"Foundation for tracks of coke transfer car and dust extraction pipe was designed as series of isolated foundations spaced at 11.0m along length of coke oven battery resting on soil at depth of 2.5m. In one region the foundations are close to adjacent 12m deep underground junction house. Five foundations in this zone were constructed on backfilled soil without proper compaction instead of engineering soil fill or concrete fill. The foundations settled under loads and the supported frame structure tilted after equipment erection and during trials endangering the safety of the structure and equipment operation. The distorted structure had to be rectified in-situ by arresting settlement. In order to stabilize the foundation and supported structure the supporting soil had to be strengthened in situ without any dismantling, reconstruction and adverse effect to equipment operation. This paper presents the case study on the evaluation of defects for the foundation failure and analysis of the problem, proposed rectification of the situation by appropriate soil stabilization scheme, monitoring of the stabilization operations and verification of effectiveness of the rectification work by measurement of settlements. The implemented solution has ensured safety of the structure and equipment without any adverse impact on normal operation.INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUNDNew Coke Oven Battery was being installed for an integrated Steel Plant. The hot coke from oven is pushed out after completion of coking process through a coke transfer car onto a hot coke receiving car. The coke transfer car runs on rail track parallel to the line of ovens forming the coke oven battery. One rail is supported on the structure of the operating platform of the battery and the second rail rests on independent structure of track beams. A large diameter pipe for extraction of the dust emitted during coke pushing operation is also supported on the same structure that supports the track beams. The entire structure rests on columns spaced at approximately 11.0m along the length of the battery. The columns transfer load to ground through individual foundations resting on competent subsoil strata.Two sets of foundations for the rail track beam support and dust extraction pipe support are adjacent to deep underground junction house of coke carrying conveyor. The depth of the pit for the junction house is 12m. The layout and arrangement of the foundations in this region around the junction house (JH-1) is shown in the “Figs. 1a, 1b”."

INTRODUCTION Modern mine management is constantly striving to develop improved mining methods which will not only increase productivity, but will also provide a safer work environment and make the most efficient use of our natural resources. Progress can be seen in this area by tracing mining methods through history. Work that was originally done with hand tools progressed with the age of mechanization to conventional mining, matured to continuous and longwall mining, and the advent of short¬wall mining, a combination of continuous and longwall, has recently been seen. This new method of shortwall mining provides a promising method for safe and ex¬pedient coal extraction. This study focuses upon the planning, design de¬velopment, and operation of the first producing short¬wall unit in the US which was operated in the Pittsburgh coal seam in northern West Virginia. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine is located in northern West Virginia at Grant Town in the heart of the high volatile Pittsburgh coal seam. Originally opened in 1901, the mine has be¬come one of the largest in the US, encompassing an area of approximately 103.6 sq km (40 sq miles). The seam being mined was the high volatile Pittsburgh seam which ranged in thickness from 1.8 to 2.96 m (6 to 91/2 ft). Three types of mining methods were employed: con¬tinuous mining, longwalling, and shortwalling, with each type accounting for 50%, 30%, and 20% of total pro¬duction, respectively. A total of 630 contract and super¬visory personnel were employed to produce the mine's designed annual tonnage of 1.8 Mt (2 million st). There were ten producing sections, eight continuous miners, one longwall, and one shortwall, operating a total of 22 unit shifts per day. Eight shafts, varying in depth from 80.2 to 194.2 m (263 to 637 ft) provided entrance to the Pittsburgh coal seam. These shafts were used for ventilation, portaling, coal hoisting, supply, and emergency escape hoisting. Ventilation was achieved by means of three exhaust fans which provided 707.9 m3/s (1.5 million cfm) of air to the mine and removed approximately 141 584 m3 (5 mil¬lion cu ft) of methane per 24 hr period. The room-and-pillar method was used for secondary recovery with designed barrier blocks between panels of 61 m (200 ft) in width. In the special number of the magazine Ocl und Kohle (Oct. 22, 1940) dedicated to the petroleum industry of southeastern Europe, there appeared several articles relating to Yugos1avia.t In the first article the author calls attention to the fact that there are two fields in Yugoslavia that have been explored and exploited by more than 100 wells at variable depths during the last 50 years. These are on the Island of Mura, at the confluence of the Mura and the Drave. Additional exploration drilling in various other parts of the country has been without result, but certain ones of these explorations have revealed the existence of gas horizons that have some value, which are being used for industrial purposes. The depths of 50 of these wells was roo to 200 m.; the depths of 50 wells oil the Island of Mura ran from zoo to 500 m.; of 2 ; wells, 500 to I000 m.; of ro wells from rooo to 2000 meters. The deepest well drilling in Yugoslavia has reached 2000 in. In the Valley of Morave, in the region of Selnica, I00 km. south of Nish, there have been discovered asphalt-bearing limestones, which contain about 15 per cent asphalt and are associated with bituminous clays. Later, at Paclenica, important deposits of natural gas were found. A zone rich in gas and oil seepages runs through Pracec, Miklenska, Bujavica, etc. The author studied these regions from the point of view of stratigraphy and tectonics. The anticlines and gas-bearing domes are concentrated in two zones: the region of the Drave (Island of Mura) and the region of the Save, southeast of zagreb, which contains the gas field in exploitation in the region of Bujavica. A full description of the productive region of the Island of Mura has been given by Egon Bohm, a geologist, in the second article mentioned. This includes a history of the exploration and exploitation that took place under Hungarian rule in this region. The most important exploration was effected between 1884 and 1885 by Stavenov and Stinger, of Vienna. In 1927 work was done in the same region by Anton Raky, a well-known explorer who makes work of this kind his specialty.

