"In this study, the recycling conditions of waste liquor obtained after the production of tungsten boride powder from calcium tungstate by self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) and the following hydrochloric acid leaching were investigated in detail. Environmentally unfriendly and extremely acidic (pH~ -0.3) liquor consisting of calcium, magnesium, and boron ions was treated with 1 M sodium carbonate solution to precipitate magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate phases. The obtained amorphous precipitates were heated up to the temperature of 400°C for re-crystallization. As a result, MgO, CaC03 and CaMg(C03)z phases were obtained, while sodium, boron, chlorine ions were remain in the solution. The present study is still in progress.IntroductionSelf-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) is one of the techniques used in the production of a variety of advanced ceramics, inter-metallic, organic and inorganic compounds, oxygen free single crystals, and polymers [ 1, 2]. The reaction becomes selfsustaining and propagates in the reactant mixture, after initiation in SHS process. SHS products may contain the mixture of several unwanted compounds and elements. Therefore following acidic leaching process may be needed to purify the target product. In the previous study, calcium tungstate (Ca W04), magnesium (Mg) and boric acid (B20 3) mixture were reacted to produce tungsten boride powder by SHS process according to the Reaction 1. Then, magnesium and calcium containing byproducts (i.e. MgO, Mg3B206 and Ca3B206) found in the SHS product were leached out by using concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution to obtain pure tungsten boride powder [3].Ca W04 + 0.5B203 + 4.5Mg = WB + 4.5Mg0 + Cao (1)After the leaching, filtrate solution consisting of different amounts of magnesium, calcium, and boron requires additional treatment for the environmentally acceptable disposal.Several works were carried out about magnesium precipitation conditions and kinetics from brines. Rabadzhieva et al. investigated the precipitation of Mg(OH)z from brines by using NaOH as well as caustic soda [ 4]. Turek ve Gnot investigated the precipitation efficiency of Mg(OH)z for the temperature range between 10-40°C, while the reaction was kinetically experimented by Alamdiri et al [5, 6]. Homogeneous precipitation of nesquehonite (MgC03.3H20) by the reaction of MgCli with (NH4)2C03 in supersaturated solutions and factors that influence the precipitation of MgC03.3H20, such as reaction temperature, initial concentration, stirring speed, titration speed, equilibration time, have been studied by Wang et al [7]. The precipitation of Mg(OH)z by calcium hydroxide from aqueous solutions was studied by Baird et al. [8]. Stratful et al. focused on conditions influencing the precipitation of magnesium ammonium phosphate from wastewaters [9]. 1031"

