The subject of violent bumps in coal mines has been again brought to attention by a recent succession of such occurrences in the coal mines of the Cumberland field of eastern Kentucky and southern Virginia, which have caused fatalities and injuries to underground employees, a report on which is being issued by the United States Bureau of Mines1. The A.I.M.E. has had two valuable papers on bumps in the No. 2 Mine, Springhill, Nova Scotia, each followed by general discussion on bumps and their causes2. This paper gives a brief review of suggested causes and remedial measures given in English, Canadian and United States reports on blimps in coal mines, and then presents suggestions arising from the writer's recent investigation of the bumps in the Cumberland mines, made at the request of the mine operators, to determine the causes and remedies. These bumps, which occur under the simplest natural conditions, provide better opportunity for analysis of causes and effects than afforded under more complex conditions. The simple conditions in this field consist of relatively thin and level coal beds and uniform roof strata free from folding and faulting. Productivity of mines can be improved by taking fewer, but larger blasts. The initial blasts taken in starting a mining block are restricted by the low amount of void or space to fire into. Block cave mines are using a blasting technique to blast areas that have less than the normally accepted minimum void to establish drawbells for their orebody development. This technique used in block caving mines can be used to improve productivity in mining operations that utilise other mining methods. Some larger blasts have been done in mines, using open stoping methods, which have had void ratios as low as 13 per cent. This has been possible with the use of the explosive gases to transport the broken rock out of the area normally considered to be available to blasts. This trapping of the explosive gases in the broken rock has allowed rock to be moved over 30 m, horizontally, to allow for more void to be available in the blast area. This gives the necessary void ratio allowable to fire larger blasts. This paper will discuss the blasts where this technique has been used in mines to increase the tonnes fired in low void situations. It will also discuss where this type of blasting may improve the productivity of underground mines. Figure 1 shows the how explosive gases have enabled the broken rock to flow out of a draw point without the typical air blast and fly rock that would normally cause a rope suspended sign to be damaged beyond use.

In 1997, 9.2 million tonnes of mined, recoverable copper was produced, of which, 1.8 million tonnes or 19.4% was produced by leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning. The amount of copper produced by this method grew faster than those attained from concentrate smelting, signifying the growing importance of this low-cost production method. Statistical experimental design, unlike traditional approaches, allows for proper distribution of experiments within the boundaries of factors being studied such that the number of experiments required to develop a sound relationship between the factors and a response is minimized. In the past, very little use has been made of statistical experimental design in copper electrowinning studies. Traditional one- variable-at-a-time approaches are widely employed for this purpose. The present study employs a factorial experimental design to relate current efficiency with current density (180 and 300 A/m2), copper concentration (25 and 65 gL), and temperature (40 and 60 °C). Pure synthetic electrolyte with a constant acid concentration of 180 g/L was used throughout the study. The designed study produced a linear relationship where the independent variables of current density, copper concentration, and temperature, and their interactions, were found statistically significant. It was shown that current efficiency could not solely be used as a predictor of copper cathode quality. The quality of the deposit is difficult to be incorporated into a model or relation. It was determined that other measures, such as cathode morphology and crystal structure should be considered. This was done through XRD and SEM analysis.

To determine whether 130 felt earth tremors around Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire U.M, which also experienced severe surface fissuring, were caused by coal extraction, a surface seismometer array was established around Thoresby Colliery. Over the next year, 785 microseismic events were detected. The spatio- temporal seismicity patterns are clearly associated with the commencement, continuing extraction and closure of faces. Of particular note are events which locate at the surface and appear to be related to the active fissuring. Events occur within days of commencement of production and cease when production finishes, with good correlation between face advance and hypocentral position. Naturally occurring microseismic events have also been detected up to 1 km ahead of active longwall faces in the Midlands using triaxial geophone packages grouted into the seam together with a surface seismometer in the top of the borehole. The quality of these data were very high and guided waves can clearly be seen with the dispersive characteristics associated with seam waves. In one experiment more than 2000 events were detected in only two days of monitoring even in a relatively noisy surface environment. This paper demonstrates how very accurate locations (5 10 metres) can be generated using three-component digital data from only one borehole. The surface seismometer and the borehole P-wave onset can give extra precision for the height of the event relative to the seam. The event distributions give a dynamic, three-dimensional image of the developing patterns of fracturing above, below and ahead of the longwall face with important implications for roof control, subsidence prediction and gas Migration.

