"Nanocrystalline silver bulk material with average grain size of 20.3 nm was prepared by warmvacuum- compaction method. The as-prepared nanocrystalline silver was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calarmeutry analysis (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and 6157 type Electrometer test, respectivily. The experimental results show that the average grain size and microstrain of the nanocrystalline silver are 20.3 nm and 0.088%. The melting point and melting enthalpy are 1228.7 Kand 82.34 Jig, which are lower than that of coarse-grained silver by 6 Kand 22.6 Jig, respectively. The electrical resistivity of nanocrystlline silver increases with higher temperature when the range of temperature is between 233K and 293K. The electrical resistivity at 293 K is 1.475xlO -7 Q·m, which is higher than that of coarsegrained silver by a factor of 9.IntroductionN anocrystaline ( nc) materials or nano structured ( ns) materials are three-dimensional (3 D) bulk materials with average grain size typically smaller than 100 nm. Ne materials have been of great interest for their unique properties, such as superior tensile strength [1-2], high microhardness [3- 4], superplasticity [5-6], magnetically quasi-isotropic [7-8] , and so on, making them one of the most promising nano-scale materials with wide applications. Ne materials with average grain size of 5-10 nm were firstly fabricated by Gleiter et al. [9] in 1980s, using inert gas condensation (IGC) method. Unfortunately, the large surface to volume ratio creates a high surface energy component in the total free energy of the system and results in a metastable state in the materials. Therefore, due to the signfica nt disordered grain boundary regions, nanomaterials are thermally unstable and are subjected to a strong driving force for grain growth. The grain growth even occurred at room temperature [10].The conflict or deviation of measured date, e.g. strength, microhardness, thermal stability, partly due to the grain boundary ratio or the distribution of grain size, and partly derived from imperfections such as voids and microcracks while earlier processing techniques are known to result in incomplete dens:fication [11-12]. Therefore, the higher quality samples produced in subsequently years still show such a general trend."

This, report represents the comments of the individual members of the A. I. M. E. Sub-committee on Physics of Mine Ventilation on the proposals of a special committee of the Institution of Mining Engineers (London). As might be expected, there is a certain diversity of opinions, for owing to the shortness of time- it was not possible for the sub-committee to get together for informal discussion. The report is presented in this form in the hope that it will bring out a full discussion by other members in the Institute. OLE SINGSTAD?, New York, N. Y.-The Atkinson formula, P =SV2 K a is quoted and it is stated that this formula is especially applicable to mine galleries but is unwieldy in application, as in many problems the value of K, S and a are assumed not to change. This is the same formula that was used during the preliminary calculations for the ventilation of the Holland Tunnel, and where the above-mentioned values were constant for a number of cases, it was a very simple matter to rewrite the equation n the form P = K1V2 and avoid the repeated use of identical figures. The Atkinson formula assumes 1. That resistance to flow is independent of the pressure. 2. Changes in volume due to change in pressure may be neglected. 3. Changes in density and viscosity may be neglected. 4. That the coefficient K is a constant. 5. That P is proportional to V2. We found, from our experiments in connection with the ventilation of the Holland Tunnel, that all the above assumptions could be safely made, with the exception of No. 3, and No. 4 at, very low velocities. In mine work, where many assumptions must necessarily be made, it would seem inconsistent to attempt to make any allowance for the other factors, which are so small that they can be determined only by the most careful experimental work. However, P does depend directly on the density of the air, and to that extent the Atkinson formula is incomplete.

