SINCE the opening of the Wheeler oil and gas field in Carter County and the discovery of oil near Lawton, Comanche County, Okla., in 1904, interest has been aroused regarding the origin of the oil in the Permian "Red Bed" region which lies between the Wichita and Arbuckle Mountains on the north and the Red River on. the south. . The later development of the Healdton, Loco, Duncan, Fox, and Graham fields south and west of the Arbuckle Mountains has brought the region into prominence. Recent discoveries of Ordovician and of Pennsylvanian fossils in wells in the Healdton field and of Pennsylvanian fossils in the Fox and Graham fields are of such importance from a scientific and a commercial standpoint that the occurrences and the problems arising therefrom are here briefly described. Producing oil and gas sands in the southern Oklahoma fields, with the exception -of those in the Cretaceous and underlying rocks in the vicinity of Madill, Marshall. County, are associated with the Permian "Red Beds" or with the underlying Paleozoic strata. I n the two fields farthest south of the Arbuckle Mountains, Healdton and Loco, production has been entirely confined to sands at depths of 700 to 1400 ft. (213 to 416 m.) and only recently has a producing sand as deep as 1860. ft. (567 m.) L been encountered. These sands are found near and below the base of the red rocks and were supposed by Wegemann and Heald 2 to belong in large part to the basal Permian,. Wichita formation, or to the immediately underlying formations. Fossils in the blue shales and in the limestones associated with the deeper sands' now prove them to be Pennsylvanian and all-the producing sands at Healdton are found to be of this age. In the fields nearest the Arbuckle Mountains, the Wheeler sands at a depth of about 700 ft. (213 m.) appear to be of Permian age,

Introduction A new technology is evolving as a result of growing industry and government concerns over the potential impacts of possible airborne emissions from uranium tailings piles. A major component of the technology is the use of earth covers to stabilize the tailings after mill operations have ceased. While various analytical models have been used to predict the thickness of required covers, experimental validation of the models has been necessary. This paper presents the results of a field program to select and test cover material to determine its suitability for eventual reclamation of a currently active tailings pile. The two main criteria guiding the study were the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission radon flux requirements (reduction to less than twice background pre-1979, and to 2 pCi/m2 -sec above background post-1979) and the desire to employ locally available material. The methodology chosen for this study consisted of three main elements: o Determination of the background radon flux. o Determination of the radon flux from the tailings pile. o Experimental determination of the cover material diffusion coefficient and and calculation of cover thickness. The first two elements of the study are relatively straightforward, the last phase is discussed in detail. Background Radon Flux Measurements of radon-222 emanation rates from the surface of the ground were taken at three sampling locations. Samples were collected by means of the accumulator can method described by Wilkening, 1977. Both morning and afternoon samples were collected at each site to obtain an average. The measured fluxes were fairly uniform and did not differ greatly among sites. The overall average flux for all sites was 0.63[+]0.28(o) pCi/m2 -sec. This value is equal to the average radium-226 concentration determined in the soil, thus yielding a one to one ratio of radon-222 emitted (in pCi/m2 -sec) to soil radium content (in pCi/g). Forrestania Nickel Mines is owned and operated by Outokumpu Mining Australia Pty Ltd and is situated 400 km east of Perth, WA in the Forrestania Greenstone Belt. Production started in late-1992 at a rate of 600 ktpa and reserves were exhausted in August 1999. Cosmic Boy is the largest of three mines worked and operates in a high stress environment with both very high and very low rock mass strength domains. Stoping commenced in 1995 using conventional benching with long hole slot rises but because of drilling and blasting problems the mine switched to airleg rising. In 1997 the mining method was changed to smaller scale up hole retreat benching with each stope requiring a slot rise of up to 16 m length. This method does not allow top access to the rise location and so airleg rising was used until mid-1998. At this stage mining was approaching areas of higher stress for which it was clear that an alternative to this entry method of rising was required. Small diameter raise boring and Cubex rigs were considered but because of the set up costs were not considered to be viable. Since the ore is relatively soft, burn cuts were developed to make use of specially designed 152, 203 and 254 mm diameter reamer bits (depending on the rise length) and drilled with conventional long hole drilling equipment. These rises are fired in one blast together with the slot rings. In the northern lower section of the mine (below 400 m) the principle stress has been estimated at 60 MPa and this causes minor strain bursting in BIF development headings and loose material to form on walls and backs. Trials of destress blasting modelled on Canadian experience has greatly reduced strain bursting at the face. However only around 300 m of development was affected and so this method had not been optimised when mine development was completed.