AN unusual engineering achievement in the Gulf Coast last year was the drilling of a wildcat well in the swamps of Louisiana, using direct current. More unusual was the fact that it was necessary to house a diesel engine and generator on a barge in order to supply power. The remoteness of the well made it necessary to transport living quarters and drilling equipment to the location by means of barges, and involved the digging of a canal from a lake to the location, approximated one mile. The drilling equipment used on this well consisted of two generating units, each having one 210-hp. six-cylinder @$-in. bore type VDMA, 600 r.p.m. diesel engine, direct connected to a type CD-169, 125-kw., 250-volt direct current generator, which in turn is direct connected to a type CD-105, 15-kw. 250-volt exciter. One of these motors operates the draw works, one the mud pump, and one a duplicate spare. The generating equipment on the barge was approximately 250 ft. from the derrick, the control wires being brought from the derrick to the generator barge enclosed in a standard fire hose. This is an original idea for confining the con- 11.01 wires in one cable; obtaining minimum space and ample protection. Both control and power lines were suspended on poles. This well was at Lake Grande Ecaille Dome, which was located by seismograph in 1928. Fig. 1 shows the derrick, power barge and living quarters where direct G. E. current was used with rotary drilling equipment.

The development drilling program of the Copper Cities mine indicated that the molybdenum content of the ore would be about 0.011% MoS2' The molybdenum content of the Miami mine at the same time was about 0.025% MOS2' The Miami mill had a very successful molybdenum operation which used bleeder turbine steam from the Miami power plant for the steaming operation. The much lower grade of the Copper Cities ore, the absence of a source of low cost steam and the use of sodium aerofloat as the copper collector which Miami experience indicated did not respono readily to the steaming technique made very doubtful the success of a similar operation at Copper Cities. However, the relatively few pounds of copper that could be recovered from the low grade Copper Cities heads made very desirable the recovery of the molybdenwa,as a source of additional revenue. Accordingly, shortly after the Copper Cities mill began operation, a research program was instituted to develop a suitable method of molybdenum recovery. This program explored first, the successful steaming process then in use at Miami and as expected, found it unable to decompose the sodium aerofloat copper collector. The known chemical depressants were then tried without much encouragement. Finally the copper concentrate was dried, not roasted, to 2-3% mOisture and this along with sodium ferro-cyanide and cyanide resulted in sufficient copper depression that a final molybdenum concentrate containing 1.0% CU could be made. Previous studies of the Thompson and Temperly ore bodies show alteration aureoles in the Middle Ordovician host-rock limestones, dolomites and shales extending laterally as much as 60m from the ore. Thickness, texture, carbonate and clay mineralogy, major-, minor-, and trace-element contents; and carbonate carbon and carbonate oxygen Isotope compositions of the host rocks all have been significantly altered by hydrothermal processes. Organic geochemical analyses of samples from the basal 8-cm-thick carbonaceous shale bed and immediately overlying limestone bed of the Quimbys Mill Member of the Platteville Formation, collected from within the ore, the alteration aureole, and the unaltered country rock show: 1) solution of carbonates and residual concentration of organic matter, 2) decreases in the volatile (Si) and pyrolytic (S2) hydrocarbon yields In samples of the basal shale from within the ore, 3) decreases in the relative amounts of the lower molecular weight (<nC25) saturated hydrocarbons in samples from the ore, and 4) no changes in either the organic carbon isotope composition or the Rock-Eval or biomarker thermal maturation Indicators. In light of the 125-170°C depositional temperatures documented for the early marmatitic sphalerltes in these deposits by fluid Inclusion studies, the lack of thermal alteration of the organic matter suggests a relatively short mineralization episode, a conclusion supported by the relatively simple sphalerite band stratigraphy. The decreases in the volatile and pyrolytic hydrocarbon yields for shale samples from the ore supports a model for mineral deposition which obtains sulfide through reaction of brine sulfate and indigenous organic matter.

