During developing the Ingulska mine at the Mi-churinske uranium deposit in the central part of Ukraine the radioactive rock dumps have been piled. A height of dumps reaches to 15-25m. They occupy a large territory and can be a source of covering with radioactive dust the area around the Ingulska mine. Uranium content exceeds 0,01% in all dump rocks samples while in the dust fraction samples it ranges from 0,01 to 0,06%. Uranium content in road dust at the dump?s foot reaches 0,137%. A new (for Ukraine) method of f-radiography of tree and bush leaves sampled at the territory about 100km2 has been used. It is based on fission of 235U nucleuses due to heat neutron influence in a nuclear reactor and on following study of the Lausan films with tracks drawn by the fractures of these nucleuses. Uranium content of the dif-fusion-disseminated dust type is (0.9-22.2)?10-6% while in the individual particles it can be considered much more because of burned holes in Lavsan above them. The dust content with uranium in Kirovograd reaches to 20-50 part/cm2 while near the dumps it ranges from 100 part/cm2 to 300 part/cm2 in the radius of 1,5-2km from the Ingulska mine.

THE dislocation theory of plastic flow originated in 1928, when Prandtl1 suggested that the internal damping of metals of plastic origin might arise from the motion of a crystalline imperfection. Following this, Dehlinger2 employed a similar imperfection in a theory of recrystallization. The first detailed theoretical discussions were those of E. Orowan3 and G. I. Taylor4 in 1934. The resulting theory was gen- eralized by J. M. Burgers5 in 1939. Mott and Nabarro, in England, and Seitz and Read,6 in the United States, started an extensive examination of the atomic theory of dislocations in the period between 1939 and 1941. However, this development was arrested by the mar and was not taken up again until after 1945. Since 1946, the field has been the object of very intense activity, particularly in the United States and England. Dislocations are beautiful and intricate imperfections; they are sufficiently complicated to account for the great variety of phenomena encountered in the field of plastic flow. Above all, the dislocation concept enables us to understand how a metal or other plastic solid can deform inelastically under very small stresses at temperatures far below the melting point. WHEN metals are subjected to mechanical working, such as rolling, one of the phenomena that take place is a movement of the crystals of the metal into a system or systems of orientation which bear an angular relation to the direction of working. In rolled metal the crystals may orient themselves with respect to the rolling plane or the rolling direction, or both. Direct evidence of the existence of preferred orientations in rolled metal has been obtained by numerous investigators from X-ray patterns of the rolled metal. Most of these workers used a monochromatic pinhole method. Where the degree of preference for a single orientation is high the monochromatic pinhole pattern may be interpreted by a geometrical calculation based on the angular relationships of the planes in the crystal and the diffraction arcs on the X-ray pattern. This process may be aided by the geometrical construction of the locus sphere (Langenkugel), and reflection circles of Polanyi,1 Polanyi and Weissenberg,2 and Mark and Weissenberg,3 and of the plane polar figures (flachenpolfigur) of Franz Wever.4 R. M. Bozorth5 solves X-ray patterns from metals having a single preferred orientation by means of a series of charts which when placed over the X-ray pattern give directly certain angular relationships, between the crystal planes and the surface of the specimen.

A RAPID glance over the history of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia shows that in its fifty years of service, which it is now rounding out, the Society has had an honourable career, rendered signal service to the mining industry of the Province, and helped to shape and improve legislation bearing on our mines and minerals, besicles publishing very many excellent papers and subsequent discussions thereon dealing with all subjects in its field of activity. THE GOLD MINERS? CLUB OF NOVA SCOTIA: The Society has the distinction of being generally regarded as the oldest mining fraternity in Canada ( 1). Iris the direct outgrowth or reorganization of The Gold Miners' Club of Nova Scotia, which was organized in March, 1887, at a period when the gold mining industry was very prominent in the Province. Mr. Geo. W. Stuart, who, in 1934, was the only living member of the parent association, informed me that the seventeen Charter Members of The Gold Miners' Club were John H. Anderson, Charles F. Andrews, A. B. Cox, Clarence H. Dimock, George E. Francklyn, L. W. Getchell, John E. Hardman, Alonzo A. Hayward, Major R. G. Leckie, W. L. Libbey, Edward M. McDonald, G. F. McNaughton, George A. Pyke, H. A. Sanders, C. E. Willis, Benjamin C. Wilson, and George W. Stuart. Others joined later in the same year.

