5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes' whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope's size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

The demand for lithium may increase because of its potential use id lithium batteries and in the generation of electrical power by fusion. Therefore, lithium abundance in some United States oil-field brines was surveyed. Oil-field brines from numerous locations were found to contain more than 100 mg/l lithium and several exceeded 500 mg/l. An area of 25,000 km2, with a reservoir thickness of 60 m, an effective porosity of 5 percent, and a brine with a specific gravity of 1.2 containing 100 mg/l of lithium, contains about 0.75 x 106 tonnes (1 tonne = 1 metric ton = 1,000 kg) of lithium in 7.5 km3 of brine. It is postulated that the brines were enriched in lithium by lithium-rich spring water or lithium leached from volcanic rocks followed by evaporation sequences.

"After six years of successful excavation with a support pattern, some roof failures have happened in a room-and-pillar underground mine excavated in a stratified rock mass. In this paper the authors give explanation to the failure mechanisms and redesign the support in order to solve the recent problems of roof collapse.The mine magnesite bed is approximately 14 m thick, and runs in the E-W direction with an average dip of 18º. Due to mine constraints and the inexpensiveness of the ore, the excavation is performed in the mineral itself, avoiding the need for mining dumps and waste excavation. Rooms and drifts are oriented in the mineral bed to form an angle of 19º to the direction of the strata, reducing the roadway gradients to less than 10%. Rooms are 11 m wide and pillars are 7 m wide. They are designed to leave a 1 meter thick magnesite bed in the roof of the rooms to act as a supporting beam. More often than not there is a layer of very poor quality marly shale up to 1 m thick resting on this magnesite beam. Overlying the poor quality marly shale there is a better quality, self-supporting sandy shale.First, a characterization of the involved rock masses (magnesite, marly shale and sandy shale) is performed, collecting the geotechnical data from previous studies and performing new in situ geotechnical surveys to check the soundness of the previous data. A distinction is made between different quality zones inside the mine by means of the RMR classification, associated to the occurrence of faults.Back-analysis of some of the failed rooms and data from exploration boreholes were used to determine the failure mechanisms (associated to Voussoir type failure or occurrence of sub-horizontal joints crossing the magnesite beam). Based on an understanding of these mechanisms, the method used to design the support and to analyse the stability of the different possible thicknesses of the magnesite beams of the rooms and drifts of the mine were improved.Numerical models of the most relevant conditions found in the mine were performed in order to better understand the behaviour of the roofs and to simulate the supporting solution obtained in the previous analyses.The most relevant conclusions with regard to the main elements causing the instability of the roof include the appearance of sub-horizontal discontinuities crossing the magnesite bed, which causes total instability of the roof and usually leads to collapse; excessive thinness of the magnesite beam in the problematic rooms; and the relaxation of the deepest (around 270 m in depth) zone of the mine because of existing faults."

