Ventilation characteristics and the occurrence of nocturnal surface inversions have been investigated within the Mount Whaleback open cut iron ore mine at Newman in Western Australia. When winds are light and/or nocturnal surface inversions form within the pit, episodes of atmospheric stagnation can occur with resultant accumulation of dust, diesel exhaust fumes, and sulphur dioxide evolved from spontaneous combustion of pyritic shale. Nocturnal surface inversions were recorded outside the mine on more than two-thirds of nights. Inside the pit, inversions were much less frequent - occurring on roughly 20% of nights when they were observed outside - and much weaker - the maximum temperature difference being 5 C¦ over 210 m inside the pit compared with 15 C¦ over 150 m outside.

The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterowic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Fonnations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Thmsvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase defonnation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE+Au concentrations.

The work of Klier and Lyman1 on the bainite reaction has led to the full description of this reaction for medium-carbon low-alloy steels. Certain experimental data reported by Klier and Lyman appear, however, to be improbable of obtaining in very high-carbon steels. The study herein reported consists of an analysis of the transformation characteristics of a 3 per cent chromium, I per cent carbon steel by means of X-ray and metallographic methods. From the results obtained it is concluded that the bainite reaction in this steel is more complicated than that reported by Klier and Lyman for the low-carbon low-alloy steels. Henever, the mechanism of bainite formation in this steel appears to be essentially the same as proposed for the low-carbon low-alloy steels with the modification that the first volumes to transform are carbon-rich rather than carbon-poor. Experimental Procedure The analysis of the steel studied was: Cr, 2.89; C, 1.02; Mn, 0.33; Si, o.35; S, 0.012; P, 0.020. The stock was received from the Carpenter Steel Co. in rolled bars. Specimen Preparation Specimens were austenitized at 1200°C. (2192°F.) for 25 min. in purified nitrogen. The resultant A.S.T.M. austenite grain size was 0-1. Isothermal transformation was allowed by quenching the specimens into liquid metal baths controlled to 5°C. at 540°C. (1004°F.) and above, and to 2°C. at 490°C. (914°f.) and below. Following the desired degree of transformation all specimens were water quenched. Metallographic Examination Specimens 1/4 in. round by 1/4 in. were used for nietallographic examination. Etch-ants used were Vilella's reagent (I gram picric acid, 10 ml. hydrochloric acid to make 100 ml. ethyl alcohol solution) and alkalinc sodium picratc (electrolytic). Vilella's reagent was effective in revealing all microconstitucnts, while the alkaline sodium picrate developed the carbon-rich structures or carbides only. X-ray Examination Two X-ray techniques were used—the Debye-Scherrer method and a back-reflection method. 'The small specimens necessary for the Debye-Scherrer method were austenitized and then allowed to transform, or were cut from the larger metallographic specimens. The metallographic specimens were used for the back-reflection X-ray analysis. When it was desirable to determine the structure of the carbide present, sliver specimens were electrolytically etched to develop a carbide coating, then were exposed in the cameras. This technique was frequently necessary to allow positive identification of the carbide.

