Substantial schedule advantages can be made on projects if cross-passage construction can occur at the same time as tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation with little or no impact on TBM logistics. However, this approach can prove difficult to achieve with many of the more cost-effective means of supporting the segmental lining during cross-passage break-out. This paper discusses the constraints and shortcomings of conventional approaches, and describes how a cost-effective solution involving a shotcrete shell and opening constructed inside the segmental lining was designed and constructed to deliver cost and time savings on Seattle University Link contract U220.The paper explains the spatial and schedule constraints on the TBM tunnelling and cross-passage construction, and how a shotcrete solution was arrived at in preference to traditional approaches. As the solution was novel the design had to be robust, and the paper explains how this was achieved through a combination of 3D finite element modelling and closed form solutions. Following a description of the trials to verify that the structure could be demolished post-cross-passage completion, the paper describes how the shell solution was constructed, used and demolished safely to leave the lining surface in a clean and undamaged state fit for tunnel operation.CITATION:Harding, A, Chappell, M, Burdick, M and Krulc, M, 2014. The Tarnagulla Gold Project in Central Victoria, Australia, was developed and operated by Reef Mining NL between 1994 and early 2000, producing 53 000 ounces of gold from the Nick OÆTime Shoot, a single narrow vein shoot structure within part of the larger Poverty Reef, with a strike length ranging from 30 m to 60 m. The ore shoot was developed over a vertical interval of 190 m, using a small cross-section decline and small, mechanised equipment. Various stoping methods were employed including mechanised cut-and-fill with a single boom jumbo, hand-held mining using airleg drills and rope scrapers, and small uphole retreat stopes using a line of sight remote operated LHD to recover a crown pillar. Experience during stoping showed that airleg drilling and rope scrapers gave much better dilution control than diesel equipment. Innovations included a low-cost hydraulic fill system. Due to the small scale of the deposit, the feasibility studies, planning and permitting for the mine were based on very limited drilling information; however, the mine was brought into production within two years of the discovery. While the mine made an operating profit, it failed to fully repay capital at the low gold price then prevailing. Applying the lessons learned from the operation to optimise the access and stoping method, the project is re-examined at todayÆs gold price and operating costs. Central Victoria has the potential to host many similar small deposits. The authors were respectively Non-Executive Director and Resident Manager for Reef Mining NL when the mine was operating.

In recent years, Chinese companies have invested billions in Australian mineral exploration, development and processing. In 2008 - 2009 alone, the Foreign Investment Review Board approved $26.4 B of investment. Much of this investment has been by merger and acquisition (M&A) of Australian resources companies. This paper sets out to investigate how Australian CEOs perceive the cultural and institutional challenges in operating Australia mining companies recently acquired by Chinese interests. HofstedeÆs cultural dimensions and institutional theory from management science were used to develop a structured questionnaire, which was subsequently used to conduct telephone interview of the CEOs of six recently acquired mining companies. Analysis of the survey results indicated that, in all cases, few changes were made to the operational management of the Australian companies post-M&A. The three major benefits for Australian companies as a result of the M&A are the ability to; access long-term debt at lower cost; secure finance for growth plans in financially volatile times; and maintain existing management structures. Some perceived negatives involved longer and more convoluted decision-making as a result of Chinese state approval required for investment decisions. The study identified building æGuanxiÆ and an aversion to losing æfaceÆ as important cultural learnings for Australian CEOs. The Palaeozoic rocks of north-eastern Laos are an attractive target for gold explorers due to the complex tectonic history and lack of past exploration in the region. Alluvial workings along the Nam Xiang River and its tributaries have highlighted the potential for gold mineralisation in the Vieng Kham region. The Nam Xiang River follows a regionally-extensive NNE-striking thrust fault. Adjacent to the Nam Xiang fault, the dip of the main foliation steepens, and in many places the stratigraphy is overturned as a result of this faulting.United Minerals and Mining Company conducted a regional exploration program to explore for gold. This included stream sediment and rock-chip sampling, and airborne geophysics. Geochemical anomalies were followed up with more detailed exploration, including geological mapping and soil sampling. Despite the relatively deep weathering profile, gold mineralisation is associated with a low-level but well-defined gold-in-soil anomaly. Drilling has shown that gold mineralisation occurs on structures and fabrics parallel to the main Nam Xiang fault. The highest gold grades are associated with brecciated sandstones that have experienced strong carbonate alteration. This suggests that late-stage structures such as the Nam Xiang fault are the major control on gold mineralisation in the region.CITATION:Greentree, M, Cunningham, M J M and Liu, J H, 2015. Sub-level stoping with consolidated rockfill is the main method for mining steep dipping baryte and fluorite veins in Germany. Drifting is fully mechanised using drill jumbos, LHD units and shotcrete support. Stopes have heights up to 50 m with sub-level distances up to 15 m. Winning of the pillars between sub-levels is done by longhole blasting in slices of 3-5 m length on strike. Mucking is done on the lowermost level by LHD units. After each blast rockfill with binder (cement and/or fly ash) is dumped into the scope from the uppermost level. Economic success depends on both geological and technical parameters and factors, eg vein thickness and dip, ore grade, size and distance of sub-level drifts. Of particular influence are ore loss in pillar winning and dilution both in drifting on vein and in pillar mining. A comprehensive computer program has been developed for calculating the total cost per tonne run-of-mine ore respectively per tonne of concentrate for a single stope. The cost model includes development, longhole blasting, mucking and haulage to the mill, milling and ventilation. All costs (labour, energy, supplies, maintenance, depreciation and capital cost) are taken into account. Dilution and recovery are both considered. The program can be used to estimate the cost of mining a particular stope. It can also be used to investigate the influence of relevant parameters and factors on the economic result. By this way it should be possible to optimise the technical design of a stope.

