A new hydrothermal field with massive sulfide deposits was discovered in 2004 at 16º 38.4?N, 46º 28.5?W on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Hydrothermal signals had already been recorded from bottom waters and sediments in this area during cruise 19 of R/V Professor Logatchev in 2000. This site was revisited during the 24th cruise of R/V Professor Logatchev in February 2004 when samples of massive sulfides were recovered and video records of the deposits made. The basalt hosted hydrothermal field is situated at a depth of 3700-3750 m, 600 m above the inner floor on the eastern slope of the rift valley. Structurally, the new field is located at the intersection of a deep along-axis marginal fault and a transverse sub-latitudinal dislocation. Six sulfide mounds as well as associated metalliferous sediments were mapped (sampled and/or recorded by video profiling) within the hydrothermal site. The largest ore body, 500 x 225 m, in the southern part of the field consists of small blocky talus and relics of sulfide chimneys partly covered by iron oxyhydroxides. The chimneys are 1-5 m high. The southern and western boundaries of the massive sulfide deposit have not yet been delineated. More than 1,100 kg of massive sulfides and stockwork mineralization were sampled at 7 sites by dredge and TV-grab. Everywhere, iron sulfides were the principal minerals present. Pyrite in association with lesser amounts of chalcopyrite occurs in both massive sulfides and stockwork mineralization. Of particular interest is the chalcopyrite-siliceous stockwork where silicified and chalcopyritized basalts are intruded by a network of chalcopyrite veinlets. These zones could be fairly thick and enriched in base metals. Sphalerite was very rare.

Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Current mine issues are; • Both surface fans are at full capacity (250 m3/s 1.4 kPa) • Both gas drainage pumps are at full capacity (2.3 m3/s) • Alternatives to extensive in seam pre drainage being investigated (surface to in seam hydro fracture) Review of mine design underway This paper describes the seam characterisation, assessment of mining hazards and summary of the management plan developed to address the risks identified. A review of current mine underground environmental performance is also provided

Abstract - Exploration at the Specogna gold deposit has identified a geological resource of 65.0 Mt grading 1.63 g/t Au, which equates to 3 million ounces of contained gold. This resource is hosted in a low-sulfidation epithermal deposit of Miocene age that is localized along the northwesterlytrending Sandspit fault. The fault has juxtaposed Late Cretaceous mudstone of the Haida Formation to the west, with Late Tertiary coarse clastic sediments and lesser andesitic volcanic rocks of the Skonun Formation to the east. A plagioclase porphyritic dacite dike intrudes the Haida mudstone and Skonun sediments along the fault. Gold mineralization, in hydrothermal breccias, veins and stockworks developed mainly in Skonun sediments and dacite. These are formed in an 800 m long zone that roughly parallels the Sandspit fault. The gold zone is funnel-shaped in cross-section, approximately 300 m wide at surface, 220 m above sea level, and narrows to approximately 50 m, at sea level. The deposit lies within an elongate zone of moderate to intense hydrothermal alteration that, at surface, extends over a known area of approximately 2 km2. Its western extent is bounded by the Sandspit fault. There is an asymmetric alteration zonation, with a core of silicic-potassic (adularia) and smectite-illite clay alteration that is bounded to the east by argillic alteration. Similar zoning defined by the distribution of metals reflects the position of the main feeder conduit. Mineralization of altered wallrock is dominated by 1% to 4% auriferous pyrite and marcasite. Gold and silver occur as electrum; individual silver minerals have not been identified. Other sulfides are rare, and are identified only microscopically. The mineral suite is typical of low-sulfidation epithermal systems. Gold occurs in early, multi-phase, variably bladed and banded quartz veins and breccias, which are cut by barren, single phase, drusy quartz veins.

