R. L. LOOFBOUROW 26.1-WATER FLOW, USE, EFFECTS, CONTROL Sec. 4 discusses ground water as a mineral resource. This section deals wits its control. 26.1.1-IMPORTANCE Flows of water have an important effect on the cost and progress of many deep excavations. The existence of water limits the methods which can be used in some and presents hazards in others. Lowering the water table may reduce the flow of springs and wells, with legal liability. Some mine water is used directly, some must he treated before discharge, and some contains dissolved solids which can be recovered profitably. Loss of life, property and production from flooding is grim, yet scores of mines have worked safely for generations under ground-water reservoirs, lakes and even the sea. The need for better control of mine water is measured by the severity of recent floodings, concern with the quality of the effluent, and direct and indirect costs of working wet ground. There are improvements in freezing in shaft sinking. pumps and their controls, treatment of mine water before it is pumped, bulkhead construction and certain efforts to reduce inflow. 26.1.2-PUMPING COST VS. COST OF WET WORK Direct operating and capital costs of pumping are more evident than indirect items, such as provision of extra standby power and maintenance facilities, The total of all these items is the cost of pumping water from an excavation. This is only a part of the extra cost of working wet as compared to dry ground. Less productive methods, less efficient equipment and more expensive explosives may have to he used in wet work. Wet rock plugs certain equipment. Maintenance is higher and labor less efficient. The cost of any means of keeping work drier should he weighed against the higher cost of working wet. The true difference in the cost of working wet ground, compared with dry, probably is known at only a few places (see checklist of cost items. Sec. 26.4.13). An extreme comparison of mining wet and dry ore is available from Ambrosia Lake, N.M. (Fig. 26-1). Between 1963 and 1967, a wet and a dry mine were worked by the same company under conditions otherwise comparable. Average operating cost at the wet mine, pumping 1,600 to 1,800 gpm. was $16.06 per ton of ore. The comparable figure for the dry mine was $7.50. Principal differences included the fact that the wet mine was worked from drainage levels below the, ore with rail haulage, the dry mine in the ore with off-track equipment loading and hauling to the shaft. In the wet mine, ore packed in chutes, cars and skips and froze in surface bins, stockpiles and trucks. Wet-mine costs included drilling drain holes, building and maintaining ditches and pumping water containing abrasive solids.

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) geofoam has long been used in numerous geotechnical applications due to its lightweight and durability. Among these applications is the use of EPS as an alternative fill material to conventional roadway soil embankments. This study investigates the benefits of using EPS roadway embankments to reduce the induced stresses and strains on the underlying peat and soft clay. Firstly, mechanical and interface properties of the EPS were acquired from a companion study that also considered the cyclic loading and creep effects. In order to determine the actual stress-strain distribution within the EPS blocks, a physical prototype was developed in this study with overall dimensions of 1.2 x 1.0 x 0.5 m, with a density of 35 kg/m3. The prototype EPS blocks were subjected to cyclic loading with intensities ranging from 10 to 50 kN. Then, a numerical model was developed to simulate the behavior of EPS roadway embankments. The numerical model outcomes were verified against the prototype measurements. A parametric design study was also conducted to develop a correlation between EPS embankment height and the stress-strain that occur in the underlying strata. Results showed that EPS embankments could reduce stress and settlement in the underlying soil by about 40% and 54%, respectively. EPS APPLICATIONS AND BACKGROUND Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) geofoam blocks have been effectively used during the past several decades in numerous geotechnical applications. EPS static and dynamic properties as well as interface behavior were extensively characterized in various published studies such as that conducted by Horvath, 1994; Stark et al., 2004; Zarnani and Bathurst, 2008; Trandafir et al., 2010; Athanasopoulos et al., 2012; AbdelSalam and Azzam, 2016; and others. However, to be able to use locally produced EPS blocks, its physical and mechanical properties must be thoroughly determined. The lightweight and compressible material of EPS geofoam makes it suitable both as a backfill and for absorbing pressure in both the vertical and horizontal directions. Kim et al. (2010) adopted EPS as an alternative for soil backfill around buried pipes; their model showed a reduction in the vertical stress acting on the pipes by up to 36%. Oshati et al. (2012) presented a case study of a field-instrumented box culvert with EPS blocks on top, which reduced vertical stress by 58%. Meguid et al. (2017) used an EPS inclusion to surround culverts and achieved up to 72% stress reduction, depending on the EPS density and the culvert depth to width ratio. AbdelSalam et al. (2017) used a relatively thin EPS inclusion behind flexible cantilever retaining walls, verifying that the lateral pressure can be significantly reduced by 25%; they also developed a design chart for this application. Moreover, AbdelSalam et al. (2019) investigated the use of EPS as a lightweight alternative for soil backfill above shallow tunnels. It was found that EPS had created a differential movement between the wedge located above the tunnel and the neighboring soils, which accordingly reduced the vertical stress acting on the tunnel by 85%, due to the use of lightweight EPS material and positive soil arching.

