As available space in urban centers becomes more scarce, builders and developers are increasingly turning to vacant, existing structures to meet cities' growing needs. The developers of City Ridge Roadside Development and North America Sekisui House (NASH) - - found a suitable site for their "urban village" at the former Fannie Mae headquarters complex on Wisconsin Ave. NW in Washington, D.C., which had been vacated in early 2018. The urban village will consist of eight new structures centered around the building that currently sits on the site. All told, the project will include 687 residential units, a 150-room hotel, over 150,000 sq ft (13,935 sq m) of retail space, and 62,000 sq ft (5,760 sq m) of office space. A below-grade parking structure will extend across most of the footprint. The Fannie Mae building, which was designed in the Colonial Revival style to mimic the Governor's Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia, was named a historical landmark following a request from the development team. The central portion of its existing masonry structure was built in 1956 on pile caps with small-diameter cast-in-place piles. Two wings, which were added in 1962, were built on belled caissons. There are three levels above grade and one below.

It is desired to call the attention of young men who have had technical training and experience to the fact that their abilities can best be put at the service of the country by selecting a branch of service in which their special qualifications will be of the greatest use. The submarine force of the United States Navy requires the services, as officers on board submarines, of young men who have had technical training in mechanical and electrical engineering and who have had experience in these professions. It is intended to enroll a number of such men as provisional ensigns in the Naval Reserve Force, give then a course of instruction in deck duties at Annapolis and a course in submarine work at New London. Those who successfully pass these courses will then be sent on hoard submarines for regular duty. It is requested that any men who desire this duty and who are qualified as below outlined send their names and addresses to the Commander Submarine Force, U. S. S. Mr. Natta graduated in 1973 from Colorado School of Mines with a B.S. in Metalurgical Engineering and a M.S. in Mineral Economics. Since 1974, he has been employed by Utah International having spent 5 years in San Francisco as Senior Market Analyst. In this capacity he was responsible for market development efforts for Utah's U. S. coal reserves. Recently, he was transferred to Craig, Colorado, as Administrative Manager of Utah's Trapper Mine. In this position, he is responsible for purchasing, warehousing, accounting and sales contract administration. The second speaker was Brucks Mitchell, President, Human Resources Management, Inc. Richardson, Texas. Subject-"Making Unions Unnecessary in the Coal Industry." Mr. Mitchell has a B.A. degree in English-Oklahoma State University. M.B.A. degree in Organizational Behavior-Southern Methodist University. Ph.D Candidate - Organizational Behavior - North Texas State University. The twenty-eighth regular meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute, which was held jointly with the Utah Section of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, was called to order at eleven o'clock A. M., Monday, March 11, 1929, President Otto Herres presiding. Introductory remarks were made by John M. Boutwell, Chairman of the Utah Section of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, who outlined the intent and purpose of the joint meeting, and its co-operative program. He spoke of the in- creased recognition being given to men in the engineering profession by the public, which has recently been manifested by the election of President Hoover, an engineer of outstanding ability, and the re-election of Governor Dern to the Governorship of the State of Utah. He then introduced Governor Dern, a fellow member, to make the address of welcome. Governor Dern assured the meeting a hearty welcome. He spoke of Utah as one of the important mining states of the Union, particularly in metal mining; the magnitude of Utah as a coal mining state being limited only by its market; of the enormous coal resources of Utah, and the problems of the coal mining industry.

