"This paper presents an analysis of preliminary tests on the effect of in-situ and operating parameters on fragmentation of coal using a specially designed unique automated rotary coal cutting simulator (ARCCS). In these tests coal blocks with an approximate dimension of 18 in. x 15 in. x 6 in. (45.7 cm x 38.l cm x 15.2 cm) were first. subjected to confining pressures, equivalent to in-situ conditions. Such. blocks were then cut by the cutting head of the ARCCS, thus simulating the action of the continuous miner in underground coal mining. During the tests under a particular set of in-situ and operating parameters a number of other parameters such as 1) penetration of bit into coal, 2) penetration resistance (thrust and cutting pressures), 3) rotating velocity of cutting head, and 4) acoustic emission activity in the coal block were monitored. After each cutting cycle the fractured surfaces were photographed and a velocity survey was conducted by using a sonic technique. At the end of each experiment the cutting paths of the bits in coal were photographed using an optical microscope with a camera attached to it. Furthermore, the coal fragments were collected in bags using a vacuum cleaner. These fragments were then sieved for size distribution analysis. The results of the preliminary tests indicated that underground coal cutting can be simulated in the laboratory and the effects of the important parameters, i.e. operating and in-situ parameters, can be studied successfully. INTRODUCTIONThe continuous-mining machines which were introduced in the 1950's now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners, which were designed for increased productivity, have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. As a result, the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted to enforce on the coal operators that the airborne respirable dust not exceed 2 mg/m3, and was intended to reduce the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis. This plus the other aspects of the legislation and the subsequent monitoring and enforcement by MSHA made it very imperative that the coal operators provide a relatively healthier and safer working environment for the coal miners. Since 1970, the Federal government has paid over 11.7 billion dollars to more than 470,000 miners with coal workers pneumoconiosis and their survivors (1). These regulations, coupled with the assessment of the continuing burden on miners, the mining industry and taxpayers appear to have provided an impetus for the mining .community towards comprehending the different parameters that influence dust generation and entrainment."

This paper describes model-scale bench blasts on mortar blocks with distorted drill hole patterns, done in 2013–2014 at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. The main aim of the project is to see if the fragmentation from and the crack development behind blasts with and without drill hole deviations differ significantly.The dimensions of the test blocks were 660 × 280 × 210 mm (L × W × H). They were mounted inside a yoke that allows the blast waves to escape (see Figure 1). Three rows in each block were shot row by row with a nominal pattern of B × S = 70 × 95 mm. The same nominal delay 73 µs (ie 1 ms per m burden) between holes was used throughout. Blocks with holes of stochastic collar position errors (variations in burden or in burden and spacing but constant row volume) and systematically shifted collar positions (blasts with staggered pattern) were shot. The results were compared to reference blocks without collar deviations.Apart from the sieving analysis, the remaining bench faces were measured with a stereo-photogrammetric method and horizontal roughness profiles for each row were constructed. Sawing slabs from block remains after the third row and use of dye penetrant allowed the study of internal blast damage.The analysis showed that none of the changes in borehole collaring had a significant effect on the sieving curve (median). The sieving results confirm earlier findings though that the fragmentation gets finer with the number of rows shot, implying that blast damage from earlier rows has an influence on the blasting results. The tests demonstrated that the nequiv (equivalent n-value) has increased ten per cent by shooting staggered pattern and decreased by seven per cent by pattern with burden and spacing errors. For the rest of the patterns, the nequiv was roughly the same.The surface roughness investigation showed that a smooth surface was achieved by the staggered pattern. The other deviations patterns did not show a clear trend.The internal blast damage, which was measured in the remaining part of blocks, showed that out of eleven, four crack families seemed to be most affected by blasting. "The Quintette Coal Limited property is located in the north east coal area of British Columbia. A basic agreement with the Japanese steel industry was ex ecuted on January 27, 1981 for the sale of 69.5 million tonnes