The area (330 sq. miles) shown on the map of the Brocks Creek District (Fig. 1), was mapped by the Northern Territory geological party of the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia. This work was done in two stages:-(i) In 1935, an area of 30 sq. miles around the Golden Dyke mine was mapped by P. S. Hossfeld, Senior Geologist, and A. H. Voisey, Assistant Geologist. The results were described in a detailed report (10).(ii) In 1939, an area of 300 sq. miles in the Brocks Creek district was mapped by C. J. Sullivan (Senior Assistant Geologist), and V. M. Cottle and S. N. Kiek (Assistant Geologists) under the general supervision of P. S. Hossfeld (Senior Geologist).An outline structural map, together with some geological notes was published (1), but that map does not show the amphibolites, and the relationship between ore occurrence and general geology is not emphasised. The publication of the detailed maps and reportwas postponed indefinitely as a result of war. The original mapping was based on air photographs with a scale of approximately 1 in. to 1,200 ft., and all detail which could be shown at that scale was mapped. Features recorded included rock types, details of structure, mineralisation, and surface workings, creeks and soil boundaries. Underground mapping was also carried out. The present map is much simplified from the original, but it is hoped that it shows sufficient information to reveal close relationship between structure, granite, sills of amphibolite and gold occurrence. About 50 per cent. of the area is covered by deep soil or alluvium, and in these portions the geology of the underlying rocks was not determined with accuracy, though in many places strike trends could be deduced from air photographs.Because the A.G. & G.S.N.A. had published the geological notes and map referred to above, and because the publication of the detailed report and maps is still postponed indefinitely, approval has been given by the Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics (which took over the affairs of the A.G. & G.S.N.A. at the termination of its operations) to the preparation of the present paper so that information would be available to the public.The views expressed in this report are those of author. The results of the investigation suggest that in areas where granites are predominantly concordant with bedding, ore deposits may be found at approximately the same stratigraphic horizon. It is thus important to correlate beds even though their relationship may have been obscured by faulting and folding.

"The lateral load capacity is one of the most important issues to be considered in designing piles to resist berthing loads, ship impact forces and for monopiles used in the offshore wind sector. A number of semi-empirical design approaches are available to calculate the ultimate soil resistance and assumed soil reaction profile along the piles’ embedded depth. In order to investigate the response of monopiles to lateral loading, a series of field experiments were conducted on instrumented steel pipe piles. Two lateral loading tests were performed on model piles with a diameter, D, of 340 mm and embedded depth, Lem, of 2.2 m, giving a Lem/D ratio similar to those adopted in the offshore wind sector. The piles were driven into dense sand at the University College Dublin geotechnical test bed site in Ireland. 10 pairs of strain gauges were installed on each model pile along the embedded depth at 10 levels to capture the load transfer and bending moment within the piles. The deflection and rotation at the model pile head were measured by Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) and inclinometers. The tests results were used to perform a detailed evaluation of current design methods. In the final section, discussion on the determination of the ultimate lateral load capacity for monopile design was conducted. IntroductionA pile’s lateral load capacity is determined, for design purposes, by two conditions: 1) the ultimate lateral load, Fu, divided by an appropriate safety factor; and 2) the load according to the maximum lateral deflection that the support structures can sustain. In view of the first condition, design methods to calculate the ultimate load were developed for piles used in the offshore oil and gas sectors, which tend to be much more slender than monopiles used in the wind industry. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether these design methods provide reasonable estimates of ultimate capacity, for short rigid monopiles.The methods to determine the ultimate lateral load generally follow three steps: 1) determine the ultimate soil resistance, Pu, along the pile embedded depth; 2) adopt the most appropriate soil reaction profile, Pz, along the piles embedded depth when the pile subjected to the ultimate lateral load condition (four of the most popular ones are depicted in Figure. 1); and 3) ensure equilibrium of lateral forces (see Equation 1, symbols are listed at the end of the paper) acting on the pile and bending moments (see Equation 2) about a point in pile is employed to determine the ultimate lateral load."