Iodide-grade titanium, two oxygen alloys, and two aluminum alloys were studied by means of creep-rupture tests from 1000° to 2000°F. From the test information an evaluation was made of, 1) the relative creep-rupture strengths of the u (hexagonal-close-packed) and 0 (body-centered-cubic) forms of titanium and some of its alloys; 2) the effects of solid-solution strengthening by oxygen and aluminum on the u and 0 structures; and 3) the extent and effect of atmospheric oxygen alloying on rupture life in tests above about 1000°F. THE use of titanium alloys at temperatures above 1000° F has been considered unlikely by most investigators because of low creep strength (based on a requirement for room-temperature ductility, formability, and weldability) and low oxidation resistance. The results of this testing program do not entirely uphold this pessimism in terms of strength and oxidation resistance. The observations described below are based entirely on stress-rupture results, although some creep tests were also carried out on these alloys. Three items of primary importance are covered: 1) Stress-rupture data in the form of the Larson-Miller parameter curves for several titanium alloys at temperatures up to 2000°F; 2) The relative strengths of the hexagonal-close-packed a structure and the body-centered-cubic 0 structure; 3) The effects of solid-solution alloying on the creep-rupture properties of titaniu'm at elevated temperatures. Only two investigatons have reported the creep- rupture properties of titanium at temperatures above 1000° F. Lunsford and rant' tested iodide titanium; their values are also utilized in the paper. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE After a few tests had been made in a conventional creep-rupture test machine, it became clear that some sort of atmospheric protection would be necessary for short-time tests conducted at temperatures above 1600°F, or for times greater than 100 hr at 1200°F or above. Several furnace units and test machines were constructed, the most successful of which is shown in Fig. 1. Certain experimental difficulties peculiar to titanium were encountered; for example, the use of molybdenum holders was dictated because titanium forms low melting-point eutectics with conventional high-temperature alloys containing appreciable amounts of iron, nickel, or cobalt. This same difficulty made the use of chrome l-alumel thermocouples in direct contact with a test specimen impossible, above about 1500" F. The high-temperature high-vacuum furnace shown in Fig. 1 was capable of maintaining a vacuum of better than 10"5 mm of mercury at 2000°F (pressure measured in cold part of system) and 5 X lo-' mm at room temperature. "By 2015, nearly half the world's population will live in ""water stressed"" areas. Production of fresh water utilizing waste heat from industrial processes has been identified globally as a research priority.About 15% of the electricity required to produce aluminum is lost as waste heat in the off-gas. However, the low temperature (low grade) of the heat limits reuse. The off-gases contain 50-150 ppm SO2 ; tightening regulations coupled with increasing coke sulfur levels are motivating SO2 control, for which seawater scrubbing is attractive for smelters with suitable access.We describe a process that produces fresh water, utilizing the waste heat while scrubbing SO2 . It uses direct contact between seawater and off-gas to humidify the off-gas. The vapor is subsequently condensed. In smelter trials, a unit treating a slip stream produced high quality water in the anticipated quantity, attaining over 95% SO2 scrubbing. Future work involves scaling the process to be economically attractive.BackgroundPopulation growth, coupled with industrialization and urbanization, are increasing demand for water. Water scarcity already affects every continent. Around 1.2 billion people, or almost one-fifth of the world's population, live in areas of water scarcity, and 500 million people are approaching this situation. By 2025, 1.8 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two-thirds of the world's population could be living under water stressed conditions (< 1,700 m3 per person annually) [1]. An assessment by the U.S. General Accounting Office revealed that under normal conditions, by 2013, water managers in 36 states in the USA anticipate water shortages, and that the number might grow to 46 states under drought conditions [2].The obvious choice to alleviate water scarcity is the 97% of available water in the oceans, which is saline and requires desalination for use in biological, agricultural and industrial applications. Technologies developed for desalination include Thermal Distillation, Reverse Osmosis (RO), Electro-Dialysis, and Vacuum Freezing. Distillation and RO are the most commercially prominent. Thermal distillation technologies include Multiple Effect Distillation (MED) and Multi-Stage Flashing (MSF). The report commissioned by the World Bank [3] is one of the many excellent references on desalination technologies. According to the International Desalination Association working paper [4], there were more than 17,348 industrial scale desalination plants installed or contracted by 2004. The total production from these plants is on the order of 8.3 billion imperial gallons per day. RO provides 47.2% of the total capacity. The leading thermal process, MSF, provides 36.5% of the total capacity. Although MSF and RO technologies currently provide the most cost effective means for desalination, their drawback is that they are very energy intensive, and whether or not they remain cost effective strongly depends on energy prices and energy supply."

Boling Dome. a piercement salt dome in the Texas Gulf Coast basin is (was) the single largest deposit of native sulfur in the Western world. Total sulfur production has been over 81.000,000 long tons and the mine is still in production. Data from over 60 years of operation and 8.000+ wells reveal a salt dome rich in history as well as minerals. Sulfur mineralization and production correlate well with caprock structure and morphology. The occurrence of Mississippi Valley-type deposits in fracture zones is notable in some areas and may warrant additional study. DISCOVERY AND PRODUCTION HISTORY Boling Dome is located in the south- east corner of Wharton County, Texas, 60 miles south-west of Houston. It is a piercement type dome in the Houston diapir province. It was discovered in 1922 when the county surveyor noticed sour gas seeps along the San Bernard River (Haynes. 1942). Several companies including Gulf Production Company. Humble, Texas Company, Sun and others quickly began drilling for oil and gas. Traces of native sulfur were reported in cuttings from many wells penetrating the caprock, but the first commercial quantities of sulfur were not found until Gulf Production&apos;s E.M. Chase 3 and 4 wells were drilled in 1927. Texas Gulf Sulphur, then mining sulfur at Gulf Dome in Matagorda County, secured the sulfur rights from Gulf for $3 million in cash and half of the profits after expenses for development and construction of plant and townsite were met (Haynes, 1942). The drilling results from 200 or so Wells revealed a massive deposit destined to become the largest single source of native sulfur in North America. Original reserves were estimated at just over 46 million long tons and were increased in later years. Production by the Frasch method was begun by Union Sulphur in 1928, and continued by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in 1929, and Duval Sulphur Co. and the Baker Williams Co. in 1935. Union produced 8,009 long tons, Duval produced 571,123 long tons, and Baker Williams produced 1,453 long tons. Through its deal with Gulf, Texasgulf acquired the largest and best mineralized portion of the dome and has produced 88,544,466 long tons through 1990, and production is planned for several more years. That amount of sulfur is equivalent to a cube measuring 1,152 feet on each side, or a sulfur highway 1 foot thick, 20 feet wide and 14,479 miles long. Peak production averaged 8,376 ltpd in 1948. A price war between North American sulfur producers and Mexican sulfur producers in 1956, followed by the recession of 1957 and 1958 (Haynes, 1959) coupled with a rapid increase in mining depth to below 700 feet began a gradual production decline that was never reversed (Figures 1 and 2).