of Quintette metallurgical coal over a 14.5-year period. This contract period can be extended by Jive years by mutual agree ment. Sale agreements have also been signed for the sale of 19.4 million tonnes of oxidized coal over a 15-year period. Work started on site development in the late summer of 1981, and at present, two of the four eventual pits-the McConkey and Frame-are under development. The pits are currently in a pres/ripping phase. These pits are notable for the stripping volumes that have to be removed from relatively small pit areas. in order to provide for the required detailed rapid short-range planning of these pits, engineering will be computerized, as will the truck dispatch system. The mining area lies 21.1 km from the plant site by road and the transport of raw coal LO the plant is by means of a highspeed conveyor system which has a total length of 13.4 km with a vertical drop of 740 m. The surface plant facility was designed on a modularized basis to facilitate maintenance, and is designed to enable the use ofgravity flow ofraw coal and heavy media in the plant to minimize the use of pumps. The construction of the plant and mine site facilities is on-going, and the first coal production is scheduled for early December 1983. Introduction Quintette Coal Limited is a Canadian company incorporated in the province of British Columbia in 1971. Denison Mines Limited is the manager of Quintette's activities. Equity in Quintette Coal Limited is held by several shareholders, with interests as follows: Denison Mines 'Limited, 500Jo; Charbonnages de France International S.A., 120Jo; and Japanese interest, 38%. The project will develop almost 120 million tonnes of coal for marketing during its first 20 years of production. All of the planned production tonnage has been committed to Japanese markets. Most of the coal will be metallurgical grade, and the remainder will be a high-quality thermal coal. The Mcconkey and Frame pits, which will initially provide the mine's production, will commence production in early December 1983 and will, in 1985, reach the full annual production of 5 million tonnes clean metallurgical coal and 1,380,000 tonnes of clean thermal coal."

The tremendous growth in grinding mill size and horsepower during the 70s demanded advancements in gear cutting technology and equipment for the 80s. A new standard in gear cutting machines is now used to generate-cut large open gear sets to over 12.2 m (40 ft) in diameter at an AGMA quality level much higher than the accepted levels a short five years ago. The precision of the resulting gear set assures maximum tooth contact with the resultant longer gear set life.

A Joint Venture between Hope Bay Gold Corporation and Miramar Mining Corporation recently acquired the Hope Bay project in Nunavut, which represents the first discovery of a major new Archean greenstone gold belt in Canada since the discovery of Hemlo in 1982 and the Yellowknife belt in 1938. Located some 685 km North of Yellowknife, the Hope Bay Belt is geologically comparable to the other major gold producing regions of Canada. The initial discovery of gold mineralization in 1992 led BHP to acquire virtually all of the Hope Bay belt. Over the subsequent 6 years, BHP expended C$85 million on exploration, including 180,000 meters of drilling, 2.3km of underground workings and a 27,000 tonne bulk sample, as well as extensive environmental and economic studies. Hope Bay Gold and Miramar acquired the Hope Bay property in December 1999 for a cost of C$27 million, considerably less than the C$85 million spent by BHP in exploring the property. They both hold 50% of the project, and share expenses equally. Hope Bay Gold is the manager of all exploration phases and Miramar will manage feasibility, construction and operations. The Hope Bay Joint Venture controls 1,117 sq. km., covering virtually the entire 80 km long Hope Bay and adjacent Elu greenstone belts. We believe that Hope Bay is one of the best-undeveloped gold projects in Canada. Work to date has defined a global resource in excess of three million ounces of gold in three principal deposits, each of which is open to extension along strike and to depth. A C$17 million work program for year 2000 focused on advancing a significant portion of the gold resource to a measured and indicated category. This will provide the basis for initiation of a feasibility study in 2001. The 2000 drill program was one of the largest undertaken in Canada last year, and is a clear indication of our confidence that Hope Bay will develop into a major gold producing district. The majority of the potential mineable areas known to date lie within 350m of surface and would be accessed through a combination of open pit and declines. Currently, development of a 1,800 to 2,000 tpd gold mine producing in excess of 300,000 ounces of gold per year at cash costs below $US200 per ounce is envisioned. In addition, the exploration potential on the 80 km gold belt at Hope Bay is clearly tremendous.