The effect of rain size on the creep behavior of an austenitic iron-base alloy has been studied at 1300° F under conditions of constant stress. The average grain diameter varied between 9 and 190 p (ASTM 10.7-2). The subgrain size and apparent activation energy for creep were not found to depend in any systematic manner on gain size. Grain hozmdary serrations were observed in all specimens tested. The variation of c, with grain size is believed to he associated particularly with grain boundary generation of dislocations which becomes more important with increasing temperatures. SEEMINGLY inconsistent experimental findings have led to a certain amount of confusion concerning the effect of grain size on creep behavior. The confusion is attributed to a lack of test results obtained over sufficiently wide ranges in grain size, stress, and temperature. Experimental results presented in this paper and results available in the literature1-5 show a consistent behavior and lead to a unified concept for the dependence of secondary-or steady-state creep rate on grain size. In accordance with this concept, which is substantiated experimentally, secondary-creep rate should increase with increasing grain diameter at low creep temperatures, leading to greater creep strengths for fine-grained materials. At intermediate temperatures the secondary-creep rate should decrease to a minimum and then increase as the grain size is increased. At high creep temperatures the secondary-creep rate should decrease with increasing grain size, leading to greater creep strengths for coarse-grained materials. Whether a temperature is high or low for creep in a metal or alloy depends primarily on its melting temperature. MATERIAL AND TEST PROCEDURES The material tested was an austenitic iron-base alloy of the following composition (wt pct): C, 0.005; N, 0.017; Mn, 1.26; Ni, 14.21; and Cr, 17.18. Two 15 -lb ingots were forged and hot-rolled to 5/8-in.-diam bars which were then cold-rolled and cold-swaged to a diameter of 0.49 in. These were sectioned into 3-in.-long blanks and heat-treated at various temperatures to obtain different grain sizes. The procedures employed and the results obtained are summarized in Table I. The secondary treatment at 1400° F followed the primary treatment without intermediate cooling to room temperature. This final treatment was employed to minimize various effects arising from heating to different temperatures during the primary treatment, particularly differences in intragranular dislocation structure, segregation of interstitial atoms at grain boundaries, and density of grain boundary ledges. The intragranular dislocation structure was examined by electron transmission metallography after each of the treatments described in Table I. Isolated dislocations and a few tangles were observed but no evidence of subgrains was found after any of the treatments. No grain-size effect was evident on the density and distribution of dislocations. Stabilization of grain boundary structure is particularly important because, as will be discussed later, grain boundaries influence high-temperature creep behavior. "During the mid to late 1960’s, the underground potash industry in Saskatchewan was born. For the next four decades the industry operated at a steady pace supporting a large part of the world demand; until 2008 when the potash market heightened. Operators were motivated to capitalize on this increased demand, new mines were proposed while existing mines were planning upgrades. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) was one of the major producers planning upgrades to their production facilities quickly, including modifying the existing headframe and shaft at the PCS Cory Site to accommodate a new 1500 tonne per hour hoisting plant. Upon completion of the project, the innovative operations group continuously reviewed methods to increase production and reduce operating costs, allowing PCS to continue being competitive on the world market. This paper will describe the design challenges encountered during the development of the infrastructure around an operating facility whilst minimizing down time, schedule, capital and construction costs. This paper will also explore the strategy to increase capacity of the newly commissioned hoisting plant. BACKGROUND Potash production is a major Saskatchewan industry, and has played a significant role in the economy for over 40 years. Production commenced in 1962 when water problems were overcome at the International Minerals and Chemical (IMC) mine near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. A surge of development by other companies resulted in twelve companies opening ten mines by 1970. In 1975 Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan was created by the government of Saskatchewan and shortly thereafter purchased