Mineral suspensions show Newtonian flow properties at lower solid concentration, but change into non-Newtonian regime as the solids content is increased. For Newtonian fluids viscosity is independent of shear rate, but for non-Newtonian fluids it varies with rate of shear. Therefore, measurement of viscosity at a shear rate, different from the process will be futile unless the slurry is Newtonian. This is especially true for hydrocyclone operation, where the rate of shear is different at different points within the hydrocyclone. In this case, it is very important to determine the flow type of the suspension before attempting to establish any correlation between viscosity and process efficiency. A new technique to distinguish such changes in flow type has been developed. This involved a co-axial cylinder type viscometer which measured apparent viscosity at a low shear rate, and a vibrating sphere type viscometer which measured the apparent viscosity at a high shear rate. Special precautions were taken to allow measurements of viscosity of rapidly settling mineral suspensions. Because the vibrating sphere viscometer operated at a much higher shear rate than the rotating viscometer, the two instruments together could determine the shear-rate dependency of the viscosity. Ground silica of 80% passing 65~m size in water was used to prepare slurries at concentrations ranging from 1O-70wt% solids. Viscosity of each slurry sample was measured simultaneously by both the viscometers and the results were compared with each other. With this technique, it was found that all the silica slurry samples were in the Newtonian flow regime.

Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in1983 with the formation of De Beers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around 1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geo-survey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. DeBeers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geo-survey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in DeBeers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities are also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydro transport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet-pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Feasibility Studies (FS) were carried out to evaluate the potential use of treated acid mine drainage (AMD) occurring at the Kingsmill Tunnel in the Central Andes of Peru. The 11 km long tunnel drains the underground works of the Morococha Mining District and discharges about 1.25 m3/sec of AMD directly into the Yauli River in the Amazon Basin. The communities living downstream cannot use the Yauli River water due to its low pH and elevated concentrations of metals (eg Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, As, Cd) and sulfate. Studies carried out for this project included technical feasibility, EIA, economic viability and social impact assessment phases. During the æTechnical FeasibilityÆ phase, the treated AMD was produced by simulating a high density sludge (HDS) lime neutralisation/ precipitation process and was evaluated for various potential uses. Mining companies located in Morococha, in particular Centromin Peru SA, and the Water Works Company of the City of Lima (Sedapal) collaborated with Golder Associates during the studies. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) provided the financial assistance. The results of the physical, chemical, biological and toxicological analyses demonstrated that the AMD could be sufficiently treated to be potentially used to supplement the drinking water supply of Lima, and for agricultural (eg irrigation and livestock) and recreational purposes. Process design and scale-up parameters were also determined for implementation of the full-scale treatment facility at the site. The use of the treated AMD as a drinking water supplement would be economically feasible.

"SUMMARYThe J. D. Price property is in Crittenden County, Ky., about 5-1/2 miles west of Marion. The Levias-Crittenden Springs fault system traverses the property. Mines on 3 miles of the same fault system immediately northeast have produced about 250,000 tons of fluorspar ore. The Keystone property, adjacent on the northeast, has produced about 150,000 tons of ore. 3/About 1934, lessees, sank a shaft upon the Price property to a depth of 111.5 feet and crosscut from the bottom of the shaft to the principal fault. No ore was found. Later, in 1942-43, they explored the same fault by core-drilling, but this project also was unsuccessful in finding ore.The author visited the property in September 1944, and subsequently the Bureau further explored the property by core-drilling three holes. No ore was found.ACKNOWLEGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. THE sampling of disseminated copper deposits has been described often but the method of combining assays, to give the true shape and value of the orebody as it will be mined has received less attention. As the ore mined during five or ten years at several of the great disseminated properties has averaged materially lower in grade than the published estimates, the question of the sampling and estimating of these orebodies seems timely. In this paper, attention is given particularly to factors that may cause errors in the final estimate. Sampling of diamond-drill holes, churn-drill holes, and underground workings is briefly described in the first part of the paper; then the method of combining assays to give the average grade and tonnage that will be mined is taken up in some detail. The necessity of study of the geology of the deposit and of probable costs is emphasized. Finally, the methods of calculating tonnages are outlined. DIAMOND-DRILL SAMPLING There are three main requisites for accurate diamond-drill sampling. First, the core should be removed and the hole cleaned out at the beginning of every sampling interval, usually 5 ft. (1.5 m.). After the rods are let down, water should be run through them until it becomes clear. The water must be clear before drilling starts. In this way the material knocked down from the sides of the hole by the descending rods is washed away, instead of being left to salt the sludge, sample.

