"This paper presents the challenges associated with the design and construction of a steel sheet pile cofferdam supported with one level of grouted anchors in clean to silty sand with gravel. The initial assessment of the subsurface conditions indicated loose to medium dense soil with intermittent dense to very dense layers with no occurrence of cobbles and boulders. Sheet piles were proposed to be installed to a depth of 24 m below the ground surface to limit dewatering requirements for the cofferdam. During sheet pile installation, refusal of piles occurred at multiple locations forming passages for increased flow into the cofferdam. Modifications were made in the design of the dewatering system as a result of the increased flow. Finite element modeling was used to select the necessary modifications to the dewatering system within the cofferdam. Wells were installed based on the findings of the numerical model. Model simulations showed good comparison with monitoring of the field installed dewatering system.INTRODUCTIONIt is necessary to consider the impact of the ground water, subsurface stratigraphy, strength, and drainage behavior of the soil for the design and construction of cofferdams. This paper presents a case history of the construction of a cofferdam in Northern Ontario, Canada. The project consists of the construction of a powerhouse, intake, and tailrace which will generate around 28 MW of renewable clean energy by diverting water from New Post Creek through a power house and discharge into the Abitibi River. The focus of this paper is the dewatering and excavation support required to permit construction of the powerhouse. The layout of the cofferdam is shown in Fig. 1. The cofferdam for the powerhouse is rectangular in shape with sheet piles on all four sides intended to be driven to the design toe El. 101 m. The east and west walls have a length of 46.3 m. North and south sides are 47.6 m long; and in addition, two cantilever sheet pile walls bound the tailrace on the west side and two cantilever walls were installed on the east for construction of the penstock inlet. The ground surface in the powerhouse cofferdam area, before commencement of sheet pile driving, was brought to El. 125; the ground then slopes up to the East, toward New Post Creek, and the site is bounded on the West by the Abitibi River. 186 pairs of sheet piles were used to create the cofferdam and cantilever walls. The deepest excavation is to elevation 114.4 m. Within the west half of the cofferdam footprint, the base of excavation slopes upward at 3H: 1V to facilitate the tailrace discharge into Abitibi River.SOIL STRATIGRAPHYThe cofferdam design was based on the geotechnical investigation conducted by AECOM (2014) which included two relevant boreholes near the powerhouse footprint. The ground elevation at the time of investigation varied between 131 to 129 m. The material observed to the full depth of investigation was comprised generally of coarse to fine sand and gravelly sand or a sand matrix with gravelly inclusions. Some intermittent layers of clay and silt intrusions were also observed. Generally the soils grade finer away from the river. SPT N60 values were recorded in two borings during the field investigation with values reported from 3 to 92. The in-situ conditions ranged from compact to dense with some loose and some very dense zones. Figure 2 shows the variation in SPT N60 values with elevation."

The mechanization of platinum group metal (PGM) underground reef mining in South Africa has posed a challenge to mining engineers for several decades. This is primarily due to the shallow dip angles and narrow thickness (<1.1m) of the tabular orebodies mined, and the issues faced in developing reliable drilling, bolting and loading machines suitable for such hard-rock mining applications. Presently, mining is typically conducted using hand drills and scraper shovels. These methods, however, are intensive in terms of manual labor, and limited in terms of productivity, and improved methods are desired. This paper will review the technical features of a 4 tonne, low-profile, LHD for narrow-reef PGM mining, developed by EJC Loaders Division.

The dissolution process of phosphate rock from the Semikan area (Mardin-Mazidagi, Turkey) using dilute phosphoric acid has been investigated. The work involved studying the effect of important variables, such as reaction time, stirring speed, particle size fraction, phosphoric acid concentration and temperature. Van der Sluis et al.?s model was used to determine the rate of the partial dissolution of phosphate ore. Mass-transfer coefficients (kL) varied between 2.8 and 28.5.10-3 m.s-1. The activation energy of the process varied between 16 and 20 kJ.mol-1. It has been found that the dissolution process is controlled by calcium ion diffusion, rather than by chemical reaction.