"Abstract - The Louvicourt Au-Ag-Cu-Zn-Pb sulfide deposit is hosted by a Middle Ordovician calc-alkaline sequence of aphyric rhyolite flows and associated fragmental rocks at the top of the Flat Landing Brook Formation. The Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.110) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.021) ratios in the footwall felsic volcanic rocks are consistent with known values for the Reids Brook member. The deposit consists of two concordant lenses of semi-massive to massive sulfides, approximately 150 m long and up to 9 m thick, which represent a fold repetition of a single exhalative horizon. The deposit contains a geologic resource of 136 000 tonnes grading 1.2% Pb, 1.0% Zn, 0.4% Cu, 90.9 g/t Ag, and 0.96 g/t Au; the deposit locally contains elevated Au (2.9 ppm) and Ag (320 ppm) contents. A laterally continuous iron formation that contains barite caps the deposit, and is gradational vertically and laterally into laminated siltstone. The exhalite confirms the stratiform nature of this deposit, but a large percentage of sulfides occur as late replacements of altered felsic fragmental rocks in the footwall. Abundant examples of colloform pyrite and perlitic and spherulitic textures in volcanic clasts are well preserved. The base- and precious-metal content of the Louvicourt deposit is atypical of the Bathurst Mining Camp (BMC). Reported assay data (n = 27) indicate an average Pb/Zn ratio of 2.6, the highest in the BMC (average = 0.39). Lead exhibits a strong Spearman Rank correlation (r' = 0.92) with base metals throughout the sequence, indicating a preponderance of galena in both the stockwork and stratiform zones. The Ag and Au contents in this deposit are among the highest in the BMC and exhibit a Au-Ag- Cu-Pb association. Barite-rich exhalative pyrite exhibits a moderate Au correlation with Ag (r' = 0.77; n = 10) and Cu (r' = 0.76) and occurs in portions of the exhalative sulfides that are enriched in Pb. Chemical exhalative rocks are conformably overlain by trachy-andesitic volcaniclastic (possibly pyroclastic) rocks that are assigned to the Little River Formation. These are enriched in Nb (average = 38.4 ppm) and P2O5 (average = 0.17 wt.%), and have much lower Zr/TiO2 (average = 0.056) and Y/TiO2 (average = 0.0062) relative to rocks higher in the hanging wall. The intermediate volcanic rocks are conformably overlain by massive to pillowed basalt flows and related hyaloclastite that have Nb/Y = 0.60 and high TiO2 contents (average = 2.8 wt.%). This chemistry is consistent with rocks of the Brunswick Mines member (Little River Formation), except that these rocks are considerably enriched in P2O5 (average = 0.82 wt.%). This syngenetic exhalative deposit is unique for the BMC with a high Pb/Zn and elevated Au and Ag contents, as well as an epithermal signature (Sb-Ag-Au-Tl-Hg), analogous to high sulfidation volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. Its intimate relationship with an emergent felsic dome (Flat Landing Brook Formation), chlorite-silicate-oxide-sulfide exhalite (locally hematitic), and the abundance of barite are classical features of many of the Kuroko deposits."

