Experiments were carried out to determine the efficacy of bubble column flocculation. An acid-base neutralization method was used to determine the mixing time in a 0.064- by 1.5-m bubble column equipped with a Mottporous sparger. The mixing times decreased as the tracer injection point approached the gas sparger. Preliminary flocculation experiments on two clay samples were carried out. The effects of frother addition and airflow rate are presented and discussed.

The recovery and concentration of ultra-fine iron ore can provide significant economic benefits. Presently, there are limited options available given the low settling rates achieved by conventional gravity separation and the relatively poor performance of reverse flotation. The Reflux Classifier is a new water-based gravity separation technology that consists of a set of parallel inclined channels positioned above a vertical fluidised section. This arrangement promotes a powerful throughput advantage compared to conventional fluidisation and a highly selective hydrodynamic basis for achieving sharp separations. A high shear rate develops within the inclined channels, which generates sufficient hydrodynamic lift to convey the lower-density particles (even if they are relatively coarse) to overflow while retaining the high-density particles (even those that are ultra-fine) for discharge to the underflow. The technology has previously been used around the world on particle sizes in excess of 0.1 mm. The present work, however, is concerned with density-based separations down to much finer particle sizes approaching 0.01 mm.A major advantage of the Reflux Classifier technology is the achievement of simultaneous gravity separation and desliming via a single-stage separation. A series of continuous experiments was conducted using an iron ore feed with head grade of 35 wt per cent FeT and nominal top size of 0.106 mm, with 59 wt per cent being below 0.038 mm in size. At a low throughput of 1.5 t/(m2 h), the Reflux Classifier produced high-grade products at a high recovery. For the entire feed, grades of 66.1 wt per cent FeT with Fe recoveries of 80 per cent were achieved in a single-stage separation. Within the 0.020–0.038 mm size fraction, grades of 68.8 per cent were achieved with iron recoveries of 94.7 per cent. Excellent recoveries of up to 57.0 per cent were achieved for the -0.020 mm size fraction. The ability of the inclined channels to retain the fine dense material further enhances the effectiveness of the Reflux Classifier by creating an autogenous dense medium effect within the vertical section. "The field demonstration portion of the Underground Grouting and Ground Improvement (UG&GI) short course offered by the Colorado School of Mines was held on May 18, 2016 at Baski Inc.’s Yard in Denver, CO.Numerous full field scale demonstrations of grouting methods and equipment were conducted under various field conditions. As part of these field tests, permeation grouting testing and demonstrations were also conducted. Various cement grout mixes were injected into 1.5-m (60-in.) tall transparent sand columns under controlled conditions (Fig. 1). The objective of the sand column permeation grouting demonstrations in the study was to show students the effects of ordinary Portland cement versus ultrafine cement on the engineering properties of the grout, and the permeation height through various types of soil stratigraphic layers in the sand columns. Similar previous demonstrations have had a specific focus on various brands of Type I-II Portland cements and ultrafine cements with a range of water cement ratios and injection pressures. More detailed information about these previous studies can be found in published proceedings (e.g. Henn et al., 2009 -2011).Equipment and material usedThe five clear plastic sand columns were 191 mm (7.5 in.) inside diameter and 1,524 mm (60 in.) tall. Each sand column had a 19 mm (0.75 in.) diameter hole drilled at the base (bottom) of the blind flange for injection of the grout. A perforated plate and/or screen at the base of the sand columns helped to prevent sand from plugging injection port. A ChemGrout grout plant was used for the demonstration consisting of 0.36 m3 (97 gal) high shear (colloidal) tank mixer, a 0.36 m3 (97 gal) agitator tank and a progressive helical cavity pump with maximum output capacity of 77 L/min (20 gpm) at a maximum discharge pressure of 265 psi (18 bar) (Fig. 2). A simple grout header arrangement consisting of control valves, pressure gauges, flow meter, grout delivery and return line, and a short injection line was also custom built. Also used were infra-red thermometers to measure the temperatures of the grout mix batches, CRD and marsh funnels to measure viscosity, baroid mud balance to measure specific gravity, and a digital scale to measure weights. The grout materials used were Holkim Portand cement (Type I-II), Nippon Steel Sumikin superfine cement and U.S. grout ultrafine cement."