several mines in Saskatchewan, including the Cory Mine (Cory), near Saskatoon. Cory has been in operation since 1968 and is located 12 km (7.5 mi) west of Saskatoon in central Saskatchewan. The mine is located in the center of the world’s largest potash deposit, 1,000 m (3300 feet) below surface. PCS has embarked on sizable capital expansions of more than CDN $7 billion. The Cory CDN $1.6 billion expansion was expected to raise operational capability of the site to 2.7 million tonnes per year, an increase of 1.9 million tonnes per year (MTPY). To achieve 2.7 MTPY of finished product and considering the 22.6% average production recovery1, 12 MTPY of ore must be hoisted to surface for processing. To deliver this rate required upgrading of the hoisting plant to 1500 tonne per hour (TPH). To accomplish this ambitious challenge, creative thinking, careful planning and a cohesive team was needed to work together to ensure the schedule, budget and most importantly the work was completed safely"

"The tensile and shear strength of intrinsic bolting support systems has always been a major concern of designers. A comprehensive laboratory testing program was designed to evaluate the tensile and shear strength of individual wires and completely wound PC-strand cables. PC-strand cables with smooth wires and the recent anchorage enhancement innovation of indentation were evaluated and compared. The testing protocol detailed in ISO Standard 15630 utilizes a mandrel system that was investigated at 3 different diameters which alters the wire to mandrel ratio from 2:1 to 9:1. The results demonstrate that the difference between smooth and indented wires is statistically insignificant when larger diameter mandrels are used, and that indentation does not adversely affect strand properties and performance. Insight into the shearing mechanism and evaluation techniques are discussed with the introduction of triaxial loading to describe the PC-strand tensile and shearing mechanisms. Another important result indicates that the shear strength of PCstrand cable bolting systems has a greater shear strength value than traditional steel bar bolting systems.INTRODUCTIONPC-strand cable bolts have proven to be a global cost effective ground control solution in metal/non-metal and coal mines. The inherent strength to weight ratio of cable supports, combined with flexibility has been used in underground entries that range from 20 to less than 1.2 m in height (65 to 4 ft). In coal mining, the systems are used as primary and secondary support installed both passively or actively with installation tensions that range from 38 to over 178 kN (8,500 to 40,000 lbs) . While cable can be specified in several diameters, the most predominant sizes in the US remain 15.2mm (0.6 in) and 18mm (0.7 in). The capacity of the systems defined in the ASTM 432-13 is 90% of the minimum strand strengths of 260 kN (58,600 lbs) and 320 kN (72,000 lbs), respectively.Cables are not only suitable to support vertical loads, but are also often used to effectively support fractured and jointed materials and can be exposed to shear forces across the wound PC-strand structure. In fact, Goris et al. reported that cable bolts placed across jointed surfaces could more than double the shear resistance. These results were duplicated for both smooth and rough jointed surfaces (Goris et al., 1996). An example of tensioned cable bolts used to support a fractured and sliding roof in a longwall tailgate entry is shown in Figure 1."

THE U-A1 binary system has been studied by Kaufmann and Gordon.&apos; They have shown that three intermetallic compounds occur in the system: UAl², UAl², and a third compound tentatively identified as UA15. UA1³ is simple cubic, a, = 4.26A. Its unit cell contains one formula weight, and it is iso-morphous with AuCu³. UA1² is face-centered cubic, a, = 7.72A, with eight formula weights per unit cell. Rundle and Wilson have shown that it is iso-morphous with Cu²Mg.² A Debye-Scherrer pattern of the Al-rich compound indicated a more complex structure than either UA1² or UA1³. The following is a report of an investigation of the crystal structure of this compound and a determination of its stoi-chiometric formula. A melt of uranium (99.9 pct pure) and aluminum (99.9 pct pure) was prepared which contained about 25 pct U by weight. It was cooled from 950" to 650°C at a rate of 500" per hr and then taken from the furnace and air cooled. An X-ray diffraction pattern of the ingot showed only lines of aluminum and the Al-rich compound. Filings from the ingot were reacted with a solution of sodium hydroxide, producing a fine black powder, the diffraction pattern of which showed no traces of aluminum. A comparison of the Debye-Scherrer pattern of our sample with the data published by Kaufmann and Gordon1 showed that it is identical with the Al-rich