INTRODUCTION A safe heat stress control strategy for an underground mine has three elements: Application of an environmental measure which reflects physiological strain with sufficient accuracy for the range of conditions encountered underground. Acceptance of a functional relationship between the environ- mental measure and human performance which is used to optimise the environmental conditions achievable with either ventilation or ventilation and refrigeration. A management control strategy based on the environmental measure which is designed to ensure that work in environments where excessive physiological strain may occur is prevented and corrective action is initiated. The environmental measure that reflects physiological strain is the link between the three elements and, since the turn of the century, the discussion of the merits of various indices has been prolific. One problem in selecting a suitable measure or index is the ease with which it can be physically obtained relative to accurately reflecting the physiological strain. For example, wet bulb temperature is simple to measure and, for a particular mining sys- tem, it may adequately represent physiological strain, however, it would not necessarily provide the same relatively safe measure in a different mining system. The acceptance of a measure which can be universally applied has been confounded by both development and predisposition. That is not to say that there is only one "correct" measure and all others are unsuitable. It is self evident that if the application of a particular index has resulted in adequate control, then that mea- sure is correct for that situation. However, an understanding of the limitations is necessary to ensure that adequate control is maintained as mining conditions change. Almost 100 years after the question of heat stress in mines started to be dealt with in a collective manner, an analysis of the available information is leading towards a general strategy to control this problem. In the paper, the developments in heat stress assessment are briefly examined and followed since the earliest published observations on the effect of heat in mines (Haldane, 1905), efforts to determine a relationship between an environmental measure and human performance are reviewed and summarised and the benefits of control strategies such as acclimatisation and shortened shifts are discussed as they relate to Mount Isa Mines. The results of testing the prototype air cooling power instrument are discussed and a heat stress control strategy outlined. HEAT STRESS AND AIR COOLING POWER The operation of the human engine is analogous to other engines where the conversion of chemical energy from the oxidation of fuel to useful mechanical energy is not 100% efficient. In a diesel engine it is about 33% and in a human engine less than 20% resulting in at least five times as much heat produced by the meta- bolic process as useful work done. Metabolic energy production is related to the rate at which oxygen is consumed and is about 340 W for each litre of oxygen per minute. Using measured oxygen consumption and an average body surface area of 2.0 m2, the approximate metabolic energy production associated with different mining tasks is (Morrison et al. 1968):- • Rest, 50 W/m2 • Light work, 75 to 125 W/m2 (machine, LHD or drill jumbo operators) • Medium work, 125 to 175 W/m2 (airleg drilling, light construction work) • Hard work, 175 to 275 W/m2 (barring down, building bulkheads and timbering) • Very hard work, over 275 W/m2 (shovelling rock) Heat balance is achieved when the rate of producing heat (the metabolic heat production rate) is equal to the rate at which the body can reject heat mainly through radiation, convection and evaporation. Heat exchange between the lungs and the air in- haled and exhaled is normally less than 5% of the total and there- fore usually ignored. Any heat not rejected to the surroundings will cause an increase in body core temperature. Since heat stress is related to the balance between the body and the surrounding thermal environment, the main parameters required to be known when determining acceptable conditions are those associated with the heat production and transfer mechanisms. These can be summarised as follows: Metabolic heat production rates (M - W) Skin surface area (A3) (and effects of clothing) Dry bulb temperature (t[ ]) Radiant temperature (t[ ]) Air velocity (V) Air pressure (P) Air vapour pressure (e [ ]) The rate of heat transfer to or from the environment depends on the equilibrium skin temperature t, and the sweat rate S,. These in turn depend on the response of the body to the imposed heat stress and the effect of thermoregulation (Stewart, 1981). Thermoregulation The body contains temperature sensitive structures which send impulses to the brain at a rate depending on the temperature. Both hot and cold signals can be differentiated and the thermoregulatory response ahivated according to which signal pre- dominates. If "cold" signals are dominant, body heat loss is re-

