Micro-optical and synchrotron radiation-induced X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) techniques have been used to study unoxidized and oxidized samples of Carlintype sedimentar,y rock-hosted disseminated gold ore. In these samples, Where much of the gold is submicroscopic, the SXRF technique, which has a spatial resolution of about 20 ~m and a minimum detection limit (MDL) in the ppm range, is an ideal and necessary tool for precisely locating gold-rich areas in a sample. Gold-rich areas pinpointed by SXRF were later studied in detail by micro-optical methods, principally optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX). In two unoxidized and one oxidized ore samples, SXRF analyses have shown gold to be present predominantly in discrete clay-rich and silicified areas. Gold was not detected by SXRF in association with pyrite or carbonaceous materials. SEM-EDX examination of the gold-bearing areas in the unoxidized samples succeeded in identifying only two free gold particles, 0.2 and 0.5 ~m in size. In the oxidized sample, gold particles appear to be larger (but still submicroscopic) in average size and more evident in micro-optical examination after SXRF location of goldbearing areas. The findings of these studies may help to improve the efficiency of processing and recovery of gold from unoxidized ores.

Spontaneous oxidation and combustion of sulfides and resultant fires are serious problems in underground mines. The Bureau of Mines has con-ducted fundamental thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) research to deter-mine the mechanisms and factors governing the rate of low-temperature pyrite oxidation, and to identify possible inhibitors to spontaneous oxidation and combustion. The mechanism of low-temperature pyrite oxidation was found to be topochemical, meaning that the oxidation process is controlled by the chemical reaction at the interface between pyrite (FeS2) and iron sulfate (FeS04)' An activation energy of 8.9 kcal/mol FeS2 was obtained for oxidation of minus 500-mesh pyrite in an atmosphere of 60 vol pct water vapor and 40 vol pct . Water-vapor content of the atmosphere was found to be the critical factor in the rate of spontaneous oxidation of pyrite, with a water-vapor content greater than 20 vol pct needed for accelerated oxidation. An atmosphere of pure oxygen resulted in negligible oxidation. The rate of pyrite oxidation is also greatly affected by the particle size of pyrite. Pyrite-oxidation rate increased drastically for particles less than 40 ~m. Room-temperature pyrophoric behavior was observed for freshly ground unoxidized pyrite (55 pct minus 5 ~m) upon exposure to air. Addition of water-adsorbing materials such as activated alumina (Alz03) decreased the rate of pyrite oxidation.

Flotation gases and conditioning of the pulp with them are one of the important parameters of flotation and should be taken into account especially in the flotation of sulphide ores. In this study, flotation of pure chalcopyrite and pyrite samples were investigated with air, oxygen and nitrogen as flotation gas and the effect of conditioning with these three gases also were performed. Flotation gas was introduced for 5min, 10min, 15min and 20 min. For chalcopyrite flotation there was no drastic change in recovery when air, oxygen and nitrogen were used as flotation gas but conditioning the pulp with oxygen for 10 minutes increased the recovery about 8% where pulp potential has been approximately 25 mV with chalcopyrite and 150 mV with platinum electrodes. Conditioning with all three gases decreased the pyrite recovery by about 20% with 20 minutes conditioning. Pulp potential decreased in the presence of nitrogen while conditioning with air and oxygen increased the pulp potential for both electrodes. Generally potential increased for both minerals with oxygenation and aeration time but it was stable or slightly decreased with nitrogenation. Comparison of the gases showed that the different flotation gases do not effect flotation recovery but conditioning the pulp with these gases at pre-flotation effects chalcopyrite and pyrite flotation recovery, most dramatically pyrite.

In fire refining of copper, the affinities of various impurity elements on dissolved oxygen is of great significance. Further, in the design of oxygen probes in liquid copper, the influence of solute interactions on the activity of oxygen need to be considered in order to evaluate the oxygen concentration in molten copper. The present paper presents a series of measurements of the activities of oxygen in liquid Cu-M-o alloys (where M stands for Mn, Zn, As, Se or Te) carned out by the present group employing the solid electrolyte galvanic cell technique. Extreme care was taken to control the oxygen potentials in the inert gas atmosphere, and to keep the oxygen levels very low in the molten metal. The oxygen content was determined by analysis of the samples taken out from the melt. The results obtained showed that Mn has a strong negative influence on the activity coefficient of oxygen in liquid copper. A similar, but less prominent effect was observed in the case of Zn. Arsenic had no influence on the activity of oxygen in Cu (liq.). Se and Te had slight negative effect on oxygen activities in copper at XQ >10-5, while at lower oxygen levels the interaction coefficients were found to be positive. The results obtained were compared with empirical models for the calculation of interaction coefficients available in literature.