"Abstract - The Mount Fronsac North volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is the most recently discovered massive sulfide body in the Bathurst Mining Camp. The deposit occurs within a sequence of intercalated fine-grained felsic tuff and sedimentary rocks (Little Falls member), at the top of the Nepisiguit Falls Formation. Aphyric to sparsely feldspar-phyric rhyolite and related volcanic rocks of the Flat Landing Brook Formation overlie the host sequence. The massive and semimassive parts of the deposit have a north-south strike length of 525 m and a dip of ~45°E; the deposit is continuous downdip for 600 m, and thickness varies from 2 to 20 m. The deposit contains an estimated geologic resource of 14 Mt of low-grade, semimassive (>60%) to locally massive sulfides, and includes a high-grade zone of 1.26 Mt grading 7.65% Zn, 2.18% Pb, 0.14% Cu, 40.3 g/t Ag, and 0.40 g/t Au. The semimassive to massive sulfide intersections occur in an envelope of quartz-sericite±chlorite schist, which is interpreted to be intensely deformed felsic tuff. This sequence has a maximum thickness of 140 m and contains significant (up to 50%) fine- to coarse-grained disseminated pyrite. The pyritic envelope has a strike length of 900 m and extends over 1000 m downdip. Massive sulfides are found throughout this alteration envelope, but more commonly occur at or near the upper contact. The significance of the discovery of this deposit is that it represents a near surface discovery of a large tonnage sulfide body in a mature mining camp, one in which the possibility of discovery of a new shallow deposit had been all but discounted. This opens the possibility for future discoveries in this part of the Bathurst Mining Camp. Le gisement est situé dans une séquence de tufs felsiques à grains fins interlités de roches sédimentaires (membre de Little Falls, au sommet de la Formation de Nepisiguit Falls. La partie massive et la semimassive s’étendent du nord au sud sur 525 m et ont un pendage de ~45°E; le gisement est continu sur 600 m en angle de chute et son épaisseur varie de 2 à 20 m. L’importance de cette découverte tient à ce qu’elle est un exemple d’un gisement à fort tonnage nouvellement découvert à une faible profondeur dans un camp minier mature, i.e., un camp ou l’on ne croyait plus qu’il était possible de trouver un gisement près de la surface. Ceci ouvre la porte à la possibilité d’autres découvertes dans cette partie du Camp Minier de Bathurst."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted a series of laboratory tests to investigate the effectiveness of using a flooded-bed scrubber with exhaust ventilation in deep-cut faces of up to 12.2 m in length. An experimental test program to determine the impact on respirable dust levels resulting from changes in face airflow, curtain setback distance, operator positioning, and operating parameters of the external spray system on the miner was completed. Gravimetric sampling was conducted in the immediate return and at three sampling locations on the off-curtain side of the entry. Statistically significant differences in dust levels on the order of 0.5 to 1.2 mg/m3 were observed between specific sampling locations and changes in several test parameters. Dust sampling results indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber and exhaust ventilation can be a viable dust control system for extracting deep cuts up to 12.2 m in length. The impact on methane was not evaluated.

