"INTRODUCTION The Gibellini manganese—zinc-nickel deposits, are in southeastern Eureka County, Nev, T. 15 N., R. 53 E. M.D.B.M. 27.5 miles south of Eureka, the county seat.The partly explored deposits, locally known as the Black Iron or Gibellini property, were examined in May 1944 by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, who recommended that the deposits be explored further by means of core drilling. The proposed program called for drilling six diamond—drill holes, or eight if necessary, and for trenching at two places — 200 feet northeast and 280 feet west of the shaft on the main deposit.In 1946 the project was set up, and In July, of that year diamond drilling as started. Six holes were drilled for a total length of 1,198.5 feet. No trenching or other exploratory work as done. Work on the project was stooped. October 30, 1946.OWNERSHIPAccording to county records, the property comprises a group of 13 unpatented lode claims, and ownership is divided among Louis P. Gibellini,Louis P. Gibellini and wife (both of Eureka, Nev.), and the International Smelting & Refining Co., of Salt Lake City, Utah. Five claims of the group - the Black Iron No. 1, Black Hill No. 2, Manganese No. 3, Flat No. 1, and Flat No. 2 - are owned by Gibellini. Three claims - the Black Hill No. 1, Black Iron No. 3, and Manganese No. 4 are owned jointly by Mr. and Mrs. Gibellini, and the International Smelting & Refining Co. owns the remaining five - the Black Iron No. 4 and No. 5, and Black Hill Nos. 4, 7, and. 9."

Whereas many researchers and mine engineers have conducted tests on cable bolts using various grouts, water: cement ratios, and physical modifications of the cable to determine the load-carrying characteristics ofa bolt, few studies have been conducted on cable bolts fitted with internal instruments. Those studies that have been done have concentrated on cable response averaged over significant (6.1 m) cable lengths. Researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health in Spokane, WA, are investigating the physical properties of cable bolts by replacing the conventional king wire with a modified king wire on which strain gauges have been installed. A numerical analysis was performed to match laboratory results. Loads calculated by the model were then compared to loads measured in the laboratory on 1.83-m-long cables grouted into two 0.91-m-long pull-tube assemblies. Load along the cable was monitored with 20 strain gauges installed along the length of the cable. This paper documents test results on these modified cable bolts. The instrumented cable bolt provided reproducible point measurements of cable load as opposed to load measurements averaged over long cable lengths. Such point measurements can assist in interpreting the influence of cable confinement, grout quality, rock mass stiffness, and other factors. The instrumented cable bolt is a practical field and research tool because it can predict point loading along the cable. The instrument has been successfully field tested at FMC's Granger Mine, Granger, WY; the Meikle Mine, Carlin, NV; the Stillwater Mine, Nye, MT; and the Getchell Mine, Golconda, NV. By monitoring load and displacement of the rock mass using these instrumented bolts, more-effective ground support can be selected and installed, which will lead to safer working conditions for miners.

