"By compiling geological, structural, geophysical, and geochemical information into a 3D geological model, we evaluated the orogenic gold potential in the vicinity of a hidden segment of an important Archean fault zone, the Cadillac-Larder Lake fault (CLLF) in the region of Rouyn-Noranda. The segment of CLLF in the present study is partly covered by Proterozoic sedimentary rocks. Because more than 2000 t Au have been extracted along the CLLF to date, our objective is to evaluate the gold potential at depth along a poorly known segment of this fault. A 3D geological model (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) including the covered segment was built through the compilation and homogenization of available geological data and the construction of 23 cross sections. The geology under the Proterozoic cover was evaluated using geophysical inversions, drill holes (42 in total), and surrounding geology. All available assays were filtered and upscaled to a 250 m × 250 m × 250 m regular cell grid to determine and quantify spatial relationships between geological features and mineralized occurrences using the weights of evidence method. Structural features, such as E-W-trending faults and fault intersections, and certain lithologies with a high primary porosity such as volcanoclastic rocks of the Blake River Group and Timiskaming sedimentary rocks, proved to be very prospective, yielding favourable factors with a weight of evidence index W+ > 0.24. These salient features were then assigned a combination index for ultimately evaluating the orogenic gold potential under the sedimentary cover. The zones resulting in an optimization of exploration targeting were attributed the highest probability, representing ~1% of the initial volume. La compilation des données géologiques, géophysiques, structurales, et géochimiques et leur intégration au sein d’un modèle géologique 3D a permis d’évaluer le potentiel aurifère dans les environs d’une importante zone de faille archéenne sous couverture protérozoïque. Cette méthodologie a été développée en utilisant le cas de la Faille Cadillac-Larder Lake (FCLL) dans la région de Rouyn-Noranda. Puisque plus de 2000 t d’Or ont été extrait à proximité de la FCLL, l’objectifs des travaux est l’évaluation du potentiel aurifère en profondeur de ce segment. Un modèle géologique 3D (50 km × 9 km × 1.5 km) incluant le segment sous couverture de la FCLL a été construit en utilisant l’ensemble des données géologiques disponibles et 23 coupes géologiques. La géologie du socle archéen sous la couverture protérozoïque a été interprétée avec des inversions géophysiques, des forages (42 au total) et les contacts géologiques exposés. Les teneurs aurifères dans le secteur ont été filtrées et ajusté à une grille régulière de 250 m × 250 m × 250 m afin d’évaluer et de quantifier les relations spatiales existantes entre certaines entités géologiques et les emplacements minéralisés en utilisant la méthode du poids de la preuve. Les failles de direction Est-Ouest, les intersections de failles ainsi que certaines lithologies possédant une porosité primaire importantes comme les certains tuf du Groupe de Blake River et les sédiments du Timiskaming se sont montrés très prospectifs avec des valeurs de W+ > 0.24. Ces entités géologiques ont ensuite été utilisées par le biais d’un indice de combinaison pour évaluer le potentiel en or de type orogénique sous le couvert sédimentaire. Cette méthodologie permet une optimisation des campagnes d’exploration puisque les zones pour lesquelles la probabilité de minéralisations a été évaluée à la plus haute valeur représentent 1% du volume initial."