"In this study, rare earth elements were recovered from bastnasite concentrate and waste fluorescent lamp phosphors using supercritical carbon dioxide extraction with a nitric acid/tributyl phosphate adduct. Several pretreatment methods were used to alter the crystal structure of the source materials, and thus improve rare earth element recovery. Pretreatment methods included 1) dry roasting of the source material at 730oC, 2) decomposition with 50% sodium hydroxide solution at 150oC for 4 hours, and 3) decomposition with 12 M sulfuric acid at 300oC for 4 hours. Treated and untreated samples underwent supercritical extraction at 24 MPa and 65oC for 1 hour. Untreated bastnasite and phosphor samples showed <10% rare earth element recovery, but sodium hydroxide digestion resulted in >60% recovery for most rare earth elements. Dry roasting of the bastnasite concentrate was also effective, resulting in >60% recovery for cerium.INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REEs) consist of the 15 lanthanides, scandium, and yttrium. Scandium and yttrium are included because they are in the same group as lanthanum, appear in many of the same ore deposits as the rest of the lanthanides, and exhibit many similar chemical properties. REEs are used in a wide array of applications including electronics, magnets, catalysts, glass, and solid-state lighting (Xie, Zhang, Dreisinger, & Doyle, 2014). Because of China’s continued dominance of worldwide REE production, the United States Department of Energy has sought to diversify domestic supplies of REEs (United States Department of Energy, 2011). A key part of this strategy is the development of improved extraction methods for both ores and recycled sources.Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is a promising technology for extraction and separation of rare earth elements. Contact with an acid adduct dissolved in supercritical carbon dioxide allows for the rapid extraction of REEs from solid matrices. Supercritical CO2 has several potentially useful properties as a solvent, including high diffusivity and the ability to tune solvation properties by adjusting pressure. Such tunability may have applications in separating the REEs once they have been extracted from the solid phase. Tributyl phosphate/nitric acid adducts (TBP:HNO3) are a particularly promising class of adducts for SFE extraction of rare earth elements. Using TBP:HNO3 adducts in supercritical CO2, several researchers have successfully extracted REEs from their oxides (Wuhua, Pijia, & Yongjun, 2010; Zhu, Duan, Xu, & Zhu, 2009). However, there is a complication in applying this technique to many types of ores and recycled sources: REEs are often locked in refractory minerals which are resistant to acid attack, resulting in limited recovery in supercritical extraction."

In 1938 , the Bureau of Mines cooperated with Subcommittee XV on Plasticity and Swelling of Coal ( C. C. Russell , chairman ) , of Committee D-5 on Coal and Coke , A.S.T.M. , by testing various methods for determining expansion and plastic properties of a series of coals of widely different coking properties . One of the tests made by the Bureau was the British Standard Method for the Crucible Swelling Test for Coal.5/ Briefly , this swelling test consists in heating 1 gram of pulverized coal in a silica crucible over a gas flame under prescribed conditions to form a coke button which is compared in size and shape with a series of standard profiles numbered 1 to 9. These profiles are intended to cover the size and shape of buttons obtained from coals covering a wide range in plastic properties .. The number of the standard profile with which the maximum cross -sectional area of the button most nearly corresponds is recorded as the swelling index . Although the swelling test showed poor relationships with the various tests that were used for measuring expansion or contraction of coal during carbonization , it gave indications of having value in measuring free - swelling and caking properties of coals when burned on fuel beds . An opportunity to investigate this occurred when an engineer of an eastern public utility 'company reported pronounced differences in burning characteristics on grates of various shipments of Pocahontas coal . Some of these coals gave trouble by swelling 'excessively and clogging the grates . Samples were ob- · tained , and it was found that the troublesome coals gave decidedly higher free -swelling numbers than did the coals that performed satisfactorily . Also , it was found that the free - swelling index test gave better differentiation between coals than could be obtained from the coke buttons from the · ´`standard volatile -matter test or from agglutinating - value results . The results of the free - swelling tests were considered by the Subcommittee on Plasticity and Swelling , and a special group of the subcommittee , under the chairmanship of R. A. Sherman , was delegated to study the test method . Ostborg , Limbacher , and Sherman , ofthe Battelle Memorial Institute , ' investigated the various factors affecting the test and found that the swelling index was a good indication of the suitability of coal for performance on residential -type stokers from the standpoint of the coking characteristics of the coal . Data were presented also showing that the indexes wer helpful in the selection of coal for industrial underfeed stokers .