Clark volcano is a large volcanic center on the active arc front of the intraoceanic Kermadec arc. It is one of the two southern-most Kermadec arc volcanoes (the other being Whakatane volcano) that sits on oceanic crust before the transition to continental New Zealand, and is underlain by the 17-km-thick Hikurangi Plateau, which is presently subducting beneath the southern section of the Kermadec arc. Unusual K-rich basaltic lavas have been recovered from Clark (1.5 to 2.25 wt.% K2O), together with more typical basaltic-andesite, andesite and dacite rocks. The total volume of the Clark volcanic center is ~90 km3, calculated from the summit of the volcano down to the 2,500 m contour (which marks the inflection point of the volcano flanks with the surrounding seafloor) and comprises two separate edifices similar in size; the northern one having a volume of ~4.57 km3 and the southern one 4.43 km3. The volcano has a maximum relief of ~1,645 m from the 2,500 m contour to the summit of the shallower northern edifice shoaling to 855 m below sea level. The northern edifice is comprised of twin peaks each consisting of a constructional cone, with evidence of sector collapse having occurred between the cones. A more recent, smaller cone again has grown on the eastern flank between these summit cones. Massive, blocky lavas and coarse talus dominate the summits of the cones, with finer-grained volcaniclastic material and sediments a feature of the volcano flanks. The southern edifice is noticeably more dissected than the northern one, having a pronounced horst in the centre of the volcano bounded by 5-6 km-long faults. There is no obvious constructional cone atop the southern volcanic edifice.

The Galore Creek copper deposits lie in the Stikine River district of northwest British Columbia, a largely undeveloped region which possesses rugged mountain terrain with deeply incised valleys which support dense undergrowth. Timberline is normally at about 1300 m (4265 ft) and the higher levels contain glacial systems and large ice fields with peaks rising to 3500 m (I 1,483 ft). A location map of the Galore Creek area is given in Fig. 1. In the late 1920s, field parties under the direction of F.A. Kerr (1948) of the Geological Survey of Canada completed geological surveys of the district. Primary access for this work was provided by riverboats on the Stikine and Iskut Rivers. Kerr's party had to contend with extremely difficult travel conditions that required considerable backpacking, augmented by pack dogs in certain cases. Absence of ground control led Kerr to establish his own topographic maps. Among the geological data established was the recognition [ ] that small bodies of orthoclase porphyry in the district are often well mineralized with base metal sulfides. Copper mineralization in the upper Galore Creek valley, a tributary of Scud River which flows into the Stikine River some 80 km (50 miles) south of the small settlement of Telegraph Creek, was originally discovered during aerial reconnaissance by M. Morrison and W. Buckholz while prospecting for Hudson Bay Exploration and Development Co. Ltd. in 1955. Malachite- and azurite-stained out- crops in several parts of the Galore Creek watershed are clearly visible from distances of 500 m ( 1640 ft) or more. Claims were staked in 1956 and the copper showings were partly mapped, trenched, and investigated by shallow diamond drilling. Because of the remoteness of the area and higher priorities for expenditures elsewhere, no further work was undertaken and most of the claims were allowed to expire.

Construction of the MBTA Red Line Extension through Somerville, MA, called for driving twin tube tunnels through a zone of approximately 83m (273 ft) with mixed face conditions. While the majority of the tunnels were driven through competent hard rock using drill and blast techniques, the mixed face zone was advanced using floating crown bars for primary support. The overburden consisted of medium clay, underlain by water bearing glacial till, over a sloping bedrock surface. Due to the unusual nature of the construction techniques, a program was undertaken by the Contractor to monitor ground movement and stresses in the temporary steel supports. This paper presents a description of the instrumentation employed, as well as the measured ground movements and support stresses. Additionally, the tunneling techniques are briefly presented and commented upon. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Davis Square to Porter Square Tunnel Contract is part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authorities (MBTA) Red Line Extension from Harvard Square in Cambridge to the Alewife Brook Parkway via Somerville. The 5.1km (17,000 ft) Red Line Extension consists of four major new stations, three of which will be interlinked via tunnel construction, and the remaining station will be the last link of an open cut portion, and a terminal point for this phase of the extension. This 866m (2,790 ft) portion began at Porter Square in Cambridge and rose at a 4% slope through Somerville, terminating at the new Davis Square Station. Twin tube tunnels were constructed through 763m (2,517 ft) of rock and 83m (273 ft) of mixed face conditions at the Davis Square end. Figure 1 presents a plan view of the entire contract.

