A heap-leach field test was conducted during the 1993-1994 winter season at Carmacks, Yukon Territory, Canada. The purpose of the test was to demonstrate the viability of heap leaching Carmacks oxide copper ore in an arctic setting on a year-round basis. The test itself utilized a 5-m-diam crib loaded with 250 t of composite ore from the Carmacks copper deposit. The ore was stacked to a total height of 7 m in the crib, including 1 m of ore as an over- layer above the emitter system. This matched the plan for the commercial heap at the time when the test was started. The design also replicated an interior segment of the commercial heap. Leaching was done at a flow rate of 0.2 L/min/m2 using leachate at 21 °C. This temperature was maintained with no external heat input other than normal process heat transferred from electrowinning to the leachate via solvent extraction. Winter conditions were quite typical of those expected at the mine site. The temperature reached -54°C, while averaging -13°C over a three-month period. In spite of some flow system problems, leaching continued unabated, and freezing was limited to the insulating ore over-layer and isolated points near the outer crib walls. Thus, the test demonstrated that year-round heap leaching of Carmacks copper ore is practical in an arctic setting.

Laboratory tests were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the respirable dust reduction effectiveness of and interaction between face airflow and water sprays for a continuous miner. Exhausting face ventilation was varied from 3,000 to 9,000 cfm (1.42 to 4.25 m3/sec). Spray-water-flow was varied from 15 to 35 gpm (0.057 to 0.132 m3/min), while nozzle operating pressure was varied from 80 to 200 psi (5.62 to 14.06 kg/cm2). Results from gravimetric dust samples indicated that airflow had the greatest individual impact on reducing dust levels, with return and operator concentrations reduced by as much as 57% and 99%, respectively. Interactions between dust control parameters were found to be significant. Often, these interactions defined a level of application for a control parameter where further increases in that parameter failed to produce additional reductions in dust concentrations. In several cases, increases in a control parameter resulted in higher dust levels at the operator's location. These higher dust levels were attributed to additional rollback and/or airflow turbulence. Regression modeling indicated that increases in airflow to 8,400 cfm (3.96 m3/sec), water flow to 25 gpm (0.095 m3/min), and water pressure to 140 psi (9.84 kg/cm2) typically were beneficial at the operator and return sampling locations.

INTRODUCTION Development work at Carr Fork Mine of Anaconda Copper Company in Tooele, Utah commenced in August 1974. A decision to install an underground gyratory crusher for primary crushing run-of-mine ore and waste was made in 1976. Higher throughput rates, larger reduction ratios and greater flexibility in terms of meeting immediate and expanded production needs were the main reasons for selecting the gyratory crusher over the jaw crusher. UNDERGROUND MATERIALS HANDLING Underground crushing and conveying system was designed for a capacity of 16,300 mtpd of ore and waste on a 2-shift, 5-day week basis. Engineering and design of crusher complex was performed by Anaconda engineers at Carr Fork. Figure 1 represents the longitudinal section of mine showing the general materials handling system. Mine area is trackless except for materials and production haulage which is run on rail track on both 1200 and 970 levels. Ore from stopes and waste rock from development headings are handled by 3.8 cu m (5 cu yd) Jarco scoops and dumped into 2.4 m (8 ft) diameter ore and waste passes at the 1200 level. The material gravitates down to the 970 level where it is loaded into 12 cu m (420 cu ft) ASEA mine cars using side loading chutes. Explosives used for blasting operations in civil engineering works, like construction of piping systems under roads, of pools, of houses and buildings can generate large volumes of carbon monoxide (CO). Carbon monoxide can represent between 1 to 3% of the gases produced by usual explosives. The production of 10 to 24 1 of CO by kg of explosives blasted is theoretically anticipated. CO is a gas that has no characteristic colour, smell or taste. It can migrate in the fractured rock of the blasted areas on fair distances, and then infiltrate in closed spaces like sewage systems, manholes, but also in basements of houses. In Quebec, in the last 10 years, 7 people were poisoned by CO in their houses to the point that they had to be treated in hyperbaric chambers. In the USA, many accidents have occurred and one worker died in a manhole. From the review of intoxication cases, the distance of migration of CO may reach 55 m if a conduit is present underground. Underground conduits broken by blast, tilling around underground conduits in road or house trenches, or fractured rock created by blasts between houses or between a house and a road, are the different pathways identified in the Quebec incidents. Field tests were performed at sites close to CO intoxication locations in order to evaluate the behaviour of CO in fractured rock following blasting operations. From these tests, the following conclusions may be drawn. The structural geology of the rock formation (schistosity, family of joints, fractures) plays a role in the direction and extent of gas migration in fractures generated when rock is blasted with explosives. The confinement of the rock can affect the quantity of gas migrating in the fractured rock. Significant concentrations of CO may persist in the fractured rock even 7 days after a blast. Advection is the initial mechanism of CO migration in fractured rock generated by the blasts or naturally occurring before the blast. The distance of migration with this mechanism is short (5 to 8 m). In trenches of muck (equivalent to tills under roads) the distance of CO migration by advection is 12 to 20 m. In the 2 to 3 days following the blasts, further CO migration up to 15 m is made by diffusion in the induced fractures, or up to 30 m in the trenches. To minimise CO production and migration in the fractured rock during blasting, special procedures can be applied by the blasting contractors: (1) do the complete excavation of the overburden before drilling and put mats for each blast; (2) do the complete excavation of the muck after each blast; (3) the last blasting should be the one for the private services entrance of the house and the excavation of the muck should begin at the junction between the road trench and the services entrance trench. Another technique consists in the pumping of interstitial air in the muck with a vacuum truck immediately after each blast.