ONLY limited studies have been made of pro-eutectoid a morphology in hypoeutectoid Ti-Cr alloys during previous investigations, 1-3 The nature of the eutectoid reaction, ß?a + TiCr2, has been considered in somewhat more detail.1,2,4,4 Inasmuch as the proeutectoid ferrite reaction in plain carbon steels has recently been extensively investigated in this laboratory, advantage has been taken of the opportunity to compare the morphologies developed in two rather different eutectoid systems in order to permit a preliminary estimate to be made of the degree of generality which may be ascribed to the various results obtained. Experimental Procedure The chemical analyses of the alloys used are given in Table I. The 7.22 pct Cr alloy was prepared by the Battelle Memorial Institute from iodide titanium and high purity chromium. The initial ingot was made by arc melting a master alloy and iodide titanium. The resultant ingot was twice remelted. by the consumable electrode technique. Upset forging at 950°C reduced the final ingot to 3/4 in. sq bars. The 10.94 pct Cr alloy was prepared by the Titanium Metals Corp. of America from sponge titanium and chromium of ordinary purity. This alloy was melted twice by the consumable electrode technique, forged at 1200° to a 3/4 in. sq bar, and rolled at 815°C to a 1/2 in. round. Specimens 1/4 in. x 1/4 in. x 1/16 in. were cut from the 7.22 pct Cr alloy; halves of disks 1/2 in. in dlam and 1/16 in. thick served as specimens of the 10.94 pct Cr alloy. These specimens were individually encapsulated in Vycor, Each capsule was evacuated three times to a pressure of 2 to 6 x lo-' mm Hg and flushed twice with a reduced pressure of argon prior to sealing. The inclusion of two small packets of zirconium chips permitted the capsules to be outgassed and internally gettered, without heating the specimen, prior to heat treatment. The specimens were solution annealed for 40 min at 1000°C, isothermally reacted in deoxidized lead pots, and quenched in iced water. Most of the isothermal reaction treatments were carried out at 25" intervals between 725° and 550°C on specimens of the 7.22 pct Cr alloy and at 650°C on specimens of the 10.94 pct Cr alloy. Results and Discussion Morphologies of Proeutectoid a*—Kinetics of the ß?a Reaction: Fig. 1 shows the TTT-curves for the beginning of the proeutectoid a and the eutectoid reactions in the temperature range investigated in the 7.22 pct Cr alloy. The M, temperature in this alloy is below 0°C. The curve for the beginning of the proeutectoid a reaction is in good agreement with that of Frost, Parris, Hirsch, Doig, and Schwartz' for a 7.54 pct Cr alloy, appears at considerably earlier reaction times than the corresponding curve presented by Rostoker4 for a 7 pct Cr alloy, and lies athwart the curve of Spachner and co-workers11 for an 8 pct Cr alloy. Differences in criteria for the beginning of the a reaction and the relatively high rate of this reaction at lower temperatures presumably account for some of these divergences and may also explain, in part, the apparent failure of an iodide-base 7.22 pct Cr alloy to react more slowly than sponge-base 7 to 8 pct Cr alloys. Grain Boundary Allotriomorphs: Crystals of this morphology nucleate at and grow preferentially and more or less smoothly along the matrix grain boundaries.5-7 Allotriomorphs are the first morphology to precipitate at most grain boundaries at reaction temperatures from 725°C, the highest temperature studied, at least through 575°C. INTRODUCTION In radon dosimetry diffusion chambers with passive [a]-detectors are now in current use to investigate the long-term accumulated indoor exposure of radon and daughters. For the diffusion chamber developed at Karlsruhe the electrochemical etching technique (ECE) was applied to reveal [a]-particles in polycarbonate plastic detectors. Compared to conventional etching, the main advantages of the ECE are the large track diameter, simple track counting in a single field of about 1 cm2, stability of the latent tracks to humidity and temperature and ability for a long-term accumulation up to 1 year. The electrochemical etching system was designed to etch in one run about 101 foils by using a 200 W high voltage generator. The commercial available radon dosimeter system is applied for a country wide program of measuring radon in dwellings. Because of an increasing interest of radon monitoring in mines, environmental monitoring and personnel dosimetry the properties of several track etch detectors have been studied. In the comparative study, Makrofol E, LR 115 and CR 39 were used in the diffusion chamber to investigate the etching techniques, the relative efficiency, the measurable [a]-energy range, and the counting statistic for the measurement of radon concentration. THE KARLSRUHE DIFFUSION CHAMBER The design of the Karlsruhe diffusion chamber is presented in Fig. 1. The upper part of the chamber is closed by a fibreglass filter to separate radon from aerosols, heavy dust particles and radon decay products. Inside the diffusion chamber [a]-particles from radon and daughters are detected by two passive radon detectors, one on the bottom of the chamber and the other in front of the filter. With the fibreglass filter applied the diffusion time is about 1 minute for radon. Therefore, also short-term variations in the radon concentration are recorded by the track detector. Mainly because of the short halflife of thoron (56 s) only about 7 % of the thoron concentration is expected in the diffusion chamber. Radon