Known epithermal deposits in the Coromandel region belong to the low-sulphidation type, represented by three subtypes: (1) andesite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag, (2) rhyolite-hosted epithermal Au-Ag, and (3) andesite-hosted polymetallic veins. Paleo-depths for a range ofdeposits are estimated using various features including: paleo-surface indicators (e.g. sinters), hydrostatic pressures estimated from homogenisation temperature measurements on fluid inclusions, and alteration mineralogy. Paleo-depth estimates to the base of the ore zone for the rhyolite-hosted Coromandel deposits are in the range 200 to 500 m. Andesite-hosted Au-Ag deposits have more variable paleo-depths, and are deeper (up to 950 m) in those deposits with base metals at depth. The majority of Coromandel Au-Ag deposits have limited depth extents (<200 m) of economic grade mineralisation, although Waihi and Karangahake are notable exceptions with depth extents of 575 m and 700 m respectively. Limited depth extents of economic ore are a feature of epithermal systems worldwide and are commonly attributed to gold deposition from boiling fluids. Under hydrostatic conditions in epithermal/geothermal systems, boiling in an up-flowing hydrothermal fluid is controlled by the boiling point for depth (BPD) curve. From fluid inclusion studies of many low-sulphidation epithermal systems, deposition of electrum in economic concentrations appears to be confined to a temperature window of 260 to 180¦C. This means that for dilute, gas-poor fluids that follow the BPD curve, gold deposition is limited to a vertical depth zone of about 400 m, with its upper boundary at about 100 m below the ground surface. The greater depth extent at Waihi and Karangahake, can be explained by mixing of/a deep, hot (300¦C) fluid with cooler (c. 200¦C) heated ground waters. This has the effect of lowering the 260¦C isotherm by up to 300 m, thereby increasing the depth range of economic grade gold deposition within the 260 to 180¦Cwindow of electrum deposition.

This study investigates the effect of ammonium thiosulfate on the leaching of gold from the contacts of unpopulated cut electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs). Studies in the literature show ammonium thiosulfate to be a viable option in comparison to the commonly used but hazardous cyanide leaching route. However, the simultaneous dissolution of Cu interferes with the Au leaching reaction, often limiting the extraction to moderate levels. To optimize the system, an ammoniumthiosulfate system containing 0.5M ammonia, 0.5M ammonium thiosulfate, and Cu(II) sulfate at varying concentrations was studied as an alternative hydrometallurgical option for the recovery of gold from PCB. Tests were done with unpopulated standardized model PCBs (cut to 15 x 30mm pieces). Gold extraction of 47.3% was achieved after a 24-hour leaching experiment with a 0.02M copper background concentration. Further experiments focused using different initial background Cu concentrations (0M – 0.1M) to determine its effect on both gold and copper extractions. An initial Cu concentration of 0.045M resulted in the highest gold extraction, with 93.7% extraction after 6 hours of leaching. Further analysis of the data shows that the kinetic rate of gold leaching is correlated in a first-order dependence with the actual copper concentration in the solution, which increases with the concomitant dissolution of copper and gold from the PCBs. A lower threshold of 0.017M and an upper threshold of 0.15M copper in solution were determined, in between which gold extraction shows this first-order rate increase. The upper threshold is potentially linked to the onset of copper precipitation, which blinds the metal surfaces, slowing further leaching. The findings of this study suggest that in an industrial recovery operation of gold from waste PCB using the thiosulfate method, copper concentrations need to be carefully monitored, and the process should preferably operate with uncut or coarsely cut untreated boards to minimize exposure to copper circuits.