"Sierra Gorda SCM is a joint venture partnership of KGHM International (owned by KGHM SA, Poland), Sumitomo Metal Mining and Sumitomo Corp. (Japan) operating in northern Chile. The Sierra Gorda openpit mine and coppermolybdenum processing plant will become one of the largest mines in the world. The need for optimum production efficiency and sustainability has driven the creation of the most modern, wellinstrumented mine in Chile. This article contains a general review of the project including geology and history.This was a fast-track project going from greenfield site acquisition to mill startup in 10 years. Highly experienced and motivated engineers and technical staff have overcome many significant challenges resulting in a rapid ramp-up of production capacity. A potential expansion to double the production rate in the fourth year of operation has also been intensely studied.The Sierra Gorda property is located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, in the District of Sierra Gorda, Region II of Antofagasta, Chile (Fig. 1). There is almost no precipitation in this area. The mine site is generally flat with some rolling hills. The project is located about 5 km (3 miles) from the village of Sierra Gorda at an elevation of approximately 1,700 m (5,600 ft) above mean sea level. The village is near a highway and railway line. The city of Calama, home of the famous Chuquicamata Mine, is located about 60 km (37 miles) northeast of Sierra Gorda. In addition, the SG mine is in the midst of numerous other mines including Spence, Esperanza, Mantos Blancos, El Tesoro, Lomas Bayas, Gabriela Mistral, El Abra, Radomiro Tomic and Escondida, to name a few.The primary organizational value at Sierra Gorda is "Zero Harm." This includes employees, contractors, the environment, the community, plant facilities and mine equipment. A cornerstone of this program is called 5X5S (five by five S), which combines the lean principles of 5S with the safety model of taking five steps back and thinking about the task at hand for five seconds, five minutes, the time it takes to assess and manage the risk. "People caring about people" promotes proactive engagement in the safety of coworkers and others at work and at home."

The partial molal free energy of Cd in each of the four intermediate phases, Cd3 Cu, Cd8 Cu5, Cd3Cu4, and CdCu2 is determined using the Knudsen vapor pressure technique. Measurements are made also within the two-phase regions, and thus the variation in FCd is now known across the entire phase diagram. The absolute values are all less the 2.0 kcal and increase regularly with increasing Cd concentration. The small absolute value of the free energy precludes the possibility of obtaining highly accurate values; nevertheless, the results are compatible with those previously reported for the liquid phase. Additional results are reported concerning the lattice parameters of the 6, E, and b phases. THE elements Cu and Cd combine to form four intermediate phases which are designated* and E and which include respectively the following inter metallic compounds: CdCu2, Cd3Cu4, Cd3 Cu5, and Cd3 Cu. The extent of each phase with respect to temperature and composition is shown in Fig. 1 which is the equilibrium diagram drawn according to Hansen.1 All four phases are brittle, and most probably are true intermetallic compounds. Only the crystal structure of the 6 phase has been thoroughly investigated.2,3 The structure is cubic and isotypic with y brass. The structure of Cd3 Cu has not been previously reported, It is hexagonal with a = 8.11 and c = 8.76 0.02Å and the structure is presently being determined.* The compounds Cd3 Cu4 and CdCu, have been each previously the subject of a single investigation. Cd3Cu, is presumed to be cubic4 with the space group Fd3m, whereas CdCu2 is hexagonal2 with the C14-type structure. Cu2 Cd is found by X-ray analysis to be hexagonat with lattice parameters a = 5.00A and c = 16.17Å. The material appears to be pure Cu2Cd as all reflections could be indexed on the basis of the single hexagonal structure. These values disagree with those of Kripyakevich and coworkers5 who report a = 4.96Å and c = 7.98Å. Their investi-

Anthracite coals have been divided into three groups: (I) meta-anthracite, a high-carbon coal that is usually very slow to kindle and difficult to burn, at least on conventional equipment; (2) anthracite, a high-carbon low-volatile coal of widely accepted value as both a domestic and industrial fuel; and (3) semianthracite, a coal lying between anthracite and bituminous coal in carbon and volatile content, and also, generally speaking, in burning characteristics. Anthracite Groupings The technical differentiation between these groups, as defined by the A.S.A.