monitoring provides the estimation of the long-term accumulated mean value of the radon concentration with a lowest detectable concentration of 0.1 pCi/1 after 3 months accumulation by using polycarbonate track etch detectors, an electrochemical etching technique and track counting in a single field of 1 cm2. The diffusion chamber was optimized for the polycarbonate track detector with respect to chamber geometry and detector position [1]. Table 1 presents data for 3 different diffusion chamber designs. The radon sensitivity of the diffusion chamber depends on the [a]-energy discrimination and the angular response of the [a]-track detector. The difference between foil No 2 and foil No 1 can be explained by an additional plate-out effect of radon daughters on foil No 3. The high sensitivity of foil No 3 compared to that of foil No 2 is caused by an increase of the effective volume and the effective area for [a]-particle from radon and from plated-out decay products, respectively. Additional experiments have been performed in order to investigate the electrostatic properties of the plastic material and the properties of the diffusion filter [1]. The properties of bare a-detectors were compared with those inside the diffusion chamber. In contrast to laboratory results, dust particles deposited on the detector surface or in the environment of the detector obviously affect the reproducibility of the bare detector significantly. After 4 months exposure in dwellings the scatter of 10 dosimeters exposed in the same room exceeds a factor of 3 compared to 15 % for the diffusion chamber. COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TRACK ETCH DETECTORS Detector types and evaluation technique In the comparative study the properties of the following plastic track etch detectors have been applied: - LR 115 from Kodak Pathé, France, is a red dyed cellulose nitrate layer of 13 µm thickness on a 100 µm thick polyester support. The holes appears as bright spots in a dark red background. In an optical microscope counting of through etched [a]-tracks which must penetrate the detector layer - CR 39 from Pershore, England, is an ally1 diglycol carbonate plastic of about 300 m thickness. The normal etched [a]-tracks are counted by an optical microscope and the ECE [a]-tracks by a microfiche reader.

"In 2010, closure of the Kidd metallurgical plants along with structural changes to the historical ratios of payable metals led to a review of the operating targets at the Kidd concentrator. Previous operating data indicated that there was potential for significant revenue improvements by lowering the copper concentrate grade. An extended plant trial was carried out in 2011 to quantify the revenue impact of lowering the copper concentrate grade from 27% to 25% Cu, as well as identifying the lower practical grade limit. Analysis of plant trial results indicated that the process change increased net concentrate revenue by $2 M to $3 M per year at current metal prices. Increased revenue was primarily associated with higher silver recovery to the copper concentrate while the marginally improved copper recovery was essentially offset by increased zinc losses and concentrate treatment and freight charges.Details of the plant test work results are discussed in this paper along with the financial analysis of the revenue improvements. Key areas covered are major revenue components of the concentrate contracts, validation of revenue improvements through plant testing and sensitivity of the improvements to market and plant variables.INTRODUCTIONThe Xstrata Copper Kidd concentrator commenced operations in 1966 treating ore from the nearby Kidd volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit in Timmins, Ontario (Thompson, Amsden, & Chapman, 1978). Over the years, up to four separate grinding-flotation divisions were in operation with throughput rates peaking at 4.5 million tonnes per year of ore in the mid 1980’s (Kelebek & Francis, 1998). As the mine production decreased and grinding throughput increased operations were gradually cut back and since 1998 two grinding-flotation divisions have been in operation treating Kidd mine ore. One of the idled divisions has been intermittently used for custom milling operations, most recently the Ni/Cu Montcalm deposit, which was milled from 2004 to 2009. Current budget throughput rates, limited by mine production, are 2.4 million tonnes per year of ore grading 1.7% Cu, 4.3% Zn and 55 g/mt Ag. Concentrate production rates are 150,000 tonnes per year of copper concentrate and 155,000 tonnes per year of zinc concentrate. The Kidd mine is the deepest base metal mine in the world with mining operations down to 9600 ft.In 2010 the copper and zinc plants at the Kidd metallurgical site, which previously treated the concentrate production from the Kidd concentrator, ceased operation due to a variety of economic and market factors. Following the metallurgical plant closures the Kidd concentrator products were shipped off site for treatment. The majority of the copper concentrate is now processed at the Xstrata Copper Horne smelter in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec with the majority of the zinc concentrate processed at Canadian Electrolytic Zinc Ltd. in Valleyfield, Quebec."

