A double crucible system was developed for I-g scale plutonium reductions. The equipment consists of an inner MgO crucible, an outer MgO crucible, and a stainless steel pressure vessel. The reduction charge is PIaced in the inner crucible and the annulus between the inner and outer crucibles is filled with a mixture of calcium and iodine. The exothermic reaction between the calcium and iodine in the annulus supplies the heat required for complete reaction of the reduction charge ana' good metal coalescence. Metal yields of 80 to 85 ,pct were obtained from I-g scale reductions and yields as high as 97.5 pct were obtained from 0.5-g scale reductions. The system was used to reduce charges containing as little as 0.1 g of Pu resulting in metal yields up to 90 Pct. THIN metal foils of highly enriched plutonium isotopes are used as targets for cross section and other measurements. The isotopes are separated in the calutrons at Oak Ridge and are very expensive to prepare. Often, only 1 or 2 g of material are available thereby emphasizing the need for a method of preparing these small quantities of metal. Procedures for 1-g scale plutonium reductions have been described, but these procedures require elaborate or expensive equipment. For example, the procedure described by Anselin et al.1 requires an inert atmosphere glovebox and induction heating equipment. The procedure described by Baker2 also uses induction heating equipment to obtain the recommended heating rates and liner temperatures. Baker's procedure also requires high purity PuF4 with very little PuO2 present. The procedure described in this paper resulted from a search for a simple and inexpensive method for making 1-g scale plutonium reductions. EXPERIMENTAL Equipment. The equipment required for the double crucible system consists of a pressure vessel, two MgO crucibles, a MgO crucible lid, and a resistance-heated, vertical crucible furnace. The crucibles were slip cast from high purity MgO and were supplied by the Coors Porcelain Co. and the Norton Co. The pressure vessel and lid were fabricated from 316 stainless steel. Materials. The PuF4 used for this study was obtained from the P1utoniu:m Metal Production Department at Rocky Flats. The PuF4 was prepared in a con- tinuous hydrofluorinator by reacting Pu02 with HF at 650°C. The isotopic composition of the plutonium was approximately 93 pct 239PU, 6 pct 240PU, and 0.5 pct 241PU. Some of this PuF, contained less than 1 pct Pu02 (Batch No. 6 and 7), while other batches contained up to 15 pct Pu02 (Batch No. 3). The chemical analyses of all the PuF4 used for this study is given in Table I. The calcium was 99 pct pure, AEC grade, and only that fraction which would pass through a 20 mesh screen was used. The I2 was USP grade re-sublimed I2 which was ground before being used. Procedure. Various charge compositions and methods for loading the double crucible system were tested. The optimum conditions for 1-g scale reductions are described below. The double crucible system was loaded as shown in Fig. 1. The outer crucible was placed in the pressure vessel and the annulus between them was filled with MgO sand. The inner crucible was placed in the outer crucible, supported by a layer of MgO sand in the bottom of the outer crucible. A mixture of 5.2 g of Ca and 25 g of I2 was placed in the annulas between the two crucibles. The upper portion of the annulas was filled with MgO sand. Next, a layer of a mixture of calcium and I, equal to 20 wt pct of the calcium and I2 used in the main charge was placed in the bottom of the inner crucible. The PuF, to be reduced was mixed with a 30 pct excess of calcium and 1 mole of I2 per mole of Pu and this mixture was placed in the inner crucible. The charge was topped with a layer of a mixture of calcium and I2 equal to 20 wt pct of the calcium and I2 used in the main charge. The pressure vessel was sealed with a flat copper gasket and was purged by alternately evacuating and filling with argon. The purge valve was closed and the vessel was placed in a vertical crucible furnace which was preheated to 950°C. The furnace was turned off after 20 min of heating and the vessel allowed to cool. Experience has shown that. this amount of heating is sufficient to assure complete reaction of the charge. The knowledge of the expected run of mine (ROM) fragmentation during the feasibility study of a green field site is essential for the design of downstream crushing and milling processes. However,the prediction of blast fragmentation can be a challenging process due to the uncertainty related to the blast design and rock mass parameters. In general,a number of possible blast designs are considered in a feasibility study,with factors such as bench height and blasthole diameter influencing the design. Rock mass parameters are normally derived from a limited number of geotechnical diamond drill cores. Although diamond drill core can provide detailed information concerning intact rock strength (unconfined compressive strength and point load),it provides limited structural information to predict the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass. The in situ block size is an essential input to the prediction of the fragmentation distribution, in particular the coarse end. This paper outlines the methodology of blast fragmentation modeling undertaken for a green field feasibility study at the Riska gold deposit in Indonesia. The favoured milling process for the feasibility study was dump leaching,with no crushing of the ore material extracted from the pit. For this reason,blast fragmentation was a critical issue to be addressed by the study. A range of blast designs were considered with bench heights and blasthole diameters ranging from 4 m to 7 m and 76 mm to 102 mm respectively. Rock mass data was obtained from 19 diamond drill cores across the deposit (total drill length approximately 2200 m). Intact rock strength was estimated from qualitative strength descriptors,while the in situ block size distribution of the rock mass was estimated from the Rock Quality Designation (RQD) of the core. The methodology of fragmentation prediction involved a number of steps including the estimation of rock mass parameters from diamond drillhole data including the estimation of the in situ block size, delineation of blast domains within the deposit,and the assessment of the impact of various blast design parameters and rock mass variation on the predicted fragmentation distribution. The modelling process for the Riska green field site highlighted the need for additional rock mass data to be collected post feasibility stage and once the development of the mine commenced.