History of Underground Coal Mining in Illinois The production of coal in Illinois using underground mining methods, commenced early in the 1800's; however, the first shaft entrance was not sunk until 1842. The shafts range in depth from 16 feet (4.9 m) in Peoria County to 1,001 feet (306 m) in Christian County. The earlier mines were smell, private operations that worked outcrops and shallow seams at less than 100 feet (30.5 m) in depth. By 1975, there were reported 4,076 abandoned underground coal mines in 70 Illinois counties (Nawrot, 1977). There were many more mines; however, only 4,076 underground mines have been documented. Small mining operations characterize the majority of the underground mines. There have been no significant multiple seam operations in Illinois. The most extensively mined seams were the number two, five, and six seams. Number two seam was worked in the early 1900's by 252 mines in the longwall mining region of northern Illinois (Nawrot, 1977). Available records for 2,054 abandoned mines identify 1,043 as shaft nines, 700 as slope mines, and 311 as drift mines. Some operators began reporting annually to the State Department of Labor in 1879 and by 1882 all mine operators were reporting. Annual reporting still continues to date. The information is compiled by the State Department of Panes and Minerals in their "Annual Coal Report." By the end of 1974 there were 800,000 acres (323,756 hectares) of abandoned underground coal mine workings (Smith-Stall, 1975)2 Copies of abandoned underground coal mine maps may be inspected by interested parties in the State Department of fines and Minerals office in Springfield, Illinois, or at the office of any county recorder for mines within their county. Copies of active underground coal mine maps may be inspected at a State mine rescue station near the mine site or at the county recorder's in the county in which the mine is located. Copies of active underground coal nine naps shall be open to the examination of all interested persons, but such examination shall be made only in the presence of the State mane inspector or the recorder. At the present time, the Department of Mines and Minerals has 1,746 maps of abandoned underground coal mines in its possession. These maps cover the majority of

"On April 4, 2017, the largest earth-pressure-balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) ever built finally completed its 2.7-km (1.7-mile) journey beneath Seattle, WA, nearly four years after it began boring the SR-99 tunnel that will eventually replace Seattle’s Alaskan Way Viaduct.By now, readers of this publication are familiar with the ordeal that began on Dec. 6, 2016, when the machine overheated and shut down. Until that point, the TBM, named Bertha, had grabbed headlines for being the largest in the world with a 17-m (57.6-ft) diameter face. But after the incident that stopped the progress, the headlines suddenly stopped focusing on the engineering marvel of the tunnel project and began asking what went wrong. Just 300 m (1,000 ft) into the tunneling journey the machine was stuck, unable to move forward and impossible to retract.The project’s contractors, Seattle Tunnel Partners,(STP JV) – a design-build consortium comprised of Dragados - USA, Tutor Perini, say a 20-cm (8-in.) steel well-casing buried in the path of the machine caused the problems that halted the TBM. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) disagrees, and the issue over who ultimately pays for the repairs is now with the courts.Eventually, engineers determined the best way to get Bertha back to work was to dig a 36-m (120-ft), deep concrete lined shaft pit in front of the machine and lift the 1.8-kt (2,000-st) cutterhead out for repairs. The repairs took two years but eventually the machine resumed mining in January 2016. In April 2017, the TBM finished building the tunnel, breaking through at the tunnel’s north end near Seattle’s Space Needle, with little to no ground surface movement measured on the entire alignment.While the cause of the TBM breakdown and who should pay for repairs was debated above ground, the work below ground continued. David Sowers, deputy program administrator, engineering and program management with WSDOT, told Mining Engineering during the 2017 Cutting Edge Conference in Seattle that in addition to the technical marvel that the tunnel became, the fact the parties involved were able to work through the unprecedented challenge is a great example of how to overcome challenges on massive projects."