This paper presents correlations for predicting the solu-lility, swelling and viscosity behavior of CO2-crude oil sys8i.m~. The correlations were developed from experimental data obtained by the authors. These data are also presented. The data were determined by measuring the properties of mixtures of CO, and nine different oils. Experiinental conditions covered a range of 100 to 250°F and pressures up to 2,300 psia. Properties predicted by the correlations have average deviations, expressed as per cent of experimental value, of 2 per cent for solubility, 0.5 per cent for swelling and 12 per cent for viscosity. INTRODUCTION Interest in CO2 injection as an oil recovery process has led to the development of performance prediction methods which can be applied to specific reservoirs.1 iS To use these performance prediction methods, it is necessary to know the solubility, swelling and viscosity properties of CO2-crude oil mixtures at reservoir conditions. Some information on these properties has appeared in the literature; however, this information did not cover the range of different oils and conditions needed to prepare generalized correlations for reservoir engineering purposes. Consequently, an experimental program was undertaken to collect the data needed. The data obtained and the correlations developed from the data are described in the following sections of this paper. SOLUBILITY OF CO2 IN CRUDE OILS CO2 solubility data in the literature come from six principal sources. The solubility prediction method of Welker and Dunlop3 is limited to 80F. The information in Ref. 4 is of two types: the first includes binary and ternary mixtures of CO, and light hydrocarbons (C1 to C6), and the second gives data for CO1 and heavy hydrocarbons for a temperature range of 40 to 90F. Ref. 5 contains a KCO2 chart for systems whose convergence pressure is 4,000 psia. The KCO2's are based mainly on CO2-natural gas mixtures. Poettmann's work covered CO2 solubility in one condensate and one crude oil6,7 Ja-coby and Rzasa measured CO? solubilities as a function of pressure and temperature for two natural gas-absorber oil mixtures and two natural gas-crude oil mixtures.'8 CO, concentration in these four systems was fixed at 5 mol per cent. The work reported in this paper extends CO, solubility data to a variety of different crude oil types in a temperature range from 110 to 250F and pressures up to 2,300 psia. The experimental procedure used by the authors to obtain the solubility data consisted of combining known amounts of pure CO, and crude oil in a visual cell at a fixed temperature and measuring the bubble point of the mixture. Measurements were made for a total of 40 different CO2-oil mixtures and the results are shown in Table 2. The mixtures included nine different oils (seven crude oils and two refined oils) whose properties are listed in Table 1. All nine oils had vapor pressures less than 1 atm at the experimental temperatures. Consequently, analysis of the bubble-point vapor showed a CO, concentration over 99 mol per cent. At no time during these experiments was a second, more dense, liquid phase observed. The solubility correlation which was developed from the data in Table 2 is presented in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. In these figures, solubility is expressed as xco2 the mol fraction of CO, in the CO2-oil mixture. Fig. 1 shows solubility as a function of CO2 fugacity6 and temperature. Fig. 2 shows the same solubility data expressed as a function of saturation pressure and temperature. The solubility shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is for an oil whose UOP characterization factor is 11.7. UOP characterization factors of crude oils can be determined from Ref. 10 if the viscosity and APT gravity of the oil are known. The influence of partial decomposition to high temperature bainite on reaction kinetics at a lower temperature has been studied in two alloy steels. Reaction at the lower temperature is retarded by the prior treatment, and the extent of decomposition may be reduced. Interpretation of these results is based on a mechanism involving a limitation in the nucleation and growth of bainite plates. OF the major transformations in steel, the characteristics and general behavior of the bainite reaction are probably the least understood and appreciated. Limitations of space preclude a critical evaluation of the present status of the bainite transformation in this presentation; however, such a treatment will shortly appear elsewhere. Only the salient features pertinent to the present investigation will be introduced briefly here. Although the reaction curve for the formation of bainite is similar to that for a nucleation and growth process, other kinetic features are more in keeping with the martensitic mode of transformation. A definite temperature exists above which austenite will not transform to bainite.1-5 his temperature, which has been designated B., is determined by the composition of the austenite. Unlike other nucleation and growth processes, the amount of austenite transformed to .bainite is a function of reaction temperature. The extent of decomposition increases from 0 at H. to 100 pct at some lower temperature.' , This lower temperature will be designated B1 and appears to be relatively insensitive to austenite composition.