Roof bolter operators may be exposed to high respirable dust concentrations on continuous miner sections with blowing face ventilation when bolting is performed downwind of the continuous miner. One solution to reduce the high respirable dust concentrations is to use a canopy air curtain (CAC) to deliver clean air from a filtered blower fan directly to the bolter operators under the canopies. The influence of CAC installation in the airflow and dust dispersion around the location of the roof bolter operator can be evaluated by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). This study, performed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), considers two scenarios: (1) a roof bolting machine in the center of the entry for installation of the fifth row of bolts from the face, and (2) a roof bolting machine positioned close to the face for the installation of the last row of bolts. In both scenarios, the bolting machine is placed in an environment which contains 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust and is ventilated by a blowing curtain with 3,000 cfm (1.42 m3/s) of air. This environment is used to simulate the roof bolter machine operating downstream of a continuous mining machine. Two operation positions are simulated at the same bolting location: dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts; and dual drill heads in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s). INTRODUCTION Roof bolting machines are used to drill bolt holes into the roof of an underground mine at specified patterns and to install roof bolts to secure the roof from falling. At times, the roof bolting machine is also used to install rib bolts; however, only the roof bolting operation was considered in this simulation. Though the roof bolting operation drastically improved the safety of miners from roof falls, some roof bolter operators are experiencing health problems associated with respirable dust. Based on recent statistics [1], following a low point in the late 1990s where the prevalence of coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) in miners with 25 years or more tenure was approximately 5%, CWP now exceeds 10% for miners with 25 years or more of tenure. In central Appalachia (Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia), 20.6% of long-tenured miners have CWP and 4.5% have progressive massive fibrosis, the most severe form of CWP. CWP, also known as black lung, is an occupational respiratory disease that has no cure and can ultimately be fatal. The only way to prevent the incidence of black lung is to eliminate miners’ exposure to respirable coal mine dust. Current U.S. regulations require that the overall respirable dust concentration to be 1.5 mg/m3 or less for a full-shift sampling if respirable quartz is not present; otherwise, the standard is 10 divided by the percent quartz (not to exceed the 1.5 mg/m3 respirable dust standard) [2, 3].

Autogenous grinding, broadly defined as the self-comminution of ore in a cylindrical tumbling mill without using auxiliary grinding media, was first applied in the early 1930s in the so-called Hadsel mills (Hardinge, 1955) as seen in [Fig. 1], mainly used in gold mines on the US West Coast. A number of these mills were built in sizes of 6.1 to 7.3 m (20 to 24 ft) in diameter and 1.5 to 1.8 m (5 to 6 ft) in length but were later abandoned because of operating and maintenance problems. Further development of autogenous grinding led to the Hardinge wet grinding mill, the Aerofall dry grinding mill, and others. A tabulation of all known autogenous and semiautogenous installations around the world was sent recently to the authors by G. J. Kushner of Koppers Metal Processing Division. In the size range of 7.3 to 9.8 m (24 to 32 ft) in diameter, it lists a total of thirty mills used in the processing of copper ores. An additional 120 units are listed in the same size range for the processing of iron ores and other minerals. The largest mills in existence are 11.1-m-diam X 4.6-m-long (36-ft-diam X 15-ft-long) mills in Minnesota, powered by 8950 kW (12,000 hp) motors and used in taconite beneficiation. It is indicative of the phenomenal growth of this technology that none of the above 150 mills was in operation prior to 1964. Grinding rates in autogenous mills are very sensitive to variations in ore breakage characteristics and even with fairly constant ore type can exhibit large fluctuations in throughput. Autogenous grinding also depends on availability of a fraction of the ore to be ground in the form of "competent" rock which can withstand to a certain degree the tumbling and impact action within the mill. If the ore is uniformly "soft", it will soon be crushed into small size particles and further grinding, which depends on the existence of large size rocks in the mill, becomes impossible. This apparently is the case with most copper ores, as discussed by Bachman, Last and Nabbs (1970) who described pilot testing of a large number of ore samples from Kennecott 's Chino Mines. Under circumstances where autogenous grinding is impractical, it is possible to realize most of its benefits by utilizing large grinding balls in place of the "competent" rock and practice what has become known in the mining industry as semiautogenous grinding. In semiautogenous grinding (SAG), a grate discharge tumbling mill is fed the product of a primary crusher or run-of-mine rock. Forged steel or alloy grinding balls, in proportions ranging from 3.10% of the total volume in the mill, are used to complement the self-grinding ability of the ore. Semiautogenous circuits can be either designed for single-stage closed-circuit grinding which produces a final product for recovery processes, or for two-stage operation in which the SAG mill product is fed to a second stage of grinding in a conventional ball mill.