The Konkola Mine, a subsidiary of the Konkola Copper Mines Plc (KCM) which is owned by the Vedanta group of companies of India and Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Holding limited, is located at Chililabombwe in the northern extension of Zambia's Copperbelt province. In its operations, the mine has been experiencing problems in ascertaining the optimum degree of fineness and the operating density of the hydrocyclone overflow in order to achieve high flotation performance. It was believed that recovery of sulphide copper minerals from Konkola ore is a function of the fineness of the grind so that it might be an economical justification to modify the grinding plant in order to run at lower cyclone overflow densities than the case is now. In an effort to improve these operations, it was decided to carry out test work on various hydrocyclones of sizes 0.381 m, 0.4575 m and on 0.508 m. The later was found to give satisfactory results and was installed on the plant. Despite giving satisfactory results there was need to investigate further to establish the working densities and size. Increasing the density of cyclone overflow decreases the per cent passing 75 pm at least in the range 1080-1 150 g/l. Furthermore, hydrocyclones give better separation at low densities of feed and hence the efficiency is high at low feed densities. Circulating load increases with an increase in feed densities and an decrease in the grind. The flotation performance in both sulphide and oxide copper minerals rougher stages is enhanced with an increase in the degree of fineness of the grind, with an optimum being obtained at a density of 1 150 g/l and 81.4% passing 75 µm. "The research goal was to assess if analytical tool/s can be developed to quantify displacements around a geological fault as longwall face moves toward it and past it. A company was faced with crossing a 2-3 m (6-10 ft.) normal up-thrown fault in the development entries and the face while mining a 375 m (1,200 ft.) wide longwall face. A field monitoring and numerical modeling study was performed to develop data. Field measurements consisted of roof-to-floor convergence and rectangular rosettes in the immediate roof. Numerical modeling consisted of constructing a 3-D structural model using the FLAC3D software with the fault plane incorporated as ubiquitous joint. Based on analyses and field observations data, the coal company was informed of impending movements along the fault plane and likely impacts on the development entries. Additional stiff supports were installed in head gate entries around the stage loader and equipment about 60 m (200 ft.) outby of the longwall face (solid). As the longwall face approached the fault, predicted displacements were documented and manifested by severe loading on the installed supports.BACKGROUND AND STUDY OVERVIEWThis paper summarizes results of a cooperative study aimed at improving longwall mining operations in Illinois. More specifically, the study focused on: 1) In-mine measurements in development entries while mining ahead of and behind a faulted zone, 2) Making observations on stability of pillars and entries while mining through the fault, and 3) Developing simplified analytical structural models using FLAC3D to assess if predictive techniques can be developed to plan mining operations through fault zone. Available data on geometry of the fault with estimates of the cohesion and frictional parameters were used for modeling."

To accommodate the fast growing need for services in Singapore’s Marina Bay downtown area, Marina South, the construction of a common services tunnel (CST) was required. The CST includes various services such as telecom cables, power lines and water pipes. A deep excavation and temporary earth retaining system (TERS) was required to facilitate the construction of the tunnels. Marina Bay is reclaimed land over thick soft marine clay which is likely to be still consolidating. The deep soft marine clay poses a big challenge for deep excavations in downtown areas where highways and sensitive structures are close by. This paper presents a case study of part of the CST Phase 1B and 2 at Marina South, in particular a 26 m deep excavation supported by a 46 m diameter temporary caisson. The construction started in late 2006 and the basic structure was completed in early 2011. The caisson was formed by 1.0 m thick overlapping diaphragm wall panels with a capping beam and three ring beams at different depths. Two-dimensional finite element analyses were conducted to predict the ground settlement, lateral displacement, bending moment and hoop stresses in the diaphragm wall and ring beams during different excavation stages. A comprehensive instrumentation and monitoring scheme was established to verify the design predictions, control excavation safety and trigger the contingency plan to protect public safety. The impact of construction activity, unbalanced temporary stockpiles and adjacent deep excavation for a mole removal will be discussed.CITATION:Zhang, H and Lawrence, A, 2014. Selective extraction through leaching of an amorphous slag obtained from a base metal smelter plant in Botswana is investigated in this paper, where the main objective is to optimise the experimental variables that would result in the maximum selective extraction of the three base metals (Ni, Cu and Co) from the slag waste. Mineralogical tests showed that the sample is composed mainly of fayalite (Fe2SiO4), with a total entrapped metal sulphides content of about 1.0 wt.% occurring as fine occlusions in the fayalite phase. In our experimental program, we compare the effectiveness of two common leaching techniques. In the first method, we use sulphuric acid to carry out atmospheric beaker leaching tests, and in the second method we use high pressure oxidative leaching. The effects of acid concentration, oxidant addition/oxygen partial pressure and pulp density on metal dissolution rate are examined. The optimal Ni, Cu, Co extractions of 80.5%, 81.9 and 98% respectively were obtained under high pressure oxidative leaching conditions (150 oC, 0.6 M H2SO4, 0.5 MPa O2), with substantially low dissolved Fe of 9.6%, the majority of which was removed as jarosite in the residue. Atmospheric beaker leaching yielded poor extractions of Ni below 40% when sulphuric acid combined with hydrogen peroxide (1.0 M and 0.6 M respectively, 65 oC) were used for leaching, while Fe, Cu and Co dissolutions were each about 80%. Therefore, using high pressure oxidative leaching provides a possibility to effectively extract Ni, Cu and Co while producing an environmentally benign residue, thus alleviating the current adverse environmental issues associated with the abandoned smelter slag. "Abstract — Concentrations of tailpipe pollutants from diesel-powered. underground mine vehicles change over time due to engine wear and the need for maintenance. Since this deterioration in pollutant emissions may adversely affect the air quality in an underground mine, it should be monitored and controlled. This paper presents decision criteria concerning when to service a mine vehicle diesel engine. These criteria, based on mine air and tailpipe concentration measurements, are designed to maintain the tailpipe concentrations within limits that assure satisfactory mine air quality.Application of the deterioration criteria to mine vehicle emissions involves:establishing, for each pollutant, the allowable deterioration factor, anddetermining the deterioration factor, from the mine air and tailpipe diesel pollutant measurements, and the mine air threshold limit values (TLVs).If the deterioration factor is greater than or equal to the allowable deterioration factor the vehicle is removed from service for maintenance.An analysis applying the criteria to measurements made in an underground coal mine is presented. The tailpipe pollutant concentration data were collected using the Emissions Mea-surement Apparatus (EMA) developed by Michigan Techno-logical University. Since the TLV for diesel particulate matter (DPM) has not yet been established assumed mine air DPMTLVs of 15 and 1.0 mg/m3 were used in the analysis. For all of the diesel haulage vehicles included in the analysis. DPM was found to be the critical pollutant (the one most in need of control). For an assumed mine air DPM TLV of 15 mg/m3 none of the diesel haulage vehicles would he removed from service. However reducing the DPM TLV to 1.0 mg/m3 would make it necessary to remove two of the three vehicles tested from service."