The effects of radon in drillholes on gamma-ray logs have been described by L. S. Hilpert and C. M. Bunker1 Since these effects may cause drastic error in the evaluation of uranium deposits, it is useful to know the conditions under which significant amounts of radon tend to accumulate in drillholes. In the studies described here, atmospheric conditions were found to dominate in the control of the behavior of radon in drillholes in the vicinity of a uranium orebody. The site of the investigation was in McKinley County, New Mexico, about 12 miles north of Grants. Drillholes of 4 1/4-in. diam, on 25-ft and 100-ft centers, penetrate ore in dry rock at a depth of about 100 ft. A geologic log of the drillhole of primary interest is shown in Fig. 1. Gamma-ray logs revealed three zones of ore-grade mineralization in the Todilto limestone. A 6-ft zone, the lowest of the three, assayed 0.20 pct U3O8 by chemical analysis. The limestone ores in this area contain disseminated uraninite and some yellow and orange secondary minerals. Only radon"", a member of the uranium'" series, was measured in this investigation. Radon is one of the chemically inert noble gases and is radioactive by alpha particle emission with a half life of about four days. In this discussion, amounts of radon are expressed in microcuries (1 microcurie equals 37,-000 disintegrations per sec) and concentrations of radon are expressed in microcuries per liter of drillhole air. Samples of air were obtained by lowering a sampling device (Fig. 2) into a drillhole and actuating the device at the desired depth. It was then raised to the surface and the sample was transferred to a storage tube. Within two days the sample was transferred to an ionization chamber, and the activ- ity of radon and its short-lived daughter products was measured at radioactive equilibrium with a vibrating-reed electrometer. The measurements were corrected back to the time of collection and involve errors estimated generally not to exceed + 5 pct to —15 pct. Radon Behavior in a Covered Hole: Fig. 3, a typical log of radon concentration vs depth in the covered drillhole, was made by using values of radon concentration at discrete depths. Continuous logs of alpha-particle radiation in the drillholes showed that such radon logs depict the continuous variation of radon concentration with depth quite accurately. The transformation of Seattle's historic KeyArena into the state-of-the-art Climate Pledge Arena, home to the NHL's Seattle Kraken, was no small feat. The $930-million renovation and expansion required the near-total demolition of the old structure and construction of an 800,000 sqf (74,000 m2), below grade venue while keeping its landmarked façade and roof intact. To do that, the project team had to come up with solutions for excavating 680,000 cu yd (520,000 m3) of soil to make way for the new 17,000-seat arena while working around the massive temporary shoring supporting the 44 million lb (20 million kg) roof all in time for the NHL's 2021-22 season.

Ph.D. (Toronto) (Visitor) A study was made of the kinetics in the leaching of nickel from pentlandite in dilute-acidic ferric sulphate solutions as a basis for subsequent studies on bacterial leaching. The chemical leaching rate was found to be highly dependent on the temperature and the concentration of ferric ions. The proposed mechanism for the leaching process is one involving rate control by chemical processes and mass transport. Good agreement was found between the experimental data and the proposed mechanism.

Slimes disposal at South African gold mines by M. MROST*. M.Sc. (Rand) (Fellow) The soil mechanics, civil engineering, and environmental considerations applicable to the construction of slimes dams on the Witwatersrand gold mines are discussed. It is concluded that, though the procedures used in the construction of dam embankments do not accord with the best possible practice, they are entirely adequate in current local circumstances, provided that proper precautions are taken to ensure that the wall foundations are sufficiently permeable and strong, and that the dams are protected against erosion. If current trends towards larger mining and metallurgical complexes continue, it may become necessary to build larger, higher dams, and to adopt slimes embankmentbuilding practices that are inherently more reliable.

A standard technique for heat treating small metallurgical samples where no appreciable contamination from the atmosphere can be tolerated is that of sealing small samples in evacuated fused-silica tubes. Since vitreous silica is relatively impervious to diffusion of gases, even at temperatures approaching the devitrification range, around 1100°C, this simple procedure has been very widely adopted as a standard technique in metallurgical research. Many workers have recognized that, with metals of fairly high reactivity, insulation from direct contact with the SiOz envelope is desirable in order to avoid displacement reactions of the type M + SOz-- MOz + Si(in M). A laboratory investigation was carried out to obtain data on the explosive character- istics of selected coals mined in New South Wales. Seven coal seams were sampled and the volatile matter content of the coals tested varied between 28 and 37 percent. A mod- ified Hartmann apparatus with a volume of 1250 ml was used in the investigation. Dust clou' generation was produced by an air blast delivered radially through a mushroom type valve and the ignition source was a-continuous A.C. spark produced by a 20 000 V, 50 mA transformer. The coal dust parameters invest- igated were the maximum pressure developed, the average and maximum rates of pressure rise at dust concentrations between 200 and 1500 3 g/m.