-A.S.T.M. Sectional Committee on the Classification of Coals, is as shown in Table I. Tables 2 and 3 show typical analyses of anthracites and semianthracites and Figs. I to 3 show graphically the range of analytical samples. Table 4 shows the commercial sizes of coals. Meta-anthracite and Graphitic Anthracite Typical analyses from virtually every field in the United States indicate that there are few if any extensive deposits of meta-anthracite. Some of the anthracites of Rhode Island contain almost negligible quantities of volatile and would thus fall into the meta-anthracite grouping on a basis of analyses alone. However, their other characteristics indicate that it is doubtful whether they should be considered as fuels at all, but rather as graphite. In fact, this material is being mined for use as foundry facings and furnace linings.4 A typical analysis of Fenners Lodge graphite,4 from Rhode Island, is: graphitic carbon, 55.9 per cent; silica (ash), 40.6; sulphur, 1.6; moisture, 1.9; volatile, o. Other Rhode Island coals possess percentages of volatile that would throw them into the normal anthracite rather than the meta-anthracite class. However, this "volatile" is nearly all noncombustible,3,4 being composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide and inert gases, therefore its definition as volatile is open to discussion, leaving the exact classification of the fuel a moot question. Discussion of the paper of H. P. HOWLAND, printed in Bulletin No. 111, March, 1916, pp. 627 to 650. A. H. LEE, Buffalo, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*). The statements and results recorded in Mr. Howland's paper can be accounted for by the use of coke with a low sulphur content (0.60 and under). This allows the furnaces to be run on a small volume of acid slag, which it is presumed was done in Mr. Howland's practice. H. A. Brassert has admitted that this was the largest factor in low fuel consumption in his practice. Where the coke contains from 1.00 to 1.25 per cent. of sulphur the situation is quite different and I doubt whether the results mentioned by Mr. Howland could be obtained under such circumstances. ` N. M. LANGDON, Mancelona, Mich. (communication to the Secretary + ).-Gruner's ideal working (which is but a statement of the law first enunciated by Bell) as given in Gordon's Translation of Studies of Blast Furnace Phenomena, "supposes that the reduction of the oxide of iron is effected by the CO only, without intervention of solid carbon." This ideal, if reached, would mean theoretically perfect or 100 per cent. efficiency of reduction. The workings of the large number of furnaces as given in Bell's and Gruner's great works do not show that this standard of perfection ever was reached. This problem has been worked out by the writer for a number of furnaces, and his results, as well as those given by others, all show a failure to reach perfection. Some furnaces, however, approach nearer to perfection than others. The "ideal" as given by Gruner was not stated as a solved problem in blast-furnace practice, but as an ideal to the attainment of which furnace managers should strive. A study of the factors involved from every angle is interesting and instructive and the paper on this subject contributed by H. P. Howland is no exception to the rule. This article is fairly open to criticism, not because of the unique method of presenting the subject, but for the reason that, as the writer conceives, erroneous assumptions are taken which lead naturally to incorrect conclusions.

Central Texas added 76 producing oil and gas wells during the year, abandoned 378 wells in the same period, and produced 10,359,905 bbl. of oil in the 12 months under consideration. The oil production represents a decline of only 3 per cent as compared to 1934, but it must be remembered that much new production was added during the year. The activity in new work centered in Frio, Bexar, Williamson and Cald-well counties, with development in the Pearsall, Von Ormy and Byersville fields taking first importance. New discoveries in 1935 were confined to Pearsall area of Frio County and an extension to the Darst Creek field in Guadalupe County. The Red Lake field, in eastern Freestone County, proved itself of importance from the standpoint of a gas reserve but no oil production has yet been obtained. In Bexar County, the Von Ormy field, in which the discovery well was drilled early in 1934, completed 22 oil producers during the year. New Fields Pearsal1.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation, in developing its 60,000-acre block in Frio County, has definitely proved the existence of commercial oil production in four separate horizons; namely, the Navarro, the Austin Chalk, the Buda and the Georgetown. The discovery well, a two million cubic foot gas well, was tompleted in 1934. A test of the Trinity sand at 10,050 ft. found salt water but later was plugged back and finished as an oil well in the Navarro sand. Most recent of their discoveries has been in the Austin Chalk at a depth of 5666 ft., where a 24-hr. gage through 1-in. choke showed 2640 bbl. of pipe line oil. The oil has a gravity of 28.0" A.P.I. and is brownish in color. Because of lack of pipe lines in the area, the wells are produced only for short periods of time, and it is predicted that development will be slow until the district is entered by pipe line purchasing companies. The paper describes a machine developed for the purpose of concentrating clear optical grade fluorspar crystal from a feed material containing less than 1 pct impurities. The principle of concentration is based on the fact that in a liquid having an index of refraction equal to that of fluorite (n — 1.434) clear crystals are invisible, whereas crystals containing occluded impurities absorb a part of the light. As the crystals pass through a light beam, undesired crystals give themselves away by creating a shadow on a photoelectric receiver. .The shadow is converted by the photoelectric cell into an electric pulse. An electronic circuit amplifies this pulse and commands the operation of a mechanical concentrator. Hp HE crystal laboratory, Dept. of Physics, Massa--*- chusetts lnstitute of Technology, was confronted with the problem of obtaining a supply of optical grade calcium