We have developed a novel method - at the laboratory scale - comprising an ion-exchange separation and a membrane-electrolysis step for the purpose of zero-waste regeneration of spent HCl pickling liquors originating from hot-dip galvanizing of common steels. It is aimed at the parallel regeneration of HCl and iron. Experiments revealed that iron can be electrodeposited at high current efficiencies by maintaining the following conditions: 0.04-0.08 M HCl, 500-1000 A/m2, 20°C and stationary electrolyte in a conventional cell. Zinc in the solution did not disturb the deposition of iron, however it contaminated the product and it poisons the anion-exchange membrane required to tackle acidity during electrolysis. For a preliminary separation, anion-exchange tests were carried out to produce pure iron solutions. Beyond the equilibrium studies, column experiments were carried out showing that low flow rates of the loading solution and the ~1.5 M HCl eluent are essential for separation.

Physical characteristics of possible importance in the acid leaching of Chrysocolla have been evaluated. Surface area studies and pore size distribution indicate: 1) a large surface area (350 m /gm); 2) an average pore size of 13 or 16 Å , depending upon use of the adsorption, or desorption, branch of the Type IV isotherm in the evaluation; ) the presence of a significant fraction of pores of size less than 15 Å determined by the accumulation surface area method. The initial structure is micro- crystalline on the basis of x-ray powder patterns; the silica leach residue is amorphous and has only 24 m2 /gm surface area, and loses integrity when dry. However, readsorption of copper onto the wet leach residue gives a product with integrity and 100 m2 /gm surface area. Visual observation of the leach residues supports evidence of a non-protective diffusion mechanism of leaching which is well correlated by the shrinking core model previously presented.

The Bannockburn gold prospect is a new discovery in Ontario's oldest gold camp at Eldorado, eastern Ontario. Mono Gold Mines Inc. of Vancouver, British Columbia, acquired the property in 1980 and in 1984 discovered a previously unreported gold bearing quartz vein system to the northeast of the old Bannockburn Mine. Extensive diamond drilling carried out since 1985 defined a quartz vein system over 475 m (1 ,500 ft) of strike to a depth of over 105 m (350 ft). Limited underground exploration by decline to the 22.9 m (75 ft) level in 1988 confirmed the continuity and tenor of the quartz veins. Gold occurs as native metal with minor sulphides and bismuth tellurides in a quartz carbonate vein system within metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks of the Grenville Province. Metallurgical test work on a surface bulk sample was favourable. Estimates of drill indicated reserves have been made as well as reserves based on the limited underground exploration.

The South Wall Base Case Design for Mt Whaleback indicated that along portion of the South Wall a cigar shaped synclinal keel, contain- ing 14 800 m', of Dales Gorge Member ore, would be unkeyed and bed- ding undercut. The dry "ore lobe" slope would be 60m high, unbenched and approximately 170 m long. Stability analyses using specific design parameters established that artificial reinforcement could stabilise the slope and be economically justifiable. To implement the slope design reinforcement for such a complex geo- logical structure it was necessary that all functions pertaining to slope excavation be integrated and co-ordinated within the Mine Geotechnical Section. The objective being to minimise slope damage and thereby optimise the effect of design reinforcement. The successful excavation of the ore lobe in 1988, three years after the introduction of artificial reinforcement, was achieved by strictly main- taining the following parameters. 1. Accurate Geological Model 2. Controlled Perimeter Blasting 3. Controlled Excavation Techniques 4. Quality control -Reinforcement Installation 5. Additional Reinforcement.

Surface characterization techniques, i.e. contact angle measurement, atomic force microscopy (AFM) surface force and surface imaging measurement, were applied to investigate the molybdenite surface in aqueous solution. It was shown that the cleaved basal surface of molybdenite was very hydrophobic with a 92 degree water contact angle. The non-polar component of the solid surface free energy is 50.52 mJ/m2 while the polar components are almost zero. The solid surface was not reactive and was only weakly charged at the pH 6. When the aqueous media changes from water to 1×10-4 M KEX solution, the measured contact angle, adhesion force and surface roughness all increase slightly. However, ethanol rinsing made the surface change back to the bare substrate. It was suggested that the hydrophobic chemical, i.e. dixanthogen, which was shown in the morphology of patches by the AFM image, physically adsorbed on the hydrophobic molybdenite surface through the hydrophobic interaction.