% 5 The similarity in the effect of reaction temperature on the bainite and martensite transformations serves to emphasize the close connection between these two decomposition processes. Austenite decomposition in the bainite range proceeds without partition of the alloying elements.8-11 Partition of carbon has been proposed" primarily on the basis that partial transformation to bainite lowers M, and increases the amount of austenite retained at room temperature. Carbon enrichment resuslting from such partition has been employed to explain the influence of reaction temperature on the extent of decomposition.'" It should be noted, however, that no enrichment has been detected experimentally in high carbon steels.1,14,15 Lattice-parameter measurements of retained austenite in steels containing 0.3 to 0.4 pct C have indicated carbon enrichment, 3,10-18 although the split indicative of a high carbon martensite has not been reported. Carbon enrichment, if it does occur, must be highly localized around the bainite plates. Therefore, carbon enrichment does not account for the influence of temperature on the progress of the bainite reaction."' Thermal history is known to influence the martensite transformation through stabilization.20,21 No similar phenomenon in the bainite transformation has been reported. Materials and Procedure Two triple-alloy steels were chosen for this investigation. Their compositions were as given in Table I. These steels were chosen because the pearlite reaction did not interfere with the bainite reaction. Steel K was received in the cast condition and forged from 2 in. square bars to 1/2 x1 3/4 in. plates. The 4340 was received as 11/4 in. hot-rolled rounds. Both steels were homogenized in vacuum for one week at 2300°F in order to minimize segregation. A quenching dilatometer similar to that described by Flinn, Cook, and Fellows" was employed for the kinetic measurements. Dimensional changes were detected by a differential transformer coupled with a high speed recorder. The dilatometer was mounted so that it could be transferred to any one of three furnaces: a nitrogen-atmosphere austenitiz-ing furnace and two salt-bath furnaces for isothermal transformation. Dilatometer specimens were 1/32 x 1/4x 1/2 in. with a gage length of 1.4 in. All specimens were nickel plated in order to minimize decarburization during austenitizing. The austenitiz-ing conditions consisted of 10 min at the temperatures given above. Austenitizing temperatures were controlled to 210°F and transformation temperatures to ±3ºF. The precision of the dimensional measurements was estimated to be ± 5 x105 in. per in. Measurements made with starch ~~~~s indicate that the Presence of starch serves to depress the streaming potential of a clay mud system. Measurements with pure starch slurries show that the addition of NaCl or CaO reduces the streaming potential significantly. The addition of NaOH, however, causes only a minor reduction in potential even when there are large changes in mud resistivity. INTRODUCTION In their excellent study of the streaming potential, Hill and Anderson' proposed that the presence of conductive solids within the filter medium will reduce the generated potential. This theory was demonstrated with measurements on shaly sandstone cores having various "b" factors; the cores with the higher negative b factors showed markedly lower potentials. (The factor b was originally defined by Hill and Milburn2 in an expression relating the resistivity of a shaly sandstone to the resistivity of the interstitial water: log F, = log F,, + b (log 100R,)'. 'he factor b, therefore, is a measure of the contribution of the conductive solids to the total conductivity of the sample. It has been found experimentally to be directly related to the amount of chemically exchangeable ion per unit pore volume.) In the logical extension of this hypothesis to the streaming potential created by filtration through mud cakes, they suggested that the presence of nonconductive starch in a drilling mud would have the opposite effect; i.e., it would cause the streaming POtential to be increased. The high streaming potentials that they observed with lime muds were attributed to this cause. A cross-plot of some of their results which are relevant to this discussion is given in Fig. 1. The lime-mud curves and untreated-mud curve are taken from curves given in their paper. The gyp-mud line was estimated from their statement that the measured streaming potential for gyp muds in the range of 1.5 to 2.0 ohm-m was approximately 18 mv/1,000 psi. These gyp-mud potentials were the lowest that they reported for any of the bentonitic-clay muds, and were the only ones which were less than the untreated-mud potentials. This very low streaming potential of gyp muds has also been observed in field studies.' By way of comparison, a U. of Texas publication4 gives the approxi-ate compositions for lime and gyp muds shown in Table 1. These materials are added to a bentonitic-clay mud base. It can be seen that both of these muds contain significant amounts of calcium salts and that the gyp mud has the higher concentration of starch. It would appear from this and from the data shown in Fig. 1 that starch may well be the cause of a streaming-potential reduction, rather than a potential increase. EXPERIMENTAL A series of streaming-potential experiments has been performed using a cell of a design similar to