ACCORDING to the "reaction-path" modell,2 of martensite nucleation, the shear angle of the embryonic martensite plate must be treated as a variable, and included in any calculation of nucleus critical size. Also, as can be deduced from this model, the interfacial free energy between austenite and martensite does not reach its final value until the shear is completed. It is zero for zero shear angle. However, in order to account for the kinetics of the martensite transformation, some sort of interfacial energy barrier appears to be necessary even with the reaction-path model, for otherwise the volume and the energy of formation of the critical size nucleus both collapse to zero.3 Cohen independently suggested that surface energy could be incorporated into the reaction-path model, with the overall free energy of a martensite embryo being a function of its volume and shear angle.' It is possible to estimate the energy associated with the formation of a critical-size martensite nucleus starting with the reaction-path model and including a surface free-energy barrier. As the dependence of interfacial free energy upon shear angle is unknown, a simple type of dependence will be assumed, with the belief that the true dependence would not lead to appreciably different results. Consider the work required to form a lenticular martensite plate with radius r, thickness t, and shear angle 8. There are three contributions; one being the interfacial free energy, one being the free energy change in the martensite plate, and one being the free energy increase in the surrounding austenite. The interfacial free energy u is assumed to depend upon the shear angle 0 according to the relationship s=s0(?/?0)n [1] where 8, is the equilibrium shear angle and n is an exponent that may lie in the range 0 n 2. The work required to form the interfaces of a martensite plate then is W. = 2pr² s0(?/?0)n [2] The free energy change per unit volume of martensite is composed of two parts, one the ordinary volume free energy ?f1. which is negative, and the other the elastic strain energy G?m²/2, where G is the shear modulus and 7, the shear strain relative to the martensite structure. This expression for the strain energy is valid only when the shear strain ym, is sufficiently small that the martensite is within its linear elastic range. There is no doubt that ym, lies beyond the linear elastic range for embryos that are considerably subcritical. However, for critical nuclei it will be shown that ym, is 1.5 pct or less, within the linear elastic range of martensite. For embryos of nearly critical size, then, the strain energy of the martensite is correctly given by G?m²/2. The shear strain in the martensite is ym, = 8, — 8, and the work required to form the strained martensite is Wm --= (pr²t/2) [?fv + G(?O - ?)²/2] [3] The free energy change in the austenite is entirely that due to elastic distortion. The elastic strain is not uniformly distributed in the austenite, being large near the martensite plate and small elsewhere. Approximately, however, the energy corresponds to a uniform shear strain ya= (?t/2)/r [4] throughout the volume 4pr³/3 surrounding the plate. The work required to strain the surrounding austenite then is Wa = (4pr³/3) (G?a²/2) = (G?²/6) prt² [51 For simplicity, the same shear modulus G is assumed for each structure. Having W as a function of r, t, and 8, as in Eq. 6, there is a saddle-point where W has a stationary value, W subsequently decreasing indefinitely as the nucleus volume increases along the reaction path. The stationary value of W is the energy of the critical nucleus. The critical nucleus has radius, thickness, and shear angle such that ?W/?r - awlat: = ?W/?p? = 0. J. Richter and D. Schulze (Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschafte zu Berlin)—Introduction. In a recent paper R. G. Garlick and H. B. Probst reported on experimental results of investigations of room-temperature slip in zone-melted tungsten single crystals.17 In the paper it was pointed out that slip lines could be detected with an optical microscope only after about 10 pet plastic strain of the crystal. In our investigations we could observe slip lines in tungsten single crystals of defined orientations already with an elongation of 0.02 to 0.03 pet.18"9 Experimental Technique and Results. The tungsten single crystals were produced from 4 to 5 mm sintered rods* as starting material by electron- beam zone melting. With single-zone-pass melting a speed of 0.5 mm per min was used, while three-pass melting could be handled at a speed of 3 mm per min. Crystal axis orientations were located in the shaded area of the stereographic triangle, see Fig. 6. Orientation 1 is located at about 18 deg and orientation 2 at about 5 deg on the great circle from [011] to [ill]. This corresponds approximately to the orientations P and M referred to by Garlick and Probst. Our single crystals had a length of about 70 mm and were profiled solely by electrolytic means, leaving grip ends at both ends of the crystals. Between the latter, a cylindrical crystal of 45 to 50 mm length and about 2.4 mm diam was obtained. The crystals were deformed at room temperature in a commercial tensile-testing machine to obtain a strain of 0.02 to 5 pet. The average strain rate e = eP/t for all tensile tests amounted to approximately 10 -6 to 10-5 per sec, with ep representing plastic strain and t the duration of applied stress. In Fig. 7 a crystal is shown elongated by 0.03 pet. The picture was obtained by means of an optical microscope. Figs. 8 and 9 give electron-microscopic pictures of slip lines of crystals elongated by 0.07 and 1.1 pet, respectively. For crystals with the orientation 1, see Fig. 6, only the two main slip systems (101)[111] and (110)[111] were found. With the crystals of group 2 the two main slip systems are again evident, with

