Western Mining Corporation (WMC), managers of the Windarra Nickel Project, installed a raise-bored haulage shaft and underground crushing system at the Mt Windarra Nickel Mine in 1982. The system is the second of its type installed by WMC, the first being at the Otter Juan Mine in Kambalda in 1976/77. Both haulage systems became necessary as a result of the increasing production limitations, and escalating costs of a deep decline mine.The Windarra haulage system required a single 3 m diameter vertical raise drill hole, 470 m deep and equipped for skip haulage. Two five tonne skips, in balance, hoist crushed ore and mullock to the surface, at a design rate of 200 tonne/hr, effectively reducing truck haulage leads by up to 50 per cent. The system is now fully operational and will enable the mine to achieve its maximum production rate.The raise-bored shaft system has been shown to be cost effective and would be used again in circumstances where raise drilling is applicable.

Many coal beds that will be mined in southeastern Montana are aquifers that provide essential local water supplies. Mine cuts along aquifer outcrops create almost imperceptible piezometric changes. Monitoring near such operations at Colstrip has detected almost no water-level declines in observation wells. Mine cuts between outcrops induce rapid storage depletion and associated piezometric depressions. One such cut near Decker induced 12.50 mj/day of flow from storage and created a piezometric depression of 3 m or more as far as 1500 m from the mine. No wells have yet become nonproductive but losses of some are inevitable as operations expand. Alternative supplies are available from aquifers stratigraphically below the disturbed materials. Effluents from active mines are chemically similar to other area waters because they are mixtures of ground waters entering the mine cuts. Occasional high concentrations of nitrate do occur, however, as residuals from explosives. Spoils generally consist of confined aquifers of wasted coal and coarse rubble at their bases, overlain by finer-grained sand,

On longwall coal faces in some Japanese coal mines more than half of the air coming from the intake gate road flows into the caved goaf and the air heated by the hot waste rocks in the goaf comes out through the latter half of the face. This still constitutes a major heat problem in spite of the introduction of gate and face air coolers. Therefore, in order to establish effective measures to improve the environ- mental conditions, it is essential to obtain information pertaining to the air flow pattern on the face as affected by the goaf conditions and the air flow regulating measures taken at the intake side of the face. Experiments for this purpose were carried out using a coal face model. The model was reduced to a scale of 1110th of the real face measuring 100 m long and 2.2 m high, equipped with self-advancing supports. The model design was also conceived to accomodate eventual modifications of the space of the caved goaf as imposed by the actual conditions.

The Maumee Quarry, located in the city of Maumee, Ohio, has large in-situ cavities, ranging in size from 3 ft (.91 m) in diameter to over 15 ft (4.5 m). The drill/blast team challenge is to drill, load and shoot the geologically disturbed rock in a safe, cost efficient manner, while in close proximity to a commercial area. A continuous improvement process, managed by a Blast Optimization Team (BOT), was implemented to quantify the innovative explosive loading techniques that have been implemented. Borehole camera monitoring, modified loading practices, the need for accurate drill hole logging and open communications between the drill and blast crew proves critical to the success of the operation. Safe Standard Operating Procedures (SSOPs) have been developed and are strictly enforced for the drill/blast cycle. All blasts are monitored with seismographs and recorded on video to provide detailed information as part of the Blast Management Plan. Despite the geological challenges, the measurement of rock fragmentation index versus loader dig rates has provided near optimal crusher throughput.

Larger grinding mills continue to utilize large gear-driven drives or electrical wraparound drives. The panel will include presenters from operations with large mechanical and electrical drives. JIM HANDLEY: Before we get to the third and final session, I want to introduce my co-conspirator for this session, John Mansanti. John is manager of milling with Newrnont Gold Company, Carlin, Nevada, and was very active in securing participation in this innovative symposium. I'm Jim Handley and I'm with Cyprus-Amax Minerals at the Sierrita copper and molybdenum mine. Our third presentation is titled "Geared Up or Wrapped Up?" I hear this topic discussed, but never at great length. I think that's because the opinions are fairly strong and diverse, and people generally aren't reinforced properly in their arguments. The first person to enlighten us on this topic is Scott Bird. He has more than 20 years with Kennecott, is a graduate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Utah, and is currently operations superintendent and deals with this phenomenon every day.

INTRODUCTION The application of oil field technology to large diameter hole drilling is beginning to offer a cost effective alternative to conventional shaft sinking methods. The drilling of ventilation and small production shafts are, of course, not new. The major constraint to the drilling of large diameter production shafts has been the inability to drill holes large enough and straight enough to install and operate relatively high volume hoisting equipment. This paper discusses recent advancements in drilling technology as applied specifically to large diameter holes for use in the mining industry. The paper emphasizes the geotechnical and hydrologic considerations in assessing site conditions and their application to drilled shaft technology. The authors worked together on a recent feasibility study for a 6 m (20 ft.) diameter 975 m (3,200 ft.) drilled shaft in New Mexico. Their individual experience in drilling and geotechnical investigations related to shaft sinking is world wide. The Kundana underground narrow vein gold mine had a recent history of large and damaging seismic events. Following a period of seismic events on 30 July 2001, in which nine miners were temporarily entrapped at depth due to falls of ground in several parts of the decline, the mine operation was required to develop a seismic management system to mitigate seismic risk to the operation. A micro seismic systems and boundary element modelling of mine sequence highlighted large-scale footwall faults and the mining of gold bearing shear veins to be focal structures for seismic energy release between depths of 300 m to the base of mining at 650 m. The integration of seismic data, identification of geological structures and mapping of zones of failed rockmass led to the successful generation of a non linear boundary element model and a seismic hazard strategy. This enabled mine sequences to be assessed daily, monthly and periodically for potential seismic hazards and therefore assigned both economic and personnel risks for the recovery of the ore reserve at the Kundana Underground Operation.