"The O'Brien mine is in the west-central part of Cadillac township along the Cadillac 'break', which extends for 7,500 feet from west to east across the property.The ground was staked in 1924 by A. Dumont and W. Hermeston, prospecting for M. J. O'Brien, Limited. The first vein discovered is that now known as No. 1. The No. 4 vein was later exposed on the surface; the other veins known to be present were revealed by underground work and diamond drilling carried out both from the surface and underground.The mine is developed from three vertical shafts: No .. 2 extending from the surface to 2,000 feet; No. 3 from the surface to 1,500 feet; and No. 4 from 2,000 to 3,000 feet. There is on the property a mill of about 200 tons a day capacity, the usual shops, and a townsite housing about forty-five families. Gold production to the end of September, 1944, amounted to 295,824 fine oz. from ore having an average grade of 0.505 oz. a ton. In addition, the mill recovered 3,237 tons of arsenic trioxide having a purity of 83 per cent As2O3.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe four main groups of rocks of the Cadillac area- the Cadillac, Blake River, Kewagama or Pontiac, and Malartic- are found within the boundaries of the property. However, as these rocks have been fully described in · various government reports (1,2,3,4,5,6) and all the known orebodies occur within one group- the Blake River-a detailed description of the geology will be dispensed with here. The known ore deposits lie south of the Cadillac 'break' in a group of rocks that includes 'greenstones', greywackes, conglomerate, porphyries, and a rock of gabbroic composition that may be intrusive. Both flows and tuffs can be recognized in the 'greenstones'. The two bands of porphyry that trend easterly across most of the property have been considered by some observers to be dyke rocks and by others to be flows. Certain evidence points to their being dykes that were intruded as sills considerably prior to the emplacement of the gold-bearing veins, but the possibility of flow origin cannot be fully rejected. North of the talc-chlorite-carbonate schist zone forming the 'break' the rocks are conglomerate and greywacke with iron formation, in which there are no known veins of ore grade. Within the schist zone are minor acid and basic intrusives. The general trend of both bedding and schistosity is a few degrees south of east. The dip is generally vertica1 or steep to the south."

Discussion of the paper of R. P. Burrows, presented `at the New York meeting, February, 1916, and printed in Bulletin No. 107, November, 1915, pp. 2237 to 2245. EDWIN M. CHANCE, Wilkes-Barre, Pa.-I have been very much interested in the comprehensive and able discussion of the important topic of mine lighting just given by Mr. Burrows, especially as I know by common report Mr. Burrows&apos; ability and his close touch with the development of the electric mine lamp, and its use in mines in connection with a portable electric lamp. It is regrettable that Mr: Burrows was not able to acquaint himself more closely with the cost of mine illumination, the actual cost, as produced by a portable light as carried by miners, whether a flame safety lamp or an open light. Had he been able to acquaint himself more closely with these data, he perhaps would not have arrived at some of the conclusions which he has presented to us in his paper. For example, we find Mr. Burrows advises that the open torch is by far the cheapest source of illumination, as produced by a portable light. I am very sure that is not the fact. The cost of miners&apos; oil varies from about 25.c. a gallon to 90b. a gallon. The various States have passed laws from time to time rendering it mandatory that the miner shall use, whether he is willing or not, a so-called better or higher grade of burning oil. These laws have entailed the use of an oil so expensive that the use of the oil torch has become practically impossible, and the acetylene or carbide miners&apos; lamp has largely taken its place. I have evolved a few figures showing the relative efficiency and usefulness of the open oil torch and the acetylene miners&apos; lamp. For example, the acetylene miners&apos; lamp consumes or burns 4 liters of acetylene per hour, or 0.14 cu. ft.; the oxygen consumed is 10 liters, or 0.35 cu. ft. per hour; air consumed, 50 liters, or 1.76 cu. ft. per hour; black-damp produced, 40 liters, or 1.41 cu. ft. per hour; air rendered extinctive to the acetylene flame, 112 liters, or 3.95 cu. ft. per hour; carbide con- sumed, 13 g. per hour. The open oil torch, on the other hand, burns about 20 g. of oil per hour; the oxygen consumed is 48 liters, or 1.69 cu. ft. per. hour; air consumed, 240 liters, or 8.47 cu. ft. per hour; blackdamp produced, 191 liters, or 6.73 cu. ft. per hour; air rendered extinctive to oil flame is 1,413 liters, or 49.92 cu. ft. per hour.