INTRODUCTION Shabanie mine, situated some 180 km east of Bula¬wayo, has been a producer of chrysotile asbestos for more than 50 years. The ore bodies occur in serpentinized dunite, which overlies talc-carbonate schist. A zone of relatively competent rock of varying thickness occurs between the schist and the ore bodies, which are gen¬erally less competent. The hanging wall of the ore bodies is economic, and the hanging-wall serpentine carries a variable subeconomic amount of fiber. It is important to note that, in general, the ore body competence is less than that of the foot and hanging-wall formations. Historical After surface operations ceased, cut-and-fill stoping was used to win ore from underground; this was success¬ful until the increasingly stoped-out area caused insta¬bility in the stope pillars and back. Consequently, dur¬ing the early 1950s, a gradual change to cave-mining methods was made, the ore being won by hand lashing in drawpoints, situated in the basement of the stope blocks, and passed through orepasses under gravity to the haulage level some 13 m below. About this time, interest was focused on the sub¬level caving method in use in Swedish iron ore mines: it was felt that it might be applied economically to the Shabanie ore bodies. Accordingly, in 1958, an experi¬mental stope block was laid out in which sublevel inter¬vals and extraction tunnel spacing were 9 m. The tun¬nels (ring drilling drives) were oriented on strike-in contrast to the Swedish system, in which crosscuts that retreat from hanging to footwall are used. The advantages of the method were quickly appre¬ciated by the operating personnel and, despite the in¬evitable teething troubles pertaining to the introduction of any new mining method, it was not long before sub¬level caving was providing a high proportion of the mill feed. The disadvantages also became apparent at an early stage, however, and, from that time to the present, continuing modifications have been made to mining lay¬outs in an effort to improve ore recovery. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The mine is served by a vertical hoisting shaft, in which two skips, a man cage and a service cage, provide adequate capacity for production requirements. The rock hoist is a Ward Leonard control hoist, in which two electric motors drive a common gearbox. The man winder is driven by an a-c motor. Several auxiliary shafts provide secondary egress and intake and return ventilation. Main haulage levels are above (Fig. I a and b). Blasthole fan patterns are drilled by drifters of 100 mm bore, drilling 41-mm holes; when a sufficient strike length has been drilled, a slot is cut in the upper¬most sublevel and the rings are broken into the slot. Initially, a limited tonnage is drawn, since it is essential to ensure that the hanging wall caves behind the retreat¬ing stope face. Once this has been established, maxi¬mum tonnage can be drawn, as described later in this chapter, under the heading "Draw Control." The broken rock is loaded by 0.14 and 0.20-m3 load¬ers into cocopans (rocker-dumping type of tipping truck), which are hand trammed to orepasses, discharg¬ing on the haulage where 11-t electric trolley locomo¬tives haul 3.95-m3 Granby cars to the main shaft bins. As is evident from Fig. 1, the layout is simple, the block is brought rapidly into production, there is a high degree of selectivity and flexibility, and the result is a low-cost high-productivity mining method. DEVELOPMENT Main haulages are developed at 3.2 x 3.2 m, and once the service winze connections have been completed the development of the sublevels is undertaken. The footwall drives are cut first, to obtain access to the block. These ends are of the standard section, 2.4 x 2.8 m, and from them crosscuts at intervals of 70 m are driven through the ore body to the hanging wall. These crosscuts are used to supplement the geo¬logical information previously obtained from diamond core drilling, and they provide additional and more de¬tailed data on fiber percentages and lengths, structural features, and other relevant criteria which are used to build up the geological assessment of the area and to classify it in terms of the geomechanics rock classification (Laubscher and Taylor, 1977). The crosscuts also allow the necessary orepasses to be sited conveniently so that tramming distances from the loading points are not excessive. Development Drilling Once the skeleton development has been completed, the extraction headings are developed at 2.4 x 2.4 m as shown in Fig. 1. Standard development practice is to use crews of a machine operator and his helper, equipped with air-leg mounted jackhammers, to drill rounds of 1.8 m with integral tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. The high temperature processing of nickel laterite ore is currently dominated by the Rotary Kiln- Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology. The ratio of SiO2/MgO (S/M) in the ore is one of the critical parameters that determines the success of the RKEF process. Incompatible S/M ratios in the ore can cause aggressive chemical interaction between the slag and MgO refractory. The slag-refractory interaction at conditions relevant to nickel laterite ore smelting was investigated in the present study. Synthetic mixtures representing the slag compositions of nickel laterite ore smelting were prepared by mixing MgO, SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, Fe2O3, and Fe and heating the mixtures in steel containers at 1300°C under an argon atmosphere for 3 hrs. Pure MgO crucible were used as containment material in the melting process of the mixtures to represent the MgO refractory. The kinetics of the slagrefractory reaction were investigated using samples with selected initial S/M ratios of 2.0 and 3.0 (wt/wt) (with constant CaO = 3 wt per cent, Al2O3 = 5 wt per cent, FeO = 10 wt per cent) by performing melting at 1500°C in MgO crucibles for 5, 30, and 120 mins under an argon atmosphere. The effect of the S/M ratio in slag on the slag-refractory interaction was also investigated by performing melting of mixtures with different initial S/M ratios of 1.75, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 (wt/wt) in MgO crucibles at 1500°C for 120 mins under an argon atmosphere. After the melting process, each sample was quenched in water, mounted in resin, ground, polished, and coated. The interaction between the slags and MgO refractory was then evaluated by analysing the polished samples using a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Thermodynamic simulations using FactSage™ 8.0 thermochemical software were performed based on the experimental slag compositions, refractory, and conditions to support the evaluation process. The results show that a higher S/M ratio in slag leads to a higher tendency for the refractory component to dissolve into the slag. A higher S/M ratio in slag also leads to an increasing extent of solid-state diffusion of iron oxide into the remaining refractory grains. The dissolution of MgO into the slag is rapid; the MgO concentration in the final slag increased by 2.4 wt per cent and 5.7 wt per cent at initial S/M ratios of 2.0 and 3.0 wt/wt, respectively, within 5 and 30 mins of the melting process.

"In South Africa most of the large gold mines operate between 1500m and 4500m below surface where reef is accessed initially through a vertical shaft system then via a network of tunnels and mined in either a longwall, sequential grid or scattered mining configuration. Due to the complexity of the ventilation networks used to ventilate these mines and the potential disastrous consequences associated with underground fires, it is of utmost importance that these mines are managed in such a way that underground fires are prevented. However, if they do occur the fires are managed to firstly prevent the loss of life and secondly protect the infrastructure and viability of the mine. The aim of this paper will be to: • Discuss current SA mining legislation regarding underground fire prevention and control. • Examine these fires from a risk management perspective by means of a bowtie assessment. • List and discuss the major Threats and Consequences as determined by the bowtie assessment. • Discuss the various prevention and consequence controls for deep level underground fires. • Examine how to effectively run an emergency control room. From this, a practical way of designing, implementing and managing an underground fire management system is explored. Lastly, the paper identifies new technology and ways of thinking and how these can be used to combat underground fires. INTRODUCTION The orebodies of South African gold mines are generally narrow tabular structures that vary in thickness between 0.8m and 1.2m with an inclination of between 200 and 700. This, coupled with depths of between 1500m and 4500m, as well as the unpredictable geology, creates unique challenges and significantly impacts on mine designs and mining methods. In general, gold bearing reefs are accessed initially through a vertical shaft system then via a network of tunnels and mined in either a longwall, sequential grid or scattered mining configuration (Figure 1). Mining is very labour intensive with very limited mechanisation opportunities and this increases the risk to human life if an underground fire occurs. On 16 September 1986, one of the worst mining disasters in SA mining history took place when 177 mineworkers were killed at Kinross Mine. An acetylene tank sparked flames that swept through the mining tunnel igniting plastic covering on the wiring and the flames also set fire to polyurethane foam. The burning plastic combined with polyurethane and the toxic fumes that filled the shafts caused the miners death. This incident was a stark reminder of the serious consequence that underground fires can have on human life as well as the crippling financial and asset impact for the mining companies. Over the past thirty years, the SA mining industry reduced the number of mine fires significantly by replacing normal timber support with fire retardant treated timber, alternative support systems such as backfill and elongate support and many other fire prevention initiatives. Although the number of fire incidents and number of fatalities due to fires does not show a direct correlation because of various factors, the controls put in place against fires has had an impact on the number of fire and explosion fatalities (Figure 2)."