Lacy copper has been an on-going concern at Atlantic Copper for at least 10 years and was first reported to Glencore Technology in mid-2010. Over the past 12 years, many of the plates were replaced due to age and general deterioration however; plate passivation and lacy copper issues have persisted. After analyzing all the possible causes of this phenomena, it was found that the problem is caused by a degradation of stainless steel as a consequence of the deposition of Sb oxides. These deposits act as passivating agents of stainless steel, which reduces the density of copper nuclei, causing defective copper deposit, with low thickness and ductility. After doing several tests for reducing/removing the phenomena, the over-riding factor was found to be the anode-cathode overlap. An adequate overlap eliminates the problem of "lacy copper". This was verified during an eight month trial with anodes extended 2.5cm in length. Longer anode not only avoids the appearance of lacy copper, but also recovers cathodes that already have lacy copper. On the other hand polishing of plates only gives rise to a temporary solution that requires on-going polishing, to avoid the re-appearance of lacy copper. INTRODUCTION The electrolytic copper refinery of Atlantic Copper in Huelva (Spain) was commissioned in 1970 with an initial capacity of 40,000 t of cathodes per year. In 1975 the copper refinery was expanded to 108,000 t/year. From 1994 to 1996, a new expansion together with the implementation of ISA permanent cathode technology led to a capacity of 215,000 t/y. Since 1995, a progressive increase in the current density up to 350 A/m2 has been accomplished, which together with an increase in the number of cells from 1,120 to 1,204, has led to the present cathode production capacity of 290,000 t/y A lack of copper deposition in the lower part of the steel permanent cathodes was first reported in 2010. This phenomenon is known as “Lacy copper” because of the appearance of the copper deposit as it can be seen in Figure 1. The occurrence of this phenomena was relatively low and was assumed to be originated by an excessive anode scrapping. Nevertheless, in December 2015 Lacy Copper was observed in a significant amount of copper cathodes giving rise to the following issues: Increased tramp copper – housekeeping and maintenance problems Poor appearance of cathode deposit and untidy looking bundles

Detailed knowledge of velocity-depth trends is essential for constructing well-to seismic ties, determining background velocity and generating synthetic seismic traces for interpreting seismic amplitudes in terms of porosity, lithology and pore fluid type. The acoustic properties of shales are of particular importance in the exploration setting as shales constitute more than 80% of sediments and rocks in siliclastic environments. Seismic and sonic log data may be used for estimating overpressure in shales in order to maintain borehole stability during drilling. In addition, velocities in shales can be used for predicting its mechanical properties and hence, borehole collapse. Despite of the apparent importance of understanding shale acoustics, sonic logs in shales are frequently unavailable or unreliable especially for older wells. Hence, it is essential to compute pseudo-velocity logs from other available information. This can be accomplished by using empirical relationships or rock physics transforms. In this study we have compared the predictive power of resistivity (Faust 1951, Hubert 2008) and porosity based models (Wyllie 1956, Holt & Fjær 2003) for computing synthetic P-wave velocity logs using wireline log data from mudstone intervals at three North Sea wells. The wells 6507/2-1, 6507/2-2 and 6507/2-1 are located at the Haltenbanken area at the Norwegian Sea. The wells targeted hydrocarbon potential at the upper Cretaceous and lower Tertiary sandstone sequences. The sandstone beds are overlain by thick Tertiary and Cretaceous sequences of mudstones. Since our primary goal is to model acoustic velocities in shale, we used wireline data from the Nordland (NL), Rogaland (RL) and Hordaland (HL) groups that are mainly composed of mudstone. The mudstone beds were identified from the well log data by using natural gamma log, sonic and resistivity data as well as information from the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate website. The volume of shale was estimated from the natural gamma log and the data points with values higher than 0.65 were discarded. Similarly, the data points with shale volume less than 40 % were discarded. Furthermore, exceptionally high resistivity values amounting to more than 6 Ohm m were not included in the analysis. Porosities were determined from the density log assuming 2.7 and 1.05 g/cm3 for matrix and fluid densities, respectively. The depth that was used for calculating Vp from Faust (1953) was the depth below mudline in order to the compare of well data from wells that have been drilled at different depths (Hubert 2008).

