During 1939 little of consequence happened in East and East Central Texas in the way of oil discoveries. At the end of the year, there were 47 oil and gas fields in the district. Twelve other fields, 11 oil and one gas, have been abandoned. The ranking fields in order of the number of completions for the year were East Texas, Talco, and Rodessa (Texas portion). There were 511 oil wells (distillate wells included), 32 gas wells, and 257 dry holes completed in the district. Exploration, Discoveries and Extensions During the year, 113 exploratory wells were drilled, the same number as in 1938; four oil fields and one gas-distillate field were discovered. Perhaps the most important discovery, which has been named Barron field, was that of M. Samuel et al., No. 1 Barron in Limestone County. The wells in this field are of the gas-distillate type. Other than the Talco and Sulphur Bluff fields, which produce oil from the Paluxy sand (Upper Trinity), this is the first field on the Corsicana-Mexia fault zone to obtain commercial production from deeper Trinity strata. This "pay" is the Petit lime of the Lower Glen Rose of the Trinity group. The four oil discoveries were: Redland, Angelina County; Bazette, Henderson County; Rowe and Baker, Henderson County; and Marion County Shallow in Marion County. It is believed that the Bazette field, Navarro County, represents an extension of the Flag Lake field. Production and Proration The district produced 175,053,729 bbl. of oil (distillate production included) which is a decrease of 4.0 per cent from the 182,369,484 bbl. "Run-of-mine ore is reduced to 4 per cent on 4 mesh (3/ 16 inch), using four stages of dry crushing. The mill feed is then reduced to 2 per cent on 48 mesh and 60 per cent through 200 mesh, using one stage of ball milling in cyanide solution. During the subsequent treatment about one-tenth of the tonnage is removed as a table concentrate and ground to 77 per cent through 325 mesh. The size of the mill tailing is 66 per cent through 200 mesh.Four stages of ore reduction began when the dry crushing plant at No. 26 Shaft came into operation at a maximum rate of 440 tons an hour on July 31, 1941. A detailed description of the crushing plant was published in C .I .M. Trans., Vol. LVI, 1953.One-stage ball milling in cyanide solution came into full operation on January 11, 1938. The ball milling plant had a capacity of 4800 tons daily when reducing mill feed at 2. 7 per cent on 1/ 4 inch to 54. 3 per cent through 200 mesh. Primary grinding to 60 per cent through 200 mesh commenced May 22, 1945, when the feed was 3 per cent on 4 mesh. DOUG HALBE: Thanks, Terry. And in spite of your introductory comments, I'm going to attempt to continue our hallowed tradition of saying nice things about the speakers. This is really a serious comment now. We, as mineral processing and mill people, don't often talk to people outside our general operating area. One thing that we've tried to do in this operators' symposium is get speakers from various types of plant operations to help illustrate all the things we have in common. Our next speaker is from the industrial minerals area. I think there's a lot to be learned from industrial minerals operations. Some of the people in the last session learned some things about fine grinding in industrial mineral operations. I was a little surprised to see people there grind to 2 microns. Our next speaker is Frank Alsobrook. Frank is another nonmetallurgical engineer. He has a degree in geology, a master's of science from the University of Wisconsin. He's had his own very successful consulting company for a number of years. This is your 11th anniversary, Frank? Very good. He's also the immediate past chair of the industrial minerals division. I think the folks at the speakers' table should be ashamed. You have been so rowdy that Frank chose to sit in the audience. [laughter] We'd like you to come up now, Frank, and tell us some things that you've seen that might be useful to us. INTRODUCTION FRANK ALSOBROOK: The three topics addressed briefly are (1) teamwork and operations modeling, (2) the pitfalls of capital conservatism, and (3) the potential for by-product recovery. Ideas for improvements in these areas are not unique to industrial minerals but apply to metal mining and processing operations, as well. Four, general methods have been used in the study of the decomposition of coal. The first has been directed toward the processes of coal formation, the second has been by means of microscopic studies, the third from the data of destructive distillation, and the fourth has made use of various solvents. Applying these methods to the sulfur of coal, it has been found that the organic sulfur of plant and animal life enters into the formation of coal and remains in organic combination in the final product. The inorganic sulfur is almost entirely combined as iron pyrites and marcasite. The infiltration of hydrogen-sulfide waters is doubtless a large factor in these combinations. Sulfates are found in very small quantities except where free oxygen has entered the coal strata. The mechanical mixing of detritus with the early coal material is another source of sulfur. In this case the sulfur is distributed in microscopic particles throughout the mass. In destructive distillation, a part off the sulfur comes off as hydrogen sulfide and various thiophen compounds, but this furnishes little information as to the nature of the sulfur compounds in the coal itself. The use of solvents has given valuable data concerning the sulfur compounds in coal. Fremy1 and later E. Guignet2 noted the action of alkaline solutions on coal after treatment with nitric acid and Anderson and Roberts3 showed' the presence of large quantities of organic' sulfur in the extract so obtained. In a study of the phenol extract of coal, Parr and Hadley4 found organic sulfur in the soluble organic material. These investigations proved the presence of organic sulfur in coal in addition to the inorganic forms, such as iron pyrites and sulfates. T. M. Drown5