"Audrey Resources' Mobrun Mine is located in Dufresnoy Township some 30 km to the northeast of Rouyn-Noranda. The Mobrun tine deposits consist of two major massive sulphide lenses; the newly discovered 1100 lens located 450 m south of the Main zone, and one ntellite lens, the 850-870-930 complex.The 1100 lens is hosted in a large pyroclastic unit bounded to the mouth by rhyolite and andesite flows and by a thick rhyolite unit to the art h. stratigraphically belon the three lenses. It consists of approximately 15 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 10.4 Mt are of economic ade. The Main lens lies comformably above thick rhyolite flows, ecciated and pyritized by the sulphide horizon, and is overlain by ttercalated ash tuffs and rhyolites which host the over-lying satellite ns. The Main lens consists of 3,3 Mt of massive sulphide, of which 523 000 tgrade0.80% Cu, 2.44%Zn,30.19 g/t Ag, and2.2 g/t Au he richer satellite lens (180 000 t) is part of the same volcanic stem and resulted from a resurgence of hydrothermal activity. ructure played a role in the final geometry of the deposits but did not eatly affect the volcanogenic and stratabound nature of the lens. Total production since the start of operations in 1985 amounts to 58 000 t and is restricted to the Main lens. While there has been continual improvement in the models for predicating deposition velocity and pipeline friction losses, the fundamental design philosophy for tailings pipelines has remained the same over the previous three or four decades: design the tailings pipeline to operate in turbulent flow without a deposit on the pipe invert for all expected process conditions. Recent improvements in the understanding of slurry pipeline flows allows for the design of pipelines operating with a deposit on the pipe invert, allowing the system to operate at moderate velocities for high flow rates, optimizing system energy requirements and maximizing pipeline wear life. Tailings pipelines are increasingly operated at higher solids concentrations where there is a greater likelihood the pipeline will operate in laminar flow due to the higher tailings slurry rheology. Historically, slurry pipelines have been operated in turbulent flow. We now know that laminar flow pipeline operation is possible as there are several operational laminar flow tailings pipelines. While our understanding of laminar flow slurry pipelines is not complete, recent research provides guidance on how to approach the design of these pipelines. New sensor technology has led to the development of an instrument that provides reliable indication of bed deposit height within a pipeline. This technology is particularly helpful in operating pipelines with a deposit and has application in better understanding the operation of laminar flow pipelines. Failure of tailings pipelines can result in consequent damage to surrounding structures and unacceptable spillage into the environment. Modern pipeline leak detection technology allows operators to better manage this risk by ensuring safe and reliable operation of tailings pipelines. This paper provides an overview of the each of the above advances in the design and operation of tailings pipelines. OPERATING TAILINGS PIPELINES WITH A DEPOSIT Tailings pipelines, and slurry pipelines in general, are typically designed to operate without a deposit on the pipeline invert. Meaning, the minimum operating velocity exceeds the turbulent deposition velocity. This approach has been adopted due to concerns regarding potential blockage of a pipeline operating with a deposit. Figure 1 shows a typical design duty envelope for a tailings delivery system as a function of solids throughput and solids concentration by mass. If the pipeline is designed to operate without a deposit at the lowest duty flow rate (4,480 m3/h), the operating velocity at the highest duty flow rate (6,590 m3/h) is about 1.5 times the deposition velocity. Considering that the pipeline wear and energy requirements are roughly proportional to the square of operating velocity, this results in an operationally inefficient system when the pipeline is operated close to the maximum design flow rate. Most systems tend to operate at maximum throughput after post-startup debottlenecking optimizations. Alternative Approach An alternate design approach is to ensure the pipeline operates without a deposit for the nominal flow rate and accept that a deposit will form when operating at lower flow rates. This results in the selection of a larger diameter pipeline, but there are significant benefits in terms of reduced energy requirements and lower pipeline wear.