Hypogene alteration zones have been described as a precursor to high-grade haematite deposits in Australia, Brazil and elsewhere. This alteration is described as being below or distal and is typically magnetite-carbonate-silicates reflecting Mg - Fe metasomatism. This paper describes, without genetic implication, the mineral zonation and possible structural control on mineralogic variation within the Tilden Mine, a concentrating grade haematite deposit in Michigan, USA. In contrast to the high-grade deposits, these variations are not peripheral to the orebodies but are the ore. The deposit occurs within the Negaunee Iron Formation, along the southern margin of the Paleoproterozoic Marquette Range Supergroup basin. The regional structure is a fault-bounded west plunging syncline within the crustal scale Great Lakes Tectonic Zone, which forms the boundary between Archean granite-greenstone and gneissic terranes. Local structure consists of second-order anticlines and synclines with variable northwest and southwest plunges. The interaction of sedimentation and diagenesis within growth fault controlled basins, along with a possible metamorphic and/or hydrothermal overprint has resulted in a complex series of ore types. For modelling purposes, the deposit is divided into geologic domains based on both lithology and metallurgical response in the laboratory and in the plant. Mineralogic variation is recognised within individual mineral grains; at blast pattern (10 - 15 m) and development drill hole (100 m) scales.

A ArcelorMittal Aços Planos América do Sul, unidade de Tubarão (AMT), desde o início de operação tem os recursos hídricos como uma das questões centrais nas estratégias de sustentabilidade e estabilidade operacional para sua produção. A gestão hídrica da AMT, dentre outras ações, garante que 95% de toda a água captada na usina venha do mar e retorne sem entrar em contato direto com nenhum outro material. A utilização de água de reuso de efluentes internos resulta em menor necessidade, apenas 5%, de consumo de água doce. O investimento contínuo em reusos internos e a eficiência dos sistemas permitiu em 2014 um índice de recirculação de água doce na AMT de 97%. No início do ano de 2015, o Estado do Espírito Santo declarou estado de alerta devido ao prolongamento da estiagem e consequente redução das vazões dos principais rios do Estado. Mais uma vez empenhada em garantir a preservação dos recursos hídricos, a AMT implantou novas ações, em caráter emergencial, para reduzir a captação de água doce. São ações voltadas à otimização do processo, novos reusos de efluentes, além da eliminação de perdas. Os esforços resultaram na redução expressiva do volume de água doce utilizado na AMT chegando a reduzir o consumo específico de 3,9 m³/t de janeiro de 2015, para 2,9 m³/t em fevereiro de 2015.

Between 2008 and 2013, the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) carried out five exploration cruises to the German license area in the eastern Pacific Nodule Belt. The first two expeditions were mainly dedicated to multibeam mapping to obtain an overview of the seafloor topography and acoustic backscatter strength. These data were used to identify ten to fourteen prospective nodule fields for potential future mining, which together cover about 16% of the total license area of 75,000 km2. During the last three cruises, three of these potential mining areas were explored in detail. For this purpose, the BGR developed a suite of exploration methods to map nodule size distributions and nodule abundances. These methods include acoustic surveys with vessel-based multibeam systems as well as near-bottom video mapping complemented by in situ sampling. The economically most valuable field has a size of ca. 2,000 km2, of which 34% is covered by medium to large nodules (> 4 cm long axis of nodules) with an average abundance of 22.4 kg/m2 and 44% is covered by small nodules (< 4 cm) with a mean abundance of 17.5 kg/m2. The total mass of nodules in this field comprises more than 30 million tons wet weight and could sustain deep-sea mining for at least 10 years.

The Bendigo Goldfield is located in the state of Victoria, Australia, and is one of a number of quartz-reef fields that make up the greater Central Victorian Goldfield. At Bendigo gold particles are characterised by their very coarse nature, ranging from below 100 to over 10 000 ¦m in size. Some 60 per cent of the gold occurs in particles greater than 1000 ¦m in size. This characteristic ensures that the mineralisation is very challenging to both sample and evaluate. Diamond drilling provides a measure of geological structure, but is a poor measure of in situ grade, understating it by up to 75 per cent. Drilling combined with on-reef development, bulk sampling and geological interpretation has been used to define Indicated Mineral Resources. For grade control, a balance had to be sought between sample representivity, cost, turn around time and practicality. Sampling of extreme nugget effect deposits generally requires the use of bulk sampling in order to be representative. However, the cost and turn around time is significant. As a result, a 50 kg micro-bulk sampling system has been introduced that attempts to overcome these problems by providing a fast, practical method that can discriminate between ore and waste. As the mine passes into production, grade control will increasingly become dependent upon geological data collection and interpretation.