Measurements and analyses were conducted of whole-body vibration aboard seven commercially available passenger and/or recreational vehicles: sedan; sport-utility vehicle (SUV); pickup truck; moving truck; motorcycle; all-terrain vehicle (ATV); and boat. The purpose of the testing was to measure and assess whole-body vibration exposure in a range of typical vehicle environments in order to gain understanding of typical exposure levels characteristic of activities of daily living. Vehicle models tested (and model year) were: Ford Taurus (1995); Jeep Cherokee Sport (2000); Toyota Tundra SR5 (2002); Ford F-350 (1997); Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Classic (2004); Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4; and Steiger Craft Model 21 Montauk. All vehicles were tested with their standard factory-installed seats and were operated under a range of normal operating conditions and speeds typical of intended vehicle use. Methods The measurement, processing, analysis, and exposure assessment methods follow the guidance of generally accepted, national and international consensus standards relevant to the evaluation of whole-body vibration, including ISO 2631-1 [1] and ANSI S3.18 [2]. Seats were instrumented with low-mass triaxial accelerometers mounted in seat pads. Accelerometers used in the test are specified to have flat frequency response over the frequency range of 0.5 to 80 Hz, and all accelerometers were recently calibrated traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Seat pads were installed following guidance in the relevant standards [1, 2], with sensitive axes of the accelerometers following the standard coordinate system with respect to the seated occupant. (The x-axis represents fore-aft motion; the y-axis represents side-to-side motion; and the z-axis represents vertical motion with respect to the occupant.) Vibration data processing and analysis, including filtering, sampling, frequency-weighting, averaging, summation, and determination of basic and additional metrics followed procedures in the relevant standards [1, 2]. Digitized time series data were acquired and stored using a PC-based data acquisition system. Whole-body vibration exposure analyses were conducted via post-processing. During data processing, recorded periods of seat acceleration that were identified and verified as resulting from occupant-induced motion rather than vehicle motion were excluded prior to exposure analysis. "Attempts to reduce the energy requirements of water recovery in the process industries have resulted in the development of techniques to freeze and purify aqueous solutions that take advantage of local climatic conditions. Natural freezing is a technique by which aqueous solution is exposed to freezing air temperatures, resulting in the production of a layer of ice on the surface. As the ice layer tends to exclude solute, a concentrated solution is formed. However, due to dendritic ice growth along the advancing growth front, small quantities of solution are trapped within the ice, decreasing the purity of the water recovered. The ice produced can then be allowed to thaw in order to recover the water using low grade plant heat. As the more concentrated parts of the ice melt first, a purer ice remains. In this study, 0.5 molal magnesium sulfate solution was frozen under simulated natural freezing conditions at temperatures between –1 and –6°C. The ice produced was thawed at either room temperature or 50°C. Up to 40% of the water was recovered with a separation efficiency of above 95% when thawing at room temperature.INTRODUCTION Advances in refrigeration technology have made low-temperature separation processes increasingly appealing to an energy-conscious society. The latent heat of freezing of water is about seven times smaller than the latent heat of evaporation providing freezing with a strong thermodynamic advantage over the traditional evaporation-based processes. The result is the development of a wide variety of processes that fall under the term Freeze Concentration (FC), which describes a variety of techniques in which an aqueous solution is concentrated by the creation and subsequent removal of ice (Williams et al., 2015).FC processes exploit the freezing behaviour of aqueous solutions as dictated by their respective water-salt phase diagram. When, for example, a solution of magnesium sulfate is cooled to a temperature below its freezing point but above its eutectic temperature of –4.1?C (Figure 1) then, if the concentration of MgSO4 is less than the eutectic concentration (about 1.7 m), ice will form until the solution concentration reaches its equilibrium concentration at the given temperature on its phase diagram. If the concentration is greater than the eutectic concentration, MgSO4 solid will precipitate until the concentration reaches equilibrium. It is for this reason that ice can be selectively produced in FC processes (Randall & Nathoo, 2015)."