IT HAS been known for centuries that iron and steel could be hardened by cold hammering and that the metal could be restored to the normal condition by heating to a red heat and cooling either rapidly or slowly with nearly pure iron and slowly with steels containing considerable carbon. The art of tempering steels is also very old. When a medium- or high-carbon steel is quenched from a cherry-red heat, the hardness is increased; this hardness can be reduced by heating to various temperatures below the lower thermal critical point, which is near 700° C. The present paper will not consider these old and well-known changes in iron and steel below the thermal critical range but will confine itself to the more unusual changes, some of which have been studied recently. Stromeyer,1 for example, in 1886, reports that both working steel and heat treatment of steel in the blue-heat range are highly injurious. Recently, however, some metallurgists believe that the straightening of warped steel forgings at a blue heat produces a beneficial effect on the metal.2 The Engineering Division of the National Research Council has constituted a committee on Physical Changes -in Iron and Steel Below the Thermal Critical Range, which has the following personnel: R. The results expected from a longwall face can best be estimated from the ideal production rate, determined by the capacity of the equipment and the conditions in which it is installed, the effective operating hours, and the utilisation.The effective operating hours are determined by a number of scheduling factors which include the proportion of manned time to calendar time, the effective shift factor (effective time to manned time) and the move times.Analysis of the results achieved on the last 121 completed longwall panels in Australia (1984 onwards) shows a significant trend between 'actual tonnes/manned hour' and 'ideal production rate' (the measure of the capacity of the installation).Using 1982 'state of the art' longwall equipment, (the average in use in the seven year period), it should be possible to produce around 2.7M tonne/year ROM from a mine with one longwall. Few mines are achieving this.A review of production scheduling factors and general natural hazards affecting some mines suggests three things.1. Whilst some increase in average effective hours has followed the CIT decision, further improvement is possible at many installations.2. Many mines subject to general natural hazards, such as high gas make and high general stress, have found effective solutions and achieve the same utilisation as the overall average.3. A small number of faces within such mines have been severely affected, some less so. The most severe effects of natural hazards appear to be very site specific. This emphasises the need for detailed investigation of the causes, and development of means of predicting their presence. Only then can either satisfactory technical solutions be found to overcome the problems or prior decisions be chosen not to mine badly affected panels.

A novel electrochemical cell has been developed for the recovery of MnO2 from residue of pyrolusite ore leading loaded with Fe, Al Ni, Co and Si impurities, This new process can be considered as an alternative to the traditional methods : S02, H2O2 or bioleaching. It has been observed to proceed fairly rapidly and could prove to be a more economically viable process, as well as being more environmentally acceptable. Electrochemical characterization and kinetic studies have shown that MnO2 is effectively leached by electrogenerated ferrous ions at high current density from a pulp containing less than 5 g8 Fe. The chemical reactions are : Cathode (inox) : 2F23+ + 2e ? 2 Fe2+ Bulk: MnO2 + 2 fe2+ 4H+ ? Mn2+ + 2 Fe3+ + 2 H2O Anode (Pb-Ag) : H2O ? ½ O2 + 2H+ + 2e Global: MnO2 +2H+ Fe2+ = Mn2+ + H2O + 1/2 O2 The catholyte (MnO2 pulp) circulates upward in the expanded mesh cathode separated from the sulfuric acid solution anolyte by a separator which shows high mechanical resistance, low porosity, low potential drop, and reasonable cost. Laboratory and mini-pilot tests have led to the construction of an OT crating pilot plant (100 kg/hr) able to leach more than 95% of Mn, Ni, Co at 1000-1200 A/m2, 50°C with high faradic yield (> 95 %) and low power consumption (3.2 kWh/kg kWh/kg &4D). New applications like the treatment of spent Zn-Mn batteries, polluted soils, spent catalysts and oxide ore (cobalt, nickel) with electrogenerated redox species are now investigated at a laboratory and mini-pilot scale.