that reported by Wyllie.5 Calomel electrodes were used in both the mud slurry and the filtrate. Pressure in the cell was generated with high-pressure nitrogen. The primary objective of the investigation was to determine the effect of starch on the potential. Five different slurries were made which ranged in composition from untreated ben-tonitic mud (Baroid Aquagel) to a pure starch suspension (Baroid Im-permex). The intermediate slurries were prepared by mixing together a 9-lb/bbl clay mud with a 12-lb/bbl starch suspension in the ratios 1:3, 1:1 and 3:1. When starch was used alone, it was necessary to use an 18-Ib/bbl mixture, since leaner mixtures would not form a suitable filter cake. The clay mud used in the experiments was aged for three months before use. In addition to this series of measurements on the starch-clay mud mixtures, other experiments were performed to determine the effect on the potential of the absolute starch and Aquagel concentration, and the effect of adding various chemicals. Thee Brightwater water treatment facilities, currently scheduled to be completed in 2010 and begin operating in 2011, will serve the northern part of King County, WA. The facility includes a new treatment plant and extensive conveyance system consisting of more than 21 km (13 miles) of influent and effluent conveyance tunnels and five portals. The majority of the conveyance system tunnels are mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and microtunnel boring machines (MTBM). Tunnel and portal construction is divided into three main contracts. The Ballinger Way receiving portal, constructed under the central tunnel contract, is the terminus for the BT-3 leg of the central contract and the BT-4 terminus of the west contract. The shaft has a 7.3-m (24-ft) finished inside diameter (ID) to accommodate removal of the central project TBM and the west contract TBM and extends to a depth of 66 m (216 ft) below grade through a complex and challenging soil profile characterized by multiple ground water tables. Vinci Grand Projects/Parsons/Frontier-Kemper Constructors (VCFK) was the joint venture team for the Ballinger Way portal. Frontier-Kemper was responsible for the shaft sinking. VCFK evaluated either slurry wall techniques or ground freezing for earth support during excavation of the portal and liner installation. The selection process took into account the vertical depth, cost, past practice, geology, water tables and a 9-m- (30-ft-) thick zone of contaminated soil at the top of the shaft. Ground freezing, which would also act as a hydraulic barrier, was deemed the better option for this project. The contract was awarded to New Jersey-based geotechnical contractor Moretrench. Typically, frozen walls, by design, key into an underlying cutoff. At the Ballinger Way portal, however, the [ ] freeze bottomed out in a substantially thick stratum consisting of predominantly clay, but with some inclusions of permeable soil that indicated significant ground water pressures. To ensure stable conditions at the bottom of the shaft, Moretrench, which also specializes in dewatering, designed and installed a perimeter array of deep wells to temporarily depressurize the permeable soils. Ferruginous manganese deposits have been known at Ripon Hills since the late 1950s. The main group of deposits occur in an area 6 km by 5 km and these were extensively investigated by Longreach Metals N.L. during1971 and 1972 for possible commercial exploitation.Ripon Hills is a dissectcd fault plateau 350 m above sea level formed by the uplift of a block of gently dipping Proterozoic shales, cherts, and dolomite. The plateau consists of chert breccia which is underlain by massive dolomite. The shales which are ferruginous and manganiferous overlie the chert breccia but are now only preserved, in places, in the broad depression and valleys of the plateau.The ore deposits occur as supergene replacement of the shales and were investigated by geological mapping, grid percussion and diamond drilling, and bulk beneficiation testing. Iron and manganese oxides erraticallyreplace Shale accompanied by the leaching of other minerals. The ore is composed of fine grained pyrolusite intergrown with fine grained hematite and locally containing extensively altered bixbyite and braunite. Thegangue mineral is mainly kaolin.The average grade, using a 15 per cent Mn cutoff, was 19 4 per cent Mn and 25·9 per cent Fe for a combined drill-proven, indicated, and inferred tonnage of 56,000,000 tonnes. The average depth of this mineralization from the surface is 11 m. Using a cutoff grade of 20 per cent Mn the average grade was 24·6 per cent Mn and 23·0 per cent Fe for a combined tonnage of 12,000,000 tonnes to an average depth of 8 m.The substantial drop in reserves occurs because a high proportion of the mineralized material contains less than 20 per cent Mn.It was shown that whereas the lower grade ore, despite erratic fluctuations in grade, could be beneficiated to specification grade by crushing, screening, and conductivity ore sorting, the higher grade ore could be beneficiatedto specification grade by crushing and screening only. The utilization of the higher grade ore was considered to constitute a more viable operation.There is potential for high grade manganese ore to be discovered in the Ripon Hills area at the contact of chert breccia and underlying dolomite.