Introduction The porphyry copper deposit “Borska Reka” is the biggest undeveloped deposit in the Timok Magmatic Complex (TMC). Total reserve calculated manually is 611 Mt (cut-off grade 0.3% Cu) of 0.62% Cu, 0.21 g/t Au and 1.81 g/t Ag and 869 Mt of 0.58% Cu, 0.14 g/t Au and 1.11 g/t Ag using software. But since several deep drill holes are suspended in high grade (0.7% Cu) porphyry, total reserves could exceed 1Gt. The massive sulfide is also detected in the central (12 m at 4% Cu) and the bottom of porphyry style. Deposit was discovered during geologic exploration of deeper part of the Bor copper and gold deposit, i.e. area of high sulfidation with dominant massive sulfides. During exploitation of massive sulfide, constant explorations were carried out aimed at the expansion of reserve and discovery of new ore bodies. In that way, porphyry copper mineralization was discovered without knowing in the beginning that it was different mineralization type in regard to the ones that had been already identified and exploited. Vertical extension of porphyry is 0 m up to -1000 m sea level and not contoured along plunge. In the very beginning (1976), the exploration was focused on the shallow part of porphyry. That is because block caving method of massive underground mining was not developed at that time. Up to 1999, most of activity was related to underground exploration up to level -395 m. Geographic position The Bor deposit is located close to the industrial and University town Bor, which has over 50,000 inhabitants (census made in the year 2002). Apart from the Bor Mines, industrial complex of Mining & Smelting Basin Bor (RTB) comprises also a copper smelter (installed capacity up to 160,000 tons of blister copper) and tank house, copper wire factory, copper tube factory etc. Currently, RTB Bor is under privatization process that is going to be completed by the end of 2006. Up to date, over 20 companies have bought tender documentation.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. INTRODUCTION This report describes the inspection of parts of the New Croton Aqueduct (NCA)undertaken for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP)by Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade & Douglas, Inc., (PB) in association with Montgomery Watson Engineers of New York, P.C. (MWH). Support for the inspection was provided by AFC Enterprises, Inc., under Construction Contract CRO-333, “WM-11 New Croton Aqueduct Rehabilitation and Inspection Program.” The scope of the inspection work under CRO-333 included assessing the condition of the 10.3 km (6.4 mile) long, pressurized section of NCA and inspection of shafts, head houses and blow-off structures in both the pressurized and gravity sections. The CRO-333 inspection continued investigation work begun under ContractCRO-196, which ran from 1993 to 1997. The CRO-333 inspections were conducted from November 2004 to September 2005. Background The New Croton Aqueduct was put into service in 1891 to deliver water from the Croton River Watershed in Westchester County to consumers in New York City. Figure 1 shows the location plan of Croton Water Supply System. The design flow into Jerome Park Reservoir was 12.7 m3/s (290 mgd) and into the135th Street Gate House, further south, was 10.9 m3/s (250 mgd). The NCA has been operated as a gravity conduit from Croton Lake to Gate House No. 1, just north of Jerome Park Reservoir, since its original construction. The length from Gate House No. 1to 135th Street, which includes a major siphon under the Harlem River, has been operated under pressure. Croton Lake gate house, the north end of the alignment lies at Station 4+75; Shaft 33, the south end of the alignment lies at Station 1628+05. The diameter of the tunnel is 3.2 m (10.5 ft) in the siphon and 3.7 m (12.3 ft) in the Bronx and Manhattan sections. The pressurized sections, constructed in rock, consist of a brick lining surrounded by a mortared and grouted rubble backing. Figure 2depicts a typical tunnel cross section. "IntroductionThe coal deposits, all of lignite rank, of economic interest in Saskatchewan are associated with the Ravenscrag Formation (Paleocene). Several Cretaceous formations have less significant lignite accumulations (Broughton, Irvine and W'hitaker, 1974). The Swan River Group (lower Cretaceous) and Judith River Formation (upper Cretaceous) have the only coalbearing strata in the shallow subsurface of central Saskatchewan. The Swan River Group coalfield is relatively small and underlies only 15 sq km of the surface approximately 40 km south of La Ronge, Saskatchewan. An estimated 36 billion short tons are within 45 m of the surface. No reserve estimates are known to have been calculated for the coal-bearing Judith River Formation exposed at the surface in the vicinity of the South Saskatchewan River valley in west-central Saskatchewan. Although no coalfields have been delineated, lignite beds up to 1.8 m thick have been intersected in test holes. The coal-bearing upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary strata of the northern Williston Basin extends the full width of southern Saskatchewan for 650 km, and from the United States border 120 km north to 50° latitude (Fig. 1). Only the coalfields of the Ravenscrag Formation, because of their economic interest, will