Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited, Laronde Division, operates the deepest single-lift shaft in the western hemisphere. The initial Penna hoisting plant was designed for a production rate of 1800 tonnes per day (t/d) from a 2240 m deep shaft. Exploration success, while sinking the shaft, led to a decision in 1998 to increase the production rate to 4500 t/d of ore from a loading depth of 2200 m. The new production rate was achieved by increasing the size of the rope and reducing the rope static factor from the existing 5.0 required by regulation to a static factor using the formula 25 000/(4000 + L) contained in a draft document that would eventually become SABS 0294 in South Africa. The formula permits Laronde to use a static factor as low as 4.0. The upgraded Penna hoisting system is the first hoisting plant outside of South Africa to meet the South African requirements. This paper describes the conversion of the hoisting plant to the lower rope selection factor in the year 2000 and the operating and maintenance issues experienced since then.

Mountain Pass, California is located 96 km southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has an exposed surface orebody within view of Interstate Highway 15. Mineral prospecting in this region dates back to about 1860 followed by the discovery and subsequent mining (1870-1895) of silver bearing veins on the north slope of nearby Clark Mountain. In contrast to the four lane divided interstate highway of today, all supplies needed for mining during this early history were transported by wagons from San Bernardino which is 320 km west. Many small lead mines were active in the area during 1917-20, and a small gold mine operated in 1941-42 within 100 m of the orebody presently being worked. In 1949 two prospectors searching for uranium with a Geiger counter discovered a radioactive vein outcrop at Mountain Pass. Further investigation revealed the presence of a large amount of a light-brown, heavy mineral to a depth of about 2 m. A sample of this unidentified mineral was submitted to the Boulder City, Nevada, U.S. Bureau of Mines where a spectroscope examination shoved high level rare earth oxides, carbon dioxide, and fluorine. These results indicated the mineral was bastnasite.

PROJECT 8411 of the U. S. Bureau of Standards, sponsored by the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E., is an attempt to define more concisely than has been possible heretofore the accuracy and the Limits ' of usefulness of the ' various methods now in use for the determination of oxygen as it exists in ferrous materials. It originated in correspondence between John Johnston and other metallurgists, and was brought to the attention of the Iron and Steel Division of the Institute at the Annual Meeting in February, 1933. As reported in MINING AND MET,ALLURGY, Vol. 14, page 152, March, 1933, "Dr. Johnston introduced, and those present adopted, a resolution that the Iron and Steel Division of the A.I.M.E., believing that a careful comparison of the several methods now in use for the analysis of steel for nonmetallic elements such as oxygen is highly desirable, heartily endorses the proposal that the U. S. Bureau of Standards act as a clearing house " in this matter, undertaking the final preparation and allocation of identical samples to those laboratories willing to collaborate in this important question, and collate the results re- ported back to the Bureau.'"

Depletion of shallow ore reserves is forcing the South African gold mining industry to exploit reefs at ever-increasing depths. By 2010 around 30 per cent of South African gold production probably will come from depths greater than 3 km (Johnson and Schweitzer, 1996). At such depths, virgin stresses will rise significantly, producing complex rock engineering problems (Malan and Basson, 1998). Concern over structural instability at depth has led planners to seek a technology capable of ædetection of geological structures with a displacement of 2 m or greater (or as appropriate to the mining technique) 200 m ahead of mining at an acceptable costÆ. Borehole radar probably is such a technology. Cover holes are drilled routinely ahead of development. The evaluation of its candidacy for a tactical role in ultra-deep gold mining dependsùamong other thingsùupon establishing the electromagnetic characteristics of the environment hosting significant gold reefs. The Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) is one such reef. Recent borehole radar field trials, presented here, suggest that the VCRÆs overburden is a remarkably translucent, clutter-free dielectric with a Q of ~35 and that the VCR itself is the dominant radar reflector.

MY ANCESTRAL connection with the manufacture of boiler plate runs back through four generations, and my personal acquaintance with the practice reaches back to the time, in my ,boy- .hood days, when iron plates' were made in a mill operated entirely by water power. -The mill originally was driven by an old-fashioned "'breast" water wheel 20 ft. in diameter and with a20-ft. face, geared direct to the roll train. When the mill slowed up and there was danger of its stalling, the men would jump upon the rim and help the wheel around with their weight, to prevent a "sticker." Later, as large plates were called for, a flywheel was set out of line so that it could' be speeded up by gears from the water wheel and connected back again,. by reducing- gears, to the roll train. The flywheel, with its cast-iron rim and wooden spokes, made 90 r.p.m. and the roll train 45 r.p.m. In 1870, our company installed our first steam-driven plate mill two-high rolls, 84 in. long. In these early mills the hot metal was manipulated by hand.