Located about an hour drive south from Washington, D.C., the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) contracted with Skanska-Corman-McLean (SCM) to deliver a new Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas "Mac" Middleton Bridge, which takes U.S. 301 over the Potomac River, spanning 1.9 mi (3 km) from Maryland to Virginia. The new bridge aimed to improve capacity, safety and access of the roadway and was planned as a four-lane span with deep foundations that would be constructed fewer than 150 ft (45 m) north of the existing alignment of the more than 80-year-old bridge. The new Harry Nice Bridge opened in the fall of 2022 with a design life of more than 100 years, servicing 12 ft (4 m) wide lanes with 2 ft (0.6m) shoulders, doubling capacity, enhancing emergency response, upgrading maintenance and inspection activity access, and featuring lane sharing for cyclists.

The Fortieth Regular Meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute was called to order in the Hotel Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, Wednesday, June 10, 1942, at 11:30 a.m., by President, Wetzel, who presented Mr. William A. Fealey who, in turn, introduced Mr. Bracken Lee, Mayor of Price, Utah, who made the address of welcome. President Wetzel then made a few remarks. The Secretary announced with regret that, due to the critical illness of Mr. Sidney Hale, he would be unable to at- tend the meeting. On motion of Charles M. Schloss, duly seconded and carried, the reading of the minutes of the Thirty-ninth Regular Meeting was dispensed with. Mr. Schloss also moved that the Chair appoint the usual committees, which motion was seconded and carried. President Wetzel then announced that the committees would be appointed during the afternoon session. Following routine announcements, the meeting recessed at 12 o'clock noon to reconvene at 1:30 p.m.

Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located onSumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54 000 m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2 km2 and to a depth of 1000 m below surface (412 m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55 g/t Au (variable cut-off) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource.   The deposit is associated with a calc-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200 m diameter at surface to 500 m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbledykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.   Hydrothermal alteration of Old Tonalite and adjacent rocks is centred on the Old Tonalite and is zoned from a core of pervasive potassic alteration grading to an outer propylitic halo. At depth a propylitic assemblage is developed in the low grade core in the Old Tonalite. Phyllic alteration, late stage and mainly fracture controlled, overprints both potassic and inner propylytic zones. Intermediate argillic alteration overprinting is widespread, particularly on the eastern side of the hydrothermal system, where advanced argillic alteration overlies argillic alteration.   Ore grade mineralisation is cylindrical in shape, up to 800 m in diameter, and is centred on the Old Tonalite. A high grade shell (>0.75% Cu) forms an upward tapering cone in and around the Old Tonalite and reaches the surface in the centre of the deposit. Lower in the shell >l g/t Au and >2 g/t Ag accompany >1% Cu. Below 75 m above sea level mineralisation in the Old Tonalite rapidly decreases as a weakly mineralised core develops, but the limb continues to contain mineralisation to at least 412 m below sea level. Fracture and vein-controlled chalcopyrite and bornite are the dominant hypogene copper minerals and are the hosts for most of the gold mineralisation. Gold occurs free and in the lattice of the copper sulphides, and has been observed in quartz.   Weathering, especially where argillic alteration is developed, has produced a strongly leached cap, up to 147 m thick, below which is an irregular copper enriched supergene zone. Where leaching is not developed, such as over the centre of the deposit, an irregular oxide zone and a weakly developed supergene zone may be present.