A.B. Rushton The work and resulting publications of the Committee on Underground Coal Mine Safety and The President's Commission on Coal were appropriate at the time of publication. The statistics cited in the publications appeared to be valid, and the actions proposed by the committee had merit. Although the actions proposed to achieve further improvements in safety may have been worthy of repeating, to associate statistics (Table 1) that are seven to eight years old with company names is bad. Statistics are readily available from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and are usually within three months of being up to date. A review of the most recent Coal Controlling Co. Report will reveal significant changes in the rankings. The more recent statistics should have been cited, or at least compared with those used in the article. Westmoreland Coal Co. is listed as having a 21.1 disabling injury rate for the period (1/78-12/80). The disabling injury rate for the Company for the year ending 1985 was 7.4 for the underground mines and 6.25 for the total facilities. Through March 1986, the disabling rate for the underground mines was 2.86. The management and employees of Westmoreland Coal Co. are committed to safety. The improvements achieved over the past five years attest to that commitment. We are justifiably proud of the achievement and dislike being misrepresented as in the April 1986 article. Reply by E.M. Spokes I regret that the lapse of time since the original work gives a picture of safety practice that is no longer true today. That Westmoreland has reduced its disabling injury rate by 65% to 7.4 in 1985 is most commendable, and I congratulate you for this accomplishment. It is typical of the progress sought by the National Academy of Science and National Research Council when they funded the original study and published "Toward Safer Underground Coal Mines" in 1982. If a significant number of companies do as well as Westmoreland, the report will have served its purpose. Since the paper was primarily a condensation of the original report, it would not have been appropriate to seek access to later statistics. The purpose in seeking its publication at the time of presentation was to reach those who might have missed the original report. The fact that publication was delayed has not voided that purpose and may have reminded some who were aware of the original that its recommendations still apply to improvement of underground coal mine safety.

In 1910 the Richmond-Eureka Co. suspended all operations except small-scale leasing, but company and other geologists contended that the El Dorado dolomite would also carry ore in its continuation from fault block north and northeast of the productive old working. The company began to explore the fault block in 1923 by diamond drilling from the,900 level of the Locan shaft, but for various reasons the hole was drilled to a depth of only 2 feet and was then abandoned. Eureka Corporation, Ltd., planned an extensive diamond-drilling program, which included four deep diamond-drill holes, one designated ""A"" fig. if it is to be drilled from the surfaced, and three designated ""E"", ""C"" and ""D"" figs land to be drilled from the 900 level of the Locan shaft. Of these only B and C were completed by the company. Hole C was a contribution,of the hole started by the, started by the Richmond Eureka Co. The site for hole D (figs. 1 and 2) was prepared, but the hole was not drilled. Both B and C holes penetrated sulfide ore carrying good percentages of zinc, lead, gold, and silver. The ore bodies were 40 feet thick and were found approximately 1,400 feet below the 900 level of Locan shaft.On the basis of the very favorable results obtained from the drilling program, the Eureka Corporation planned extensive development of the property and in 1942 commenced sinking the Fad shaft (figs. 1 and 2). The shortage of equipment and materials brought on by the war and difficulties with water in the shaft greatly hindered progress. However, early in 1943 the Eureka Cor¬poration, Ltd., of Canada submitted to the War Production Board a proposal for developing the mine and milling 500 tons of zinc-lead ore a day. The proposal involved an expenditure of $2,890,750."

In the summer of 1917 it was decided to fireproof the main tramway hoisting shaft of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. at Butte, Mont. The shaft has three hoisting compartments and one pump compartment; it is timbered with 12 by 12-in. (30.5 by 30.5-cm.) fir timber, and is 2475 ft. (754 m.) deep. Subsidence and displacement of the surrounding country rock had produced exceedingly heavy ground, and had carried the shaft out of line, in several places, by as much as 2 ft. (0.6 m.) displacement. Constant repairing and realigning of the timbers had been necessary in order to maintain clearance for the cages. The most feasible method of fireproofing, therefore, seemed to be to cover the timbers with a coat of concrete applied with the cement gun. The cement gun, which is operated by compressed air at ordinary mine pressures, feeds a mixture of sand and cement through a hose to a nozzle having a water connection. The mortar in fluid form is thus sprayed upon the prepared surface in thin layers, which can be built up to any desired thickness. The cement gun can be set up at any convenient point; satisfactory results have been obtained with the nozzle a distance of 500 ft. (152 m.) from the gun. The shaft was thoroughly overhauled and the timbers put in the best possible state of repair. Between the 1000 and the 1400 levels, much loose ground lay against the shaft timbers on the north side; this was breast-boarded back and a 30-in. (76-cm.) reinforced-concrete retaining wall was erected, leaving a space of 12 in. (30.5 cm.) outside the shaft timbers to allow for future movements of the ground. For convenience in handling men and materials; it was arranged to concrete the auxiliary hoisting-cage compartment and the pump compartment first, using the cages of the main hoist to serve the cementing crews. The auxiliary cage was then available while the remainder of the shaft was being concreted.

