"The TankCell® 300 forced air flotation cell designed and built by Outotec, with active volume of over 300 m3, was installed at Codelco’s Chuquicamata concentrator in September 2008. After that, a program was conducted, where the new cell was tested against the plant’s existing flotation cells of type TankCell® 160, with an active volume of over 160 cubic meters.Testing program was exhaustive and detailed. Grade-recovery curves for each setup were reported, along with recoveries by particle size. Secondly, operational characteristics like air feed and froth height setpoints, and power consumption are compared side-by-side. As the third topic, gas dispersion characterization included velocity mapping, holdup, bubble size and bubble surface area flux operating range. The fourth area of interest was the retention time distribution (RTD) of the 300 and 160 m3 cells in comparison. A detailed campaign using radioactive tracer tests was conducted to clarify this.All of the investigations mentioned above are reported in separate papers for more detail. The aim of this paper is to collect the key findings, and present them in real terms, always referring to operability and metallurgy of the cells. It is destined for people designing new plants and to those improving and expanding existing ones. The most frequently heard question is: will the new large cells operate at same efficiency as the smaller ones. In short, the answer is: NO. They operate at improved efficiency!INTRODUCTIONIn the last two decades of minerals processing, there have been three dominant trends of development in the flotation technology: equipment scale-up, cell characterization and circuit modeling. Equipment scale-up has been rapid in the past two decades. In the year 1990, the largest flotation cell in use was 50 cubic meters of size. This year, 300 cubic meters is the largest installed cell. Characterization of flotation equipment and circuits is a very popular subject nowadays and has helped many operations to improve their recoveries through better control strategies, for example by using optimized air feed and level control profiles (Gorain, 2005), (Doucet, Gomez, Finch, 2006), or through better maintenance (Coleman, Urtubia, Alexander, 2006). Characterization work is closely linked to circuit modeling. The aim is to produce sufficient amount of data to allow reliable model building. These models are then used to design new circuits and to improve existing ones. So in summary, these three lines of development have slightly different aims – from capital and operational cost to performance optimization. Ultimately, they converge in the same end result – maximizing the profitability of the operation. Following chapters will summarize the extensive test work and scientific studies at Codelco Chuquicamata. The aim was to compare a TankCell® 300 cell, with nominal volume of 300 m3, against two TankCell® 160 machines, with 160 m3 volume in each. The work should yield answers to questions: does the larger cell produce similar results – is the scale-up successful?"

"Improved safety and more environmentally friendly operation are basic advantages of mechanical excavation over the drill and blast method. Raise Boring Machines (RBMs) are one of the types of these machines which have recently been increased use in Turkey. The excavated hole with RBM is more stable than other methods and has better air flow, making it ideal for ventilation shafts. This paper is a summary of the performance of a RBM in the Balya PB-Zn Mine in Turkey. Length and diameter of the ventilation shaft are 200 m and 2.4 m, respectively. The geological and geotechnical characteristics of the strata excavated in the mine are first given and later the validity of a model developed to predict the machine performance is discussed. It is believed that the results of this study and the model given to estimate the performance of the RBM will be useful guide for future applications. INTRODUCTION Raise boring technology was developed to meet the demands of the mining industry, but has also found numerous applications in tunneling or infrastructure projects for ventilation purposes. Raise boring machine uses a small diameter drill rod, around 230-350 mm to drill a pilot hole down to the required depth up to around 2000 m. Once the pilot hole has been drilled to the desired depth, a reamer of up to 9 m diameter is attached to the drill rod. The reamer is then pulled back up to the upper level, creating a round shape. Continues operation provides a faster advance rate than other methods. RBMs are suitable both in hard and soft rock. The flexibility in different angles and diameters is a great advantage compared to drill and blast excavation method. RBM creates a shaft with smooth walls which usually does not require lining. The hole is more stable than a drilled and blasted method and has better air flow, making it ideal for ventilation shafts. Raise boring is convenient method in competent rock; however several problems are faced in geological formations where geological discontinuities are dominant. Moreover, assembly and disassembly time may be long in some cases. The performance and operational parameters of the excavating machine should be predicted prior to starting the excavation operations in order to fulfill the economic requirements of the project. In the light of this fact, the main objective of this investigation is to summarize a case study on raise boring machine performance and suggest a new model based on laboratory test results. First, general description of the mine and project are provided. Then, the physical and mechanical characteristics of the samples taken from project area are discussed. In the third section, performance and operational parameters of RBM are investigated to understand the machine behavior in different rock characteristics and also to collect a useful database for further investigation. In the fourth section, a new model for performance estimation of RBM are recommended."