The Similkameen mine is located about 100 miles east of Vancouver, British Columbia, and ten miles west of Princeton, where the mine personnel live. Princeton was the first town in the British Columbia interior, originally the home of Cree and Blackfoot Indians and later settled by men of the Hudson's Bay Company, miners, cattlemen, and others looking for gold. After gold, there were coal mines and then copper mines . The Granby Consolidated Mining Company, Limited, operated the Copper Mountain ore bodies from 1926 to 1930 and from 1937 to 1957, mining 34 million tons of about 170 copper ore, mainly from underground. In 1966, Newmont Mining Corporation acquired the Ingerbelle property on the west side of the Similkameen River. Newmont then purchased the assets of Granby and formed Similkameen Mining Company to develop and operate the Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies on both sides of the Similkameen River canyon. The Ingerbelle and Copper Mountain ore bodies lie within rocks composed of andesite tuffs, agglomerates, and argillites. Chalcopyrite mineralization occurs as a dissemination. Original ore reserves were estimated at approximately 75 million tons grading 0.52% copper. Mining is carried out on a three-shift, seven-day-week schedule at a rate of about 60,000 tons of ore and waste per day with four 10 cu yd P & H 1900 shovels which mine and load a fleet of 100-ton Lectra Haul trucks. Among the unique features of the design and construction of the Similkameen project was the construction of 4. 5 miles (7. 24 km) of new Trans-Provincial No. 3 highway by the company to the specifications of the British Columbia Department of Highways. The old highway traversed the Ingerbelle pit area. Along the relocated highway is a 4, 000 ft (1219 m) long berm which conceals the mine pit. This area has been replanted and now looks like the original forest scenery. Another interesting feature is that the tailings from the concentrator flow by gravity over a 1000 ft (34% m) suspension bridge, which crosses the Similkameen River canyon then passes through a tunnel to the dam site, a distance of 59,000 ft (17,980 m) to the cyclone station. The chemical reaction occurring in collection of nonmetallic minerals with amine-type collectors was early postulated by students of flotation phenomena to be metathesis between the mineral and the collector, involving exchange between the amine-bearing (aminium) ion and the cation of the mineral, and formation at the mineral surface of an oriented film of the amine salt of the mineral anion. Qualitative evidence of exchange has been obtained on several occasions at Columbia. Thus 1000 C.C. of a solution containing 495 mg of laurylamine hydrochloride was shaken 17 min. with 100 grams of barite and ground in a porcelain mill to pass a 200-mesh screen; the mixture was then set aside for 48 hr. Filtrate therefrom analyzed 476 mg. per liter of laurylamine hydrochloride. There was no substantial loss of chloride ion (78.4 mg. per liter in the original; 74 in the filtrate). No successful analyses were concluded for barium ion. Earlier, confessedly rough work with scheelite indicated a solution gain in Ca++ equivalent to about one-half the aminium ion lost. Real quantitative roof of the exchange, in the form of an established stoichiometric balance, is unknown to the authors. The data of the present paper, however, obtained from experiments designed on the basis of the exchange hypothesis, constitute strong evidence of its truth, and at the same time point the way to economic utilization of the expensive nitrogen-bearing collectors in concentration of the low-priced nonmetallic minerals. The basic postulate underlying the experiments performed was that, if the collecting reaction is of the type R+ + Y- + MX = RX + M+ + Y- where R = aminium ion, Y = the anion of the amine salt, and M and X are, respectively, the cation and anion of the mineral, the reaction should obey qualitatively the implications of the mass-action and solubility-product laws. This is to say that coating and collection should be aided by the addition to the solution of either ion (R+ or X-) of the collector-coating compound, and hindered by the addition of either of the ions M+ or y-. Experimental work comprised determination of (,) the relative solubilities of the laurylammonium salts of a variety of nonmetallic-mineral anions; and (21 the contact angles' of various minerals in solutions containing different concentrations of the postulated controlling ions. "Two recent occurrences in Western metal mines in each of which 3 men were killed due to breathing fumes from explosives, have aroused keen interest among mining men not only as to the exact cause of such accidents, but also as to possible preventive measures.In sinking the forty five degree incline Marsh *haft near Burke, Idaho, on May 13, 1920, a round of holes containing about sixty pounds of 40 per cent gelatin explosive was blasted by the night shift upon leaving at 11:30 P.M. It was customary for the night shift to leave compressed air blowers open at bottom of abaft until the compressor was shut down slightly before midnight. Presumably this was not done on the night of the lath as the fumes were so heavy in the shaft bottom on the morning of the 14th that at about 8 o'clock, Superintendent Bergen and one of the shaft men, on reaching the shaft bottom, were overcome and fell from the bucket into the sump containing about six feet of water; and when two other men went down in the bucket a few minutes later to investigate, one also fell into the sump and the other was barely able to roach the shaft collar. The three bodies were later on recovered from the sump.At 400 P.M., June 10, 1920, at the Dominion Mine, Colville, Washington, a round of 11 holes containing about fifteen pounds of 60 per cent nitro¬glycerine explosive was blasted in a fifty degree raise about fifty feet above the main tunnel level by the shift going off for the night. in this mine it was the practice not to try to blow out the fumes until just before the shift went to work the next morning, Although no work was being done on the night shift, one of the raise men, curious to ascertain the effect of the shots, about 7:45 P.M., wandered into the mine (which was a tunnel only a few hundred feet in length), and was missed by one of his companions about an hour later. When three men tried to remove the body of the inquisitive miner, two of them were also overcome; ultimately these two and the first man were removed from the point at which all were asphyxiated, which was practically at the foot of themaise."

Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard-rock and mixed-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM more than 50 years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates are higher and cutter costs are lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. Disc cutters are used on a range of tunneling equipment, from pipe jacked slurry micro-TBMs less than 1 m (3.3 ft) in diameter to 15 m (49 ft) in diameter, hard-rock boring TBMs. The geological conditions under which they are employed range from sands and gravels, with several bar of water pressure, to extremely hard, massive rock with UCS up to 420 MPa. Regardless of the type of machine or geology, one thing remains constant: changing worn out cutters is costly. When cutters must be changed in the middle of a tunnel, the contractor incurs the cost of downtime as well as the cost of refurbishing or replacing the cutters. In the case of catastrophic cutter failures, the project can be stopped completely for long periods, and the costs mount up rapidly while tunnel production is at a stand still. Catastrophic cutter failures include the occasion when hard-rock disc cutters are failed in groups (called a ?wipeout? phenomenon) and the operator fails to stop the machine, which results in severe damage to the cutterhead. The cause of this can be either an undetected failed cutter propagating damage to surrounding cutters or operator error in steering. Regardless of the cause, the resulting damage can take days or even weeks to repair. When cutters fail prematurely on EPB or slurry machines in certain geological conditions, it is impossible to evacuate the chamber and, therefore, impossible to get [ ] into the chamber to change the cutters. The solution is frequently an unplanned intervention shaft that must be sunk at great cost. The importance of being able to predict cutter life accurately, and in all geological conditions, cannot be overemphasized. For these reasons, cutters have been developed for specific machine types and sizes, as well as for specific geological operating conditions. Different size cutters are required for different size machines. For example, while 483- and 508-mm (19- and 20-in.) cutters are used on large diameter TBMs, it is impossible to employ cutters so large on a small micro-TBM. Also, the cutter must be designed for the specific geological conditions under which it will be operating. The disc cutter rings required to bore extremely hard rock are the most expensive of cutter rings. However, they provide little advantage in weaker rock formations where less expensive rings will do the job as well. It is important to choose the correct cutter for the machine and the geological conditions in order to get the best balance of cost and risk.

"The average consumption of zinc dust for purification of zinc leaching solution is more than 25 kg per tonne of electrolytic zinc. Authors proposed to remove impurities in zinc leaching solution by electrolysis instead of cementation by zinc dust. The effects of copper and arsenic on electrodeposition of cobalt in zinc sulfate solution were examined fundamentally using a potentiostat. It is observed that cobalt is easily deposited on a cathode at potentials under -480mV with arsenic. Mesh cathodes of stainless steel and lead anodes were used in a small electrolytic cell and the electrolyte was circulated through 'the electrodes during the electrolysis. The effect of electrolyte circulating rate , pH, cell temperature, current density, and concentration of copper and arsenious ions on removal of cobalt were studied. Removal of Cd and Ni are also examined.IntroductionCobalt is difficult to remove from a zinc leaching solution by a simple cementation reaction using zinc dust. However, it is easily precipitated by zinc dust with co-addition of arsenious or stibinous oxide and copper ion in practical operations(I), (2), (3). The consumption of zinc dust for purification is 16-152 kg per tonne of electrolytic zinc and 65% of this zinc dust consumption is used for cobalt purification. The average retention time for purification of cobalt is 4.5 hours (1). A more economical process for purification is desired instead of zinc dust. The mechanism of this acceleration effect of copper and arsenious oxide on removal of cobalt are explained by the authorsas follows; a galvanic cell is formed between zinc dust and copper which is precipitated firstly, and cobalt is reduced on copper as Co-As alloy by this galvanic current(2). This assumption was confirmed in experiments using a galvanic cell with a membrane( 4). The following galvanic reactions occur between zinc dust and copper precipitate; on copper cathode,2H+ + 2e -= Hz(g)2Coz+ + 2HAs02 + 6H ++ 10e -= 2CoAs + 4HzOand on zinc anode,Zn = Zn = 2+ 2e –This galvanic current becomes almost zero in a zinc sulfate solution which includes only cobalt and no arsenious oxide, and cobalt is weakly deposited on a copper cathode. Cobalt deposition requiers a high degree of cathodic polarization. However, the galvanic current flows almost constantly in an electrolyte, which includes arsenious oxide, and the cathode potential is kept at about -500mV. Cobalt is precipitated as Co-As on the cathode.The authors assumed that cobalt may be removed by electrolysis at a very low current density instead of zinc dust and the following experiments were carried out. In the first part of this paper, the fundamental experiments using a potentiostat on the behaviour of cobalt in zinc sulfate solution are described. In the second part, the results of the electrolysis are reported. Cobalt is removed by a new type of an electrolytic cell, which was desigoed to <Iccelerate the rate of deposition of cobalt. The removal of cadmium and nickel in a solution which includes cobalt and arsenic are also examined."