"Colombian nickel laterites have historically been processed by pyrometallurgy. However, due to the depletion in ore grades, alternative processes are required. Hydrometallurgical processes, such as pressure acid leaching, have been proposed as alternatives to extract nickel from deposits with suitable characteristics. Such a leaching process requires high concentrations of acid to achieve acceptable extractions, and is not selective. In this study, an alternative aqueous alkaline glycine system has been employed to evaluate the leaching behaviour of a Colombian nickel laterite which contains 1.15% Ni, 0.12% Co and 41.1% Fe. Additionally, the effect of the addition of chloride ions, the use of a reducing agent and the application of a pre-treatment to improve the extraction of nickel were evaluated. Extractions of 4.63% Ni, 42.16% Co and 0.33% Fe were obtained using a 1M solution of glycine at pH 9. In addition, an increase in nickel extraction from 4.63% to 25.68% was achieved by applying a pre-treatment to the sample. The results show that even though nickel dissolution was much slower than in acid leaching, it was selective over other metals such as iron, proving the proposed method to have potential as a process for the extraction of nickel from Colombian laterites.INTRODUCTION Before 2010, most of the industrial operations used pyrometallurgical processes for the extraction of nickel, mainly in saprolitic regions of deposits, with greater contents of the metal. Nevertheless, due to the gradual depletion of such deposits, different hydrometallurgical processes have been studied as alternatives to process those nickel laterites with low grade and those which present problems of refractoriness due to the presence of acid consuming materials (McDonald & Whittington, 2008; Oxley & Barcza, 2013; Wang et al., 2012). However, such leaching processes require high concentrations of acid to achieve acceptable extractions and they are not selective. Facing lateritic nickel ore deposits containing high levels of acid consuming materials, an alkaline leaching medium becomes an advantageous alternative over acidic media, due to the increase in selectivity and decreased corrosiveness and reagent consumption (Tanda, Eksteen, & Oraby, 2017). Unlike conventional acidic reagents used for metal recovery, alkaline reagents can selectively dissolve the desired metal, leaving in the solid residue other elements such as iron, magnesium and aluminum, which are problematic in subsequent stages of metals separation and recovery. Furthermore, there are no serious corrosion problems associated with alkaline leaching, even at higher reagent concentrations, or at elevated temperature and pressure (Ntumba Malenga, Mulaba-Bafubiandi, & Nheta, 2015)."

LLOYDMINSTER is the centre of a well developed agricultural area, lying on the Alberta-Saskatchewan interprovincial boundary in Township Fifty. The surrounding country is gently undulating, without any notable topographic features, but twenty-two miles to the north the North Saskatchewan river, and thirty miles to the south the Battle river, have cut deep valleys. In the spring of 1934, a wild-cat well (Lloydminster Gas Company's No. 1 well) was successful in striking a large flow of gas at a depth o 1,974 ? feet. The gas was piped into the town, a short distance south, and Lloyd-minster became the first Saskatchewan town to be served with natural gas. Following this discovery, other wells were sunk and, up to the present, thirteen wells have been drilled m what is here designated the Lloydminster area. Ten of these wells are in Saskatchewan and three in Alberta. Seven were successful in obtaining gas, three oil, and three have been unsuccessful. The area tested by this drilling is about eight thousand acres, six thousand of which can be considered as proved gas or oil land. To the south and west of Lloydminster, in the Province of Alberta, there are several areas in which oil and gas have been discovered. The Wainwright field lies nearly fifty miles to the southwest; Battleview, where recently gas has been discovered, is thirty miles west-southwest; and the Ribstone area is about thirty miles south and a little west. At Ribstone, a number of wells were drilled some years ago and there is a small production of oil. The data relating to the wells in the Lloydminster area that are recorded in this paper are taken from the records of the several companies operating in the field. The names of these companies are given on the map and on the type stratigraphic section (Figures 1 and 2). The author wishes to record his appreciation to Mr. R. H. Shaw and Mr. 0. C. Yates, both of Lloyd-minster, for much valuable information; also to Mr. E. Swain, of the Department of Natural Resources, Regina, with whom the writer has visited the field on several occasions, and who, by his enthusiasm and encouragement, has done much to forward the development of the area. The well samples were examined at Ottawa by officers of the Borings Division of the Geological Survey of Canada, who also made the interpretations of the logs. Frequent references will be made to the work of Dr. G. S. Hume, of the Geological Survey, and the writer would like to pay tribute here to his work.