Electrical conductivities and densities of molten fluoride systems were measured as functions of the melt temperature and composition. For any given mixture, the two properties change linearly with temperature. Three alkali metal fluorides were selected as solvents for melts of the type LiF-, NaF-, and KF-MFx, where M is a metal selected from the alkali metal or alkaline earth groups, or from the lanthanide or actinide series of elements, and x = 1-4. Heats of activation for conductance were calculated from the experimental data and varied from 2.3 to 9.2 kcal/mole at 1,000° C. Some relation between position in the phase diagram and the conductivity changes was suggested.

1- Importance of Shafts for the Exploration and Extraction of Coal Deposits Coal mining in the Federal Republic of Germany is carried out in a depth between 800 and 1200 m below sea level (Fig. 1). The shortest connections underground in a mine and up to the surface are vertical shafts. Such shafts assume, with ventilation, manriding and the winding of material, the most important functions for the maintenance of mining operations. In the German coal mining industry, a difference is made between the main shafts providing a direct access from the surface to the deposits, and the so-called "blindshafts" which serve as a connection between two or several haulage levels underground. Dilute-phase pneumatic conveying has been used in the mining industry since the 1920s. It has primarily been used for the hoisting of coal and salt ores, and as a transportation medium for backfill material. More recently there have been investigations into a wider variety of applications, which this paper addreses. The paper will point out some deficiencies in the system. It 1s not the "champion" of the mining industry, but rather an excellent srste?1 with a variety of applications that may not have been studied m enough detail. The most imaginative applications to the Redpath Pneumatic Conveying System have been initiated by persons needing an innovative application to a specific predicament.

This paper reviews the annual status of the New Zealand mining industry (metallic minerals and coal) including key aspects such as mineral production, mineral exploration expenditure, commodity price trends, key industry players, market activity and other significant commercial factors. &nbsp; Strong commodity prices during 2006 have been underpinned by a number of key factors including US dollar weakness and emerging market demand, particularly from countries such as China and India. In real terms commodity prices have recovered significantly since 2002 and are currently at 20-year highs. &nbsp; New Zealand exploration spending on metallic minerals (predominantly gold) is at a 15 year high driven by rising global commodity prices. New Zealand gold production in 2006 was about 340,000 oz and is expected to grow in 2007 as new mines at Frasers and Globe-Progress (Oceania Gold) and Favona (Newmont) come on stream. Gold production broadly lags 10 years behind exploration spending and exploration activity over the last five years remains well below that seen in the early 1980Æs. Expenditure on coal exploration shows a similar trend with strong growth from a low base over the last five years, reaching over $11 M in 2006. Total coal production in 2006 was 5.9 Mt, an increase of 10% on 2005 with imports from Indonesia adding a further $1.1 Mt. &nbsp; Newmont and Oceana Gold are by far the largest public gold mining companies operating in New Zealand, although only Oceana Gold maintains a presence on the local stock exchange. Other metals explorers with New Zealand projects include a range of public-listed Juniors (market capitalisation less than NZ$50m) domiciled largely in New Zealand, Australia and/or Canada. Capital-raising on public markets directed towards New Zealand exploration is estimated at around NZ$12 M for 2006, the bulk of this coming via Glass EarthÆs NZ$10 M IPO on the NZAX in October. &nbsp; The New Zealand Coal sector is dominated by the state-owned enterprise Solid Energy with around 80% market share by production. Other domestic coal competition remains limited, and includes the L&amp;M Group, Pike River Coal, Eastern Corporation, and New Vale (acquired by Solid Energy in 2007). Pricing parity comes mainly from imported coal and global thermal coal prices have remained strong during 2006 at around US$45-55/t, driven by continued expansion in Chinese demand. Coking coal prices have eased 16% since 2005 to around US$98/t in 2007. &nbsp; Although recent increases in exploration spending suggest a renaissance in the New Zealand minerals sector, long-run trends indicate that we have simply rebounded from a low base over the last five years and much work is still to be done to stimulate further growth in the mining industry to maintain minerals production at current levels. Key industry challenges include marketing exploration opportunities to local and overseas investors, building a critical mass of NZX-listed explorers and providing an internationally competitive environment to attract further capital and expertise.