THE transportation of solids in pipe lines is a matter of deep concern in many fields of engineering. Much experimental and theoretical work has been done in an effort to devise means of designing pipe lines that will satisfactorily transport given solid loads, but there remain many unanswered questions in this field. The present discussion will be confined to a rather narrow portion of this field and will endeavor to point out certain factors that may well be considered when comparing the relative economy of various installations. The data have been presented previously but a new interpretation was prompted by a suggestion in a paper by Professor O'Brien,1 of the University of California, that the friction work per pound of dry material should be considered in determining the relative efficiency of various installations. This method of considering relative economy in various pipe lines leads to some rather unexpected conclusions, especially with reference to the economy of large pipe sizes. A previous suggestion by the writer3 concerning the economy of a rather peculiar type of installation is strengthened. It is not believed that the considerations set forth herein apply directly in the case of dredge lines, where economy is largely a matter of a high rate of pumping in order to reduce the unit overhead charge. However, it is believed that some value may be gained from these considerations in cases involving the disposal of a fixed amount of solids per unit time with a minimum expenditure of energy and at a low cost for replacement of worn pipes. Such situations are not uncommon in the disposal of mill tailings and the disposal of solids deposited from irrigation waters. It was found that data leading to general conclusions for various pipe sizes were not available but certain definite trends are indicated and methods of analyzing available data are presented in the hope that they may be of assistance in preparing engineering estimates on designs of pipe lines of the type described above. ENERGY. REQUIREMENTS Carrying out the idea contained in Professor O'Brien's paper concerning the method of computing energy required to transport solids, the following analysis leads to some rather interesting conclusions. Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24% of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50% of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing ; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving ; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. Occupational exposure to hand-arm vibration through the use of powered hand tools can result in reductions in tactile sensitivity, grip strength and manual dexterity. In fact, even acute exposures to vibration cause shifts in vibrotactile thresholds in exposed fingers (2,4,5). Although reductions in tactile sensitivity after acute vibration exposures are transient, cellular changes associated with this shift in sensitivity could lead to the more permanent reductions in tactile sensitivity that are a common symptom of hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS). Methods Animals. Male Sprague Dawley rats (6 weeks of age) were used for all experiments. Animals were housed in AAALAC accredited facilities, and all procedures were approved by the NIOSH Animal Care and Use Committee and were in compliance with the CDC guideline for care and use of laboratory animals. Vibration exposures were performed by restraining rats in a Broome-style restrainer, and securing their tails to the vibration platform using 6 mm wide straps that were placed over the tail every 3 cm. Restraint control animals were treated in an identical manner except that the tail platform was set on isolation blocks instead of a shaker. Tail temperature and current perception thresholds (CPTs). Rats were exposed to 4 h of tail vibration (125 Hz, 49 m/s2), or restraint. Tail temperature was collected prior to and immediately following the exposure using an infra-red camera. Sensory neuron function was assessed by measuring CPTs with a Neurometer (Neurotron, Baltimore, MD). Transcutaneous nerve stimulation was applied to the C10 region of the tail. Three frequencies were used to test specific fiber types (5 Hz – C, 250 Hz - Ad, and 2000 Hz – Aß). The intensity of the stimulus was automatically increased in small increments until the rat flicked its tail. Tests at each frequency were repeated until the animals displayed 2 responses that were within 2 CPT (or 0.02 mA) of each other (2-4 tests/animal). CPT tests were performed prior to the exposure, immediately following the exposure, and 24 h after the exposure. Data Analyses. Temperatures were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA with animal as a random variable. ANCOVAS were used to analyze the CPTs at each frequency. Temperature at the time of the CPT test was used as a covariate, and animal was used as a random variable Results Tail temperatures declined between pre and post exposure (F(1,25) = 62.85, p < 0.001; mean ± sem pre 25.96°C ± 0.42, post 20.71°C ± 0.77), but were back to baseline levels by 24 h after the exposure in both groups of rats. The ANCOVAs demonstrated that exposure to a single bout of vibration did not alter sensitivity of C (5Hz) or Ad (250 Hz) fibers to stimulation.