"Increased rail capacity is required into Kooragang Coal Terminal near Newcastle, NSW, Australia to relieve rail traffic congestion and improve management of train arrivals. An additional arrivals track is proposed on new embankment within a heavily constrained site located between existing railway tracks, a high pressure gas pipeline located 7m beyond the toe of the embankment and an environmentally sensitive wetland area. Ground conditions at the site consist of deep soft estuarine clays, a soil profile which is consistently encountered throughout this part of the east coast of Australia. Upon determining that a ground improvement solution was required to ensure global embankment stability, various solutions were considered including a piled viaduct, retaining walls, dry deep soil mix (DSM) columns and concrete injected columns (CICs). DSM columns were adopted as the design solution, a decision which was driven by the presence of sensitive infrastructure and a confined site. DSM offered further advantages including reduced impacts on temporary working platform design, where the use of a thinner platform could be justified owing to the lower track loads of a DSM rig relative to other ground improvement techniques.INTRODUCTIONThis paper presents a case study of the design of DSM ground improvement works to provide support for and enable safe construction of a new railway embankment over deep soft soils with a number of nearby infrastructure and other constraints. The project site is approximately 1km long and is constrained by existing railway tracks, a high pressure gas pipeline and a wetland area of ecological significance. Due to the site constraints and ground conditions, a number of ground improvement techniques were considered during the design process, with DSM columns eventually adopted. This paper discusses the design development and the particular suitability of the technique for use in this application.SITE DESCRIPTIONLandformThe site is located along the northern boundary of the Kooragang Coal Terminal (KCT) at Kooragang Island (KI), a collection of former islands located near the mouth of the Hunter River, north of Newcastle, NSW. The topography of the original area was generally flat with mudflats, swamps and mangroves existing along tidal water courses. Subsequent dredged fill reclamation and development has amalgamated the previous islands into the current KI. The site area extends over numerous channel infills including the buried former course of the Moschetto Channel (paleochannel).Figure 1 shows the proposed 1km long new rail corridor construction area in relation to the various natural and man-made site constraints including existing tracks, the high pressure gas pipeline, the wetland area and the existing reclaimed area."

Since 2019, approximately two dozen international battery recycling companies have been operating at the commercial or pilot scale [1]. However, current process capacity does not exceed 100,000 tons of end-of-life (EOL) lithium-ion batteries (LIB) per year, and the current recycling rate is only about 5% in North America [2-3]. Recycling metals from EOL LIBs is not only essential to waste minimization and environmental stewardship, but also a source of critical materials, which can contribute towards supply chain stabilization. LIB recycling can be roughly divided into three categories: direct recycling, pyrometallurgy, and hydrometallurgy. Direct recycling seeks to retain as much of the manufactured effort with minimum chemical processing [4]. The evolution of battery designs and chemical compositions are challenges to this approach [5-6]. Pyrometallurgical processes are robust and flexible allowing a broad spectrum of batteries with minimum pre-processing requirements. Some of the matrix issues are solved through combustion of some constituents. Smelting is strongly tied to fossil energy and air emissions are a concern. In addition, pyrometallurgical processes are not stand alone, as hydrometallurgical refining normally required to separate and recover the metals of interest (Co, Ni, and Cu) from the produced alloy and Li from the slag [7]. Hydrometallurgical processes can be highly selective and efficient in recovering high purity materials [8]. In general, hydrometallurgical processes are considered cleaner and less costly than high temperature processes [4,9-10]. Extensive chemical consumption and waste generation significantly increase the operating costs and overall environmental impact of the hydrometallurgical processes [11]. Leaching of metals from LIBs is dominated by the mixture of sulfuric acid (1 to 4 M H2SO4) and hydrogen peroxide (1 to 15 wt.% H2O2) [10]. Although organic acids have been tested as lower environmental impact alternatives, the reported pulp density operations are low < 60 g/L [10-11]. For the H2SO4/H2O2 leachates, high leaching efficiencies >90% are reported for Co, Ni, Mn, and Li from cathode materials at temperatures over 40 ⁰C and pulp densities between 30 to 200 g/L [9-10]. H2O2 acts as reducing agent to convert Co+3 and Mn+4 into their soluble forms, Co+2 and Mn+2 [12]. Despite the claims of H2O2 being a clean reducing agent [13], production of H2O2 has significant environmental impacts as determined by life-cycle analyses [13-14]. Moreover, the costs and risks associated with H2O2 transportation and storage cannot be ignored [15].