"In the spring of 2005 Schnabel Foundation Company completed a $15.2 million Design/Build subcontract to underpin 11 structures, and provide 202,800 square feet of earth retention for the Reno Transportation Rail Access Corridor (ReTRAC) project in Reno, Nevada. Schnabel’s work was part of a Design/Build contract to depress a railroad alignment through downtown Reno. The depressed section was 2.2 miles long, 54 ft wide, and up to 35 ft deep (3.5 km long, 16.5m wide and up to 10.7m deep). The trench structure was required to be watertight. SUBCONTRACT WORK OVERVIEWEleven buildings along the track alignment required underpinning. Three types of underpinning were used, designated Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3.At four buildings the trench retaining walls were to be located directly under the exterior footings. This alignment eliminated traditional underpinning and cut-off wall techniques that could normally be used to support structures. Type 1 underpinning was used at these buildings. This underpinning system consisted of a combination of permeation grouting, hand-dug piers, and permanent tiebacks. This underpinning system became the new watertight trench walls.Five buildings were located a few feet behind the trench walls, and their exterior walls were supported by continuous footings. Type 2 micropile/pile cap underpinning (patent pending) was used to support these buildings.The remaining two buildings were also located a few feet behind the trench walls, but they had column footings along the exterior walls. At these structures traditional micropile underpinning was provided through the existing footings. This is described as Type 3 underpinning.Temporary earth retention was required on both sides of the trench along most of the alignment. This shoring supported frontage roads, private property and surcharge from the temporary railroad shoofly running parallel to one side of the trench.SUBSURFACE CONDITIONSThe soil along the trench alignment consisted of river outwash deposits. The top 2 to 18 feet (0.6m to 5.5m) generally consisted of flood plain silt and sand deposits, or fine-grained fills. These fine-grained soils are underlain by the Tahoe Outwash Formation which consists of interbedded layers of sand; sand and gravel; and sand, gravel, cobbles and boulders. Some of these layers encountered during construction consisted of 30 to 50 percent cobbles and boulders, with some boulders up to eight feet in diameter.A major challenge to the design and construction of the trench structures and the underpinning was the ground water table which was 10 feet (3m) above subgrade in the deepest portions of the trench. Based on specification restrictions, temporary and permanent dewatering was not feasible. As a result, the selected design and construction methods had to consider three water conditions: the anticipated groundwater level during construction (CGW), the groundwater level for permanent design (DGW), and an additional special design condition with water at street grade."

The second-order, nonlinear, partial- dillerential equation representing the transient radial flow of gas - condensate fluids in reservoirs has been integmted by using finite -dillerence equations and electronic computers. Effect was given to pressure -dependent permeability, viscosity, and compressibility and to distance-dependent permeability. The influence of a second-degree velocity term in the Darcy equation was investigated. Implicit methods were used and practical, convergent solutions were obtained with material balance to less than 6 x 10-4 for recovery of one- hall the reserve at constant flow rate. Integration results provide the productive period of a reservoir for a given constant rate and the fraction of the fluid initially in place that can be recovered in that period. The properties of a lean and a rich fluid are represented in a set of integrations designed to demonstrate the effect of different constant-recovery rates and significant variables emphasized one at a time. INTRODUCTION A method is needed for computing the availability or reserve of a gas in a formation, making use of all technical and engineering information that is pertinent. As a step in this direction, a program for computing transient linear flow1 was developed that utilizes principles of earlier finite-difference computing for a similar purpose2-4 and gives effect to significant pressure- and distance-dependent properties of reservoirs and their contents. The present paper pertains to transient, radial flow of gas-condensate fluids. In the partial-differential equation of flow, effect is given to the variables viscosity and compressibility,5 and also to permeability. Included in the study is the quadratic form of the Darcy equation of flow that has been the subject of field tests6 and that has been applied to a gas with constant properties in transient flow computing. 7 Inclusion in the differential equation of variable coefficients to represent properties greatly complicates the higher derivatives of the equation. Because it was impractical to make a required improvement in certain of the finite-difference derivatives by Taylor-series expansion, five-term derivatives were used in the implicit computing. Related methods were developed that can improve general facility in manipulating finite-difference equations. O presente trabalho avalia o efeito da indução máxima sobre a energia dissipada por histerese magnética em amostras de aços elétricos de grão não orientado. Tal relação foi descrita por Steinmetz como uma lei de potência cujo expoente tem valor 1,6. No entanto, esta lei falha quando aplicada a uma ampla faixa de induções magnéticas. Com o objetivo de se avaliar a aplicabilidade dessa equação chapas de aço elétrico foram caracterizadas. Ciclos de histerese foram extraídos com indução máxima variando entre 0,4 e 2,2 T com frequência 5 mHz. A área no interior dos ciclos corresponde à energia dissipada. Estes resultados mostraram uma diminuição do valor do expoente para induções entre 1,2 e 1,6 T. Este fato pode ser explicado pela estagnação do valor do campo coercivo nessa faixa de dados.