Brace yourself-what used to be a 1 billion ton deposit is now a 1 Gt deposit. And that 1520-hp ball mill is now a 1.134-MW ball mill. Beginning with this issue, all engineering units and statistics in MINING ENGINEERING will be reported in SI units. The exception to this is the Technical Papers section, where units may still be reported by dual notation. For the past four years, ME has reported all units of measurement first in SI, followed in parentheses by the equivalent English value. This metrication policy, adopted by the SME-AIME Board of Directors in September 1975, was designed to aid magazine readers through a transitional period from English unit reporting to SI unit reporting. In October 1979, the SME-AIME Publications Board completed the English-to-SI transition by requesting the editorial staff, beginning February 1980, to report exclusively in SI. The Publications Board also requested the editors to prepare a chart of SI conversions useful to ME readers; this information follows on pages 156-157. The outcome of this recommendation was the SI system of units, an abbreviation for le Systeme International d'Unites (the International System of Units). It replaces the more familiar cgs (centimeter-gram-second) system and the m/ksA (meter-kilogram-second-Ampere) system. SI consists of seven base units, two supplementary units, and a number of derived units. Other units, called allowable units, may be used even though they are not part of SI. The seven base units are: meter (length); second (time); kilogram (mass); mole (amount of substance); kelvin (temperature); ampere (electric current); and candela (luminous intensity). The two supplementary units are radian, a measurement of plane angle, and steradian, a measurement of solid angle. Supplementary units can be used in combination with SI units, e.g., radiant intensity is expressed in W/sr, watts per steradian. Derived units are combinations of base and supplementary units. Velocity is expressed as meters per second (m/s), and acceleration as m/s'. Using the relation established by Newton's second law of motion, force is expressed as kg-m/s2, more commonly known as the newton (N). Energy (work) is force times distance, expressed as kg-m/s2 and known as the joule (J). Power is work per unit time, expressed as kg, m2/s3 and known as the watt (W). Allowable units are the exception to the rule-they are not taken from base or supplementary units but, nevertheless, are used in the SI system. Volume units are normally expressed as the cubic measure of a length, such as cm 3. But a fluid volume of a cubic decimeter (dm3) is called a liter (L); the "L" is capitalized in another special SI rule to keep the lowercase "1" from being confused with a numeric "1". Other allowable units are degrees Celsius (°C) for temperature; and the minute (min), hour (h), day (d), and year (a) for time measurements. The prefixes in the table on the following page are used with SI units to express the magnitude of a measured quantity. A mill that processes 1000 tons of ore per day would be designated a 1 kt/d mill; a mine producing 10 million tons of ore per year would be called a 10 Mt/a mine. The rule here is to use prefixes that keep the value in a convenient range from 0.1 to 1000. In other words, it would be incorrect to write 25 000 kg-the prefix should be changed to indicate 25 Mt. One of the distinct advantages of SI is that it retains the decimal relation between multiples and submultiples of the base units for each physical quantity except for time. One more rule of SI syntax-numbers are separated into groups of three with a space between each group rather than a comma, e.g., 3,839,174 becomes 3 839 174. By the same token, a decimal number is also broken by spaces, e.g. 0.738153 is written as 0.738 153.

The beneficiation of heavy metal oxides, such as iron ore, is usually performed with heavy medium separation in cyclones, static baths and lately with Larcodems. Atomized ferrosilicon is most suitable as a heavy medium at densities above 3600 kg/m3 whereas a mixture of milled and atomized ferrosilicon is suitable at densities below 3600 kg/m3. When operating a beneficiation plant at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 the quality of the ferrosilicon particles is an important factor that influences the control of the beneficiation process. Therefore, it is important to know how the rheology would be affected by the ferrosilicon quality as it also influences the control of the process at these elevated densities. Background The Kumba Resources Sishen Iron Ore Mine in South Africa produces 26.5 Mt iron ore per annum from its beneficiation plant. The ore body consists mainly of laminated and massive type hematite ore that is crushed down to ?90mm before being beneficiated by means of a combination of Wemco drums, Larcodem and dense medium cyclone separators. The need for higher densities When the percentage of high-density gangue2 is higher than normal in the run-of-mine (ROM), a higher separation density is necessary to produce a product to specification. Certain ore types of this quality in the Sishen reserves require a separating density higher than 4000 kg/m3, whereas densities would normally average 3600 kg/m3 when beneficiating ores of normal high-density gangue content. Sink and float tests conducted on the ROM material at Sishen revealed some interesting characteristics. In the waste fraction, (density < 3600 kg/m3) it was found that the %Fe was <21% (Fig. 1). Similarly, for the product fraction (density >3000 kg/m3), the percentage Fe varied between 35% and 67.2%. The bulk of the material (88%) actually had a density greater than 4000 kg/m3 and a Fe content that varied between 63% and 67.2%. At a density interval of 3600 to 4000 kg/m3, the Fe content varied from 37% to 60% with an average of 45%.