Waste fill is sorted in resuing, which is a form of cut-and-fill scoping employed in narrow veins.

The Bureau of Mines conducted studies to compare the effectiveness of the cross-measure borehole system with that of surface gob holes on two successively mined retreating longwalls in the Lower Kittanning Coalbed. Only the cross-measure system was in operation on panel A; on panel B, both systems were in operation. In addition, the cross-measure bore-holes on panel B were drilled parallel to the face, whereas those on panel A were drilled at a 45O angle with respect to the longwall axis. The studies show that the cross-measure system captured 71 pct of the methane generated by longwall mining on panel A. On panel B, the sur- face gob hole dominated over the cross-measure system for about 700 ft (213 m) after it was intercepted. Beyond that point, the cross-measure system dominated. About 93 pct of the methane generated on panel B was captured by the two systems. Cross-measure boreholes that were drilled parallel to the face were as effective as boreholes oriented 45" with respect to the longwall axis. In addition, they are shorter and require less drilling time. Comparison between observed gas pressure differentials in boreholes and calculated values indicate that boreholes can be shortened further to 140 ft (43 m). Additional studies are needed to verify these calculations.

SHORTAGES of metals and minerals and substitution of less critical materials for those in which a virtual famine exists received detailed and frank discussion at a recent conference in Washington called by Robert E. McConnell, director of the Conservation Section, Office of Production Management. Representatives of the large engineering societies in the United States and O.P.M. department heads participated in the discussion. To open the session Mr. McConnell called upon Zay Jeffries, chairman of the O.P.M. Advisory Committee on Metal Conservation and Substitution, to summarize the present situation. Dr. Jeffries touched briefly on the status of metal shortages, which has already received considerable attention in the popular press, and said that much of the present difficulty was caused by the too-hasty substitution-without sufficient con¬sideration of the immediate conse¬quences-of metals having ordinarily a small yearly consumption, for those having a much larger annual consumption. As a result, all the alloying metals used in alloy-steel manufacture have become scarce, with the exception of molybdenum; further¬more, despite a reserve of 11,000 tons of molybdenum in this country and despite a normal consumption of only about 3500 tons and a prospective annual production rate of 21,000 tons by October, a shortage of molybdenum is possible before this war is over.

A major mud push occurred on the 870 m production level, scraper drift block cave at Dutoitspan diamond mine in November 2011, during which it is estimated that more than 4 400 m3 of mud engulfed the west cave. The production level was successfully evacuated during the mud push with no loss of life or injury to personnel, thanks largely to mine employees being well trained in and adhering to on-mine mud rush evacuation procedures. All access to the west cave was lost as a result of the mud push. Clean-up operations are currently under way to regain access to the production level, to establish the extent of damage to scraper drifts and equipment, and to evaluate what remedial works may be required to resume production. The magnitude of the Dutoitspan mud push necessitated a detailed investigation into the key contributing factors leading up to the incident, which are discussed in this paper. Mud rush mitigation measures in place on scraper drift block caving operations at Dutoitspan, Bultfontein, and Wesselton diamond mines in the Kimberley area are critically reviewed. Recommendations are furthermore made for enhanced mitigation based on mud rush risk profiles derived for different production areas in these old scraper drift block caves. PROMINENCE has been given lately in engineering circles to the question whether an organisation with manifold interests can be as effective as one with a single aim, especially if that single aim be the furtherance of affairs of moment and the welfare of engineers in general. In its earlier days, the A. I. M. E. was forbidden by its constitution to engage in non-technical public affairs, but the members altered the constitution in this respect, in the year 1912, in response to the growing demand that engineers be more human in their interests and that the engineering societies represent them in this respect. Since that time, the activity of mining engineers in public affairs has been growing rapidly, and we are happy that the Institute has been able to render very valuable economic services. Doubtless the greatest public service rendered by engineers in a recent great emergency was the work of the Naval Consulting Board, without which the U. S. Navy would never have been able to enter promptly into service upon our entrance into the war, ,and both Navy and Army would have been a long time without the munitions that came at an early date. We can never forget that this Board was established through the direct activity of the then President of the A. I. M. E., with the hearty cooperation of other national organizations.