fluoride (CaF,) for use in growing synthetic CaF, crystals. A search of the known fluorspar deposits did not indicate that any quantity of optical spar could be obtained. Even the best material had to be sorted by hand to remove impurities. The process for growing CaF, crystals developed by Professor D. C. Stockbarger of the Dept. of Physics, M.I.T., necessitates very pure feed materials. Exclusion of impurities is required, even in amounts detectable only spectrographically. The impurities occurred as minute inclusions of SiO,, BaSO,, CaCO,, FeS2, water or air. Crystals up to 4 in. in diam and weighing several pounds are made by the Harshaw Chemical Co. in Cleveland. Since the time required to grow a 4-in. crystal is about one week, and since the cost of manufacture is high, removal of impurities by any concentration method appeared practical. The mineral engineering section of the Dept. of Metallurgy undertook to investigate the possibility of concentrating clear optical fluorspar, —4 mesh + 10 mesh, from a feed containing over 99 pct CaF,. Various innovations of the known methods of concentration were considered, but in each case the minute amount of impurities associated with the crystal produced such extremely small differences

Although, mining of minerals such as polymetallic nodules and sulphides from the deep sea floor has been delayed due to the combination of factors such as current availability of Cu, Ni, Co, Mn (and other metals) on land and their fluctuating prices; these deposits are still considered as the alternative source for metals in the 21st century. Exclusive rights for exploration in the ?Area? (beyond the national jurisdictions of any country) given to eight countries and consortia by the International Seabed Authority and the estimated resource of 300 million tonnes in a typical area of 75,000 km2 is expected to yield about $17.5 billion (at December 2008 metal prices) in 20 years life span of a single nodule mine-site. In order to recover 3 million tonnes of nodules, an area of 300 sq km only will be mined annually (i.e. <1 km2/day) for an optimum abundance of 10 kg/m2. However, during mining, large quantity (22 tonnes/day) of sediments associated with nodules would be resuspended that could lead to certain environmental impacts on the benthic ecosystem. Several small-scale benthic impact experiments in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, have given some insight into the possible environmental impacts and the restoration processes, but the possibility of extrapolating these findings to a commercial mining scale remains an issue to be considered. An estimated capital expenditure of $1.05 billion and operating expenditure of $4.2 billion for a single deep-sea mining venture will have to be weighed against the availability of mineral ores on land as well as the metal prices in the world market. None-the-less, development of technologies for mining and metallurgical processing, as well as formulation of regulations and guidelines for potential ?contractors? to mine these minerals have been progressing consistently. These coupled with recent efforts by certain ?entrepreneurs? to initiate mining of seafloor massive sulphides in the EEZ of certain countries, indicate the continuing interest and support the perception that such deposits could well be the future sources of metals. This paper analyzes the current status and discusses the economic, environmental, and technical issues that need to be addressed for sustainable development of deep-sea minerals.

IN making gold alloys possessing certain physical properties, such important factors as corrosion resistance, color, hardness and melting points must be considered. All of these requirements depend directly upon the composition. It is possible to obtain the same colored gold alloy by using different compositions, but in doing so one may bring in some undesirable property. Other investigations have been carried on in this field by F. E. Carter,1 E. M. Wise,2 and L. Sterner-Rainer.3 To make a complete study of the effect of composition upon these properties, a systematic investigation was carried on involving a range of copper content from 85 to 65 per cent. Elements such as zinc, silver and nickel were used to replace in part the copper content. The gold content in all the alloys remained constant. Only 10-karat gold alloys of those containing 41.6 per cent gold will be considered. All of the alloys were made in an induction furnace. Each alloy was cast in a 3 by ¼ by ¾ -in. ingot. The method of obtaining the melting points and making color determinations was described in a previous paper.4 The Rockwell B scale with the ball and 100-kg. weight was used for all hardness determinations. The submersion of test pieces in concentrated nitric acid is one of the standard corrosion tests used in the optical trade. A test piece in the 50 per cent cold-worked condition, ½ by 2 by 0.043 in., is blanked from a strip using a. die, and the weight, loss per square inch of surface is taken as a means of comparison. The time for this test is 2 ½ hr. of actual sub-mersion of the test piece in the acid. This standard test was applied to all of the 10-karat gold alloys discussed in this paper. The tensile tests were made upon strips of the dimensions shown in Fig. 1. The test pieces after blanking were annealed at 1300° F. for 20 min. and cooled in air. The "drop of the beam" method was used in determining the yield point, as there was a very marked "drop" when the yield point was reached.