phase which they reported. Single crystals were obtained by cooling the melt more slowly (about 50°C per hr). After reaction with sodium hydroxide, the crystals appeared as small black needles attached to the ingot surface. Cell Size, Space Group, and Uranium Positions A series of Weissenberg photographs for rotation about two of the crystallographic axes, taken with copper radiation filtered through nickel foil, revealed an orthorhombic cell of dimensions: a = 4.41 ± 0.02A b = 6.27 ± 0.02A c = 13.71 ± 0.03A Reflections of the type hkl were observed only if: h + k + I = 2n, of the type hkO only if: h = 2n and k = 2n, of the type h01 only if: h + 1 = 2n, and of the type Okl only if: k + 1=2n. Hence, the cell is body-centered with an 001 glide plane. The evidence for the existence of the glide plane is the observed extinction of 23 possible re- flections of the type hkO with at least one index odd. Solvent-in-pulp extraction of uranium from acid leach slurries of flotation concentrates is described. Solvent extraction was carried out in a 10 in. diam pulsed-plate column. The extractant was a 0.1 M tertiary amine (General Mills Alamine 336) in a kerosene diluent containing isodecanol as an emulsion suppressor and third phase inhibitor. In pilot plant operation at the Beaverlodge mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining, Ltd., slurry feeds containing up to 35% solids were processed at a throughput rate of 13.5 tpd of dry feed. Uranium extraction obtained was as high as 98%. Amine losses to the raffinate were approximately 0.07 lb amine per ton of original dry feed. The Beaverlodge Mill of Eldorado Mining and Refining employs a carbonate leach for the extraction of uranium from the ore.&apos;,&apos; Prior to carbonate leaching sulphides are removed by flotation to reduce reagent consumption. This flotation concentrate containing some uranium is then leached with sulfuric acid, filtered, and the uranium precipitated with magnesium hydroxide. The precipitate is then returned to the carbonate leach circuit. Although the tonnage of flotation concentrate treated by acid leaching is low, reagent costs are relatively high. Also maintenance costs on the acid leach filtration circuit were beginning to show significant increases. The choice of solvent extraction-in-pulp as an alternative to the present circuit was influenced by the following factors: 1) elimination of acid pulp filtration, 2) increase in overall recovery because of soluble loss elimination, 3) reduction of reagent cost (mill sodium carbonate solutions are used as strip), and 4) production of higher purity precipitate at the mill site. Because a solvent-in-pulp process would be difficult to test on a bench-scale, the Eldorado experience in the use of pulse columns,3-5 mixer-settlers,6 and solvent-in-pulp operations in particular7 was applied directly to the initial pilot plant carried out during the summer of 1965 and followed by the second pilot plant in 1966. The latter work, which is presented in this paper, determined the following factors for anticipated scale-up to plant production: 1) overall uranium recovery by this process, 2) tonnage throughput expected, and 3) solvent losses anticipated for the full-scale plant. The equipment used consisted of a 10 in. diam extraction pulse column and three mixer-settlers for scrubbing, stripping, and acid equilibration. All equipment was designed by Eldorado and much of the pilot plant was built at the mill site. "The optimum discharging condition to dismantle the batteries without explosion was investigated to recycle the lithium primary batteries, which could be exploded by heating too much or crushing. The 3 waste lithium primary battery cells were discharged with 500 cm3 of 0.5 kmol·m-3 sulfuric acid. Fe concentration and pH increased rapidly after 3 days at 35? and after 1 day at 50?. Chromium concentration increased by 4 days at 35? and 2 day at 50?and then decreased, and nickel concentration was very low. Because Li concentration increased gradually, Li became dissolved after the dissolution of cover material. When the discharged batteries were shredded, the batteries discharged at 50°C were not exploded and those discharged during 3 days at 35°C were exploded. This result shows that the waste batteries could be stabilized within 1 day at 50°C and 4 days at 35°C. Introduction Lithium has some advantages for battery e.g. it is the lightest metals and also has the highest electrochemical potential at 3.04V[1]. For over thirty years lithium primary batteries became famous for their performance in various applications such as IT, medical, and military[2,3]. They gained a reputation for their long shelf life, constant voltage, wide operating temperature range, and low self-discharge characteristics[3-5]. World primary lithium battery market was expected to grow