"High performance Sm2Fe17N3 magnet powder is developed nitriding Sm2Fe17 alloy that 'is made using a reduction and diffusion method. Typical remanence, coercivity and maximum energy product of the fine powder are 1.40 T, 1.13 T and 323 kJ/m3, respectively. Decreasing samarium content, oxygen content and the amount of a-Fe are found to be the important factors to realize high-energy product.High performance injection molded Sm2Fe17N3 anisotropic magnet is also developed using the powder and an original binder system developed in order to mold at low temperature. Typical remanence, coercivity and maximum energy product obtained are 0.77 T, 0.78 T and 103 kJ/m3, respectively in the density of 4.77 Mg/m3The temperature coefficient of remanence is -0.07 %/K and that of coercivity is -0.54.%/K. The initial irreversible flux loss of the magnet that has a permeance of two is -5 % at 100 °C and the irreversible .flux loss of it is -4.4 % exposing it at 80 °C for 1000h.IntroductionSm2Fe17N3 alloy powder is expected to be very useful for a bonded magnet. The reasons are as follows. The magnetization is as large as the Nd2Fe14B alloy. Curie temperature is even higher than the alloy. The uni-axial anisotropy is comparatively higher than the alloy. Consequently it is possible to obtain high coercivity after just milling the powder and therefore possible to obtain high-energy product in a bonded magnet as it is realized in the SmCo5 bonded magnet. On the other hand, sintering is difficult because it will be decomposed into samarium nitride and a-Fe when heating it up to 500°C:"

Maximization of water recovery in thickeners is an essential step in the mineral processing industries. The Gol-E-Gohar iorn ore processing plant uses a center pier thickener with a diameter of 38 m and depth of 4 m. The feed rate is 50 t/h solids with a concentration of 5% (w/w), and it has been designed to provide an underflow containing 50% solids. The performance of the thickener was not as expected judged by the overflow stream containing 0.6% solids and water loss of 52 m3/h in the underflow. A criterion called the index of flocculation incorporating the perimeter-based fractal dimension of flocs, floc size, and settling velocities was proposed and used to determine the optimum flocculant dosage which was found to be 20 g/t. The fractal dimension of flocs in a pulp containing 5% solids was found to be between 1.16 (no flocculant) and 1.56 (40 g/t flocculant) which indicated highly branched and loosely bound structures for the flocs as flocculant dosage increased. At these conditions, the size of the flocs which was recorded by a digital microscope increased from 93 µm to 403 µm. A new feedwell with a special design with the aim of preventing flocs breakage and maximizing energy dissipation of pulp was constructed and installed. These modifications led to an increase in the thickener drivehead torque from 5% to 18% of the rated torque, indicating a higher bed depth. Finally, installation of a PID controller reduced the drivehead torque relative oscillation from 52.0% to 12.7%. These changes increased the solids concentration of the underflow from 49.0% to 56.9%, decreased the overflow solids concentration from 0.6 % to values smaller than 0.01% and resulted in a reduction of 27% in water loss in the thickener underflow.