BECAUSE of the wide use of platinum in industry and research, the physical properties of this metal, including its vapor pressure, have been studied in some detail.' The other members of the palladium-platinum group of metals have not been studied as extensively, and only qualitative information is available on the vapor pressure of palladium. Data given in literature by Vines1 and Brewer2 on the vapor pressure of palladium are based on the qualitative observations by Holborn and Austin3 and Crookes4 on the rate of volatilization of palladium filaments in various atmospheres. The general observation that palladium is the most volatile metal of the palladium-platinum metal group was corroborated by Bell, Love and Normand who studied the separation of isotopes of the platinum-group metals by a mass spectrometric method. We have measured the vapor pressure of palladium using the Knudsen effusion technique. In this work, the effusion vessel was suspended from a quartz-fiber microbalance into an induction furnace, and the amount of vapor effusing from the vessel was determined by direct weighing of the vessel during the measured heating times. This technique has been described in a report from this laboratory." The vapor pressure of palladium was calculated from these measurements using the equation P...... = 17.14 -W- (77m)'u [1] a t where ? is the weight loss in grams of vapor of molecular weight m from a vessel having an orifice of a sq cm, during t sec. The derivation of this equation from kinetic theory has been described in a previous report from this laboratory: as well as in texts discussing the kinetic theory of gases.%" Test Vessel—In the search for a suitable material for the effusion vessel, it was found that tantalum reacted with palladium metal to form intermetallic compounds, and graphite was readily dissolved in palladium metal to form what appeared to be a liquid phase at a temperature several hundred degrees below the melting point of palladium. On cooling, the graphite gathered into spherical balls in the palladium, with crystals extending radially from the center of these balls, some of which were a millimeter or more in diameter. However, palladium metal vapor did not attack the graphite vessel, so graphite could be used where it did not contact condensed palladium. Tungsten did not appear to react with palladium vapor or molten palladium at its melting point, but it was not convenient to use a tungsten-vapor pressure vessel because of the difficulty of fabricating this metal. Since the vapor-pressure range to be studied (10 2 to 10 ' mm) did not appear to extend above the melting point of palladium, a combination of tungsten and graphite served to provide a very satisfactory effusion vessel. The lower half of the graphite vessel was lined with some strips of tungsten foil and the sample of palladium consisting of a coil of sheet was placed in the tungsten liner; in this way, no contamination of the palladium by carbon occurred. Salt from Great Salt Lake was probably used by the Native Americans prior to the Jim Bridger Expedition to the lake in 1824-25, and was used by the region's early explorers and trappers after that time. From the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in 1847, salt has been produced from Great Salt Lake, starting first with the collection of crude salt from along its shores, and later by boiling down the lake's brine to obtain crystalline salt. Since these early beginnings, salt production from the lake has become a substantial commercial enterprise. Since the early 1960s, research and development have led to the economic production of potassium sulfate, magnesium metal, chlorine gas, magnesium chloride products, and nutritional supplements. Many of the salt-production techniques and equipment that were developed prior to 1964 are still being used today. Sodium sulfate has been produced, but is no longer marketed. Morton Salt, Cargill Salt, and IMC Salt currently extract sodium chloride, which is precipitated during the early stages of evaporation when the brine concentration reaches saturation, or about 26 to 27 percent total dissolved solids. Magnesium Corporation of America produces magnesium metal and chlorine gas, and IMC Kalium Ogden Corporation produces potassium sulfate, as well as magnesium chloride brine and flake products. These salt, gaseous, and metallic products are processed from the sodium-chloride-saturated, high-magnesium-chloride brines, and from the potassium and magnesium salts that are precipitated from the lake brine after it has been further concentrated. One obstacle to salt production is the fluctuating level of Great Salt Lake. In 1983, the lake level began a dramatic rise from an elevation of 4,200 feet (1,280.16 m) to its historic high of 4.211.85 feet (1,283.77 m) in 1986-87 (uncorrected USGS provisional lake-level records). The State of Utah employed flood-control measures, including breaching the Southern Pacific Railroad causeway in 1984, and pumping lake water to a shallow basin west of the lake in 1987. During the high-water years, the lake's mineral-extraction industries faced many challenges including the need to raise dikes to prevent flooding of facilities, broken dikes which resulted in the inundation of solar ponds, and dealing with the lake's greatly reduced brine salinities which resulted in lower annual salt and concentrated-brine production. The years following the record-high lake levels have been a time of adaptation, innovation, and change for Great Salt Lake industries. After its solar ponds were flooded in 1986, AMAX, Inc. built a new solar-pond complex near Knolls, and used the concentrated brines from the West Pond, generated by the State's West Desert Pumping Project. Great Salt Lake Minerals built a 21-mile-long (33.8 km) open, underwater canal, called the Behrens Trench, to convey concentrated brines from a new, remote solar pond on the west side of the lake to the east side of the lake, to help increase its production of sulfate-of-potash. There were also numerous changes in corporate ownership and production-facility locations.