The Lower Proterozoic metasediments of the Pine Creek Geosyncline form a chrono- stratigraphic sequence of mainly greenschist- and amphibolite-grade shallow-marine to supratidal pelites, psammites, carbonate rocks, and volcaniclastics which in places rests unconformably on Archaean basement. Granite and later dolerite intrude the sequence, and are associated with the major orogenic 1800-m.y. event which regionally metamorphosed the sediments. Most mineralisation is stratabound, and can be related at least partly to volcanic activity. Uranium mineralisation is mainly confined to particular carbonate-rich horizons near basement. Other metals are mainly in small hydrothermal deposits near intrusive granite. Specialist studies indicate that uranium was leached from its source rock, and probably carried as carbonate complexes in highly saline fluids at between 100 and 3500 C. Precipitation took place by redox reactions in breccia zones in carbonate rocks; these zones were formed by carbonate solution or diapiric movement of evaporites which preceded the carbonate. Extensive chloritisation in the ore zones suggests metasomatism by Fe- and Mg-rich fluids which may have evolved during dewatering of the evaporites. For the REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) project, a 2500 m tunnel was built using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) under the Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (ADM). Although the geology under the Montreal Airport (ADM) would have been suitable for an excavation with a hard rock machine, the rst section reuired an earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM due to the soft soil located under wetlands. After excavating 280 m, the TBM was blocked in a transition zone of unconsolidated, water-bearing soils directly above the underlying bedrock. A free air intervention was not possible due to these geological conditions. After several failed attempts to create a slurry cake for hyperbaric interventions, a ground freezing system was designed and implemented, incorporating angled pipes drilled from outside the wetlands to directly in front of the cutterhead. This paper discusses the engineering reuired to form a frozen, water-tight zone in front of the cutterhead using liuid nitrogen. It also describes the complex method of replacing the disc cutters while holding the ground freezing system active in a manner protecting the health and safety of the workers.