"Mining is one of the oldest of human occupations. The awareness of occupational illnesses associated with mining, even in ancient times, is evident from the writings of Hippocrates (460-370 BC), Pliny and Elder (AD 23-79), and Galen (AD 131-210). Georgius Agricola (1494-1535), in his De Re Metallica, refers to the diseases of miners and the need for their control through good planning and operating practices and responsible management (Schwerha, 1989). Coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP), often called Black Lung disease, is an occupational disease which results from inhalation of coal mine dust which usually contains relatively small amounts of free crystalline silica.A pneumoconiosis is best defined as the accumulation of dust in the lungs and the tissue's reaction to its presence [Lapp and Castranova, 1993]. Silicosis is the name given to the fibrotic disease of the lungs caused by the inhalation of dust containing silicon dioxide, primarily in the free crystalline form. Silicosis is the older and more well known of these mineral pneumoconioses. In contrast, CWP was not recognized as different from silicosis until the pivotal work of Collis and Gilchrist [1928].The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) still regards worker exposure to respirable aerosols in mines as the most serious health problem in mining [USBM, 1994]. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is considering recommending a reduction in the standard for occupational exposure to respirable coal mine dust from 2 mg/m3 to 1 mg/m3 [NIOSH, 1993]. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) may require new criterion for sampling procedures in the mine that would evaluate the ambient dust concentration in the mine atmosphere based on a single sample, instead of the current practice of averaging five samples (MSHA, 1992; Ramat* 1993). Several high-production longwall mining faces currently have extreme difficulty meeting the existing dust standards, and some already operate at reduced production levels to achieve mandated levels [USBM, 1993]. The importance of adequately protecting the miners from high concentrations of coal mine dust, as well as of reducing the incidence and severity of the Black Lung disease, cannot be overemphasized. The importance stems, first and foremost, from the humanitarian viewpoint and, second, from the perspective of the overall welfare of the coal industry.The histopathologic hallmark of CWP is the coal macule (Balaan, Weber and Banks, 1993). Autopsy or open lung biopsy reveals the coal macule to be an amorphous mass of coal particles, dust-laden pulmonary macrophages, reticulin, and collagen. No pathognomonic signs or symptoms identify workers with CWP. A CWP diagnosis requires that the worker experienced the appropriate dust-exposure setting (e.g., underground coal mining) and duration (usually 10 years or more) and, has the characteristic chest radiograph. Based upon the International Labour Organization (ILO, 1980) international classification, pathologists and radiologists have established case definitions for characterizing the pathology and the appearance of CWP on chest radiography (Weeks, 1993). CWP appears in two principal forms: simple, with small opacities, and complicated, with opacities larger than 10 mm in diameter. For all practical purposes, diagnosis of CWP in the living miner is wholly dependent upon the chest radiograph interpretation."

"Diesel exhaust is a major cause of large number of occupational diseases. Acute and continuous exposure to Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) can cause numerous health issues including respiratory disease, reduced lung capacity, heart disease etc. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) consider diesel engine exhaust as carcinogenic. In large underground metal and nonmetal mining operations, regulatory compliance regarding miner’s exposure to airborne particles especially DPM is a big challenge. Complex mine networks add more difficulties in controlling DPM. MSHA relies on the NIOSH 5040 method for DPM compliance. The NIOSH 5040 method is a shift average based method which inherits some limitations. Due to these inherent limitations of the NIOSH 5040 method the concept of real-time DPM monitoring is promoted in the mining industry. Several real-time DPM monitors have been used by the researchers and efforts still continues to improve their measuring techniques and understanding. Real-time monitoring of DPM is vital to gain understanding of rapid changes in the mine atmosphere. The current study highlights the advancement in real-time DPM monitoring and mainly covers a review of several studies in which DPM concentrations were measured by utilizing real-time DPM monitors. INTRODUCTION Ventilation of underground mines is an important aspect of mining operations. Mining is a continuous activity and the ventilation networks in modern mines change with extended developments. Proper understanding of the ventilation network is a key design factor of an optimum mine ventilation plan. An important task of underground mine ventilation engineers is to provide clean air with sufficient quantity to the underground miners (Khan M. U. and Gillies A.D.S. 2015). The amount of fresh air supplied to the mine should be adequate to dilute the concentrations of contaminants present in the mine atmosphere. In the United States it is estimated that diesel powered equipment is used in thousands of mining operations (Stephenson D. J. et al. 2006). Use of diesel powered equipment is an attractive option in underground mines due to its several advantages over other available alternates. Diesel engines are rugged, dependable and fuel efficient (McKinnon 1999). It is common for diesel engines in heavy duty trucks to have a life of 1.6 million kilometers (McKinnon 1999). Looking at the developments in other energy alternatives, it can be assumed that the underground mining industry will maintain its reliance on diesel powered equipment (Anon 2001). DPM is an important source of mine air contamination in many non-gassy underground mines (Khan M. U. and Gillies A.D.S. 2015). Diesel exhaust is harmful for humans. Acute and continuous exposure to diesel exhaust concentrations can cause several health issues. Some of the health diseases caused by DPM exposure are respiratory diseases, reduced lung capacity, heart disease, and lung cancer (National Research Council. 1981, Mine Safety. 2005). In addition, NIOSH regards diesel exhaust as “potential carcinogen” (Centers for Disease Control 1988) and IARC has declared that “diesel engine exhaust is carcinogenic to humans” (IARC 2012). NIOSH has also declared that the reductions in DPM exposure would reduce cancer risks (Centers for Disease Control 1988)."