The outstanding developments of the year in southwestern Pennsylvania were the establishment of the Summit Fayette County gas pool and the gas pool in Nicholson township, Fayette County, and Monongahela township, Greene County, as major producing areas, and the indication of four new shallow gas pools. Curtailment of drilling for shallow gas is expected to follow order M68 of the Office of Production Management. Gas completions were approximately 70 per cent higher, oil completions nearly 25 per cent lower, dry holes were unchanged and drilling wells as of Dec. 31, 1941, nearly loo per cent higher than last year. Shallow Development Oil.—Outside Butler County, only 11 producers were drilled, with a total initial of 221 bbl. The best of these was in a portion of Gilmore township, Greene County, which ordinarily produces gas. This well flowed 77 bbl. in 11 hr., along with about one million cubic feet of gas from the Fourth (U.Dev.) sand. Washington County had a 10.20 and a 25-bbl. well in Morris township and a 20-bbl. well in South Franklin township. These were all in the Fifth Sand. The price of oil to Jan. 27 was $1.80 per barrel, when a 15¢ increase was made. This was followed by a raise of 20¢ on Apr. 23, 15¢ on May 21, 20¢ on June 18 and 25¢ on Aug. 14. The last increase was canceled on Aug. 23 by the Office of Price Administration, which pegged southwestern Pennsylvania crude at $2.40 per barrel. Gas.—An almost doubled initial production of natural gas is the result of the large increase in number of wells drilled. The outstanding discovery of the year was in the vicinity of Armbrust, Hempfield township, Westmoreland County, where a well drilled to what at first was considered the Bayard sand, but what is now known to be the Fifth (U.Dev.) sand, at 2100 ft. found nearly 5 million cu. ft. of gas. Since this completion 14 wells have been finished, only one of which was dry, giving a combined total open flow of approximately 15 million cu. ft. The sand is 35 to 40 ft. thick and the saturation extends through most of that thickness. Rock pressure, which is 1040 lb. per sq. in., is abnormally high. An area of only about one square mile has been proven but some of the 24 new wells drilling as of Dec. 31 will no doubt extend it considerably. This development has taken place in an area heretofore considered to have had little prospect. There were three good wells in other parts of Westmoreland County. One well in Franklin township, which had 12 million cu. ft, of gas in the Fifth sand, was entirely surrounded by dry holes but is still pro- . ducing at a high rate. In Bell township a 1.6 million cu. ft. well was found in the Speechley (U.Dev.) sand and in Washington township the same sand produced 2.7 million cu. ft. with shut-in pressure of 970 Ib. at 2820 ft. This well is offset by two dry holes and one well with a capacity of only 10 M cubic feet.