SYNOPSIS The feasibility of rejection of nitrogen from stack gas by recycling of top-gas with cold-blast 95 to 98 per cent oxygen is assessed. It is concluded that nitrogen could be removed to a level below 3 per cent of the stack-gas using recycled cleaned cold top-gas and 95 to 98 per cent oxygen produced by a single-column air separation plant with liquid-air reflux instead of liquid nigroten reflux. The partial pressure of carbon monoxide in the stack-gas could be doubled without top pressure and the deposition of carbon and reduction of iron oxides by the stack gas could be markedly increased. It is concluded that rate of stock descent could be doubled compared with present-day practice and an iron make of 4400 kg/m 2 of hearth area/hour may be attainable with a working volume of 129 m2/m hearth diameter by this method. Oxygen consumption is estimated at possibly 280 m2 (0.4 t)/t iron made and carbon consumption at possibly 280 kg/t iron. Power consumption for oxygen including auxiliaries is estimated at 304 kWH/t 100 per cent oxygen as 95 to 98 per cent gas. The air separation cycle due to Schuftan is discussed in some detail, and the components of a 1 600 metric ton/day separation plant are briefly discussed. The paper is a theoretical essay.

From a vast army of workers to gargantuan machines to immense volumes of material being moved, almost everything about the Port of Miami Tunnel (POMT) project points to tunneling on a massive scale. Almost.The star of this underground and underwater show is a Herrenknecht tunnel boring machine (TBM,) nicknamed ?Harriet? by a local Girl Scout troop. With her 12.9-m- (42.3-ft-) diameter cutting head and a total length of 139 m (457 ft), Harriet is boring through thousands of cubic meters of clay, dirt and sand, which is often mixed with coral and other materials, to create two 1,280-m (4,200-ft) traf?c tunnels connecting Watson Island and the Port of Miami (Dodge Island) beneath Biscayne Bay, FL. But in the midst of all of the oversized equipment and machines, a strong contender for the best supporting nod goes to a relatively tiny machine: the Brokk 400. Bouygues Civil Works Florida crews are using the compact, remote-controlled and electric-powered machine to excavate five cross passages between the twin traffic tunnels. The pas-sages will be essential to the safety of people who drive their vehicles under the bay every day.

The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.

Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)1 and engineers from Placer Dome, Inc.2, conducted an underground rockfill span test at the Turquoise Ridge Mine near Golconda, Nevada, USA with the purpose of improving safety and increasing productivity by using a bulk mining method instead of drift and fill. A rockfill sill was constructed by mining and backfilling six adjacent, parallel drifts and then undercutting the sill with a 13.7 m (45 ft) wide and 30.5 m (100 ft) long room. Displacement measurements from vertical borehole extensometers installed in the mine roof and rockfill indicated that the sill remained stable with a maximum vertical deformation of less than 5 mm (0.2 in). These results were confirmed by visual observations and calculations from a validated three-dimensional numeric model of the sill. The numeric model was also used to simulate load on the sill produced by dislodged roof material in the shape of a 11.0 m- (36 ft-) high triangular prism with base measurements equal to those of the sill. Failure in the bottom third of the sill occurred with this additional load.

