Longwall extraction in the Phalen Scam in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia is carried out under flooded abandoned workings in the Harbour Seam 140 m above, and at depth of up to 700 m beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Careful planning of panel and pillar dimensions is necessary to prevent inflows from the overlying workings and to prevent the development of excessive subsidence strains at the seabed. This paper briefly summarises the research undertaken over the past five years by CBDC and CBCRL into the problems associated with mining under water, and then describes the development and application of a design/planning code of practice developed jointly by CBDC, CBCRL and mine regulatory agencies. The design method employed in the Code of Practise is based on empirical data from the coalfield and parameters developed from subsidence modelling and previous water inflow experience. It includes precautionary measures to be adopted during development and mining, and monitoring procedures to be followed. It is flexible enough to allow future developments in the understanding of inflow mechanisms to be incoporated without major modifications, and represents a major step forward in reducing the potential hazards associated with coal extraction in the coalfield.

A rigorous horizontal drilling and chemical grouting program was specified beneath the Hollywood Freeway (U.S. Route 101) section of Los Angeles Metrorail Contract C-311.Twin 6.67-m (22-ft.) diameter starter tunnels were to be conventionally mined through amixed alluvial and bedrock face consisting of silty sand, gravel, and weathered sandstone and siltstone of the Topanga Group. The contact between the alluvium and bedrock dipped toward the Crossover Excavation where the horizontal drilling and grouting operations were performed. The intent of this grouting program was to stabilize the mixed face to minimize ground loss and surface settlement, and to reduce groundwater inflow into the tunnel headings. Given the highly variable mixed face conditions, horizontal drilling up to 86 m (284 ft.) resulted in upward trending trajectories which likely followed the bedrock contact. Chemical grouting was performed in a primary, secondary and tertiary, three dimensional sequence. Evaluation of the primary and secondary grouting parameters indicated where tertiary grouting was required. Grouting pressures induced a small rock failure at the tunnel heading as well as increased stresses on the tiebacks of the excavation.

THE object of the work was to increase the capacity of the plant and, if possible, to reduce costs of the actual unit grinding while doing so. The accompanying assays of an infra-sizer analysis of the cyanide tail (Table l) illustrate the problem in hand. The cyanide tail is a combination of two products, gangue and FeS2. The assay alters by virtue of a change in gold value due to grinding and the relative quantity of FeS2 in the sizes, which itself varies with the grind. The disposal tail is the residue after the cyanide tail is scavenged by flotation, most of the pyrite being removed for roasting. It presents a somewhat different problem, since grinding gangue is all gain, but -10 micron FeS2 does not float nearly as well as + 10 product. This results in compromise in the final size to be aimed at. Extra grinding has hardly any appreciable effect on the gold extraction from the FeS2. A research program to evaluate the use of ceramic die inserts for ferrous diecasting was initiated by the Bureau of Mines at its Tuscaloosa Research Center. Data were compiled from the literature to characterize selected ceramic materials with respect to thermal properties, thermal-shock resistance factors, chemical reactions with molten metals, and processes required to form die components. With this information and a computer model developed for predicting temperature and stress patterns induced in ceramic materials during simulated ferrous diecasting operations, 27 candidate materials were evaluated. After evaluation, only 15 were considered for testing in an apparatus constructed to immerse the ceramic specimens in molten cast iron. Of these, 13 were tested in a modified testing unit in which cast iron was poured onto the specimens. These tests resulted in the selection of three materials for further testing: boron carbonitride (50 pct B4C:5O pct BN), boron nitride-grade M (BN-M, 40 pct BN, 60 pct Si02), and pyrolytic boron nitride (PBN). Tests in a gravity-flow die unit showed that PBN was thermal-shock resistant and could be used in diecasting of ferrous metals.

Copper electrowinning at Duisburger Kupferhuette was introduced in March 1975. The electrowinning plant has a capacity of 10,000 mT of copper cathodes a year. The cuprous oxide feed material is an intermediate product of the treatment of the leach solutions, originating from chloridizing roasting of pyrite cinders. This material is characterized not only by a wide spectrum of accompanying impurities, but also by an unusually high level of precious metals. As the priority set was the production of high-purity cathodes. there was a need for developing a process which would be suited to treat complex leach liquors . The process adopted consist s of an oxidizing leach in spent electrolyte, followed by two- stage purification, By this means. a low- acid pregnant copper electrolyte is obtained free of elements detrimental to copper quality. Electrowinning is carried out at a current density of 200 A / m2 in the presence of 10 g/l zinc. The electrowon copper has a conductivity of at least 101.4% lACS and a softening temperature not exceeding 200°C, which makes it a suitable product for continuous casting and dip ?forming.

