"The new C Line of the Rome Metro runs northwest to southeast across the city center, with 30 new stations and a total length of more than 15.5 mi (25 km). Due to the presence of a dense urban environment, the selected solution for the construction of the stations consists of a cutand- cover excavation, which is retained by multipropped diaphragm walls to minimize settlement and prevent damage to the nearby structures. The bottom of the excavation of the underground stations are about 82 ft to 98 ft (25 m to 30 m) below ground surface, and about 66 ft to 82 ft (20 m to 25 m) below the groundwater table. To ensure dry conditions and to prevent hydraulic base heave instability, deep well systems were designed and used to lower groundwater level and piezometric head during excavation. The dewatering field tests showed how the local stratigraphy strongly affects the dewatering efficiency. Finite element modeling (FEM) of steady state filtration were used to compare the soil permeability with Lefranc in-situ test results and to verify the efficiency of the grouted plugs. The geological sequence along the new C Line consists of a very heterogeneously layered deposit. The base deposit of stiff overconsolidated clay (“APL,” Pliocene age) is overlain by fluvio-palustrine very dense sandy gravels (“SG,” Pleistocene age), which are then overlain by medium stiff clayey silts or dense sandy silts (“AR” or “ST,” Paleotevere units). These deposits are overlain by covered by pyroclastic volcanic soils, tuff, silty sand and sandy silt (Middle to Upper Pleistocene) deriving from the Colli Albani apparatus. A layer of made ground (“R”) of varying thickness covers the stratigraphic sequence and the natural soil profile everywhere.The local hydrogeological framework is very complex and characterized by a double groundwater system. The upper main aquifer is mainly represented by the “pozzolane sequences” (“PR/PN”), while the lower aquifer consists of a deposit of sandy gravel (“SG,” Pleistocene), which is underlain by marine claystone bedrock (“APL,” Pliocene). The pyroclastic deposits (e.g., pozzolane, lithoid and pseudolithoid tuff and clayely tuff) show large variations in permeability due to porosity, compaction processes, sealing and secondary fracturing. Permeability values for each soil type were determined using Lefranc tests at variable head and using pumping tests. The Lefranc tests indicated a wide range of permeability."

Mining in the state of Western Australia (WA) formally commenced in the 1840s, and over the ensuing 180 years has evolved to be the epicentre of the Australian mining industry and a significant contributor to the national economy. The lithology of WA is replete with mineralisation that hosts uranium and ‘critical minerals’ required for the global renewable energy sector. The state’s first uranium mine is under development, and high levels of activity are occurring in the state’s nascent critical minerals sector, with 168 WA-based companies pursuing rare earth-bearing minerals, 51 of which are actively drilling on their tenements. WA’s mineral deposits typically contain levels of the naturally occurring radionuclides (NORs) thorium-232 and uranium-238 that are elevated above the global crustal average. Workers are exposed to NORs during the mining and mineral extraction processes, and radiation doses that exceed applicable exposure standards may eventuate. The research traces the history of worker radiation doses from 1977 to 2020, finding the maximum dose was 163.4 mSv, more than eight times the current derived annual dose limit. Whilst 93.5 per cent of all workers received doses of less than 5.0 mSv per annum, the potential for elevated doses is ever-present as witnessed by 10.3 mSv reported in 2009/2010. The increase in activity coincides with a revision of the dose coefficients (DCs) associated with the intake of radionuclides. The research evaluates the revised DCs and forecasts doses from inhalation of radioactive dusts will nearly double, and lead to workers receiving doses exceeding 5 mSv for the first time since 2009/2010. The research finds that the current regulatory framework is fit-for-purpose. However, inter-agency relationships, and the capacity of the regulator to effectively regulate the current and future number of mining operations is questioned. The mining industry is vulnerable to capability and capacity constraints – but has failed to respond to issues in relation to competent radiation safety officers first raised by the Winn Inquiry (Winn, Mathews and Tough, 1984). Disconcertingly, monitoring of worker exposures to NORs reached a nadir in 2021, raising questions as to the veracity of worker doses reported to the regulatory agency. The research recommends personal dust sampling be prioritised.

