AT a recent meeting of the Utah Section. A.I.M.E., P. D. Nielson, general plant superintendent of the new Geneva steel plant at Provo, Utah, spoke on "General Operations of the Geneva Plant." Mr. Nielson explained that the plant was located at Provo, Utah, on account of railroad facilities, the proximity of coal, iron, and limestone, and the nearness of water for operating the plant. Water probably was the most important item in making the decision.

The radio remote controlled option is composed of a Base Station to program, calibrate and initiate the EDDs plus a Blasting Box to send commands to the Base Station. High methane content of the medium volatile metallurgical coal mined from the Coal Basin mines causes very difficult mining conditions. Rapid desorption into the mine ventilation system limits coal production, requires huge fresh air quantities and creates mine safety problems. In workings deeper than 2000 ft (600m) gassy coal and heavy cover create outbursting conditions. Cross-measure methane drainage has reduced ventilation requirements on advancing faces, but degasifica- tion of virgin coal is needed to improve mining Conditions.

The paper describes a uranium by-product recovery plant operating within a copper leach, solvent extraction, and electrowinning circuit. The operation is unique because it is integrated into the main process stream of the copper circuit The plant processes 1408 m3/h of copper solutions containing about 10 mg/L of uranium. Hanging Lake Joint Venture recently excavated two conventional 12.8 m (42 foot) diameter highway tunnels in the difficult ground conditions of Glenwood Canyon, Colorado. This paper outlines the type and success of the various Controlled Blasting Techniques that were used to minimize overbreak in the portal and tunnel excavations. The different Smoothwall and Cushion Charge loads used in the different ground types are described in detail. Delay Timing and Drilling Pattern variations are also discussed.

He is also known in the Institute as a "doer" for his active participation in the affairs of the Petroleum Division and for his leadership in the formation of the present Gulf Coast Section, A.I.M.E.

The Lady Loretta silver-lead-zinc deposit lies north of Mount Isa in folded and faulted Proterozoic carbonate sediments. The deposit was discovered in the late 1960's as a result of a soil geochemical survey. Subsequent surface drilling outlined mineralisation folded into a synclinal structure extending to a depth of 460 m and containing exceptionally high grades within the keel of the syncline. Pancontinental Mining Limited and Outokumpu Oy of Finland acquired the property in 1985.

Copper working in the Messina district E. O. M. HANISCH. B.A. (Pretoria) (Visitor) By reference to the available literature, an account is given of the manufacture of metal ingots by the Messina copper workers. These workers are thought to have been Balemba tribesmen, of the Musina Clan, who came from across the lebombo Mountains. A description is given of their methods of mining, smelting, and casting, and of the vlrious types of ingots they produced.

The thiosulfate, effects copper of concentrations of and ammonia ou the extractlon of gold from sulfide gold concentrate have been studied. The experimental results showed that it is possible to reduce thiosulfate concentration. Above 95% of gold extraction was obtained in O. 2M thiosulfate leaching solution in two hours under the suitable conditions. Therefore, the process of washing residue was simplified, the consumption of thiosulfate and the loss of thiosulfate carried were reduced. by washing residued.