DuRing the year of 1937, the East Texas district produced 211,194,467 hbl. of oil and marketed more than 22,329 million cu. ft. of gas; 3377 oil and gas wells were completed. During this same period 106 exploratory wells were drilled, discovering three new oil fields and one gas-distillate field. Fields East Texas Field.—The East Texas field again led the district as to production and number of wells completed. During the year, 2420 oil wells were completed, making a total of 24,382 producing wells, which produced 171,336,854 bbl. of oil, for a total of 1,156,352,834 bbl. since the beginning. During the year the average bottom-hole pressure dropped 49 lb., making the average bottom-hole pressure 1119 lb. Approximately 3500 wells are making salt water, 20 per cent of them making over 80 per cent of the water. During the month of December, the daily average production of salt water was 119,000 barrels. Talco Field, Titus and Franklin Counties.—The Talco field produced 9,780,948 bbl. of oil during the year, from 637 wells. During the year 472 wells were completed. All of the wells are pumping and 241 are making salt water. This field has followed a normal development and did not exceed the estimated number of acres reported last year. Rodessa Field, Cuss and Marion Counties.—The Rodessa field was extended about 13 miles southwest into Marion County, which added approximately 4000 acres to the field. During the year 260 wells were completed, making a total of 416 producing wells, which produced 12,646,-970 bbl. of oil. The author was unable to obtain figures for the amount of gas produced. "Single phase rubidium jarosite was synthesized by precipitation from aqueous solution. X-ray diffraction and SEM-EDS analyses showed that the synthetic rubidium jarosite formed in subspherical particles with an average particle size of about 35 µm. The chemical analysis showed an approximate composition of Rbo9432Fe3(SO4)2 1245(OH)6. The decomposition behaviour of the jarosite in terms of solution pH was thermodynamically modeled using FACTSage by constructing the potential-pH diagram at 298.15 K. The E-pH diagram showed that the decomposition of jarosite leads to goethite (FeOOH) together with Rb+ and SO42- ions. The experimental decomposition of the Rb-jarosite was carried out in alkaline solutions with five different Ca(OH)2 concentrations. The decomposition process showed an ""induction period"" followed y a progressive conversion period where the Rb+ and SO42- ions formed in the aqueous solution. In contrast, calcium was incorporated in the solid residue and iron was transformed into amorphous ferrihydrite. The kinetic analysis showed that this process can be represented by the unreacted-core chemically controlled model. The reaction order with respect to Ca(OH)2 is 0.4342 and the calculated activation energy is 98.70 kJ mol-1. IntroductionJarosite type compounds are hydrous sulfate minerals containing alkalis and ferric ions, MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6, where M can be H3O+· Na+, K+, Rb+, Ag+, NH4 +, Tl+, ½ Pb2+ or ½ Hg2+. Jarosite-type compounds were formed by the natural ""in situ"" oxidation of pyritic ores leading to the replacement of the original iron sulfides and iron oxides (Dutrizac and Kaiman) [1]. The great interest in jarosites is due to its ability to eliminate or diminish the iron concentration of the acid leach solutions produced in the hydrometallurgical zinc process, with relatively low losses of divalent metals such as Zn2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ or Co . However, the losses of the metal values demand a careful study of the conditions under which the jarosite compounds are formed together with their chemical properties."