"As part of Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery (RBMR) expansion, a new Nickel Electrowinning Tank House, with a nameplate capacity of 32 400 tons per annum, was constructed. Commissioning of the new electrowinning technology, which involved world first full deposit plating, commenced in 2011.The old nickel electrowinning process at the RBMR used starter sheets which, along with a divided cell configuration, was very labour intensive and exposed operators to high levels of aerosols that contained both nickel and acid. To overcome this problem two key design intents of the new technology are aerosol abatement and minimising labour in the electrowinning cell environment, with a design target to reduce the nickel occupational exposure limit (OEL) to half the legislated limit of 0.1 mg.m-3.Commissioning of the new technologies adopted to achieve mist abatement is described, together with a review of technical and operational challenges relating to the titanium blank edge strips, blank roughness and sandblasting optimisation, blank quality control, electrode spacing, polyconcrete cell dimensional stability and cell top furniture. The impact of these on process performance is presented and the development of fault checking and rectification methods, to maintain high process performance, is explained.INTRODUCTIONThe expansion of Anglo American Platinum’s Rustenburg Base Metals Refinery necessitated the construction of a new Nickel Tank House to achieve two primary objectives, namely increasing the nickel electrowinning capacity from 22 500 tons per annum (tpa) to 32 400 tpa nickel, and a design to reduce the nickel aerosols to 0.05 mg.m-3 as a time weighted average over 8 hours, which is half of the legislated occupational exposure limit (OEL) of 0.1 mg.m-3."

Upon recently, most offshore foundations were based on a number of driven piles that were installed with an impact hammer. With the increase in offshore windfarms two major developments have occurred: the shift from jackets to monopiles, leading to increase of the diameter of the foundation piles, and a shift from impact hammers to vibro hammers. As the use of vibratory hammers is becoming more and more common practice, the need for accurate vibro-driving simulation software has increased, which requires that the soil modelling is enhanced to address soil fatigue during pile driving and to predict reliably the soil behavior and resistance during pile driving. In addition pile driving monitoring, which is routine for piles driven with an impact hammer, needs to become common practice. This paper addresses advances in soil modelling that allows more accurate pile driving simulation as well as the application of Vibro Driving Analysis (VDA) or Monitoring (VDM) to validate the simulation results. This is illustrated by a case study of the test pile for the Delft Offshore Turbine project, a 28 m long monopile with a diameter of 4 m that was driven 15 m into dense sand layers using a vibro hammer. After some 6 months the pile was extracted, and pile driving simulations and VDA were done both for the installation and extraction phase. 1. INTRODUCTION At the end of 2017, the total worldwide offshore wind power capacity was 18.8 GW [1]. The vast majority of offshore wind farms are currently in Northern Europe, which together account for over two thirds of the total offshore wind power installed worldwide, followed by East Asia, while developments in North America are still in very early stages.