Before direct or wet smelting of copper concentrate was adopted at the McGill smelter, in November 1932, actual furnace smelting tests had indicated the possibility of smelting between 400 and 500 dry tons of wet concentrate per furnace day. Under calcine smelting practice, solid charge up to 116; tons per furnace day had been smelted. It was realized that in order to smelt wet tonnage in equivalent amount per furnace day, a higher combustion rate and higher temperatures would be necessary within the furnace. The reverberatory furnace considered in the following history of wet-smelting developments is a unit rz7 ft. long and 28 ft. 8 in. wide, inside dimensions (Fig. I). This furnace was in operation through all the years from 1934 to date. During 1933, the first complete year of direct or wet smelting, the plant was on a curtailed copper-production basis and the available concentrate tonnage to be smelted was limited. The average coal-firing rate in the reverberatory for that year was 124 tons per furnace day. This rate was lower than the average for years immediately preceding under calcine smelting practice. With this coal-firing rate, an average of 391 tons of new metal-bearing material (N.M.B.M.) was smelted per furnace day. The following year, 1934, the coal-firing rate was increased to 139 tons and the smelting rate increased to 448 tons N.M.B.M. per fur- nace day. In succeeding years production required that either more tonnage be smelted in the one furnace or an additional furnace be placed in operation. With this situation confronting the smelting department, it was determined to continue the program of increasing the coal-firing rate and also to intensify the temperature in the smelting zone of the furnace. In order to accoinplish this, various improvements were made to aid combustion within the furnace. The burners were enlarged, increased primary air was supplied to the burners, and changes were made in the furnace to enlarge and streamline the outlet, thus increasing the furnace draft. The coal-firing rate was increased yearly until 1937 when the firing rate averaged 210 tons per furnace day. Thereafter the firing rate fluctuated according to character of charge and production requirements. In general, however, with the same character of charge the smelting rate increased in almost direct proportion to the increases in firing rate. Table I shows the average coal-firing rate, smelting rate, and other pertinent data for the direct-smelting years of 1933 to 1939 inclusive, the first fivc months of 1940 and May 1940. These figures show that the water evaporated in the waste-heat boilers was in almost direct proportion to the coal-firing rate. In making comparisons in the table, it should be borne in mind that the figures, except for May 1940, are yearly averages. At 10 a. m. registration was commenced and completed. At 11:30 a. m. the meeting was called to order by the President, William Littlejohn. There was no unfinished business, new business nor reports of committees. The minutes of the previous meeting, as published in the proceedings, were approved. The report of the Treasurer was referred to the Auditing Committee who were auditing the report of the previous year. At 2 p. m., President William Little- john called the meeting to order for study session. Mr. J. Samuel Pyeatt, the new president of The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, ad- dressed the Institute at length, expressing his pleasure at the opportunity of meeting the coal operators, pledging his cooperation toward the solution of the mutual problems that are arising. He reviewed the change in the Western Industrial situation; explained how the revenue of The Denver & Rio Grande Western Rail- road was being received from freight rates, only twenty-four per cent above the rates of 1914, yet laborers receive 97 per cent more, supplies cost 58 per cent more, showing that no reduction in rates can be expected unless other conditions are adjusted. He gave figures to show the immense sums, aggregating ten million dollars, that have been spent on improvements in the last ten years. The railroad is improving and will continue to improve. Mr. Pyeatt feels that the serious troubles of the railroad are over and that with the cooperation of the shippers, better service and more profits are ahead. He showed the increase in rates on farm products to be only 48 per cent, as against an average in- crease in price of farm products, them- selves, of DG per cent. The position of the farmer is not as serious, nor un- fair, as has been claimed. More equitable legislation is promised, and this is needed to offset the efforts of demagogues to deceive the people as to the actual facts. Much equipment has been put into the railroad, much new and powerful equipment, and ten of the largest narrow gauge locomotives ever built have just been ordered, engines that will do the work of three of the present