Again, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to another session of the 79th meeting of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute. The thing again that has always been impressive are the activities that we&apos;ve had so far. The success in the meetings has been delightfully encouraging to all of our committee people. Please welcome the chairman of the session, Charlie Margolf. MR. MARGOLF: Thank you, Vernal. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It would be my privilege to serve as the session chairman this morning. To allow the maximum time for our speakers, I&apos;ll turn the microphone over to Bernie Bernstrom who will introduce our first speaker. MR. BERNSTROM: Thank you. As Vernal mentioned, Dan Jackson will be our first speaker. He is the Western Editor of Coal Age Magazine. Dan really doesn&apos;t need an introduction to this group. He&apos;s belonged to the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute about 25 years. Dan is a native of West Virginia and he&apos;s an ex-coal miner. He graduated form West Virginia University as an electrical engineer and worked for Amherst and West Bending Coal prior to employment by Coal Age Magazine. Back in 1972 Coal Age moved him to Denver from New York City. MR. JACKSON: When Vernal Mortensen asked me speak to the members of the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute earlier this year I found it impossible to say no to the guy because of what he has contributed to western coal. Little did 1 know that the subject he had in mind would be entitled, "An Outsider&apos;s View of Western Coal." At first I asked myself-I&apos;ve been associated with the coal industry for some 38 years, 12 years in national operations and 26 years reporting on it. You might say that I&apos;ve been married to two industries, coal and the business press for 26 years, but today I&apos;ll put on my business press hat and try to make an impression of what an outsider might think of western coal. But at the outset, let&apos;s get one thing straight: When you say press, whether it&apos;s business press, the media or whatever, and you heard some comments yesterday as far as what the media has done .to this industry and there&apos;s been some definitions bandied around as to just what an editor is. One of the most recent ones has defined an editor as a person who can talk on any subject with an open mouth. Now that&apos;s not my case. Secondly, I don&apos;t give long talks. Several years ago I was giving a rather lengthy talk to a group similar to this and it was halfway through the talk when I noticed one guy on my right looking at his watch quite frequently. I didn&apos;t mind that too much because all of us do that once in a while, but when he looked at his watch, took it off and shook it, I thought, "My God, better cut short." But for more than a decade western coal has enjoyed substantial annual increases in production from some 30,000,000 tons in 1970 to some 264,000,000 tons in 1981, but 1982 was a different story. We lost about 6,000,000 tons of production in that year. In 1983 it&apos;s expected to be a little worse than &apos;82. Coal historically doesn&apos;t rebound from a recession as quickly as other industries. It takes about eight to 10 months longer for us to really get moving again and I&apos;m afraid that you&apos;ll still have to don your fighting helmets and flack jackets when you go out into the market to sell your product. Western coal, as you know, has problems and al l of them are not going away when the recession ends and they won&apos;t go away overnight. I&apos;m sure most of you are aware of what those problems are. Carl Bagge and Jim Harris, along with other speakers, at this meeting have educated us well on those problems and I&apos;m sure you&apos;ll hear more from Jim Watt at today&apos;s luncheon. If everyone in this room were asked to list three orfourof the most serious problems facing western coal, I&apos;d make book that the total of the answers wouldn&apos;t vary by more than 3 to 5%, if that much. But coal is not the only mining segment in the U.S. with problems. Metal and non-metal mining has its share, too. I&apos;d like to step back into the past for a few minutes, if I may, to a time when our problems were just beginning. Since 1979 a third of the nation&apos;s mines, including coal, metal and nonmetal have been shut down. The total volume of all mining in the U.S. in that year totaled some $24 billion. Today that figure has dropped some 21 %. The after tax rate on return for mining companies has fallen from 6&apos;/% in 1980 to minus 3% in 1983. But that&apos;s really not where our problems began. They began 20 years ago when a profound change began taking place in the U.S. economy. Our economy had been growing at about 2&apos;/-3% annually without exception except for the great depression. Our inflation rate was about I&apos;/%, interest rates were running about 6%, and the federal budget was $77 billion, really great figures compared to today. From 1960 to 1980 the federal budget increased almost 1.000% and taxed paid by individual families increased by 700% during that same period. Despite the huge increases in taxes, the federal deficit kept getting larger and larger year after year and within this 20 year period the national debt climbed to a trillion dollars. Economic progress of this type can&apos;t continue indefinitely without some serious consequences. The result of that economy, well, you know what happened and there is a direct relationship of that