Currently, in several caving operations, the spacing between the drawpoints is determined by consulting Laubscher's design guide (Laubscher 1994, 2000), a methodology based on the gravity flow characteristics of the caved rock. Laubscher's methodology is based upon the height of interaction between adjacent flow zones, but does not allow calculation of primary recovery for a given layout. In this paper the authors present a technical and economic methodology based on the flow that occurs near the drawpoint and the associated development costs to estimate the optimal spacing. The flow model at the drawpoint was validated at the El Teniente mine, which extracts coarse caved rock. To validate the flow model, small-scale simulations using drawpoint clusters were conducted and results compared to extracted grades, marker recovery, and drill holes to determine ore remnants that are part of the production control programme at the mine. The results indicate that primary recovery depends on the height of interaction, which varies with the friction angle of the caved rock and the spacing between adjacent drawpoints. Primary recovery estimations indicate values from 85 per cent to 97 per cent depending on the drawpoint spacing used. Extrapolations were then conducted to estimate the primary recovery for different drawpoint configurations planned to be used in the New Mine Level of the mine. The results indicate that the optimal drawpoint spacing is 32 m x 20 m with a through length of 18 m. The methodology developed may be used to estimate optimal drawpoint spacing for block caving mines under different metal prices and mine cost conditions.

Beach sand minerals from the volcanic rock structures of the Drakensberg, Kwazulu-Natal, (South Africa) have been processed. Screening, flotation, spiral concentration and magnetic separation methods were used either separately or successively in an attempt to concentrate monazite minerals. Products thereof and those from a long time (up to 72 hours) microwaves treatment of the finally produced ilmenite-bearing minerals have been studied using the M÷ssbauer effect spectroscopy. The 57Fe M÷ssbauer effect spectroscopy has demonstrated its versatility and power in monitoring the ilmenite internal reduction mechanism and products and, in characterising the iron-bearing phases contained in different products from the beach sand minerals processing. Microwaves heating of ilmenite for up to 38 hours reduced internally the Fe3+ from the ilmeniteÆs structure. A more prolonged microwaves heating (up to 72 hours) re-oxidised the mineral. 61 per cent natural ilmenite recovery was obtained in the floating products of a spiral concentrated -212+106 ¦m screened and beach sand minerals fraction. A preferential concentration of hematite with a 62 per cent recovery was found in the sinking products while the combination of screening-spiral separation-magnetic separation and flotation yielded a floating product with the highest ilmenite and the highest hematite abundanceÆs (71 per cent, 19 per cent respectively). A natural ilmenite containing 87 per cent ilmenite and 13 per cent hematite could be produced and extracted from the sinking products of the flotation process collected subsequently to the spiral concentration and the initial screening.