locomotives. This ratio of improvement will be maintained throughout the narrow guage system, and the Rio Grande will not lag behind the shippers and the operators in co- operation. The President answered Mr. Pyeatt's remarks, and then called the meeting to order for discussion. The study sessions were held; papers were read by .J. H. Emrick, "Cutter Bits"; D. A. This paper presents an analysis of the high-pressure, gas-driven LPG-slug process, based on fluid flow tests in areal models. Two types of tests were made. One series was made in low-pressure models which permitted observation of fluid movement. Three completely misci-ble analog fluids were used. A second series of tests was made in high-pressure models using methane, propane and a light refined oil saturated with methane at room temperature and 1,550 psig. Under the test conditions of room temperature and a pressure level of 1,550 psig, the phase diagram for the fluids used is similar to those for many of the field systems where the process is considered for use. A method for using these laboratory data to calculate field performance of the process is outlined. As a result of this work, it is concluded that small banks of LPG (5 per cent HV or less) are not effective in increasing oil recovery in horizontal reservoirs. Znstead, where small banks are used, the driving gas quickly penetrates the LPG bank because of fingering and channeling; and from this point on, the process behaves essentially as an immiscible gas-injection project. The validity of this conclusion was substantiated by: (1) laboratory studies of the effect of rate, model size and mobility ratio on miscible displacement in areal models; and (2) calculation of field recovery, which compared closely with actual field recovery. INTRODUCTION Field applications and pilot tests of the gas-driven, LPG-bank, oil-recovery process are on the increase. Most of these tests are employing small banks (2% to 5 per cent hydrocarbon volume) of LPG, which is miscible with both the driving gas and the oil in place, in an effort to attain an effective yet economical miscible displacement of oil by gas. The expectation of miscible displacement with small banks is based on the concepts that: (1) lengths of solvent-oil mixed zones, measured during miscible displacements in long slim cores, are representative of those that will occur in the field; and (2) areal sweep efficiencies5 measured in electrolytic model studies are applicable to miscible displacement in reservoirs. Our experimental evidence indicates that the mixed-zone lengths and sweep efficiencies mentioned are not applicable to miscible displacement in reservoirs. In this paper we present an evaluation of the gas-driven, LPG-bank oil-recovery process based on fluid flow experiments in areal models. These results are used to predict the performance of a field pilot test of this process, and the results are compared with the actual test results. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LPG BANKS The effectiveness of LPG banks of various sizes in accomplishing miscible displacement of oil by gas was determined by displacement tests in a model representing one-quarter of a confined five-spot pattern. The model, 12 X 12 X 1/4 in. in size, was packed uniformly with glass beads. It was operated at a pressure of 1,550 psig and at room temperature; the fluids used were methane, propane and refined oil saturated with methane at 1,550 psig. The saturated oil had a viscosity of 1.2 cp at room temperature. The results of these tests are shown in Fig. 1, where recovery is plotted as a function of the volume of fluid injected for: (1) an immiscible-gas drive with an oil-to-gas viscosity ratio of 85; (2) three sizes of LPG banks; and (3) two completely miscible displacements with mobility ratios of 85:1 and 10:1. (The miscible displacement data plotted are the averages of several tests.) The results show that a 2½ per cent bank of LPG does not increase oil recovery over that obtained by immiscible-gas drive. The 7 and 17 per cent banks are, respectively, about 30 and 50 per cent effective (with reference to the M = 85 miscible-displacement curve) in increasing oil recovery at the point where 2½ hydrocarbon volumes (HV) of fluid have been injected. The percentage effectiveness of the banks at a given volume of fluid injected is defined as Recovery by Bank — Recovery by Gas Drive Recovery by Miscible Recovery by Flooding Gas Drive We conclude from these results that banks of LPG smaller than about 5 per cent HV in an individual stratum will cause from little to no increase in oil recovery. This finding was substantiated by work in low-pressure models, which permitted visual observation of fluid movements. Through both single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction methods, ten A6B23-type compounds have been confirmed to exist between lanthanides (A) (plus scandium and yttrium) and manganese (B); A = Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Lu. The formation of a compound of this type is shown to he extremely atomic size-sensitive; hence it can be classified as a "size-factorH compound. The "enveloping effect", a geometrical consideration observed in its crystal structure, is proposed as the reason for the A6B23-type compound being size-sensitive. The approximate ideal geometrical ratio of the radii R/r is 1.31 while experimentally A6B23-type compounds have a radius ratio lying within the range 1.2 to 1.4. FLORIO t al.' characterized the structure of Th6MnZ3 as fcc, space group Fm3m, with 116 atoms in the unit cell. Since then, a number of isotypic binary compounds, and recently Gd n,,' have been confirmed to exist. The fact that strontium and barium form A6Bz3-type compounds with magnesium strongly suggested the possible existence of Ba6Liz3. However, investigation3 showed the compound Ba6LiZ3 to be absent. Since both strontium and barium are group 11-a elements and are therefore "open metals",6 the nonexistence of Ba6LiZ3 can hardly be explained satisfactorily by valence-electron considerations. On the other hand, the consistent atomic-radius ratio, (R/r),* observed for the known A6Bz3-type compounds,3 strongly suggests that the formation of compounds of this type is atomic size-sensitive. Therefore, one is tempted to explain the nonexistence of Ba6LiZ3 entirely on the basis of the atomic-size difference between strontium and barium. However, this approach is not entirely without objection. Atoms are not rigid spheres and are known to vary in size within certain limits.7 Since the atomic-radius difference between strontium and barium (0.07 to 0.09A) is within these limits, it is reasonable to assume that the size difference would have a negligible effect on the formation of Ba6LiZ3. This view is further supported by the fact that the radius ratio, R/r, in other known "size-factor" compounds is observed to range widely—for example, from 1.08 to 1.45 for ABz-type compounds (C15, MgCuz type)' and from 1.37 to 1.58 for AB5-type compounds (D2d, CaZn5 type).g The present investigation was undertaken in order to find a more satisfactory explanation for the non-existence of Ba6LiZ3 and, consequently, a better understanding of the nature of the A6Bz3-type compound. The primary objectives are to confirm the previous conclusion3 that the A6B23-type compound is indeed a "size-factor" compound and subsequently to determine the atomic-radius ratio range in which the A6Bz3-type compound can exist. In order to achieve these objectives, stoichiometric A6Bz3 alloys, where manganese (B) was alloyed with various lanthanide elements (A), were selected for investigation. The atomic-radius ratios of lanthanide elements with manganese range from 1.26 for Lu/~n to 1.46 for Eu/Mn. This radius ratio range includes and exceeds the range of all previously reported A6Bz3-type compounds—1.32 for Th/Mn' through 1.38 for Sr/Li. Furthermore, the atomic-size difference between successive elements of the lanthanide series in order of atomic number) is of the order of 0.01A (europium and ytterbium are exceptions). The series of lanthanon-manganese alloy systems is ideally suited to a precise determination of the limits of allowable atomic-radius ratio for A6Bz3-type compound formation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The lanthanide metals, in ingot form, supplied by Michigan Chemical Corp. (St. Louis, Mich.) and Nuclear Corp. of America (Burbank, Calif.), were guaranteed by the suppliers to be at least 99.9 wt pct pure (traces of silicon, calcium, and other minor constituents present on occasion, not to be more than 0.05 wt pct) as shown by spectrographic analysis. Manganese metal, in polycrystalline form, was redistilled from the commercial, chemically pure grade and was analyzed to be at least 99.95 wt pct pure. "This paper presents the results of two lateral load tests on large bored piles in soft clay deposit for a major site in northern Egypt. The tests are carried out on 0.8 m diameter piles. One of the tests is carried out on the pile where the clay starts from the ground surface. The other test is carried out on a pile after surface improvement by replacing the top 1.50 m of the clay deposit by compacted granular soil. The results of the tests show the influence of the surface replacement layer on the lateral load versus lateral displacement relationships of the loaded pile. The results of the two tests are used to calibrate a 3D Finite Element Analysis model for the pile. The model is used to investigate the influence of the thickness and lateral extent of the surface replacement layer on the behavior of laterally loaded large bored piles.INTRODUCTIONLateral loads for piles are produced by seismic events, wind, wave action, ship impact, traffic, and land slide forces. The lateral resistance of a pile is controlled by the stiffness and the strength of the material of the