I. INTRODUCTION THE suggestion has often been made that it would be highly desirable, at least for certain grades of steel, to be able to control more certainly, by pyrometric measurement or otherwise, the temperatures of the operation of the open-hearth and other furnaces used in the manufacture of steel and iron. That the properties of the ingot and finally of the finished steel product are intimately related to the final temperatures attained by-the metal inn the furnace and to the temperature of casting, has been recognized by metallurgists for a long time, and this question has been very thoroughly treated, especially by Prof. Henry M. Howe, and by A. W. and H. Brearley.1 It is the object of this paper to demonstrate that in so war as casting temperatures of furnaces, steel ingots, and similar operations involving the temperatures of streams of iron and steel are concerned, well-known pyrometric methods s may be easily applied-if certain recently determined corrections are made and precautions taken-with a relatively high degree of accuracy. Greater but not insurmountable difficulties will be encountered in. the case of open-hearth furnace temperatures, while for" those of the converter type a ready solution does not seem practicable. It appears that certain essential data have always been lacking in reporting observations such as those of Le Chatelier in 1892. Thus the correction to be applied for the characteristic radiation-or emissivity¬has hitherto not been adequately taken into account nor the limitations of the several possible pyrometric methods clearly recognized.

In 1995 the Marine Minerals Technology Center (MMTC) of the University of Hawaii conducted a sidescan sonar survey and sampling expedition of the submarine geology and hydrothermal systems surrounding the active volcano White Island. The island is located in the Bay of Plenty, within the geothermally active Taupo Volcanic Zone off-shore of the North Island of New Zealand, and is the site of numerous shallow-water hydrothermal systems. The survey system, an EdgeTech DF1000 sonar, was a dual frequency 100 kHz & 500 kHz sonar capable of imaging the seafloor at better than 1 m resolution and possibly detecting gas bubbles within the water column. Sidescan imagery clearly shows sand channels, debris slumps, submarine landslides, and volcanic ridges all around the island to roughly 800 meters offshore. However, analyses of the both raw and processed acoustic data indicate that the sonar was not able to image any of the shallow-water hydrothermal gas seeps known to exist around the island. Vents were located using a commercial fish finder and knowledge from local tour guides and divers. Eleven gas samples from three different sites were collected by divers for analysis of chemical and isotopic composition. Rock samples were collected from thirteen underwater outcrops for correlation with existing data on subarial island flows sampled by previous investigators. Thin sections and XRF analysis were done for each rock to determine mineral assemblages along with major and trace elements, which were used to tie submarine samples to specific subarial stratigraphic layers.

The Pleistocene basanite-tephrite Rothenberg cone complex was built by an alter- nation of strombolian and phreatomagmatic phases of explosive eruption. Two main centres, on a one km long NNE-trending fissure, were active during its construction. The strombolian deposits from three discrete facies corresponding to the crater-fill and inner wall and outer wall environments on the cone. The outer wall facies consists of an alternation of 1. &apos;normal&apos; coarse-grained, relatively well- sorted lapilli and bomb beds, and 2. finer-grained poorly-sorted lapilli beds. Evidence suggests that the former was pro- duced by open-vent lava fountaining, with balanced magma supply and discharge rates, and the latter are the products of eruptions during partial blockage of the vent, by collapse of wall-rock, and formation of a degassed crust on the magma. The resulting explosions there- fore ejected a mixture of fresh actively ves- iculating magma, older partially degassed lava and material recycled from the wall of the cones. The phreatomagmatic deposits are an alternation of moderately-sorted fall beds and thinner ash-rich pyroclastic surge and rain-flushed units. The clast populations are much more diverse than strombolian ones, including abundant wall rock fragments from 0-100 m depth. The juvenile (magmatic) particles range from highly vesicular scoria to dense &apos;bread-crusted&apos; clasts, and contain abundant small wall rock inclusions. The phreatomagmatic phases are products of explosive interaction of small batches of magma with shallow groundwater. Vesiculation of this magma played a small but significant role throughout the fragmentation.