"The in pit dam construction and utilities relocation, known as the East Mine Corridor Relocation (EMCR) project, was developed to extend the life of the east side of the Base Mine pit by two veal's. This will result in the recovery of an additional 80 million barrels of oil and delay expenditures associated with the opening of the North Mine by two years. To accomplish this, a large in pit earth structure was required to provide a new embankment foundation for relocating a public highway, four powerlines, a natural gas back-up pipeline, a substation, and a conveyor train. This structure would also he required as a temporary dam 10 contain mature fine tails on the west side until mining is completed in the east mine corridor area, that will then be filled with fluid.The in pit dam, known as The Highway Berm, is 2.5 km long, 63 m high and has 42 million m3 of engineered soil added to the already existing end-dumped soil volumes. To complete the design and construction of a structure of this magnitude, in the very short time frame of two-and-a-half years, presented many new challenges. The main challenges faced were: designing while construction was ongoing; designing without the use of clay cores or sand filters; using relatively non-select overburden material; proper dewatering and base preparation; changing from construction of 50 m high spoil piles to a high specification construction operation; compacting lifts with heavy haulers; constructing during the winter; and monitoring movement of the structure with satellites."

Hydromagnesite (Mg5(CO3).(OH)2.4H20), one of the sedimentary deposits in Salda Lake Basin, is developed under the control of active tectonics regime. Since the occurrence and deposition mechanism of hydromagnesite are unstable under atmospheric conditions, in order to evaluate the precipitation process, systematic host rock, lake water (surface, 20m, 40m, 60m) and hydromagnesite sampling were carried out. Macro, micro, XRD and chemical investigations were done in detail. Not only the results and formation and crystallization mechanism but also hydromagnesite's St values were evaluated. Main resources could be ultramaficmafic surrounding rocks for hydromagnesite formations. However, hydromagnesite development is considered in different phases, because it has showed various characteristics in Kayadibi and Köpekcayin areas. In Kayadibi area Huntide-Dolomite-Aragonite-Hydromagnesite paragenesis has been realized. Hydromagnesite has also formed in Köpekcayiri area, large amount of hyrdomagnesite occurrences and levels various are noticeable. Actual position of hydromagresite levels exhibits tectonic influences in and around the lake. Therefore, the levels seems to exhibit secondary formation properties. In addition, the formations are being still maintained sedimentation as products of a peripheral deposition phases. Resolving and redifferentiation sedimentation processes probably improve in periods of lake water chemistry especially Ca/Mg proportional changes, and also SI variations indicate the mentioned precipitation mechanism. Similarly, side and into the lake hydromagnesite is stored different levels and ultramafics-mafics rocks fallow indicated stages. It is postulated that hydromagnesite formation, which is existed by result of determined developments and multiphase sedimentation, could be originated from probable crack zones on the lake bottom.