pile and the soil surrounding the upper portion of the pile. In most situations, the soil surrounding the upper portion of the pile is too weak to sustain the design lateral loads. Thus there is a need to increase the lateral resistance of the pile or groups of piles. Such an increase may be achieved by either increase number of piles or increase pile diameter. Alternatively, an economic way to increase the lateral resistance is to improve the soil surrounding the upper portion of the pile (Rollins and Brown, 2011; Faro et al., 2015).Ground improvement has the ability to increase the lateral resistance of the pile by increasing the passive resistance of the soil surrounding the upper portion of the pile. The ground improvement techniques have the potential for being more cost-effective and reducing construction time. In spite of this fact, such techniques are rarely implemented in practice. Further, there are relatively few tests or records available in the literature to guide engineers in evaluating the actual effectiveness of this approach. In addition, there is no standard or methodology to aid engineers in designing increase of lateral resistance with surface ground improvement. There are specific improvement methods for each soil type, whether it is loose cohesionless soil or soft cohesive soil and these methods are provided by Michell (1981), Tershai and Juran (2000), ASCE (1997), and Rollins and Brown (2011). Furthermore, there are number of case histories that add a new hole in the sight, such as the cases provided by Brown et al. (1987, 1988), Mokwa and Duncan (2001), Rollins et al. (2005), Rollins and Cole (2006), Cole and Rollins (2006), Rollins, Snyder et al. (2010) , Rollins, Gerber, and Kwon (2010), Rollins and Nasr (2010), and Gerber et al. (2010)."

"Société le Nickel exploits the Dôme lateritic nickel orebody at its Tiébaghi operations in New Caledonia. The site geology has an obvious bearing on recovery and metallurgical performance, with controls that are extremely complex at all scales, including lithology, oxydo-reduction conditions, mineralogy and multivariate geochemistry. In this context, establishing an adapted recoverable resource estimation method that is efficient and transparent proves an interesting challenge. The method must address the key notions of: support effect – the exploration data set can only warrant the estimation of large panels of 20 × 20 × 3 m3 that are much larger than the selective mining units (SMUs) of 5 × 5 × 3 m3 information effect – the selection at the production stage uses estimates based on information that is much denser than that available for mine planning.The problem is rendered more complex in this type of deposit by the fact that the additive variables used for the estimation (metal accumulation and ore tonnage) are not the ones used to establish the selection at the mining stage (ie the nickel grade of SMUs, which is the ratio of accumulation on tonnage). Eventually, the selection criteria not only involve Ni grades, but also other elements such as Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO and SiO2.The solution presented in this paper is to construct an SMU multivariate simulation in the saprolitic horizon and construct an efficient post-processing aimed at producing multivariate recoverable resource estimates. The efficiency constraints imposed by the number of blocks to be simulated (1.5 million) lead to resorting to direct block simulations. The underlying multivariate discrete Gaussian model, which had its validity tested beforehand, is put to good use to mimic the selection process that happens at the mining stage by offering the ability to simulate a composite value located at random within each block.The paper also presents the application of a scenario reduction algorithm to pick a representative subset of a few simulations to help appraise the risk attached to the downstream (reserve optimisation and mine sequencing) phases of the project. The original version of the paper (see Deraisme, Bertoli and Epinoux, 2014) used an early version of the scenario reduction plug-in (named S2RM) built in Isatis® software, where measuring the distance between the initial set of scenarios and the reduced set was based on Ni only. The implementation presented here is for the second generation of S2RM, where measuring the distance between the initial and the reduced set of realisations is based on all study variables. "In this article research on the mineralogical characteristics and beneficiation process for a copper molybdenum deposits in Heilongjiang province of China has been carried out. Chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by SCANning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) were conducted on samples. The bulk analysis results showed that: (1) Comprehensive recovery and separation of molybdenum & copper minerals was feasible by the flowsheet of first copper-molybdenum mixed