HE twins most commonly formed in bcc metals may be described as regions of the crystal in which a particular set of (112) planes is homogeneously sheared by 0.707 in the appropriate ( 111) direction. A similar twin-related crystal could be produced by a shear of 1.414 in the reverse (111) direction but twinning by this large displacement has never been reported. Thus, twinning is unidirectional and a shear stress which produces twinning does not do so when its sense is reversed. The sense of a shear Stress is reversed when the loading is changed from tension to compression, or vice versa. Consequently, for a given orientation of a crystal relative to a uniaxial stress, only a fraction of the twelve (112) twinning systems are geometrically capable of operating in tension, and the remaining systems may operate only in compression. Therefore, when twinning is involved, there are expected to be differences in behavior between crystals tested in uniaxial tension and those tested in compression. This has been verified experimentally by Reid et 01.&apos; and Sherwood el al.,&apos; although a critical stress criterion was not encountered. Furthermore, twinning stresses in colmbium," tungten, tantalum,&apos; irn,&apos; i-Fe,\ nd molybdenum7 single crystals have been shown to depend critically on orientation, although again twinning did not occur at a critical value of the macroscopic shear stress. However, when twinning occurs, it generally does so on the most highly stressed systems, 1--4&apos;6&apos;8&apos;9 implying that the stress level does have some relevance to twin formation. In view of the large orientation dependence of twinning in bee single crystals, it might be expected that such an effect would be present in poly crystalline material which possesses a recrystallisation texture. Indeed, riestner" showed that the twinning stress in tension is very orientation-sensitive it1 <&apos;grain-oriented, silicon-iron;" this material possessed a very strong t c m^ii a nnr x_____k . i-_ii__ ri_______j. _x r»i_._:__i preferred orientation obtained by secondary recrystallisation. Reid et a/.&apos; observed a marked difference in the tensile and compressive yield stresses of polycrys-talline columbium which was rationalised in terms of the effect of a preferred orientation on twinning. No other such illformation is known to the authors. Several investigations of twinning in polycrystalline bcc metals have been reported in which the possible existence of a preferred orientation was not even mentioned. It is the purpose of this paper to show that there is a strong effect of texture on twinning in polycrystalline iron, and to poilt out the difficulty in eliminating preferred orientation in recrystallised metals. 1. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD Material and Specimen Preparation. Low-carbon, high-purity iron was obtained from the National Physical Laboratory in the form of $-in. diam rod which had been cold-swaged from a diam of 1 in. The composition of the material is given in Table I. The as-received bar was cold-swaged directly to 0.185 in. diam from which cylindrical tensile and compression specimens were machined. Specimen geometry is illustrated in Fig. 1. The gage length was 0.30 in. long and 0.10 in. diam; it should be noted that, apart from the extra heads which are necessary for tensile loading, the geometry and dimensions of the two types of specimen are identical. The specimens were heat treated either by sequence A or B outlined in Table 11. The essential difference between these two treatments is that in one case the material was repeatedly cycled through the y- to a-phase change in order to produce grains of almost random orientation ("random" iron)

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Eng(Mining Engineering) degreeAfriTin Mining Limited plans to reopen the Uis tin mine in Namibia and establish a pilot processing plant for phase 1 of the Uis tin project, which is scheduled to commence in the last quarter of 2018 . A mining plan is required for phase 1 to supply the new pilot processing plant with 500 kt of run-of-mine ore per annum, for a period of 5 years. New geological mapping and three-dimensional modelling of the mining area were utilized to identify the most optimal mining locations that require low initial waste stripping. An open-pit mining method was selected to target the surface outcrops of the pegmatite orebodies. The mine design criteria were determined and used as input to generate the mine design by utilizing professional engineering software. The mine design was optimized and an overall stripping ratio of 0.81 was achieved. A 5-year production schedule was developed for the mine design according to quarterly periods of three months. A fixed production target of 125 kt of ore was assigned to the quarterly periods, and a ramp-up production target of 65 kt of ore was assigned for the first period. The mobile mining equipment requirements were calculated, and recommendations were made for implementing the 5-year mining plan. IntroductionAfriTin Mining Limited is the owner of the Uis tin project in Namibia and plans to reopen the Uis tin mine, which is located near the town of Uis, approximately 164 km north of Swakopmund. The Uis tin mine was owned and operated by Imkor Tin, a subsidiary of Iscor South Africa. Mining commenced in 1958, and the operation was closed in 1991. Steffen Robertson & Kirsten (SRK) defined the life of mine (LOM) plan for the historical Uis mine in 1989. The SRK report estimated the historical resources and reserves, which consisted of sixteen cassiterite-bearing pegmatite orebodies. SRK developed the most economical pit designs to provide the highest average tin grade at the lowest practical waste stripping ratio. Exploration data from the SRK report of 1989 was used extensively throughout this study, since no new exploration drilling has been conducted. The pegmatites are present as large, subvertical and outcropping veins up to 100 m in thickness. Once phase 1 is operational, mining will be conducted using conventional open pit mining methods. Initial production will be from exposed pegmatite veins in the old mine workings. AfriTin plans to establish a pilot processing plant by the end of 2018 to beneficiate run-of-mine ore at a rate of 500 kt per annum."

Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material&apos;s low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. "The Phu Kham Cu-Au mine in Laos is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. The deposit is a complex and low grade Cu-Au porphyry ore. The rougher feed has a particle size distribution of 80% passing 110 µm, and the rougher concentrate is reground for cleaning to 80% passing 25 µm. The Cu losses in the cleaning circuit are primarily in the <12 µm fraction. A randomised paired ON-OFF test of magnetic conditioning in one of the two parallel cleaner 1 circuits was undertaken. The results showed that with magnetic conditioning there was approximately a 10% reduction in the <12 µm Cu distribution in the cleaner 1 tail to a 98% level of confidence. The Cu distribution in the <12µm fraction is a less variable measure of changes in the <12µm Cu recovery, therefore, this was used to evaluate the impact of magnetic conditioning. Subsequently, magnetic conditioning was installed in both cleaner 1 circuits and the plant results monitored after this installation. Comparing the plant results immediately before and after this installation showed that there was a 20% reduction in <12µm Cu losses to the cleaner tail. INTRODUCTION The Cu-Au, Phu Kham Mine (PKM) is located within PanAust's Phu Bia Mining Contract Area in Laos, approximately 140 kilometres from the capital city, Vientiane. PKM is PanAust's flagship operation and the significant cash flow generated by PKM has supported PanAust’s growth, while contributing to a strong balance sheet. PKM comprises an open-pit mine and a conventional milling and flotation operation that produces and exports a Cu and precious metals concentrate. The concentrate contains around 23% Cu, 6 ppm Au and up to 35 ppm silver. Process Overview The PKM deposit consists of complex heterogeneous mineralogy horizons of Cu-Au stockwork and skarn mineralisation. It contains areas of soft-leached zones, overlying transition zones and supergene chalcocite dominant secondary Cu mineralisation and clay-rich gangue. Areas of high As and Zn also pose a challenge in treating the highly variable ore. In addition, hardness of the ore increases with deposit depth. The ROM is hauled to a primary gyratory crusher to produce a coarse ore stockpile with size distribution suitable for the 13 MW semi-autogenous mill. The SAG product feeds two parallel ball mills each equipped with a cyclone cluster producing a product particle size distribution of 80% passing 110 µm. The conventional flotation circuit consists of two parallel rougher banks. The rougher concentrates feed the regrind cyclone where the underflow is split and reports to two parallel, 3MW, M10000 IsaMills. The regrind mill discharge combines with the regrind cyclone overflow with a product particle size distribution 80% passing 25 µm and reports to the Jameson cell."

"Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(&lt;212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. "Colorado School of MinesResearchers at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) have developed computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models to study gas distributions and explosion and fire hazards in longwall gobs. In underground coal mines, methane continuously emitted from surrounding strata mixes with air from active mine workings and may form explosive gas zones (EGZs). Some western United States coal mines are also prone to spontaneous combustion (spon com). Insight into oxygen concentrations within the gob is crucial for assessing spon com hazards and mitigation strategies. Nitrogen injection used in conjunction with progressive gob sealing can reduce EGZs and spon com hazards by forming a dynamic seal that separates the methane in the gob from the air that ingresses from the face. This paper describes CFD modeling simulations studying the formation of such dynamic seals by optimizing the nitrogen injection locations. The impact of nitrogen on oxygen ingress and formation of EGZs is discussed. Optimum nitrogen injection quantities and injection locations were determined. Dynamic seal formation is most effective if the headgate nitrogen injection locations are split between the first crosscut inby the face and a second location about 300 m (1,000 ft) further inby. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall coal mine ventilation systems are designed to dilute hazardous gases and to provide breathable air to miners working in the area. Methane gas is liberated as the mining process extracts the coal and disturbs the surrounding strata. Methane mixes with the ventilation air and often produces explosive gas zones (EGZs) within longwall gobs (Brune 2013). Past CFD modeling research of underground coal mine ventilation systems has shown the effects of face air quantity on EGZs (Worrall 2012) and nitrogen injection to control spon com (Balusu et al. 2005; Ren et al. 2012; Ren et al. 2011; Smith and Yuan, 2008; Yuan and Smith, 2014). Other modeling approaches include network ventilation models of oxygen ingress (Dziurzynski and Wasilewski, 2012), and coupled Linear Network CFD algorithms (Wedding 2014). In a project sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), CSM researchers are using Fluent®, a CFD software package by ANSYS, Inc., to model gas compositions and flows in underground longwall gobs. Figure 1 shows a progressively sealed gob with a U-type ventilation system in a three entry development. As the longwall advances, seals are constructed along the headgate in the crosscuts between the center entry and the gob. Additional gob isolation seals are built to block off the headgate entries inby the face. Nitrogen is injected through the seals in the first two crosscuts on the headgate side and at the first crosscut inby the face on the tailgate side, as shown in Figure 1."