The principal mineral commodity in the Orleans Mountain RARE II area (No. 35019) is gold. Gravel deposits along the Salmon River contain placer gold. Lode gold with associated silver is contained in quartz veins. Many placer mining claims have been located within the study area in the Salmon River district. Four placer patents totalling 230 acres were issued for claims on the Salmon River between Lewis Creek and Forks of Salmon. On this same reach of river, adjoining and overlapping the study area boundary, approximately 3.3 million cu yd (2.5 million cu m) of gold bearing gravel with values ranging from $0.51 to nearly $5 per cu yd (50.66 to $6.50 per cu m) (gold valued at $400 per troy oz), are contained in three placers, the Bloomer, Pot Luck, and Horn (table 1). Within the study area boundary there are approximately 950,000 cu yd (726,000 cu m) of gold bearing gravel in these three placers. These three mines yielded nearly 12,000 oz (373,000 g) of gold and more than 300 oz (25,000 g) of silver between 1872 and 1913.

Assam cancer care foundation (ACCF) proposed the construction of hospitals and related facilities across 18 locations in the state of Assam-India. Tezpur is one among the 18 locations of Assam with high seismic risk. The strata at the site are comprised of mostly fine silty sands of lower SPT- N values. The water table is also encountered and ranging from 1 m to 2 m below EGL. Since the site lies in seismic zone V as per IS 1893, detailed liquefaction analysis is carried out for all five boreholes and indicates that soil is liquefiable and ground improvement is inevitable up to a depth of 15 m below existing ground level. To mitigate the liquefaction potential and enhance the seismic performance of the soil, ground improvement using stone columns by Wet top feed Vibro-replacement method is proposed. Also, the differential settlements can be avoided effectively under the raft foundation with Vibro Stone Columns. In this paper, field test validation results such as Pre and post-SPTs and ECPTs to access the extent of ground improvement, along with other information adopted in this project presented.

"The article describes an emergency rehabilitation intervention executed at Buyo Dam, in Ivory Coast, to intercept a significant water seepage occurring through the foundation of this zoned earthfill retaining structure constructed in the late Seventies. To solve the problem, a 800 mm thick, 400 m long impervious cut-off wall (COW) was constructed on the right side of the embankment, operating from the dam crest and with the reservoir almost at its maximum level. The use of an innovative pre-mixed self-hardening grout, with a target hydraulic conductivity coefficient (k) lower than 10-9 m/s, was considered the only way to match the tight working schedule and the strict requirements for the filling material of the COW.Presentation of the Hydroelectric Scheme of BuyoThe hydroelectric scheme of Buyo, located at 6°14’28” N 7°20’45 W on the Sassandra River, in Ivory Coast (Figure 1), was built in the late Seventies for agriculture and power generation. With a reservoir of 8.3 billion m3 and an installed power capacity of 165 MW, enough to supply electricity to 111,000 homes, it represents an installation of great significance for this West African country."

Metal Mines Limited (Bancroft Division) was incorporated m 1964 to take over the assets of Faraday Uranium Mines Ltd., including their uranium deposit near Bancroft. Ontario. This paper outlines the geology of the Bancroft area, and. then go on to describe the principle rock types m the mine workings, especially the pegmatite, which is the host rock for the uranium mineralization. The structure and mineralogy of the orebodies are thoroughly covered, and, after a summary of the production and ore re-serve figures, the paper concludes with suggestions for further exploration work. Location and History M ETAL Mines Limited, Bancroft Division, is located in Faraday township, Hastings county, Ontario. The main production shaft and concentrator are about: Y2 mile north of Highway 28 and about 5 miles west of the village of Bancroft (Figure 1). The presence of radioactive minerals in the Ban-croft-Wilberforce area has been known since the early 1920's. Uraninite was found at the Richardson deposit near Wilberforce in 1922, and some attempts were made to produce radium from the deposits of the area between 1929 and 1931.

The failure of yield pillar-based gate mad designs to provide adequate ground control performance is primarily related to the use of "critically" sized chain pillars. A "critical" pillar is one that falls into a range of pillar sizes that are too large to either yield nonviolently or yield before the roof and floor sustain permanent damage, but are too small to support full longwall abutment loads. To directly compare the in-mine performance of critical and yielding pillar designs, the U.S. Bureau of Mines recently completed a field study in a tapering gate road at the Sunnyside No. 1 Mine, Sunnyside, UT. Extreme pillar stresses and associated coal bumps characterize the response to first panel mining of a 16.8-m-wide critical design. Significantly lower pillar stresses, early yielding of the pillar and adjacent panel rib, and an absence of coal bumps suggest that a narrower 12.2-m-wide design more closely approaches proper yield pillar dimensions. Probehole drilling of several 10.6-m-wide pillars revealed low stress levels and substantial pillar and panel rib yielding prior to abutment onset. suggesting a properly functioning yield pillar design.