The major fluorite producer in British Columbia was the Rock Candy Mine, inactive since 1942. Other deposits of economic interest include the Rexspar deposit, in which fluorite is associated with uranium and rare earth mineralization, and the Eaglet and Liard River occurrences. THE former Rock Candy fluorite mine, located 26 km north of Grand Forks, is the only major past producer of fluorite in British Columbia. The deposit was in production from 1918 to 1929 and again in 1942; total output was about 36,000 tonnes with average grade between 22 and 32 per cent CaF2. The fluorite body occupies a steeply-dipping vein structure, approximately 175 m long and up to 12 m wide, in porphyritic syenite. The chief vein-filling minerals are quartz and fluorite with local small len ses of barite. Fluorite content decreases with depth and the deposit becomes silicified. The Rexspar (or Birch Island) fluorite deposit is located 130 km north of Kamloops. The deposit is complex with rare earth elements and high uranium values, but !1uorite mineralization forms an independent zone adjacent to the uranium orebodies. Fluorite is present as fine-grained impregnations and as breccia cement in strongly schistose or brecciated alkali feld spar porphyry. Reported reserves are 1,088,000 tonnes of 22 per cent CaF2 or 450,000 tonnes of 29 per cent CaF2. 268 Another potential deposit of fluorite is Eaglet, situated on the north side of Quesnel Lake. Fluorite occurs as a stock work with scattered veins and irregular lenses up to 20 centimetres wide and as impregnations in altered Proterozoic Kaza Group feld spathic gneiss over an area of 1,500 metres by 500 metres. To date (1983) approximately $2 million have been spent on the exploration of this property and reserves of 18.8 mimon tonnes grading 11.59 per cent CaF2 have been outlined . A group of significant occurrences is known from north of Liard River Hot Springs Park , where fluorite occurs in small zones up to 17 m thick along the interface between Middle Devonian Dunedin Formation limestone and Middle Devonian to Mississippian Besa River Formation argillite. Fluorite, associated with witherite, barytocalcite and barite, is present as replacement bodies, breccia fillings and minor veins.

A few hates on the occurrence and significance of mud volcanoes in Colombia may be of interest at the present time, owing to the renewed activity in geological exploration of the coastal regions bordering the Caribbean Sea. The best-known volcanoes are found a few miles from the seacoast. One is situated to the south of Puerto Colombia; the second, to the east of Cartagena near the village of Turbaco; and the third, near the village of Puerto Escondido south of the Sinu River. Others are reported in more inaccessible localities. Usually they stand 2 1/2 or 3 ft. (0.762 or 0.914 m.) above the surrounding ground at the crater, though several craters from 10 to 20 ft. -(3.04 to 6.09 m.) "apart will often build up an extensive mound at low gradient. The shallow mound may cover 1/2 or 3/4 acre (0.2 to 0.3 ha.) with an elevation of 12 or 15 ft. (3.65 or 4.57 m.) at the, center. The craters are formed of hardened blue clay; the inside diameters vary from 14 to 24 in. (35.56 to 60.96 cm.). The rim is continuous, except on one side where there is usually a cut 3 or 4 in. deep, thus allowing an overflow. The craters are filled to the' rim-cut with a thick mixture of blue clay mud and water, which is kept in agitation by escaping gas. Fig. 1 shows the bubble in the act of bursting and Fig. 2 the appearance of the surface of the viscous fluid a second or so later. The frequency of the explosions is determined by the weight of the column of fluid in the neck of the volcano, consequently, such explosions are not synchronous in a group of craters. Ordinarily, there arc two or three explosions in about 3 minutes. The supply of gas is small but steady and sufficient pressure must accumulate before the bubble can enter the column of fluid. The water is derived from the surface and enters the scdirnentary strata not far distant from the volcano. During long dry seasons, as the supply of water fails the volcano dries and geyser action ceases. The temperature of the muddy fluid is normal; the gas is dry and inflammable. - No petroleum products come with the gas. On the surface of the fluid, there is sometimes a dark brown streaky scum, which