Introduction Limestone injection work was completed in a 440-kW (1.5-million Btu per hour) pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000-kg/h (110,000-lb per hour) industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives were to: (1) identify the important variables that affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum SO2 removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. A more detailed report is given by Lewis et al. (1985). The test program was divided into two phases. The objectives of Phase I were to determine the important variables that affect SO2 reduction and to investigate the effect of limestone addition on combustor operation and heat transfer surfaces. The objective of Phase II was to determine, using only the important variables identified during Phase I, the conditions that resulted in the greatest sulfur dioxide reduction. Phase I Test program Using one limestone, five variables were identified as having an effect on SO2 reduction. These are noted with their respective ranges: heat release rate [103 to 166 kW/m3 (10,000 to 16,000 Btu per hour-cu ft)], Ca/S molar ratio (0 to 3), flue gas oxygen concentration (3% to 5%), additive particle size [90% -150 µm (-100 mesh) and 90% -45 µm (-325 mesh)], and burner stoichiometry (SR = 0.75 and >1.15). A 2.3% sulfur northern West Virginia coal, pulverized to a nominal grind of 70% -75 µm (-200 mesh), was burned for the tests. The limestone used was obtained from a Maysville, KY, quarry and contained 51.75% (wt) CaO. An 11-run statistically designed program (plus three duplicates) was used to screen the five variables. The effect of limestone injection on the combustor heat transfer surfaces was determined by comparing the heat transfer rates through a slag panel and fouling probes during periods with and without limestone injection. Combustor operation was determined by noting any operating problems that occurred during the tests. Test procedure After furnace wall temperatures had stabilized at operating conditions, heat transfer surfaces (slag panel and fouling probes) and the convection section were blown clean, and a four-hour test was begun. The current laboratory methods for assessing the vibration attenuation performance of seats involve repetitive trials with a number of human occupants, and raise certain ethical concerns. Moreover, the measurements with human subjects yield considerable variability in the data. Alternatively, several anthropodynamic manikins have been developed for effective assessments of the coupled seat occupant system [1]. The effectiveness of a manikin in predicting the response of a coupled seat-occupant system lies in its ability to reproduce the biodynamic response of the seated human body in terms of force-motion relationship at the body-seat interface, such as apparent mass (APMS). A number of prototype manikins have thus been developed on the basis of biodynamic characteristics of vertical vibration-exposed seated occupants of different body masses in the vicinity of 5th, 50th and 95th percentile male population. This study concerns with the analysis of a passive prototype manikin to enhance its ability to reproduce the idealized APMS response characteristics of the vibration-exposed seated human subjects defined in ISO-5982[2] for mean body masses of 55, 75 and 98 kg. Methods The APMS responses of a prototype anthropodynamic passive manikin were thoroughly characterized in the laboratory under different excitations and body mass configurations. The manikin was designed with sufficient flexibility to configure mechanical-equivalent models corresponding to seated body masses of 55, 75 and 98 kg, by adding/removing specified masses and springs (Fig. 1). The manikin, configured for a specific body mass, was positioned on a rigid seat without a backrest, which was fixed to the force platform of a whole-body vertical vibration simulator. The simulator was programmed to synthesize random vertical vibration with flat acceleration power spectrum in the 0.4-20 Hz frequency range with two different magnitudes: 1 and 2 m/s2 overall rms acceleration. The total static and dynamic forces of the manikin to and the seat were measured using the force platform, while a single axis accelerometer was installed on the seat pan to measure acceleration due to vertical excitation. STUDIES of the transformation of austenite at constant subcritical temperatures have been numerous since the work of Davenport and Bain.1 Considerable information has been obtained on low-alloy steels and on high-carbon alloys containing undissolved carbide or graphite at the austenitizing temperature. Little is known of the isothermal transformation of austenite containing in solution large amounts of both carbon and a single alloying element. In this investigation four steels containing one per cent carbon and with chromium in the range 3 to 9 per cent have been examined with the view to establishing the fundamental character of the isothermal reactions when all carbon and chromium are initially in solution in austenite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys The chemical compositions of the