SALT bodies in the form of rolls, horses (sometimes called horsebacks), folds, wants and pinches1 have been encountered while driving entries and mining out rooms during the development of the potash mines in New Mexico. Superficially these sporadic salt occurrences appear to be much alike, but closer examination reveals individual characteristics, and after four years of observation it seems possible to divide them into three general groups that may tentatively be called "depositional," "erosional," and "structural." The data collected are not yet sufficient to permit forecasts of their probable location, so that the annoyance of having to mine salt instead of potash could be avoided or lessened. However, the information so far available appears to throw some light on the occurrence of the sylvinite2 bed now being mined, and it is as a progress report that the writer presents the results of his observations. The mines of the United States Potash Co. and the Potash Company of America are about 20 miles northeast of Carlsbad, in Eddy County, N. M. They are on the southwestern flank of the Permian salt basin, which underlies western Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas, south-central Nebraska, southeastern Colorado and eastern New Mexico. The cuttings from many oil wells and the cores from the potash tests drilled in this basin indicate that this salt series approached its greatest thick-ness (about 4000 ft.) in the southeastern part of New Mexico and the adjoining portions of Texas, and that the most advanced stages of

No symposium on die casting could be complete without consideration of the methods of formula and impurity control. No consideration of control would be complete without discussion of that new tool of the analytical chemist and inspector, the quartz spectrograph. Just as there is an increased appreciation of the possible applications of the die-casting process and of die castings, so too is there, slowly but surely, of the spectrograph. At present the role of the instrument might well be compared with that of brass or magnesium die castings. Neither is as widely understood or known as they will be. Product specifications are increasing and are getting more explicit and often more rigid. The designer, metallurgist and production engineer or superintendent will be forced to depend more and more on the chemical laboratory. Sampling, as well as analyses, testing and inspection problems will grow. The chemical laboratory must meet its increased responsibility and use of the spectrograph will become more common. Advantages of increased precision, greater speed, lessened labor and often lower costs cannot be ignored. It will be the purpose of this paper in part to outline the respective fields of chemical and spectrographic analyses and to indicate where one may overlap the other and in part to indicate certain possible sources of contamination of zinc-base die-cast alloys in particular. INTRODUCTION The Ramsbeck Pb/Zn Mine is located in the northern Sauerland area of West Germany, 150 km N of Frankfurt and 120 km E of Cologne. This is a vein deposit which has been worked from the middle of the 19th century to 1974. About 15 million tons of ore were mined and milled. The ore district contains several vein deposits and is roughly 14 km in length and 4 to 5 km in width. The host rocks are strata of Lower Middle Devonian age. The strata strike 60° to 70° NE and where overturned have a dip steeper than the veins (Fig. 1). The galena-sphalerite mineralization is in quartz veins, which are mineralized where they cut the "Main Ramsbeck Quartzite" horizon, a very competent host rock. Vein structures strike at 65º to 75º, dip about 20° to 25º SE and cut the quartzite at approximately 60 m intervals. The main or "steep veins" within each vein structure dip at 10º to 80° SE with an average of 30° and are offset by thrust faults dipping 5º N to 40° S with an average of 5º S. "Flat veins" usually weakly mineralized occur in the thrust faults between the "steep veins", thus forming the overall step-like vein structure. The mineralization is very irregular and changes a- long strike and down dip. It consists of thin veins of pure sphalerite and galena with quartz and pyrite.