Electrical ad thermal-conductivity measurements have been made on titanium and 6 titanium alloys. The following expression was derived for calculating thermal conductivity from electrical conductivity: K = 0.626 s T x 10-8 + 0.00497 where K = thermal conductivity, cal sec-1 cm-2 cm0C-1 s = electrical conductivity, ohm-]cm-1 T = temperature, deg Kelvin This expression gives calculated thermal conductivities that are not in error by more than 10 pct from the experimental values for A-55 titanium and the 6 alloys measured; namely, A-110AT, C-110M, C-130AM, Ti-6A1-4V, Ti-140A, and Ti-155A, which are representative of the presently available commercial a and a-ß titanium alloys. THERMAL conduction in a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid is accomplished by energy diffusion from molecule to molecule, a relatively slow process. For this reason, such materials have a low thermal conductivity. When a material is crystalline, there is in addition a heat transfer by a vibratory motion of the crystal lattice. It is the contribution of this lattice conduction that makes a crystal a much better conductor than a gas, liquid, or amorphous solid. Lattice conduction, however, does not account for the relatively enormous thermal conductivity of a metal. This is explained by the freedom of movement of valence electrons. These valence electrons drift in a metal in a direction toward a drop in electrical potential and, to a lesser degree, in the direction of a temperature drop in the metal. Since both the electrical and thermal conductivities of a metal depend upon the presence of free electrons, there should be some relatively simple relation between the two. Wiedemann and Franz in 1653 first discovered an approximate empirical relation between the electrical and thermal conductivities of metals at the same temperature. This ratio varies appreciably with temperature, and Lorenz later showed that by adding a temperature factor to the Wiedemann-Franz ratio the value of K/(s T) is constant, where K is the thermal conductivity, a the electrical conductivity, and T the absolute temperature. This Lorenz constant shows a greater variation for alloys than it does for pure metals, the ratio increasing slightly as the proportion of alloying elements increases. It has been found that a closer correlation between electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity can be obtained by means of an equation of the form K - A s T + B [1] where A and B are constants. In this equation the term AsT is the contribution of electronic conduction and B is the contribution of lattice conduction to the total thermal conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS Electrical-resistivity and thermal-conductivity measurements on titanium and 6 titanium alloys serve as the basis for determining an equation of the K = AsT + B type for titanium alloys. Specimens—Table I shows nominal compositions of the 7 metals on which electrical and thermal conductivities were measured. The electrical and thermal-conductivity specimens for each alloy were taken from stock of the same heat and usually from adjacent sections of the same bar. "The present study reports solvent extraction and separation of zinc from concentrated nickel sulfate solution. In our previous study, Zn and Cd in cold filter cake (CFC, 45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, and 2.5-4% Ni) were extracted by alkaline leaching followed by electrowinning processes respectively. The strip solution from electrowinning process, was a pregnant liquor solution (PLS) containing 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process for separation of traces of Zn from high grade nickel. The zinc free raffinate containing 16.6 g/l Ni sulfate solution will flow to nickel electrowinning plant for cathode production. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is the organic phase used in this study. The effects of various parameters such as organic phase concentration (10- 40 % v/v), pH (1.5-3), and temperature (25 and 45°) are investigated. Zinc over nickel separation factor increases by increasing pH from1.5 to 3. The results show that 98.7% of Zn was loaded at25°C O/A ratio of 1, pH 3, and 10% vol. D2EHPA. A 10 M NaOH is used for pH control. However, replacement of pH controlling agent with ammonia solution (25%. v/v) results in interesting observations. Ammonia addition, reduces the solubility of Ni2+ cations in solution. Nickel starts to precipitate from raffinate in a crystalline bluish-green form. The obtained crystals are characterized by XRF and identified to be nickel-bearing analog of boussingaultite, a rare sulfate mineral of nickel with chemical formula of Ni (NH4)2(SO4)2.6H2O. The crystallization rate of crystals is studied. It is a slow precipitation process with 75% in 4 days.INTRODUCTION Annually, many hydrometallurgical processes such as electrowinning, solvent extraction and leaching are applied to waste filter cakes in Zanjan, Iran. These additional processes on filter cakes are critical from both environmental and economic points of view. CFC (cold filter cake) is a toxic but valuable filter cake (45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, 2.5-4% Ni, and 0.2-1.5% Cu) produced in many zinc production plants. Our research group at Research and Engineering Company for Non-ferrous Metals (ReCo.), developed a series of hydrometallurgical methods for extraction of zinc, cadmium and nickel from CFC (Moradkhani, & Rasouli 2012). The recovery of zinc and cadmium with alkaline leaching and electrowinning was successfully studied. The strip sulfate solution from cadmium electrowinning unit, contains high concentration of nickel with some traces of zinc impurity. This pregnant liquor solution (PLS) was analyzed and reported to contain 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process to separate Zn from nickel (Fig. 1). The organic phase stripping solution containing 4.2 g/l zinc and 200 ppm nickel can be circulated and used in the acidic leaching step. This generates nickel solution with high purity suitable for nickel cathode production."

IN these days of the spectacular in research and technological accomplishment, it is easy and natural to overlook some of the applications to everyday life of recent developments of a more pedestrian kind, or to fail to realize that sometimes two or three of the latter may be combined to serve a novel purpose in fields other than those in which they grew. The present remarks are to point out three such developments which might be combined to apply to an everyday function of the A.I.M.E. as an organization. By its Constitution, the A.I.M.E. is organized "to promote the arts and sciences connected with . . . minerals and metals, and the welfare of those employed in these industries . . .; to hold meetings for social intercourse and the reading and discussion of professional papers, and to circulate . . . among its members the information thus obtained . . .; and to . . . maintain . . . a library." By these words of Article I the profession of mining and metallurgy is recognized to involve many arts and sciences, of which the art and science of exchanging information is a leading one. As to methods of preparing or securing papers, the Constitution is silent.

The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5 M tons. The underground mine has three active development panels and one longwall panel. The mining horizon is about 500 m below surface and strata liberate methane. Three surface-based blowing fans provide ventilation air. A ventilation survey and subsequent analysis was undertaken and a simulation model developed. Air heating during winter is essential to prevent freezing of pipelines and to lesser degree, for miner comfort. Air at all three intake shafts is heated using gas-fired heat exchangers. A strata heat study was conducted in one of the active panels to determine rock attributes. Tests included in-situ measurements of rock thermal conductivity and geothermal gradient. Continuously methane monitors have also been installed in an active development panel?s return drift. Ventsim ventilation software was used to aid the heat and contaminant simulation study. An exercise was also undertaken to gain some understanding of methane contaminant levels throughout the mine. It was further used to determine an adequate surface intake air heating rate and consequently the minimum natural gas consumption needed for winter intake air heating at the mine.

