The Toulon Tunnel project is a key component of the highway corridor on the French Riviera between Marseille and Nice and is a fundamental transportation infrastructure for the region. The first design studies started in the 1960s. The tunnel project is comprised of two separate tunnels: south and north. The north tunnel was built between 1992 and 2002 after 10 years of difficult construction. On March 15, 1996, for example, a collapse of the tunnel in the Marchand area generated a sinkhole in the city center, causing a 20-month delay. The south tunnel alignment runs parallel to the north tunnel below Toulon?s historical downtown at a depth of 20 to 40 m (65 to 131 ft) with some areas with less than 10 m (32 ft) of cover. The risk management program was studied to be a state of the art program in urban tunneling construction.

This paper presents a case study in West Malaysia for passive piles failure in very soft marine clay in open excavation. In this particular case, the thickness of the very soft marine clay ranges from 5 m to 7 m (16 ft to 23 ft) from the ground surface. Preliminary site investigation reported SPT ?N? value of zero for the very soft marine clay. The design was based on a deep foundation utilizing driven piles to support the superstructure. During pile cap construction, the piles were subjected to uncontrolled open excavation, inducing bending moment in the piles, resulting in some cracked and broken piles. Analyses were carried out using an existing three-dimensional finite element code with a non-linear soil model to predict the response of these piles during excavation. Finally, the predictions of pile responses during excavation were compared satisfactorily with the observed results.

The Ilo Refinery was commissioned in 1975, with a cathode production capacity of 150,000 tpy. In 1994, Southern Perú Copper Corporation (SPCC) purchased the Refinery from Minero Perú SA. Subsequently, in November 1999, Grupo Mexico acquired control of Southern Perú. The anode production facility is located at the Ilo Refinery. A number of effective operating and quality control practices have been developed that have improved anode quality, as well as increasing anode production capacity to 350,000 tpy. These, and other optimization actions have allowed for a current density increase from 213 A/m2 to 275 A/m2, while maintaining current efficiency at 98% and sustaining the high quality of the cathode. The paper will outline the scope of operational practices in the Anode Plant and provide some discussion on the Ilo Smelter modernization project, and the resulting impact on the existing anode plant.

With construction underway on the 22.5 km (14 mile) Initial Segment of the Link Light Rail transit system in Seattle (including the one-mile EPB-driven running tunnels and mined station at Beacon Hill), the Sound Transit Board on May 20, 2004 voted on selection of a preferred route for an approximately eight-mile extension northwards from the central business district to Northgate, and authorized immediate start of advanced conceptual/preliminary engineering and geotechnical exploration programs scheduled to be completed in Spring 2005. The extension includes approximately914 m (30,000) route-feet of bored running tunnels, a mined station with platform level approximately 60 m (200 ft) below grade, three (possibly four) cut-and-cover stations and a cut-and-cover cross-over structure, as well as an aerial terminal station at Northgate and other line-section below-grade and aerial structures. All tunneling will be in glacial soils.

Cook Colliery currently mines in the Argo Seam, beneath old workings in an overlying seam. The Argo seam is up to 4.8 m thick and a continuous haulage system behind an ABM25 is used to develop first workings. Current partial secondary extraction utilises floor stripping and pocketing or sumping first working pillars on retreat. The following paper summarises this recent secondary extraction experience, particularly from a geotechnical perspective, but also considering production and ventilation issues. Outcomes and learnings are presented for mining in this challenging and close multi-seam environment. The sealed castor seam workings are within 20 m, and vary from unmined areas to large first working pillars, to partial extraction panels and full extraction panels. High stress remnant pillars and goaf-edges are notable mining considerations. The mining environment is further complicated by faulting, thrust zones and weak laminated roof.

The Dy deposit is a 21 Mt Pb-Zn-Ag-Au SEDEX-type massive sulphide resource located in the Anvil District, Faro, Yukon. This relatively unexplored orebody lies at a depth of 480 to 920m below surface, dips 20 to 35o and comprises vertical ore thicknesses of 3 to 28m at a 9% Pb + Zn cut-off grade. The deposit has been tested at depth with 63 surface diamond drillholes, but has not yet been explored or developed by underground means. Over the past decade, pre-feasibility investigations were conducted for two separate owners of the property to determine the economic viability of developing an underground mine at Dy. Following these previous studies an assessment was undertaken between 1998 and 2000 to further investigate geotechnical considerations for underground mining. The results and conclusions drawn from this study provide direction for possible future exploration at Dy.