Most of the iron ore washing plants set up in India consist of sizing of the ore by dry / wet screening, washing and classification by screw classifiers followed by multi-stage hydrocycloning of screw classifiers? overflow. The underflow of the hydrocyclones forms the concentrate which is used for pellets making. As the cut-point of hydrocyclones is generally at 20 microns, relatively lower diameter cyclones in a cluster with parallel feeding are used. This is found to, often, result in choking of the spigots, at times, by extraneous material as well reporting along with the slurry. It is observed to lead to sub-optimum performance of the cyclones with loss of iron values into cyclone overflow and thereafter into tailings. Analysis of data of an operating beneficiation plant (Beneficiation Plant - 1, BP - 1) of M/s Jindal South West (JSW) Steel Limited, Karnataka, India over a period of one year indicated that weight recovery of the concentrate from two-stage hydrocycloning was 45% (with respect to feed to the cyclones) and assaying 63.43% Fe, 4.43% SiO2 and 2.32% Al2O3. CSIR - National Metallurgical Laboratory - Madras Centre (NML - MC), India developed flotation process for processing screw classifier overflow with a view to improve the recovery of ultrafine iron values from it. Detailed investigations at laboratory scale flotation column and on-site pilot plant trials proved that the production of the concentrate and productivity of the plant could be enhanced by adopting reverse cationic column flotation technology. It was established that a typical screw classifier overflow analyzing 60.54% Fe, 5.95% SiO2 and 3.67% Al2O3 could be upgraded to 64.21% Fe, 2.64% SiO2 and 2.20% Al2O3 with 82.7% weight and 84.7% Fe recovery. This translates into an increase of 80% in weight recovery of the concentrate compared to what is being obtained, at present, by two-stage cycloning. It had an added advantage of reduced SiO2 in the concentrate. Thus, SiO2 in the final concentrate could be reduced to 2.64% from 4.43% by adopting column flotation. The concentrate so generated meets the stringent specifications, especially in terms of alumina in it(should be less than 2.50%) for pellets making. Later, JSW Steel Limited set up the flotation plant in BP - 1 based on the process developed by NML - MC and was commissioned in 2010. "In this study, the crystallization behavior and thermal expansion coefficient of a lithium disilicate (LS2) based glass-ceramic derived from SiO2-Li02-AhO3-K2O-ZrO2 system was investigated by using x-ray diffraction (XRD), high temperature x-ray diffraction (HTXRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and dilatometer techniques. Analytical reagent grade chemicals were chosen as raw materials for preparing glass batches. Nucleation and crystal growth heat treatments were planned according to DTA results. The amounts of the amorphous and crystalline phases developed during the heat treatments were determined by quantitative XRD. XRD results of crystallized samples showed simultaneous formation of lithium silicate (LS) and quartz in the early stage of the crystallization followed by formation of lithium disilicate (LS2) at higher temperatures. The thermal expansion coefficients of glassceramics were also measured depending on the applied heat treatments.IntroductionSignificant developments occurred in all ceramic materials provide the fabrication of high quality dental implants [1]. Glass ceramic based dental restorations like dental inlays, crowns, bridges and veneers are becoming increasingly popular with their reliable and durable performance [2,3]. In addition to their advanced functional properties, glass ceramic implants especially lithium disilicate glass ceramics also face the esthetics expectations of patients and dentists and in this way they are starting to take the place of metal based restorations today [1,3,4,5]. Lithium disilicate glass-ceramics derived from multicomponent glass systems have some superior mechanical and optical properties comparable to natural teeth [ 6]. In restorative dentistry, mechanical characteristics of biomaterials play very crucial role in order to resist the masticatory forces occurred during biting and chewing [7] According to three point bending test results of Roland, flexural strength of the lithium disilicate glass-ceramics were 400±40 MPa and their fracture toughness (K1c) are approximately 3,3 MPa m112 [2,6]. In addition to high mechanical strength, aesthetic appearance is another important prerequisite as material for dental restorative applications. Translucency and light transmission of the LS2 glass ceramics mimic enamel. Moreover, opacity of the material can also be adjusted depending on the restoration types [2,6, 7]. These superior properties of the LS2 glass ceramics are directly related with chemical composition of the base glasses and controlled crystallization heat treatments [ 4, 7]. The aim of the present work is to determine the effect of heat treatment schedules on the crystallization behavior and thermal expansion of the LS2 glass-ceramics."