"Anglo American operates 18 Weir GEHO piston diaphragm pumps (PD) in the two pump stations of the 52-km (32-mile) long Minas Rio iron ore concentrate pipeline. The pipeline is designed to transport 26.5 Mt/a (29.2 million stpy) of concentrate from the mine to the export terminal at the coast.During the commissioning of the pipeline in the fall of 2014, high pressure pulsation levels were experienced, with peak-to-peak levels as high as 20 bar. Based on pressure readings it was concluded that hydraulic resonances were present in the system, which were excited by the third and sixth harmonic of the flow pulsation generated by the pumps.Based on this observation, Weir Minerals Netherlands, manufacturer of GEHO PD slurry pumps, recommended installing a phase shift controller that controls the phase shift between the crankshafts of the individual pumps, thereby minimizing the effect of the hydraulic resonances.GEHO piston diaphragm pumps and pressure pulsation analysisPiston diaphragm pumps are used worldwide to transport abrasive and/or aggressive slurries against high discharge pressures in the mining, mineral processing and power industries. The basic operating principle of a piston diaphragm pump is shown in Fig. 1.A crankshaft is driven by an external electric motor via a gearbox. The crank mechanism transfers the rotating motion of the crankshaft into a reciprocating motion of the piston. The piston displaces a hydraulic fluid, called the propeling liquid, which displaces an elastic rubber diaphragm. When the piston moves to the right, the pressure in the pump chamber drops below the suction pressure and the nonreturn valve on the suction side will open, allowing the pumped fluid to flow into the pump chamber. When the piston moves to the left, the fluid is compressed, and when the pump chamber pressure rises above the pipeline pressure, the nonreturn valve on the discharge side will open allowing a displacement of fluid into the discharge line. The main objective of the diaphragm is to isolate the piston and the drive mechanism from the abrasive and/or aggressive fluid and create a hermetic seal between the pumped fluid and the ambient environment. Piston diaphragm pumps as shown in Fig. 1 are among the largest positive displacement pumps in the world and have been produced with stroke volumes of up to 100 L (26 gal) per pump chamber for flow rates up to 800 m3/h, discharge pressures up to 250 bar and hydraulic outputs over 2 MW per unit (van Rijswick et al., 2010)."

"PROJECT OVERVIEW Crossrail, Europe’s largest construction project, will increase London’s transportation capacity by 10% when it opens in 2018. The Crossrail scheme is a combination of surface and underground railway that stretches 118km east-west through central London from Reading, Berkshire and Heathrow airport in the west to Shenfield, Essex and Abbey Wood in the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Bexley in the east. Crossrail will serve 40 stations, ten of which are new, and bring 1.5 million people within 45 minutes commuting distance of London’s key central business districts. 21km of the Crossrail route comprises twin-tunnels beneath the heart of central London. It is the central section of the route, and the challenges that had to be overcome to construct its tunnels under the historic capital that forms the subject of this paper. The route of the Crossrail tunnels can be seen in Figure 1. These tunnels weave their way through the city’s underground landscape, linking eight new underground stations which connect to the existing London Underground network, providing interchanges with nine existing lines as well as the National Rail and Docklands Light Railway networks.Crossrail began construction of enabling works in May 2009 and launched the first of eight tunnel boring machines (TBMs) in May 2012. 42km of major tunneling work was completed in May 2015, and included 11km of sprayed concrete lined tunnels at the five mined stations (Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel) in addition to the bored tunnel sections. The remaining three sub-surface stations at Paddington, Canary Wharf and Woolwich were constructed as large open boxes prior to the TBMs passing through. Crossrail, Ltd. is a special purpose company formed by the project’s joint sponsors, Transport for London and the Department for Transport, to manage design, construction and commissioning of the project. In 2009, Crossrail engaged Bechtel Ltd. as its delivery partner and a joint venture, Transcend (comprised of CH2M, AECOM and the Nichols Group), as its programme partner. The project is being managed by an integrated programme management team which is staffed by Crossrail and its partners. The railway, when opened, will be operated by Rail for London. With tunneling completed in accordance with the project’s master control schedule, the new railway is scheduled to commence dynamic testing in late 2017, with a phased opening of the tunneled sections and stations through Central London in 2018."