In this paper, the pretreatment of concentrates by roller press was present to improve the granulation of blends comprising some 30 per cent iron ore concentrates and enhance the sintering performance. It is shown that by pretreatment of fine concentrates through roller press, the content of +3 mm fractions of granulation mixture and sinter mixture permeability are elevated by ten per cent and 35 per cent. In the meantime, a sinter productivity increase from 1.51 - 1.62 t.m-2.h-1 is attainted in pot tests with similar sinter tumble index and at lower coke rate. The mechanism of the pretreatment of concentrates process to improve sintering performance of fine iron ore concentrates was demonstrated by mineralogy that better permeability help form more calcium ferrite and good microstructure of sinter, further proven by the better metallurgical performance of sinter.

A 4.8 m (16 ft) diameter hard rock tunnel was driven through granite bedrock to create the 1.7 kilometer (1.1 mile) long Hampton McCloy Retention Tunnel for the city of Richmond, Virginia. During the work the tunnel encountered narrow seams of partially decomposed granite that were not self supporting and could be dealt with using ribs and lagging. However, as the tunnel approached the receiving shaft, it encountered a large seam of highly decomposed rock, alluvial deposits and running sand which resulted in soil loss into the machine. As a result of this condition, a jet grouting program was quickly developed to allow the tunneling to continue. This paper will describe the manner in which jet grouting was used to solidify and stabilize the decomposed bedrock, alluvial soils, and running sand to allow the TBM to continue tunneling.

The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP) is a 10.4 km (6.5 mi) long, 14.4 m (47.5 ft)bored tunnel that will run under the City of Niagara Falls from the Upper Niagara River to the Sir Adam Beck Power Station. The completed project will enhance the capacity of the Sir Adam Beck Power Station by adding 500 m3 (17,657 ft3) of water per second through the tunnel. The paper describes the project in which the world’s largest hard rock TBM at14.4 m (47.5 ft) in diameter is being used to excavate the tunnel. Features of the project include the use of a High Performance (HP) Main Beam TBM, state-of-the-art ground support and tunnel logistics systems. A continuous conveyor is used for muck transport from the TBM to the disposal area. The paper will also discuss the optimization of the TBM system as the tunnel advances through the varying geology. In June 2004 the Ontario Government announced that Ontario Power Generation(OPG) had been given approval to proceed with the third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls—the first two tunnels were constructed in the 1950s using drill and blast techniques. The third tunnel, appropriately named The Niagara Tunnel Project (NTP), consists of a 10.4 km (6.5 mi) long TBM-bored, concrete-lined tunnel with a finished diameter of 12.5 m (41.1 ft). In August 2005, OPG announced the selection of Strabag AG of Austria, one of the largest construction companies in Europe, as the contractor to build the NTP Project at a price of CAN $600 million. In September 2005, Strabag A.G. selected The Robbins Company of Solon, Ohio to design, manufacture and deliver a new 14.4 m (47.5 ft) diameter High Performance state-of-the-art Main Beam Hard Rock TBM to be used in the excavation of the tunnel. In order to meet the aggressive construction schedule as requested by OPG/Strabag, the TBM needed to be supplied as “ready to bore” within a 12 month period after the contract was awarded to Robbins.