"The fourth concentrate production plant includes the comminution systems and the medium-low intensity magnetic separators (LIMS). Based on different conditions, two types of materials are fed into the plant. Type A: 70% of mine ore and 30% of reject materials from magnetite plant and type B: 100% of mine ore. The goal of the present study was to increase the iron grade and the blain number with low sulfur content in final concentrate as the pellet feed. An appropriate pellet feed should have more than 67% of iron, less than 0.1% of sulfur and a Blain number of more than 1800 cm2/g. The Fe, S and Blain no. amounts for the present concentrate are 66.6%, 0.95%, and 500 cm2/g (feed type:A) and 67.8%, 2.3%, and 450 cm2/g (feed type: B), respectively. In this research, the plant improvement efficiency was evaluated by changing the feed particle size distribution and using the flotation system. Laboratory experiments were designed based on the three circuits:1) LIMS (Low Intensity Grinding Rolls) feed grinding-LIMS test-flotation test2) LIMS feed grinding-flotation test-LIMS test3) LIMS concentrate grinding-flotation testThe best results were obtained using the first circuit at the LIMS feed size (d80) of 132 ?m. The processing results using the circuit no. 1 (feed type: A), showed a LIMS concentrate with 69.8% of Fe and 0.36% of sulfur. In this case, the final concentrate (after flotation) with Fe grade of 70.3%, sulfur content of 0.07% and Blain no. of 1571 cm2/g were obtained. In case of the feed type of B, the LIMS concentrate with Fe grade of 68.7%, and sulfur grade of 1.6% was achieved. Also, the Fe and sulfur contents were 69.3%, and 0.4% respectively with a Blain number of 1112 cm2/g. According to the obtained results, it was suggested that a LIMS feed comminution along with a LIMS and flotation systems are necessary to achieve an appropriate iron and sulfur grades with an acceptable blain number. To reach a concentrate Blain number as a pelletizing feed, a High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) system at the end of the processing line was recommended."

"The mining operation at Namdeb’s Southern Coastal Mine (SCM) is unique. It targets gravel layers up to 30 m below sea level, which continue to dip deeper, further west, under the Atlantic Ocean. On this storm-dominated coastline, severe water seepage into mining areas, rugged orebody footwall characteristics, and highly variable resource grades all contribute to a challenging operational environment. Namdeb has a proud history of innovation, and as the mine progresses further westwards and associated technical and economic challenges increase, this innovative culture has become essential to the future of the mine. The Theory of Constraints (ToC) has been widely used at SCM, and across the mining discipline, to focus efforts on improving overall business profitability. Through analysis of the mining processes, opportunities were identified, solutions developed, and initiatives implemented with staggering results across all three mining disciplines, i.e. stripping, load and haul, and bedrock bulking and cleaning. This paper outlines the solutions adopted and the results of the ToC analysis. IntroductionSouthern Coastal Mine (SCM) is one of three Namdeb operations located in the southwestern corner of Namibia, between the Orange River in the south, the Namib Desert to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west (Figure 1). These three geographical features set the backdrop for the world’s greatest marine diamond mining placer (Badenhorst, 2003). SCM is situated along the coastline extending from the mouth of the Orange River to Chameis Bay approximately 120 km to the north. The active mining area, called Mining Area 1 (MA1) is, however, limited to very narrow strip, 30 km in length, in the south of the licence area, close to the town of Oranjemund.Namdeb, a wholly owned subsidiary of Namdeb Holdings, is a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers and the Government of Namibia. Diamonds were first discovered along the Namibian coastline in April 1908, close to the town of Luderitz, but mining operations started in the SCM mining area only in February 1929 (Schneider, 2009). Initially all Namdeb mining operations exploited massive land-based deposits, producing nearly 40 million carats from MA1 between 1920 and 1977 (Schneider, 2009) when mining targeted onshore raised beaches west of the high water line. Since 1977 however, SCM and Namdeb have developed a unique mining method to economically extract the resource which extends westward under the Atlantic Ocean."