be considered further. There are four major coalfields. They are, from east to west: Estevan, Willow Bunch, Wood Mountain and Shaunavon (Cypress) coalfields. Cumulative lignite seam thickness for each basin is 10 -15 m (Figs. 2 and 3). The origin of each coal basin, resource calculations, seam stratigraphy, and mining activity are discussed. Regional Setting The Williston Basin is an ellipsoidal depression in the Precambrian basement, centered in western North Dakota and marginal to the exposed craton of northern Saskatchewan and central Manitoba (Fig. 1). The sediments of the basin range from Cambrian to Pleistocene in age and have a maximum known thickness of 4614 min western North Dakota. A maximum of 3200 m is recorded in southern Saskatchewan. Most structural deformation is late Cretaceous to early Tertiary (Paleocene) in age, coinciding with the Laramide Orogeny. The pre-Laramide Williston Basin, with a depocenter near Williston, North Dakota, began developing during the middle Ordovician, or possibly earlier."

Management of historic tailings is a major challenge facing the mining industry and its regulators. However, through improved mineralogical and chemical characterisation of such materials the opportunity to develop better rehabilitation strategies arises. Microanalytical techniques including microscopy, mineral liberation analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allow for improved tailings characterisation – but the challenge posed by these techniques is how to use them effectively. Additionally, data sets collected by such techniques must be properly integrated, only then can they assist in the identification of the most appropriate rehabilitation strategies. A study conducted at the Old Tailings Dam (OTD) located at the Savage River Mine, Tasmania allowed for the integrated use of several microanalytical techniques to help evaluate the benefits of a shallow water cover as a potential rehabilitation strategy. Samples (n = 144) from 14 trenches and 11 boring cores (2 m maximum depth) were collected across the OTD. These were subjected to routine acid-base accounting, with a subset subjected to detailed mineralogy using a modified sulfide alteration index (SAI), X-ray diffractometry and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). In addition, representative samples (n = 6) from across the OTD were subjected to laser-ablation ICPMS to characterise the pyrite chemistry. Our results showed that tailings in the northern area submerged under a natural water cover were relatively unoxidised from approximately 1 m depth, with SAI values of 1 to 2. Tailings from the subaerial southern portion were extensively oxidised to approximately 35 cm depth (SAI = maximum 5.8), with fresher materials observed underneath (SAI = 5 to 5.8). Pyrite from across the OTD is enriched in Co, Cu and Ni. Through the integrated application of microanalytical tools, we determined that establishing a water cover of at least 1.5 m depth across the OTD is a suitable rehabilitation option for this historic site. "Standardization of the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) method for gold in cyanide solutions was undertaken to provide a more sensitive method to quantify the gold content than the atomic absorption method standardized in 1994 (E1600). The gold concentration range covered is from 0.001 mg/L Au - 0.3 mg/L Au (0.00005 toz/t Au – 0.009 toz/t Au). Interlaboratory testing was carried out with the assistance of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) International on two committees to determine the within laboratory and between laboratory reproducibility. Three barren solutions from metallurgical operations were measured in triplicate to satisfy statistical requirements for Committee E1 on Analytical Chemistry of Metals, Ores and Related Materials. A synthetically prepared matrix representing the metallurgical processing solutions was used to prepare Youden pairs to satisfy the requirements of Committee D19 on Water. Results of the standardization program are presented. INTRODUCTION Analysis of process solutions for gold concentration requires accurate and sensitive analytical methods in order to manage process control and metallurgical accounting. Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) has been the work horse of the assay lab for this duty for decades. In 1994 the FAAS standard method was approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) (1). Six process solutions were collected and preserved by measuring the pH and adjusting to greater than pH 10, if necessary. Duplicate solutions were provided to eight laboratories in random order for analysis by FAAS covering the gold concentration range of 0.19 µg/mL (0.006 toz/t.) to 10.7 µg/mL (0.312 toz/t). A high precision method was used, which involved bracketing the sample with the higher and lower standards nearest to its concentration repeating readings three times and averaging the results. The optimum precision for the FAAS gold method was found to be at the 1.00 µg/mL (0.029 toz/t) and lower scope limit 0.3 µg/mL (0.009 toz/t) gold concentration. Since tailings solutions typically have concentrations below the lower scope limit, use of ICPMS was developed at Newmont USA Limited (Newmont) to assay the lower range solutions."