"IntroductionSince the establishment of the star,just concentration of 2 mg/m3, a strong effort has made by mining engineers and researchers to provide better dust control equipment and procedures for underground coal mines.Particular areas of success have been implementation of better coal-cutting strategy to control dust generation, better design of water sprays for dust suppression and air movement, use of scrubbers, and improved design of face ventilation systems. A drastic improvement occurred over time such that the average dust concentrations for continuous miner operators dropped from 6.5 mg/m3 in 1968 to 1.3 mg/m3 in 1980 and for auger, cutter, longwall, and roof bolter occupations from 2.7 mg/m3 in 1973 to 1.6 mg/m3 in 1980 (Niewiadomski, 1983).While dust concentrations in mining sections have been dropping considerably, one problem area has been mining sections where quartz is a considerable portion of the airborne dust. The federal regulations require that quartz content must be held below 0.1 mg/m3 in the air regardless of the concentration of the total dust. This legislation limits the allowable dust concentration to a ""reduced standard"" of 10/ (% quartz) when the quartz content of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere is more than 5%. Today, approximately one-third of underground coal mining operations have designated areas with more stringent dust standards in place, and many mines experience considerable difficulty in meeting these standards (Jankowski, and Babbitt, 1989).It is well known that metal miners subjected to respirable dusts high in quartz have a higher incidence of silicosis than those exposed to dust low in quartz. However, the role of quartz in the development of coal workers' pneumoconiosis is still a highly controversial question, in spite of the large number of research projects devoted to this subject over the last 20 years. Because coal seams contain less quartz than metal ores and quartz often comes from sources outside the coal seam (e.g., roof and floor), it is difficult to relate studies that deal with the quartz content in coal seams and the incidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Hamilton, Ogden, and Vincent (1983) have provided a plausible explanation for the incidence of the disease by hypothesizing that the quartz content does not affect the probability of developing pneumoconiosis until some threshold value (generally thought to be about 10%) is exceeded.The objective of the research studies summarized here was to obtain a better understanding of quartz occurrences in airborne coal mine dust by studying the variations of the quartz levels in different dust sizes and the relationship between the quartz content in airborne coal mine dust and the quartz content in the mined material. The implications of the results to control of dust in high-quartz sections will also be discussed."

The Climax Molybdenum Company' s newest operation is the Henderson project, which is located on the east side of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are estimated at more than 300 million tons at a grade of 0.49% MoS2. For mining the ore a modified panel caving system is used. The ore is transported to the Henderson mill on the west side of the Continental Divide on a 42 in. (1.07 m) gauge railroad through 9.6 miles (15.4 km) of tunnel and 4. 8 miles (7.7 km) of surface track, a total distance of 14.4 miles (23. 2 km). Each train consists of 30 ore cars with capacity of 22 st (20 mt) of ore or 660 st (599 mt) per train. The unmanned trains operate completely automatically. At the 54 in. by 84 in. primary gyratory crusher, the bottom dump ore cars pass over a dump scroll to discharge at a maximum rate of 100 st (91 mt) per minute. Dumped ore falls onto a rock box before passing over a 17 ft long by 46 ft wide (5. 2 m by 14 m) grizzly set at a 40° angle with bar spacings of 7 ½ and 8 ½ in. (191 mm and 216 mm) openings. An estimated 30 to 50% of the ore (which at times is wet and sticky) passes through the grizzly. The operators report that a shallower angle on the grizzly, perhaps 35º to 37º, would have been sufficient and would have prevented impact on the back of the crusher pocket by large boulders. This pocket as well as the crushed ore pocket under the crusher is lined with AR plate. The accompanying drawings show a "future splitter" and the operators are planning the installation of this unit to prevent impact and subsequent damage to the crusher spider. Crushed ore at an 8 to 9 in. (203 mm to 229 mm) size joins the grizzly undersize in the pocket beneath the crusher. This pocket is sized at 660 live st (599 mt) so that it will accept an entire trainload of ore. Crushed ore is removed from the pocket by a four-speed, 84 in. (2. 1 m) apron feeder operating at 9.6 to 29. 