Direct transfer, or community translocation, comprises salvage and replacement of intact æsodsÆ of vegetation together with underlying soil. It has been applied to New Zealand mine sites restoration of native grasslands, wetlands, scrub lands, and forest. It is an equivalent technique to æinstant lawn or tree gardenÆ, commonly used in urban landscaping. Two to six m2 scoops of vegetation, with up to 0.7 m of soil attached, and including root plates of trees and shrubs, are relocated from stripped areas ahead of mining to sites prepared for restoration. Direct transfer uses hydraulic excavators or face shovels and dump trucks, possibly with the aid of bulldozers and other earthmoving machinery. The main advantages of direct transfer, compared with sowing or planting systems for mine site restoration, are the recycling of plant and soil materials which were often wasted by burying under overburden materials, a significantly faster revegetation process, and restoration of the whole ecosystem (plants, animals, birds, invertebrates, and microbes). The main disadvantages are higher costs of stripping and dumping, a greater degree of machine operator skill required, and scheduling becomes critically important. To illustrate the key principles, this paper gives examples of successes and failures of the technique for a variety of New Zealand mining situations. Direct transfer has been successful for a range of communities, from fern wetland and sub-alpine tussock grasslands to 5 m-tall beech forest under storey and seral shrub land, and from temperate to sub-alpine climates. Successful examples show both rapid recovery of indigenous vegetative cover and conservation of habitat for birds and invertebrates. Failures have resulted from excessive death of plants because of inadequate soil salvage depths, acidic leachates, inappropriate handling of stripped sods by inexperienced machinery operators, or prolonged drought conditions immediately following relocation. Change in plant species composition has occurred where clumps of vegetation are too far apart, or shifted plants were too small - in both cases invasive weeds have smothered the original vegetation. Changes in hydrology can also have significant impacts. Our experience indicates that the advantages of direct transfer far outweigh the disadvantages and is now used as the preferred restoration method, where practicable, at mines where it has been trialled.

INTRODUCTION The design/build (D/B) philosophy of contract delivery is neither new nor unusual when it comes to at-grade, elevated or high-rise structures. But when it comes to constructing underground facilities, there were no examples to be followed in early 90sin the continental United States or its territories. When DMJM+HARRIS was selected as general architectural and engineering consultant for the Tren Urbano (TU) project in Puerto Rico, one of the requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for funding commitment was to use TU as a demonstration project utilizing design/build contract delivery method. Now fifteen years later, New York City Transit (NYCT) has instituted a similar requirement for their first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) contract for the Second Avenue Subway. As with most construction mega-projects, lots of things have happened and there were several lessons learned from the TU experience that are now being applied to Second Avenue. Both of these projects require building tunnels and underground transit facilities in heavily traveled corridors of an urban city, in the vicinity of active business and commercial enterprises. To enhance the challenge, there are noise and vibration sensitive and historic urban receptors either over or along both the transit corridors. Column free Tren Urbano station caverns over18 m (60 ft.) wide were built in soft ground conditions within 3.6 m (12 ft.) of the surface under an aging heavy utility corridor, while NYCT tunnels with station structures stretching the limits of rock caverns to 34.8 m (100 ft.), were planned in rocky geology with the presence of shear and fault zones and some mixed face conditions. BACKGROUND During the early period of design/build experimentation, the speed with which the contract procurement packages could be put together enabled the owners to take advantage of the major efforts underway to rebuild the infrastructure that was suffering from post-World War II neglect. Use of design/build for new starts was unheard of and most of the projects were smaller in nature in order to allow the methodology to be tested. It has been noted in recent years that the pillars in some bord-and-pillar workings scale or spall. In due course this process may result in the collapse of the affected panels. This paper presents a methodology for assessing the long-term behaviour of such workings, employing a simple model of pillar deterioration by scaling. It is assumed that scaling causes a gradual reduction in pillar width, hence the safety factor of pillars reduces in time. It is also postulated that the process of scaling will be arrested if the coal rubble around the pillar reaches a critical height. The probability that the pillars will survive for a certain period of time, or indefinitely, can be estimated. This can be accomplished by using the log-normal distribution proposed by Salamon and Munro4todescribe the distribution of the apparent safety factor values at failure. If an estimate of the rate of scaling is known, it is also possible to quantify, using a Monte Carlo technique, the expected life of the pillars. The method also facilitates pillar design by specifying a probability of survival for a given number of years or, alternatively, for an indefinite period. Using the limited pool of available data, analyses show that the proposed model does not appear to be inconsistent with observed behaviour of pillars in the Vaal Basin. The crucial parameter is the rate of scaling. Back calculations from eleven cases suggest that the rate of spalling in the Vaal Basin is about 0.2 m/year. It is noteworthy that two further cases in the same area give significantly higher rates (0.85 m/year). Some underground observations in the Witbank area indicate considerably lower rates in the order of 0.02?0.04 m/year. Further areas for study are recommended. These include a study of old workings to determine the extent and rate of scaling in the various coal fields, an investigation into the possible relationship between scaling and the chemical composition of the coal. In addition, model studies will be required to assess the practical impact of the research findings.