Column flotation is being widely adopted for fine particle treatment by the mineral processing industry due to its simplicity of structure, high efficiency and good separation performance. Cyclonic static micro-bubble column flotation (FCSMC) is an innovative column separation technology that has been successfully applied in the coal preparation industry in China. Recently, the application of this equipment has been further expanded to the separation of several minerals such as fluorite, copper, iron, etc. The bottom of the FCSMC is a cone in which cyclonic field is generated when circulating pump is injected tangentially into the column. The unique cyclonic structure is believed to help enhance the column separation performance. Since the FCSMC is a new flotation device, little work has been done to understand the fundamentals of this technology. In this research, a computational fluid dynamics software, ANSYS/ FLOTRAN, was employed to simulate the flow field of a lab FCSMC system (F0.2 m, F3.0 m by length.) The distribution patterns for velocity field and flow field were investigated under single phase condition. It has been found that axial velocity of the slurry decreases and becomes stable along the height of the column from bottom to top, and the slurry performs as a descending flow pattern. Another observation is the velocity fluctuates vigorously near the wall due to wall effect. Compared to axial velocity, the radial velocity distribution is smaller and more complicated. The basic pattern is that on a given cross section of the column radial velocity increases from the wall to the center and it the velocity changes greatly around the center. Under the condition of column height less than 0.8 m, the axial velocity is negative and it directs from the wall to the column axis. When column height is higher than 0.8 m a reverse pattern is obtained, i.e., axial velocity is positive while directing from column axis to the wall. Special efforts were directed to investigate the tangential velocity pattern. Results indicate that the tangential velocity patterns of different cross sections are similar and showed a symmetrical distribution. Tangential velocity distribution concluded two zones: outer whirlpool and inner whirl-pool. And, interestingly, it has been found that on different cross sections the highest tangential velocity always occurs at the same position of the cross sections.

"Large ‘design and construct’ projects often present significant geotechnical risks. However, these also present significant opportunities for value engineering in design. These opportunities can be realised through systematic site investigation and close collaboration with the Contractor to dovetail the design solutions to suit construction methods. This paper presents a case study of a large infrastructure project in Singapore which involved design optimization of an earth retention system for a deep excavation in a constrained urban environment. The project also required installation of over one thousand bored piles in highly variable ground conditions - identified as a key risk. Systematic site investigation was undertaken to develop a reliable ground model. A detailed value engineering exercise identified opportunities for design optimization by changing the retention systems and construction sequence in some segments. An innovative low cost ground improvement method was used in some areas to reduce the forces on the retention system. An extensive instrumentation and monitoring plan was implemented for verification of design and to mitigate the remaining risks. This paper includes the lessons learnt on this challenging project, which are relevant to a wide range of construction projects.INTRODUCTIONSingapore has been rapidly expanding its underground Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network over the past two decades. The Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) forms part of this expansion and is 43 km long and fully underground comprising 31 stations. This paper describes the value engineering and design optimizations undertaken during detailed design of the earth retaining and support structures (ERSS) for one of the underground stations along TEL. The station, currently under construction, is up to 24m deep and 350m long. The edge of the station excavation is less than 10m away from the existing MRTviaduct. The proposed station is surrounded by high-rise residential and commercial structures, somewithin 2m of the excavation. Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Singapore imposes stringent technical and contractual requirements on MRT construction works to ensure high quality and safety standards. These include minimum requirements for embedment of retaining walls, groundwater control, additional site investigation, instrumentation and monitoring, and compliance to LTA’s Civil Design Criteria (CDC). Any deviations from the minimum requirements can only be approved by LTA after detailed calculations, analysis and field testing are completed and additional monitoring and control measures are proposed."