"The Lorraine property is located in the northern Intermontane Belt, north-central British Columbia. The property is underlain by intrusive rocks of the Duckling Creek Syenite Complex, an Early Jurassic, alkaline phase of the Late Triassic-Early Cretaceous Hogem Batholith. Two significant zones of copper-gold mineralization have been explored to date; the Main zone (historical Upper and Lower deposits) and the recently discovered Extension zone. A combined geological resource was estimated in 1975 for the Main zone deposits at 10 million tonnes averaging 0.7% Cu, and from 0.1 g/t Au to 0.34 g/t Au. The Extension zone, still at an exploration stage, is estimated to be considerably smaller than the Main zone.Copper-gold mineralization at Lorraine Mountain exhibits characteristics suggestive of both magmatic and hydrothermal origins, and may be related to orthomagmatic-hydrothermal fluid flow contemporaneous with magmatism and development of migmatitic fabrics. A depth greater than the depth of formation of classical porphyries may explain many of the variations displayed by mineralization at Lorraine. These characteristics distinguish Lorraine from other members of the alkalic suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Canadian Cordillera.IntroductionThe Lorraine prospect is located in the Omineca Mountains, at the headwaters of Duckling Creek, 56 km northwest of Germansen Landing (Fig. 1). The property is centred at latitude 55°55'N, longitude l25°26'W on NTS mapsheet 93N/14W. The area is typified by mountains of moderate relief, with elevations ranging from 1150 m in the valleys to peaks of 2000 m. Valleys are U-shaped and blanketed by glacial till which give way to steep, talus covered slopes and sharp ridges. Outcrop is generally limited to elevations above 1600 m (Fig. 2)."

The paper describes the 209 in. single stage axial flow mine ventilating fan which commenced operation at The Zinc Corporation Limited, Broken'Hill, N.S.W., in January, 1954.This fan is used to ,ventilate the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited and, at the time of installation it was the largest fan of its type in the world. It has amaximum capacity of 900,000 c.f.m. at 4·2 in. watergauge and is equipped with adjustable pitch blades and a novel form of variable speed drive.The considerations which lead to the adoption of this particular design are outlined, and a full description of the contruction and installation of the fan and auxiliaries is given.Comprehensive acceptance tests were carried out on the completed installation and, the testing procedure is described in detail. The results of sound level measurements are also included. A brief report on the performance during the 12 month period from 1st July, 1954, to 30th June, 1955, is then given.SELECTION AND DESIGN OF FANGeneral ConsiderationsBecause of the economic advantages of joint ventilation of the underground workings of The Zinc Corporation Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, it was decided, after a full review of the future ventilating requirements of both mines, to sink a 20 ft. diameter circular upcast airway on the common boundary of the two properties, to handle a maximum quantity of 900,000 c.f.m.The anticipated air requirements were at this stage estimated to be:(a) initially 700,000 c.f.m. through a mine equivalent orifice of 160 to 2'40 sq. ft. "The Cityringen project foresees the construction of a new circular metro line in and around the city center of Copenhagen. Both drives, the north and the south one, required the TBMs to be equipped in order to cope with contaminated water table and soil. The north drive mined in water contaminated with chlorinated compounds, including chloroform and vinyl chloride, while the south TBMs excavated in a highly benzene contaminated area, becoming the first TBMs to complete such a challenge. Despite the pollution and the stricter operative procedures, the production has been extremely successful with record up to 520 m in one month and 32 m in one day. 1 INTRODUCTION The Cityringen is an extension of the existing metro line. The 15 km long twin tunnels will form a new circular line with 21 new stations (17 + 4 crossovers). When finished it will interchange with the existing metro, rail and bus infrastructure at key locations around town, taking 90% of Copenhagen citizen at less the 600m from a metro station (Figure 1). The Contract has been awarded in April 2011 to the Copenhagen Metro Team (CMT), a joint venture between the Italian companies Salini Impregilo, Tecnimont and Seli SpA. Tunnels are being excavated with 4 Seli-Kawasaki EPB TBMs, two of which manufactured in Denmark by Seli Tunneling Denmark ApS, which is also operating them. At the moment this article is written 50% of the tunnels have been completed and over 40% handed over for the electromechanical works. Seli Tunnelling Denmark is a Danish company constituted in 2012 as a subsidiary of Seli SpA for this project and subsequently acquired by the Salini Impregilo Group in 2015."