INTRODUCTION Block caving is distinguished from other types of mining in its requirements that the mineral body to be extracted must cave after a relatively large tabular open¬ing is created underneath it, and that the caving must be predictable and controllable for both operating and safety reasons. A mineral body that caves readily may present special problems with respect to ground support in the mining access openings, where stability, rather than failure, is the desired objective. The complete ex¬traction of a caving block, which may measure 50 to 100 m on a side and 100 to 300 m in height, tends to create a large void, resulting in significant changes in the ground stress system and a migration of rock from all directions toward the void; these events begin very early in the life of the mine and lead to additional spe¬cial problems with respect to control of ground move¬ments in the mine working areas, in the rock adjacent to the caving stope, and on the subsiding surface above the mine. Thus, the mechanics of an undercut-cave operation involve a broad range of geotechnical subject matter, including the determination of the lithostatic earth stresses, the structural properties of a large jointed rock mass, the flow properties of the fragments after caving, the stability of tunnel-like openings, and the stability and displacements of the rock structure (1 to 2 km in size) that surrounds the ore body. The objectives are achieved by in-place measurement of rock properties, laboratory tests, theoretical structural analyses of the related prob¬lems, measurements of structural behavior in and above the mine, and comparison of theoretical predictions with actual performance in order to interpret and refine the predictive capability. Undercut-cave mining (Julin, et al., 1973) differs from most other methods in that the caving is an essen¬tial and inherent part of the excavation process and in¬volves the movements of millions of cubic meters of rock over distances of hundreds of meters, as compared to the gradual 2-m settling of the overburden typical of full¬caving longwall coal mining. Undercut-cave mining may involve a rock mass on the scale of a 1-km diam open¬pit mine, but mining is several times deeper than that in the open-pit mine; furthermore, a large portion of the rock mass is in a failed, rather than a stable, state. Ground-control problems are inevitable in a situa¬tion where ground movements are occurring on such a large scale, and where the rock mass is expected con¬veniently to cave at one location but to be stable at an¬other. To devise effective responses to these ground¬control problems, one needs to know first of all what is happening, not merely at the point where the symptoms are observed, but more broadly with respect to the be¬havior of the entire mine rock-mass structure over the total area of extraction, including the effects on the sur¬face as well as those underground. Monitoring structural behavior on this scale would require a sizable group of people, if they attempted to measure all the significant mining-induced changes of ground displacement and pressure, even on a 100-m grid of points. The practical approach is to conduct the mea¬surements activity by a judicious sampling, making in¬termittent, concentrated efforts in selected areas of lim¬ited extent to study problems of immediate importance; simultaneously a minimum level of surveillance is main¬tained over the total structure to delineate long-term be¬havior trends in the major structure, which provide the baseline reference data that are so essential for interpre¬tive purposes. Mine-structure behavior depends not only on the mine extraction configuration and sequence, but on the rock structural properties and how they change from one location to another in the mine. Increasing attention is being given to determinations of rock strength and de¬formation by performing mechanical properties tests in place and in the laboratory, and by drawing inferences from the mapping of geologic structure in mine openings as they are driven and from the logging of cores ob¬tained from exploration drilling that may be performed primarily for delineating ore reserves. Monitoring of mine-structure behavior and inter¬preting it in terms of the growing excavations and the structural properties of the rocks have significant im¬pacts on designing the major undercut-cave operations of undercutting and drawing the ore, supporting the ac¬cess openings, and controlling surface subsidence. The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the com¬mon ground-control problems encountered in undercut¬cave mining, to relate them to the mining process, and to explain the geomechanical approaches to analyzing these problems with emphasis on methods that are most readily available to the mine staff. UNDERCUTTING, CAVING, AND DRAWING A distinguishing characteristic of an undercut-caving method of extraction is the objective that the rock mass fails of its own weight in a predictable and controllable manner, after it is undercut by excavating a tabular¬shaped void, horizontal or inclined. Induced or forced caving refers to procedures that may be resorted to when the ore will not self-cave over the desired span. Block caving, panel caving, and mass caving are terms used to denote the particular sequence of undercutting and ex¬tracting the total area of the ore body on a single min¬ing level. The discussion herein is not specialized to any of these variations; the word block as used does not imply anything as to sequence. CREATING THE UNDERCUT A common undercutting method is to drive a series of drifts and blast the intervening pillars. Theoretical structural analysis and practical experience show that ground-support problems in the undercutting drifts and in underlying access openings as well (the same princi¬ple applies even if undercutting is done by belling out drawpoints from the slusher drifts) are minimized by retreat-mining across the undercut slot according to a sequence such that the growing undercut area retains a