ON May 5, the Washington, D. C., Section, A.I.M.E., devoted its meeting to the many-sided and perplexing question of mineral stock-piling for peace. Opening the symposium, Harry J. Wolf, of the War Production Board, outlined the problem under six heads: (1) Technical. Mechanical, chemical, or metallurgical importance of specified materials, emergencies that might arise, relative scarcity, and critical value of stock piles during emergencies. (2) Economic. Cost to Government, influence of Government stocks on commercial relationships and markets, effect of availability of items as a con¬structive influence on industry, Administration policies now and during postwar period. (3) Legislative. Need for immediate legislative action, need for legislation on postwar conditions as well as on current requirements, a constructive basic policy to prevent political manipulation. (4) Military. Consideration of re¬quirements and supplies bearing on national safety and needed for manufacture of equipment, and adequate reserves of scarce materials for research or experimentation by military agencies. (5) International. Interests of the United Nations in contradistinction to those of the United States; effects of nonisolation policy on nature, location, and administration of stock piles. (6) Negative stock-piling. Question of United Nations' legislation to prevent stock-piling by Axis nations after the war and who shall purchase stock-pile materials and during what periods.

SINCE the U. S. Geological Survey published the data on the Central Mining District collected by Lindgren and Graton1 and by Paige2 much new information has been obtained by development and mapping, but none of it had been published until recently when Kniffin3 published on Fierro, Lasky4 on the Ground Hog mine, Thorne5 on Santa Rita and Landon6 filed a thesis on the Fierro-Hanover-Santa Rita area at the Uni-versity of Chicago. During the years 1927-1930 much of the writer's time was spent in mapping the geology and ore deposits of this district, particularly in the area of the zinc deposits at Hanover. Some of the data collected are presented here. Previous publications have been freely drawn upon and additional data used that were generously supplied by L. M. Kniffin, Wilfred Wright and Gerald Ballmer. Thanks are due Augustus Locke, Samuel G. Lasky, Kniffin, Wright and Ballmer for suggestions and critical readings of the manuscript, and to the Empire Zinc Co. Diamond drilling is a relatively new commodity in terms of drilling. The first known diamond drilling activities were carried out in the Swiss Alps around 1863 when the Swiss engineer M Leschot designed and made a tube with a diamond set face which was used in probing ahead drilling for the Mont Cenis tunnel (Figure 1). Craelius AB which today is a part of the Atlas Copco Group was formed in 1886. The name Craelius is a family name and the founder of the company was Per Anton Craelius (Figure 2). He went to the United States to study this new technology using diamonds to extract core samples and when he returned to Sweden designed his first diamond drilling machine. It was a man-powered drill needing a crew of six men, two to crank the unit, one to feed, two to power the flush pump and a foreman (Figure 3). As time passed through research and development, the original design was improved and manpower was substituted for steam engines and later combustion engines or electric motors (Figure 4). During the 1930s the drills radically changed designs and took the form of the short stroke drills which to a certain extent are still in use today. The original design of these drills have been refined during the years, hydraulic chucks, gear boxes and other improvements have been added.

"It is a truism that the metals, and particularly the precious metals tend to monopolize the attention of those interested £n the mineral industry. This is a tendency to be mildly, but actively and continuously combatted if we are to have a well-rounded mineral development." There are in the province of Ontario a number of industries centred about the non-metallic minerals. Too little is heard of the part these play in our industrial life. It is with the intention of showing what the gypsum industry is doing in Ontario that this paper is written. The writer lays no claim to any originality in the discussion and merely offers some material in an endeavour to assist in bringing about that 'well-rounded mineral development' sought for Ontario. M. Y. Williams in his "The Silurian Geology and Faunas of Ontario Peninsula and Manitoulin and Adjacent Islands"1 in discussing the industries dependent on the Silurian rocks of south-western Ontario points out that "the splendidly ordered gypsum mine at Caledonia, formerly owned by the Alabastine Company of Paris, and now owned by the Ontario Gypsum Company, is a revelation to the average man, who disconnects mining entirely with this part of Ontario". This region is better known as one of the richest and most thickly settled agricultural areas in Canada.

Fire development and spread along conveyor belts in ventilated ducts were investigated experimentally and theoretically. Various types of conveyor belts used in mining applications were ignited and burned in a full-scale gallery under various flow conditions. The flame spread rates depended strongly on the ventilation air speed. The time-temperature traces of gas and belt obtained at 12 feet from the entrance show that a rapid belt surface temperature change takes place prior to a change in the gas temperature, indicating that radiative heat transfer from the flame to the belt surface plays an important role. Further, anomalies in the flame spread rate in the vicinity of 1.5 m/s air speed (i.e., much greater rate than that observed at either higher or lower speeds) can be explained through the mechanism of flame tilt and the resultant view factor between the flame surface and the belt surface. In order to correlate the fire spread with material properties of the conveyor belts (such as the specific heat, the thermal conductivity, and the pyrolysis temperature) and the fire environment (such as the gas temperature and the ventilation air speed), a theoretical model has been developed. This model is based on the experimental observation that the radiative heat transfer is the dominant mode of energy transfer ahead of the flame front. Agreement between the theory and the experimental results is good.