"PT Freeport Indonesia is preparing the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine to be the successor of the currently operating Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine. The DMLZ is block cave mine situated 500 m below the DOZ mine and approximately 1600 m depth from surface. Both of the block caving mines require draw point construction in the extraction level to extract the ore from caved area above. Learning from the experience in DOZ, the construction & maintenance of draw points in the production panels is a significant challenge in supporting consistent production.The average DOZ draw point construction duration is approximately 46 shifts per draw point. The time frame for construction is dependent on several variables; availability of the conventional forming system, material availability, and development tolerances. The repair of concrete floors and lintel sets causes production downtime. Reviewing the old DOZ draw point design, there is an opportunity to increase constructability, durability, and reliability of DMLZ draw points. This paper discusses how the DMLZ has improved draw point construction productivity and is on track to significantly reduce costs whilst increasing the quality by using the Six Sigma Improvement Method.Introduction The DMLZ Mine is part of the PT. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) future Expansion to its underground mining complexes. It is the fourth vertical lift in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) deposit (Figure 1).Currently, it is under development phase.The DMLZ mine will be a block cave mine using an advanced undercutting method. The DMLZ extraction level will be approximately 1,600 meters below the surface on the 2570 level with column heights of roughly 500 m. The Undercut is on 2590 level, some 20 meters above the extraction level."

INTRODUCTION The $1.1 billion Bajo la Alumbrera Project, started up in 1997 by Minera Alumbrera Limited in the Catamarca Province of Northwestern Argentina, is the first large scale modern mining project to be developed in Argentina. Like many modern Andean mining projects, existing infrastructure was not available to economically transport the 875,000 tonnes of product per year. A variety of alternatives were investigated, including upgrading of existing roads and railroads, slurry pipelines, and combinations of these systems. The final system selected was to combine a 312 km slurry pipeline with an 820 km rail haul to a ship loading facility near Rosario. The concentrate pipeline crosses divergent terrain between the minesite at 2400 m elevation and the filter plant at 400 m elevation. The system selected represented the lowest net present cost alternative by a significant margin. BACKGROUND The Bajo Alumbrera deposit was discovered in 1947 by Professor Cetioni from the University of Tucuman. It is a large (>750 million tonnes) medium-grade (0.6%) copper deposit with high gold values (0.5 g/t*). The deposit outcrops, making it very suitable to modern, large scale, open pit mining techniques using 218 t trucks and 43 m3 shovels. Advances in gravity concentration of the gold helped to demonstrate the feasibility of the project in a study prepared by Fluor Daniel for Minera Alumbrera in 1994. The initial concentrator is the largest green-field concentrator ever constructed, rated at 85,000 t/d. The presence of iron in base metal leach solutions complicates nickel and copper recovery processes. Leach solutions are commonly purified by precipitating iron as hematite, jarosite or goethite. Fast oxidation of ferrous to ferric is an important step to remove iron by precipitation at low pH values. This study reviews the ferrous oxidation mechanism and reaction rates in chloride media using molecular oxygen. This work contributes to the development of a better understanding of iron precipitation processing steps, which continues to be an important matter in hydrometallurgy. The specific objectives were to investigate (1) the effect of key process variables (acid concentration, copper concentration, and temperature) on the rate and extent of ferrous oxidation by dissolved oxygen and (2) the oxidation mechanism by varying chloride and hydrogen ion concentrations separately. Batch oxidation tests were performed using synthetic chloride solutions containing 45 g/L Fe and 3 g/L Ni at 50 and 80°C, dissolved Cu concentrations (0.3 to 3 g/L) and HCl concentrations (2 to 4.6 M). Regression analysis indicated that the significance of the effect of different variables on the extent of oxidation achieved after five hours decreased in the following order: HCl concentration > Cu concentration > temperature. Increasing the HCl concentration from 4 M to 4.6 M caused the degree of oxidation achieved after two hours to increase from 58.3% to 98.1%. The catalytic effect of dissolved copper on ferrous oxidation was more significant at low acid concentrations. Experimental data suggest that rapid oxidation of ferrous is possible at high HCl concentrations for two main reasons. First, the formation of ferrous chloride complexes allows ferrous oxidation to proceed without the formation of superoxide as an intermediate product (the rate limiting step in dilute acid solutions). Second, the formation of ferric chloride complexes stabilises the oxidation product.