Rio Tinto’s Hunter Valley Operations is a large open pit coalmine situated in the heart of the Hunter Valley in Australia. The Riverview West Pit has faced increasing production challenges in recent times due to decreasing dragline strike lengths and increasing environmental constraints on vibration, overpressure and fume generation. Conventional mining techniques would involve five to six production blasts per strip to recover multiple coal seams. Each blast event carries the risk of exceeding the strict environmental requirements. By working collaboratively with Orica, it was realised that the blasting method known as Stratablast™, in conjunction with advanced computer modelling techniques, could provide productivity gains whilst simultaneously providing more control over the environmental effects and the impact on nearby infrastructure.As a result of this change, the number of blasts per strip was reduced to one, with the implication that a great deal of care and forethought was needed to manage the increased challenge posed by multiple constraints in the proposed mining area. This innovative approach of combining throw and stand-up blasts allowed the extraction of all major coal seams in a single pass blast event. The blasts were initially designed with a large factor of safety to stay within environmental limits as they were over 1.1 km in strike length, with more than 800 holes and with a total charge weight of about 1000 t of bulk explosives. Furthermore, there were conflicting priorities around the desired blast outcomes. So far, 11 such blasts have been designed and successfully fired. After each blast, innovative design changes have been iteratively implemented to provide further control over environmental impacts, whilst continuing to improve productivity. As a result of these changes, blasts have progressively increased in complexity with the inclusion of features such as damage zones, mid-splitting, time gaps and different directions of firing. The consequence of this complexity is that the blast duration can be as long as 28 seconds to accommodate all components of the blast.This project has increased the productivity of the Riverview West Pit through blast design improvements and allowed the environmental impacts to be managed with far more control and predictability than would have been possible under a conventional blasting regime. Thirteen holes totalling 3200m were surveyed using a downhole time domain Geonics EM37 system at the 830 metre level within the CSA Mine, Cobar, New South Wales, in order to search for blind, electrically conductive sulphides at some distance from exploration drillholes. A significant off-hole conductor was detected in only one drillhole.Geophysical modelling and interpretation of the survey results indicated that this off-hole conductor was caused by a sulphide lens 30 metres from the drillhole at a hole depth of 220 metres.