from $820.6 million in 2003 to $1,1355.3 million in 2010 (http://www.frost.com, Frost & Sullivan)[2-4]. The lithium primary batteries have very various sizes and components. Lithium batteries are made with lithium metal as anode active material and non-aqueous solvent as electrolyte. As cathode active material, various kinds of materials were used such as manganese dioxide (nominal voltage, 3.5V), thionyl chloride (3.6V), and carbon monofluoride (3.0V). In Korea, 50 % of the spent lithium primary batteries must be recycled because spent lithium primary batteries have been listed in EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) of the enforcement degree of the act on the promotion of saving and recycling of resources. However, the batteries have been landfilled since there is no economic method to recycle the batteries in Korea[2,3]. When the batteries were heated too much, charged, pierced, over discharged, or short-circuited, the batteries explode because lithium reacts violently with water or air and because contents such as lithium, electrolyte, and sulfur become flammable by high temperature[4]. Therefore, it is so difficult to recycle safely the spent lithium primary batteries."

THE object of this study is to investigate the effect of prior tensile strain on the fracture stress of a metal. This is done in a theoretical manner starting from the point of view developed by the author in his thermodynamic theory of the fracture of metals. The results are compared with experimental findings and a rational interpretation is given to work that shows the variation of fracture stress with prior tensile strain. THEORY OF FRACTURE In the thermodynamic theory of the fracture of metals developed earlier,1 it was shown that a critical strain energy per unit volume exists. This is characteristic of the material and may be calculated from basic thermodynamic data. When the area under the flow curve reaches this characteristic value, fracture occurs. The general criterion for fracture is expressed in the form u ± uo = JLm?AV/V [1] where Lm, is the latent heat of melting of the unit volume, ?V/V is the ratio of the change in volume of the unit volume to the original unit volume on passing from the solid to the liquid state, [uo] is an initial energy density, and J is a conversion factor, which changes energy from heat to mechanical units. As a first approximation, it will be assumed that the stress-strain curve is the straight line that extends from the point of maximum load onward, extrapolated back to the axis of zero strain, for example, line AC of Fig. 1. If the point of intersection of the straight line with the axis of zero strain is represented by so, and the slope of the straight line is p, the analytic form of the flow curve is [s = s + pd [2]] and the strain energy per unit volume evaluated from [JvdS] becomes (vsod + pd2/ 2). When this latter term reaches the critical value JLm?V/V (designated hereafter by M), it is assumed that fracture occurs. This leads to the following expression for the fracture stress: [s1 = \/C r.2 + 2Mp [31] The strain at fracture may be calculated from Eqs 2 and 3. It is assumed in this paper that the initial energy density is either zero or that it may be neglected. Furthermore, the complicated states of stress and of strain existing in the necked region of the tensile specimen after "necking" has occurred will also be neglected for the present, so that average conditions will be assumed to prevail. The North Texas district incorporated in this paper corresponds with the Railroad Commission&apos;s District No. 9, and includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger, and Young.† Table I,Oil and Gas Production in North Texas District, has been changed to conform with the nomenclature of pools designated by the Commission in order to facilitate compilation of the data, since most of the companies operating in the area are coming more and more to recognize one central authority in the matter of naming each new oil pool. No effort is being made to discuss the structural characteristics of the region, since it is generally known by oil men that most of the oil and gas comes from Pennsyl-vanian, with some of less importance from the Mississippian and Ordovician. Development during 1944 There were 1550 wells drilled during 1944, an increase of 450. Of this number, 677 were completed as oil wells, and 11 as gassers. Production increased 1,505,025 bbl., making the year&apos;s total 43,172,005 bbl. of oil having an average gravity of 40". Development generally, however, was somewhat disappointing. The 47 new pools, extensions, or new pay horizons in old fields, had a combined initial production of only 19,146 bbl. It is estimated that these wells added approximately 10,000,000 bbl. to the reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the