Modern gold production from the Gympie Goldfield commenced in 1995 with the first production from the Monkland Mine. The primary ore target was the 2.5 m wide Inglewood Fault ore zone, which was initially mined using traditional narrow-vein shrink stoping. This manuallyintensive mining method allowed the mine to re-open with minimal capital cost, however the trade off was low productivity and high operating costs. As the mine has developed, access through 100-year-old, timber-lined, small shafts, and the high cost of delineating reserves, has restricted modernisation of the operations. In early-2000 a stockwork lode was discovered adjacent to the existing workings with an economic width of 40 m. In order to maximise the benefit of such an orebody, mining needed to be approached in a new way. This paper summarises the many changes implemented at the Monkland Mine, including the necessary cultural change, implementing long-hole stoping, de-bottlenecking and the application of mechanisation. The result has been a significant improvement in safety performance, higher productivity and a more secure future for all those involved in the project.

Multotec Process Equipment and Dominique Frantois-Bongarton have a patent for a mineral sampling device, which they call a æTrue-Belt SamplerÆ. This uses a plough, which is rotated about an axis parallel to a conveyor belt to throw material off the belt. A fixed sample cutter takes a sample from the material thrown off the belt.Discrete element modelling has been used to consider a range of plough designs, plough speeds, positions for the cutter relative to the plough, cutter apertures, cutter designs and frictional properties, prior to the building of a physical prototype. Metallurgical characterizations of the collective (Cu/Mo) and selective flotation plants were carried out in Minera Los Pelambres, Chile. The selective plant allows the valuable minerals of Cu and Mo to be separated. The evaluation involved two surveys consisting of metallurgical sampling as well as residence time distribution (RTD) measurements to determine load distribution. The RTD data were obtained in real-time by means of the radioactive tracer technique. In addition, metallurgical data was reconciled and supported by effective residence times. In the collective plant, a performance comparison of parallel rougher circuits was carried out, which included a bank of six mechanical cells of 250 m3 and banks of nine mechanical cells of 130 m3. In the selective plant, the Cu and Mo evolution along the plant was evaluated. The results in the selective plant allowed for performance evaluation of mechanical and pneumatic cells in primary flotation. In both plants, mineral losses were evaluated and their relationship with circuit configuration (cell types and circuit layout) was determined. The metallurgical characterization was a powerful tool to evaluate circuit performance and to detect improvement opportunities at industrial scale.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has constructed a smoke chamber and developed sensitivity tests for smoke detectors. Response of ionization-and optical-type commercially available smoke detectors have been investigated. Six smoke detectors were measured with respect to visually obscuring smoke characterized by a corresponding optical density for smoldering and flaming coal combustion in the smoke chamber. It was determined that for one type of ionization smoke detector the alarm time was nearly equivalent to that of an odor monitor's alarm for smoldering coal combustion experiments and earlier for flaming coal combustion experiments. The experiments showed that an average CO concentration of 5 ppm corresponded to an optical density of 0.022 m-l for smoldering and flaming coal combustion. Two of the commercially available ionization-type smoke detectors were more responsive to flaming than smoldering coal combustion at an optical density of 0.022 m-l, whereas the optical smoke detectors showed the opposite trend. The responsive characteristics of the detectors evaluated with respect to known smoke conditions in the smoke chamber shows their potential for use as mine fire sensors or part of a mine atmospheric monitoring system to improve mine safety.

This paper describes the results of convergence measurements conducted about five years for the re-use gate roadways at OAL lignite mine in Turkey. Double lignite seams separated with a marn layer, are mined with long-wall retreating mining system at the mine. Rib pillar has been abandoned and gate roadways were planned to be packed for the re-use of full extraction. Various packing systems have been attempted, namely three rows of woodenchock, one row of wooden chock plus concrete wall and concrete wall only. The re-use of maingate roadways packed with wooden chock yielded 62% of closure. Lastly developed concrete packing of 3 meters wide and specially developed support set composed of three friction props and a cap, which is a modification of yieldable set, have successfully maintained the main and tail gate roadways stability with a total vertical convergence of 32%. Good correlation has been established between pack stiffness and floor heave as well as maingate and tailgate convergences. The elimination of rib pillars by re-use of gate roadways increased the coal recovery by 20% and decreased the development/production ratio from 0.065 m3/ton to0.022 m3/ton.