UP to a certain limit, the increase of pressure on the diamond-drill increases the rate of progress in drilling. That limit is set by the resistance of the diamonds to compression; and beyond it, the destruction of the stones will involve an. economic loss, both in time and in money. It is, therefore, important to all diamond-drillers to know what is the resistance mentioned. In Europe, operators usually follow an empirical rule, which directs the maintenance of a pressure, on the area-of the bottom of the drilling-tool, of 12 kg. per sq. 4m. For the tools in ordinary use, this is equivalent to 1 kg. per sq. mm. of the diamonds set in the tool So far as I know, American drillers are using pressures as high as 50 to 60 kg. per sq. cm. of the total area of the drill, and the consumption of diamonds (on Denny's authority, 0.2 carats per meter bored) is greater in America than in Europe. But the reason for this difference may be the comparatively larger size of the diamonds commonly used by American drillers. With the assistance of my friend, the late S. Woisslaw, who was the pioneer of diamond-drilling in Russia, I selected from his stock a number of black diamonds, which I subjected in my laboratory to compression-tests. To prepare regular cubes for such tests, as is generally done with other stones, would have been not only costly, but, what is more important, practically useless. I therefore determined, in order to assimilate as nearly as possible the conditions of actual use, to place each sample between a hard plate (corresponding to the rock) and a softer plate (corresponding to the bottom of the tool), into which it would be pressed during the test.

Today there are numerous electronic rotating vane and thermal (hot-wire) anemometers, as well as vortex meters available to measure air velocity. Of these, a laboratory and field evaluation has found that certain instruments are better suited to routine airflow measurements in mine roadways and ventilation ducts. This paper concludes a study sponsored by the Atomic Energy Control Board of Canada, that was introduced at the 5th U.S. Symposium. The study investigated the suitability of currently available electronic anemometers as replacements for the traditional mechanical analog devices while maintaining standard methods such as the continuous traverse. Six electronic instruments were subjected to extensive tests under controlled conditions both in a wind-tunnel and in the field at an underground mine. The evaluation concluded that ergonomics and design were major considerations in unit preference as most of the instruments had very similar performance characteristics. Specific findings were: a) In the wind-tunnel the vane anemometers, especially the "micro" vanes, were more susceptible to misalignment or yaw effects but these were not noticeable in the field; b) Both the vortex and hot-wire anemometers were suitable for continuous traverses of mine roadways; c) Traversing ventilation ducts was more practical than a Pitot-tube multi-point assessments or discharge measurements; d) Yaw is a major concern in duct measurements; e) The continuous traversing method for roadways overestimates the average air velocity; f) Hot-wire anemometers can require significant air density corrections; and g) Hot-wire anemometers are better suited than rotating vanes to mine roadways of less than 1 m/s average air velocity. Based on research detailed in this paper, the ventilation engineer should be able to match the mine's requirements with the presented instrument performance characteristics, thereby optimizing the purchase of a new anemometer and the efficiency with which air velocities are measured.