Philippines is a country that is richly endowed in mineral wealth. In 1988, Climax Arimco Mining Corp. (CAMC) geologists found the Dinkidi porphyry gold-copper deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province. It is the most significant mineral discovery in that country in recent times. To date, the company has defined indicated resources of 124 Mt (136 million st) of 1-g/t (0.029-oz/st) gold and 0.4% copper. This includes a high-grade core of 7.9 Mt (8.7 million st) of 6-g/t (0.175-oz/st) gold equivalent. Total contained metal is 124.4 t (4 million oz) of gold and 499 kt (1.1 billion lb) of copper. Dinkidi&apos;s discovery resulted from initial geologic reconnaissance and recognition of the intrusive complex that is exposed at surface and anomalous in its topographic expression. This was followed by systematic exploration. This includes extensive gradient array induced polarization (IP), ground magnetics, geochemical sampling and diamond drilling. This later defined a further 16 satellite porphyry targets in the Didipio region. Climax was been granted a Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement contract with the Philippine government. It allows 100% foreign ownership of mining projects. After four years of negotiations, Climax was the first company to have such an application granted. Some 120 applications from numerous international mining companies are waiting for approval following implementation of new Philippine Mining Act of 1995. Exploration history Didipio is located 200 km (125 miles) north of Manila at an elevation of about 700 m (2,300 ft) in the remote Sierra Madre mountains. This region remains mostly unexplored. The property is accessed by 25 km (15 miles) of logging track from the town of Cabarroguis, Quirino. The area experiences an average rainfall of about 3,000 mm (118 in.) a year. Most of it falls during the July-to-November typhoon season. Didipio was first recognized as a gold province in the 1970s when native Ifugao and Ilongot hunters discovered alluvial gold in the region. The region had been prospected over the years by local companies. They were mostly prospecting for alluvial gold. However, in 1988, Climax Mining geologists identified the potential of an obscure razorback ridge protruding from the alluvial valley floor. This ridge, later named Dinkidi by Climax, was the site of several small- scale tunnels. Locals had mined narrow quartz stockwork veining and sluiced soft argillic alteration zones, using irrigation canals and sluice boxes to catch free gold.

Since the inception of the Ashton (formerly Kalumburu) Joint Venture in 1972 the parties have expended $24 million in exploration for diamonds in the Kimberley region. This has resulted in the discovery of the currently subeconomic Ellendale deposits in 1976/77 and the economic Argyle - Smoke Creek Deposits in 1979/80. In addition to Argyle and Ellendale, some 90 kimberlitic and lamproitic bodies have been discovered grouped broadly into three provinces, on the west, east and north margins of the Kimberley block. These bodies range in size from dyke-like features less than 1 m (3 ft) in width to pipes with a surface area of 128 ha (316 acres). The bodies with larger surface area are volcanic crater deposits, infilled with air-fall and water deposited tuffs and epiclastic sediments. Diamond content ranges from trace to economic concentrations. The exploration discoveries were facilitated by early recognition that the petrography, mineralogy and chemistry of the diatremes varied from the classical kimberlites of Kimberley, South Africa, to unusual more highly fractionated, alkaline, silicic varieties having affinities with leucite-lamproite. Indirect methods of exploration were used, primary reconnaissance work being stream gravel sampling for kimberlitic indicator minerals. Evaluation showed Ellendale diamonds are 90% gem and near gem, but the low grades and tonnage render the deposits unpayable at today&apos;s diamond prices. After discovery in late 1979 and completion of a feasibility study by the end of 1982, evaluation studies proved Argyle to be economic. Alluvial diamond mining commenced in 1983 producing 6.2 million carats (Mct) that year, 60% being of industrial quality. Open-pit mining of the AK1 lamproite should start in 198511986 at a rate of 3 million t/a (33 million stpy) and produce 25 Mct/a, making this mine, and Australia, the world&apos;s largest producer of diamonds by weight. The revenue from diamond deposits is a function of the grade and the value of the diamonds. The grade is the product of the frequency of occurrence of the diamonds (stone density) and the mean stone size; the value of the stones is strongly related to their size distribution. During evaluation of the West Australian deposits, the diamond distribution was found to vary markedly in stone density and stone size. These variations corresponded with changes in the rock type hosting the mineralization. As a consequence, geological mapping of individual lamproites within the multiple vents and careful monitoring of the diamond distribution became an important part of the evaluation work. Similar variations in stone size and frequency were found to accord with separate alluvial terraces and fan gravels derived by erosion from the Argyle AK1 lamproite.