steels investigated are given in Table I. The 4 per cent Cr alloy is a commercial steel. The other steels were made by the Carpenter Steel Co. as 50-lb., induction-furnace heats and rolled to 5/8-in. round bars. Bars were softened at 650° to 700°C. before the specimens were cut. [ ] Metallographic Method Most of the lines on the transformation diagrams presented here have been placed on the basis of the microscopic examination of partially reacted specimens. Thees specimens were approximately ½ by ¼ by 1/8 in. in size. Specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel were held 10 to 12 hr. at 1200° to I225°C. before quenching to the various subcritical temperatures. The other steels were held for 2 to 2 ½ hr. at 1200°C. before quenching. These treatments, carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, produced an austenite grain size larger than A.S.T.M. No. I, some grains being 1 to 2 mm. in diameter. There were a few undissolved carbide particles in some specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel. It is believed, however, that any errors in the results due to incomplete solution of carbon and chromium in austenite are negligible; that is, austenite compositions may be considered as being those listed in Table I. The Frémont test for measuring the energy consumed in breaking a notched bar of steel is not so well known in this country as it deserves to be. The test specimen used in this test is about # by 6 by about 16 in., notched with a hack saw on the lower side to cause the piece to break at a fixed point. A weight of 10 kg. falling 4 m., and provided with a knife or chisel which strikes the specimen, breaks the test piece by impact. The residual force in the falling weight after it has broken the specimen is recorded by a suitable device, and the difference between the total energy and the residual energy of the weight (in kilogrammeters) is the force consumed in breaking the specimen. An experience of several years with the Frémont testing machine has shown its great value in readily detecting brittleness not revealed by tensile testing or slow bending testing. In this paper it is proposed to discuss (1) the supersensitiveness of the test as applied to cast steel and (2) its value in revealing the effect of heat treatment under certain conditions. In testing coupons cut from castings heat treated by quenching and annealing, attention was drawn to the wide variations in the value of the Frémont test of specimens cut from different parts of the coupon. The latter was of the form and dimensions shown in Fig. 1, and Fremont test pieces were cut from two parts of this coupon, marked A and B in that figure. Nautilus Minerals (Nautilus) is following the lead of the petroleum industry as it strives to tap vast offshore resources. Planning is well underway for the Solwara 1 Project in the Bismarck Sea, Papua New Guinea (PNG) to recover high-grade seafloor massive sulphide deposits in 1600 m water depth. The deposit contains an average copper grade >10 times higher than a typical land-based porphyry copper mine. The high grades combined with a relatively small amount of overburden ensure the Solwara 1 Project will have a significantly smaller physical footprint than its land-based counterparts. Offshore minerals production also has the advantage of minimal social disturbance. Nautilus is dedicated to setting a high environmental and social responsibility standard. Nautilus recognises the importance of transparent and inclusive stakeholder engagement and has taken a proactive approach to involve as many key stakeholders as possible. One of the first steps in the permitting process in PNG is the preparation of the Environmental Inception Report, which describes the project, its envisaged impacts and the proposed studies for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Local (PNG-based) and international environmental scientists, anthropologists, NGOs and other experts were involved in the definition of studies conducted for the Solwara 1 EIA and a team of world-leading experts was involved with carrying out the studies, culminating in the preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). To ensure transparency, collaborating researchers are free to publish their findings. Following its submission, the EIS was made available for public review and public hearings were held at several locations. The EIS has also undergone a rigorous independent review by PNG government-engaged consultants. Outside the permitting process, Nautilus works alongside government officials to carry out ongoing community consultations. Information dissemination and feedback acquisition has also occurred through the Nautilus website and attendance at a number of international conferences, workshops, and meetings. This paper will outline the leading edge approach Nautilus has taken in completing the environmental impact statement for the world?s first deep seafloor copper-gold mine. In addition, this paper will review the permitting process and the government and stakeholder engagement undertaken as part of Nautilus? desire to ?do it right? in this exciting new industry.