"Organic carbon blinding is a common, yet often partial, solution to the reduction of preg-robbing. A quantitative method to assess the extent of adsorption of a given blinding agent is presented herein. The adsorption of several blinding reagents on various carbon samples is quantified using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). EIS results showed that kerosene is more strongly adsorbed on carbon than sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), while SLS can hinder the charge transfer process of the oxygen reduction reaction on the carbon surface more effectively. The effectiveness of SLS is pronounced when its concentration is higher than 100 ppm. Raman spectra are presented for selected carbon samples: as the area ratio of the disordered peak to the graphitic peak increases, blinding agent adsorption increases.INTRODUCTION The presence of naturally occurring constituents in gold ores may adversely affect the extraction of gold in cyanide leaching since the gold cyanide complex, Au(CN)2–, can be adsorbed by these constituents (M. Adams & Fleming, 1989; Afenya, 1991; Miller, Wan, & Díaz, 2005). Such ores are known as “preg-robbing”. Preg-robbing behavior may arise from natural carbonaceous materials in the ore (M. Adams & Burger, 1998). In the past decades, a number of pre-treating methods have been developed for refractory carbonaceous ores (Arriagada & Osseo-Asare, 1984; Beer, 1994; Dunne et al., 2007; Jiang, Liu, Xiao, & Yang, 2012; Kohr, 1997; Kulpa & Brierley, 1993; Menne, 1992; Menne & Revy, 1994; Moyes & Houllis, 2010; Petrie, Craw, & Ryan, 2005; Simmons, 1996). The method known as blinding is one of the most effective and economical pre-treatment methods (M. D. Adams & Burger, 1998; Albert, 1923; Darrow, 1924; McQuiston & Shoemaker, 1975; Van den Berg, 2000). Blinding, also referred to as blanking or passivation, uses a chemical reagent to passivate the preg-robbing carbon by selective absorption or wetting (Bas, Altinkaya, Yazici, & Deveci, 2012; Brierley & Kulpa Jr, 1993; Dunne et al., 2012; Van den Berg, 2000; Yang, Qian, Song, & Dong, 2013; Yen, Amankwah, & Choi, 2008; Zhou, Jiang, & Choi, 2014). Organic reagents, which selectively adsorb on the surfaces of activated carbon and “smother” the surface, have been used for blinding carbonaceous matter in gold ores prior to cyanidation. Two comprehensive studies by Abotsi and Osseo-Asare and Adams and Burger have been published on this topic (Abotsi & Osseo-Asare, 1986; M. D. Adams & Burger, 1998)."

A case history of design, prediction, instrumented static load tests on probe piles, installation monitoring, and integrity testing of production piles is presented. Based upon project-specific subsoil conditions, as obtained from several 60 to 80 ft (18.3 to 24.4 m) deep test borings, deep foundation system alternatives included driven concrete and steel pipe piles as well as augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles. High structural loads, site-specific constraints, and the production time frame mandated by the project owner led to the selection of an ACIP pile foundation system that was designed for a pile capacity of 75 tons (667 kN) in compression and 35 tons (309 kN) in tension. Site-specific concerns were raised about the highly porous nature of fragmented and decomposed sandy limestone as well as the high grout intake during construction that could result in increased foundation cost as well as interconnecting of the piles in the rock layer. Consequentially, a multi-phase ACIP pile evaluation program consisting of instrumented compression pile load tests, in conjunction with single-hole ultrasonic pile testing, pile echo testing (sonic testing), as well as full-time production pile monitoring by an experienced geotechnician was specified. As a result of this testing and evaluation program, while grout usage was determined to be within an acceptable range, the instrumented compression load tests yielded data that allowed use of 55 ft (16.8 m) long ACIP piles in lieu of the original plans to use 70 ft (21.3 m) long precast concrete piles. This information was effectively utilized as part of the overall quality control program to install a total of 268, 14 in. (356 mm) diameter ACIP piles within the building footprint to depths of 55 ft (16.8 m) below the pile cut-off elevation as part of the foundation support system. Information recorded during installation included rate of insertion/extraction of the auger, grout pump strokes and pressure, total grout volume, and grout factors, as well as quality and strength of grout. Additionally, many pre-selected installed piles were tested for integrity with a Pile Integrity Sonic Analyzer (PISA) using both sonic and ultrasonic methods. This engineered, monitored, and tested foundation solution provided an effective and quality intensive basis for completion and approval of the foundation work for the building that resulted in cost savings over other foundation alternatives for the owner.