The velocities of the three possible modes of elastic-wave Propagation have been calculated for single-crystal aluminum at 1-deg intervals throughout the standard steveographic triangle. The results are presented as isospeed contours. The deviations between the direction of maximum energy propagation and specirzen axes are presented as arrows drawn within the standard triangle. The orientation factors associated with dislocation nzotion on the primary slip system only and also on all twelve slip systenzs have been calculated for all three elastic waves. The orientation factors associated with a longitudinal standing--7aue resonant specivnen hazle also been calculated. The relevance of these results to ultrasonic attenuation measurements is discussed. DUE to the widespread use of ultrasonics in the investigation of the properties of solids a number of authors15 have discussed in detail the theory of elastic-wave propagation in solids. In this paper the modes of wave propagation are evaluated according to the procedure suggested by reeen&apos; for the case of single-crystal aluminum at 1-deg intervals throughout the standard stereographic triangle. The wave speeds are presented in the form of contour diagrams within the standard triangle. The deviations between the direction of maximum energy propagation and the normals to the wave fronts are presented as arrows drawn within the standard triangle. The orientation-de pendent factors (orientation factors) associated with dislocation damping as derived in the preceding paper6 have been calculated for the case of aluminum at 1-deg intervals throughout the standard triangle. The orientation factors for dislocation motion on the primary slip system only and on all twelve slip systems are presented in the form of contour diagrams, for both the traveling- and the standing-wave conditions. The relevance of these results to ultrasonic attenuation measurements is discussed. ELASTIC-WAVE PROPAGATION Three waves can be propagated in a linear elastic homogeneous anisotropic medium. The connection between short-range order and thermodynamic activities in binary solid solutions has been pointed out by Birchenall1 who calculated approximate values of the energy of interaction of Zn and Cu and of the degree of short-range order in alpha-brass at one composition and two temperatures. The purpose of this note is to call attention to a somewhat more accurate theory than that used by Birchenall and to extend the calculations to a wider range of temperatures and compositions as a means of testing its applicability. This is an example of the well-known general method of comparing measured thermodynamic functions of a system with those calculated from a microscopic model by means of statistical mechanics. In this case, mathematical approximations must be used which make difficult any decision about the validity of the model. Birchenall&apos;s statistical method resembles closely that calletl by Fowler and Guggenheim2 the "quasi-chemical" method which has been shown to lead in certain cases to results identical with those obtained by the method of Bethe.3 The quasi-chemical method has been extended by Takagi4 to give general formulas for the free energy of binary solid solutions based on several lattices at all compositions and temperatures. Specifically, he treats the four systems typified by: I. ß—brass; 2. a— brass; 3. AuCus; 4. AuCu. As already announced in the notice of the 114th (New York) Meeting of the Institute, the ladies present met and organized the Women&apos;s Auxiliary of the Institute. All ladies of the families of members of the Institute-are eligible to this Auxiliary. The purpose and objects of the Auxiliary are well stated in the address of the President, Mrs. S. J. Jennings, in opening the organization meeting on the morning of Feb. 20, 1917. The address follows: "Ladies: Friends from far and near, on behalf of the Women&apos;s Entertainment Committee of the A. I. M. E., I extend to you a hearty welcome. "Most especially are we glad to see our friends from the Pacific Coast and the middle West, .whose royal hospitality to the members of the A. I. M. E. and their wives and daughters on their trips to California and to the Copper Country of the Southwest can never be forgotten. We are glad to be able in some small measure to return it.