Industrial effluent from various industries contains heavy metals that are a serious threat to humans, flora and fauna in water bodies, and the environment. The heavy metals are dumped after precipitation, which has serious environmental consequences. In this paper, a 2D axi-symmetry CFD model has been developed to study the extraction of chromium ion from industrial effluent, in a hollow fibre membrane, using Alamine 336 as the carrier and kerosene as the diluent. The Navier Stokes equation was used to predict the velocity profile of the aqueous and organic phases, and species transport equation, which considers both convective and diffusive mass transfer, was used to predict the concentration profile of the chromium ion in the computational domain. The distribution coefficient was experimentally determined at a pH 4, which was found to be the optimum pH. Numerical simulations were performed considering 11.11 mol/m3 of initial feed concentration for chromium ions and extractant concentration of 0.2 M. Estudou-se o efeito do tamanho de grão austenítico nas propriedades de tração do aço Hadfield refinado com Hf. Estas propriedades foram comparadas com as de um aço Hadfield sem refino, ambos com a composição química de acordo com a norma ASTM A128 – grau B2. Adicionalmente, foram usadas técnicas de caracterização macroestrutural, microestrutural e fractográfica. A caracterização macroestrutural mostrou que o aço Hadfield com adição de Hf apresentou tamanho do grão austenítico (600 ?m) aproximadamente cinco vezes menor do que o do aço Hadfield sem refino (3000 ?m). Os resultados do ensaio de tração mostraram um pequeno aumento (~6%) no valor do limite de escoamento com o refino do grão, em acordo com a Equação de Hall-Petch para materiais austeníticos. No entanto, os resultados dos ensaios de tração do aço Hadfield refinado mostraram aumentos que não foram previstos para as propriedades de resistência à tração (~37%), alongamento (~53%) e tenacidade (~88%). O exame fractográfico dos corpos de prova de tração indicou predominância do mecanismo de fratura dúctil para o aço Hadfield sem refino, enquanto que o aço Hadfield refinado apresentou predominância do mecanismo de fratura intergranular dúctil.

O estudo do efeito da adição de nióbio em um ferro fundido branco alto cromo tratado termicamente com 25%Cr e 3%C foi estudado neste trabalho por microscopia ótica, microscopia eletrônica de varredura e difração de raios X. Partindo de uma liga hipereutética, a adição de 2% de nióbio foi definida considerando que todo Nb adicionado se encontraria na forma de carbonetos de nióbio, NbC, e com o objetivo de obter uma microestrutura próxima à eutética. A adição promoveu um refinamento da microestrutura, sendo que uma fração volumétrica de 27% de carbonetos M7C3 foi observada. Carbonetos grosseiros, inicialmente formados, não são facilmente observados. Uma microestrutura formada por NbC e eutético, M7C3 + matriz (austenita ou martensita), foi obtida. Os carbonetos de nióbio formados são encontrados principalmente na forma compacta. É esperado, portanto, que, a liga com adição de 2% de nióbio apresente melhor resistência ao desgaste abrasivo que a liga sem nióbio, em razão dos carbonetos primários, frágeis e grosseiros, terem sido praticamente suprimidos após a adição de Nb e uma microestrutura mais refinada tenha sido obtida.

Along with increased production from longwall units has come the likelihood of increased worker noise exposures. In recent years, equipment has become larger, more powerful, and noisier than its predecessors. For these reasons, the Mining Division of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is investigating worker noise exposure on longwall faces and researching possible solutions to reduce this exposure. Part of this research effort involves studying the effect of covering the underside of longwall shields with acoustical material to reduce reverberating noise along the face. Experiments using acoustical absorptive insulation to cover the undersides of the shields, shearer body, and the shield supports were conducted at the full scale simulated longwall test facility located at the Pittsburgh Research Center. Sound levels were recorded every l.5 m [5 ft] along a 15.2 m [50 ft] section of the simulated face for all of the conditions tested. The analysis of the data indicated that a 2.0-3.0 dBA noise reduction was achieved between the shearer drums and a 4.0-5.5 dBA attenuation was attained upwind of the headgate drum.