Intensive coal cleaning usually necessitates fine grinding of the feed in order to liberate inorganic constituents from the surrounding organic matrix. This however adversely affects the ability of flotation techniques to beneficiate coal. Such difficulties are mainly attributed to the increase of particle population density, the decrease in capture efficiency, and the greater tendency of inorganic components to report with the froth. A three-pronged approach was adopted in an attempt to overcome these difficulties. The aggregative flotation technique was used to reduce particle population densities and improve capture, while unconventional spargers were used to generate a wide range of bubble sizes. Use of unagitated flotation columns allowed for the maintenance of countercurrent flows in both the recovery and washing sections. The combined effect of these parameters enabled the recovery of 92% of the carbon content of coal having an average particle size of 20.5 µ m, while rejecting 85% of the ash. This was accomplished using 2 kg of fuel oil per tonne of coal in a column 2 meters high operating at 2-3 tph/m3, a capacity which compares favourably with conventional cells.

The paper begins by describing an underhand cut-and-fill mining concept for a 50m thick, generally tabular though irregularly shaped orebody dipping at 30 degrees and occurring at a depth of between 2300 and 2700m in the Sudbury Basin. From this, the broad design requirements of a fill system are stated. Two and three-dimensional numerical models are then described which were built to evaluate the theoretical benefits of different types of fill reinforcement. Included in this evaluation are the effects of span, fill strength, fill tightness, as well as static and dynamic loading types. Results, supported by large-scale physical models, are presented to show the significance of reinforcement on stable, undermined fill performance. Finally the paper describes work which has been done to evaluate the suitability of so-called silicated cemented backfill. This system is, in principal, attractive for deep mining applications since transportation is in the "safe" hydraulic regime, while fill water run-off, segregation and shrinkage effects are potentially eliminated in the stopes. The results from various surface and underground trial pours are reported which substantiate the proposed use of this type of backfill at depth.

"Underground refuge alternatives (RAs) require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the RA. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that PRVs prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5 in H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. Research to date by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) suggests that the design and implementation of PRVs used in RAs has not yet had sufficient performance analysis or technical development. In response to this need, NIOSH tested a variety of PRVs using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork, and various sensors to determine if subject PRVs meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics including opening pressure and flow rate were measured for five different PRVs under a variety of conditions. Subject PRVs included two off-the-shelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place (BIP) RAs, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel RA and is currently being used in some BIP RAs. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.8 to 6.1 in H2O) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/min (683 SCFM). INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement [1]. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed NIOSH to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5.0 in. H2O), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor [2]."

Mining in Estonian oil shale deposit mainly takes place in the Ordovician, Keila-Kukruse aquifer. The aquifer is affected by mining and is fully dried out around the working mine areas (Perens and Savitski, 2008). The groundwater level is decreased down to 30 m, to the mine floor elevation using about 30 pumping stations (Lind, 2005). The pumping rate is very high - depending on the season, ranging from 10 up to 40 m3 per ton of produced oil shale (Reinsalu et al., 2006). The Estonian oil Shale Company mined 15.5 million tons of oil shale in 2007 (Source: Estonian Oil Shale Company). In order to predict the effects, and avoid the social and environmental impacts, there is a need to continuously monitor the situation and run software simulations aiming at decreasing the pumping rate. This becomes even more important since the environmental taxes on usage of groundwater resources increase every year. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor groundwater level and quality, and develop a groundwater model for the overview of the situation during mine operations and also for a number of years after mine closure.

Substantial consideration has been given to the implications that the morphology of the Chatham Rise deposit will have on mining operations. The glacio-tectonic processes involved in the distribution of nodules on the rise has in several areas been quite significant. The recent cruises by Chatham Rock Phosphate Limited (CRPL) have collected data which has affirmed the assumptions previously made and catered for in historic resource estimations. The deformation and displacement of the phosphorite during glacial periods and the redistribution of the mobile sand during interglacial periods is interpreted to have produced a highly variable pattern of phosphorite concentration (kg phosphorite/m2) and coverage (% phosphorite/sample weight). The phosphorite resource probably has a significant spatial variability at a scale of tens of metres. Results of recent surveys show phosphorite-rich patches alternating with phosphorite-poor areas at distances of less than 20 m. The high spatial variability of the deposit has had a bearing on how historical information for the project has been regarded and integrated with the recent exploration approach and data collection process. This coupled with the proposed extraction tool has influenced the size, nature, extent and siting of the proposed mining blocks