How do you portray a large structurally and stratigraphically complex deposit to return a meaningful resource estimation, and produce a geological model that is useable for planning on a daily basis? The George Fisher Mine is located 22 km north of Mount Isa and forms part of XstrataÆs Zinc Group operations. It is currently a major producer of zinc, lead and silver in the region with an estimated total resource for all categories of 127 Mt at 100g/t Ag, 5.3 per cent Pb and 9.2 per cent Zn (June 2005). Production in 2005 totalled 2 647 492 wet tonnes for 317 699 kg Ag, 140 317 tonnes Pb and 230 331 tonnes Zn from underground operations. George Fisher (GF) consists of two deposits that are structurally complex on a mine scale, George Fisher North (GFN) and George Fisher South (GFS). Regional faulting has resulted in a 2 km long package of variably pyritic shale and siltstone that separates the deposits. This paper looks specifically at GFN. Distinct correlations exist between the two deposits based on stratigraphic matches; however, orebody characteristics, geometry and fault architectures differ significantly between the two. The deposits consist of multiple, sedimentary-hosted, stratiform orebodies from 2 to 25 m wide, separated by waste intervals of variable width. Each ore-waste interval is modelled as an individual geological domain. Structurally, George Fisher North (GFN) contains a series of major late-stage NE faults with dextral offset(s) of up to 130 m. Further complexity is added by NS, NW and NNE striking fault orientations that can produce either a loss or repeat of stratigraphy, local drag folding, orebody attenuation and block rotation. Due to this structural complexity and orebody offsets, domains at GFN are further divided into fault blocks (FB). The GFN model comprises eight FBs over a strike length of 1 km, all of which are modelled independently. As drilling progresses and additional resources are converted, further FBs will be added at major fault offsets to accommodate orebody and model expansion. This will be in addition to what is already a large and time-consuming data set to manage and update. For example, each FB has 18 domains each with two constraining wireframes (hanging wall and footwall). Each wireframe has several sets of point data depending on the type of data available, ie diamond drilling, mapping or interpretation points. This equates to over 1100 separate files to manage. Additional wireframes and files are also required for major structures, daily planning requirements and block model runs. In total some 1500 files are managed, updated and maintained for GFN alone. The ongoing need to expand as a business and optimise production in the current economic climate where there is a global demand for metal has led to an increase in production at GF. This has resulted in a rapidly growing data set and highlights the importance of practical and efficient modelling to achieve a meaningful resource estimate. This paper focuses on the geological modelling, modelling approaches and techniques employed for the GFN deposit.

New Gold?s New Afton mine is an 11,000 tonne per day block caving mine, located 8 km west of the city of Kamloops, British Columbia. The reserve is estimated at 52.5Mt with grades of 0.65 g/t Au and 0.93% Cu. Block caving requires a considerable amount of infrastructure development before production can begin. Each excavation had its own challenges, often further complicated by interactions with the caving stresses and fault structures. The main areas of interest were: the production crusher complex, the surface to underground infrastructure, and the footprint interaction with the faults. The ore zone at New Afton is bounded by two very weak fault zones, with large fault affected areas and associated splays. The resulting rock mass rating (RMR) is 35-50, with some areas significantly weaker due to clay infill. These conditions created a unique and decidedly difficult environment in which to develop New Afton?s infrastructure. Despite these difficulties, the mine began production on schedule in July 2012. The main production crusher for the mine is a gyratory crusher that allows for direct truck dumping, with a smaller jaw crusher in series to facilitate the initial development and production. The crusher chamber was redesigned several times to minimize the chamber volume, resulting in a 40% decrease in volume without losing functionality. After drilling and geotechnical testing, the location of the crusher was changed to eliminate the threat of fault affected ground in the area; the entire complex moved a short time before mining began on the chamber. The mining techniques used enabled tight control of the crusher pocket excavation, while also allowing for the timely completion of the chamber. The locations of the surface to underground infrastructure were tightly constrained by geology, surface infrastructure, and an existing open pit. The VR5 raise was drilled and abandoned part way through the reaming process when the drill string became stuck in fault gouge material. It was relocated and successfully completed. The VR7 raise hit a region of poor rock strength and deviated more than 11 m. Poor ground conditions caused a 130m section of the raise walls to fail. An innovative rehabilitation program was undertaken to re-establish the raise for ventilation. A surface to underground slick line was also installed to ease the material movement underground. A layout of the Extraction level was changed from herring bone to straight through drawpoints that resulted in a net reduction of 1.3 km of development. The Apex level was added to aid in the breakage over the major apex pillar and allow for geological mapping. A portion of the caving footprint is located within the footwall fault. The low strength, high clay content, and small joint spacing of the material resulted in blast-hole cut-off and drift deformation. Drift rehabilitation was a key factor in the successful development of the cave footprint. Innovative drilling and loading techniques were used to keep the holes open and to impede movement along the joint structures.