3 fpm (2.9 to 8.9 mpm). A 60 in. (1.5 m) takeaway conveyor operating at 480 fpm (146 mpm) delivers the crushed ore to a 58,000 st live and 193,000 st total (52,600 and 175, 100 mt) open stockpile under an A -frame supported tripper gallery. Impact idlers on the takeaway conveyor under the apron feeder discharge are mounted on wood blocks for a cushioning effect and ripped belt detecting bars are located behind each impact idler. The conveyor tunnel is of corrugated and galvanized steel construction rather than concrete. The concrete crusher enclosure is circular in design from its lowest level at elevation minus 110 ft 4 in. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Henderson mine utilizes a highly mechanized, continuous panel-caving system to extract ore from a deep, massive, molybdenum deposit. The mine site, lo¬cated 80.5 km (50 miles) west of Denver, is situated at 3170 m (10,400 ft) above sea level in a steep valley on the eastern side of the Continental Divide. The mill site, located on the western side of the divide, is linked to the mine via a 15.5-km (9.6-mile) railroad tunnel. Mine production is scheduled to reach 27 215 t/ d (30,000 stpd) from the uppermost production level. This pro¬duction rate will have been reached within the four years following an intensive ten-year preproduction development program. A second production level, due to come on stream in later years, will expand production capabilities to 31 751 t/d (35,000 stpd). The mine, which employs approximately 2000, has blocked-out ore reserves of 220 Mt (242 million st) at an average grade of 0.42% MoS2. Geology The Henderson deposit is composed of two partially overlapping ore bodies that lie 1080 m (3600 ft) beneath the peak of Red Mountain. The ore bodies are entirely within a Tertiary rhyolite porphyry intrusive complex that has intruded Precambrian granite. The de¬posit is elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 670 x 910 m (2200 x 3000 ft). In section it is arcuate with an average thickness of 185 m (600 ft). The top of the deposit is at an elevation of 2610 m (8700 ft) while the lower limits range from 2340 m (7800 ft) on the west to below 2100 m (7000 ft) on the east. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore bodies and consists of molybdenite and quartz in random to subrandom, intersecting, closely spaced veinlets. Cavability RQD (rock quality designation) * values measured from Henderson drill core and compared with the RQD values from the Climax and Urad block-cave mines in¬dicated that the Henderson ore would cave but with difficulty and that a high percentage of the cave ma¬terial would be blocky. Initial caving experience shows the Henderson ore caves easier and with greater frag¬mentation than was indicated by the RQD values. Pos¬sible reasons for this are: 1) The greater lithostatic load at the Henderson has a greater effect on caving and fragmentation than anticipated. 2) The relief of confining pressure due to caving action and brittleness of the rock is enhancing breakage. Mine Layout The Henderson mine layout was designed from its inception for a large-scale, rubber-tired, continuous panel-caving mining system. The ore body is vertically divided into three major mine levels (Fig. 1). The top¬most level (8100 level), which is 2469 m (8100 ft) above sea level, is the current mine production level. "The Dez River flows from the Zagros Mountains into the great Khuzestan plain, Southwest of Iran. The 203 m high Dez Dam is a double curvature thin concrete arch dam, with a Pulvino, founded on thick bedded to massive conglomerate of Bakhtiary Formation, mainly horizontal and very less jointed at the dam site. Construction work was completed in 1963, creating a reservoir with a total storage volume of 3’315 million m3. The dam body, with some 350’000 m3 volume and (W/H=1.1/1.0), is the dominant feature of the project.Geological and geotechnical studies at the dam site started in 1957 and continued during the whole period of dam construction. Simultaneously, two extensive programs of laboratory testing were carried out in New York and Milan.Most of the results were recorded in the project design documents and in two very well-known papers of Talobre et. al. (1964) and Dodds (1966), however, no detail results are available for most of tests.In order to estimate geomechanical parameters of the rock mass foundation for numerical modeling of the dam body and its foundation, reassessment of the in-situ and laboratory test results using the recent rock mechanics methods was required.This paper explains how the outcomes of those tests, performed more than 50 years ago, were reevaluated and how the definitions and parameters presented in the project reports were re-interpreted using the recent rock mechanics concepts and definitions. Also, the results of classification of Bakhtiary conglomerate using GSI system and application of Hoek & Brown failure criterion for estimating rock mass parameters have been described.INTRODUCTIONThe Dez River flows from its headwaters in the Zagros Mountains into the great Khuzestan plain. Just before entering the plane, the river passes through a narrow, steep gorge that is about 17 km long. The Dez Dam is located at the entrance to this gorge, some25-km upstream of the city of Dezful and 150-km upstream from the provincial capital Ahwaz (Figure 1)."