St Helena tunnel is the centrepiece of the Pacific Highway upgrade from Tintenbar to Ewingsdale, abbreviated and commonly known as T2E. At the deepest point the twin tunnels run 45 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill, located about 5 km west of Byron Bay. The tunnel breakthrough was achieved early in 2014 and the works for permanent lining will be completed in early 2015.Once the project will be handed over to the public in 2015, T2E will deliver a safer highway and uninterrupted traffic flow between New South Wales and Queensland. The design speed in the project area has been set to 110 km/h by the client Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), which will reduce the travel times between Brisbane and Ballina to just over two hours.The two tubes of the tunnel have been designed to accommodate three lanes in each direction with shoulders and walkways on either side of the carriageway. These requirements result in a huge cross-section of about 20 m width and an excavated area of about 210 m2.With the tunnel alignment being situated in basaltic rock, St Helena tunnel is conventionally driven. The selected excavation method was predominantly drill-and-blast with temporary support being installed immediately after the excavation. Despite the wide span of the tunnel, the geology allowed the tunnel perimeter to be supported by only rock bolts and a layer of shotcrete over the majority of its length.Due to environmental reasons one of the approval criteria of the project was that the tunnel must not have a detrimental long-term impact on the groundwater system within St Helena Hill. Consequently the tunnel has been designed as a fully tanked structure with a waterproofing sheet membrane installed on the temporary shotcrete.The permanent structure of the tunnel has to meet a 100-year design life and it is designed as a cast in situ concrete lining. Considering the water pressure on the lining the concrete is reinforced with a significant amount of bar reinforcement.The presented paper provides a more detailed explanation of the geology and the consequential temporary and permanent support measures together with the waterproofing system.CITATION:Mueller, A M, 2014. "The use of reverse circulation (RC) drilling for grade control sample collection was selected by the Pueblo Viejo Mine Geology department at the recommencement of the operation in 2010. This method was selected because it allows: for multi-bench drilling (60 m hole depth, four benches of mining) to aid mine planning and provide a detailed close spaced drill data comparison with the reserve model angled drill holes to optimise the drill hole interception of the vertically controlled mineralisation dry sample collection in areas of excessive surface and groundwater mining operations to commence with the long assay return period (due to the need for the samples to be shipped overseas for analysis) until the on-site laboratory is operational.To date, 118 302 m of drilling has been completed throughout the operations of two open pits: Monte Negro and Moore. Two drill rigs (contractor and site-owned and operated) with three generations of sampling systems have been used to date. Throughout the drilling a 20 per cent quality assurance, quality control (QAQC) sample check (blanks, field duplicates and standards) have been used to check the drilling and laboratories performance. In addition, a total of 1104 fines samples were collected to compare the drill chip samples collected and the fines lost with two of the sample systems used.The drilling to date has highlighted the need for a complete and coordinated system to be used before sufficient confidence in the quality of the samples collected is achieved.The complete system must be set-up and coordinated to obtain the best quality sample possible. This complete package includes: drill bit size and shape for the rock being drilled and mineralisation targeted face sampling hammers with the correctly sized hammer shrouds sample hose routing to reduce sample flow turbulence and choking blow-down valves to eliminate drill hole water that has entered the drill string during rod changes correct drilling techniques targeting sample quality a sample system that captures the fines for inclusion into the sample.These improvements can be obtained without reducing the drilling rates.The measurements required to demonstrate the improvement in the sample quality will be the focus of future work within the department.CITATION:Goers, M and Almond, M, 2012. "This study was undertaken in a belt conveyor drift of an underground hard rock mine. The conveyor transported