Tensile data indicate that over the range of strain rates 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1 and in the temperature range 298° to 743°K the flow stress at a given temperature may be expressed as: C0 = Cem where m changes abruptly at a critical strain rate of 10-2 sec-1. The Zener-Hollomon parameter was tested and found to be invalid except at temperatures exceeding 700° K. Values of AH calculated for temperatures above 700°K ranged from 30 to 47.5 kcal per g-mole. ThE flow characteristics of aluminum and aluminum alloys as a function of temperature and strain rate have been of interest to various experimenters for many years. Trozera et al.1 determined tensile flow curves for pure aluminum and concluded that the combined effect of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress could be related using the Zener-Hollomon parameter. More recently, Hockett2 proposed a relationship between compressive flow stress, temperature, and true strain rate which could be represented by a surface. Holt et al.3 studied strain rate effects on flow stress in a number of aluminum alloys at room temperature. It was determined that there is a critical strain rate above which a strain rate effect is observed. It was also reported that the strain rate sensitivity was significant in aluminum alloys in the "0" condition only. In a recent review paper McQueen4 has considered a number of mathematical expressions which have been used to describe the relationship between stress, strain rate, and temperature. These expressions have been applied to the flow characteristics of a number of different metals and alloys including aluminum. In the present work the strain rate sensitivity of 7075-0 aluminum was determined in the temperature range of 298° to 743°K. The tensile flow stress at 0.2 pct offset was obtained over a nominal strain rate range of 10-5 to 10-1 sec-1. EXPERIMENTAL Threaded tensile specimens were cut from a single heat of 7075-T6 aluminum. The composition of this heat is given in Table I. The test bars had a gage section 1.5 in. long by 0.250 in. diam and conformed to ASTM specification E-8-57T. After machining, the bars were annealed at 413° ± 10°C for 2 hr. They were then cooled to 260°C in 3 hr, and finally air cooled to room temperature. This treatment is commonly used to produce the "0" condition. Load-time curves at constant crosshead speeds were obtained at various temperatures using an Instron testing machine. Crosshead speeds ranged from 0.002 to 40 in. per min. A three-zone resistance tube furnace was used for the elevated-temperature tests. Temperatures were measured at three points along the gage length by means of suitably placed thermocouples. Each tensile bar was held at temperature for 30 min prior to testing and the maximum temperature variation along the gage length was kept below 1°C. In all, 275 samples were tested and each data point plotted is an average of at least two tests. In many cases the point represents up to six tests. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Values of the flow stress at 0.2 pct offset at six different temperatures are plotted vs strain rate on log-log coordinates in Fig. 1. PENNSYLVANIA ANTHRACITE LOCAL SECTION On Saturday evening, Jan. 31, 1914, about 40 members of the Institute met at the Hotel Sterling, Wilkes Barre, Pa., for the purpose of discussing plans for the formation of a local section in the Pennsylvania anthracite region. President Rand; Prof. Joseph W. Richards, of the Board of Directors; Dr. H. M. Chance, Chairman of the Committee on Coal and Coke, and Secretary Stoughton were among the guests present. R. V. Norris acted as Master of Ceremonies, and the arrangements were all made in advance by a Committee under the leadership of Charles Enzian, to whom an enthusiastic vote of thanks was accorded at the dinner. An address was made by President Rand, followed by .Professor Richards, who outlined the procedure necessary for the formation of a Local Section. Addresses were then made by W. J. Richards, F. W. Chase,. C. F. Huber, R. J. Foster, F. A. Hill, H. M. Chance, Bradley Stoughton, and others, after which a rising vote was taken, and it was unanimously decided to petition the Board of. Directors for the establishment of the Pennsylvania -Anthracite Local Section. More than the required number of members then signed -the petition, and President Rand announced the appointment of a Committee to organize the Section and arrange for a meeting in accordance with their By-Laws, consisting of R. V. Norris, W. J. Richards, R. J. Foster, Edwin Ludlow, C. F. Huber, Charles Enzian, Douglas Bunting, F. A. Hill, and J. M. Humphrey.

The recirculation of mine air in an underground colliery, has always been regarded as a hazardous practice in South African collieries. The Mines and Works Act and Regulations states that fresh air, flowing Into an underground section, must flow out directly into the return airways after being utilized once in the section. One of the largest producing underground collieries in South Africa, Initiated a project on controlled recirculation with the permission of the South African Government Mining Engineer. The project involves the recirculation of 65 m3/s of air inside a ventilation district which serves a total of six production areas. The aim of the project was to increase the airflow to the sections without altering the existing ventilation system. Tracer gas studies were carried out to determine the actual distribution of the recirculated air to the individual areas. The results showed that an effective 54,18 m3/s of the recirculated 65 m3/s reaches the sections. This gives an air utilization figure of 83,4 per cent. Dust surveys were also carried out as part of the project to determine the effect of the recirculation of the return air on airborne dust levels. The results showed that the dust levels remained constant in the main intake and return airways and that no hazardous situation was being created. The project proved to be successful and showed that controlled recirculation can be executed and used as a solution for the supply of air to sections without endangering any lives.

Tunnels in the granitic Climax stock at the Nevada Test Site were inspected for keyblock occurrence. Thirteen relatively large pyramidal keyblocks were located in about 230 m (750 it) of tunnel. Orientations, dimensions, joint roughness coefficients, and joint compressive strengths were measured for the faces of nine keyblocks. The measurements were used to back-analyze keyblock stability to check the validity of a numerical model for keyblock behavior. A newly developed three-dimensional numerical model correctly predicted whether or not each keyblock failed in six of eight cases. The two exceptions involved stress conditions and keyblock locations that clearly violated the assumptions that underlie the stability model. The observations also allowed the effect of tunnel orientation on keyblock occurrence to be evaluated. Of the thirteen observed keyblocks, nine large blocks were found in less than 30 m (100 ft) of the Piledriver drift (which runs N56E) while only four blocks of comparable size were observed in 200 m (656 ft) of the Spent Fuel Test--Climax drifts (N61W). The orientations of the keyblock faces were checked against known discontinuity set orientations; some of the faces correlated well with mean set orientations, whi.le other faces were fringe members of sets. Stereographic techniques were used to examine the frequency of keyblock occurrence and to determine the maximum keyblock size that could be encountered with a given combination of discontinuities. Keyblock occurrence was found to be affected by tunnel orientation in a predictable way; this can be used to guide or improve tunnel design practices.