"We report that two different micropolystyrene round beads linked to either luminol or lucigenin have been developed. The 1-µ.m-diameter beads arc useful reagents that allow one to perform chemiluminescent (light producing) phagoeytic reactions without opsonization. It is known that luminol reacts with peroxidases (e.g., myeloperoxidase) while lucigenin reacts mainly with superoxide anion. Luminol and lucigenin beads produce cellular chemiluminescence (CL) with neutrophils, macrophages, monocytes, and differentiated human promyelocytic leukemic cells (HL60). When myeloperoxidase (MPO) is present luminol beads evoke higher CL from neutrophils, but when little or no MPO is present, lucigenin beads produce higher amounts of light. Lucigenin beads appear to be active inside these cells where unbound lucigenin does not enter freely.INTRODUCTIONA variety of cells, e.g., neutrophils (Ns) and macrophages (Ms), can engulf foreign particles (1). This engulfing or phagocytic activity is used by the body to kill bacteria and to eliminate foreign particles such as respirable dusts, e.g., coal, silica, or cotton. The neutrophil engulfs or phagocytizes bacteria which are coated with plasma antibodies and/or complement proteins (Fig. 1). The coating or opsonization allows the neutrophil to recognize foreign substances. Usually the absence of opsonization prevents the cell's recognition of a foreign particle and the particle is not phagocytized. Macrophages, particularly the alveolar Oung) cells, do not require opsonization for phagocytosis. Ms should not be selective toward individual dusts because they serve a major role in eliminating a variety of these.Particle size can also be a factor. Usually a particle with a diameter of 0.5-5 µ.m is considered in the respirable range. Larger particles are trapped before they reach the alveoli Oung spaces where oxygen exchange with blood occurs), ·and smaller particles do not generally settle, and are not engulfed by macrophages (2). Tabato and Ikada (3) found that maximal phagocytosis of microspheres takes place when their diameter is in the range of 1.0 to 2.0 µ.m. In addition, they found that beads with hydrophobic surfaces were more readily phagocytized than hydrophilic surfaces."

This paper investigated the ability of eight common hydrodynamic models – tanks in series (TIS); three compartmental model configurations (Comp-1, Comp-2 and Comp-3); advection dispersion (AD); piston exchange (PE); piston exchange-diffusion variant (PE-D) and piston dispersion exchange (PDE) – to simulate residence time distribution (RTD) data generated from tracer tests conducted on a packed bed composed of different size fractions of malachite ore. The chosen materials were packed into 0.1 m internal diameter columns to a depth of 0.155 m and drip irrigated at 5.11 L/ m2.h. The four size fractions tested were: 1 – 2 mm, 2 – 2.8 mm, 4.75 – 5.6 mm and 13.6 – 16 mm. Step-up tracer tests were conducted using potassium chloride. The results showed that an increase in the particle size of the malachite ore had little effect on overall bed porosity but resulted in significantly lower values of liquid holdup. Two of the monoporosity models tested, TIS and Comp-2, were the most affected by the changes in bed size fraction due to their inherent inability to cope with high degrees of non-ideal flow present in the larger particle systems. The dual porosity models performed relatively better with the dominant trend being a reduction in dynamic to total liquid holdup as particle size increased. Of all the models tested, the PDE and TIS models were the best and worst performers respectively, with R2 values averaging at 0.997 and 0.679 across all experiments respectively. Though the Comp-1, Comp-3 and PE-D models also performed well, the addition of the dispersion coefficient to take the axial spread of fluid molecules into account added a layer of complexity that allowed the PDE model to