Caddo conglomerate in the Hildreth pool, Montague County. During the year, 66 wells were completed as the result of three extensions, I to 136 miles west, northwest and north of the field. Young, Archer, and Clay were the most active counties. Eleven new potential - oil fields were developed in Young County, nine in Archer and nine in Clay. Outlook for 1945 In spite of the fact that exploration as a whole was disappointing in 1944, prospects for increased development are bright for 1945. At the close of last year, 2.1 geophysical crews were operating in the district, which, together with the Ohio Oil Company&apos;s No. I W. R. Ross, a wildcat Strawn discovery in King County, 1 1/2 miles beyond the west boundary of district 9, stimulated a lease play extending over four counties. It has been demonstrated that for fine grinding operations, the energy input (E) and the product size modulus (k) are related by an equation of the form E = Ak1-n (1) where "A " and "n" are constants.(1) Also, it was suggested that "A" is determined by the comminuting device and that "n" depends primarily on the rock. It was the purpose of this investigation to study these constants by determining the form of an energy-size reduction relationship over an extreme range of energy inputs, and at the same time, to evaluate the minimum particle size produced during grinding. The comminution system consisted of a stainless steel laboratory ball mill in which quartz was ground at 60% solids for times ranging from 1 minute to 700 hours. The mill which measured 10" diameter by 12" long was loaded with about 60 pounds of balls ranging in diameter from 3/8" to 1-1/8" and was driven at 55 r.p.m. Quartz was selected for the tests because it is a brittle material for which size distribution data were expected to show a constant distribution coefficient regardless of product size.(1) This permitted specification of product size by a size modulus alone. The quantities measured were the time of grind (measure of energy input) and the specific surfaces of the products. Since no accurate method is available yet for determining particle size directly in the very fine size ranges specific surface data were used for this purpose. The relationship between these two quantities may be expressed as where Cis a constant which includes a shape factor, p is the specific gravity of the solid,_S is the specific surface and D is an equivalent particle diameter. For a material in which the distribution coefficient does not change with size the term (l/S) may be substituted for k in equation L if the proportionality constant "A" is changed correspondingly. This substitution was made in this work but in addition, screen analyses were made on several products to verify the equivalence of the two methods of size specification. EXPERIMENTAL DETAIL QUARTZ Quartz from two sources was tested. One series of tests was made on a clear, high purity crystalline quartz from Brazil and Arkansas, and another series was run on massive quartz fromNewHampshire. Grinding charges of the high purity material consisted of 2000 gram samples of -3-8 mesh particles, while the charges of the New Hampshire quartz were 500 gram samples of a -35+48 mesh screen fraction. The difference in the sizes of these two series of charges was not significant in view of the extreme size reduction accomplished, and the New Hampshire samples were smaller to permit ginding to finer sizes in shorter times than required for 2000 gram lots. SAMPLING AND ANALYSIS Separate charges were ground for all tests in which the grinding times were less than one hour and for all tests on New Hampshire quartz since these products were difficult to sample accurately without affecting the entire charge. A study was made of the development of texture and the anisotropy in plastic flow of Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V alloy. Based on Pole figure determinations, the shifting of texture induced by rolling at approximately 400°C was found to be due primarily to slip rotation for the major Portion of the material. Grain boundary shear is believed to be an important factor. The anisotropy of the textured alloy was examined in terms of the variations of yield stress under tension and the ratio of bi -axial strain increments µp, in the temperature range 25" to 290°C. The results were related to Hill&apos;s theory on plastic anisotropy. The Schmid factors of (1100)[1120], (1101)[1120/, and (1101)[1120] slip systems were analyzed and found to be compatible with the observed anisotropy. Cross-slip between these planes was proposed as a possible deformation mode. In a number of published articles, considerable interest has been directed to the possible achievement of texture hardening in hcp metals. Following Backofen, Hosford, and Burke,&apos; this phenomenon was related to the yield