THE pressures of Mn(g) in equilibrium with Mn7C3 and graphite have been measured by McCabe and Hudson' and Butler, McCabe, and paxton2 by means of graphite, zirconia, and Ta-Mo Knudsen cells. The details of corrections in their measurements were somewhat different from those of the authors;3'4 hence, further independent results at higher temperatures seemed to be warranted. The stoichiom-etry of Mn7C3 in equilibrium with graphite and its stability up to the vicinity of 1373 °K have been satisfactorily established by Kuo and persson5 (See also Hansen and Anderko).' The method of investigation has been described elsewhere in detail.3'4 The carbide was prepared in the manner described by McCabe and Hudson. In order to avoid possible reactions with refractory oxides, only graphite cells were used for the effusion experiments. The authors' results are the runs M-1, M-2 and M-3 listed in Table I, together with those of McCabe and co-workers. The heat capacity, c;, of Mn7C3 is not known; therefore McCable et al. plotted their data as log P vs 1/T and the results were only expressed first' as, and later2 as logP=- -14220+6.06 without further thermodynamic calculations. However, it is possible to estimate closely the necessary heat capacity as follows: When H; - &98 of CrC, or MnO, is plotted vs x, corresponding to various compounds, with temperature as the parameter, it is seen that the relationship is represented by a line of very small curvature. This relationship is also followed by other compounds which do not exhibit solid state phase transformations. In view of the fact that chromium and manganese have the atomic numbers of 24 and 25 respectively, it is reasonable to assume that H; - H;ae vs x for MnC, follows the same type of lines as those for CrC, for which adequate data are available.7 Similar correlations appear to be valid for oxides of two neighboring metals for which reliable data are available. The procedure is thus to move the lines for CrC, vertically (parallel to the axis of HT - H298) until they coincide with the points for MnC1/3, the only carbide of manganese whose H; - HO298 has been

The characteristics of alloyed anodes and their influence on the products of electrolysis and power consumption have been noted previosly ously in the literature.' This paper presents data in continuation of the subject given in an earlier paper by the authors.2 As noted in the authors1 previous paper, the objectives of this work are the reduction in the cell voltage and the purity of the cathode product resulting from the use of alloyed lead anodes. The fundamental facts developed in the previous paper were: (I) that the presence of a small amount of calcium lowers the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. below that of pure lead; and (2) that thallium when present to the extent of 4 per cent. rendered the anode practically stable, thereby lowering the contamination of the cathode by lead to a very insignificant amount. The specific features determined in this recent work are as follows: 1. The lowest limit of calcium in the lead which will still give maximum lowering of the anode potential. 2. The characteristics of the thallium-calcium-lead anode. 3. The characteristics of the silver-calcium-lead anode. 4. The characteristics of the thallium-silver-calciurn-lead anode. It was determined that 0.1 per cent. calcium in the anode was sufficient to lower the anode potential approximately 50 per cent. Table 1 shows the characteristics of alloyed anodes tested. "Gold-silver mineralization at Red Mountain (1992 resource of 2.5 million tonnes grading 12.8 g/t Au and 38.1 g/t Ag) occurs within several discrete zones within a folded sequence of Middle to Late Triassic Triassic sedimentary rocks, Early Jurassic volcaniclastic and pyroclastic rocks, and Early Jurassic intrusions. Three phases of Early Jurassic sills and stocks collectively comprise the Golds/ide intrusions: (1) irregular bodies of medium-grained hornblende monzodiorite (Hillside porphyry); (2) hornblende-biotite + quartz porphyritic monzodiorite to quartz monzodiorite (Golds/ide porphyry; U-Pb zircon ages of 197.1 + 1.9 Ma); and (3) biotite porphyritic hornblende monzodiorite sills (Biotite porphyry). Contact breccias and igneous breccia dikes are common features of the Golds/ide intrusions. Chemical similarities and equivalent ages of volcanic rocks and intrusions, and the presence of intrusive clasts in volcanic rocks suggest that the intrusions are feeders to overlying volcanic units.Hydrothermal alteration affects all pre-Tertiary rocks on Red Mountain, including all phases of the Golds/ide intrusions. Several shallow-dipping alteration zones are developed sequentially above a propylitic quartz stockwork/molybdenum zone. These include: (1) sericite-quartz-pyrite alteration (pyrite-dominant alteration); (2) chlorite-K-feldspar-sericite-titanite alteration with disseminated and vein pyrrhotite (pyrrhotite-dominant alteration); and (3) brown to black tourmaline veins and K-feldspar-pyrite-titanite-actinolite alteration. Anomalous gold(> 0.3 g/t) mineralization is developed at the transition from the pyrite to the pyrrhotite dominant alteration over a > 1 km2 area. Within this anomalous zone, high-grade (3 g/t to 20 g/t Au) gold-silver mineralization occurs in 5 m to 29 m thick, semi-tabular pyrite + pyrrhotite stockworks with intense sericitic alteration and surrounding disseminated sphalerite + pyrrhotite.Stratigraphic, spatial and geochronologic relations and alteration zoning indicate that mineralization formed in a subvolcanic environment at the top of the Golds/ide intrusions and at the base of the Early Jurassic volcanic pile. The Golds/ide porphyry is interpreted to be the mineralizing intrusion. The alteration zoning, molybdenum-copper mineralized quartz stockworks, extensive Ksilicate and tourmaline alteration, and the relationship with a hypabyssal porphyritic intrusion show similarities to many porphyry systems."