"The most commonly used high-chromium white cast iron (HCWCI) is the hypoeutectic white cast iron that contains 2–3.5 wt.% C and 10–30% Cr. This type of material relies on hard, brittle M7C3 carbides to impart good wear resistance. Due to its good wear resistance, this material has found application in the mining industry and cement industry. However, it has low fracture strength and this challenge led to research aimed at refining the microstructure. This was done by the addition of niobium in the range between 0.1 and 0.6 wt.%. In the as-cast condition, the addition of niobium was found to increase the fracture strength due to the finer eutectic microstructure. The hardness was also found to have increased slightly compared to the reference alloy with no niobium additions. Low fracture strength after heat treatment was observed in the Nb-added HCWCI, which is believed to have been caused by the precipitation of secondary carbides and the transformation of the matrix from austenite to martensitic. IntroductionFor the past few years Mintek has been involved in a project in which a number of alloys have been identified for grinding media applications. The high-chromium white cast iron (HCWCI) alloys were among the alloys researched for this application. The knowledge acquired from the grinding ball media research has now been extended to mill liners, which have traditionally been made of manganese-, chromium- and chrome-molybdenum steels. The replacement of worn mill liners costs the mining industry a significant amount of money and this has led to a need for continuous research to prolong the life of the liners. During milling operations, liner wear has an adverse effect on the capacity of the mill, the energy efficiency and milling efficiency and finally leads to relining, to replace worn liners."

High-sulphidation (HS) gold, silver and/or copper deposits are generated in both the epithermal and the upper parts of the underlying porphyry environments over vertical intervals of up to 2 km. The HS deposits are generated in advanced argillic lithocaps, which are products of the absorption of acidic magmatic volatiles by voluminous groundwater systems. Mineralisation styles in HS systems reflect depth of formation as well as the interplay between structural, lithological and hydrothermal parameters. The deep parts of HS systems, at depths of >1000 m, are typified by disseminated copper¦gold mineralisation comprising digenite, chalcocite and covellite in pervasive advanced argillic as well as underlying sericitic alteration. In highly telescoped systems, suchmineralisation may overprint porphyry stocks and associatedquartz-veinlet stockworks. Intermediate levels of HS systems commonlycontain fault-controlled copper-gold mineralisation, typically as enargite in bodies of vuggy residual quartz, silicification and/or massive pyritic sulphide. Gold with minor associated copper mineralization in the area of what is now the Bougainville porphyry copper deposit has been known since the 1920s and was probably known in German colonial times, pre- 19 14, although no records persist other than a reference by Stanley (1922) to copper specimens from Kieta that he saw in Rabaul. Stanley did not at the time believe that they came from Kieta. Gold was first discovered at Kupei by Jack Comb in 1929 and the Kieta Goldfield was proclaimed in May 1930. In December 1932, the Tapu Reward Claim at Moroni - the site of the Bougainville Copper concentrator, was pegged by C.W.M. Evans who prospected up river from the West Coast. The Pumkuna (Panguna) Reward Claim on the site of the subsequent porphyry copper deposit was granted in February 1934 to G.A. Myers. n May 193 1, the Kupei Reward Claim was transferred to Bou- gainville Gold Options NL and later reverted to Jack Comb and then the Bougainville Syndicate, as did the Pumkuna and Moroni claims. Most of the interested parties had come from the Edie Creek rush on the New Guinea mainland. In 1935, N.H. Fisher, the geologist in Rabaul for the New Guinea administration who later became director of the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources in Canberra, reported on the three gold areas. Norm Fisher described the gold and copper mineralization and its habit in great detail and this report had a major influence on the events leading to the discovery in the 1960s. Gold production up to the Japanese invasion probably did not exceed $50,000 in value. Half a ton of copper-gold ore from Kupei was sent to O.T. Lempriere's in Sydney for assay in the early 1930s.

There are a number of likely impacts from mining operations, but a key issue is uncertainty about the environmental effects of sediment plumes created by disturbance to the seafloor and discharge of processed waters. The New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) is undertaking a research project to improve understanding of such impacts (relevant to both mining and trawl fisheries), by examining the extent and persistence of sediment plumes, the immediate impact and subsequent recovery of seafloor exposed to these plumes, and the effect on functioning of ecologically significant species. The project will use a combination of field survey experimentation with in situ observations and controlled laboratory-based experiments. The field work begins in May 2018 when an area of up to 1km2 at depths of 400-500 m on the Chatham Rise, 450 km east the New Zealand South Island will be subjected to disturbance by an upgraded former NOAA Benthic Disturber. The suspended sediment load created by the disturbance will be tracked and monitored, with the effects on seafloor animals examined by pre-and post-disturbance sampling. A wide range of seafloor sampling, benthic landers, towed cameras, oceanographic moorings and water column monitoring will be carried out over a three week period. Monitoring surveys will be repeated in 2019 and 2020 to determine the longer-term resilience and recovery of disturbed communities. The laboratory-based side of the programme, also starting in 2018, involves holding live deep-sea corals and sponges in tanks at NIWA, and exposing them to various levels and duration of particle loads in the water in order to reveal lethal thresholds as well as sub- lethal effects of settled and suspended sediment.