criteria of the material and was expressed in terms of the biaxial strain ratio, r = d?w/d?l. The higher the value of r, the greater is the expected potential for texture hardening under certain loading conditions. For a given material, r varies with direction. Such variation can be traced to the anisotropy in plastic flow and can be explained within the framework of the various modes of deformation. Hatch2 found that a high r value coincides with a texture whereby the (0001) pole is closely aligned with the surface normal for sheet materials, Based on the analysis of the slip on the {1010}, {1011}, and (0001) planes, Lee and Backofen3 and Avery, Hosford, and Backofen4 concluded that the resistance to thinning is reduced by the operation of the (0001) <1120> slip system; with this reasoning they were able to explain the low r values (i.e., r « 1) observed in magnesium alloy sheets in the rolling direction and in commercially pure titanium in the transverse direction. The general equation, dealing with plastic flow in a polycrystalline aggregate has been used to correlate the plastic anisotropy and texture. In this expression, T and s are shear and normal stresses, and dri and d? are shear and normal strain increments, respectively. Assuming that five slip systems are operative within each grain and applying the principle of maximum work,5,6 one can determine the m value among the available systems. On this basis, Hosford7 and Chin, Nesbitt, and Williams&apos; were able to correlate m with yield stress under plane-strain compression, and Svensson9 was able to predict the variation of yield stress in textured aluminum. These workers made their analyses from materials in which slip operation is known to be associated with plastic flow. Questions remain regarding the derivation of Hill&apos;s theory on plastic anisotropy,10,11 since it was formulated on von Mises&apos; yield criterion.&apos;&apos; Its ability to deal with other forms of deformation has been in doubt.13 Others have discussed the validity of Hill&apos;s quadratic equation relating strain and yield stress.14&apos;15 For hcp titanium, deformation by various modes of slip and twinning operations has been reported.16-20 If all possible modes of deformation operate and contribute substantially to the plastic flow, it is difficult to imagine how the quadratic expression can suitably describe the anisotropic plastic flow of titanium alloys. Backofen and Hosford15 considered that Hill&apos;s is a macroscopic theory and implied that the major mode of deformation by slip mechanism will adequately describe anisotropy of the material. In the present investigation, slip operation will be shown to play the major role in the development of sheet texture induced by rolling of a commercial titanium alloy. Although twinning and other modes of deformation may also operate, their operation is believed to be secondary. The anisotropic properties of the sheet, which can be expressed in terms of directional variation of r, µp = -d?w/d?l and the yield stress will be shown to be governed primarily by slip operation. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES The titanium alloy chosen for the present investigation had a nominal composition of 8 wt pct Al, 1 wt pct Mo, 1 wt pct V, and 0.1 wt pct interstitial impurities. Sheets varying between 0.1 and 0.15 in. thickness were used. The alloy was received in a condition which was prepared by rolling at 900°C and annealing at 700°C. Subsequently, the sheets were subjected to further reduction in thickness by rolling at 400°C. A total reduction in thickness of 65 to 70 pct was obtained by a series of quick passes in a rolling mill with intermediate reheating. Further reduction in thickness was not possible due to cracking developed at the edges of the sheets. X-ray measurements were conducted in a Siemens and a Norelco unit to determine the texture of the sheets. Reflection techniques were used exclusively with CuK, radiation and a nickel filter. The loss of X-ray intensity due to geometric defocusing was calibrated with a technique described previously." During longwall mining in the Bowen Basin, open tension cracks formed by overburden subsidence occur to a height of about 175 m above the mining horizon. Within this zone, water in aquifers or inundated workings will flow into the mine.At the Oaky Creek mines Aquila seam, open cut pits containing pit water overlie German Creek seam longwall panels at a height of about 105 m. The highly saline water is classified as contaminated and cannot be discharged off-site. Because alternative water storage facilities were not available, innovative water management solutions were needed to allow longwall mining to proceed without underground flooding.Computer modelling and underground inflow measurements have been completed to accurately determine