Mining law is essentially a branch of the law of real property. It concerns acquisition of property for extracting contained minerals, and the rights, privileges and duties that fall upon the holder thereof once the rights are acquired Accordingly, this section focuses on the procedures to be followed in acquiring state. federal and private lands, and defines briefly the nature of the rights obtained. The mining laws of Canada and Mexico are summarized, and the related subjects of minerals taxation and governmental regulation are discussed briefly. This section is not intended to be the basis for legal decisions. Rather, its purpose is to provide the engineer with an understanding of basic principles and procedures. For a detailed treatise of mining law, reference can be made to The American Law o] Mining, a five-volume set edited by the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation. The law changes constantly, especially that based on federal and state statutes, and the reader is cautioned to be alert for subsequent modifications of statutes, regulations and case law. 2.1-PRELIMINARY LAND-STATUS CHECK Often, after completion of area reconnaissance, or perhaps after receipt of a submittal, a specific more localized target area will become of interest. Usually, an intensive exploration program comprising detailed surface mapping, sampling, geophysical prospecting and drilling will be required before the mineral potential of the ground can be properly evaluated. Before an investment of this magnitude is made, however, it is advisable to obtain rights to mine ore from the property. Otherwise, knowledge of the exploration activity might greatly inflate land values, or speculators or competing mining concerns might step in. Hence, as a general rule, a land-acquisition program should be undertaken before an intensive exploration project is begun. The first step in such a program is to make a land-status check to determine whether the subject lands are available and, if so, from whom they can be obtained and by what means. 2.1.1-BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT RECORDS In those states which contain large areas of federal land, basically (he western states, the primary informational source is the records of the Bureau of Land Management. These may t)e examined at the land office having jurisdiction over federal lands in the area of interest. The records for Montana and North and South Dakota are kept at the Billings (Mont ) land office; Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas, Cliejenne, Wyo.; New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, Santa Fe, N M ; northern Alaska, Fairbanks, and southern, Anchorage; Utah, Salt Lake City; Nevada, Reno; Arizona, Phoenix; Colorado, Denver. "A multipurpose program for a hand-held programmable TJ-59 calculator and PC-100C printer facilitates the evaluation of various mineral processing tests and the calculation of mass and metal balances. Its application is demonstrated by some example problems. Detailed user instructions are given for each application.IntroductionThe program listed in Appendix I is written for a programmable Texas Instruments TI-591 PC-100C calculator I printer combination. The strain rate dependence of the flow stress of the eutectoid Zn-Al alloy has been determined as a function of mechanical processing, microstructure, and temperature. The best superplastic properties result from the ultrafine, equiaxed structure produced by solution treatment and isothermal transformation at 0°C. Lamellar structures produced by isothermal transformation and coarse equiaxed structures produced by annealing also exhibit strain rate sensitivity in excess of 0.5, but at higher stresses and lower strain rates than the finest structure. Solution treatment and isothermal transformation eliminate the effect of prior processing history. Small composition variations in the binary alloy do not influence the mechanical properties. Below the eutectoid transformation temperature (.275C) increasing temperature lowers the flow stress at all strain rates. The data do not favor any of the present proposals for the mechanism of superplastic flow. ALLOYS of zinc and aluminum, near the eutectoid composition, have been investigated for: 1) the flow stress-strain rate and elongation behavior,1, 2) the transformation kinetics,3 and 3) structure,3"5 but the structure sensitivity of the mechanical properties is poorly understood. Using a near eutectoid alloy water-quenched from 380°C, Backofen et aL2 estab- high and increases with increasing strain rate. They found a correlation between strain rate sensitivity and tensile elongation as expected from the increased resistance to necking that a high strain rate sensitivity provides.296 The large elongation at high strain rates is attractive for metal forming. Since most other superplastic alloys7-l3 do not show high strain rate sensitivity at such a high strain rate (for the exception see Ref. 12) there is the possibility of a unique deformation mechanism for this alloy. The sensitivity of the mechanical properties of the eutectoid alloy to thermal history1 suggests a structure sensitivity that has not been demonstrated. Gar-wood and Hopkins3 identified a lamellar product for material transformed between 200" and 260°C. The size of the lamellae decreased with decreasing temperature. They also demonstrated that an unresolved transformation product formed below 200°C. A granular two-phase material was resolved for specimens quenched to below 150°C by Mitbauer and sauerwald4 who observed coarsening of the structure after annealing. The role of grain boundaries in superplastic deformation is suggested by the strong effect of grain refinement in encouraging this phenomenon at high strain rateS7-11, 13 and is emphasized in several proposals about rnechanism7, 8, 12 and in a theory14 of high-temperature deformation. Alden8 showed metallographic evidence that grain boundary sliding is occurring extensively at strain rates where m is large but less at high strain rates where normal plasticity is observed.