During the driving of the main haulage level at the Copper Mountain mines of the Canada Copper Corpn., Ltd., near Princeton, B. C., some very rapid driving was done, though no claim for a world's record is made. Conditions, however, were unfavorable for economical operations. The cost of power was high, for the fuel was of poor grade; besides, during the time the work was in progress, very little other power was needed so that most of the power cost was charged against the footage. The transmission line consisted of No. 4 galvanized iron wire with the result that the line lass was considerable. The voltage transmitted was about 30,000. The plant was operated under a lease, which was due to expire about the same time this work was supposed to be completed; an extension was refused, therefore speed was most important. The plans called for a straight adit 2900 ft. (884 m.) in length. At a point 2800 ft. (853 m.) from the portal, two raises were to be put up to the next nearest workings, a difference in elevation of about 800 ft. (243 m.). One of these was to be a two-compartment hoistway and the other a zigzag ore pass, or muck run. A location for these raises had been determined by a number of diamond-drill holes, but the material to be penetrated by the adit was not known. Pillar extraction carried out using various methods (split and lift, Wongawilli and Old Ben) involves the formation of narrow fenders (commonly 7 m of coal) formed by driving "splits" for lifting off with a continuous miner. The strata above a split and fender adjacent to the goaf consists of a cantilever beam (usually >3 m thick) that extends from the solid coal and bridges across the fender. Lifting off the fender from the split in safe conditions depends upon the bridging capability of the cantilever and the fender strength. The nature and competence of the immediate and near roof, the support capability of the coal fender and the presence of faults and or joints can adversely affect the bridging behaviour of the cantilever. Insufficient knowledge of these parameters can lead to extraction under dangerous conditions. Remnants of fenders ("stooks") also support the cantilever and their dimensions are critical to obtain regular caving and goaf falls. Stook area, goaf roof span and roof stand-up time after lifting can be related and only a relatively small increase in stook area of 10-15 m2 can lead to a significantly increased stand-up time, especially under a massive roof. Such conditions strongly influence the re- distribution of abutment stresses and can create increased outbye pillar loading. Based on detailed underground geotechnical investigations, it is concluded that strata caveability, roof cantilever behaviour, fender H:W ratio and remnant stook size are all critical parameters for successful and safe pillar extraction.

A review of some aspects of shaft design by G. W. HOLL, Pr. Eng., Associate of the Mine Managers Association of South Africa (Fellow)- and E. G. FAIRON, Pr. Eng., F.S.A.I.E.E., M.I. Cert. M.E.E., M.I.Mech. E., (Visitor) The reasons for the choice of vertical shafts in preference to inclined shafts of comparable capacity are set out, and the conclusion that the former are superior in virtually all circumstances is substantiated. The shapes of vertical shafts sunk during the past sixty years are recorded, and the shapes of those sunk during the past decade are analysed. From this analysis it is clear that circular and elliptical (and quasi-elliptical) shafts are the shafts of the future and that the rectangular shape will conceivably become obsolete. The determination of the size of shaft is discussed and it is forecast that shafts of a diameter of 13 metres and over will probably be sunk without difficulty in the years to come. The depth of the shaft is determined intrinsically by the Mines and Works Regulations applicable to factors pf safety of winding ropes and the design of the winding system. The Blair winder is the most suitable winder for hoisting rock, men, and material from a depth of, say, 3000 metres on an economic basis. Tertiary shafts will, therefore, be unnecessary in future deep-level mining projects at the limit of depth now envisaged. A few other factors relating to shaft design are described.