flotation after grinding the ore samples to 61.88% -74µm and then separation flotation of copper and molybdenum after regrinding the Cu-Mo mixed concentrate to 83.26% -38 µm. The results highlight relationship between mineralogical characteristics of ore and comprehensive benefication method. (2) the combination of "" Sodium sulphide and sodium thioglycolate "" reagents are effective inhibitors of copper-molybdenum mixed concentrate, their selectivity performance is better than that of single reagent. Good flotation indexes were gained that might be directive experience to similar cases. At present flotation is still the preferred methods to deal with the copper-molybdenum sulphide minerals (Yin, Z., Sun, W.et al. 2017; Ansari, A., & Pawlik, M. 2007; Hirajima, T., Miki, et al. 2017). Copper and molybdenum sulphide ores usually have the similarly good nature floatability(Miki, H., Matsuoka, et al. 2017), meanwhile most molybdenum sulphide ore has tiny grained-size(Castro, S., & Laskowski, J. S. 2015.) and closed relationship with other sulphide and gangue minerals which result in the coper and molybdenum separation problem. Base on the nature of the ore and flotation properties of the individual minerals contained in the ore, there are two methods are usually used to deal with the copper – molybdenum ore, including bulk molybdenum/copper flotation followed by separation of copper and molybdenum minerals, sequential molybdenum/ copper flotation(Liu, G. Y., Lu, et al. 2012). The latter method has the shortcoming of hard to activate the depressed copper minerals in the previous molybdenum flotation process, which may result in a large loss of the copper from concentrate, this disadvantage would avoid while adopting the former method. bulk flotation followed by separation process is to get the copper-molybdenum concentrate from raw ore first then separate flotation the molybdenum and copper minerals, benefit from the excellent floatability of both molybdenum and copper minerals ( Malhotra, D., Rowe, R. "A ventilation study using tracer gas was conducted at a western US coal mine. The objective of the study was to evaluate the movement of longwall face air exchanges between the face and worked-out area and to document the presence or absence of face airflow pathways between these locations. The mine operator uses a bleederless longwall ventilation system with a back return and a blowing mine ventilation system. The study was conducted on an active panel and included both underground and surface monitoring sites. The study used sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) released as a slug on the longwall face and in the front of the gob inby the face. The velocity of the tracer gas movement in the gob was 0.019 m/s (3.7 fpm). The rate of movement for the overall tracer gas slug averaged about 0.0091 m/s (1.8 fpm). A separate tracer gas test initiated with the release of SF6 into the legs of the first shield showed the existence of more than one pathway of face air in the general direction from the headgate towards the tailgate corner. Maintaining adequate ventilation air on longwall faces is important for worker safety and for the dilution of methane emitted from the face and caved gob. A more detailed characterization of longwall system air and gas movement allows a mine to better assess its ventilation design for controlling gas on the face and in the gob. INTRODUCTION During a series of stakeholder meetings, a near unanimous concern was expressed related to maintenance of effective ventilation airflow on longwall faces. There was a strong interest expressed regarding the impacts of face length and caving characteristics on the ability to maintain adequate face airflow levels. This study seeks to understand and improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations across the longwall face by assessing airflow variations in terms of roof caving characteristics and face length. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers seek to identify flow paths of ventilation airflow on longwall panels with variations in roof caving characteristics and longwall face lengths. The project research aims to develop an understanding of the role of gas dynamics in variable broken rock, interactions with ventilation airflow and methane concentrations across the longwall face area. The research also addresses continuous ventilation monitoring along the shield line to provide early detection of gas exchanges between face and gob, and thus improve a mine operator’s ability to monitor and control ventilation and methane concentrations around the face. In the context of this paper, the longwall gob refers to the pillared area behind the shields. This work reports on results from one project task to conduct field based research using a tracer gas to describe face air and gob area gas movement in a bleederless longwall ventilation system that incorporated a back return."