"The Lindsley project was a program of deep drilling to test the contact down-dip from two nickel-copper deposits, one uneconomical and the other mined out. The role of Borehole Pulse EM(PEM) was to detect the higher grade, more massive sulphide zones if they were missed by a drillhole, and to help determine geometry if the zones were intersected. Two problems appeared as the PEM survey progressed: (1) conductivity-thickness as measured by the PEM did not always relate to economic sulphides as determined by the market; (2) a pattern of unusual PEM anomalies was obtained that indicated something odd and big, but the cause was unknown. A large fold structure subsequently was indicated by a program of deepening previous holes, the third of which intersected high-grade mineralization below 1280 m. Falconbridge is in the process of shaft sinking and underground exploration.IntroductionThe Falconbridge Lindsley property is on the south rim of the Sudbury basin, 8 Ian north of downtown Sudbury. The original property was acquired by a prospector named James Stobie, who, in early August 1885, staked a showing that later became the Mount Nickel mine (Fig. I). On August 10 Stobie staked another property that would become the Little Stobie mine, and at the end of the same month he staked the main Stobie orebody.In 1888, the ground immediately west of the MOlU1t Nickel find was staked. This ground contained the Blezard deposit (Fig. 1) which was put into production in 1889 and was eventually acquired by Inco. Down-dip from the Blezard workings, on Falconbridge ground, is located the upper Lindsley No. 1 deposit which was drilled off by Falconbridge in the 1940s to 1950s. A decision to go underground on the Lindsley No.1 mineralization was made in 1969, but the project was cancelled in 1971 because of declining nickel prices. The shaft was stopped at 95 m, and the headframe and hoist were sold. Further surface exploration drilling in the 1970s discovered the deeper Lindsley No. 2 zone, but as it had grades similar to those of the No. 1 zone, it too was considered uneconomic."

Petrographic properties of carbonate rocks are useful guides to the utilization of these rocks in SO2-scrubbing systems. High porosity and fineness of grain are thought to be the principal properties that contribute to high dissolution rates of the rocks in the scrubbing liquor. Lake marls and chalks are the major types of carbonate rocks that have these properties. Lake marls are composed mainly of equant grains of calcite (mean grain size generally less than 4 microns) weakly agglomerated in- to larger, porous particles. The marls commonly consist of 80 to 90 percent CaCo3 as calcite and aragonite. Impurities are, for the most part, quartz silt and organic matter. The average pore volume for samples of lake marls (1- to 1.2-mm particles) is about 0.50 cc/g, which corresponds to a porosity of about 57 percent. The mean size of pores in these marls is generally between 1 and 2 microns in diameter. Surface areas of lake marls range from 0.8 to 6.8 m2/g. Chalks have grain sizes and shapes similar to those of lake marls, but they generally have smaller amounts of quartz and organic matter and minor amounts of clay minerals. Pore volumes differ from one chalk formation to another; the 1- to 1. 2-mm particles average about 0.20 cc/g, which corresponds to a porosity of about 35 percent. The mean diameter of pores in chalks tested ranges from 0. 15 to 0.76 micron. Surface areas of chalks range from 3. 2 to 20. 1 m2/g. In the United States lake marls are restricted largely to Pleistocene- age sediments that occur in the states around the Great Lakes. Chalk and chalky limestones are restricted mainly to the Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary strata in the Kansas-Nebraska-Colorado area and in the south- eastern states, from Texas to Florida. Results of laboratory tests of the relative dissolution rates of samples at pH 6 and 44°C indicate that, in addition to many lake marls and chalks, oolitic aragonite, pelecypod shells, and carbonate waste sludges from certain industrial plants also have high dissolution rates.