inflow rates into longwall mines from overlying water sources at increasing overburden heights. Research work has also included determining cost-effective blanket treatment of final voids and reshaping spoil piles to minimise downward seepage.Ponded water overlying the Aquila low, Grasstree south and A6 pits required remedial works prior to longwall undermining to prevent flooding. In the Aquila low pit it was necessary to partition the pit and remove water overlying longwall 32. Two in-pit bridges were constructed by dozing and track compacting low wall spoil. The final void above the longwall panel was kept dry during undermining. Maximum recorded underground inflow rate was 30.0 L/s.The Grasstree south pit final void, part of the ramp and much of the spoil piles were inundated prior to undermining of 308 panel. A bridge and blanket were required to prevent ponding above the longwall. Maximum recorded inflow during undermining was 23.2 L/s.The pit A6 south final void, which contained dumped, saturated rejects and inundated highwall mining entries was undermined by longwall 36 at the Oaky No 1 underground mine. Because mapping of highwall entries was not available, the maximum calculated inflow rate of 73.0 L/s was based on all design entries being fully inundated. The actual inflow rate during longwall mining ranged up to 20.0 L/s.Water management improvements that have been implemented include greater use of contaminated pit water to wash coal, use of evaporation fans, and installation of a 6 ML/day reverse osmosis plant for water purification.CITATION:Klenowski, G and Winter, S, 2017. Remote methane detection State and federal regulations require frequent measurements to verify that safe methane levels are maintained in underground coal mines. Ventilation control is the primary means of maintaining safe methane levels. In the immediate face area, where the highest methane levels occur, methane measurements are required every 20 minutes during active mining. To perform these measurements, temporary roof supports must be erected. This allows a miner to reach the face. There a hand-held methanometer is used to make the measurements. This procedure is time consuming and potentially hazardous. To facilitate the measuring process and reduce the miner&apos;s exposure to roof falls, the US Bureau of Mines has developed a prototype optical device. It can measure methane remotely from distances up to 12 m (40 ft). The device uses two infrared signals, reflected from the coal face, rib, or roof. One signal is absorbed by the methane, the other is not. The ratio of the two signals determines the average methane concentration in the face area. The prototype detector has also been successfully tested at the Lake Lynn, PA Laboratory. Instantaneous responses were obtained for methane in the ventilation airflow and for methane layered near the roof. Conventional methanometers required from five to 25 seconds to respond to the methane in the ventilation airflow. They did not respond to methane in the roof layer. Ignition suppression system The incidence has increased of fractional spark ignition at the mine face. One reason is the advent of mechanical mining. Another is the more difficult ventilation conditions associated with deeper and more extensive underground workings. To cope with the problem of frictional ignition, the Bureau of Mines initiated research to develop a system that would provide rapid detection of incipient methane-air ignition. Then, rapid dispersion of a quenching agent would ensure that the methane flame was extinguished while it was still relatively small. This concept was successfully demonstrated by suppressing explosions in the Bureau&apos;s Bruceton, PA experimental mine. But the bulkiness of the early storage-dispersal system proved impractical to retrofit onto face equipment. In a cooperative effort by the Bureau and the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a more compact system has been developed and is being tested. Hence about 24 no. of (Borehole) Boring and Drilling up to depth of 55 m from existing ground level has been carried out. Additionally, 09 nos. of Static Cone Penetration Test (SCPT), 02 Nos. of Dynamic Cone Penetration Test (DCPT), 02 Nos. of Pressure meter test (PMT), 02 nos. of Cyclic Plate load test (CPLT) of suitable capacity with 06 nos. of Seismic Cross Hole Test (SCHT) in boreholes had been carried out. The purpose of PMT and SCHT was to have clear idea about the Seismic behavior - knowhow of site. According to Basic principles of Soil Mechanics and foundation design, it is proved that PMT & SCHT are dynamic test. These tests stimulate field condition of occurrences of earthquake. In later stages of analysis, it is found that site have high probability of liquefaction through use of Geologismiki – Liquefaction Analysis Software.