Results of the R/V Sonne Cruise (Edison) to the Tabar-Feni Arc from March 11 to April 5, 1994, a joint German-Canadian research cruise aboard the vessel R/V Sonne, undertook detailed mapping of the Tabar-Feni island chain, Papua New Guinea. The Tabar-Feni chain is host to several large porphyry stocks and epithermal gold deposits, including the giant Ladolam gold deposit on the island of Lihir (minimum 19 million oz. Au). The principal objective of the cruise was to map the seafloor in the vicinity of recently active alkaline volcanic islands in the Tabar-Feni chain and to characterize the tectonic setting of large high-level porphyry and epithermal gold deposits in the region. Additional work was carried out on shallow-water hot springs associated with mineralized geothermal systems on the volcanic islands. Complete sets of 1:50,000 scale (20-m contour) maps of the seafloor were produced for each of the four island groups (Feni, Tanga, Lihir, Tabar). The Lihir group was the most active and the most interesting. At least 4 (and probably 6 or 7), previously unknown volcanic cones were discovered within about 10 miles south of Lihir. The volcanoes are clearly very young and appear to have erupted along extensional faults produced by regional plate rotation. This recent volcanic activity appears to reflect recent forearc extension and represents the southward propagation of volcanic activity towards New Ireland. One volcanic cone at 1,490 m water depth is hydrothermally active, with very large areas of diffuse venting (100-200 m across), densely populated by beds of giant clams (probably calyptogena). Other vent-specific fauna are also present, including crabs, snails, sulfide worms, scale worms, limpettes, etc. The clam beds sit on a crust of hydrothermally baked and indurated, sulfidic, hyaloclastite-rich muds. The mineralization consists mainly of fine-grained disseminated pyrite and amorphous Fe-sulfides. A second, much larger cone at a depth of 1,070 m is capped by massive vesicular lavas which are intensely fractured and mineralized. SUMMARY La Granja copper deposit, in terms of volume, is among the five largest deposits in the world and represents reserves of three thousand million tones. The field consists of a 40 m. thick layer of copper lying over the secondary ore and further down the primary copper. The flotation process has indicated a recovery rate of 88 to 90 percent and concentrates of 27 to 32 percent of copper. The acid leaching process of low grade ore produces financially acceptable results. To carry out the project, it is necessary to build long distance pipelines and a port. Both the Feasibility Study and the Environmental Impact Study on the project have been approved by the Peruvian government. INTRODUCTION La Granja is located in the district of Querecoto, province of Chota, in the department of Cajamarca, in the Northwest of the country (Figure 1). Geographically it is situated on the eastern slopes of the Andean mountains at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,700 m.a.s.1. (Figure 1). The site is an 8 hour car ride from the city of Chiclayo, capital of the department. The first 60 km. are over a paved road and the remaining distance is over a narrow hard dirt road. The copper porphyry of La Granja was discovered between 1969 to 1971 during some geochemical prospecting activities carried out by the State mining institution, Ingeomin (currently Ingemmet). From 1978 to 1982, Ingemmet continued with its geochemical and geophysical studies supported by a German technical assistance program. A total of 19 bore- holes were drilled (5,814 m.) and a 90 m. long tunnel made. This study calculated reserves of 175 million MT. In 1993, Minero Peru drew up a technical-financial study based on the above studies and proposed a 12 year extraction operating program: 20,000 MT daily using the leaching process, followed by 13 years of operation using the flotation process with the same daily volumes.