perform relatively better than the other dual porosity models. "The Blue Star subdistrict in the Carlin Trend, Nevada, includes multiple mines with 33.9 t Au in reserve and past production totaling 89 .1 t Au. The deposits are characterized by zoned alteration mineralogy and gold grades. From orebody centers outward the zones include: 1) a silicified core with erratic gold grade; 2) adjacent mill-grade (> 1.37 Au git) intense quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration; 3) enveloping leach-grade (0.21 Au g/t to 1.37 Au git) weaker sericite-kaolinite-quartzpyrite alteration; 4) surrounding decarbonatized and intensely argillized waste and leach grade ore; 5) pervasively decarbonatized waste rock; and 6) peripheral waste with weak decarbonatization and local propylitic alteration. Zoned alteration extends as much as 1500 m beyond orebodies.Understanding Blue Star subdistrict zoned alteration assemblages and gold grades has increased geologists' ability to provide practical and economically significant information to geotechnical engineers, mine planners and drill and blast personnel. Alteration influences geotechnical pitslope design because each assemblage has distinct rock strength. Geotechnical engineers use three-dimensional models of incompetent alteration types as a foundation for pit-slope design. In the drill and blast cycle, hard and soft alteration types require modified practices (powder column, blast hole spacing, delay design etc.) for optimum blast energy distribution. Further, geotechnically instable alteration types require careful blast procedures to prevent backbreak whic~ damages ultimate walls. In addition to mine planning and mining applications, zoned alteration assemblages extending beyond orebodies provide a useful exploration guide. Metallurgical character also varies with alteration type. Intensely quartz-sericite-pyrite altered or silicified ore has relatively high partical-size dependency and poor leach recoveries. Moderately sericite-kaolinite-quartz-pyrite altered rock, in contrast, shows little size dependency and good leach recoveries.The author sincerely thanks L. Schutz, P. Williams, C. Clode, W. "Waste dump development at the Fording River Operation s in British Columbia began in 1971. In 1981, several unique as well as unplanned situations provided an opportunity to study water flows through waste dumps.The key to the drainage is naturally segregated rock sizes .created by end dumping from the crest of a pile. The largest size material accumulates at the toe. Flow rates along the base of the studied dumps varied from 2,800 to 13,500 m3/day or 0.032 to 0. 156 m3/s (1.2-5.5 cfs}. Sediment concentrations in the water ranged from 1 to 1,800 mg/I.This paper describes water flows through dumps of varied lithology and maturity. The results suggest that neither long-term water flow nor contained sediments in small streams are jeopardized when crossed by end-dumped fills.IntroductionThe Fording River Operations are located in southeastern British Columbia approximately 115 km north of the United State s and 10 km west of Alberta, within the medial range of the Rocky Mountains. All production is carried out at elevations ranging between 1,600 and 2,200 m above sea level.The property is within a continental climatic zone, with temperature extremes of - 40°C in January to +35°C in July. The average annual precipitation of 335 mm of rainfall and 390 cm of snowfall feeds the numerous seasonal, small drainage courses along the Fording River valley.Since start-up in 1971, 149 million bank cubic met res of waste from truck-shovel and dragline mining have been placed in numerous dumps or ""spoils"". The dumps were developed to the point that several unique situations could be studied. During the peak run-off period of May-June 1981, water flow studies were performed on dumps of varied lithology and maturity. This paper describes the results of the study."