Flotation circuits in the metalliferous industry recover high value concentrates from very fine (minus 0.lmm), low grade, slow-floating feeds. Flotation columns acting as final cleaners within these circuits offer the benefits of higher grade concentrates, reduced circuit complexity, improved control and reduced power consumption. By contrast, in the coal industry, these benefits have not been realised, principally because columns are not well suited to the treatment of conventional coal flotation feeds (minus 0.5m). However, this does not imply that columns do not have a place within the coal industry, rather that they must be applied in a role where all the unique advantages of column flotation can be of benefit. The development of a commercial scale column to recover discarded ultrafines from the Riverside preparation plant of BHP-Utah Coal Limited is discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on the column design features pertinent to the recovery of ultrafine coal. Pilot and commercial scale column performances are compared. The results of the commercial scale testwork indicate that a full installation at the 5.5 MTPA Riverside plant would annually recover additional coal worth $US 6.6M.

Refractory ores with gold entrapped in a sulfide matrix, must be processed in a first stage with chemical or physical treatment in order to liberate the gold for a subsequent step with cyanide. The goal of this research was to compare the refractory behavior of a gold concentrate treated using two pretreatment methods: pressure oxidation and fine grinding. Gold concentrate from Viacha Mining in Bolivia, assaying 50.11 gpt, with a P80 of 131 ?m was used. The concentrate contains arsenopyrite and pyrite as main sulphides in the matrix. A preliminary test with cyanide resulted only 13.5% of gold extraction with 4 hours of stirred leaching. Using an autoclave oxidation with sulphuric acid and 12 bar oxygen pressure at 220°C pretreatment, the cyanide gold extraction increased to 69.0% in 4 hours. When material was ground in a pulverizer, producing a P80 of 20 ?m and the product directly cyanided, stirred leaching gave a gold extraction of 65% in 4 hours. For both techniques, the effect of temperature, sulfur produced in autoclave oxidation, optimization of the cyanide and the nature of residues were also studied.

A development at 83 Queens Road in Melbourne, Australia required construction of a three level basement. The normal geotechnical constraints of excavating adjacent to an existing relatively new building were challenging enough for the complicated soils profile occurring at the site. An additional significant challenge faced by the designers, was the requirement to excavate underneath the entire footprint of an existing heritage listed building, known locally as the Mansion, in the centre of the site. Maintaining the structural integrity of that building was afforded the highest priority during the 10m excavation. This paper describes geotechnical aspects of the analysis, design and construction of the secant retention system adjacent the new building and support of the Mansion enabling the 10m excavation to proceed without causing damage to the structure. The secant wall comprised hard-soft interlocking piles constructed using CFA methods. CFA piles along the length of the Mansion provided short term support, with the building load being transferred to the piles by large steel beams jacked under the building. Survey results confirmed that movements of the retaining wall and also the load bearing piles were minimal and well within design expectations.

Plasma-induced damage of InGaN/GaN multiple quantum well (MQW) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has been studied in terms of forward turn-on and reverse breakdown voltages, together with etch rate and surface morphology. The physical degradation of sidewall along with rough surface morphology of n-GaN caused by increased ion scattering induced the deterioration of the forward and reverse voltages. It was found that the turn-on voltage is sensitive to the surface roughness of the etched n-GaN and the breakdown voltage is strongly affected by the sidewall contamination. Annealing under nitrogen after the mesa etching improved the electrical properties of the InGaN/GaN MQW LEDs. Efficient blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were fabricated using InGaN/GaN triangular MQWs. The LEDs with triangular QWs showed a lower operation voltage and 2.4 times higher light output power than those with the rectangular MQW LEDs at 20 mA and 20 °C. The intensity of electroluminescence (EL) at 20 mA was almost independent of ambient temperature in the triangular QW LED, but decreased substantially in the rectangular one.

A energia eólica, fonte de energia renovável e de baixo impacto ambiental, vem crescendo rapidamente na última década, em especial no Brasil. A conversão da energia cinética dos ventos em energia elétrica é realizada por aerogeradores, que são acopladas em torres, que na sua maioria são constituídas de anéis sobrepostos de aço, os quais são fabricados e montados com o emprego de várias etapas de soldagem. Em função disso, o conhecimento da soldabilidade dos aços estruturais é um fator importante para indústria eólica, dando subsídios para a elaboração de procedimentos que permitam a redução dos custos de soldagem e a seleção adequada dos aços empregados. Este trabalho objetivou a avaliação da soldabilidade do aço estrutural EN 10025-4 S355M através de ensaios mecânicos e metalográficos de juntas soldadas pelo processo de arco submerso (SAW) em duas diferentes técnicas: Single Arc e Tandem Arc. Os resultados mostraram que o aço S355M apresentou excelente soldabilidade, com destaque para o processo SAW Tandem Arc, o que possibilita a maior exploração desta técnica como uma excelente alternativa para a redução do tempo de soldagem durante a fabricação de torres eólicas.