The backfill system at Cleveland Potash?s Boulby Mine places waste filter cake underground in the form of a high concentration slurry in worked out areas of the mine reducing the mine?s environmental impact. The backfill system delivers slurry approximately 1100 m down the mine and up to 11 000 m horizontally underground. The Boulby backfill system is unique in that the placed backfill waste is not used for the usual purposes such as support, pillar extraction or reducing ventilation requirements. It was specifically implemented for environmental reasons. This influenced the design and resulted in some unique features of the system. A previous paper (Wilkins et al., 2004) described the design and commissioning of the backfill system. This paper describes the operational experience with the backfill system and backfill placement since commissioning in May 2003 and looks at lessons that can be applied in other backfill designs.

In support of the development of its Liberian iron ore project, ArcelorMittal Mining Research and Development (AM Mining R&D) has performed characterisation and beneficiation test work on drill core samples received from the proposed mine area. In addition to this, a sinter feed product was composed by blending and processing the drill cores in order to predict sintering performance of the ore. This article presents the methodology used to prepare the drill core blend for characterisation, as well as describe the sinter pot trial. Dynamic load testing is employed with ever increasing frequency to estimate the strength and elastic settlement behavior of piles of all types. For dynamic loading ram masses up to 20 Mg have been used and pile resistance forces up to 30 MN have been activated. Strains and accelerations induced by the impact are measured near the pile top and a load-set curve is computed by the so-called CAPWAP method. This paper briefly describes both the necessary equipment and other details of the dynamic tests and the available analytical tools for data interpretation. Furthermore the need for further research and the current status of standardization will be discussed. This paper also presents the results from several static and dynamic correlation tests on cast-in-situ piles of up to 2 m diameter and 64 m length. The results demonstrate the economical and technical feasibility of this test method.

Ceremonies for the induction of five mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame are scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004 at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, NV. The 17th Annual Mining Hall of Fame Induction banquet will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The five inductees are Georgius Agricola, David William Brunton, Herbert E. Goodman, David Ray Mitchell and Robert Peele. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555) wrote De ReMetallica, an original and valuable work that discussed everything known about mining during the first half of the 16th century. In De Re Metallica, Agricola reviewed practical means of finding ores, methods of surveying and mining, the assaying of ores, types and uses of mining machinery, smelting, mine administration and more. The offshore Maui gas/condensate field was discovered by Shell BP and Todd on Services Limited in 1969. Subsequent appraisal drilling and negotiations with the Government led to a development agreement, æThe Maui White Paper' being concluded in 1973. Part of this agreement provided for the Government to take a 50 per cent shareholding in the field. The field is comprised of a double domed anticlinal structure containing two gas reservoirs at depths ranging from 2700 - 3000 m. Water depth is 110 m. The development plan called for two standalone steel platforms to be installed sequentially over a period of some years depending on gas demand. The first platform (MPA) was put in place in 1976 but difficulties were experienced with piling and drilling of the 12 (later increased to 14) wells did not start until 1978. First gas was piped ashore late in 1979.

The Bureau of Mines formulated a method for calculating the concentration of entrained dust from a dust deposit by a turbulent gas stream. In particular, a diffusion equation is used to calculate dust concentrations in a channel following an explosion. Dust leaving the channel walls was treated as originating from stationary or moving, and single or multiple material sources. Formulas and sample computations for various types of dust sources in circular and rectangular channels are given, based on experimental entrainment rates. The analysis predicts the dust concentration as a function of time and channel space. The results appear to agree with the physical characteristics of explosion-driven dust dispersion in a O.6-m-diameter, 50-m-long explosion tunnel. The analysis is also applied to simultaneous and consecutive dispersion of coal and rock dust from simulated coal mine surfaces (walls, floor, roof, and ribs).

From the Brightwater Conveyance System in Seattle to the Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel in Vancouver, BC, the design and construction of deep-lying tunnels in the Pacific Northwest often require the incorporation of deep portal shafts. Alluvium overlying marine and glacial deposits combined with the high regional seismicity is the common geologic setting. The latest example illustrating the development of shaft design for this scenario is the 40-m-deep shafts of the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant New Outfall System. The main components of the shafts include the initial lining, providing the excavation support system to be used for launching and receiving a 5-m-diameter TBM; and the final lining, designed to withstand all static and seismic loads and to remain viable for the intended design life. This paper presents design and construction considerations for these shafts against the background of and lessons learned from past project experiences.

