INCE1 proposed that electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles was responsible for slime-coating. Del Giudice2 postulated the metathetic formation of a cementing compound. Wark3 suggested that prevention of slime-coating was related to peptization of the slime. [ ] In the experiments of Table I the technique employed was essentially that of del Giudice, with the difference that the particle was examined under a film of water rather than dry.4 In general, the polished particle was agitated for 2 min. in a pulp consisting of 12.5 grams of the slime (-200 mesh) and 50 c.c. of distilled water, washed in three baths of distilled water, and examined at 220 diameters with the Leitz Ultropak. Observations of Brownian movement were made at 850 diameters with dark-field illumination. Several of these experiments do not jibe with the metathesis theory. According to published solubilities,5,6 the lead salts of the anions in experiments [c] through g are more insoluble than lead carbonate, therefore should prevent the formation of lead carbonate on the galena surface. In experiment [i] the calcium oxalate, which presumably was on the calcite surfaces, should have permitted the formation of a lead carbonate cement by virtue of its greater solubility. Experiments [j] through m show that the addition of lime accelerates the deposition of quartz onto a galena surface. The writer is unable to postulate a satisfactory cementing compound, according to the metathesis theory, to explain this effect. A 2 m. cube of jointed, Pre Cambrian biotite gneiss was subjected to uniaxial and biaxial loading at ambient and elevated temperature. The effects of different boundary conditions on the following rockmass properties were investigated: deformation modulus, joint stiffness, dynamic modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity and conductivity, and joint permeability. Test conditions ranged between 0 and 6.9 MPa uniaxial and biaxial load, and 12° to 74°C mean block temperature. The tests were performed as part of the Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation program for evaluating site charterization test methods for measuring the hydro-thermal-mechanical properties of rock masses. The fracture flow experiments discussed in this paper were described in detail in a similar paper given to this symposium in 1981 (Voegele, 1981). DEFORMATION MODULUS Horizontal deformation measurements oriented parallel to the loading direction were made at the block surface. Several instrument types were employed: surface short-rod extensometers, bonded strain gauges, vibrating wire strain gauges and the Whittemore caliper strain gauge. Two vertical and two slant borehole extensometers measured vertical displacement. Loading history, especially during uniaxial loading, was critical to interpretation of observed deformation and fracture flow data. This important tendency has been observed in other large-scale laboratory (Bandis, 1980) and field tests (Pratt, et al., 1977). Excavation of the block resulted in minimal disturbance to the intrinsic condition of the sample. Even so, permanent, unrecovered "set" was imparted to the block beginning with the first low-stress biaxial load cycle to 3.45 MPa (Table 1). Unloading

A group of prominent engineers and contractors of Chicago and vicinity have cooperated in forming a Joint Committee on Military Engineering. The founders are members of all of the leading engineering and contracting organizations of Chicago, including the local branches of the national engineering societies. The purposes of the Committee are to further military preparedness among engineers, contractors and their associates by the following means: (1) Courses of lectures; (2) assigned reading; (3) studies and practical instruction in military engineering;. (4) assisting engineers to qualify as officers in the National Reserve Corps of Civilian Engineers; (5) urging enlistment in and support for engineer troops of the National Guard and such other organizations as the Government may create; (6) furthering instruction in military engineering in training camps and the attendance in them of those qualified; (7) by such other means as from time to time may be deemed advisable. The Joint Committee has already prepared a program covering the vital points outlined. To date the program is practically complete for a period extending from April 20 to July 25. Something of interest will be taken up each week, including lectures by Lieutenant-Colonel W. B. Judson, Engineer Corps, U. S. Army; two lectures by Major P. S. Bond, Engineer Corps, U. S. Army; Lieutenant-Colonel Mason M. Patrick, Engineer Corps, U. S. Army, and several exhibition drills, terrain exercises and inspection trips under the direction and guidance of various officers of the Engineer Troops of the Illinois National Guard. Additions to the program will be made from time to time.