Operation of the iron ore deposits of Krivbass which has been going for 130 years, has led to serious problems related to reaching great depths in open pit and underground mining. Extraction of the huge volume of rock mass (about 9 billion m3) resulted in mass violations of the natural state of the subsurface. At present most mining operations are carried out either by combined open pit and underground mining or by open pits in areas underworked by underground mining. Now the process of movement of the strata underworked by underground mines is not completed ? work fronts of open pits approach the areas of possible funnel, terrace and fissure formation, movement continue to develop. With deepening mining operations the remaining reserves are worked off under layers of incumbent rocks of > 900 m. Significant underground voids arise from mining "blind" deposits at large depths. Heaving of voids over the mined area lasts for decades; it may result in not only unpredictable time of funnel emerging and area development of movement synclines, but also the threat of air blows in mines. Forced caving of incumbent rocks as a way of controllable backfilling is difficult to achieve for economic and technical reasons. This is much more expensive and dangerous than stoping. Furthermore, the mining practice does not know examples of enormous volume backfilling under a km thick rock layer. Currently, RMI "KNU" is conducting research and pre-design work directed at creating a specialized pilot Geoinformation System (GIS) of continuous remote monitoring of rock mass in areas of underground voids influence in Krivbass area. Implementation of this system will enable to determine promptly in time and space the areas of the beyond cut off stress condition, to inform about possible occurrence of events that may result in accidents and to improve safety of mining along with other systems of forecasting and controlling the stress condition in rock mass. RMI "KNU", with a large number of professionals from many Ukraine?s leading mining research centers, has developed a research and design work program that includes the following principal stages: 1. Analyzing geomechanical conditions of combined mining of magnetite quartzite and rich ore deposits; determining mechanisms of moving of rock strata underworked by underground mining and places of hazardous area monitoring. 2. Investigating anthropogenic factor influence on the safe state level of rock strata underworked by underground mining (laboratory studies). 3. Developing processing techniques for continuous remote monitoring of rock mass in areas of underground cavity influence. 4. Modeling the state of rock mass based on results of pilot GIS hardware measurements. 5. Developing an expert diagnostics system for rock mass state in areas underground void influence. 6. Experimental investigation and testing the GIS, its improving for efficient application. After testing the pilot GIS it is supposed to be implemented at all mining enterprises as an integral part of iron ore mining and processing technology in the Krivbass area.

During the past few years much interest and attention has been focused on a relatively new method of ore concentration, which utilizes the principles of sink and float and employs as the heavy medium a suspension in water of a finely ground solid, such as galena or ferrosilicon. Although a relatively recent development, much progress has already been made in applying heavy-media separation processes to a considerable number of ores. Eight plants in this country and abroad are now treating approximately 10 million tons of ore annually by heavy-media separation (sink-float) processes, including lead-zinc, lead, iron, garnet, tin and tungsten. At the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in 1941, three interesting papers (unpublished) dealing with heavy-media separation (sink-float) processes of ore concentration as practiced in four commercial units in the United States were presented by Victor Rakowsky, Grover Holt, Elmer Isern and Robert Ammon. These papers gave an excellent exposition of the principles of sink and float, as well as the operating practice in two iron-ore-beneficiation plants, the Harrison and the Merritt, of Butler Brothers, in Minnesota; the Central mill of the Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co.; and the Mascot mill, of the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. Augmented by pictorial descriptions and a working model demonstrating the processes, these papers evoked a great deal of interest and discussion. In fact, in reporting the high lights of the meeting in the April 1941 issue of Mining and Metallurgy, Professor Taggart made the statement that " preconcentration by heavy suspension was Miss A.1.M.E 1941 so far as milling is concerned." Although to date the greatest application of heavy-media separation from the tonnage point of view has been for the treatment of lead, zinc and iron ores, these processes have a much wider field of usefulness. In this regard, it is to be noted that recently new heavy-media separation plants for treating cassiterite ore and garnet ore have been placed in successful operation. Moreover, numerous other types of ores have been found to respond well to these processes when tested on a semi-commercial scale, and it is expected that in the near future a considerable number of new plants will be erected. In view of the fact that heavy-media separation processes offer such attractive possibilities, particularly now, when the mining industry is being called on for an even larger production than ever before has been attempted, despite shortages of labor and supplies, it was felt that a description