ore or waste from a crushing operation located upwind from the drift sampling locations. A 250 m section of this drift was selected and several types of measurements were taken. Average respirable concentrations in the drift were 0.43 mg/m3 and 0.19 mg/m3 for total and silica dust, respectively. From the respirable dust concentration profile along the drift, it may be possible to estimate the contribution from extended sources such as dust produced by the belt and return idlers.The airborne dust in the drift had an average mass-median aerodynamic diameter of 4.2 micron. A continuous dust monitor showed that the crushing operation produced fairly high dust concentrations (sometimes greater than 4 mg/m3) over short periods of time.IntroductionAirborne dust in the respirable range is known to be the cause of various forms of lung ailments . In underground mines, respirable dust sources are created at many stages of production. All mining operators are responsible for de signing and establishing means of reducing airborne dust. In some cases, sources of dust are well defined and suppression methods are standard.In the case of interest here, the airborne dust cloud was formed from the contribution from many sources, which may be either discrete or extended. At the experimental site, the discrete or point sources were the crushing operation and the belt conveyor transfer point (tail pulley). These sources may be controlled by proper dust capture and scrubbing systems as well as dilution ventilation. Examples of extended dust sources in the area include dust produced by the re-entrainment of settled particles along the drift. Ventilation air movement and vehicular traffic both contribute to this phenomenon. Dust produced by the conveyor is another example of an extended dust source. Caked deposits on the return strand and idlers as well as the transportation of dry material on the belt, can be major contributors. Proper wetting of roadways and muck as well as proper belt cleaning techniques can help reduce these emissions. The cleaning apparatus, used on the belt where these experiments were conducted, is shown in Figure I. These and other belt cleaning techniques are described in more detail elsewhere."

"The mineralogical studies done on Hope Brook ore samples indicated that a heap leach gold recovery process may be possible. In the metallurgicalprogram that followed, column tests confirmed this interpretation. A 9300 tonne demonstration heap leach test, in the late fall of 1985, reaffirmed laboratory results while identifying operating conditions that will have to be addressed in a production heap leach plan. Operating plans, gold recoveries and cost areas will be presented.Another important factor in a successful operation is the environment approach.LocationThe Hope Brook gold deposit is located 5 km inland from Cinq Cerf Bay on the south coast of Newfoundland. Port au x Basques is 80 km west and Burgeo 40 km to the east of Hope Brook. As there are no roads in the area, access to the site is by sea or air (Fig. I). The Hope Brook orebody is near the saddle of three watersheds flowing to Cinq Cerf Brook, Boat Hole Brook and Betty's Pond. Acceptable solutions to several environmental concerns can be obtained by using the relative sensitivities of these watersheds.The terrain at the site is generally rolling to hummocky with numerous small ponds separated with rock outcrops and patches of peat covering. Tree vegetation is sparse except in the sheltered areas around Couteau Bay and Cinq Cerf Brook. GeologyThe Chetwynd deposit is hosted by the Lower to Middle Ordovician Georges Brook Formation of the La Poile Group, a thick sequence of volcanic and sedimentary rocks.The Hope Brook Zone contains the largest concentration of gold found to date at Chetwynd. The zone occurs as an intensely silicified lens 100 m to 550 m long (average 400 m) by up to 60 m in width and forms the eastern portion of a more extensive, 4 km long , alteration zone trending at 053 degrees Az and dipping 70 degrees southeast.The Hope Brook Zone contains massive finely granular quartz, scattered blue quartz eyes, 3070 to 8% pyrite, minor calcopyrite and trace molybdenite. Barren silicification envelopes the gold mineralization. The zone is flanked to the southeast by a 200 metre thick aluminosilicate alteration zone and to the northwest by a 10 metre barren pyritic siliceous fragmental rock . The original lithology may be either a thick felsic pyroclastic sequence or a quartz porphyry sill that has been altered by hydrothermal processes. Silica flooding of the permeable host was accompanied by gold deposition."