Superficially these sporadic salt occurrences appear to be much alike, but closer examination reveals individual characteristics, and after four years of observation it seems possible to divide them into three general groups that may tentatively be called "depositional," "erosional," and "structural." The data collected are not yet sufficient to permit forecasts of their probable location, so that the annoyance of having to mine salt instead of potash could be avoided or lessened. However, the information so far available appears to throw some light on the occurrence of the sylvinite2 bed now being mined, and it is as a progress report that the writer presents the results of his observations. The mines of the United States Potash Co. and the Potash Company of America are about 20 miles northeast of Carlsbad, in Eddy County, N. M. They are on the southwestern flank of the Permian salt basin, which underlies western Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, south-central Nebraska, southeastern Colorado and eastern New Mexico. The cuttings from many oil wells and the cores from the potash tests drilled in this basin indicate that this salt series approached its greatest thick-ness (about 4000 ft.) in the southeastern part of New Mexico and the adjoining portions of Texas, and that the most advanced stages of

Prof. Henry M. Howe, New York, N. Y. (communication to the Secretary*):—The results presented in Mr. Mathewson's paper are of very great interest. Perhaps the most interesting is that shown in Table I. and Fig. 1, in which the arsenic decreases in 10 min. from 0.22 to 0.07 per cent. This is such a large decrease that it is to be hoped that Mr. Mathewson will verify it by repeating his tests with a matte of similar composition. This is particularly to be desired, because the simultaneous removal of sulphur appears to be very small. All three blows further agree in showing that the removal of arsenic is in the very early part of the blow. The fact that the removal of arsenic then ceases abruptly cannot be explained completely by the fact that the arsenic has fallen so low as by its lowness to resist further removal, because in the first blow the arsenic becomes stationary at 0.06 per cent., whereas in the third blow it does not become stationary until it has fallen to 0.034 per cent. The abrupt ending of the removal of arsenic is more likely to find its explanation in the composition of the slag, and it is to be hoped that Mr. Mathewson will supplement these extremely valuable data with others in which the composition of the slag at the same time shall be given. The sudden rise of arsenic toward the end of the third blow I suppose must be referred to an error in sampling or analysis.

The rapid increase in the use of pulvcrulent adsorptive materials in the so-called "contact filtration" process for decolorizing lubricating oils makes it desirable to consider some of the basic principles involved. The commercial methods and types of equipment now used arc fairly well known, having been extensively described in the trade journals. In spite of this very little has been published concerning the factors which must be considered in the selection of a process or of a decolorizing ing material. It is commonly understood that contact filtration more or less closely follows the laws of adsorption. These principles have been thoroughly drscribed by Gurwitsch.' The contacting of neutral mineral oils seems to be adsorptive in character and apparently follows Freundlich's law of adsorption which may be expressed by the formula: X = Color material adsorbed hy the clay. M = Amount of clay used. C = Concentration of color material after equilibrium. A and P = Constants for a given oil and clay. Fig. 1 shows the decolorization curve for a natural, dark colored cylin-der stock when contacted with various quantities of clay, curve R being made with natural Riverside Texas fuller's earth and T being made with an acid-treated clay from Texas. As the Tag-Robinson color is inversely proportional to the depth of color, the reciprocal of these colors ran be assumed to be a funct ion of the concentratlion of coloring matter. "The original grinding circuit at East Malartic consisted of two 8 by 8 C.A.C. mills in closed circuit with two 72 inch Akins Classifiers and an 8 by 10 secondary mill in closed circuit with two 48 inch duplex classifiers. With this circuit, we experienced a drastic drop in tonnage from one month to another, due to variations in the hardness of the ore. The first step to overcome this difficulty was made by increasing the critical speeds of the mills from 78% to 82%. This resulted in an increase in the secondary mill throughput; but, when the change was made on the primary mills no increase was obtained.The drastic drops in tonnage were still experienced and through working with Allis Chalmers the 8 by 10 mill was converted to a rod mill and the two 8 by 8 n1ills to secondary mills. This change eliminated the two 72 inch Atkins classifiers and the scoops on all the mills, since the 48 inch Akins classifiers sands could then be fed by gravity to the secondary mills through feed pipes.The rod mill and secondary mill discharges were fed to a common pump box using 5 by 5 S.R.L.'s running at 1085 R.P.M. with a twenty-five foot head. When this was done the pumping costs jumped from $105. 00 for 6 months to $1050. 00 in one month, or from 0. 0004 to 2. 75 cents a ton milled. Mechanized mining in the underground coal industry has continued to evolve since the introduction of the remote control mining machine. Remote control continuous mining machines without an onboard operator’s compartment are now the norm in the industry. Extended cuts in excess of 30 ft (9.1 m) are commonplace. Unfortunately, machine operator positioning has become an often unrecognized safety concern, particularly when remote control continuous mining machines excavate a turn (turn a crosscut). From January 2001 through July 2004, remote control continuous mining machine operators or helpers have been involved in ten roof fall fatalities and eight machinery crushing fatalities. The machinery crushing incidents occurred when machines were being repositioned or moved to another place. Of the ten roof fall fatalities, three occurred while a crosscut was being turned and a fourth fatality occurred while mining was being conducted adjacent to the crosscut. The operating time associated with turning crosscuts is a relatively small part of the mining cycle. In recent years, however, a disproportionate number of fatal incidents appear to have been associated with this activity. Procedures for reducing the incidence of operator fatalities while turning crosscuts are discussed. These techniques include: minimizing the number of turn cuts, limiting turn cut depth, establishing no work zones and using visual warning devices to designate them, installing more roof/rib support in the vicinity of the turn cut, using notch cuts prior to initiating a full turn cut, and positioning the remote control miner operator in nontraditional locations.