I have bad considerable experience with the testing-machine at the Watertown Arsenal, having had broken there sixteen large steel eye-bars, besides quite a number of iron bars and two compression members. So far as accurate mid satisfactory results are concerned, the machine is all we could ask for, and the officers who have it in charge, together with their civil assistants, are thoroughly conversant with it 1 details, and entirely competent to make the tests required. The principal defect is that the force is very inadequate. As the machine is arranged, tile weighing apparatus is at one end and stationary, the measure of strain being carried from this to the scale-beam by the fluid in a tube m small that it looks like a wire. At the other end is placed the hydraulic press by which the power is applied; this press is mounted on a small carriage and held by two eight-inch screws about four feet above the floor, which arc of course strained in compression during tensile tests, and in tension during' compression tests. When the stretch of the material has exhausted the throw of the plunger it is necessary to relieve the strain, draw back the plunger, and move the carriage along, which is done by nuts turned by steam working on the large screws. Every specimen placed in the machine must be lifted above the large screws and lowered into position. To do this, crabs, running on travellers, which span the entire room, are placed over the machine, and by these the specimen can be lifted and put in place. The actual time required to make a test depends largely on the amount which the material stretches, bat it may generally be said, that for specimens which will stretch from two to three feet the

In earlier studies along a mining region recipient (the river VormbScken, northern Sweden), the fraction of certain trace metals recovered in the particulate phase has been found to increase with increasing concentrations of particulate iron. This study was conducted to see if the pattern could be reproduced by adding minor amounts of ferrous iron, simulating groundwater inputs. When the iron is oxidised in the near neutral river water, it will form iron oxyhydroxides and precipitate. Trace metals may be either co-precipitated along with the iron, or adsorbed onto the freshly formed precipitates. If this is the case, such a mechanism may be incorporated as a part of a final polishing step in a mine drainage treatment system based on natural attenuation processes. The experiments were performed at 0¦C and 22¦C, on authentic river waters collected during the winter and summer of 2002, respectively. In order to investigate the influence of particles and bacteria initially present, filtered river waters (4 solution were added to the experimental beakers, increasing the iron content of the waters by 0 - 1.5 mg/L. The oxidation and precipitation processes were followed by means of filtration (0.2 ¦m) for up to seven days. In order to be able to compare the experimental results with the actual field situation, on both experimental occasions, surface water samples were collected also from three stations situated along the river. The samples collected were analysed for iron, calcium, and trace metals by AAS and ICP-MS. The iron oxyhydroxides formed in the experiment did not influence the partitioning of As, Cu, and Pb to the same extent as the particulate iron encountered along the river appeared to do. FRED HELLMAN, New York.-My experience with shovel mining has been restricted almost entirely to Chuquicamata as far as operation is concerned. We had there an unusual condition in that the rock is cohesive because of the salts in it, so that you can probably work higher banks than is possible in most places. Recently they have reduced the height of the banks and have found that lower bank affords better working condition than the higher bank. It took two years of experimentation to determine the best height of bank for that particular mine. Each mine should be considered by itself and, to state off hand the best height of bank. for any given mine is impossible. We worked the high banks in Chile without much trouble. We adopted high banks in the beginning in order to obtain the minimum expense in railway approaches at that time. The first plan was for 50 ft.; then to get production started with the smallest possible expenditure of money, the approach to the deposit was changed and the first bank had an ultimate height of about 180 ft. We worked that bank; quite success-fully, but I do not think that it could be done anywhere else.