Cyanidation is one of the most common practices used in the extraction of gold and silver. One method of application is heap or dump leaching which entails the leaching of the gold or silver ore by spraying or dripping a cyanide lixiviant over the ore and collecting the effluent. The ore is placed on what is known as a leach pad system. A typical leach pad system consists of a foundation, a leakaqe detection system, a liner, and a cover layer (Strachan and van Zyl, 1988). There are many types of liners available for use. The type of liner depends upon what type leaching pad system us used. Generally, leaching pad systems can be categorized into two types: an expandable pad and a reusable pad. An expandable pad exposes the liner to the elements only in the initial stages of ore placement on the leach pad system. A reusable pad exposes the liner to the elements on a periodic basis. In addition to the exposure to the elements, the liner is also under the stress of the ore placed on it and the stress of the vehicular traffic across it. These stresses and exposure to the elements are the major causes of liner failures, which can appear as punctures, tears, cracks, and deterioration. Because of the possibility of the failure of the pads to contain cyanide-laden solutions the designs for liners of pads and ponds have become more and more stringent. Currently, though, there is some recognition that in some locales such stringent design criteria may not be required (Chatwin, 1989). Some soils have significant cyanide attenuation and degradation capacity. It has been found that soils containing carbon- aceous materia1 wi11 remove cyanide from solutions percolating through them (Chatwin, 1989). Of course metallurgists have long recognized the deleterious effect of carbonaceous material in the mill circuit. Sheridan, et a1 (1988) have shown that WAD cyanide is detected in the effluent of a 2 m column filled with ground carbonaceous ore only after it had been continuously washed with greater than 9 pore volumes of NaCN solution. It was decided to examine the potential of successfully attenuating cyanide by placing an organic material layer between a 1iner and the prepared soil base. One consideration for the selection of the organic material was cost. Sawmill wastes, ground agricultural wastes (such as corn cobs), and other organic wastes were considered. But the first waste to be tested was a product found at any metropolitan area, sewage sludge.

The high corrosion resistance possessed by tin under most circumstances, combined with its generally satisfactory appearance and useful physical properties, has led to many and varied uses for the metal. These uses have been partly limited by the fact that tin is an expensive metal, therefore many applications have been developed in which tin has been employed in combination with lead, either by coating, as in tin-lined collapsible tubes, or by the formation of alloys containing various proportions of tin-rich and lead-rich phases, as tcrne plate. A detailed knowledge of the corrosion characteristics of the tin-lead couple therefore is of general interest and has become specially important at the present time, when every effort is being made to conserve tin as much as possible. The present study has been limited to carbonate solutions with a pH range from 8.4 to 11.2 so that the results may be related to earlier work on the corrosion of tin and its alloys. 1-3,6 In these papers, the effects of a number of anion and cation additions to these solutions have been observed. Apparatus and Method The electrodes for the corrosion cell were cut from rolled sheet about 1/16 in. thick. The length of all specimens was held constant at 7 in., while the width was varied from M to 2 in. These electrodes were fastened to brass electrode supports, which were attached to rubber stoppers fitting into tall-type one-liter Pyrex beakers that contained the electrolyte. The lead electrodes were prepared from Omaha pig* and the tin was rolled from a slab of Chempur.† After cutting to size, the sheets were polished with No. I emery paper and cleaned with carbon tetrachloride. The edges, back and upper parts of the specimen were coated with a synthetic lacquer, which was supplemented with beeswax for the lead electrodes. The binding posts were coated with beeswax after the electrodes had been clamped. The pH of the electrolyte was controlled by adjusting the ratio of carbonate to bicarbonate. Approximately 600 ml. of electrolyte was used in each beaker. The entire assembly was placed in an oil bath thermostatically adjusted to operate at 30°C. + 0.1". Potentials were measured against a saturated calomel electrode connected to the cell by an agar-agar salt bridge.