The system of short term forecast of metal prices at LME is based on correlation between prices within the quarter forward and at the first place by economic parameters at the West, determining the consumption of metals. Such economic parameters are presented by data of indexes of Western World industrial production (WW IP), official data of IP and Dow Jones indexes at USA. For price forecast within the quarter forward (one day ahead, 3 day -65 days MA forward prices) are significant the changes of actual prices (official and close) at the past and the parameters of daily trade at LME at the past (futures turnover, open interest, LME stocks). It is developed subsystem of price forecast within the quarter forward based on analytical approach determining the relations between the participants of the market. It gives the opportunity to reduce the number of empirical coefficients at the model and receive good accuracy of forecast the MA prices and its direction at the future. Very important part of short term forecast is subsystem determining analytically the probability that the price forecasted for the next trading day will be the maximum or minimum daily price within the quarter forward. The thresholds probabilities are defined by identification the model at the past by maximal commercial efficiency. Such system was tested at the past at period since 2000 till 2005 and gives very high commercial results at operations on 1M forwards and hedging the sales of nonferrous metals traded at LME (primary aluminium, light alloys, nickel, copper, zinc, lead and tin).

After an enjoyable dinner the meeting was called to order, and the first paper by Ralph Arnold on Conservation of Oil and Gas in the Americas was read by the Secretary. W. F. Staunton then read an important paper on The Influence of California Oil on the Mining Industry of the West. In this he touched upon the uses of oil as a fuel for generating power, especially in connection with the Diesel engine. This paper was discussed it some length by J. F. Mitchell-Roberts, R. B. Moran, F. H. Asbury and L. D. Godshall. The Chair then introduced Robert B. Moran of the California State Mining Bureau, Deputy Supervisor of Gas and Oil, for the' Los Angeles . Porphyry type mineralization of Lower Cretaceous age in eastern Queensland has been recognized only from the easternmost part of the northern New England Orogen (Day, Murray and Whitaker, 1978), within the northern Yarrol Province (Horton,1982). Recent work about the Mt. Suthers (Pb, Zn, Ag, Cu, Au), Lug-e-nor (Cu, Pb, Zn, Ag, Au, Mo), and German Tully (Cu, Au, Bi) prospects suggest that there has been a phase of porphyry type mineralization within the Gympie Province, of Lower Cretaceous age, overprinting earlier Permo-Triassic phases. About the Mt. Suthers Prospect surface samples of shallow, medium to heavy textured soils derived from marine sedimentary rocks of Permian age, and extrusive and intrusive igneous rocks of intermediate composition and Triassic age, were analysed for Cu, Zn, Pb, Co, Cr, Ni, Fe, V, Mn and Ag. Whereas strong iithological control determined the distribu- tion of Cu (diorite) and of Cr, Ni, Fe and V ,sedimentary rocks), the distribution of Pb, Zn, Ag and of Cu, were determined by mineralization of faults by a cavity fill hydrothermal process. Gold is associated with the Pb, Zn, Ag mineralization. Co and Mn showed distributions independent of lithology and structure. The fault controlled style of mineraliz- ation at Mt. Suthers is repeated at other localities to the south; Calgoa, Marodian, and German Gully. Relative dating of structural features and isotopic dating of nornblende porphyrites (134-135 m.y.) near and related to those mineralized at German c;ully suggest a previously unrecognized phase of porphyry copper style mineralization in south-east Queensland of Lower Cretaceous age (Fig. 1).