A new mining area at the Vaal Reefs gold mine is to have a shaft. system which will extend to a depth of 4 200 m and will require 130 MW of cooling. A novel feature of the proposed cooling system is a large underground air cooling installation in which an ice slurry is sprayed into the ventilation air. The design of the ice slurry bulk air cooler, in the form of counter.flow cooling towers, is discussed. Comparative thermal tests with cold water and ice slurries (with ice mass fractions up to 22 per cent), were carried out in a 5 m high test tower. The presence of the ice in the water spray increases the resistance to heat flow and reduces the overall thermal characteristics of the air cooler by 8 per cent. Notwithstanding this, the use of ice slurries is indeed beneficial in terms of overall costs. It is concluded that a 25 MW air cooler should use 410 kg/s of ice slurry with a 10 per cent ice mass fraction to cool 550 kg/s of air which is 75 per cent of the total air flow rate.

THE Charleston Section of the A. I. M. E. held a joint meeting with the National Coal Association and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers on May 6 and 7, at which 94 members and guests were registered. Mechanical operation of coal mines was the subject discussed. First on the program was a paper entitled "Rock Dusting in the Coal Mines of West Virginia," by R. M. Lambie, chief of the Department of Mines, and Gordon MacVean. It appears in full in the current issue of MINING AND METALLURGY, p. 290. J. E. Jones of the Old Ben Coal Corp. opened this discussion by describing the method of rock dusting employed in the mines of that company, giving many interesting details, incidentally referring to the use of rock dust in fighting mine fires. He described one case where a number of troughs was brought to within 150 ft. of the fire, and rock dust had been thrown in its direction. After each trough had been thrown the party advanced a few feet, where another trough was discharged. About 10 ft. were gained on each advance, until the party found they had advanced completely over the fire.

Phase equilibria of the zinc-rich portion of the Zn-Fe-A1 system containing up to 20.0 wt pct Fe and Al have been investigated at 600°C (1112°F), 450°C (842°F), and room temperature by metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. The phase relationships were found to involve only those phases present in the three binary systems. THE presence of small quantities of aluminum (approx. 0.2 wt pct*) in zinc galvanizing baths is known to suppress the formation of Zn-Fe alloy layers within the coating.' As part of an extended investigation of this suppression effect and the alloy reactions involved, the zinc-rich corner of the Zn-Fe-A1 equilibrium system containing up to 20.0 pct Fe and Al was determined at 600°C (1112°F), 450° F (842° F), and room temperature. The present paper reports the findings of this study. The constitution of the Zn-Fe system has been reported by Raynor2 based mainly on the work of Schramm3-3 and Truesdale et a1.6 The solid solubility of iron in zinc is extremely small and lies between 0.0009 and 0.0028 pct in the range 150° to 400°C (302°to752°F). Within the temperature and composition range of interest, a eutectic reaction involving nearly pure zinc, liquid = Zn+FeZn13, is observed at about 419°C (786° F) and 0.018 pct Fe along with a peritectic reaction, FeZn7+ liquid e FeZn13, at 530°C (986° F) and 6.2 pct Fe. The latter reaction is sluggish due to the large proportipn of solid phase involved in the transformation. Halla et al.,7 identified the compound FeZn13 as monoclinic with a = 13.68, b = 7.63, c = 5.07, and B = 128°44'. The structure of FeZn7 was reported by Bablik, et al.,8 to be of hexagonal symmetry, belonging to either the C6v = C6/m mc or D46h = C6/mc space group. Divensions of the unit cell are a = 12.81A and c = 57.6a. The Zn-A1 diagram as composed by Raynor9 and later Gebhardt10 is characterized by a eutectic decomposition, liquid 382°C (720°F) and 95.0 pct Zn and a eutectoid decomposition, at 275° (527°F) and 78.0 pct Zn. The eutectoid reaction cannot be suppressed permanently by quenching. Above 275° (527° F), a and a' co-exist in a closed miscibility gap between 31.6 and 78.0 pct Zn. Both phases are fcc and have nearly the same lattice parameter. The maximum solubility of aluminum in zinc (B) is approximately 1.0 pct at the eutectic temperature. PROCEDURE Materials. The experimental alloys were prepared from both massive and powdered material. Cast alloys were composed from three zinc-base master alloys containing 8.0 pct Fe, 16.0 pct Fe, and 50.0 pct Al which were made from C.P. zinc, Armco iron, and