"The sulphide nickel resources of Australia are concentrated in the Western Australian Shield. This shield is considered to have developed by extensive, but incomplete, Proterozoic reworking of once-continuous Archaean crust. It now constitutes relic Archaean cratons and intervening orogenic mobile belts transected by narrow, curvilinear tectono-thermal mobile belts of younger Proterozoic age. Remnants of the Archaean cratons are exposed in the Yilgarn and Pilbara Blocks. In the former an ancient (to ca 3600 m.y.) high-grade gneiss terrain (Western Gneiss Terrain) occurs along the western margin of the block and is interpreted to flank younger (ca3000-2800 m.y.) greenstone belts to the east. Ancient (to ca3500 m.y.) granitoid-greenstone terrains dominate the Pilbara Block.Proterozoic mobile belts contain only traces of nickel mineralization, except for one locality in the Halls Creek Province. The Archaean high-grade gneiss terrains contain no important mineralization, and the Pilbara granitoid-greenstone terrains contain only scattered examples of less important types of mineralization.The important deposits (e.g. Kambalda, Windarra, Agnew, Mt Keith) are all of komatiitic affinity and are best developed in the youngest greenstone belts of the eastern part of the Yilgarn Block. In particular, they are concentrated within, and adjacent to, the Norseman-Wiluna Belt, which contrasts in age, lithofacies and structural style with all other greenstone belts in the shield. It is interpreted to have been a rift zone. Within this belt the two main deposit types—the volcanic peridotite-associated and intrusive dunite-associated deposits—are concentrated into spatially separate zones. Precise controls on this heterogeneous distribution cannot be determined unequivocally from available data. One possibility is that the major volcanic peridotite-associated deposits were developed selectively in the actively subsiding axial part of the rift zone during the early extensional phase, whereas intrusive dunite-associated deposits were formed during a subsequent (less active?) stage of volcanic basin development. Distinctive sub-types (facies) of the volcanic peridotite-associated deposits form clusters that are generally within the rift zone. These may represent deposits related to discrete eruption centres, and at least part of their variation is due to relative position within extensive, topographically confined, linear flows."

Longwall face ventilation is an important component of the overall coal mine ventilation system. Increased production rates due to higher-capacity mining equipment tend to also increase methane emission rates from the coal face, which must be diluted by the face ventilation. Increases in panel length, with some mines exceeding 6,100 m (20,000 ft), and panel width provide additional challenges to face ventilation designs. To assess the effectiveness of current face ventilation practices at a study site, a face monitoring study with continuous monitoring of methane concentrations and automated recording of longwall shearer activity was combined with a tracer gas test on a longwall face. The study was conducted at a U.S. longwall mine operating in a thick, bituminous coal seam and using a U-type, bleederless ventilation system. Multiple gob gas ventholes were located near the longwall face. These boreholes had some unusual design concepts, including a system of manifolds to modify borehole vacuum and flow and completion depths close to the horizon of the mined coalbed that enabled direct communication with the mine atmosphere. The mine operator also had the capacity to inject nitrogen into the longwall gob, which occurred during the monitoring study. The results show that emission rates on the longwall face showed a very limited increase in methane concentrations from headgate to tailgate despite the occurrence of methane delays during monitoring. Average face air velocities were 3.03 m/s (596 fpm) at shield 57 and 2.20 m/s (433 fpm) at shield 165. The time required for the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 ) peak to occur at each monitoring location has been interpreted as being representative of the movement of the tracer slug. The rate of movement of the slug was much slower in reaching the first monitoring location at shield 57 compared with the other face locations. This lower rate of movement, compared with the main face ventilation, is thought to be the product of a flow path within and behind the shields that is moving in the general direction of the headgate to the tailgate. Barometric pressure variations were pronounced over the course of the study and varied on a diurnal basis.