The aim of this article is to present an application of jet grouting technique in stiff clays for foundations of the natural gas combined cycle power plant, under construction in Aliaga, Turkey. The plant site is in the Aegean coastal region and 60 km north of Izmir. The foundation soil is composed of quaternary alluviums on top and tuff base rock. The thickness of the alluvium varies between 16 m to 30 m. Groundwater was observed 2.5 m below the ground level. At the design stage, settlement analyses were carried out for the various buildings and facilities in the power plant. Based on the analyses, it was predicted that total and differential settlements are not tolerable, thus jet grouting is implemented as a ground improvement under the majority of the foundations of the power plant. This paper also describes the selection of jet grouting technique, application type and details of the process parameters such as injection pressure, number and size of nozzles, lifting and rotation speeds. Prior to the commencement of the jet grouting works, a number of preliminary parameter tests and preliminary pull-out tests were carried out throughout the site in order to define and verify the jet grouting process parameters to achieve the required diameter of 600 mm and minimum jet grout strength of 3.2 MPa. Moreover as part of the comprehensive quality control and quality assurance program pursued in the project, a number of tests; such as continuous coring, integrity testing, installation of confirmatory jet grout columns, were carried out during the production of jet grout columns.

(Member) The iron charged to the basic oxygen furnace at the steel plant of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation has a relatively high sulphur content. Considerable emphasis is therefore placed on the reactivity of the lime. An investigation of the lime used at the steel plant showed that its reactivity had deteriorated considerably both during transport from the supplier (Northern Lime Company) and during storage and handling at the steel plant. The deterioration on the steel plant is the more severe, and is due to hydration and carbonation. Rapid deterioration is a characteristic of highly reactive lime when exposed to the atmosphere. Plant tests showed that the desulphurization efficiency decreases with a decrease in the reactivity of the lime. The addition of slag rich in manganous oxide to the furnace considerably improved the efficiency of desulphurization that can be achieved with limes of lower reactivity and with lime that has deteriorated. A decrease in particle size of lime of lower reactivity greatly increased the desulphurization efficiency. Less lime of higher reactivity is required for the same degree of desulphurization to be achieved. Lime of higher reactivity gives rise to slags with lower ferrous oxide contents and hence the steel yield is increased.

A project to evaluate the South African bagged stone dust explosion barrier was successfully completed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory's (PRL), Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) during the period November 1999 through May 2000. The tests were conducted in a three- entry section of the LLEM. Two types of explosions were used to evaluate the distributed and concentrated bagged barrier performance in a multi-entry mine section. The fuel zone of the first explosion type was only in the center B-drift. In the second explosion type, coal and stone dust mixtures were place in all three drifts. A total of six explosions, including two baseline and four barrier evaluation explosions, were conducted. Of the four barrier explosions, the distributed and concentrated barriers were each evaluated against the two explosion types. For these explosion tests, the distributed barrier extended from about 74 to 170 m and the concentrated barrier from about 74 to 104 m in B-drift. The distributed barrier successfully stopped flame propagation in both types of explosion tests. The flame extended further for the explosion tests where the dust was loaded in all three entries compared with dust loaded only in the center entry% but in both cases the flame was stopped within the barrier zone. The concentrated barrier was also successful in stopping flame propagation m both explosion tests. From the full-scale experimental mine test results, it can be concluded that both bagged barrier designs were effective in stopping coal dust explosions in the multiple entries of the LLEM.

The Buzwagi Project is owned by Barrick Gold Corporation and located in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of central Tanzania in the District of Kahama in the Region of Shinyanga. The property is 6 km Southeast of the town of Kahama, 3 km South and adjacent to the road between Nzega and Burundi. The Buzwagi property is 97 km South of Barrick?s Bulyanhulu Mine. There is access to the rail line which connects from Isaka to the Indian Ocean coastal ports of Dares Salaam and Tanga. The Feasibility Study and permitting were started in early 2006. Project Execution commenced in August 2007. Process Plant commissioning started in January 2009 and the first gold pour is scheduled for Q2 2009. The reserve has been established as 3.3M oz of gold plus 177M lbs of copper. The project has been developed to include a 30Mtpa Open Pit Mine and 4.4 Mtpa Process Plant. Over an expected 15 year mine life, Buzwagi is anticipated to produce approximately 3.02M oz of gold and 220,000 tonnes of copper concentrate. Infrastructure associated with the project includes a 107 km 220kV power line, site accommodation, water harvest and extensive security facilities. The project is expected to be built on budget and on time during a period of extreme market volatility. This paper reviews the initiatives taken to achieve community support, control cost escalation, maintain schedule and manage logistic challenges, plus ensure security and safety of all workers.