The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the lower part of the austenite transformation diagram, or TTT curves, where considerable uncertainty still exists as to the blending of the bainite and martensite reactions. The dissimilarities between these two low temperature transforrnations have been summarized recently by Troiano and Greninger.' Of particular importance to the present work is the fact that martensite formation, unlike bainite formation, is not suppressed by the fastest quenching rates attainable. However, most of the investigations in this direction have been concerned primarily with the start of the martensite transformation (Mg) during cooling, rather than with the quantitative aspects of the subsequent reaction on either further cooling or isothermal holding. Several years ago, Cohen2 suggested a form of transformation diagram which reconciled, at least schematically, the isothermal characteristics of the bainite transformation with the insuppressible nature of the martensite transformation. In essence, the diagram consisted of a family of horizontal lines (representing the progress of the austenite-martensite reaction during quenching) which were interrupted in point of time by the bainite family of C-curves extending down from higher temperatures. This picture received later support by metal-lographic3 and dilatometric4,5 studies, but the techniques employed were not sufficiently critical to substantiate some of the details. Elmendorf6 and Grange and Stewardi have shown that the Greninger-Troiano metallographic technique8 may be used not only for M, determinations, but for studying the course of further austenite decomposition. The purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the lower part of the austenite transformation diagram, or TTT curves, where considerable uncertainty still exists as to the blending of the bainite and martensite reactions. The dissimilarities between these two low temperature transforrnations have been summarized recently by Troiano and Greninger.' Of particular importance to the present work is the fact that martensite formation, unlike bainite formation, is not suppressed by the fastest quenching rates attainable. However, most of the investigations in this direction have been concerned primarily with the start of the martensite transformation (Mg) during cooling, rather than with the quantitative aspects of the subsequent reaction on either further cooling or isothermal holding. Several years ago, Cohen2 suggested a form of transformation diagram which reconciled, at least schematically, the isothermal characteristics of the bainite transformation with the insuppressible nature of the martensite transformation. In essence, the diagram consisted of a family of horizontal lines (representing the progress of the austenite-martensite reaction during quenching) which were interrupted in point of time by the bainite family of C-curves extending down from higher temperatures. This picture received later support by metal-lographic3 and dilatometric4,5 studies, but the techniques employed were not sufficiently critical to substantiate some of the details. Elmendorf6 and Grange and Stewardi have shown that the Greninger-Troiano metallographic technique8 may be used not only for M, determinations, but for studying the course of further austenite decomposition. "The $330 million (U.S.) Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s Yawkey Center for Cancer Care (Yawkey Center) sits in the heart of Boston’s Longwood Medical Area. The Yawkey Center is a cutting-edge cancer care facility that houses Dana-Farber’s adult clinical care and clinical research programs. Standing 14 stories above grade, it includes 7 stories of underground parking extending 75 ft (23 m) below ground. The structure is on a 198 by 186 ft (60 by 57 m) site sandwiched between Dana-Farber’s 13-story Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Research Laboratories Building, the Medical Area Total Energy Plant (MATEP), Jimmy Fund Way, and Brookline Avenue, a busy four lane artery through the heart of the Longwood Medical Area. Together with Simon Design Engineering, the project structural engineer, GEI Consultants designed an innovative foundation and excavation support system to isolate the building from ground vibrations generated by the adjacent MATEP power plant. In effect, the Yawkey Center is a 21-story free-standing structure that starts 7 stories below grade.The MATEP facility provides power for 9 million sq ft (840,000 sq m) of occupied space in the medical area. There are six 32-cylinder diesel engine generators in the facility that produce low-frequency ground vibrations in the 10 Hz range, similar to the natural frequency of typical building elements. The resonant response of the Yawkey Center building structure to these ground vibrations would affect the performance of sensitive medical research equipment and cause an unacceptable environment for clinical