"In-situ wet grab sampling and post-installation coring of soil-cement structures are typically carried out for Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) of deep mixing (DM) schemes. Wet grab sampling and testing is used to provide data to indicate that performance requirements are being met during production, in advance of coring, which typically occurs at 28 days or later, following installation. While unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests from wet grab samples provide good production indicators, industry practice often requires that acceptance criteria of soil-cement structures be based on UCS results from representative core samples.This paper outlines the approach adopted for field sampling and QA/QC testing carried out in highly variable subsurface conditions at a site located in northern British Columbia (BC), focusing on postinstallation soil-cement coring and strength testing for an extensive deep mixing scheme. A discussion on suitable methods of coring soil-cement structures and appropriate selection of samples for testing that are representative of the in-situ soil-cement structures is provided. This paper also discusses the selection strategy adopted for verification of strength and modulus parameters used for design, providing spatial and time coverage, as well as the acceptance criteria implemented, and provides comparisons with published industry recommendations.BACKGROUNDAn extensive deep mixing ground improvement scheme was completed for the development of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Facility to be located in Bish Cove, BC, Canada. The deep mixing scheme was implemented to treat very weak native deposits in-situ to support two mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls up to 20 m (66 ft) high, and their associated bulk earthworks. Within the DM area, the subsurface conditions were highly variable, ranging from deep (up to 21 m (69 ft) thick) deposits of very soft to soft clayey silt to silty clay, overlying layers of dense to very dense gravelly sand to sand and gravel, to compact deposits of silty sand (up to 15 m (49 ft) thick), overlying dense sand and gravel. Bedrock was encountered beneath the granular deposits and generally comprised granodiorite with occasional andesite dykes."

"In this paper, the current status of respirable dust control in coal mine atmospheres is presented. The advancements in the engineering control of dust generation and entrainment, and of reducing the exposures are summarized. The results of the Health Surveillance Program are briefly reviewed. The results of research conducted in the Generic Mineral Technology Center for Respirable Dust are presented. The 1995 NIOSH criteria document on respirable coal mine dust is briefly reviewed. The fundamental scientific and engineering issues in need of research are discussed. A detailed bibliography is attached.IntroductionFor coal mines in the United States, the current permissible exposure limit (PEL) of 2mg/m3MRE-equivalent concentration (an 8-hour TWA concentration measured gravimetrically) was established by Public Law 91-173: the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety of 1969 (the 1969 Coal Act). This standard is reduced when the respirable quartz content in the dust sample exceeds 5%; the reduced standard in mglm3 is obtained by dividing 10 by the percent quartz. The OSHA and ACGIB PEL for respirable coal mine dust is also 2 mg/m3 , and OSHA PEL for respirable quartz is 100 µg/m3 . The 1969 Coal Act also prescribed two activities in the Coal Mine Respirable Dust Sampling Program and the National Coal Workers' Health Surveillance Program n to control respirable dust in mines, and the coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) among the coal miners.There are three principal methods by which personal exposures to respirable dust are controlled. The first is engineering control where the aim is to reduce the concentration in the mine atmosphere to or below the mandated level. The second is the provision of personal protective devices which allow the miner to work in dusty atmospheres without increasing personal exposure. The third is the use of administrative controls where the miner's exposure is controlled through work schedules and procedures to keep miner exposure at or under the mandated levels. The 1969 Coal Act specifically prohibits the use of respirators in lieu of environmental control. The compliance sampling program essentially does not give any credit to the use of administrative controls."

"The support quality of bolts in deep roadways is one of the important factors for efficient and safe coal production. A new kind of non-destructive testing technique and equipment was used to monitor the axial bolt load in real time in deep roadways. Based on the test results, the working status of bolt support in deep roadways was evaluated. The research results show that the variation characteristics of axial bolt load is consistent with the distribution characteristics of rock pressure no matter whether it is in the initial support stage or mining disturbance stage. The axial load of bolts located 20m outby the development face has an overall rising trend within 3-5 days after installation. Within a certain distance in the front abutment pressure zone in front of the face, the axial bolt load increases with the advance of coal extraction. When coal and rock in the abutment pressure zone yield, the axial bolt load is dropped correspondingly. This kind of non-destructive testing technique provides an advanced means of detection and evaluation on bolt support quality.INTRODUCTIONMany coal seams more than 800m deep are being mined in eastern China. Roadways of large cross-section are being developed in coal seams more than 600m deep in western China (Kang et al. 2014). Moreover, these roadways are commonly supported by roof bolts and have encountered many support problems, including soft rock strata, intense mining disturbance, and abnormal tectonic stress. The stability of its surrounding rocks is difficult to maintain, the roof bolt even fails before mining (Shen 2014; Jiang et al. 2015). Therefore, it is very important to develop an effective method to detect the bolt quality in real time and evaluate the bolt's safety status.During installation of roof bolt, the installation quality is heavily affected by installation equipment and tools, field conditions, and operators' skills (Li et al. 2005; Shan 2009). The anchorage length will be shorter than the designed one if the resin cartridges are pushed to the bottom of excessively long drill hole and stay there without being shredded and mixed. The support function of the bolt would be weakened by the shorter anchorage length."