MANY of the factors influencing the creep behavior of ferrous alloys have been investigated and reported upon in the literature, including such variables as grain size, steelmaking practice, nature and stability of the microstructure, and the effect of alloying elements in steels. However, with respect to the latter, the microstructures involved are usually heterogeneous and as a result the effect of the addition is related to its effects on the various phases present in the microstructure. In the instances where this structure consists of ferrite and carbide, the behavior of the alloy addition will be related to its action in strengthening ferrite and in opposing temperature softening of ferrite as well as coalescence of carbide. The present paper is the third in a series comprising a comprehensive review of investigations on the properties of iron binary alloys. 1.2 Its purpose is to describe the results of isolating one microstructural phase, namely ferrite, and studying its creep characteristics in both the unalloyed and alloyed conditions. This should aid in establishing to a large degree the importance of ferrite in the creep behavior of steels consisting of the previously mentioned ferrite-carbide aggregate. REVIEW OF PREVIOUS WORK In view of the fact that the present investigation deals only with the effects of silicon, manganese, chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and cobalt, and to a certain extent with the effects of carbon, the review of previous literature will be confined to these elements. Practically no references were encountered dealing with the influence of these elements on the creep characteristics of the isolated phase. However, various contributions have dealt with the creep behavior of low-carbon steels alloyed with the elements under consideration. A particularly concise review in this respect is given by Bullens (Battelle)3 and much of this material has been drawn upon. The definite improvement in creep resistance and high-temperature strength conferred by molybdenum is well known. Published suggestions by the A.S.M.E.4 permit of an increase of some 2000 to 5000 lb. per sq. in. in permissible design loads over a temperature range from 650° to 1000°F. as a consequence of additions of 0.40 to o.60 per cent of this element in carbon steels of the order of o.25 to o.35 per cent carbon content. Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.5 has published data showing the pronounced increase in stress necessary to cause one per cent creep per 10,000 hr. when additions of 0.5 or 1 per cent molybdenum are made to a plain carbon steel. These data apply to temperatures over a range from 800° to 1000°F.

There is a great number of asbestos deposits in the USSR. Some of them are quite large ones. The main deposits of chrysotile asbestos can be seen in the sketch map (fig. 1). Bazhenovo deposit situated in Sverdlovsk region is the largest of them. It is on mining operations since year 1889. Systematical studies of asbestos deposits were begun from the first years of Soviet Government and connected with the names of K.E. Tarasov, P. M. Tatarinov, B. J. Merenkov, N.D. Sobolev, F. V. Syromjatnikov, V. N. Lodochnikov, V.P. Petrov, V.P. Eremeev, L.A. Sokolova, V. R. Artemov, V.F. Dybkov and many others. This investigations served the USSR to be one of the most important producers of asbestos in the world. In the limits of the report a characteristic of the main asbestos deposits of the USSR may be done in general outline, from the point of view of their genesis, and in order to show their common features and differences that must be taken into account for forecasting, exploration, and mining of asbestos. All chrysotile asbestos deposits of the USSR were formed of magnesium rock as a result of comparatively lower-grade temperature hydrothermal alteration and free crystallization of fibrous chrysotile in open cavities that served as catalyst As a matter of fact an important mineral for industry is not chrysotile in general, a widely distributed rock-forming mineral, but a long fibrous and mainly vein variety of chrysotile. It must serve for geologists as an important prospecting criteria. A geologist should search for the mineral not only places of possible chrysotile generations, but places where asbestos may be crystallized in its long fibers that could be fiberized well. The Soviet geologists distinguish two groups of chrysotile-asbestos deposits: (1) related to ultrabasic rocks and (2) related to sedimentary dolomite terranes, taking into account what the maternal rock was affected by hydrothermal solutions. The largest deposits related to ultrabasite. The largest deposits in dolomite are small ones but their asbestos contains almost no iron. So much asbestos is a better filler into insulating plastics. There is a few types of asbestos deposits in the limits of the ultrabasic group. The largest of them is a Bazhenovo type which the deposits of Urals are attributed, and Bazhenovo deposits is the first instance. The Bazhenovo type is characterized by the most complete zonality in disposition of various kinds of asbestization. This type of deposits is practically the only one to be in working now in the USSR.