The Ashlu Creek Hydro-electric project, located north of Squamish, BC, at the confluence of Ashlu Creek and the Squamish River, comprises a 49 MW run-of-river project and features a 4.08 m diameter, 4.4 km power tunnel and a 128 m deep drop shaft. The Ashlu Creek Hydro-electric project is being developed by Innergex under Ashlu Creek Investments Limited. Site civil works are being completed by Ledcor CMI of Vancouver with tunnel construction by Frontier Kemper Constructors ULC under a lump sum design-build contract. Site works got underway in September 2006 with the construction of the tunnel portal and laydown area. These site works required rock slope stabilization over a 50 m rock slope to secure the laydown area as well as the construction of a tail track muck tipping station and structural wall to facilitate TBM excavation and spoil removal. Starter tunnel construction commenced in early 2007 and TBM tunneling started in the late spring of 2007 and is planned to continue until early 2009. The power tunnel is being excavated using a 1,200 kW Wirth open-type hard rock TBM dressed with 31?17&apos; cutters. The TBM featured two fixed mounted rock bolt drills behind the finger shield: these were removed and replaced with jacklegs to improve access. A probe drill at the end of the main beam is also present. The geology along the 4.4 km power tunnel comprises very strong and generally massive granitic bedrock with rock strength greater than 225 MPa. A unique feature of the project is that no subsurface investigations have been completed for the tunnel however extensive bedrock outcrops are present along the Ashlu Creek valley. A historical quarry exists approximately mid-way along the tunnel alignment that has exposed good quality granitic bedrock. TBM tunneling to date has achieved advance rates of 10?20 m/day with a maximum of 23 m and has encountered all of the anticipated six major fault zones where the installation of various standard high capacity tunnel support was successful to facilitate TBM advance through these sections.

"The REFLUX™ Classifier (RC™) consists of a fluidized bed housing, with a system of parallel inclined channels above. This system performs a simultaneous gravity separation and desliming of the feed material, utilising the inclined channels in order to retain the relatively fine dense particles. These particles promote the formation of an autogenous dense medium within the fluidized bed. Relatively large, low density particles are displaced from the fluidized bed and conveyed upwards through the inclined channels reporting to the overflow with other finer particles. Given the hydrodynamic role of both the particle size and density in determining the particle transport through a water based suspension, all gravity separators operate over a limited size range. In the case of the REFLUX™ Classifier, efficient separations can be produced across a very broad size range, from nearly 10 mm down to 10 m, however, for a given application the size range is much more limited. This study was concerned with the processing of dense minerals over a broad size range, and the need for multistage processing. Here the overflow from the first stage cascades to the second stage, incorporating coarse gangue rejection. This approach is shown to deliver remarkably high grades and recovery.INTRODUCTION The performance of the REFLUXTM Classifier (RC™) in beneficiating fine coal is well documented (Galvin, 2012). Although the technology can be applied to relatively fine particles below 0.1 mm, or coarser particles below 2.0 mm or even 8.0 mm (Galvin et al., 2010), in each case the technology is applicable to limited particle size ranges. In coal preparation, the most common size range is 0.25 to 2.0 mm, covering an eight-fold range in the particle diameter. Coal has a relatively low density, typically below 1600 kg/m3, with a significant portion below 1400 kg/m3. In water, the buoyant density difference (~ 400 kg/m3) is therefore low compared to that of gangue minerals (1600 kg/m3) by a factor of 4, enhancing the potential for separation. Thus, in coal preparation, the technology can be applied over a commensurately broader size range, typically up to eight-fold."