An important part of planning for the rehabilitation of uranium mine sites is the ability to assess the geomorphic stability of the final landform, over time frames ranging from decades to millenia. Depending on the environmental conditions, erosion features such as gullies may incise into containment structures, potentially leading to the exposure and transport of encapsulated radioactive material. Further, erosion may lead to increased sediment loads and the transport of other mine-related contaminants off-site and into downstream waterways. While erosion may be monitored and assessed over the short term (years to decades), the longer-term behaviour (centuries to millennia) of such landscapes is not within any meaningful human management time frame. Landscape evolution models (LEMs) can provide information on soil erosion rates at decadal or centennial scales over large spatial scales, and evaluate the sensitivity of these processes to environmental changes. However, an important issue associated with the use of models is the ability to assess the reliability and accuracy of the model. In this paper, the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM is tested for its ability to predict soil erosion from a series of 30 m × 30 m experimental plots specifically constructed for this purpose on a trial rehabilitated landform at the Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory, Australia. Model predictions of bedload and suspended sediment loads from the erosion plots were compared with field measured observations collected over four wet seasons from the trial landform. Once calibrated for the specific site hydrological conditions, the predicted sediment yield – specifically, bedload – demonstrated an excellent correspondence with the field data. However, longer-term simulations of ten years identified an exhaustion effect in sediment yield from the landform. These latter results indicate that a weathering function needs to be incorporated into CAESAR-Lisflood to ensure confidence that the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM will be able to correctly predict the long-term evolution of a rehabilitated landform once it has been?constructed.CITATION:Lowry, J,?Saynor, M,?Erskine, W, Coulthard, T and Hancock, G, 2014. "The flotation performances and adsorption mechanisms of a-hydroxyoctyl phosphinic acid (HPA) to malachite, cassiterite and wolframite were investigated by micro-flotation tests and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The micro-flotation results indicated that compared with styrene phosphonic acid (SPA), diphosphonic acid (DPA), benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), HPA exhibited excellent collecting power to the three oxide ores. In addition, HPA showed superior selectivity against hematite, tourmaline, feldspar and quartz. The results of XPS analysis demonstrated that HPA reacts with active species (M) on metal oxide by formation of P-O-M or P-M bonds.INTRODUCTIONIn mineral processing, flotation has been the main process for separation and recovery of valuable minerals from complex ores (Mei, 2013; Zhou, 2014). One of the key requirements in flotation process is to increase selectively the surface hydrophobicity of the targeted minerals by surfactant (known as collector in flotation) adsorption so that these mineral particles can preferably attach air bubbles in a slurry or pulp (Bai, 2004; Hankins, 2004). To anchor a solid surface selectively, special functional group are designed to adjust the interaction between the surfactant and the active sites of solid surfaces (Wu, 2006; Huang, 2014).Organic phosphorous compounds have strong affinity toward metals or metal oxides because they form more stable metal complexes than metal carboxylates (Pazik, 2001; Zheng, 1998). In mineral engineering, phosphorous compounds have been exploited as metal extractants and flotation collectors (Alguacil, 2002; Sun, 2008). Ni (2012) and Zhang (1998) introduced diphosphonic acid (DPA) as an effective collector for flotation of fersmite and niobite. Liu (1999) found styryl phosphonic acid (SPA) was a superior collector for flotation recovery of finely disseminated rutile ores. Gruner and Bilsing (1992) thought SPA was one of the best collectors for flotation recovery of cassiterite which could obtain a high-grade concentrates of more than 40% with high recovery values. Bulatovic (1999) investigated the flotation performances of phosphoric acid ester (PAE) to perovskite, ilmenite and rutile and found that PAE was an impactful collector for selective flotation of titanium minerals from complex ores in the presence of petroleum sulfate. However, a-hydroxyoctyl phosphinic acid (HPA) as a flotation collector for recovery of titanium ores were hardly reported in the previous literatures."