care.The soil profile at the site consists of stiff clay, fine sand, glacial till, and bedrock consisting of hard metamorphosed conglomerate. In-situ measurements of ground vibrations performed in boreholes showed that there was little attenuation of the vibrations with depth in the soil layers overlying the bedrock, but the vibration amplitude in the bedrock was markedly lower than in the overlying soil. Based on this data, an innovative foundation system was designed to support the building on bedrock located up to 110 ft (34 m) below ground surface, while isolating it from the surrounding soil. This was done by physically separating the below-grade parking garage floors from the perimeter foundation walls to create a free-standing structure supported on the bedrock"

MUCH has been learned about plastic deformation behavior in crystals through the use of dislocation and slip band etchants. Slip in nickel and nickel-base alloys has previously been revealed by various etching techniques.l-5 The techniques for nickel-base super-alloys4,5 were successful only in the Udimet 700 composition in specific heat-treated conditions. The objective of this work was to develop a more generally applicable slip-band etching procedure. The nominal compositions of the alloys used in this study are listed in Table I. The low carbon Mar-M2OO alloy referred to in the text is the same as listed in Table I with the exception that the carbon content is less than 100 ppm. Mar-M200 and Udimet 700 were solutionized at 2250" and 2150°F, respectively. The aging treatment for both cast alloys was 32 hr at 1600°F and for wrought Udimet 700 was 4 hr at 1975"F, 24 hr at 1550°F, and 16 hr at 1400°F. The new slip-band etching technique consists of a chemical etch followed by a short electropolish, Table 11. Fig. l(a) shows the best result obtained on an internal section of a plastically deformed single crystal of Mar-M2OO when using a conventional slip-band etching procedure which consists of electropolishing followed by etching. Ghostlike traces corresponding to planar slip bands are observed, but the contrast between the bands and the background is weak. Fig. l(b) shows the same field using the new slip-band etching technique. After the etching step of this technique, the same ghostlike traces of Fig. l(a) are observed, but the subsequent electropolishing accentuates the slip bands and the subgrain boundaries while the rest of the matrix is being polished. Longer electropolishing obliterates the slip bands. The new slip-band etching technique makes use of the etchants and electrolytes that are normally used for a given material. Because of this, it should be possible to slip-band etch other nickel-base superal-loys by using existing etchants and electrolytes for a material and following the procedures outlined in the "Comments" section of Table 11. INTRODUCTION The Kiirunavaara iron ore mine is situated in northern Sweden about 150 km north of the Arctic Circle. The ore body has a sheetlike shape, stretches about 4000 m N-S dipping 60°E and has an average width of 85 m. The ore body is known to a depth of more than 1500 m. Mining at present has reached a depth of about 500 m. The mineral is a magnetite containing 66-68% Fe. The ore body was originally mined as an open pit from 1900-1957. From then on the mining method has been sublevel caving. Production for the last few years has been 20-25 million tons /year. Sublevel caving is a mining method with many merits. One of the most valuable is the ability of using a high degree of mechanization. Today, 25 years after sublevel caving was introduced at Kiirunavaara, the advantages of the method have been more or less exhausted, and the disadvantages are more obvious as the rock pressure increases with depth. One of the disadvantages is the high degree of waste rock in the hoisted ore. Today the waste rock content is about 25% by weight of which 20% comes from the caved rock. Second, we are calculating a relatively high loss of ore (20%). Third, selectivity is unsatisfactory when mining different grades of ore. Field testing sublevel shrinkage caving (MSTM) is primarily aimed at lowering the content of waste rock compared to sublevel caving. ECONOMIC TARGET A simple calculation shows that if the waste rock content can be lowered from 25 to 15% the operational costs of mining will be lowered by about 40 million SEK/year (US $9 million) at a production level of 20 million tons/ year. A 15% waste content is the target of the field test. In the long range a decrease in waste rock dilution will mean lower investment costs for deeper levels. DESCRIPTION OF THE MSTM MINING METHOD One reason for decision to carry out the field test was that with MSTM the development drifts from sublevel caving could be utilized and thus the project could start without delay. The only additional development work needed was the loading level. Fig. 2 shows a profile through the MSTM area 66-68% Fe. and Fig. 3 shows the loading level.