INTRODUCTION The National Park Service is entering the seventh year of monitoring caves for the presence of radon and radon daughter products. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the radiation monitoring program at Mammoth Cave National Park, and to present some of the results of this program. Mammoth Cave National Park completed five years of collecting data on May 1, 1981: although Mammoth Cave encompasses approximately 361 km of underground passageways, this paper will concentrate on only a 2.2 km section of the cave known as the Historic Tour. Included in this paper is a discussion of the methods the Nations Park Service uses to protect employees from exposure to alpha radiation. MONITORING METHODS The National Park Service monitors cave atmospheres utilizing the procedures provided by the Mine Safety and Health Administration in their Radiation Monitoring Training Manual (Anon., 1976). This procedure is described as the Kusnetz Method (Kusnetz, 1956) of radon daughter monitoring. Due to the length of the tours at Mammoth Cave, it has been determined to be the most practical procedure. The Historic Tour is a 2.2 km (1.4 mile) loop through passageways ranging in size from 18 m high by 12 m wide, to 0.9 m high by 0.6 m wide. Seven five minute walking samples were taken for this cave tour by drawing at least 10 1 of air through a 25 mm fiberglass filter utilizing a Monitaire Sampler Pump. The radon daughter concentration levels were determined using an alpha scintillation counter to measure the alpha activity on the filter paper. The Monitaire Sampler Pump was calibrated each day prior to monitoring the cave tour and the scintillation counter was calibrated by procedures described by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (Beckman, 1975) at six month intervals. Guidelines established by the National Park Service and approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration require weekly sampling when the average working level exceeds 0.30 (NPS-14, 1980). A working level is an atmospheric concentration of radon (Rn-222) daughters which will deliver 1.3 x 10 5 MeV of alpha energy per liter of air in decaying through Ra C' (Po-214). The Historic Tour has continually exceeded the 0.30 working level average and has been monitored weekly. Generally, only radon daughter working level data has been collected on the Historic Tour due to limited personnel. However, other special measurements of the uncombined fractions of radon daughters with wire screens, tsivoglou method for radon daughter sampling (Thomas modification, 1970), and thoron daughter monitoring. These special measurements have not been routine due to time limitations involved in radon daughter sampling of other occupied portions of the cave. SUMMARY OF DATA The Historic Tour has been the most consistantly monitored tour since elevated levels of alpha radiation were found to exist at Mammoth. Cave. It is also the only natural entrance to the main sections of the cave and provided an opportunity to study man made actions upon the natural entrance. For these reasons the Historic Tour was isolated for study. Beginning October 10, 1977, and ending November 20, 1977, a pilot project was undertaken involving the Historic Tour and the practice of covering the natural entrance to this tour with sheet metal in the winter months. The purpose was to study radiation levels on the Historice Tour while the covers were on and off the natural entrance. In this pilot project, comparisons were made with incast air with covers on and off the entrance, and outcast air with covers on and off the entrance. TABLE 1 Incast air Mean W.L. Decreased 5% Covers off. . . . 1.40 W.L. when covers on The natural entrance was artificially covered in the winter months (Yarborough, 1978) to protect the visitor from the extremely cold incast air, in the first four years of monitoring. The data in Table 1, illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, shows that this action increased the radon daughter working levels on the Historic Tour by 54% when the covers were on the entrance and the airflow was incast. "Cathodic and anodic reactions in an acidic nitrate medium were studied in reference to the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide from pyrolusite' (Mn02) ores by reductive leaching. Two USA ores were investigated. The reductant for the pyrolusite ore is produced cathodically in an electrolytic cell and can either be nitrous acid (HN02) or