It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will he sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

Data from ball mills of a wide range of sizes are analysed using detailed mathematical models and non-linear least squares fitting techniques. In this way model parameters are obtained describing the behaviour of ball mills over a wide range of mill sizes and operating conditions. These parameters define the flow and breakage of each size fraction of ore in the mill. Flow of coarse particles through the mill is found to depend on the proportion of coarse particles present. The breakage rates of coarse particles are found to decrease markedly with mill diameter for mills over 3 m in diameter.Simulation of grinding circuit throughput at constant productsizing for different mill diameters shows that throughput is proportional to theoretical mill power consumption for mills up to about 3 m in diameter. Thereafter the throughput gradually falls below that indicated by power consumption, the decrease becoming quite significant for large diameter mills. Simple qualitative physical arguments are presented to explain this behaviour. The models developed have applications to ball mill scale up. Work on their further development is continuing.

His presentation was illustrated by slides and subject, "Problems of Noise as Applied to Coal Mining." (See Index for printed text of Mr. Zatek&apos;s paper.) Mr. Zatek has been with Mine Safety Appliances Company for the, past 14 years) Prior to going with M.S.A. he was Indus!, trial Hygienist for Pennsylvania Department of Health, a position he held for 10 years He attended the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated with a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. He is a member of Air Pollution Control Association, American Society of Safety Engineers, Instrument Society of America and the American Industrial Hygiene Association. He is certified by the American,&apos; Board of Industrial Hygiene in Compre¬hensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene and also by the Bureau of Mines to be an Instructor in Noise Measurement and Control.

Developed in 1983, high angle conveyors - HAC®s are proven versatile systems for elevating materials continuously from a lower to an upper level. Such systems may also be used to lower materials continuously. HAC®s have found commer­cial application in widely varying materials (including coal, refuse, coarse ores [-250 mm], hot clinker, municipal sludge, wood chips, gypsum, slag, excavated earth, various grains and RDF), at widely varying throughput rates from 0.27 to 4250 t/h. The conveying profiles have varied widely and elevating heights range from 3.66 m to 175 m. HAC®s have found application in coal, copper and iron mining, and preparation, in municipal waste treatment, rapid transit projects, pulp and paper mills, cement plants and in gold mining. While noting a wide variety of applications in general, the present writing focuses on Newmont Gold's HAC®, near Carlin, Nevada, which elevates very coarse gold ore to the screening plant. Additionally, upcoming HAC® applications in gold mining are discussed and a proposed multi-flight vertical HAC® system from a deep underground mine is described.

The recent developments in refractory precious metal ore processing (Bio-oxidation, Autoclaving), and the revitalization of the more traditional roasting processes have attracted great attention in recent years and are indeed the focus of todays symposium. It must always be remembered, however, that the term refractory ore by definition means that the material 'must be capable of being treated at a profit". Given the high cost of the refractory processes, the requirement to be treated at a profit requires very close scrutiny during the evaluation phase of the property development. The M.G.M. film company has the latin motto Ars Gratia Artis meaning Art for Arts Sake. Ingeniatore Gratia Ingeniatoris (a very crude attempt at saying Engineering for Engineerings Sake) should not be the motto for mining companies intent on exploiting refractory gold deposits, but rather the wittily tilted heading for this paper "Take the money and run like a thief". The following hypothetical case studies show that the high technology solution is not always the best financial solution.

Consolidated Rutile Limited (CRL) was one of the best performing mining stocks of the turbulent 1980s, having a very high payout of franked dividends. In contrast to some other mining groups, it was not highly involved in the speculative lead-up to the 1987 sharemarket crash. Its base was firmly laid through a succession of decisions that were taken in the period 1982-1985. These decisions and the rationale behind them are outlined in this paper. CRL began the 1980s in a highly favourable position. It had successfully pioneered the transition to high-throughput mining of the high dunes on North Stradbroke Island (NSI), commissioning its 2100 tph cutter suction dredge at the Bayside reserves in 1978 at the time of rising prices, such that it was able to pay off its modest bank loan within 18 months. The June 1980 results showed a record after-tax profit of $5.6M, from total assets fo $26.5M and sales tonnages of rutile and zircon of around 50,000 tonnes each.