"The Ararat Terminal Station (ARTS) is located 190km to the north-west of Melbourne, approximately 1.7km to the north of Elmhurst Township in the Pyrenees region of western Victoria, Australia. The site occupies an area of approximately 7.2 hectare of farmland. The electricity generated by the Ararat Wind Farm is directed to the ARTS terminal station before being connected to the grid. The ARTS structural design includes more than 180 steel yard support structures, three 25m-tall gantry ‘A’ frames, three modular control room buildings, a precast transformer bund, precast fire wall structures and related foundation design. Innovative driven engineered glue laminated timber (glulam) piles in a cruciform shape were used to reduce the foundation construction time, cost and the amount of concrete used in the project. It is the first time that engineered timber piles made from farmed Australian pine trees have been used in a large-scale environmentally-friendly project. Durability of the timber was achieved by H5 treatment and the use of reinforced concrete pile caps to protect the cruciform timber piles at the ground line. A pile-driving sequence was developed based on field trials. The lateral load capacities of the piles were estimated using engineering principles and from full-scale tests in the field. This paper provides an overview of details of engineered timber cruciform piles, durability of timber piles, design information, pile construction procedures, pile-driving procedures, the testing protocol, test results and validation. The test results were compared with predictions from several methods. In addition, potential future applications of similar systems in other infrastructure projects, and opportunities for future improvements are discussed. Radiometric surveys of the beach and nearshore zone of the Dutch Frisian Islands have identified sands enriched in heavy minerals. The areas of heavy mineral concentration have been mapped in detail using a state of the art towed gamma-ray detector, which gives improved sensitivity through the use of new detector materials and improved data processing techniques. The detector provides continuous measurement of sea floor radioactivity (and of a number of other parameters) and can be used simultaneously with other survey techniques, such as echo sounding, sidescan sonar and shallow seismic profiling. It enables a rapid, and cost effective, assessment of the surface distribution of heavy minerals to be made. The heavy mineral suite includes magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, rutile and zircon. These minerals contain 1-3 orders of magnitude more U and Th, in terms of their activity concentrations, than the accompanying light minerals (mainly quartz). Since the heavy mineral composition of the sands appears to be relatively constant along the Dutch Frisian Island chain, the U and Th concentrations can be used to provide a quick estimate of the heavy mineral content. The sea floor radiometric measurements allow sediment sampling for more detailed analysis to be highly targetted. The zones of heavy mineral enrichment are generally sub-parallel to the coast and are usually confined to water depths of 5-10 m. There is a close correlation with sand bars on the shoreface, the highest radioactivity typically occurring just seaward of the crest of these features. As well as being used for heavy mineral exploration, similar radiometric methods can be applied to mineral processing. Gamma-ray detection systems can be used to provide rapid analysis in the process stream enabling on-line grade control and optimisation of processing, from excavation of mineral sands to the final products.

"Solids concentration (% solids) profiles and the clear liquid/slurry interface level (mudline) were determined from conductivity measurements in thickeners at Falconbridge' s Strathcona mill (Ni concentrate and non-mag thickeners) and Kidd Creek Division (Cu, Zn concentrates and final tails in the concentrator and thickeners in the Zn plant).The conductivity measurement system consisted of a probe 1.5 m in length with 24 electrode cells, a 24-channel relay, a conductivity meter and a computer. A conductivity profile is collected which locates the mud-line by the sharp change in conductivity. The conductivity measurements are readily converted to solids concentration profiles without need for calibration.The results from the conductivity measurements were compared with those from pressure profiles and direct measurements on local samples obtained using a modified Noranda sampler.It is concluded that the conductivity technique is applicable to locate the mud-line and to estimate the solids concentration profiles in thickeners. This on-line information could improve the operational efficiency of industrial thickeners.INTRODUCTIONAn automated, on-line technique for detecting the clear liquid/slurry interface (or mudline) and the variation in solids concentration with depth would enhance thickener operation and control. In some processes such enhanced control offers significant benefits. For example, in hydrometallurgical operations solid/liquid separation is often the process limiting step. Water treatment plants are increasingly expected to operate remotely and reliable sensing is vital.Current attempts to detect the mud-line include reflection of some signal (e.g. sonar), floats (Dahlstrom, 1985) and measurement of pressure (Rosenblum, 1991), and in one case, natural radioactivity of the solids (Johnston and Simic, 1991). A recent commercial development uses reflection from a vertical array of optical transmitters/sensors, which also gives local solids concentration (BTG Inc., 1991)."