"Hydrometallurgical recovery of metals from printed circuit board waste typically involves multiple leaching stages; conventionally, base metals dissolution by mineral acids is followed by leaching of gold using cyanide or halide based lixiviants. Alternative lixiviants for gold leaching can reduce the potential hazardous nature of operation. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using thiosulfate as lixiviant for gold leaching from waste printed circuit boards. Batch leaching tests were performed to investigate the effects of thiosulfate concentration (0.1 – 0.2 M), ammonium concentration (0.2 – 0.4 M), pH (9 – 10.5), solids content (25 – 50 g/L), and copper content of the feed material on the gold leaching behavior. The concentrations of metals in liquid samples were determined by means of inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, and high pressure liquid chromatography was used to evaluate thiosulfate degradation/consumption. The ratio of thiosulfate to ammonia was found to have the most significant effect on the extent of gold leaching, with the best gold extraction observed at a ratio of 0.5 mole thiosulfate per mole ammonia. The lower pH range of 9 – 9.5 generally produced better Au leaching, while low copper extraction during the first stage base metal leaching stages has proven to be detrimental to gold leaching from the residue. Thiosulfate degradation/consumption increased and gold extraction decreased with higher residual copper in the feed. An optimum gold extraction of 78.5 % from base metal leach residue was achieved with 0.2 M thiosulfate, 0.4 M ammonia, and 0.02 M cupric ions at 25°C in the pH range 9 – 9.5.INTRODUCTION Background and Aim The recycling of e-waste is becoming increasingly important as it provides certain economic benefits apart from the obvious environmental benefits. Printed circuit boards (PCBs) are found in most forms of e-waste and contain especially high concentrations of base and precious metals. "AbstractThe Tresfjord bridge is with its variety in foundation concepts and difficult soil conditions one of the most geotechnically challenging projects in Norway at the time. The project comprises design of large concrete caissons, steel core piles through large rock fills, and closed end steel pipe piles in up to 40m water depth driven in very hard moraine. Test piling has also been conducted to check feasibility of the concept, and PDA measurements have been used to verify sufficient capacity of piles. FactsThe Tresfjord bridge is part of the new export road from Ålesund to Åndalsnes on the North-West coast of Norway built by the Norwegian Road Administration. The bridge will reduce travel time with about 30 min between the cities, see Figure 1. The bridge is planned to open summer 2015.The Bridge crosses the Tresfjord and will be 1290 m long. The bridge is built as a free cantilever bridge and will be resting on a total of 20 nos. of foundations, where two are abutments resting on steel core piles, three are casted directly on bed rock and 13 are foundations resting on steel pipe piles. The last two foundations holding the main span will be concrete caissons resting on bed rock and moraine. Figure 2 shows a 3D model of how the finished bridge will look. Multiconsult AS is responsible for design and pile supervision , while the Joint-Venture Bilfinger-Tresfjordbridge ANS is responsible contractor.Soil ConditionsPercussion soundings and sampling together with coring have been performed in the individual foundations using a small geotechnical equipped vessel. Acoustic and refraction seismic profiling have also been carried out to tie in the layers between the boreholes.The soil conditions are varying over the length, but are in general dominated by a soft top layer (2-4 m) of sediments over very hard moraine with occasionally large boulders. Piles in the two foundations closest to shore on the western side of the bridge are piled to bed rock with penetrations up to about 27 m in soil.Water depth varies from about 10 to 40 m for the piled foundations. Figure 3 show how the topography of the seabed varies over the bridges length."

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) has been procuring the expansion of their underground mass rapid transit rail network at a prodigious rate since the first line opened in 1987. Four lines (149 km) are currently operating and several more lines are at various stages of planning/construction; one of these is the Downtown line stage 2 (DTL 2).DTL 2 contract C917 was awarded in September 2009 for S$320 M. On 18 June 2013 the original contractor became insolvent, leaving the works incomplete. Following a fast-tracked tender process, McConnell Dowell was awarded the S$254 M contract on 29 August 2013 to complete the works. This contract includes two underground stations constructed by cut-and-cover methods and twin bored tunnels between the stations. Each tunnel is 1400 m long, excavated by earth pressure balanced (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) at an average depth of 20 m and segment lined to 5.8 m inner diameter. The tunnel alignment is located under a busy five-lane road lined with prime residential real estate and congested with utilities.To compound the difficulty the tunnels are located within the notorious Bukit Timah Granite formation. This has a very wide range of strength, from below 1 MPa to over 300 MPa. This strength range is a consequence of six weathering grades, from soil to fresh rock, with the fresh granite causing severe abrasion problems. The various grades can occur within a very short distance of each other. Consequently, the problem of supporting a mixed face exists, particularly in the intermediate weathering grades where intact rock is encountered in the invert and corestones within a loose soil matrix in the crown, which can increase the instability by allowing the ground to flow into the TBM.The focus of this paper will be the excavation of the bored tunnels by EPB TBM used by McConnell Dowell to complete these challenging works.CITATION:Jones, G and Shepherd, J, 2014.