The Institute has established this lectureship to honor the memory of a great American metallurgist, one whose fame has continued long after his passing. As one scientist recently stated it, "All metallurgical texts gradually become outdated and outmoded, except those of the great Henry Marion Howe." It seems fitting, then, that, once every year, we shouId review, in his honor, some aspects of the science in which he was such a distinguished leader, and also discuss any new data that may help to clarify our concepts. It is my privilege, for which indeed I express the deepest appreciation to this Institute, to offer for consideration a few thoughts on the toughness and fracture of hardened steels. Before proceeding to the data, I wish to express my great indebtedness to many associates whose stimulating discussions, generous contributions of data and cooperation in experiments are gratefully acknowledged. (But I wish to absolve them of any blame that may arise from the way in which their discussions and data have been used!) First, Dr. Edgar C. The Institute has established this lectureship to honor the memory of a great American metallurgist, one whose fame has continued long after his passing. As one scientist recently stated it, "All metallurgical texts gradually become outdated and outmoded, except those of the great Henry Marion Howe." It seems fitting, then, that, once every year, we shouId review, in his honor, some aspects of the science in which he was such a distinguished leader, and also discuss any new data that may help to clarify our concepts. It is my privilege, for which indeed I express the deepest appreciation to this Institute, to offer for consideration a few thoughts on the toughness and fracture of hardened steels. Before proceeding to the data, I wish to express my great indebtedness to many associates whose stimulating discussions, generous contributions of data and cooperation in experiments are gratefully acknowledged. (But I wish to absolve them of any blame that may arise from the way in which their discussions and data have been used!) First, Dr. Edgar C. A wastewater treatment plant commissioned in 1978 is undergoing a major expansion. Planning various phases of the 8-hectare expansion at this site requires an understanding of the site response during and after construction, and the potential impact on adjacent properties and infrastructure. The expansion project requires nominally 5 m of site grading fill for flood protection. The site is underlain by loose to compact fine sand over firm to very stiff clay stratum that extends to great depths. Ground improvement is required to mitigate the liquefaction hazard in the fine sand stratum, and preloading is proposed to reduce post- construction settlements in the deep clay. Site development and foundation systems for the plant expansion project were evaluated by conducting settlement analyses which accounted for the historic and future site loading and 3-D modeling of soil layers with interpolation between borehole and cone penetration test (CPT) locations. The numerical model was calibrated to match short-term and long-term settlements measured at the plant site. The analyses were carried out to assess the effects of past loading, proposed preload and surcharge heights, lateral extents and durations as well as vibro-replacement ground improvement on post-construction settlements. Two design options were considered for the preload footprint across the site and foundation system for proposed facilities. It is shown that limiting the preload extent and founding some of the proposed structures on deep friction piles reduce the predicted settlements of adjacent infrastructure and result in reasonable performance for the proposed facilities. INTRODUCTION A wastewater treatment plant commissioned in 1978 will be replaced with a new plant on an undeveloped portion of the site to provide wastewater treatment for an expanded service area. The existing facilities must remain in operation until completion of the new plant. The site grade will be raised nominally 5 m for flood protection. The large areal extent of the site grading fill and plant structures will cause stress changes extending to great depths in the underlying soils and result in settlement of the existing and new structures. Historic settlement of the existing facilities has been tolerable for plant operations, but no settlement performance data was recorded during site development and post-construction from 1978 to 2007. Development of the 8-hectare expansion at this site is planned in three phases to reduce the overall construction schedule. Planning for each phase requires evaluating the effects of various site development activities from start to completion of expansion and during the design life (i.e. post-construction period), and the potential impact on existing wastewater treatment facilities and adjacent properties and infrastructure including an adjacent viaduct structure. Figure 1 presents the site plan and three distinct site development phases considered for the plant expansion.