Lightweight aggregates are classified as those minerals, natural rock materials, rock-like products, and byproducts of manufacturing processes that are used as bulk fillers in lightweight structural concrete, concrete building blocks, precast structural units, road surfacing materials, plaster aggregates, and insulating fill. Other uses include architectural wall covers, suspended ceilings, soil conditioners, and other agricultural uses (Mason, 1989). One unusual agricultural use recently reported was for bedding on a crocodile farm on the south coast of Natal. It seems that female crocodiles became upset because there was no vermiculite in which to lay their eggs due to the late arrival of a consignment of vermiculite. The vermiculite was being used as a substitute for river sand to nest crocodile eggs (Griffiths, 1989). The various lightweight aggregate materials may be classified into four groups as follows: 1. Natural Lightweight Aggregate Materials-prepared by crushing and sizing natural rock materials, such as pumice, scoria, tuff, breccia, and volcanic cinders. 2. Manufactured Structural Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by pyroprocessing shale, clay, or slate in rotary kilns or on traveling grate sintering machines. 3. Byproduct Lightweight Aggregates-prepared by crushing and sizing foamed and granulated slag, cinders, and coke breeze. This group of lightweight materials, with the exception of slag, has become less significant and will not be discussed in this chapter. Other lightweight aggregates are beginning to appear in the marketplace. Some are the result of manufacturing processes on industrial byproducts and/or waste products, such as fly ash and incinerator residue (Bigner, 1992). 4. Manufactured Insulating Ultralightweight Aggregates-pre- pared by pyroprocessing ground vermiculite, perlite, and diatomite. The application of diatomite in brick and in extruded and aggregate forms has declined in recent years (Kadey, 1983) and will not be considered in this chapter. Lightweight aggregates for structural concrete and concrete masonry units, according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (1986) consist of "aggregates of low density used to produce lightweight concrete, including: pumice, scoria, volcanic cinders, tuff and diatomite; expanded shale, clay, slate, perlite, vermiculite or slag; and end products of coal or coal combustion" (Mason, 1989). Lightweight aggregates are distinguished from other mineral aggregate materials by their lighter unit weights-1 281 to 1 602 kg/m3 or less for loosely packed lightweight aggregates-as com- pared to 2 002 kg/m3 or more for crushed stone, sand, gravel, air-cooled slag, and other common mineral aggregates. The specific gravities of these lightweight aggregates are also used to classify them for use in concrete; they range from the extremely light materials, used for insulative and non-structural concrete to expanded shale, clay, slate, and slags used for structural concrete. Vermiculite and perlite are sometimes referred to as super light- weights. Insulating concrete (non-load bearing) weighing as little as 240 kg/m3 can be made with these aggregates. Natural aggregates such as pumice, pumicite, and scoria are normally made into concrete weighing about 400 to 480 kg/m3. Expanded shale, clay, and slate produced in a rotary kiln make structural concrete ranging from 1 201 to 1 842 kg/m3. Expanded shale and clay produced by sintering make concrete that ranges from 1 442 to 1 922 kg/m3. Air-cooled slag produces concrete ranging from 2 162 to 2 403 kg/m3. The low density lightweight aggregates are used primarily for insulating purposes. They have relatively low compressive strength. The middle density aggregates are used for insulation and for fill. Those at the upper end develop excellent compressive strength and are used in many structural applications (Anon., 1971). In recent years, the production of lightweight aggregates in the United States for all uses (including insulation and construction materials) has averaged about 19 Mtpy (Table 1). The production and consumption of lightweight aggregate is closely tied to the fortunes of the construction industry and the need to construct energy efficient buildings. Recent years have seen the production of lightweight aggregate approach the levels of the early 1970s. The period of 1979 to 1981 was a low point in production levels. The low levels of production were caused by significantly higher plant energy costs due to the large amounts of fuel and energy used in the production of most types of lightweight aggregate. Lower levels of construction activity also affect production levels. This chapter focuses on the use of natural lightweight aggregates and manufactured insulating ultralightweight aggregates, and on both the production and use of manufactured structural light- weight aggregates. Some additional comments are made on byproduct materials. Separate commodity chapters on vermiculite, perlite, pumice, and volcanic cinders are elsewhere in the volume. Discussion of the commodities covered elsewhere in the book will be limited to observations on their utilization and relation to other lightweight aggregate materials.