This research project which took place at Brunswick Mining and Smelting's Brunswick mine, was undertaken to assess the ability of new diesel engine technology to meet current and anticipated underground worker exposure limits to diesel exhaust contaminants. Concentrations of CO, CO2 NO, NO2 SO2 and respirable combustible dust (RCD) were measured in a remote mine area where a haulage truck was operating under simulated duty cycles. The 26 ton haulage truck was equipped with a 300 hp, electronically controlled engine. Fresh air was supplied to the area as per the MSHA certification document for this particular engine. Results showed that while the vehicle operated in a normal and realistic duty cycle, the concentrations of contaminants remained well below the ACGIH guidelines for the threshold limit values (TLV)for exposure. While operating at 630/0 of maximum horsepower (26 tons of ore in the dump), the time-weighted average exhaust gases concentrations (CO, CO2 NO, NO2 and SO2) never exceeded 150/0 of their respective TL Vs. ReD concentrations in this instance were measured at 0.59 mg/mJ or 39.30/0 of the exposure limit suggested by the Canadian ad hoc Diesel Committee. The Air Quality Index was 1.55 or 520/0 of the maximum suggested value for exposure.

Hunkered up against the spine of the Andes in a tight valley where natural refuge from avalanche hardly exists is the daring Rio Blanco project of Cerro Corp. The deposit here was found in 1904, but nature has foiled all previous attempts to open it. To an experienced mountaineer or a highway engineer with mountain experience, the avalanche hazard in the valley of the Blanco river would be immediately apparent. The collar shaft is at the head of the valley at an elevation of 3600 m and for 12 km down the valley there is no space on the floor for building very much; the dissected rock walls are roadways for avalanches and even a highway could not be maintained sufficiently passable. This is the proposition taken on by the Cerro Corp. Chilean National Decree #1699, passed on December 9, 1966, signified "Go" to the Compania Minera Andina, a company whose shares are held 70% by the Cerro Corp. and 30% by the government of Chile. The orebody, although only partially delineated, contains proven reserves of 120 million tons of ore averaging 1.58% Cu. When the operation comes on stream in the last quarter of 1970, it will be at the rate of 11,000 tpd. Annual production will be 65,000 tpy of recoverable copper in concentrates.

The Zabirah bauxite is a Cretaceous paleolaterite exposed by postTertiary uplift and erosion of the Phanerozoic sequence. The laterite profile, which is preserved in situ, occupies a prominent angular unconformity over a sequence of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones ranging from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous in age, and is overlain by a Late Cretaceous terrigenous and carbonate package. The profile is known to be preserved over an area of 250 sq km and at depths below the present surface of up to 80 m. The bauxite layer is hard, compact and predominantly pisolitic, with a variety of subordinate, superimposed textures resulting from post-formation alteration. The bauxite minerals are boehmite and gibbsite. Boehmite generally predominates, and the boehmite:gibbsite ratio averages 2:1, with a marked tendency for the proportion of boehmite to increase down the profile. Kaolinite, a major constituent of the profile, is concentrated in two zones, one above and one below the pisolitic bauxite layer. Iron content is variable and bears a direct relationship to parent-rock lithology. Genesis and preservation of the bauxite are due to the favourable coincidence of a number of geological controls of which the most significant are the local structural and sedimentary regimes, the lithology and chemistry of the parent rocks, and the Cretaceous paleogeography of the region.

EXPERIMENTS performed in this laboratory on the flow of gas-liquid mixtures through unconsolidated sands have been described and discussed in an earlier paper.4 In these earlier experiments a definite relationship was found between the liquid saturation of a sand and its permeability to the liquid or gas phase. Furthermore, the nature of the sand, the permeabilities of the sands over a range between 17 and 260 darcies, appeared to have a negligible effect upon the saturation-permeability relation. Likewise experiments indicated that the viscosity of the liquid, or the substitution of an immiscible liquid for the gas phase, had only a very slight effect on the permeability-saturation relation. This con-clusion has since been definitely confirmed by the experiments of M. C. Leverett3 on the flow of oil and water through unconsolidated sands. The sands used by Leverett were of very low permeability (between 6.8 and 1.04 darcies), while the oil-water viscosity ratio varied between 90 and 0.057. Since the sands that constitute petroleum reservoirs are largely con-solidated, although of widely varying degrees of consolidation, it was desirable to extend the experiments on gas-liquid mixtures to consolidated sand. In the study of consolidated sands additional variables are involved, but for the initial experiments the only new variable to be intro-duced was the cementing material.