The Rocklands copper project is a multilode, iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) + cobalt mineralised system located in the Eastern Fold Belt of the Mt Isa Inlier. Rocklands orebodies cover a range of oxidation zones from oxide, to supergene and primary. Each zone contains different economic minerals of interest. The supergene zones contain significant amounts of native copper and the primary zones are dominated by chalcopyrite. The juxtaposition of these oxidation zones and minerals make it an interesting mineralisation system.Current mine production sampling collects a nominal 3 kg drill chip sample from a 1 m composite, RC drilled interval. A site specific sampling procedure was needed to quantify introduced sampling error when taking grade control samples. Due to oxidation and mineralogical variation in ore zones we needed to develop a practically achievable sampling methodology that ensures minimum sample mass and sample error requirements are achieved to ensure ‘representative’ samples for all ore types.These issues are planned to be resolved using an experimentally derived method using principles from the Theory of Sampling. This method uses an experimental calibration of parameters K and a for Gy’s fundamental sampling error formula using a modified 32-piece sampling tree experiment to compile sampling nomograms for the primary and supergene ores. This paper demonstrates the process undertaken to improve the quality and standard of existing mine production sampling procedures at the Rocklands operation.Results indicate a sample mass of 5 kg for RC drill chips is appropriate for both the primary and supergene ores to achieve a fundamental error below 0.01 or 10 per cent relative error, which is slightly higher than the existing sampling protocol of 3 kg. An additional experiment is recommended to compile sampling nomograms using the exact laboratory comminution and mass reduction stage information to assess the use of a 3 kg sample. The results also indicate no changes are required to existing sampling protocols when sampling RC drill chips in primary and supergene ore at Rocklands.Sampling nomogram results also provide a useful ‘rule of thumb’ reference guide to other mining and exploration companies to help understand minimum sample mass requirements and sampling error during exploration drilling, resource evaluation and mining production stages when targeting similar IOCG mineralised systems. A sample mass of 5 kg is recommended when RC drilling similarly IOCG mineralised prospects and deposits in the Cloncurry area. Future test work is recommended when additional open cuts become active as well as including resource drilling drill core to provide better three-dimensional sample representivity.CITATION:Hawtin, M G, 2017. "Initiated in 2008, the project of this 1800 km long Electrical Transmission Line is a job of extreme technical complexity, crossing regions of major forests and rivers. When ready, it will allow the large Brazilian states of Amazonas, Amapá and Pará to use the energy from hydroelectric plants, thus eliminating the need for the use of diesel fuel thermal plants, with their much larger environmental footprint. Due to its extraordinary characteristics, the Green Peace and the Discovery Channel constantly visited the job. The part between the Amazon and the Xingu rivers started in 2012, and encompassed about 100 transmission towers with up to 150 m height, through a region known as “Alagados”. This region exhibits a 1.5 m water level during the rainy season, and soaked ground the rest of the year. Navigation of regular vessels is impossible during the flood season, when a dense vegetation called “bulhado” fills the riverbed, and vehicle traffic is impossible during the dry season, due to the extremely low surface soil resistance. Great logistical and technical difficulties were encountered for driving and determining the capacity of the piles. New systems had to be developed for driving the piles, with the simultaneous use of 15 small piling rigs. The final penetration, total number of hammer blows during driving, plus Dynamic and Static Load Tests were used for determining the driving and acceptance criteria.The geographical challenge and initial conditionsThis paper describes the execution of foundations for a 500 kV Electrical Transmission Line in a region that becomes flooded during the rainy season and heavily muddy during the dry season. This is the monsoon climate, typical of the equatorial region of Brazil, where there is a rainy season lasting for about half the year, followed by a very dry season. The temperature varies very little throughout the year, due to the proximity to the equator. The locals call the rainy season “winter” and the dry season “summer”.The most important part of the so-called “Alagados” region is situated inside an Environmental Extractive Reserve (RESEX) called “Verde para Sempre” (Forever Green), created in 2003. This is one of the largest environmental reserves in Brazil. It is an area controlled by the Brazilian Environmental Control Department, the Chico Mendes Institute (ICMBio). The environment control parameters are very strict.No deep foundation had ever been executed before along the “Alagados” region. The main challenge faced on this job, however, was working in a place where self-propelling vessels or land vehicles and equipment cannot be used. During the rainy season there is a dense and intricate vegetation called “bulhado”, which prevents the movement of outboard motor boats with propellers going deeper than 50 cm. In the dry season, the heavy mud prevents the movement of foundation equipment, excavators, trucks and other machinery."

The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin &amp; Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal.