Controlling worker dust exposure on longwall mining systems is difficult because the working face area serves as an immediate return during the mining cycle and the amount of airborne dust generated is directly related to production. Since improvements in longwall mining technology have significantly boosted production levels, additional technology is needed to control the airborne respirable dust generated at present and future production levels. One concept to reduce longwall worker's dust exposure is to maintain two splits of air at the face -- a clean intake split in the workers walkway, and a return (dusty) split over the face conveyor. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently investigated a concept to overcome the visibility handicap of face partitions by utilizing a permeable polyester mesh. The mesh material was anticipated to provide adequate air-splitting capabilities as long as the pressure differential between the face and worker walkway was minimal. Initial testing of this concept at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory showed that notable reductions could be achieved with a 1/8 in (3.18 mm) and 1/16 in (1.59 mm) mesh opening size. Dust reductions at 100 ft (30.5 m) and 200 ft (61.0 m) downstream of source were 58 and 36 pct, respectively, for the 1/8 in mesh and 79 and 55 pct, respectively for the 1/16 in mesh. Longwall application of the 1/8 in mesh showed similar results to the Lake Lynn Laboratory tests. A flame retardant mesh was used underground with portable lighting mounted on the shearing machine for face side lighting.

Results obtained from small scale tests using Australian tin concentrates indicate that metallic tin containing less than 0·1 per cent iron can be recovered by a two-stage process using hydrogen and make-up chlorine. In the first stage the concentrate is ground,. pelletized, roasted, and reacted at 650°C with HCI and H2 to volatilize the tin as SnOI2. The volatilization reaction is conducted with cocurrent gas and solids flow because it was found that the use of cocurrent flow yielded a solids residue substantially free from FeCI2. The second stage uses a technique termed "reflux reduction" during which the SnOl2 produced by volatilization is reduced by hydrogen to form tin and a gas containing HCI and H2 of sufficiently high HCI tenor for recycle to the volatilization stage. The elimination of tin ranged from 98+ to 99·7+ per cent of the tin from concentrates containing 5 to 50 per cent tin, respectively. The process should be capable of continuous operation, and a tentative calculation has shown ,that a treatment rate of 12,000 tonnes of tin concentrate per year could be obtained in a volatilization reactor 1·1 m in diameter and 6·1 m high. The process may have particular application to finely divided concentrates containing less than 20 per cent tin.

Process water from production of concentrates in Meydook copper sulfide mine is transferred to the 8.3 million m3 tailings dam and a water retention pond after initial thickening. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals, sulfate, and TDS and decrease in pH as well as seepage into the aquifers have been the concern of the regulatory agencies since the start of activities. In this paper the results of a 6-month monitoring program from 4 wells are presented. The wells were located approximately 1.5 km from downstream of tailing dam (0.4 km from water retention pond) as well as upstream background well (2.28 km from water retention pond and 1.27 km from tailings dam). The objective was to study possible effect of accumulated tailings on the groundwater resources. Water levels in sampled wells were on average between 20 and 40 m. Results showed high levels of lead (5 ppb), copper (0.17-0.46 ppm) and selenium (73.1- 29.1 ppb). High levels of selenium and lead were partly due to natural geological settings of the area with high levels present in unaffected soils in the vicinity including water wells of villages upstream of mining operations. High copper levels were attributed to both mining operations as well as deposition from particulate air deposition onto the soil and transport to ground water by rain.