A practical field method for determining the maximum value of the intrinsic oxidation rate, Smax , of sulfidic materials in waste rock dumps is proposed. Knowledge of the intrinsic oxidation rate of sulfidic materials distributed in a dump is necessary for predictive modelling of oxidation and pollutant generation over time. The suggested method uses the fact that drilling waste rock dumps to install probes for monitoring temperature and oxygen concentration causes large volumes of air to be injected into a dump by the drill rig. By measuring the rate of decrease of oxygen concentration along the length of a borehole immediately after installation, it is proposed that Smax can be calculated at different depths. The aims of this work were: to derive a simple, practical formula for the estimation of Smax from the oxygen concentrations measured over time, based on some simplifying assumptions; to use a two-dimensional numerical model that incorporates all the necessary physical processes to model the behaviour of an aerated dump over time for a reasonable range of dump and material parameters; and to compare the results of the two approaches to assess the validity of the simple formula as a method for estimating Smax. It has been found that the technique can provide reliable estimates of Smax when the value is of the order of 10-7 kg(O2) m-3 s-1 or greater. At the lower end of the range however the radius of the zone aerated during drilling becomes an important parameter and further work has been recommended to investigate this aspect of the method.

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralisation related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The massif contains large chromite bodies of "Alpine-type", ophiolitic affinity. Orebodies reach thicknesses of 150 m and sizes of more than 150 000 000 t chromite ore with average grades of 55-60 wt% Cr2O3. Chromites in the Main ore field are low-Al, high-Cr spinels which exhibit some variation in their Mg-Fe distribution. This differs markedly from high-Al spinels in peridotite host rocks and in narrow chromite pods which occur in the western and northern parts of the massif. Chromites carry silicate inclusions, often hydrous silicates such as amphibole. Chromites in massive chromitites contain micron size inclusions of platinum group minerals (PGM). Composite grains containing two PGM and, occasionally, a hydrous silicate are common. Os-Ir alloys rimmed by PGM sulpharsenides occur in narrow serpentine veinlets that cut chromite and are evidence for the reconcentration of PGE concomitant with introduction of As, probably during serpentinisation. Whole-rock PGE contents are highest in massive chromitites of Diamond Pearl mine (totals of 500 ppb). Chondrite-normalised PGE patterns of chromitites show negative slopes which are typical for ophiolitic, podiform chromitites in mantle sequences. The PGE patterns of host rocks are flat and rather depleted compared with those of chondrites and chromitites. Petrological data from unaltered host peridotites suggest a high temperature overprint leading to sub-solidus re-equilibration of olivine and spinel and to the growth of pargasitic and edenitic amphiboles

A study was made during 1959-60 of reported nelsonite occurrences in Nelson and Amherst Counties, Va. The investigation was limited to core drill- ing on one deposit and beneficiation studies on three deposits. Three diamond-drill holes totaling 562 feet were drilled on the E. M. Hughes property to determine subsurface continuity. Although outcrops as much as 30 feet wide were present on this property, the only nelsonite intersected in the holes ranged from 4 to 18 inches thick. The ilmenite content of the core ranged from 50 to 75 percent. These nelsonite deposits are of secondary importance as a source of titanium, being small, rarely exceeding 1,500 feet in length and 30 feet in width, but they are high grade. Due to the proximity of some of the bodies it might be possible to mine several of them as one operation feeding one mill. Electromagnetic separation on composited samples recovered 83.0 percent of the Tio as an ilmenite concentrate in 68.5 percent of the weight. Two flotation procedures were developed. The first method, using oleic acid as a collector and fluo silicic acid as an apatite depressant on deslimed feed, produced an overall recovery of 59.3 percent in batch tests. The second procedure eliminated desliming. Laurylamine hydrochloride removed silicates in an acid pulp followed by an alkaline apatite flotation with oleic acid as the collector and dextrine as the ilmenite depressant. The ilmenite-rich tailing represented a 66.2-percent recovery of Tio in the batch tests.