Bauxite Resources Limited is grade drilling in its Western Australian Darling Range tenements to firm up resource definition and to develop mine plans. The Darling Range bauxite is generally in shallow deposits with minimum overburden. In the northern tenements, the ore is characterised by a higher silica layer which may extend from 0.5 to 1.5 m below, which high grade bauxite is found to a depth of four to 7 m. When grade drilling samples are taken, every 0.5 m and the recovered sample is weighed, logged and bagged. To eliminate splitting errors, the whole sample over the short interval is pulverised. Twinning holes variations are observed when using various drill rigs. Diamond core has been shown to give close to 100 per cent recovery and grades have been verified by digging bulk samples. As such, diamond core is used as the reference. It is intended to include sonic drilling as an alternative to diamond cores. This presentation details and attempts to explain the reasons for the observed variations in the various drilling methods used by Bauxite Resources Limited. High methane liberation and mining depth were two major factors which prompted the development of a high- capacity face ventilation system at Jim Walter Re- sources, Inc., No. 4 Mine. No. 4 Mine, one of four deep shaft mines presently under development, is located approximately 50 miles southwest of Birmingham, near Brookwood, Alabama (Figure 1). The coal seams under development are located in the Warrior Coal Field and include both the Blue Creek and Mary Lee Seams, Depth of cover averages 2000 ft. (610 m) with an average total mining height of 8 ft. C2.4 m). [ ] It is generally accepted that the methane content of a particular coal increases as the overburden depth is increased [l] ; experience to date has shown that the gas condition of the No. 4 Mine is no exception to the rule. To further compound the problem, the over- burden depth, coupled with the relatively soft nature of the Blue Creek coal, has resulted in an initial layout based upon 150 x 150 ft (45.7 x 45.7 m) centers. Considering the above-mentioned mining conditions, the means and the effectiveness of the face ventilation system becomes paramount where productivity is concerned.

The presence of coal in the Sydney area was confirmed in 1891 when Cremorne Bore No. I intersected cindered coal at 1 854 m. The decision to develop Sydney Harbour Colliery was based on the results of Cremorne Bore No. 2 (drilled in 1892) in which a 3.12 m. seam of unaltered coal was encountered at 889 m. Geologists from the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources consider that this seam is probably equivalent to an upper split of the Bulli seam. Long Cove at Balmain was selected by Sydney Harbour Collieries Ltd. as the site for mine development in 1896. This was due to opposition to the proposed establishment of a colliery on the north shore of Port Jackson near Cremorne. Construction of the main access and ventilation shafts (termed Birth- day and Jubilee), other mine infrastructure and the quay wall occurred between 1897 and 1902. A fatal accident in which five men were killed occurred during the construction of the Birthday Shaft in 1900. This acci- dent resulted in amendments to the Mining Act providing for guide rails in shafts.

In this paper, a comparative performance evaluation of geostatistical, spectral, and fractal methods is made for short-scale variability prediction. The algorithms compared are: sequential Gaussian simulation method; a random fractal algorithm based on the generalised stochastic subdivision method; and a spectral simulation approach adopted for direct multi-dimensional simulation. The data for this study have been obtained from a mined out coal property. As this property was being mined, a 7315 m by 7315 m (24000 ft by 24000 ft) coal block was extensively sampled at an approximate spacing of 107 m (350 ft) and the 60-ton samples were analysed for sulphur in the 1.50 float gravity fraction. This data set is used here with the three methods to generate the simulated realisations, which are analysed for semivariogram reproduction and for simulation errors. Although all three methods converge to the true semivariogram in an average sense, the coefficient of variation of the average semivariogram for the Fourier integral method is minimum. The realisations generated by the sequential Gaussian method have minimum mean simulation error. The choice of a simulation method based on variability reproduction and simulation errors remains difficult.

Zinc sulphide concentrate from Mount lsa, Australia, was leached in acidic sulphate-chloride solutions using ferric ions as oxidants under atmospheric pressure. The parameters of temperature, particle size and concentrations of ferric and chloride ions were evaluated.The shrinking core model can be used to describe the leaching which is limited by the electrochemical processes in the initial leaching stage, and by both surface reaction and pore diffusion processes subsequently. The apparent activation energy measured in the initial leaching stage is 49 kJ/mole over the temperature range 60 to 90°C.About 99 per cent of the contained zinc in the -45+38 µm particle sample dissolved at 90°C in a 0.5 M H2SO4/0.1 M Fe2(SO4)3/0.8 M NaCI solution within two hours. Some nine per cent of sulphide sulphur was oxidised through to sulphate; the remainder was convened to elemental sulphur.The mixed sulphate-chloride system has advantages over separate chloride and sulphate systems due to the low reagent cost, high leaching rate and possible selective leaching of zinc sulphide concentrate with high lead contents.