The Tampakan deposit is a strongly telescoped high-sulphidation-epithermal/ porphyry deposit pair which is hosted by a sequence of probable Pliocene age subaerial andesite flows. These host units lie on the western flank of a deeply dissected andesitic stratovolcano within the northernmost portion of the Sangihe Arc in southern Mindanao. The deposit was discovered by WMC geologists in 1992 and is currently undergoing resource evaluation. Preliminary resource estimations indicate a total inferred metal content of 12 million tonnes of copper metal and 16 million ounces of gold. Using a 0.2 per cent Cu cut-off grade, the deposit has a current mineral resource of approximately 2.5 billion tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.48 per cent copper. At a higher cut-off grade of 0.5 per cent Cu, the mineral resource is approximately 900 million tonnes with an estimated grade of 0.75 per cent copper. Mineralisation is open both to the west and at depth. The Tampakan district is centrally located with respect to a 100 km wide zone of left-lateral strike-slip deformation represented by the trans-Mindanao Cotabato Fault Zone. The district is transected by several WNW-striking wrench faults which represent strands of the regional Cotabato Fault Zone. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation within the Tampakan deposit is strongly controlled by NNE-trending faults which lie along a dilational orientation within the Pliocene stress field associated with the Cotabato strike-slip fault zone. The mineralisation is broadly hosted by a gently-dipping, tabular zone of partial to massive silicification which displays multi-phase brecciation, acid-leaching, related vuggy porosity and which is developed within a district-scale advanced-argillic and argillic lithocap exceeding 90 km 2 in area. High-sulphidation epithermal mineralisation is associated with a silica-pyrophyllite-dickite-alunite-diaspore¦sericite alteration assemblage which is transitional downward to sericite-chlorite alteration and relict potassic biotite-chlorite-magnetite-anhydrite alteration associated with pervasively developed but weakly mineralised porphyry quartz stockwork veins. The high-sulphidation mineralisation is dominated by disseminated, vein and vug-filling enargite-bornite-digenite-chalcocite-covellite ¦ molybdenite which has overprinted an earlier phase of porphyry copper stockwork veins associated with high-level porphyritic hornblende diorite stocks. The distribution of high-sulphidation alteration and mineralisation reflects strong stratigraphic and structural controls. The high-sulphidation mineralisation covers a surface area of approximately 1.6 km by 2.0 km and forms a tabular, flat-lying to gently-dipping body between 200 and 500 metres thick. It is intersected at RL-1200 m ASL (at surface) in the northern portion of the deposit and extends down to RL-600 m ASL at the southern end. The deposit has been diamond-drill tested to a depth of 400 - 500 metres where low-grade chalcopyrite-bornite-pyrite mineralisation is hosted by pervasive quartz stockwork veins. This deep-level mineralisation represents the outer portion of a porphyry Cu system hosted by both andesite flows and the uppermost portions of high-level hornblende diorite stocks. Deep drilling to test for higher tenor porphyry Cu mineralisation is planned.

"In the Netherlands, the Dutch Tunnel Standard has been developed for the execution of road tunnel projects. The Dutch Tunnel Standard is based on the Dutch Tunnel Law (WARVW) which sets the minimum safety standard for road tunnels in the Netherlands. Uniformity of tunnels and the uniform perception of a tunnel by its users leads to a higher safety level. Therefore, several items in the Dutch Tunnel Standard are specifically developed to ensure safety in emergency situations through the plane of human factors. Taking human factors into account is important in regular traffic situations, but in an emergency situation, this can be vital. In this paper, the development and contents of the Dutch Tunnel Standard are explained in the first part and in the second part, the systems related to human factors are described. DUTCH TUNNEL LAW AND THE NEED FOR THE DUTCH TUNNEL STANDARD In the 90’s of last century and the early 2000’s, several serious accidents occurred in tunnels in Europe. These accidents involved fire and led to many casualties. After these accidents, the European Union decided to change the regulations for tunnel safety, leading to the EU directive 2004/54/EG. The primary goal of this directive is, that casualties are minimized in case of a calamity in a tunnel (e.g. fire). In the Netherlands, the EU directive led to the development of the tunnel law and a tunnel regulation (in 2006) to prescribe the safety features required for a safe tunnel. The new Dutch tunnel law – cited in the Building Act – was meant to make tunnel design easier – but resulted at first in the opposite effect. Tunnel design in the Netherlands and design standards of Rijkswaterstaat Rijkswaterstaat – the executing organisation of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment – is the owner of the tunnels in the Dutch national motorway network, thus owner of the majority of the road tunnels in the Netherlands. In the early years of tunnel building in the Dutch national highway network (approximately 1950 – 1970), Rijkswaterstaat was not only owner, but also designer of its own assets. Most Dutch tunnels are submersed tunnels, because these type of tunnels provide a cost-effective way to make river crossings. Another type of tunnel that is used, is a TBM tunnel. Because of the geological conditions in the Netherlands (merely clay/peat and sand), there are no NATM or drill-and-blast tunnels in the Netherlands. Since the last decades, land tunnels (covered roads) are becoming more common to provide for multiple use of surface space and to meet more modern environmental regulations as traffic increases near densely populated areas. Tunnel lengths in the Netherlands vary from 500 m to 1.5 km for river crossings up to 6 km for the Western Scheldt (bored) tunnel. The lengths of land tunnels vary from 500 m up to 3 km. With these increasing lengths, some safety topics and design topics arise, topics that were non-issues in the past, when tunnels were only used as river crossings."

