand. Aur Resources is Canada's leading copper mining company with producing mines and development projects in North, Central and South America. Copper production from Louvicourt Mine in Quebec, Quebrada Blanca and Andacollo Mines in Chile was a record 245 million pounds in 2001. Located 600 km North of Montreal, Louvicourt Mine is a joint venture between Aur Resources (30%), Novicourt Inc (45%) and Teck-Cominco (25%). Aur Resources is the mine operator with 280 employees working to produce a copper and zinc concentrate. In operation since 1994, the mine has produced a total of 12,606,000 metric tonnes of ore grading 3.6% Cu, 1.5% Zn, 26 gr./m.t. Ag and 0.9 gr./m.t. Au. This highly mechanized mine reached full production in August 1995 at 4,000 tpd. From 1996 to 2001, the average mine production rate was more than 4,300 tpd. The Louvicourt Mine continued its record of solid performance in 2002 and is expected to continue to do so for the balance of its 2.5 years mine life.

Standard erosion plots (4.6 m by 22.1 m on 9 percent slope) were constructed on the Alston Surface Mine of Peabody Coal Company in Western Kentucky to evaluate the effects of placement technique and density on the erodibility and eroded size distribution from mine spoil and reconstructed topsoil. PLots were constructed with a dozer and scraper pan from shale spoil material, topsoil (A horizon) and subsoil (B and C horizon mixture) using soils stockpiled at the Alston Surface Mine. Plots were evaluated under fallow conditions with a tilled plot surface and two compacted conditions. One compacted condition was generated by tracking the surface with a dozer and rolling with a loaded scraper pan. The second was generated by rolling the surface with a solid wheel compactor. Rainfall was supplied with the Kentucky Rainfall Simulator at a rate of 63.5 mm h-l with the plots in three different soil moisture conditions; dry, field capacity, and very wet. Runoff was evaluated for flow rates, sediment concentrations, and aggregate and primary particle size distributions. Sediment yields and the Universal Soil Loss Equation E130 indexes were calculated from the data for each plot. The erodibility was calculated from the tilled plot data using a weighted soil loss and E130 value from the dry, field capacity and wet runs, and a cover management factor calculated for every other condition. For the topsoil and subsoil plots, sediment yield was greatest for the dozer scraper pan plots and lowest for the tilled plots. For the shale plots, erosion rates from the wheeled compacter plots were the highest and tilled plots the lowest. Average erodibilities were 0.14, 0.38, and 0.41 tons ac h ft-1 tonf-1 in-1 hundred ac-1 for the shale, subsoil, and top-soil plots. Cover management factors for each plot were 1.29, 1.42, and 1.17 for shale, topsoil and subsoil plots compacted with the solid wheeled compacter and 1.29, 3.79, and 2.51 for shale, subsoil, and topsoil plots compacted with the dozer scraper pan conbination. The accuracy of the Wischmeier erodibility nomograph was evaluated on the data collected. Erodibilities were accurately predicted for the topsoil plot and poorly predicted for the sub-soil plot. The accuracy of the CREAMS procedures for predicting the composition (size distribution) of eroded particles was also evaluated. The composition was well predicted for the topsoil plots, moderately well predicted for the shale plots and poorly predicted for the subsoil plots.