Hydrometallurgical oxidation of sulphides is capital and energy intensive, with autoclave and bio-technology competing for lowest overall cost status. The use of surface aerators instead of stirred tank reactors could provide lower costs for bio-oxidation of concentrates. With this in mind, the Delft Inclined Plate reactor was designed with inclined plates above a settler shaped reactor to continuously return slurry from the lowest point in the settler to the surface of the liquid. The multiplate superstructure overcomes the scale-up restriction of the standard circular surface aeration patterns. DIP aerator energy and volume requirements for oxygen transfer from air will be presented in terms of kg O2/kWh and kg O2/m3/h transferred as a function of wt % sand in the slurry and compared to stirred tank performance. Scale up from the 4 m3 pilot unit will be discussed.

Optimal estimation theory has been applied to the problem of estimating process variables during vacuum arc remelting (V AR), a process widely used in the specialty metals industry to cast large ingots of segregation sensitive and/or reactive metal alloys. Four state variables were used to develop a simple state-space model of the V AR process: electrode gap (G), electrode mass (M), electrode position (X) and electrode melting rate (R). The optimal estimator consists of a Kalman filter that incorporates the model and uses electrode feed rate and measurement based estimates of G, M and X to produce optimal estimates of all four state variables. Simulations show that the filter provides estimates that have error variances between one and three orders-of-magnitude less than estimates based solely on measurements. Examples are presented that verify this for electrode gap, an extremely important control parameter for the process.

A busca por pesquisas que provem soluções e inovações que utilizam parte de tais resíduos vem ganhando grande destaque. O poli (tereftalato de etileno) é um polímero termoplástico, e é o material base para produção de embalagens plásticas que são comercializadas mundialmente. Sabe-se que é de grande volume os resíduos sólidos provenientes de tais embalagens plásticas. Com o objetivo de solucionar um problema ambiental e verificar a viabilidade técnica, foram fabricados em proporções de 0%, 5%, 10% e 15% m/m, materiais compósitos de base cimentícias reforçados com fibras de poli (tereftalato de etileno) provenientes de resíduos de garrafas plásticas (PET), posteriormente amostras passaram por caracterizações mecânicas. Destacou-se um aumento das resistências a compressão axial e diametral do material produzido com fabricação de adição de poli(tereftalato de etileno). Tais resultados referente a resistência foram positivos, propondo assim a utilização do polímero na composição de novos compósitos.

The general types of industrial behaviour of liberated valuable sulfide minerals in the 0 - 10 ¦m size fraction are described and tests to explore on site at a concentrator the general nature of any deficient behaviour are discussed. In addition, the general types of behaviour of the gangue minerals in this size fraction are also described in terms of their mechanisms for recovery. These behaviours are also discussed in terms of the type of grinding device and grinding environment in which they were produced and the target grinding product size. Major recent improvements in the industrial capabilities of grinding devices are discussed.Present difficulties in characterisation of particles in the 0 - 10 ¦m range are described and desirable improvements for the future are outlined. Further, desirable improvements for industrial processing of valuable minerals in this size range are discussed along with some remedial actions.

Magnetic field has a great effect on the crystallization behavior of mold flux and properties of the flux film between mold and strand, on which the surface quality of strand was deeply depended in continuous casting process. Therefore, studying the change law of the crystallization properties of mold flux in magnetic field is of great significant. In the present work, based on intensity of the applied magnetic field with the range from 0mT to 60mT, the crystallization ratio, crystal size and mineralogical phases of the flux film were discussed. The results show that crystallization ratio increases with the increasing magnetic field intensity, and the crystal size becomes bigger at the same time. The magnetic field promotes the crystallization ratio and growth speed of the crystallized grains of mold flux. However, magnetic field doesn’t change types of the mineralogical phases.

In the course of a study of the formation of external deposits on tubes in water-tube boilers it became desirable to determine the sulfur dioxide (SO2) and sulfur trioxide (SO3) in the Due gases. Determinations made by the A.S.M.E. method for SO2 and SO3 in gaseous products of combustion did not give accurate results. It was found that minute quantities of copper, present in the flue gases from the coal in use, caused oxidation of sulfite in the absorption bottle and that the carbon dioxide (CO2) in the flue gases caused high values for SO2. The A.S.M.E. test procedure was revised to prevent oxidation of sulfite in the absorption bottle and to allow for the effect of CO2; subsequent analyses of flue gases produced reliable results. The revised procedure is described.

This paper, describing the mining methods and practice at No. 2 mine of the American Zino Co. of Tennessee at Mascot, Tenn., is one of a series of papers issued by the Bureau of Mines presenting the mining methods and costs in various districts throughout the United States. Its purpose is to summarize methods recently put into practice whereby increased efficiency has been effected. These improvements have to do principally with mill-hole mining, slushing, contract labor, and bonuses. In general, this paper supplements earlier articles and brings them up to date.