"The Piedmont Manganese Belt extends from Taliferro County, Georgia, 70 miles in a northeasterly direction through Greenwood County, South Carolina, and conforms with the trend of the Piedmont Province. The total area of the belt is reported to be about 1,000 square miles, and the maximum-width is about 24 miles.Manganese has been known to exist in the belt since 1845. M. Tuomey mentioned a deposit in the Edgefield district on Hard Labor Creek in South Carolina in a report on the geology of South Carolina published in 1848.Ore was first mined about the time of the first World War, when the Colley mine, near Lincolnton, Ga., was. Opened. The only operation in the area at present is that of the Abernathy & Kehaya Mining Co., at McCormick, S. C.The geographical position of the belt is from west longitude 82° 57’, north latitude 33° 39' to west longitude 82° 06', north latitude 34° 08'. The towns of Washington and Lincolnton, Ga., and McCormick and Greenwood, S. C., are in or near the belt.An exploratory project of the Bureau of Mines was started on the McCormick, S. C., deposit in April 1944, and trenching, test pitting, and hand-auger drilling-were done on a small scale until early in October 1944. (Fig. 1.) In November 1944 work was begun on a property 12 miles north of McCormick, known as Parsons Mountain, which is leased to M. H. McKnight by the United States Forest Service. From March 15 to March 24, 1945, work was done on the property of Mrs. H. B. Ross, which is known as the Morgan farm.The Abernathy & Kehaya manganese mine contains what is locally known as the Dorn gold mine; mineral rights on the property were owned by M. G. & J. J. Dorn, Inc."

Rössing Uranium Mine operates a recovery circuit with continuous ion exchange followed by solvent extraction. Serious organic degradation problems were encountered during 1985/6, 2000 and 2005 in the solvent extraction plant. The preferential loss of the tertiary amine extractant was observed during the above-mentioned period. Previous investigations revealed that the tertiary amine was breaking down to nitrosamine, which cannot take part in the exchange reaction with U3O8. A reduction in the redox potential of the solvent extraction plant feed to below 500 mV halted this preferential loss. A lot of effort has been made to try and understand the actual mechanism for nitrosamine formation. Current understanding for the degradation is that formation is due to high nitrates on the strip side of the circuit emanating from nitrates from the precipitation process using ammonia. It is the current belief that pH lower than 3.7 on the strip side results in loading of nitrates onto the solvent. If oxidizing conditions prevail on the extraction side of the solvent extraction circuit, the tertiary alamine will then degrade into nitrosamine. This phenomenon is yet to be established and verified. It has, however, been established that the above process is brought about the following conditions ?High redox potential greater than 550 mV predominately caused by a high Fe3+/Fe2+ratio (4:1) ?Perception that if Fe2+<0.5 g/lit will contribute to high redox ?High concentrations of NO-3 in the conc eluate (feed to SX)/ammonium sulphate (NO-3> 4 g/l based on historic values) ?Presence of Mo as a catalyst ?Tests also have proved that the presence of nitrous acid in a concentration of 1 g/lat 550 mV leads to formation of nitrosamines from alamine.

The McArthur River (HYC) deposit, located in the Northern Territory of Australia, was discovered by Mt Isa Mines Limited geologists in 1955. It is one of the largest sedimentary stratiform zinc-lead-silver deposits known. Previous attempts to exploit the deposit have been thwarted by its geographical location, the capital expenditure required to establish an operation and the fine-grained nature of the mineralisation. The steeply dipping western margin of the deposit is covered by up to 25 m of overburden, and lies beneath the McArthur River and its flood plain. Dips are eastward, with the eastern edge of the deposit at a depth of about 400 m below the surface. The average thickness of the deposit is 55 m, and it covers an area of about 1.8 by 1.3 km. Seven stratiform orebodies are interbedded with sedimentary breccia, tuff and poorly mineralised siltstone. Mineralisation consists of finely intergrown sphalerite and galena, hosted by pyritic siltstone of the middle Proterozoic McArthur Group. Selective underground mining of the lower orebodies will extract more than one million tonnes of ore per annum. The dip of the mineralisation demands that mining will be by way of apparent dip room and pillar. Declines will provide access and haulage, and wherever possible development will be in ore. Initially, haulage will be by trackless diesel powered trucks, but these will be replaced by a conveyer system. A single zinc-lead-silver concentrate will be produced from a simple flowsheet. This flowsheet has been developed in the laboratory and demonstrated during an extensive pilot plant campaign. A single stage SAG mill will be utilised to grind the ore down to a P80 = 45 ltm (80 per cent of particles passing 45 ¦rn.