nitric oxide gas (NO). In this work emphasis was placed on the nitrous acid leach. In a high-temperature leach in a nitrous/nitric acid medium, manganese and silver are solubilized and iron is not. Anodic electrowinning of manganese dioxide from the acidic manganese nitrate electrolyte yields flaky y-Mn02, similar to that produced from sulfate and chloride electrolytes. Cathodic regeneration of nitrorts acid was studied in a membrane cell in 1.0 M nitric acid and 0.0 to 0.1 M nitrous acid on a' platinized titanium cathode. At cathode potentials ranging from +950 to +700 mV (SHE), cathodic reduction to nitrous acid takes place, at cathode potentials < +700 mV, cathodic reduction of nitrous acid to nitric oxide takes place. A conceptual process is presented and discussed.IntroductionManganiferous-silver oresLarge reserves of manganiferous-silver ores are present in the Southwestern United States and Latin America. These ores are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment, due to the insolubility of the higher oxides of manganese (Mn 4+) in all common lixiviants such as cyanide solutions, dilute sulfuric acid, nitric acid, ammonia, salt solution, thiosulfates, etc. The silver is either bound by the insoluble manganese, or is rendered inaccessible to cyanide leach solution by the surrounding manganese mineralization.Higher oxides of manganese will dissolve if they are first reduced pyrometallurgically to manganous oxide (Mn2+). This is a widely used pretreatment for manganese dioxide ores and subsequent dissolution in sulfuric acid is common. In order to avoid the pyrometallurgical pretreatment with its large energy requirements and gaseous emissions, fully hydrometallurgical processes have been proposed. These processes are based on the presence of a reductant in solution, in order to reduce the insoluble higher oxides of manganese to soluble lower oxides. Aqueous S02 has been proposed and tested on industrial scale by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. After washing, silver could be extracted by cyanidation. The neutralization of the pulp prior to cyanidation however causes problems in filtration and the reagent consumptions are high [1]. More recently, acidified thiourea and bacteria were proposed for the solubilization of both manganese and silver in a single leach step. High extractions were obtained, but drawbacks of these methods are high reagent consumption or slow kinetics [2,3]. For the options of manganese recovery from the leach filtrate, precipitation with persulfate or ammonium carbonate and ion exchange have been proposed. The proposed options for silver reclaim are precipitation with either zinc or Na2S and adsorption onto activated carbon."

The Palabora ore consists of two types, a carbonatite containing a low titanium magnetite, and a foskorite containing high titanium magnetite. The latter type also contains substantial quantities of phosphate. These two ore types are separately crushed and are kept separate through copper flotation and magnetic separation, for recovery of magnetite, with the low Ti magnetite being shipped as iron ore. High phosphate tailings are pumped to Foskor, a government-owned phosphate plant nearby. The Palabora plant was originally designed in 1966 for 33, 000 tpd using two 54 in. by 74 in. Allis -Chalmers gyratories; two 7 ft (2. 13 m) standards; four 7 ft shortheads; and six grinding lines, each using one 1,200 hp rod mill and two 1,200 hp ball mills. A fifth short- head and one more grinding line were added later; and with flowsheet improvements, the capacity of the plant was increased to 59, 500 stpd. A further plant expansion involving a third 54 in. primary and two 32 ft by 15 ft (9.75 by 4.6 m) 9,000 hp autogenous mills and another flotation section will bring its capacity to 87,500 stpd in 1977. These two fully autogenous mills are constructed entirely out of doors near the primary crusher, and the ground ore will be pumped a mile to the concentrator by a five-stage pumping system. The Palabora ore is mined with 6, 10, and 12 7d (4.6, 7.6, and 9. 2 cu m) shovels and hauled to the crushers in 110 and 165 st trucks. Sixty-five ton trucks were originally used, but the crusher dump pockets were designed for larger units. Dump pockets, crushers, feeders, and take- away belts are offset in order to keep the two ore types separate. Centerlines of the crushers are only 43 ft (13. 