There is a strong focus in the mining industry to limit its impact on water quality and usage. This is even more evident in developing countries, where mining companies operate within local communities and have to be diligent not to affect them negatively. In mineral processing operations, the vast majority of water reclamation occurs at the tailings thickener area and tailings storage dam. It is often more effective to maximise water recovery at the tailings thickener before material transport to the tailings dam. Tailing dams are relatively inefficient, and experience a high degree of water loss due to evaporation, seepage and water retention. In addition, tailings dams present the biggest environmental liability for mineral resource projects, so it is beneficial to limit their size and loading.In the past, it was common for tailings thickener areas to have a significant footprint with several large diameter conventional thickeners, producing underflows of between 45-55% solids (w/w). At times, these multiple thickeners were difficult to operate, leading to inefficiencies in water recovery and quality. The development of High-Rate Thickeners (HRT) has resulted in improved settling properties and HRTs usually operate at significantly higher solids loadings (= 1.2 t/m2.h) when compared to conventional thickeners (= 0.1 t/m2.h). Subsequently, thickener diameters have reduced in size and HRT technology has become the preferred option for thickener circuit design in both new and existing operations. HRTs also produce higher water recoveries with increased underflow densities = 55% solids (w/w).The Carmen Copper Corporation (“Carmen Copper”) circuit upgrade is a recent example of these HRT benefits, where one, 39 m diameter, Outotec HRT treats the solids flow rate of five 76 m diameter conventional thickeners. This has allowed operations to increase dry plant tonnage by 50%, maintain key performance targets and provide a framework for further plant expansion. "AbstractThe construction of a distribution centre of minerals for a global mining and resources cooperation demanded the control of deformations and displacement of the stack reclaimer facilities on very inhomogeneous subsoil conditions. The variation of quality from soft clay with CPT values below 1 MPa up to rock formations were the challenge in design and execution of all the foundation works.The advanced design considerations were resulting in a barrier wall system to limit the deformations of the up to 40 m deep bored pile of the stacker-reclaimers, whereas the layout of the barrier wall and the stiffness of the elements had a major impact on the residual lateral forces to be absorbed by the bearing structure.IntroductionA large international raw material distribution organisation is currently building an iron ore and pellet distribution centre on the north-western coast of Malaysia. The distribution centre will handle around 90 MTPA (million tons per annum) of iron ore and includes accompanying plants for loading and unloading iron ore and pellets, pelletizing plants as well as corresponding storage space for these raw materials. The total storage space extends about 800m north to south respectively 1400m east to west and is about 200m from the coastline. The project area is located in a wide valley basin, bounded by a range of hills to the north. The existence of soil with low bearing capability in the area designated for the plant meant that measurements for ground improvement were required in the storage areas, in order to combine the needs of iron ore and pellet storage areas with requirements of the loading facilities as the overall project demand.Project LayoutThe iron ore distribution centre and the pelletizing facility both consist of an import/export jetty, material handling facilities, pellet plant and the associated infrastructure. This publication describes the execution of ground improvement and foundation works for the loading and storage system, which consists of five rows of stockpiles and four intermediate rows of stacker-reclaimers. The total area of these systems comprises 278,881 m2 (Fig. 1)."

"The authors conducted the in-situ gas-tightness tests in a fractured rock at the Namikata underground LPG storage site in Ehime prefecture, Japan. The test consisted of two independent setups, a gas-tightness test that used boreholes, and a chamber-scale test that used a horizontal drift sealed with a concrete plug. In each test, the gas pressure was increased up to the onset of the measurable gas flow to obtain the maximum containment pressure. This paper discusses the hydraulic conditions for gas leakage initiation and the importance of the pore pressure measurement for monitoring the gas-tightness of the LPG storage cavern based on the test results.INTRODUCTIONJapanese first underground LPG storage plant was constructed by JOGMEC, the Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation, at Namikata in Ehime prefecture in granitic rocks (Kato et al., 2007). The “hydraulic sealing principle” (Åberg, 1977) that utilizes groundwater flow into an unlined cavern to prevent the leakage of gas through fractures in the surrounding rock mass was employed for storage of LPG. This paper describes the results of the in-situ tests performed at the Namikata Site to obtain information on fundamental gas-tightness characteristics of fractured rock. Two types of in-situ tests, a borehole gas-tightness test and a chamber gas-tightness test, were carried out near the storage caverns. Figure 1 shows the cavern layout of the Namikata underground storage plant and the test locations. The storage facilities consist of three caverns (W26m×H30m×L485m). The cavern crown lies at a depth of 150m below the sea level in Cretaceous granitic rock (Figure 1). Water curtain boreholes excavated from the water gallery tunnel at EL-125m level are located above and side of the caverns to prevent water drainage from fractures during the construction stage as well as during operation. The borehole tests were performed from a drilling adit excavated from the eastern end water gallery tunnel, while the chamber test was conducted at the southern edge of an exploratory drift extending from the central water gallery tunnel."