BEFORE discussing this subject it is necessary to define somewhat the meaning of the tern metallurgical.. When I was a student at M. I. T. ore-dressing was not thought of as metallurgy in any sense of the word, but it was considered as more closely allied to mining, enabling the miner to market an otherwise unmarketable product, or at least to market it to better advantage. Progress in ore-dressing has gradually allied it more closely with smelting, for at present the raw material received by the smelter is predominantly concentrates and smelting practice has been profoundly affected by the products of the concentrating mill. It is not surprising therefore that in many schools ore-dressing is frankly considered as metallurgy and although there may be some dissenting opinions it will be considered as such in this discussion. Twenty-five years ago at M. I. T. metallography was taught in a few optional lectures. This subject has developed rapidly and been expanded into the new and increasingly important field of physical metallurgy. To many metallurgists the -term metallurgy means only physical metallurgy. OUT of the fabulous iron ranges of Michigan?s Upper Peninsula since Pearl Harbor have come go to the steel mills to become tanks, guns, ships, and other weapons for a United Nations&apos; victory. But the contributions to the war effort, as far as Michigan&apos;s iron country is concerned, do not stop there. The same men who mine iron ore deep inside the earth also are "mining" on top of the ground, gleaning a harvest of scrap iron and steel that is writing a big chapter in the War Production Board&apos;s salvage program. At virtually every mine over an area of a hundred square miles, everyone from the top mine official and straw boss to the man in the dippings is scrap conscious. They know the importance of the ore they mine but they are equally familiar with the importance of iron and steel scrap in war production. The successful job they are doing in salvage is a tribute to the entire Upper Michigan mining industry and to the man who marshaled them into action-John M. Bush, chief of the land department for the Cleveland- Cliffs Iron Co. at Negaunee, and for ten years an A.I.M.E. member. Also, this job should be an inspiration to 611 mining. metallurgical, and petroleum communities as to the latent possibilities of organized scrap recovery.

This paper analyses possible causes for floor heaving in room-and-pillar coal mining. The coal mines are in the southern part of Brazil, where the Barro Branco Coal Seam varies in depth from 20m to 400m, and a very thick volcanic formation overlies part of the sedimentary basin. The erosion of part of the volcanic formation causes this large range of overburden thickness, which formed large V-type valleys. The mine in study is located near the slope of one of these valleys. The mine inclined shaft is at the lower overburden thickness area of the valley and the mining is developing toward the thicker overburden area. The floor heave occurred in the crosscuts, which are parallel to the slope valley direction. Numerical modeling was applied to study the stress distribution around the openings; and fieldwork on the floor heaved entries was carried out. The geometry of mining (pillar and openings width) also was analyzed. The results showed that the very weak rock and the high horizontal stress were the causes of floor heave. As the mining gets near the valley slope, the stress distribution around the crosscuts changes considerably. In addition, the stress distribution changes as the mining goes far from the crosscut. THE iron and steel activities of this meeting opened on Monday morning with the steel melting session," with G. B. Waterhouse in the chair and A. L. Feild as vice-chairman. N. A. Zeigler&apos;s paper, on "Gases Extracted From Iron Carbon Alloys by Vacuum Melbing," created considerable interest and the discussion in general was most favorable. H. W. Gillett and Louis Jordan of the Bureau questioned the method of analysis for oxygen and C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., I , expressed their surprise at the large amount of oxygen with the high ,carbon alloys. Whether the gases found existed as gas in blowholes or as oxide inclusions was also a moot point. A paper by C. D. King, on "Basic Open-Hearth Yields," was an extremely interesting and valuable contribution. It was discussed by C. E.Kinney and A. L. Feild and numerous questions were asked throughout the presentation. Mr. King then presented a critical analysis of the losses together with novel methods of calculating them. A paper by C. H. Herty, Jr., and J. M. Gaines, Jr., on "Unreduced Oxides in Pig Iron and Their Elimination in the Basic Open-Hearth Furnace," followed. The question of silicates and oxides in pig iron created much discussion, notably by Henry Hanson and W. J. MacKenzie, who gave figures on chipping cost as a function of blast-furnace practice.

A microcomputer based control system has been developed and implemented at ZC Mines (now Pasminco Mining). The control system maximises throughput at a product size set point while maintaining a &quot;safe&quot; cyclone underflow and mill operating pulp density.To characterise mill and cyclone operation over a range of ore types, 60 circuit surveys were carried out by ZC Mines personnel over a period of four months. The data for each test were model fitted to check for data consistency and to accurately estimate circulating loads.The model fitted results were combined with instrument readings (including in-stream analysis probe assays) and the data checked for ability to predict key variables such as product size and underflow density from measurable inputs.In the resulting control scheme, panicle size and underflow density are not monitored directly, but are predicted by regression equation models based on directly measured variables. The tonnage control loop uses a dynamic model to maximise responsiveness.The system provides a data log output to an mM compatible personal computer at programmable intervals. Comparative data logging over a period demonstrates substantially smoothed circuit performance.The grinding control system was originally implemented using Fischer and Porter micro-DCI controllers. The program has also been implemented on a distributed control system using a sequence oriented programming language.