1 m) apart; but, because of their being offset, maintenance room is ample. Initially, more carbonatite ore than foskorite was mined; but as the pit has deepened, this ratio has been reversed. The Palabora ore breaks in the pit with a large amount of oversize boulders; and, with the use of larger trucks, a splitter has been installed on one side of each dump pocket to protect the crusher spider. Smaller trucks dump on the opposite side. To accomodate the splitter, the pocket edge has been raised one meter and moved back one meter. Dust is collected through a special vent shaft between the crushers and the mantle relining area; but even so, two high-pressure water spray headers with nozzles are installed under the edge of the pocket at each dumping position. While only one truck dumps at a time, sprays from all four headers are used to suppress dust. Any leakage of water through the seal around the upper bowl of the crusher is caught by a circular trough under the seal and directed to a sump pump. At this point, there

The project is undertaken by Elgas Pty Ltd, a 50 per cent joint venture between AGL and BOC, to store 65 000 t of LPG in underground storage at Port Botany, NSW. The contractor, Concrete Constructions Pty Ltd, elected to use drilling and blasting techniques. This Research & Development (R&D) study was conducted in the field of applied blasting engineering in Ethiopia, within the AKH Railway Project, which was built in Girena, within the boundaries of the province of Mersa, in the Basalt Quarry at km 346, Ashangi Formation, occured in Eocene geological time in the aphanitic trachibasalt. Under the scope of the study, which has been performed to determine the effects of the artificial discontinuities at different depths and the effects of artificial discontinuities through structural damage risk, three test areas, at the same location and same formation, were considered. Six numbers of artificial discontinuities, each 10 m (32, 81 ft) transverse, were created by using pre-splitting and drilling-blasting technology. The number of sequential artificial discontinuities on each test area is two and they have the same length. The length of artificial discontinuities are; 6,80 m (22,31 ft) at the first test area, 13,60 m (44,62 ft) at the second test area and 17,00 m (55,77 ft) at the third test area respectively. The distance between sequential artificial discontinuities is 8 m (26,25ft) on each test area. Thirty-one shots were executed in order to produce vibration (10 shots on the first test area, 11 shots on the second area, 10 shots on the third test area). One hundred and twenty-three seismic recordings were obtained during the execution of the shots by using 4 seismographs. The closest distance between the shot points and the nearest measuring station is 5,30 m (17,39 ft). During the shots, the rock was cracked and there was no fragmentation and/or fly rock. At the first test area, measured PPV values are between 25,40-127,00 mm/s (1-5 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 50,80 mm/s (2 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. At the second test area, measured PPV values are between 76,20-177,80 mm/s (3-7 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 76,20 mm/s (3 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. At the third test area, measured PPV values are between 50,80-279,40 mm/s (2-11 inch/s) before the first artificial discontinuity and less than 50,80 mm/s (2 inch/s) after the second artificial discontinuity. Peak reduction rates in Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) values determined by measuring as follows: In the first test area 95,77% (106,00 mm/s to 4,48 mm/s) (4,17 in/s to 0,18 in/s), in the second test area 79,77% (176,00 mm/s to 35,60 mm/s) (6,93 in/s to 1,40 in/s), in the third test area 95,85% (from 205,00 mm/s to 8,55 mm/s) (from 8,07 in/s to 0,34 in/s). The arithmetic mean of the differences of PPV values (decrease rate) is 82,66% in the first test area, 69,37% in the second test area, and 92,03% in the third test area. The highest sound value is 138,50 dB and is defined as “noise”. When the measured parameter values are examined it was determined on the USBM norm graphs that these vibrations carry a risk of structural damage in the region before the first artificial discontinuity. While passing through artificial discontinuities the vibrations progress by losing energy and the vibrations passing through two artificial discontinuities do not carry structural damage risk under current conditions.