The Fozichong deposit – located in the south-western segment of the giant Qinhang metallogenic belt, South China – is a large-sized lead-zinc polymetallic deposit. This deposit contains two main ore districts, termed as the Guyi ore district in the north and the Hesan ore district in the south respectively. We present an integrated data set on sulfide minerals, fluid inclusions and stable isotope (H-O-S-Pb) geochemistry to better understand the features and genesis of the Fozichong deposit.Field and paragenetic relationships indicate three mineralisation stages forming the early (Po+Sp+Gn+Ccp+Py+Di+Ep+Qtz), middle (Sp+Gn+Ccp+Py+Ep+Chl+Qtz) and late (Gn+Sp+Py+Qtz+Cal) sulfide assemblages respectively. Mineral chemistry – particularly S/Fe and Co/Ni ratios in pyrite, Zn/Fe, Zn/Mn and Zn/Cd ratios in sphalerite and Pb/Ag ratios in galena – indicates a magmatic association for the sulfide minerals.Quartz and calcite coexisting with the sulfide minerals of various stages host abundant fluid inclusions. Quartz in the early stage contains two- or three-phase CO2-H2O and liquid-rich aqueous inclusions, which have homogenisation temperatures of 162~365°C and salinities of 2.9~17.8 wt per cent NaClequiv, whereas quartz and calcite from the middle and late stages are dominated by two-phase, liquid-rich aqueous inclusions that have slightly lower homogenisation temperatures (153°C~320°C) and much lower salinities (1.0~6.0 wt per cent NaClequiv). Hydrogen isotopes (dD = -59‰~-41‰), analysed using fluid inclusion waters from quartz and calculated oxygen isotopes (d18OH2O = -5.47‰~4.00‰) for the equilibrated ore fluids, indicate that the ore-forming fluids may have been sourced from magma and mixed with groundwater in the late stages. Sulfide minerals have d34S values of 2.3‰~4.3‰, consistent with a magmatic-derived source for sulfur. Lead isotopes (206Pb/204Pb = 18.592~18.794, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.648~15.864, 208Pb/204Pb = 38.909~39.580) confirm that lead and, by inference, zinc were mainly derived from magmatic rocks, with subordinate contributions from sedimentary rocks.Various lines of evidence support that the formation of the Fozichong deposit has close genetic association with the granite porphyry intruded in the late Yanshanian period (106 Ma), and it can be classified as a magmatic hydrothermal type lead-zinc deposit. It is well known that the excellent mica from Brazil played a most vital role in World War 11. Increased production from Brazil was necessary and with the assent of the Brazilian Government engineers from the united&apos; States went down to study the problem. One of the means advocated by a former Chief of Metals and Minerals Branch of the Board of Economic Warfare, Mr. Carl Schwegler, was the use of stripping machinery. On a pegmatite dike favorable for stripping, a small number of miners could produce as much mica per day as an underground mine employing many times the same number of men. Type of Deposit Favorable The most favorable type of pegmatite for stripping is that which lies more or less parallel to the surface of the slope of a hill. Pegmatite dikes that cut directly into a hill are not suitable for stripping except where a long outcrop extends along the slope. Then just the outcrop could be stripped to some advantage. The ratio at no time should be greater than 1: 3; i.e., I cu. m. of pegmatite to 3 cu. m. of waste, unless the pegmatite was extremely rich throughout the dike. The Economics of Stripping When a mineral is badly needed to win a war, not too much heed can be paid to costs. The object is to produce rapidly and in quantity. Again, a deposit containing a superior grade of mica may be worked although the pegmatite is more costly to work than another deposit containing a considerably greater amount of poor-grade mica. For example: one deposit may have a little mica that will run 11 per cent good stain and better when trimmed and contain 2 kg, of crude mica per cubic meter of pegmatite, while another may run 0.2 per cent of good stain and better, and have a mica content of 10 kg. per cubic meter. A number of stripping projects were found in the vicinity of Raul Soares, Minas Gerais. These were sampled in the various old workings by cutting out a cubic meter of pegmatite and saving the usable mica. Because of the proximity to the surface of most stripping projects, about 34 per cent only of the mica is good for trimming. The other 66 per cent is too badly weathered to be of use. In Table I are given data collected on five properties near Raul Soares. In Table I, "value per cubic meter of pegmatite" means the value of the qualified mica obtainable. This does not include the half trimmed and splittings. By "value per cubic meter of matter" is meant the value of the qualified mica per cubic meter of material excavated; i.e. both waste and pegmatite. This is the figure that should be used to determine whether the operation will be profitable or not, as the cost of stripping is about $0.14 per cubic meter. ABSTRACTED AND REVIEWED BY E. W. DAVIS,* MEMBER A.I.M.E. THE January-February number of the Journal of the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa is made up entirely of a discussion of Ball Wear in Cylindrical Mills. Following the principal paper by T. K. Prentice are several remarkably pertinent and carefully prepared discussions. Few persons in this country would be likely to see this publication, and since the information presented is new and of current interest, it seems desirable to abstract