For many pu@oses uniform strength is desired over a long temperature range, coupled to a band of softness at the hot end for easy shaping. Various types of material fulfill such a requirement to different degrees, depending on the regularity of their atomic structure. In long-chain polymers and vitreous glasses the irregular structure leads to a steep temperature dependence of deformation resistance and the temperature band between the hard and brittle condition and the soft condition is only about 100 C. In crystals and especially metals the atomically regular structure leads to a much smaller sensitivity over a wide temperature band, thus approaching the ideal behavim. The reason for this insensitivity is that the regular crystalline structure deforms by the movement of dislocations and the elastic interactions of dislocations in- PLASTICS, GLASSES, AND CRYSTALS The ease or otherwise of deformation varies with temperature much more in some substances than in others. This is an important matter when service over a wide temperature range is needed, especially volve energies of several hundred electron volts compared with which the energy of thermal agitation is insignificant. However, temperature affects a metal&apos;s defmmation resistance through its influence on the annealing, m coarsening, of the three-dimensional dislocation network. This coarsening is a phenomenon very similar to grain growth and ideas about grain growth can be applied to it. Taking into account also the temperature dependence of the glide resistance from alloying additions, a reasonable account can be given of the overall effect of temperature on deformation strength and of stress and grain size on deformation rake. Special structures me described. some arising from these ideas and as yet untried, which may benefit metals and polymers but not ni-treous glasses. when in addition a degree of softness suitable for shaping is required at some stage. It would be nice if one could write on this subject in as much detail about plastics, glasses, and so forth, as about metals, but there has been far more study of this matter in metals than in other substances, which is one reason why most of this paper concerns metals. However, in Fig. 1 there are shown the deformation strengths of several nonmetallic substances as a function of temperature. Underground room-and-pillar mining operations in the Warrior Coal Field in Alabama frequently suffer instability due to soft floors and thinly-laminated immediate roofs. This investigation concerns a mine that was experiencing ground-control problems with weak floor conditions. Several roof falls occurred locally, and as much as 0.6 m (2 ft) of floor heaves have been experienced. The paper presents the results of comprehensive analyses conducted on floor heave, roof sagging, pillar- penetration and floor bearing capacity using instrumentation and numerical modeling.

INTEREST in the various products of the austenite eutectoid transformation in iron-carbon alloys, particularly as produced by the isothermal sub-critical techniques introduced by Davenport and Bain,1 has resulted in the application of similar heat treatments to other eutectoid transformations. Studies2.3.4 of the beta copper-aluminum alloy eutectoid transformation revealed microstructures very similar to those found in iron-carbon alloys. Investigations5,6 of the kappa phase in the copper-silicon alloy system have established the eutectoid type transformation of this phase into terminal alpha and intermediate gamma phases. This transformation has been reported&apos; as forming a eutectoid type structure in a very sluggish manner by a long time isothermal treatment. The purpose of the present investigation is to study the products of the kappa eutectoid transformation as affected by transformation temperatures by means of microscopic and hardness methods. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS The copper-silicon alloy equilibrium diagram is shown in Fig I. The kappa field converges to a minimum silicon solubility at the eutectoid composition and all other completely kappa alloys are hypereutectoid. Thus, kappa decomposition involves first the proeutectoid precipitation of gamma, followed by the eutectoid transformation of a lower silicon content kappa (5.2 pct). Smith5 has indicated that alloys containing between 5.4 and 5.7 pct silicon could be hot rolled, but that the latter composition was desirable in order to permit a wider kappa temperature range. The alloy was prepared by adding Baker&apos;s commercially pure silicon to an ingot of copper-silicon alloy containing 2.34 pct silicon remaining from the investigation of Brick, Martin and Angier.7 Following the casting techniques of Krynitsky, Saunders and Stern,8 the ingot was melted under a heavy layer of dried charcoal in a clay-graphite crucible in a gas-fired pot furnace. Small lumps of silicon were held under the melt surface with a graphite rod. After the silicon had dissolved, the alloy was chill-cast and then remelted without a cover, stirred thoroughly, skimmed and poured into a preheated cast iron mold. The cast microstructure is shown in Fig 2. The casting, 10 X 4 X ¾ in., was annealed at 750°C for 21 brand furnace cooled. About 1/16 in. was milled from all surfaces. The plate was cut in half longitudinally and the bottom half analyzed by A.S.T.M. methods.9 The composition by weight was as follows: copper 94.24 pct, silicon 5.56 pct, iron 0.11 pct.