of some of the successful separations that have been worked out during the past year in the Ore Dressing Laboratory of the American Cyanamid Co. on a variety of ores of strategic importance would be of interest. In April 2006, Orica Quarry Services undertook an investigation to determine the likely vibration and frequency response of three water storage tanks to quarry blasting, immediately adjacent to the tanks. Of the three tanks that were studied, two are relatively tall with a æwineglassÆ shape; one is constructed of steel (4 ML storage capacity) while the other is constructed of concrete (2 ML storage capacity). The third is a ground-embedded concrete tank that is relatively squat and broad in shape (38 ML storage capacity). A vibration limit of 25 mm/s and an acceleration limit of 0.16 g were imposed on the tanks. However, this report shows that this acceleration limit, whilst having relevance to low frequency earthquake motions, is quite inappropriate for the high frequency blast vibrations that are typical in a quarry blasting environment. The investigation involved firing 11 single blastholes of known charge weights and distances from the tanks, and measuring the tank vibration response using blast monitors placed on and around each tank. Analysis of the data collected from the cement tanks showed resonant responses over a broad range of frequencies, with dominant and lesser responses in vertical and lateral motion recorded at 9.8 Hz, 12 Hz, 16.8 Hz, 17 Hz, 31.3 Hz and 38.1 Hz. Unfortunately, most of the data collected on the steel tank was corrupted by noise due to electrical sources and/or mechanical sources such as the water agitator inside the tank. Advanced Monte Carlo vibration models were then constructed using the single blasthole information. Knowing the resonant frequencies enabled the modelling of electronic delay sequences for the reduction of resonant vibrations. Ultimately programmable and accurate electronic delay detonators were deemed essential to allow blasting in relatively close proximity to the tanks while avoiding resonant frequencies. Three blast designs were modelled, ranging in maximum instantaneous charge (MIC) from 4 kg to 22 kg, and 60 holes to 160 holes. The modelling showed that two of the designs (using small charge weights) could be used no closer than 71 m from the storage tanks. This is based on a 90 per cent confidence level of achieving vibration levels within the 0.16 g acceleration limit, even though the velocity levels predicted to be generated at this distance were significantly less than the 25 mm/s limit. The third design incorporated larger charge weights and could be used for blasting at distances no closer than 220 m from the tanks. The present work, conducted in an operating quarry, demonstrates the usefulness of Monte Carlo waveform superposition techniques for the control and reduction of ground vibration (either velocity or acceleration) under restrictive environmental constraints. However, a discussion is also presented to demonstrate that it is somewhat restrictive to impose an acceleration limit based on the motion produced by low frequency earthquakes rather than the motion produced by high frequency blast vibrations.

INTRODUCTION DURING the years 1942-1944, about 125 New England deposits were mined for sheet and punch mica, and many others were briefly prospected. During this period the Geological Survey, United States Department of the Interior, carried on detailed studies of the deposits and the pegmatite bodies that contain them. The primary purpose of the studies was to provide geological information that would contribute toward efficient mine development and operation. The studies were aimed directly at practical production problems. Detailed maps showing the structure of the deposits were prepared, and geological findings were closely correlated with data on specific yields and costs of mining and processing. The result is information that permits a reasonably accurate appraisal of the mica deposits of New England and the mining industry that they support. At a time when the future of the industry is in doubt, it seems desirable to submit this appraisal for consideration. Domestic mica deposits supply only a small fraction of the country's needs in normal times, for only the richest domestic deposits can compete with the low-cost mines of India and Brazil. However, the possibility that this country may be cut off from its supplies in time of war gives domestic deposits an importance much greater than their peacetime production would imply. New England supplied about 22 per cent of domestic output in 1943 and 1944, the peak years of wartime production. Its actual contribution to the war effort was greater, for the proportion of sheet mica of high quality in the New England product is higher than the average for domestic mica. ANALYSIS OF WARTIME OPERATIONS In considering the data presented in this report, it must be remembered that the scale of mica operations is very small compared with that of many other mining industries. The typical New England mica mine of 1943 and 1944 was worked by a crew of five or six men. Equipment was varied but on the whole extremely simple. The first stage of operation at a deposit was normally opencut mining. Drilling was done mostly with jackhammers powered by portable compressors driven by gasoline engines. Muck was shoveled by hand into buckets with a capacity of 1/3 to 2/3 ton and commonly hoisted by derrick to a dump adjacent to the cut. As operations were carried to greater depth, and the transition to underground mining was made, these methods were modified to a degree depending largely on the attitude of the deposit mined.