The more stringent ventilation requirements of the 1969 Act have created a greater need for improved network analyses. More air is required at the last open crosscut (9000 cfm) and for the first time a minimum quantity is specified for the face (3000 cfm). Severe restrictions are placed on both belt and track haulage, and the intake air cannot contain more than 2 mg per cu m of respirable dust, to be reduced to 1 mg later. Larger tonnage and longer life mines are the trend today, necessitating multiple fans and shafts. Yet relatively little engineering goes into designing the mine ventilation system. In this paper a ventilation system is designed for a typical Pittsburgh block system, manual calculations are made and then checked by a computer solution. The computer is the ideal tool to try out proposed changes on paper to insure that the entire mine is properly ventilated and no costly adjustments need be made by dumping air. While it is theoretically possible to solve complex ventilation network problems by hand, it is not practical to do so because of the tremendous man-hours required and the many opportunities for errors. Thus the digital computer is indispensible to the ventilation engineer and newer improved ventilation programs are being developed to more realistically model mine ventilation networks. Suggested ventilation changes to comply with the new regulations are also critically evaluated.

In this study, hydrometallurgical processing of waste ZnO flue dust arising during zinc removal from galvanized low-alloy steel sheets was investigated on a laboratory-scale to obtain electrolytic zinc. The flue dust was separated from flue gases, generated during heating waste galvanized steel sheets in an electric furnace under air atmosphere at temperatures of about 1000oC. The dust, comprising tetragonal ZnO and insignificant amounts of SiO2, was contaminated by Fe, Mn, Pb, Al, Mg, Pb, Cu and Ca. The dust was leached in 0.5 and 1.0M H2SO4 and/or in 20 and 30% NaOH at different temperatures and different liquid-to-solid ratios to determine the optimum conditions leading to the highest possible selectivity of leaching and efficiency of Zn extraction in minimum time. The subsequent electrowinning process was performed with refined zinc sulphate leach liquors and/or with untreated zinc caustic solutions. Zinc sulphate leach liquors were purified using a combination of a hydrolytic pH-controlled precipitation, cementation and carbon refining. Effects of operational variables on Zn electrowinning have been studied for both sulphate and caustic electrolytes. The conventional plate-plate electrowinning cell has been explored in this study. Comparison of results obtained for both zinc electrowinning from acid sulphate and alkaline solutions is presented contribution.

Red bauxites from Breadnut Valley, Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, are very homogeneous in texture. Bauxite minerals are uniformly distributed in a groundmass, the predominant grain size being smaller than l um (Figure 1 Although the deposits have a massive, non-stratified structure, they all seem to have been affected by postformational faulting which is evidenced by shear zones running subvertically through the deposits. These shear zones stand out very clearly because of a yellow staining along their faces. Often yellow zones, ranging from a few m to several cm in thickness, have developed. When the shear zones are cut at an angle, they appear as yellow veins. Near the surface of the deposits, yellow material forms shallow irregular lenses (Figure 2). In most cases, tree roots (hair roots), or their imprints, are associated with the shear zones or stained areas. In fact, the yellowish color is especially pronounced along these roots and often disappears where the roots end (Figure 3). The mineral composition and texture of red groundmass and yellow zones are markedly different. Secondary phosphate minerals and a higher goethite to hematite ratio characterize the mineral composition of the yellow zones. It should also be noted that Al-substitution in goethite from these areas is significantly higher than in goethite occurring in the groundmass (Figure 4).

THE legislatures of New York and New Jersey, determined in 1919 that a vehicular tunnel should be built under the Hudson River. On July 1, 1919, an engineering staff was organized with the late Clifford M. Holland as chief engineer, and this staff was given a number of problems to solve, such as location, size, type of tunnel, method of construction, method of ventilation and cost. After a period of preliminary investigations and studies it was decided to build the tunnel at Canal St., New York, connecting 12th St., Jersey City. This is the center of the heaviest traffic across the Hudson River. It was also decided to build two tunnels-one for west-bound traffic and one for east-bound traffic-the tunnels to be of cast iron, built up of segments and bolted together, each tunnel to have a roadway 20 ft. wide and a clear heat room of 13 ft., 6 in. This is to provide for two lines of vehicles in each direction. The tunnels have an exterior diameter of 29 ft., 6 in. The interior lining is of concrete, the sidewalls tiled with a vitreous white tile and the roadways paved with granite block. The entrances and exits at both ends are separated by two blocks so as to reduce traffic congestion.