The Mount Wright gold deposit is located near the town of Ravenswood, ~90 km south of Townsville, in north Queensland. The deposit has been mined by underground methods since 2006. It produced approximately 138 koz Au in the 2011 - 2012 financial year and has a total endowment of approximately 1 Moz Au. To facilitate near mine exploration, a re-logging campaign of 600+ diamond and RC drill holes was recently conducted, resulting in a revised three-dimensional (3D) geological model and improved understanding of the ore controls and the mineralised system. The deposit is within a Permo-Carboniferous breccia complex approximately 350 m diameter and more than 1200 m deep. It consists of early peripheral granite-rich breccia, polymict breccia, a rhyolite spine and a late tuffisite (fine-grained milled breccia) pipe. The rhyolite spine is approximately 60 m + 250 m + at least 1200 m deep and is zoned with massive, flow-banded and breccia phases that are in part gradational with the other breccias. There is extensive sericitic alteration centred on the tuffisite and rhyolite units and fading out into the shallower and peripheral polymict and granite-rich breccias. There is also a broad pattern of metal zoning with elevated Pb-Zn ¦ Ag in the upper 400 m, Au-Cu-Bi below 400 m fading out below ~850 m, and a poorly defined deep Mo-W-Te-Sb anomaly. The majority of the Au ore is between 400 and 850 m below the surface in the rhyolite spine. Below this, Au mineralisation is less coherent, and more localised in the margins of the rhyolite and in the adjacent tuffisite. The developing model is that the ore is not confined to or necessarily directly genetically related to the rhyolite spine, but is driven by other phases of intrusion that also generated the tuffisite pipe. A storage and drainage tunnel advancing below I-75 in Detroit, Michigan experienced sudden subsidence. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was damaged to the extent that its shield, cutting head and extensive interior components needed to be extracted and replaced along with several completed tunnel segments. The tunnel was 16 feet (4.9m) in diameter with crown over 79 feet (24m) deep at the time. The tunneling contractor immediately engaged their designers and specialty subcontractors to develop a scheme to access the machine and repair the tunnel. They required a shaft 99 feet (30m) deep, with unobstructed plan dimension of 50 feet (15m) to accommodate the large components that needed to be removed and replaced. This precluded the application of an internally braced excavation and instead earth support solutions focused on use of a compression ring. Since the completed tunnel section behind the TBM obstructed closure of the compression ring below its invert, this paper describes the innovative access shaft solution employed. A conventional compression ring was constructed using 5 feet (1.5m) diameter drilled shafts down to the tunnel crown. In front of, and to the sides of the tunnel heading, the secant shafts were extended to over 150 feet (46m) depth, creating a horseshoe of support extending 50 feet (15m) below the planned excavation invert. Larger diameter "King Pile" shafts were drilled immediately to either side of the tunnel, overlapped into each end of the secant "horseshoe". The king pile shafts, together with a heavily reinforced ring beam above the crown elevation, acted as a door frame to transfer hoop loads from the incomplete secant arc into reaction supports above and below the tunnel. These oversize king pile shafts were extended and socketed into rock over 70 feet (21m) below tunnel invert. Very tight installation tolerances were necessary to maintain secant shaft alignment to depths exceeding 150 feet (46m). The project operational, geotechnical, and quality data was managed and visualized using a custom GIS interface. This paper will present the design approach employed and review the construction and quality program selected to repair the tunnel.

Austria produced approximately 800 cisterns of 10,000 kg. each (56,000 bbls.) of crude oil of a 0.9428 sp. gr. during 1935. Of this Gosting II well near Zistersdorf, owned by the Erdolproduktions-Gesellschaft m.b.H., produced 86 per cent of the total, averaging a little over 1.8 cisterns, or about 125 bbl., per day. Gosting IVa of the same company was put in production early in December and produced a total of about 70 cisterns (4900 bbl.). Gosting IV was a failure, but a directional hole drilled from the same derrick produced Gosting IVa. Gosting I, a well owned jointly by the company above mentioned and the Raky-Danubia, was deepened late in the year and made about 2800 bbl. of oil at the rate of 70 bbl. per day. Completions during the year were as follows: In the Gosting pool, Gosting IV and IVa, drilled with rotary tools, the latter producing from Sarmat at a depth of 934 meters (3065 ft.); Kronberg I, of European Gas & Electric Co. with cable tools in Flysch at a depth of 566 m. as a dry hole; in the Oberlaa gas pool, one cable-tool well of the same company at a depth of 266 m. as a dry hole and one Fauck-Haiek system well of the Vacuum Oil Co. at a depth of 483 m. as a dry hole; one rotary hole of the European Gas & Electric Co. at Enzersdorf a/d. Fischa plugged and abandoned in Sarmat after a blow out and gas eruption at a depth of 699.5 meters. The status of drilling wells at close of the year is as follows: In the Gosting pool, Erdol Bohr- und Verwertungs G.m.b.H., north of the producing area, was drilling with rotary at 990 m., Raky-Danubia is rigged up to deepen the old Windisch-Baumgarten hole, Rohoel-Gewin-nungs A.G. (Vacuum-Shell combination) rigging up rotary south of the production, and Steinberg-Naphta G.m.b.H. (Musil) was deepened with light rotary to 830 m.; at Enzersdorf a/d. Fischa, the European Gas & Electric Co. E-2 rotary-drilled hole stood at 1533 m. in Miocene waiting