The experiments described in this paper constitute the preliminary work of an investigation outlined to determine the combined effects of steam and temperature on the endurance properties of certain steels. Essentially of a fundamental nature, it was found necessary, in order to make the investigation comprehensive, to test materials treated to give a wide range of properties. The work reported deals chiefly with nickel steel with one series of tests including nitriding steel. Such a study involves numerous variables, and requires an endurance-testing machine of rather special design. Testing Machines The testing machines used were designed by C. E. Weaver;l they are a modification of the White-Souther and McAdam types. Each was driven directly by an individual 1/2-hp. 115-volt direct-current motor, running at a speed of 2200 r.p.m. Fig. 1 shows the assembly drawing and Fig. 2, a photograph of one of the machines. Specimen B is held by the rotating specimen holder A inside the steam box F, which is closed at the top by a tight-fitting, elliptical cover G. The load is applied to the specimen through the rod D and bearing C. E is an oil pipe leading fromthe lubrication system to the bearing C. The steam, which comes from the power house, is admitted through an inlet (not shown in Fig. 1) at the side of the box, the drain being at the bottom. Steam packings were placed around the rod D and the rotating shaft at H, from which the water was drained by means of a vacuum, which usually showed a gage reading of about 10 in. The temperature was measured by a mercury thermometer, and the pressure by a steam gage. Method of Applying Load After the motor has been started and the specimen as a consequence put in rotation, the load is applied by placing the foot pedal A (Fig. 2) in contact with electromagnet B, the winding of which is connected electrically in series with the motor. Experimenta1 investigations of fuel-bed temperature1-4 have not been lacking, but the absence of any theoretical background has made it impossible to use the results of these tests as a basis for prediction, except in a very general may. A mathematical analysis", based on a somewhat simplified theory of the distribution of lieat in a fuel bed, lias recently been completed by the author. Even though numerical values of some of the coefficients are not known, the calculations result in some conclusions of general significance. Thus, for example, it appears that when the temperatures throughout the fuel bed can be calculated, the rate at which ignition of the fuel by underfeed action can be maintained can also be calcu1ated. The uncertainty concerning the values of the coefficients referred to above is serious limitation on the use of that method. The following paper presents a discussion of these coefficients and includes estimates of their values based on the data now available. A brief description of the theory on which the analysis is based, and some results of the calculations showing their degree of agreement with experimental results, are presented by way of introduction to the discussion of the coefficients. Theory and Comparison with Experiment The theoretical analysis is similar to that used in the calculation of the stationary temperatures in a conducting solid in the classical theory of heat concluction. Tg Soda Ash has operated a shortwall mining system in the Green River, WY trona district since August 1982. The system has proven to be highly productive. In an effort to reduce the amount of relatively expensive development mining and improve mine planning flexibility, a method to mine the return air tailgate during the shortwall retreat was tested beginning in April 1987. As of June 1988, four shortwall panels had been completed using the advancing tailgate, producing more than 739 kt (815,000 st). This paper discusses the effects of the advancing tailgate on shortwall production, development mining requirements, costs, strata mechanics, and ventilation. Shortwall mining is a hybrid extraction method combining the self-advancing hydraulic roof supports from longwall mining and continuous mining machines (Fig. 1). The technique has been only marginally successful at the majority of the nearly 20 installations worldwide. At present, the face at Tg Soda Ash Inc. is the only shortwall operating in the United States and the only noncoal shortwall in existence. Despite the method's record of limited success, the staff at Tg Soda Ash determined that the conditions in its trona mine were well suited for shortwall mining. The commitment to install a shortwall was made in late 1981 and the first panel commenced in August 1982. Between that time and June 1988, about 3.33 Mt (3.67 million st) of trona have been mined with the system from 15 panels. Annual average productivities have ranged from 818 t/shift (902 st per shift) in 1982 to 1.4 kt/t shift (1591 st per shift) in 1987. Overall, the system has produced an average of 1.3 kt/ shift (1450 st per shift). In April 1987, a method of mining the return air tailgate during shortwall retreat was tested (Fig. 2). The objective was to determine if a return airway could be established and maintained by mining a series of rooms and pillars about 7.6 m (25 ft) past the face support line. The method would allow a barrier pillar to be left between shortwall panels without requiring the mining of a separate return air tailgate.