and review this publication for the benefit of the members of the A.I.M.E. The purpose of the investigation is stated in the first two paragraphs of Prentice&apos;s paper, as follows: Early in 1941, The Chamber of Mines Steel Products, Limited, initiated a series of tests under semi-working scale conditions to determine, if possible, those physical and chemical properties of a ball which make it resistant to wear when used in a cylindrical mill as a grinding medium, with the primary object of incorporating those beneficial qualities in the balls being produced at their works. This paper describes the tests carried out and discusses the results obtained. From these results it was possible to formulate a new theory relating to ball wear in cylindrical mills. This theory is presented in the second portion of this paper. PRACTICAL BALL-MILL TESTS IN A CYLINDRICAL MILL Part I of the paper begins with a discussion of the methods used for the manufacture of grinding balls in South Africa. The following paragraph is of particular interest. The cast steel ingots, 4 ¼ - in. square by 3 ft. 6 in. long, are re-heated in a gas-fired sloping stationary-hearth furnace and then rolled in a six-pass continuous mill into 2 5/8 in. round billets. Some of these billets are then removed and cut into suitable lengths for forging into 4 in., 3 ½ in., 3 in. or 2 ½ in. balls by means of three Drop and two Beché hammers, but the greater number, whilst still at about 1,000 ºC., pass directly into a set of scroll rolls which produce, in an ingenious manner, finished 3 in. balls direct from the 2 5/8 in. billets. Except in special cases, all balls are allowed to cool in the atmosphere and are not water quenched. Details of the Tests In order to enable the reader to evaluate properly the results and conclusions in the rest of the paper and in the discussions following the paper, most of the information presented by the author under this heading is quoted: ….. The testing unit was a nominal 30 in. diameter and 18 in. long centre discharge Denver Ball Mill. The ore pulp to the ball mill comprised a small portion of the normal feed to one of the fourteen City Deep 5 ft. 6 in. X 22 ft. tube mills, and the grinding media consisted of the balls under test plus other balls to give the desired load. The Chamber of Mines of South Africa is an association of major mining corporations, gold mines, coal mines, diamond mines and other metalliferous mines. It looks after those interests of its members which can best be handled on a co-operative basis. The Chamber&apos;s activities include the engagement of labour; the negotiations of all labour matters, including minimum wage rates, with recognised trade unions and associations; the carrying out of advanced technological research; representing the industry in dealings with the government and the administration of miners&apos; training colleges and rescue training stations. Subsidiary companies of the Chamber handle matters such as the refining of gold and other metals; the processing and marketing of uranium and the marketing of Krugerrands. The thirty-two gold mines members of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa produce approximately 694 tons of gold per annum. To achieve this they employ 430000 persons and break about 8400 kilotons of rock per month. The working revenue is approximately 4 225 million US dollars per annum and the annual working profit is approximately 2 050 million US dollars. The electric power consumed by the gold mining industry is 1650 MW, about 20% of the total power produced in South Africa, and the annual costs of this power is approximately 200 million US dollars per annum. It is estimated that about 25% of this power is used for ventilation and refrigeration appliances. Thus the annual power costs for ventilation and refrigeration is approximately 50 million US dollars. The gold bearing reef is a narrow tabular deposit situated at varying depths throughout the gold fields. The weighted mean rock breaking depths and, virgin rock temperatures range from 1 700 - 9 000 ft (520 - 2 740 m) and 68 - 113°F (20 - 45°C) respectively. The maximum virgin rock temperature at which mining currently takes place is 130°F (54.5 C). Obviously at such depths and temperatures and with such a large labour force the provision of an acceptable environment is critical and to achieve this 59 000 000 cfm (28 000 m3/s) of air is downcasted during the main shift and 122500 tons (430 MW) of refrigeration are provided. Legislation in South Africa requires that on metalliferous mines when more than 1000 persons are employed underground during any one shift the manager shall appoint one or more ventilation officers. The legal responsibilities of the ventilation officers are concerned mainly with the measurement and control of dust. In practice, this is not the main part of their work and ventilation personnel perform many other duties such as measuring and controlling the distribution of air, checking the performance of fans and cooling plants, planning air and refrigeration requirements and, more recently, measuring and controlling noise and illumination levels. Ventilation personnel are specialists who provide management with advice on all matters relating to the mine environment. At the present time there are 506 persons engaged as ventilation personnel in gold mines and a further 1744 persons are employed in gold mine ventilation departments in a non-technical capacity, for example as construction workers, filter cleaners, fire patrollers, etc.
